The disturbing case, revealed through reports, highlights prolonged neglect and isolation, sparking serious concerns over the children’s living conditions and wellbeing.
</excerpt>

In a surprising Oviedo case in a northwestern Spanish city, three children, a 10-year-old and twin 8-year-olds were saved on Monday after allegedly being under complete lockdown by their parents since 2021. The children, who were all German nationals, were said to have been living in total lockdown even long after the pandemic came to an end all over the world, based on a New York Post report.

Official said the parents of the children, a 53-year-old German man and a 48-year-old German-American woman, had denied them all contact with the outside world for years. The parents were taken into custody on charges of child abandonment and domestic violence. Police believe the pair were suffering from a psychological disorder known as ‘COVID syndrome’ that caused them to impose excessively long and inordinate safety limits.

“The kids were terrible. It was completely outrageous,” an investigator reported to El Mundo. Another authority revealed to the local press, “The moment we got them out, the three children all started breathing in deeply, like they had never breathed outside air before.

Images taken by Spanish media depicted the children in face masks when they went outside. Witnesses described them as dazed and huddled over to touch the grass, as though interested in the outdoors.

Rescue efforts started after neighbours complained, mentioning that the children had not been observed going to school.

</excerpt>

In a groundbreaking move, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Soliris (eculizumab) for children aged six and older with generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG), marking the first treatment available for pediatric patients with this challenging autoimmune neuromuscular disorder. This decision brings a ray of hope to families affected by this debilitating condition and represents a significant milestone in the management of pediatric gMG.

Understanding Myasthenia Gravis and Its Impact on Children

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a rare autoimmune neuromuscular disorder characterized by weakness and rapid fatigue of voluntary muscles. In generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG), the condition affects muscles throughout the body, including those controlling the eyes, face, throat, limbs, and respiratory system. The immune system produces antibodies that mistakenly attack acetylcholine receptors at the neuromuscular junction, impairing communication between nerves and muscles and resulting in muscle weakness.

For children, the condition can significantly impact daily activities, academic performance, and overall quality of life. Symptoms often include difficulty swallowing, drooping eyelids (ptosis), muscle weakness, and in severe cases, respiratory muscle involvement, which can lead to life-threatening complications.

The pediatric population presents unique challenges in managing gMG, given their developmental needs and the long-term impact of chronic illness during formative years. The approval of Soliris marks a vital advancement in offering effective treatment options to this vulnerable group.

Soliris: Mechanism of Action and Previous Approvals

Soliris, or eculizumab, is a monoclonal antibody that targets the complement system—a part of the immune system that plays a role in inflammation and cell destruction. In gMG, harmful antibodies stimulate the complement system, leading to damage at the neuromuscular junction where nerve cells communicate with muscle cells.

By inhibiting the complement cascade, Soliris helps reduce neuromuscular damage, alleviating symptoms and improving muscle strength. Initially approved in 2007, Soliris has been used to treat adults with gMG and other rare conditions, such as paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) and atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS), both involving abnormal complement system activation.

Clinical Trial Insights and FDA Approval

The FDA’s decision to extend Soliris approval to children was primarily based on robust clinical data and safety studies. The pivotal 26-week study assessed the efficacy and safety of Soliris in children aged 12 to 17 with gMG. Results showed significant improvement in muscle strength, reduction in symptom severity, and enhanced quality of life compared to baseline measures.

While the trial focused on older children, additional safety studies provided crucial data on the drug’s use in children as young as six. The FDA emphasized the drug’s safety profile and the need for stringent safety measures, including enrollment in the Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) program. Due to an increased risk of meningococcal infections associated with Soliris, patients must receive a meningococcal vaccine at least two weeks before starting treatment.

Treatment Administration and Safety Measures

For adults, Soliris is administered via intravenous infusion over approximately 35 minutes. For children, the infusion duration ranges from one to four hours, depending on age, body weight, and tolerance. The REMS program ensures healthcare providers and patients adhere to safety protocols, emphasizing infection prevention measures.

