The viral invitation sparked outrage before authorities stepped in and cancelled the ceremony.

Photo With Two Brides Sparks Controversy

The controversy began when an unusual wedding invitation surfaced on Chinese social media. It featured a man in a black suit standing between two women in white bridal gowns. The image, reportedly from Bijie in Guizhou province, rapidly circulated online and ignited intense debate over its legality and social appropriateness.

High-End Venue, Public Backlash

According to The Paper, quoted by the South China Morning Post, the wedding was scheduled for April 19 at the upscale Century Jiayuan Banquet Centre in Bijie. The invitation included the groom’s name alongside those of both women, leading to confusion and widespread criticism.

Police Confirm It Was a Prank

Authorities stepped in after the image went viral. Police later confirmed that the ceremony was a prank and clarified that one of the two women in the photo was the man’s ex-wife. “Persuasion and education” were given to those involved, and the event was formally cancelled. The man has since stated he plans to legally register his marriage with his current girlfriend soon.

The venue responded by canceling the booking. In a statement issued on April 17, the banquet management said: “When we received the reservation, we were unaware it involved a three-person wedding. Due to the extensive public attention it garnered, we realised it was quite unconventional. Our management decided to cancel the booking, as it does not comply with the law.”

Legal and Social Backdrop

While no formal charges have been filed against the trio, it’s unclear whether further legal action will be taken.

Not a First in China

This isn’t the first time a wedding stunt has made waves in China. In 2022, a man in Jiangsu province shared staged photos of himself with his wife and her friend, claiming he intended to marry both. He was later punished for disturbing public order, though details of the penalty were not disclosed. He admitted it was all a ploy for online attention.

</excerpt>

In a creative effort to address both workplace happiness and broader societal challenges, Chinese tech company Insta360 has rolled out a campaign offering cash incentives to employees for going on dates. Based in Shenzhen, the company launched the initiative as a way to foster connections and create a sense of belonging among its workforce. The campaign, first reported by the South China Morning Post (SCMP), has generated significant interest and mixed reactions.

How the Programme Works

Insta360’s dating initiative provides employees with 66 yuan (around ₹770) for each valid post on its internal dating platform, where they introduce a single person outside the company. If an employee helps two singles form a relationship that lasts for at least three months, they are eligible for a more substantial reward. Both the matchmaker and the successful couple each stand to receive 1,000 yuan (approximately ₹11,650).

Since its launch, the programme has seen nearly 500 posts on the company’s internal forum, with rewards totaling approximately 10,000 yuan distributed for smaller, introductory cash bonuses. However, no large dating bonuses have been awarded yet as the campaign is still in its early stages.

Mixed Reactions from Employees and the Public

The response to Insta360’s initiative has been a mix of enthusiasm and skepticism. Some employees have embraced the unique approach, while others have questioned the focus on monetary incentives in relationships. One employee humorously commented, “My company is more eager than my mum,” referring to the company’s matchmaking enthusiasm. Another jokingly asked, “Does the company have any recruitment plans?”

On social media, reactions have been varied, with some users suggesting that the Chinese government should adopt similar incentives to boost societal connections. However, not all responses were positive. One critic expressed concern, stating, “Love should not be measured by money,” suggesting that the focus on financial rewards could detract from the genuine nature of relationships.

Addressing China’s Declining Marriage and Birth Rates

The timing of Insta360’s initiative is notable, as it coincides with China’s ongoing struggles with declining marriage and birth rates. According to government data, only 4.74 million couples registered their marriages in the first three quarters of 2024, marking a 16.6% decrease from the previous year. This reflects broader societal trends, with China’s birth rate falling to a historic low of 6.39 births per 1,000 people in 2023, compared to 6.77 in 2022.

Insta360’s campaign appears to be an attempt to address these societal issues by encouraging social interactions among employees while contributing to a larger conversation about the country’s demographic challenges.

