This year witnessed many highs and lows for this determined athlete. She received a huge shock when disqualified at Paris Olympics but she could turn it around by winning Haryana elections.

Bihar Chief Minister and JDU leader Nitish Kumar, with Chirag Paswan, ranked as the second and third most searched Indians, respectively. The two politicians saw a sharp rise in searches on Lok Sabha election counting day. Nitish Kumar’s party has won 12 seats in the general elections, whereas Chirag Paswan stepped into the limelight, successfully claiming all five seats contested by his party in Bihar.

The cricketer Hardik Pandya found himself on the list while garnering both attention with his on-field performance as well as with his life, including separating from his wife Natasa Stankovic. Pawan Kalyan, actor-turned-politician, was in the list also, due to his party’s quite impressive results in the polls of Andhra Pradesh.

Cricketers Shashank Singh and Abhishek Sharma were among the most searched for this year. Model and actor Poonam Pandey was in the news after a controversy over a stunt in February, which she later clarified as a stunt to raise awareness about cervical cancer. She apologized publicly for the stunt.

Radhika Merchant, who married Mukesh Ambani’s son in a grand ceremony in July, was another highly Googled individual. Badminton star Lakshya Sen, who delivered India’s best-ever performance by a male shuttler by finishing fourth at the Paris Olympics, rounded out the list of top 10 most-searched Indians in 2024.

</excerpt>

On Raksha Bandhan, Union Minister Chirag Paswan called on the youth to commit to ensuring the safety of women across India. Paswan emphasized the need for a cultural shift to prevent heinous crimes, drawing parallels to the 2012 Delhi gangrape and a recent incident in West Bengal where a postgraduate trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

Celebrating Raksha Bandhan with his sisters in Bihar, Paswan urged young people to resolve to protect women and work towards eradicating the regressive mindset that leads to such violent crimes. “On Raksha Bandhan, every youth should pledge to ensure the safety of every woman in the country. We need to change the mentality that allows incidents like the Nirbhaya case to occur,” Paswan said.

Regarding West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose’s remarks about the state’s declining democracy, Paswan expressed concern. He highlighted the need for decisive action and strict punishment for those responsible for such crimes, regardless of political leadership. “It is troubling if the Governor makes such statements about a state led by a woman Chief Minister. We must ensure proper action and punishment to prevent such incidents in the future,” he said.

Paswan also referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent statement at the Red Fort, stressing the collective responsibility required from lawmakers, law enforcement, and citizens to uphold safety and justice.

Additionally, Paswan criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her protest against the TMC government, viewing it as indicative of the ruling party’s weakness in the state.

</excerpt>

Around the decade of 80s, in academics, while understanding political parties in India, we used to ask the question about- ‘class base of political parties’. Now a days we are habitual to raise question- about ‘caste base of political parties’ in Indian society and politics. As we have observed that many political parties in India have their own caste base. The caste base of the political parties gets reflected in their political stands on various issue in different circumstances.

Recently, Supreme Court of India gave a very important verdict in which it permitted the state governments to make provisions for sub- classification in reservations for the most marginal communities within scheduled caste and scheduled tribe category. The Supreme Court also advised the state governments to do a judicious identification of such communities by rigorously collected data. As we know this verdict came in the case of Davinder Singh vs. State of Punjab which is decided by 6:1 bench of the judges of the apex court.

This verdict of the Hon’ble court created a sharp debate in Indian public-political sphere and also produced multiple polarisations among the political class of the country. Some of the political parties expressed their clear-cut stand either for or against of this issue and some others are still working on the strategy to wait and watch. The Political parties like Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and its supremo Mayawati, Lokshakti Janata Dal lead by central minister Chirag Paswan, HAM leader and ex-CM of Bihar Jeetan Ram Manjhi, Ram Das Athawale- leader of Republican Party of India (RPI-Athawale) took their clear stand on this recently articulated judgement.

Few Congresses chief ministers such as Revanth Reddy, chief minister of Telangana, K Siddaramaiah, Congress leader and Chief minister of Karnataka, appreciated enthusiastically this verdict of the Supreme Court. BSP leader Mayawati recently opposed this verdict aggressively and described that it may dilute the social justice benefit for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, provided by the Constitution.