Side effects of Soliris include headache, nausea, diarrhea, and the potential for serious meningococcal infections. Parents and caregivers are advised to closely monitor children for signs of infection and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms arise.

Expert Opinions and Impact on Pediatric Care

Sharon Hesterlee, PhD, Chief Research Officer at the Muscular Dystrophy Association, expressed optimism about the approval, stating, “This approval represents a major advancement in the treatment of pediatric myasthenia gravis and provides hope to families navigating this complex disease.” She highlighted the importance of effective treatments in improving the quality of life for children living with gMG.

Joanna Smith, a pediatric neurologist, emphasized the significance of early intervention: “Early and effective treatment can drastically alter the disease trajectory for children, allowing them to lead more normal, active lives. Soliris offers a much-needed option for young patients.”

Challenges and Considerations in Pediatric Treatment

While the approval of Soliris is a major step forward, it also raises challenges in managing pediatric gMG. Children often have different responses to treatment than adults, and long-term safety data in the pediatric population is still limited. The extended infusion time for children can be a barrier, requiring specialized care centers with trained healthcare professionals.

Cost and access to treatment are additional concerns. Soliris is an expensive therapy, and its high cost may limit accessibility for some families. Insurance coverage, patient assistance programs, and government healthcare initiatives play crucial roles in ensuring equitable access to this life-changing treatment.

Future Directions and Research in Myasthenia Gravis

The approval of Soliris for children underscores the importance of ongoing research into gMG and other autoimmune disorders. Future studies aim to explore long-term safety in pediatric patients, optimal dosing strategies, and the development of newer, more targeted therapies with fewer side effects.

Researchers are also investigating genetic and environmental factors contributing to gMG, with the hope of identifying biomarkers for early diagnosis and treatment personalization. Advances in gene therapy and complement system inhibitors hold promise for more effective and durable treatment options in the future.

The FDA’s approval of Soliris for children with generalized myasthenia gravis represents a transformative development in the treatment landscape for this rare autoimmune disease. It offers new hope for improved symptom management, enhanced quality of life, and better long-term outcomes for pediatric patients and their families.

As the medical community continues to explore innovative treatments, the focus remains on improving the lives of children with gMG, ensuring they receive the care and support they need to thrive despite their diagnosis.

</excerpt>

In a groundbreaking medical achievement, doctors in London have made history by curing blindness in children born with a rare genetic condition, Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA). This condition causes severe retinal dystrophy, leading to total blindness due to a defect in the AIPL1 gene. Affected children are typically legally blind from birth, unable to perceive any light or visual stimuli. However, recent advancements in gene therapy have provided a ray of hope for these children, allowing them to see shapes, recognize faces, and even perform tasks like reading and writing. This achievement has opened new frontiers in the treatment of childhood blindness, offering transformative possibilities for future generations.

The Revolutionary Treatment

The breakthrough came after a pioneering gene therapy was administered to four children with LCA at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. The therapy involved injecting healthy copies of the AIPL1 gene into the retina using a non-invasive, keyhole surgery technique that lasted just 60 minutes. The AIPL1 gene, which is crucial for the function of photoreceptors in the retina, was introduced into the children’s eyes through a harmless virus that acted as a delivery mechanism. This gene is essential for converting light into electrical signals that the brain interprets as vision.

This innovative therapy was applied to just one eye per patient initially, as a safety precaution, to ensure no adverse reactions could occur. The patients, all between the ages of one and two, came from various countries including the United States, Turkey, and Tunisia, and their treatment was followed for five years. The results of this transformative treatment were published in The Lancet, one of the world’s leading medical journals, underscoring the significance of this achievement.

The therapy’s impact has been nothing short of astounding. After treatment, the children were able to see shapes, identify their parents’ faces, and even engage in everyday activities such as finding toys and identifying objects. In some cases, the children gained the ability to read and write—functions previously unimaginable for those with untreated LCA.