A Bold Step in the Corporate World

While the programme may not appeal to everyone, Insta360’s innovative approach to boosting workplace engagement and fostering connections between employees reflects a growing trend in corporate cultures globally. As the company continues to roll out its rewards for dating, the success of the initiative may set the stage for other businesses to explore similar creative ways to address employee well-being and societal challenges.

With social reactions still unfolding, it remains to be seen whether this unusual dating incentive will spark further conversations or lead to meaningful changes in China’s social landscape.

In a tale that has captivated social media across China, a married man, referred to as Xiaojun from Jilin Province, managed to carry on relationships with four women, all of whom lived within the same housing complex. Over four years, none of the women knew about each other, despite one living in the same building as his wife. This intricate web of deceit has sparked widespread debate and disbelief.

A Double Life Fueled by Fabricated Wealth

Xiaojun, raised in a financially struggling family, yearned for a life of affluence and went to great lengths to project that image. Presenting himself as a wealthy heir, he convinced his wife, Xiaojia, of his supposed fortune by gifting her counterfeit luxury items. However, she soon uncovered his financial reality and, choosing to separate but not divorce, raised their child alone.

After their split, Xiaojun moved in with another woman, Xiaohong, borrowing a substantial sum of 140,000 yuan under false pretenses. He continued to build relationships

</excerpt>

A Chinese educational firm found itself at the center of controversy after a new employee, surnamed Lou, was briefly fired for refusing to fetch breakfast and coffee for her boss. The incident, which has since sparked a public outcry, came to light when Lou shared her experience on the social media platform Xiaohongshu.

Daily Breakfast Demands Spark Conflict

Lou’s supervisor, identified only as Liu, reportedly insisted that the new hire bring her a “hot Americano and an egg” every morning. On occasion, Liu would also request a bottle of water. When Lou refused to comply, tensions between the two escalated. Lou expressed her frustration online, pointing out that such tasks were not part of her job description.

“I wasn’t hired to be a personal assistant, yet my boss expected me to handle her breakfast needs every morning,” Lou wrote in her post, highlighting what she considered unreasonable demands.

Dismissal Without Compensation

When Lou took the matter to the company’s human resources department, she hoped for a resolution. Instead, she was told to leave the company without any compensation. According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), the HR department cited her refusal to bring food and water to her boss as grounds for termination.

The decision drew widespread criticism on social media, with netizens condemning the firm’s actions. Many argued that such treatment of employees was unfair and unethical, leading to calls for an internal investigation.

Public Backlash Forces Company to Act

As the controversy gained traction online, the company came under increasing public pressure. In response to the backlash, the firm took swift action, reinstating Lou and terminating her supervisor, Liu, who was deemed responsible for the unreasonable demands.

In early September, the company issued a public statement confirming that Liu had been fired for inappropriate behavior. The firm also pledged to implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future, emphasizing its commitment to maintaining a fair and respectful workplace.

A Cautionary Tale for Employee Treatment

The incident has sparked an important conversation about workplace culture and the treatment of employees in China. While Lou has been reinstated, the situation serves as a reminder that employers must respect the boundaries of job roles and treat staff with fairness. The public response has further highlighted the importance of standing up against unjust practices in the workplace.

Unlike Western models, it emphasizes harmony with nature and offers inspiration for countries to pursue growth based on their conditions.
</excerpt>

Experts highlight how Chinese modernization offers a unique model for developing countries, emphasizing growth, development, and a new social system. China’s approach provides an alternative path to modernization, distinct from Westernization, that focuses on peace, cooperation, and harmony with nature.

A Different Path to Modernization

Modernization traditionally meant Westernization, but China’s path offers a different approach. According to Jin Ge from Peking University, Chinese modernization rejects the idea that modernization equals Westernization, offering a path based on peace, development, and harmony rather than expansion and plundering.

China’s model inspires developing countries to pursue growth by leveraging their resources and conditions. Jin emphasizes that developing nations should focus on economic growth, political development, and cultural prosperity through an independent path that considers their unique circumstances.