She also posed the doubt that due to such acts Dalit communities may weaken and their empowerment process will be affected. Lok Jan shakti Party (LJP) leader Chirag Paswan also opposed this verdict. The critical stand expressed by both these leaders from the most visible and dominant Schedule Castes show that they are reflecting feelings of the caste base of their political parties. As we know that BSP’s caste base among Schedule Castes is centred around Jatav, Chamar castes in the various Northern Indian states who have evolved as main beneficiary of reservations for the scheduled castes in post Independent India.

Similarly, Paswan also known as Dusadh caste in Bihar– is the largest castes among the list of Schedule castes of Bihar. It is visible Dalit communities in the state and acquired various kinds of representations in politics, jobs and development. It is working as base vote community of Lok Jan shakti Party, led by Chirag Paswan, in electoral politics. This verdict may create possibility for the share in reservation generated opportunities in other marginal castes in Bihar, whose major benefits use to go to the Paswan Community.
The Chirag Paswan’s stand on it is largely reshaped by the pressure of their electoral caste base in the politics of Bihar. Jeetan Ram Manjhi and his party -Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) who represent the developmental and political desire of the Musher caste which is one of the poor and most marginal Schedule Castes in Bihar. As Manjhi supported this verdict of sub-classification of the SC-ST reservation for most backward and marginal castes.

It is obvious that while supporting it, he is supporting the interest of his political caste base. In this process he is also addressing his electoral base in the politics of democracy.
Second factor which has reshaped the stand of few political parties is electoral concern. In fact, in most of the state this assertion for sub-classification in SC-ST reservation is led by second largest or second politically influential caste in various state. In Punjab, it is led by Valmiki caste, in Telangana, it is led by Madiga caste and Maharashtra it is being demanded by various non-Mahar Dalit castes. So, to understand, political and electoral relevance of these communities, various national and regional political parties came forward to support this verdict.

However, supporting the cause of most marginal communities is ethical concern for our political class but what we observed – the political stand of many political parties has been reshaped by their mere political and electoral concern. The political is always pragmatic, mostly it keeps ethical and moral concern as secondary preference while articulating its political stand. But ‘literati class ‘of the any nation must take ethical and moral stand especially while articulating the politics of distribution of democratic resources for the most backward and most marginal communities.

Paswan highlighted that while Ranaut may not always be politically correct, this trait is a significant part of her unique selling point (USP).

Kangana’s Unfiltered Communication

When shown a photograph of Kangana, Paswan described her as a “good friend” and commented on her potential as a Member of Parliament. “One thing I know for sure is that most of the times she isn’t politically correct but that’s her USP again. She talks her…” he noted, emphasizing that Ranaut knows what to say and when, although whether it is politically correct is debatable.

Paswan elaborated, “She knows kya bolna hai kab bolna hai. Ab woh politically correct ho, nahi ho woh debatable ho sakta hai (She knows what to speak and when to speak. But whether it is politically correct or not could be debatable).” He added that her candidness is something many people appreciate.

A Candid Moment Outside Parliament

Paswan also recalled a memorable encounter with Kangana outside the Parliament in June, where the two shared a candid moment that quickly went viral on social media. Reflecting on their meeting, Paswan mentioned, “I was really looking forward to meeting her in Parliament.” He added that their connection had waned due to his busy schedule, but their reunion was something he had anticipated.

Advice for Kangana

When asked if he had any advice for Kangana regarding her speeches, Paswan laughed and remarked that she doesn’t need any tips. Kangana recently won from the Mandi constituency of Himachal Pradesh, marking her first term as a BJP parliamentarian. In the Lok Sabha elections she defeated Congress’ Vikramaditya Singh in the Lok Sabha elections.

Kangana and Chirag Paswan starred together in the film Mile Na Mile Hum in 2011, which was directed by Tanveer Khan This film marked Paswan’s debut in the film industry. After his stint in acting, Paswan transitioned into politics.