The Importance of Gene Therapy

LCA, a severe form of retinal dystrophy, had previously been considered untreatable. Children with this condition typically experience total vision loss in the first few years of life, and the visual impairment progresses rapidly. Before the introduction of gene therapy, there were no effective treatments for LCA, and children affected by the condition faced the prospect of growing up in a world of darkness, completely dependent on others for basic activities.

Professor Michel Michaelides, a consultant retinal specialist at Moorfields Eye Hospital and Professor of Ophthalmology at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, praised the results of the treatment. He stated, “The outcomes for these children are hugely impressive and show the power of gene therapy to change lives. We have, for the first time, an effective treatment for the most severe form of childhood blindness, and a potential paradigm shift to treatment at the earliest stages of the disease.”

This gene therapy not only restored some visual ability but also had a profound impact on the children’s ability to engage with their surroundings. Children who were once unable to track even a basic light source began reacting to sunlight, identifying objects, and engaging in activities like playing with toys and recognizing familiar faces. One of the most moving stories comes from the parents of Jace, a six-year-old boy who was two years old at the time of his treatment. Jace, who was previously unable to track any objects placed in front of him, can now identify toys from a distance, pick up small objects from the floor, and even interact more actively with his environment.

Jace’s parents, DJ and Brendan, shared their emotional experience. DJ explained how, prior to surgery, Jace would not be able to respond to any objects or visual cues. “You could have held up any object, even a couple of inches away from Jace’s face, and he would not be able to track it,” said DJ. “Now we get calls and notes from school that he’s stealing phones out of teachers’ back pockets, which is hysterical to us.” This response is a testament to the dramatic improvement that gene therapy has brought to these children’s lives, especially considering the severity of their condition prior to treatment.

Brendan, Jace’s father, recalled the moment when he first noticed a positive change in his son’s behavior. “I remember welling up and getting really emotional because that was the first time that Jace ever had any reaction to any sort of light stimulus,” he said. This was a pivotal moment for the family, marking the beginning of their son’s journey toward regaining some sight after years of blindness.

Expanding the Reach of Gene Therapy

The success of the initial four children in London has paved the way for further treatment opportunities. Following the success of this groundbreaking therapy, a total of seven more children have been treated at Evelina London Children’s Hospital by specialists from Great Ormond Street, Moorfields, and St Thomas’ Hospital. These subsequent cases highlight the potential for this therapy to transform the lives of even more children suffering from the same debilitating condition.

The therapeutic approach was developed by UCL, in partnership with the gene therapy company MeiraGTx, under a special license granted by the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA). This partnership has been instrumental in making this revolutionary treatment a reality, demonstrating how innovation and collaboration in the medical field can lead to life-changing solutions.

While the results from these early treatments are encouraging, specialists remain cautious about the long-term effects. The children involved in the study will continue to be monitored over the next few years to assess the durability of the improvements and ensure that no complications arise. The hope is that this treatment can be used for other forms of retinal dystrophy and eventually become a standard treatment for certain types of blindness.

A New Era in Medical Treatment

The success of gene therapy in treating LCA represents a monumental step forward in the fight against childhood blindness. For years, blindness caused by genetic conditions like LCA was considered irreversible. However, with advances in gene therapy, medical researchers are now able to offer hope to children who would have otherwise faced a lifetime of total blindness.

This achievement not only signifies a major milestone in the field of ophthalmology but also demonstrates the power of genetic medicine in addressing previously untreatable conditions. The ability to deliver healthy genes directly into the retina opens new doors for treating a wide range of genetic diseases, potentially transforming the lives of millions of people who suffer from genetic disorders worldwide.

The success of these treatments also highlights the importance of early intervention. The children treated in London received the therapy at a young age—between one and two years old—an age where intervention can make the most significant difference. Early treatment allows the therapy to have a more profound impact on visual development, giving the children the best chance at leading normal, active lives.

The future of gene therapy in treating blindness looks incredibly promising, with new developments on the horizon. As more patients are treated, researchers will continue to gather valuable data that will help refine and improve the therapy, potentially expanding its effectiveness for other conditions related to the retina.