Enabled by Strong Leadership

A key feature of Chinese modernization is its strong leadership. China’s leaders effectively mobilize resources and maintain national unity, prioritizing anti-corruption to ensure loyalty and integrity. This approach has resulted in rapid economic growth and social stability, known as the “two miracles.”

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) recently praised China’s resilient economy, projecting a 5% growth rate for the year. According to the IMF’s Sonali Jain-Chandra, continued reforms could lead to even higher growth, demonstrating the effectiveness of China’s modernization model.

Chinese modernization offers a viable alternative for developing countries seeking a path to modernization that aligns with their values and needs, focusing on peace, cooperation, and sustainability.

</excerpt>

Congress leader Sam Pitroda sparked a major controversy with his remarks suggesting that Indians in the East resemble the Chinese while those in the South look like Africans. His comments drew swift criticism from the BJP, prompting the Congress to quickly distance itself from Pitroda’s statements, deeming them “unacceptable.”

In an interview with The Statesman, Pitroda discussed India’s status as a democratic example, stating that the country’s people have coexisted relatively harmoniously for 75 years, despite occasional conflicts. He emphasized India’s diversity, noting that people in various regions have different physical appearances, likening those in the East to Chinese, those in the West to Arabs, those in the North possibly to White individuals, and those in the South to Africans. He stressed the unity of all Indians as brothers and sisters, regardless of physical differences.

Pitroda further stated, “We all value diverse languages, religions, customs, and cuisines. This is the India I believe in, where everyone finds their place and makes compromises.”

Amidst criticism directed at Pitroda for his remarks, Congress communications in-charge Jairam Ramesh commented, “The comparisons made by Mr. Sam Pitroda in a podcast to showcase India’s diversity are deeply regrettable and cannot be condoned. The Indian National Congress firmly distances itself from these comparisons.”

BJP Condemns Sam Pitroda’s Alleged Racist Remarks

In response to Pitroda’s controversial remarks, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on X, “Sam bhai, I hail from the Northeast and I resemble an Indian. Our nation is diverse – our appearances may vary, but we stand united. Please try to understand something about our country!”

Actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut criticized the Congress and denounced Pitroda’s remarks as “racist and divisive”. In a dig, she referred to him as Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s mentor.

“They thrive on divide and rule. It’s disgusting to label fellow Indians as Chinese or African. Shame on Congress!” she tweeted.

BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad also criticized Pitroda, stating that his comparison of “diverse India” indicates his lack of understanding of the country and its culture.

“He [Pitroda] clearly doesn’t grasp the country. He advises Rahul Gandhi. Now I see why Rahul Gandhi talks nonsense… This frustration comes from their defeat. They don’t understand India or its traditions,” Ravi Shankar Prasad told news agency ANI.

BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala called Sam Pitroda a “repeat offender” and urged his removal from the Congress. “His words may be Uncle Sam’s, but the mindset is Rahul’s. </excerpt>

The Continued unilateral attempts by China to change the Line of Actual Control (LAC) status quo have impacted India-China bilateral relationship, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in its Annual Report 2021-22 released on Monday.

According to the MEA report, China has since April-May 2020, undertaken several attempts to unilaterally alter the status quo along the LAC in Western Sector, which seriously disturbed the peace and tranquillity along the LAC. These attempts by China were invariably met with an appropriate response from Indian Armed Forces, the MEA said.
According to the MEA report prepared by the Policy Planning Division of the ministry, India’s engagement with China is complex. The two sides have, however, agreed to manage their differences and not allow differences on any issue to become disputes.

Further, the two sides agreed that pending the final settlement of the boundary question, maintaining peace and tranquillity in the border areas is an essential basis for the overall development of the bilateral relationship.
Both sides have agreed to resolve the issues along the LAC in Eastern Ladakh through peaceful dialogue. Consequently, discussions have continued with the Chinese side to achieve complete disengagement from all friction points and full restoration of peace and tranquillity in the India-China Border Areas at an early date.