Fans eagerly await Kangana’s upcoming film, Emergency, set to release on September 6.
The Union Minister of Food Processing Industries made this light-hearted admission in an ANI podcast. “I am a nepo kid, I can’t shy away from that fact. I am proud that I am the son of Ram Vilas Paswan Ji. For me its a matter of pride,” said Paswan.

He also described the advantage as having both pros and cons. “If you do good work, people say that it is because of your parents. So the credit is not yours. but if you do bad, then you will hear abuses. So you are always on a double-edged sword.” said the LJP leader.

Paswan added that his rise to party chief wasn’t automatic; he had to demonstrate his capabilities. He referenced the division within the LJP led by his uncle Pashupati Kumar Paras, who joined the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in 2020 following his father’s passing and his tenure as LJP President.

The former Bollywood actor also expressed that he believes the nepotism label no longer applies to him, as he experienced significant setbacks and had to rebuild his career from the ground up. “I lost everything – the party, the symbol, the organisation and the house we stayed in for three decades. So everything was taken away from me, I had to start from scratch, I did not even know how to make a new party,” Paswan added.

Hajipur MP Chirag Paswan acknowledged his mother, Reena Sharma, as his main source of support during his political comeback. He also criticized unnamed national news channels for prematurely writing off his political career.

Following the split from LJP, Chirag Paswan contested the 2020 Bihar assembly elections independently, focusing solely on challenging JD(U) candidates while remaining part of the NDA. He spearheaded his party’s resurgence through the “Ashirwad Yatra” in Bihar ahead of the 2024 general elections.

A vocal advocate of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chirag Paswan’s party achieved a perfect strike rate within the NDA by winning all five seats in Bihar during the Lok Sabha polls.

Chirag has now commented on the photo, describing it as capturing a genuine emotion.

The Union minister and president of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) discussed the matter in an ANI podcast.

Chirag’s reaction

During the interview, he spoke about his friendship with the actor. Responding to a question from Smita Prakash in the podcast, Chirag said, “I was really looking forward to meeting her in Parliament. Because past 2-3 years I was so busy in my life toh connect toot gaya tha.”

The host then asked if he had given her any advice on speaking. To which Chirag replied, “Hahaha, no no. She doesn’t need any tip”. Chirag and Kangana appeared together in the 2014 film ‘Miley Na Miley Hum’.

Kangana and Chirag Meet Outside Parliament

In June, a new video of the pair surfaced on social media, with news agency ANI capturing a candid moment of them outside the Parliament. They greeted each other and exchanged a low five.

In the video, Kangana, dressed in a yellow cotton sari, was seen ascending the stairs with Chirag beside her. She greeted Chirag, who was wearing a white kurta and blue jeans, with a smile, and they giggled for a few seconds. They exchanged a low five before entering the premises together. Kangana is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, while Chirag is the chief of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas).

In June, Kangana and Chirag also met at the NDA’s Parliamentary meeting in New Delhi, where they shook hands and shared some laughs. Earlier, Chirag mentioned he was eager to meet Kangana again. “I am looking forward to meet her. We shared a good relationship, worked in a film. We will be meeting in Parliament. I think she is a strong lady; she voices herself very articulately and I am looking forward listening to her in Parliament,” he told PTI.

</excerpt>

Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan was elected as the LJP (Ram Vilas) Parliamentary Party leader after a meeting held at his residence here in Delhi on Friday.

All five MPs of the party namely Veena Devi, Arun Bharti, Shambhavi Choudhary and Rajesh Verma along with LJP President Chirag Paswan were present in the meeting.
After the meeting, Paswan said while speaking to ANI said, “This is just a formality to choose the PM as the leader (of NDA Parliamentary Party). We contested the election under his leadership. Under his leadership, we have the capability that NDA is forming the government for the third consecutive time with a thumping majority. All NDA MPs will gather together and this formality will be completed. NDA is going to form the government soon and PM is going to take the oath for the third time. The Government will be as strong as it functioned in the last 10 years.”

Chirag Paswan rejected speculations regarding demands from his party, asserting LJP’s unwavering dedication to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He emphasized that during the recent NDA meeting, LJP pledged unconditional support to PM Modi’s leadership without any conditions, hence confirming no demands from their end. Paswan anticipated that the NDA would likely present a letter of support to PM Modi’s leadership to the President on the day in question.