For the children treated in London, their newfound ability to see is a life-changing gift, one that has forever altered their futures. From recognizing their parents’ faces to playing with toys and engaging with the world around them, these children have experienced a miracle—a miracle made possible by the advancements in gene therapy. As this treatment continues to evolve and reach more patients, there is hope that the future of retinal diseases will be brighter than ever before.

</excerpt>

Divorce is often a deeply personal decision, one that affects not only the couple involved but also their children, sometimes in ways that extend well into adulthood. While the emotional toll of parental separation is widely understood, a recent study has uncovered an alarming physical consequence for the children of divorced parents. The study, published in PLOS One, suggests that children who experience parental divorce are at a significantly higher risk of suffering a stroke later in life. According to the research, the odds of having a stroke are 60% higher for individuals whose parents divorced during their childhood compared to those who grew up in intact families.

The Study: Unveiling a Troubling Connection

This groundbreaking research was conducted by scholars from the University of Toronto, Tyndale University, and the University of Texas at Arlington. It involved a study group of 13,205 Americans, all born before 1960 and aged 65 and older. The results of the study revealed that one in nine people with divorced parents had been diagnosed with a stroke, while only one in fifteen of those whose parents stayed together suffered the same fate. These statistics are startling, especially when considering that stroke remains one of the leading causes of death in the United States.

The research further revealed that 7.3% of the participants had experienced a stroke, and 14% had experienced parental divorce during childhood. Importantly, the study controlled for other factors such as physical or sexual abuse during childhood, ensuring that the results specifically pointed to parental divorce as a factor linked to stroke risk.

Dr. Esme Fuller-Thomson, senior author of the study, expressed both sadness and surprise at the findings. She noted that the connection between parental divorce and stroke risk was of a similar magnitude to well-established stroke risk factors, including diabetes and male gender. This insight sheds light on the long-term physical consequences that emotional trauma can have on the body, particularly when it involves family separation.

Chronic Stress: The Culprit Behind the Stroke Risk?

One of the key theories behind the study’s findings is the chronic stress that children often experience during their parents’ divorce. Prolonged exposure to stress during childhood can have lasting effects on the brain and the body. Specifically, the researchers pointed to the dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, a system that regulates the body’s stress response. When the HPA axis is disrupted, it can lead to long-term health problems, including an increased risk of cardiovascular issues such as strokes.

The study did not definitively identify the exact mechanisms at play, but experts believe that the chronic stress experienced during a divorce can lead to heightened levels of stress hormones, which can adversely affect the developing brain and a child’s ability to cope with future stress. These lasting effects might continue into adulthood, raising the likelihood of stroke and other health complications.

Social Dynamics and the Role of Stigma

In addition to biological factors, the social context surrounding a divorce may also contribute to an increased stroke risk. For older generations, divorce was relatively uncommon and often stigmatized, making the experience especially traumatic for children. The higher levels of parental conflict preceding the divorce may have further intensified the emotional strain on children, making the divorce not only a personal loss but also a public event that carried societal judgment.

These social dynamics, combined with the biological effects of chronic stress, create a perfect storm that can have lasting health consequences for children of divorced parents. It is important to note that while the study establishes a correlation between parental divorce and stroke risk, it does not claim to prove causation. As Dr. Fuller-Thomson explained, the research simply highlights a relationship between the two factors, not a direct cause-and-effect scenario.

A Growing Concern in India

While divorce rates in India remain much lower than those in Western countries, the trend is slowly changing. As societal attitudes toward marriage and family continue to evolve, divorce rates in India are gradually rising. A recent analysis of data from the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) found that divorce rates in both rural and urban areas have increased over the past several years.

In rural areas, the proportion of divorced or separated women has been steadily climbing, reflecting a shift in traditionally conservative settings. In urban India, divorce rates among men have also seen a noticeable increase. This upward trend, however, remains relatively low compared to Western countries, where divorce rates are significantly higher. In the United States, for instance, the divorce rate was 14.56 per 1,000 married women in 2022, according to Bowling Green State University.