According to the MEA, India has maintained its engagement with China both through diplomatic and military channels to resolve the remaining issues at the earliest so as to restore peace and tranquillity in the border areas.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on September 16, 2021, met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Dushanbe, Tajikistan on the sidelines of the 21st SCO Meeting of the Head of States. The two Ministers exchanged views on the border situation along the LAC in Eastern Ladakh, the MEA said.

The two had also met earlier in Dushanbe, Tajikistan on the sidelines of the SCO Foreign Ministers’ meeting in July 2021. Military and diplomatic officials of the two sides are meeting regularly to continue their discussions on resolving the remaining issues at the earliest. Both sides agreed that a prolongation of the existing situation was not in the interest of either side as it was impacting the relationship in a negative manner.
Meanwhile, US Intelligence Community’s recent Annual Threat Assessment report said that expanded military postures by both India and China along the disputed border elevate the risk of armed confrontation between the two nuclear powers. The report said that India-China relations will remain strained in wake of the countries’ lethal clash in 2020, the most serious in decades.

The US Justice Department on Wednesday said, in the United States a Chinese student has been arrested for insulting a person. In support of democracy in China, a man was spreading fliers on which a Chinese student insulted the person.

A press release was released by the Justice Department and said, “A Berklee College of Music student, who is a citizen of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), has been arrested and charged with stalking in connection with threatening and harassing communications he allegedly made towards an individual who posted fliers in support of democracy in China.”

Meanwhile, the arrested Chinese student has been identified as Xiaolei Wu, 25. The accused will make an initial appearance in federal court in Boston, Massachusetts, later in the afternoon.

“The Department of Justice will always defend the right to engage in free speech and political expression. We allege that Wu’s threatening and harassing behavior was not free speech. Rather, it was an attempt to silence and intimidate the activist’s expressed views dissenting of the PRC,” United States Attorney Rachael S. Rollins said.

“We will not tolerate threats, harassment, or any other repression attempts against those peacefully promoting their ideas, doing their jobs, or expressing their opinions. Freedom of speech is a constitutional right here in the United States and we will protect and defend it at all costs,” Rollins stated.”

Moreover, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Joseph Bonavolonta said, “The FBI arrested Xiaolei Wu for repeatedly threatening and infringing on the rights of a civic activist who spoke out against the ruling Communist Party of China.”

“This case also highlight’s the FBI’s ongoing commitment to protecting the exercise of free speech for all citizens and our efforts to bring to justice anyone who tries to infringe on those rights,” Bonavolonta said.

However, for stalking someone can sentence to up to five years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of up to USD 250,000.

The Indian Army is keeping a close watch on all the developments which are happening in the Indian Ocean.

Meanwhile, Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar on Saturday said that the Indian Navy is also keeping watch on the movement of Chinese Navy ships that operate in the region.

During an annual presser, the Navy Chief said, “There are a lot of Chinese ships which operate in the Indian Ocean Region. We have about 4-6 PLA Navy ships, then some research vessels which operate. A large number of Chinese fishing vessels operate in the Indian Ocean Region. We keep a close watch on all developments.”

Moreover, in the Indian Ocean Region, nearly 60-odd other extra-regional forces are always present.

“We are aware it’s a vital region where there is a large amount of trade which transits, energy flows which happen. Our job is to see that India’s interests in the maritime domain are protected,” Navy Chief added.

Reportedly Navy Chief remarks came when Chinese spy ships were reported in the Indian Ocean Region.

“To achieve that, we need to be ready to go in harm’s way at really short notice,” Navy Chief said.

“The Navy is ready to Protect, preserve and promote is India’s national interest in the maritime domain. To achieve this, we have the vision of being a combat-ready, credible, cohesive, and future-proof force,” Admiral R Hari Kumar said.

However, after witnessing the Russia-Ukraine war, India cannot stay dependent on the world for its defense requirements.

“Recent global events amply underscore that we can’t remain dependent on others for our own security requirements… Government has given us very clear guidelines on Aatmanirbhar Bharat and one of the Navy’s commitments to the top leadership is that we’ll become an Aatmanirbhar Navy by 2047,” Navy Chief said.