Regarding JD(U)’s stance on the Agnipath scheme, Paswan highlighted the Prime Minister’s openness to discussions within the alliance. He acknowledged the alliance’s consensus on reviewing schemes if necessary, pending official information on the scheme’s impact. Paswan emphasized the immediate priority of government formation.

LJP MP Rajesh Verma echoed Paswan’s sentiments, stating that there are no specific expectations from LJP. Verma reiterated LJP’s commitment to seeing Prime Minister Narendra Modi take office for a third term, affirming their unconditional support.

Regarding calls for Bihar to be granted “special status, LJP MP Veeena Devi said, “There are no specific demands from the government. We definitely wish for the betterment of Bihar, because we belong to the state”.

Veena Devi won from the Vaishali Lok Sabha constituency in Bihar.

Earlier, while speaking to media, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) President Chirag Paswan affirmed that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) stands “united” and will soon form the government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Chirag Paswan said, “People of Bihar have instilled their trust in our party and given us a mandate on all the 5 seats we contested. We promise to fulfil our responsibilities. PM Modi showed his faith in a party with a single MP and gave us 5 seats and we won all 5 of them.”

He reiterated the unity of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and expressed confidence in the imminent formation of the government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. Paswan also predicted that the BJP would secure victory in all 40 seats in Bihar in the 2029 elections.

In Bihar, the BJP-led NDA demonstrated a strong performance, securing 29 out of the 40 seats. The BJP and JDU each won 12 seats, while LJP (Ram Vilas) secured victory in all five seats it contested. The RJD and Congress won four and three seats, respectively.

According to the Election Commission of India, the BJP won 240 seats, a decrease from its 2019 tally of 303. In contrast, the Congress experienced significant growth, securing victory in 99 seats. The INDIA bloc surpassed the 230 mark, presenting a formidable challenge and surpassing earlier predictions.

</excerpt>

Chirag Paswan, the National President of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) and candidate from Hajipur expressed admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He lauded Modi for enhancing India’s global reputation, noting that India’s name is recognized in every corner of the world.

Paswan said “Saying “Bharat Mata ki Jai” is not just a slogan; today, PM Modi has made Bharat Mata truly triumphant on the world stage. There is no country in the world where India’s name does not resonate. The way he has worked to uplift and honor the glory of Bharat Mata, raising her head high, is remarkable.”

He added “This is not a violation of the MCC (Model Code of Conduct), but those who have never understood spirituality will never comprehend this. The opposition parties that have never respected Sanatan Dharma or held faith will never understand this. These things do not matter to them. PM Modi, after the election campaign ended in 2014 and 2019, meditated in the same way, and he is doing the same this time in 2024 as well.”

Chirag Paswan stated, “India was once known as the golden bird, but under PM Modi’s leadership, it has evolved into a golden lion that asserts its presence on the international platform.”

PM Modi’s actions speak louder than words, driving holistic progress and safeguarding rural women’s dignity and well-being. Initiatives like the Ayushman scheme ease financial burdens during illness, benefiting 81 crore individuals with free food grains, especially helping disadvantaged families.

In this scenario, the Prime Minister’s focus on bridging rural-urban gaps includes respecting all citizens’ beliefs. Recently, a magnificent Ram temple was built under his leadership, a historic milestone replacing a temporary structure where Lord Ram Lalla had resided for centuries.

</excerpt>

Reacting to Rahul Gandhi’s election pledge to abolish the Agniveer scheme if the Congress-led INDIA bloc assumes power at the Centre, Chirag Paswan, the chief of Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), criticized those who prioritize indulging in lavish feasts over understanding the significance of initiatives like the military recruitment program. Paswan emphasized that such individuals, who he described as only caring about “mutton parties,” lack comprehension of schemes like Agniveer, which aim to empower the country’s youth. Speaking to ANI, Paswan asserted, “After June 4, all these people will be throwing mutton parties for one another,” in response to Rahul Gandhi’s remarks regarding scrapping the Agniveer scheme.