As divorce becomes more common in India, it is crucial to consider the potential long-term effects of parental separation on children. While Indian society may not yet fully recognize the connection between parental divorce and health risks such as stroke, it is important to address this issue, especially as divorce rates continue to rise.

The Psychological and Physiological Toll of Divorce

The psychological toll of divorce on children is well-documented. Children of divorced parents often experience feelings of sadness, anger, and confusion. These emotions can contribute to mental health challenges, such as depression and anxiety. However, the physical health effects, such as the increased risk of stroke, are less frequently discussed but are equally significant.

Children who witness their parents’ divorce may struggle with issues of self-worth and security. This emotional turmoil can manifest in physical symptoms, including high blood pressure, chronic headaches, and sleep disturbances. The long-term effects of these stressors may contribute to an increased risk of serious health problems, including cardiovascular issues such as strokes.

The Need for Early Intervention and Support

Given the growing body of research suggesting that parental divorce can have lasting health consequences, it is crucial to provide early intervention and support for children going through this difficult time. Mental health support, including counseling and therapy, can help children process the emotional trauma of divorce and reduce the long-term impact on their physical health. Moreover, promoting healthy coping mechanisms, such as physical activity and stress-reduction techniques, can help mitigate the negative effects of chronic stress.

Parents who are going through a divorce should also be mindful of the impact it may have on their children’s health and well-being. Open communication and reassurance can help children feel secure and supported, reducing the emotional strain of the situation. Ensuring that children have at least one adult in their lives who provides emotional stability can also play a crucial role in reducing stress and fostering resilience.

The Lasting Impact of Divorce

The research highlighting the link between parental divorce and stroke risk in later life is both sobering and enlightening. While divorce is often seen as a personal issue, it has far-reaching effects on the physical and emotional health of children. Chronic stress, the dysregulation of the HPA axis, and social stigma are all factors that contribute to the heightened risk of stroke in children of divorced parents. Although the study does not establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship, it underscores the importance of providing children with the support and resources they need to cope with the emotional turmoil of divorce.

As divorce rates continue to rise in India and around the world, it is essential to consider the long-term consequences for children. Providing mental health support, fostering resilience, and promoting healthy coping strategies can help reduce the physical and emotional toll of parental separation. Through early intervention and support, we can help mitigate the risks and ensure that children of divorced parents grow up to lead healthy and fulfilling lives.

While promoting his upcoming film Baby John in Mumbai, Varun, who is a father to daughter Lara, spoke about his focus on creating kid-friendly content.

“Even in films early on in my career I would always concentrate on creating that can be watched by kids. I want to make films that children can watch, they can enjoy, put a smile on their faces and that’s why I enjoy a lot with kids,” Varun said.

In a recent appearance on a chat show, Varun opened up about how his life has changed since he and his wife Natasha Dalal welcomed their daughter Lara.

“I used to get scolded by one woman before, but now I get scolded by two. I am learning how to burp her, how to swaddle her. Sometimes when she starts crying, I feel terrified. Sometimes at night, when you are exhausted and she starts crying, I pretend to get up, but Natasha gets up before me and goes to soothe her. No, no…but you have to go because you feel anxious,” Varun shared.

Varun and Natasha’s daughter was born on June 3. Announcing her birth, Varun posted an adorable video on Instagram. The clip featured an illustration of his pet dog, Joey, holding a placard that read, “Welcome Lil sis.” The post also included the text: “Baby Dhawan, Proud parents Natasha and Varun, Proud Family – ‘Dalals and Dhawans.'” In the caption, Varun wrote, “Our Baby Girl Is Here,” and added, “Thank u for all the good wishes for the mama and the baby.”

Meanwhile, Varun is preparing for the release of Baby John, a film produced by Murad Khetani, Priya Atlee, and Jyoti Deshpande. Directed by A. Kaleeswaran and presented by Atlee, the movie is set to hit theaters on December 25.