Kris Wu, Chinese-Canadaian has been sentenced for 13 years in prison in a rape case, reported by the local media.
He will be deported after serving his term, a Chinese court reportedly stated, according to state-run media. Wu was initially jailed in July of last year, a month after a student, now 19, accused him of raping her when she was 17 during a date. She also claimed that he had done the same to other young women, but he had refuted her claims at the time.

According to the American Magazine Variety, rape in China typically results in a sentence of three to ten years in prison. However, the sentence can go all the way up to life in prison or possibly the death penalty in especially egregious situations.
Wu was tried in China in accordance with Chinese law despite being a Canadian citizen and having been born in China. Wu, also known as Wu Yifan, was born in Guangzhou in China and in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Online episodes of high-profile Wu-starring shows from major streamers and content studios, including Youku, iQiyi, MangoTV, and Bilibili, swiftly vanished last year.
In the past, famous people who got into legal trouble were cut from productions after they were finished, and their unreleased projects were put on hold indefinitely.

Numerous prestigious international companies, including Porsche and Louis Vuitton, terminated endorsement and other agreements with Wu when the rape claims surfaced last year.

Following the firing on former PM of Pakistan, Imran Khan, there were growing concerns over the safety and security of Chinese nationals working on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects, Pakistan and China on Sunday agreed to use bullet-proof vehicles for the Chinese workers for all outdoor movements.

China and Pakistan exchanged the draft minutes of the 11th Joint Cooperation Committee (JCC) of the CPEC, it said, “It has been decided that bullet-proof vehicles shall be used for all outdoor movements of the Chinese employed on projects.”

Pakistan and China did not sign the 11th Joint Cooperation Committee during the two-day visit of the Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to Beijing earlier this week, against the expectation of the public. “Due to a very short visit of only 24 hours some of the memorandum of understanding, including the minutes of the JCC, could not be signed,” the Minister said.

“About 17 meetings took place in a span of 24 hours, which left no time for some other important engagements,” he said.

According to the reports, both parties have agreed to increase the capacity of law enforcement and investigative organisations.
It had been agreed that the National Forensic Science Agency (NFSA) would be constructed on contemporary lines in order to hasten the investigations into the crimes involving Chinese people.
In order to completely upgrade the National Forensic Science Lab in Islamabad, the Pakistani side requested Chinese cooperation. According to the draught minutes, The Express Tribune stated that the Chinese side assured them of their complete support for the initiative.
In order to provide the LEA staff and private security guards with the most up-to-date training methods, the Chinese side has also agreed to set up a training facility.

The judgments may help allay the worries of the Chinese government, which had been holding off on the CPEC front until the security of its citizens was fully assured and Pakistan complied with the terms of the energy agreements.
The Express Tribune said that the draught minutes also highlighted the Chinese side’s commitment to supplying security-related equipment for the capacity building of the Pakistani law enforcement agencies.
The implementation of the CPEC projects was severely hampered by a few terrorist assaults against Chinese citizens. According to insiders, China had even previously insisted that Pakistan permit its security personnel to guard Chinese nationals.

A group of cross-party British lawmakers is in talks with Taiwan to provide Chinese-language teachers to the United Kingdom as the government seeks to phase out Confucius Institutes, according to media reports.
A Chinese state-linked Confucius language learning and teaching project has been under heavy scrutiny as the bilateral relations between China and the UK continue to deteriorate. The Taipei Times reported that there are 30 branches of the institute operating across the UK.
Notably, the schools are effectively joint ventures between a host university in Britain, a partner university in China, and the Chinese International Education Foundation, a Beijing-based organization.
Earlier in 2014, current British Prime Minister Liz Truss had praised the network of Confucius classrooms. Serving as education minister at the time, she said the institutes “will put in place a strong infrastructure for Mandarin” in the UK, as per The Taipei Times.
However, recent reports indicate that she was prepared to declare China an “acute threat” to the UK’s national security, putting it on par with Russia.