Tejashwi Yadav, a leader of the Rashtriya Janata Dal and a member of the Congress-led INDIA bloc, recently shared a video of lunch with Rahul Gandhi, where the latter was seen enjoying mutton. Commenting on the Congress’s stance on the Agniveer scheme, Paswan criticized the party for what he perceives as self-defeating statements that benefit the NDA. He also accused the Congress of insulting the Indian Army, attributing the party’s decline to this behavior.

Dismissing Tejashwi Yadav’s predictions for the Lok Sabha polls, Paswan asserted that the NDA is poised for a significant victory in 2024, surpassing its performance in 2019. He confidently stated that the NDA would secure all 40 seats in Bihar and achieve a nationwide majority, forming the government with a decisive mandate.

Responding to Rahul Gandhi’s assertion that PM Modi was sent by his “parmatma (his God)” to aid industrialists such as Gautam Adani and Mukesh Ambani, Paswan argued that the Congress lacks the ability to comprehend the Prime Minister’s intentions. He suggested that those who seek to undermine traditional strengths and engage in appeasement politics fail to grasp the purpose behind the Prime Minister’s actions.

Paswan reminded the Congress of alleged atrocities committed during their tenure in power, referencing incidents like the imposition of emergency in 1975. He accused the Congress of endangering democracy and asserted that their focus remains on destruction rather than understanding the Prime Minister’s objectives.

</excerpt>

LJP (Ram Vilas) chief and candidate for the Hajipur Lok Sabha seat, Chirag Paswan, criticized the Opposition INDIA bloc on Wednesday, claiming the alliance lacks both a leader and a coherent policy to win public support.

Speaking to ANI, Paswan argued that the INDIA alliance’s sole aim is to defeat Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which he believes is insufficient for the country’s development. “INDIA bloc has neither a leader nor any policy. Their priority is to defeat PM Modi, and it can’t be a vision for the development of the country,” he said. He added, “Just to defeat a person, you (parties in the INDIA alliance) have done everything possible and compromised your principles, policies, and everything to join together.”

Paswan questioned why anyone would support an alliance without a clear vision beyond defeating PM Modi. In response to Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi’s accusation that PM Modi misleads people by bringing religion into politics, Paswan countered that it is actually the leaders of the INDIA bloc who discuss religion-based reservations. “Everyone knows who misleads in the name of religion. Why do appeasement politics start during the elections?” he asked.

Priyanka Gandhi had recently alleged that the BJP, unable to showcase its work from the past decade, resorts to invoking Gods and Goddesses for votes. She stated at a rally in Kangra, “The BJP tries to topple the elected government with its money power. MLAs were being lured with Rs 100 crore offers each. The Prime Minister of the country has the responsibility of maintaining democracy and building morality. PM Modi asks for votes in the name of Gods and Goddesses.”

Under the INDIA alliance in Bihar, the RJD is contesting 26 seats, Congress nine, and the Left parties five out of the state’s 40 Lok Sabha constituencies. In the NDA, the BJP will contest 17 seats, JD-U 16, LJP (Ram Vilas) five, and Hindustani Awam Morcha and Rashtriya Lok Morcha one each in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Bihar, with its 40 Lok Sabha constituencies, plays a significant role in Indian politics. In the 2019 elections, the NDA, including BJP, JD-U, and LJP, won 39 out of 40 seats, while the Mahagathbandhan, led by RJD, Congress, and RLSP, secured only one seat.

</excerpt>

Lok Janshakti Party leader Chirag Paswan affirmed on Wednesday his intention to contest from Hajipur, challenging his Uncle Pashupati Kumar Paras in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

“It is certain that I will be the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) candidate, the NDA candidate, from Hajipur – which was the ‘karmabhoomi’ of my father. He (Pashupati Kumar Paras) is welcome (to contest from there). I have bravely faced all challenges. I have never been scared of any challenges. I accept this challenge too,” Paswan stated during a media interaction on Wednesday.

Regarding the prospect of competing against his uncle in the Hajipur constituency, Paswan commented, “This isn’t merely a political choice for me; it also holds implications for my family. Such decisions should not only be made by political parties but should also consider the sentiments of all family members. Previously, the decision to separate from the family was his (Pashupathi Paras’) alone, and it continues to be his decision.”