</excerpt>

Children’s social media usage has always been a contentious issue, with concerns about online safety, mental health challenges, and exposure to age-inappropriate content. Traditionally, this was seen as a problem for parents to address, with parental consent being enough for a child to access social media in many jurisdictions. However, Australia has now pioneered legislation forbidding individuals under sixteen from accessing major social media platforms, regardless of parental permission. For the past week, the world has been debating Australia’s social media ban for children under 16. While some have lauded this bold move, others have criticized the hurried passage of the bill without adequate deliberation. Set to take effect in 2025, the law aims to protect the mental and physical well-being of Australian adolescents through strict age restrictions on social media use.
In India, the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP), requires social media companies to obtain verifiable parental consent to process any personal data of a child (defined as anyone below the age of 18). However, since the DPDP rules are yet to be notified, how such consent will be obtained remains unclear. In August 2024, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) proposed a KYC-based system for verifying children’s age under DPDP compliance. Against this backdrop, this article compares Australia’s outright ban with India’s position and considers whether India should adopt a similar approach, while also suggesting alternative measures.

Australia’s Age Gating on Social Media
The Online Safety Amendment (Social Media Minimum Age) Bill 2024 amended the Online Safety Act 2021, shifting the responsibility for user protection from parents and children to social media platforms. It introduced a broad definition of “age-restricted social media platforms,” encompassing a wide range of commonly recognized social media services. Australians will not need official ID for age assurance under the law. Instead, platforms have 12 months to find suitable alternatives or face $49.5 million fines. The 2024–25 Budget committed $6.5 million to trial age assurance technologies to determine their efficacy, maturity, and suitability for Australia. Platforms must also ringfence age verification data and destroy it immediately, with strict penalties for noncompliance. Additionally, it mandates a review within two years of implementation, allowing the Government to recalibrate policies as needed to reflect changes in the behavior of social media platforms and young users.

India’s KYC-Based Age Verification

While there are no specific age gating laws on children’s social media usage in India, section 9 of the DPDP act requires data fiduciaries such as social media platforms to obtain verifiable parental consent for processing data of children under 18 years. The act also prohibits tracking children’s behaviour or to targeting advertisements to them. The NCPCR, intends to seek proposals from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to introduce KYC-based age verification mechanisms for children under the DPDP Act. The MeitY has already engaged with social media companies to explore potential age verification solutions. While options such as Digilocker and Aadhaar were considered, but they were deemed ineffective for age verification. However, the effectiveness of this mode of age verification is highly uncertain, as it involves collecting extensive personal details of children and creating large pools of potentially sensitive data in the hands of various platforms. Misuse or security breaches might occur with this data.

Lessons from Global Practices

Around the world, efforts to protect children online have ranged from strict regulations like the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) to self-regulatory measures taken by technology companies. Age verification is required in many countries, including the United States, EU, France, Germany, Belgium, Norway and UK among others. Online services and apps in the US must get parental consent before collecting data on children under 13 under COPPA. Similar consequences are seen in the EU Digital Services Act and UK Online Safety Bill. UK’s Online Safety Bill enforces age verification to prevent teens from seeing age-inappropriate information. Parents must approve children’s social media use till 13–16 in Norway, France, and Belgium. These rules encourage platforms to enforce age verification procedures.

Balancing Safety, Accessibility and Parental Autonomy

The negative effects of social media on teenagers are widely reported around the world, such as cyberbullying, bad eating or sleeping habits, mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. However, for the young children that are often touted as digital natives, social media is a modern digital playground to make friends with others and extended family, express themselves, learn new skills, and join campaigns and activities. Moreover, laws such as those in Australia deprive parents of the right to choose what is best for their children since not all children are equally vulnerable to online threats and may use these sites for good.
In its March 2021 general comment on the UNCRC, the UN acknowledged children as digital rights holders and stressed their engagement by enabling them with digital literacy and encouraging digital citizenship. An outright ban on social media might violate international children’s rights to accessibility and participation.