In anticipation of the Lok Sabha elections, the Lok Janshakti Party convened a parliamentary meeting under the leadership of LJP Chief Chirag Paswan.

“After the meeting of the central Parliamentary Board (of the party), we will leave for Bihar. Several proposals need to be essentially passed, and several important decisions have to be made,” Paswan stated during an earlier media briefing.

Regarding the announcement of the party’s candidate list for the Lok Sabha election, Paswan mentioned that it will be disclosed soon.

“Nominations are being filed for the first phase of elections; the list of LJP candidates will be out very soon,” he remarked.

On Tuesday, Rashtriya Lok Janshakti Party (RLJP) President Pashupati Kumar Paras resigned as Union Minister, a day after his party was denied any seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Bihar.

Speaking to ANI, the RLJP President expressed, “Yesterday, the NDA alliance announced the list of 40 candidates for Bihar Lok Sabha…Our party had five MPs & I worked with utmost sincerity…Injustice has been done with us & our party. Therefore, I resign from the post of Union Minister.”

“I will contest (Lok Sabha election) from Hajipur. All of our sitting MPs will contest from their respective constituencies. This is our party’s decision,” Paras declared.

On Monday, the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) announced seat-sharing in Bihar for the Lok Sabha polls, with the BJP set to contest 17 seats and JD-(U) 16. Jitan Ram Manjhi-led Hindustani Aawam Morcha (HAM) and Rashtriya Lok Samta Party (RLSP) will contest one seat each. Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) will contest five seats.

</excerpt>

Union Minister Pashupati Paras made public his resignation on Tuesday morning and pulled his Rashtriya Lok Janshakti Party out of the BJP-led national coalition. This decision came just a day after the BJP finalized a seat-sharing agreement with Chirag Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party, which is the nephew of Mr. Paras.

The BJP-LJP pact, forming part of a broader arrangement for the upcoming Lok Sabha election in Bihar, resulted in Mr. Paras’ party being completely sidelined. The RLJP was not allotted any seats, whereas Mr. Paswan’s LJP secured five seats, including the Hajipur constituency, which was won by his uncle in the 2019 election.

Mr. Paras stated, “The NDA deal has been announced. I am grateful to the Prime Minister. My party and I faced injustice. So I am resigning as minister.”

When asked about a potential alliance with the opposition, either with the state-level Congress-Rashtriya Janata Dal alliance or the national-level INDIA bloc led by the Congress, Mr. Paras remained non-committal. However, he confirmed that his RLJP would contest the Hajipur seat.

Last week, amid reports of the BJP finalizing its Bihar alliances and his apparent exclusion, Mr. Paras mentioned that his RLJP and its five MPs, including himself, would contest the seats they won in the previous election. He added that the party is free to go anywhere, sparking speculation about a deal within the opposition.

Mr. Paras had won the Hajipur seat five years ago as a member of the then-undivided Lok Janshakti Party led by Ram Vilas Paswan, who was Chirag Paswan’s father.

The BJP’s decision to align with Chirag Paswan’s faction of the LJP signifies the belief that he now commands complete control over the community vote, with the Paswans constituting approximately six percent of Bihar’s voting population.

However, a potential issue for the BJP might be the strained relationship between Mr. Paswan and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United), the other major partner in the state alliance.

The Chief Minister holds the LJP responsible for his party’s poor performance in the 2020 Assembly election, following the split within the LJP after Ram Vilas Paswan’s demise. This split, allegedly backed by the BJP, led to a contest between Mr. Paras and Chirag Paswan for control of the LJP, resulting in the latter contesting the state election independently and dividing the votes, which ultimately benefited the BJP.

For the 2024 election, the BJP is set to contest more than half of Bihar’s 40 Lok Sabha seats, signaling its strengthened position in its relationship with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United). In contrast to 2019, where both parties contested an equal number of seats, the BJP now retains 17 seats and allocates 16 to the JDU.

Chirag Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) will fight on five of the 40 Lok Sabha seats in Bihar while the other two smaller parties have been given one each.

BJP National General Secretary Vinod Tawde on Monday gave the details of the seat sharing in Bihar while addressing a press conference at the party headquarters in New Delhi. The other two parties former CM Jitan Ram Manjhi’s Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) and former union minister Upendra Kushwaha’s Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) will contest on one seat each.

Pashupati Kumar Paras’s Rashtriya Lok Janshakti Party (RLJP) has not been allotted any Lok Sabha seat; instead the party has been offered one Rajya Sabha seat along with a ministerial berth in the government of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

The NDA had in Lok Sabha election 2019 won 39 of the 40 seats in Bihar. The maximum seats were wonm by BJP which scored 17, JDU had 16 while the then united Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) of Ram Vilas Paswan bagged six.

But the LJP split into two after Paswan’s death. After a protracted political and legal battle, Chirag Paswan was allotted the name Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) while his maternal uncle and Ram Vila Paswan’s younger brother Pashupati Kumar Paras got the remaining unit called as RLJP.

On the stage, Chirag Paswan highlights the issues faced by people in Bihar. He says, ‘In Bihar, you can find Brahmins, Kurmis, Bhumihars—all castes, but you won’t find a Bihari.’ During this, he launches an attack on the Bihar government, stating that it indulges in caste-based politics, marginalizes the backward, and plays with emotions, dividing the country based on religion and caste.

He mentions discussions regarding the Lok Sabha elections, indicating that talks on seat distribution are underway, likely to be finalized by Makar Sankranti. Emphasizing the significance of Hajipur seat, Chirag Paswan expresses its personal importance, stating, ‘This seat holds significance as my father contested elections from here. As a son, I want to fulfill his unfinished dreams.’ He notes that even after 75 years of independence, Bihar lags behind other states in development. Despite prolonged periods in power, parties like Congress, RJD, and JDU have not prioritized Bihar’s progress.

Chirag Paswan comments on Nitish Kumar’s legislative statement, suggesting that his actions indicate mental health concerns, and recommends seeking treatment. Accusing CM Nitish, he claims that any alliance with Nitish Kumar will lead to defeat. He also questions the caste-based census in Bihar, stating that it brings no benefit to the common people and does not provide employment for the youth. Paswan asserts the rich history of Bihar and expresses concern that the birthplace of democracy is now under threat in the state.

PATNA: Bihar’s ruling Janata Dal-United on Sunday slammed former coalition partner Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) as a spoiler in the recent Assembly polls, terming its president Chirag Paswan a “Hanuman who set Ayodhya on fire”.

JD-U’s national spokesperson and former Rajya Sabha MP K.C. Tyagi’s comments came on at the last day of the party’s Executive Committee meeting here, where one of the core issues was the party’s under-performance in the Assembly elections, among other issues.

Ahead of the Bihar Assembly polls, Chirag Paswan-led LJP had parted ways with the NDA at the state level and given a majority of tickets to those candidates who were denied by the JD-U, while fighting in only those seats where JD-U was contesting, to play the role of a “vote cutter”.

“Chirag himself announced that he is the Hanuman of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I know one Hanuman who had set Lanka on fire and I must say that Chirag is of that sort (of Hanuman) who has set Ayodhya (his own alliance) on fire,” Tyagi said.

“Chirag is the son of socialist leader Ram Vilas Paswan who had made speeches only after paying respect to leaders like Ram Manohar Lohia, Bhim Rao Ambedkar and others of the same league. It is extremely unfortunate that his son has not taken the name of these social justice leaders and also of his father during the Assembly election in Bihar. Despite the LJP walking out of the NDA, he was seeking votes in the name of Narendra Modi,” Tyagi alleged.

“After the election result, Nitish Kumar announced to step down from the CM’s post. Our other leaders then convinced him that he is not a CM on the basis of numbers of MLAs but he is a CM because of his high credibility in Bihar,” he said.

“In 2005, 2010 and 2015, Nitish Kumar had the upper hand in Bihar. Without his efforts, BJP would not stand here. Even in 2020, Nitish Kumar was the CM’s face of NDA. During the meeting, party leaders emphasised on detecting those leaders or members responsible for anti-party activities in the polls,” Tyagi added. WITH IANS INPUTS