A Path Forward

Today’s children are born and brought up in a digitally connected world, and the internet is an integral part of their social development. Hence, an absolute ban may force them to use it secretly, potentially causing more harm than it does now. There should be a cooperative strategy to involve legislators, technology providers, educators, and civil society in setting an environment in which children may flourish safely online. Technologies like AI-driven content filtering and blockchain verification systems hold potential for the improvement of safety protocols. International cooperation with agencies such as ICMEC can help keep the internet safe for children, foster the exchange of best practices, and facilitate the creation of global standards for protecting children online. Age gating and verification based on KYC require careful design with considerations related to the privacy, ease of use, and inclusiveness. There is a need to introduce strong digital literacy programmes into education to teach children safe online navigation, privacy and risk recognition. As things stand today, Indian parents are tasked with overseeing their tech-savvy children’s social media usage, despite many parents lacking the necessary digital literacy. Therefore, laws like those in Australia, which place the onus on platforms to verify users and ensure children do not access them until the prescribed age, are a welcome move.

</excerpt>

Lawsuit Accuses Major Food Companies of Marketing ‘Addictive’ Food to Kids: An In-Depth Analysis

In recent years, a growing wave of lawsuits has been targeting major food companies for allegedly marketing products that are not only unhealthy but also designed to be addictive. These lawsuits highlight concerns about how food manufacturers formulate and promote their products to children, raising ethical, health, and legal issues that have far-reaching implications for public health and corporate accountability.

The Allegations: Marketing ‘Addictive’ Foods to Vulnerable Audiences

The central claim in such lawsuits is that food companies intentionally design their products with ingredients that trigger addiction-like responses in the brain. This is particularly concerning when these marketing strategies target children, a demographic highly susceptible to advertising and lacking the cognitive ability to fully understand the long-term consequences of their choices.

Critics argue that companies use a combination of sugar, salt, fat, and artificial flavorings to create hyper-palatable foods. These foods stimulate dopamine release, leading to cravings and overconsumption. This pattern is likened to the addictive mechanisms seen with drugs or alcohol. Coupled with colorful packaging, cartoon mascots, and direct advertising on platforms like YouTube and social media, children are lured into consuming products that could harm their health.

The Role of Food Addiction in Public Health

Food addiction is not yet universally recognized as a clinical diagnosis, but growing evidence supports the notion that certain processed foods can be as addictive as substances like nicotine. Research indicates that foods high in sugar and fat activate reward pathways in the brain, creating a cycle of cravings and overindulgence. This phenomenon is particularly worrisome in children, whose developing brains are more sensitive to these stimuli.

The prevalence of obesity, diabetes, and other diet-related diseases has been on the rise, particularly in younger populations. According to public health experts, aggressive marketing of addictive food products is a significant contributor to this trend. Childhood obesity, in particular, has emerged as a global epidemic, with far-reaching consequences for physical and mental health.

Key Players in the Lawsuit

While specific details of the lawsuits vary, they generally target some of the largest food and beverage companies in the world—those with a significant market share and the resources to dominate advertising channels. The lawsuits often focus on popular snack foods, sugary beverages, and breakfast cereals, which are staples in many households but are laden with high amounts of sugar, sodium, and unhealthy fats.

Some of the claims brought forth in these lawsuits include:

Deceptive Marketing Practices: Advertising products as healthy or essential for growth while hiding the true nutritional content.

Targeting Vulnerable Populations: Utilizing marketing strategies aimed specifically at children, including the use of mascots, jingles, and endorsements by influencers.

Misleading Health Claims: Suggesting that products are “natural,” “organic,” or “fortified,” despite being highly processed and nutritionally poor.

Legal and Ethical Implications

The lawsuits raise significant ethical questions about corporate responsibility. Should companies prioritize profits over public health? Do they have a moral obligation to avoid exploiting vulnerable populations like children?

From a legal standpoint, these lawsuits aim to establish accountability for the health impacts of consuming such products. Plaintiffs argue that food companies knowingly exploit the addictive potential of their products and mislead consumers, which constitutes unfair and deceptive practices under consumer protection laws.

One notable aspect of these cases is the attempt to frame food addiction as a public health crisis akin to the tobacco industry’s role in the smoking epidemic. In fact, some legal experts have drawn parallels between these lawsuits and the historic litigation against tobacco companies, which ultimately led to massive settlements and stricter advertising regulations.

The Broader Impact on Society

If these lawsuits succeed, they could pave the way for significant changes in how food companies operate. Potential outcomes include:

Stricter Advertising Regulations: Limiting the scope of marketing aimed at children, similar to restrictions placed on alcohol and tobacco advertising.

Transparency in Ingredients and Nutrition: Mandatory disclosures about the addictive potential of certain ingredients or clearer labeling of sugar, salt, and fat content.

Policy Changes: Governments may introduce policies such as sugar taxes, bans on certain food additives, or restrictions on the sale of unhealthy foods in schools.

The ripple effect of these changes could be transformative for public health. By curbing the aggressive marketing of unhealthy foods, it may be possible to reduce the prevalence of diet-related diseases, improve nutrition literacy, and promote healthier eating habits from a young age.

Challenges and Counterarguments

The food industry is a powerful entity with significant lobbying resources, and it has been quick to defend its practices. Companies argue that:

Consumer Choice: Individuals have the freedom to choose what they consume, and companies cannot be held responsible for personal decisions.

Economic Impact: The food and beverage industry contributes significantly to the economy, and excessive regulations could harm jobs and innovation.

Scientific Uncertainty: The concept of food addiction is still debated in the scientific community, making it difficult to establish a legal basis for such claims.

These arguments present formidable challenges for plaintiffs and public health advocates. However, the growing body of evidence linking processed foods to health crises strengthens the case for reform.

Moving Forward: Advocating for Change

The lawsuits against food companies are part of a broader movement to address the root causes of the obesity epidemic and promote healthier lifestyles. Public health organizations, educators, and policymakers play a crucial role in advocating for change. Some key steps include:

Educational Campaigns: Raising awareness about the dangers of processed foods and teaching children and parents about balanced diets.

Policy Advocacy: Supporting legislation that limits harmful marketing practices and promotes access to healthy foods.

Corporate Accountability: Encouraging companies to adopt ethical marketing practices and reformulate their products to prioritize health over profit.

The lawsuits accusing major food companies of marketing addictive foods to children highlight a critical public health issue that demands attention. As society grapples with the rising prevalence of diet-related diseases, these legal battles serve as a wake-up call for industry reform and consumer awareness. By holding companies accountable and advocating for healthier alternatives, it may be possible to create a future where children are no longer exploited by harmful marketing practices and can grow up with the tools to make informed, healthy choices.

</excerpt>

A new bill aimed at preventing today’s British children from ever legally purchasing cigarettes began its journey through Parliament on Tuesday, marking a significant step in the UK’s efforts to combat smoking.

The Tobacco and Vapes Bill is designed to reduce smoking-related deaths, which currently account for around 80,000 fatalities each year, by addressing the leading preventable cause of death and illness in the country.

Must Read: 2024 US Presidential Election: Hindu Americans Emerge As Key Voting Bloc In Presidential Race

In addition, the bill proposes restrictions on smoking and vaping in outdoor spaces, including playgrounds and entrances to schools and hospitals. However, a proposed ban on smoking in pub beer gardens was removed after opposition from pub owners, reflecting a compromise in the scope of the legislation. Health Secretary Wes Streeting acknowledged that the hospitality industry had “taken a real battering in recent years” and said it is not “the right time” to impose a smoking ban outside pubs.

The bill also aims to restrict vape flavors and ban brightly colored packaging aimed at children, in response to “a cynical industry that has sought to addict a new generation of children to nicotine,” according to Streeting.

Furthermore, the bill continues a plan from the previous Conservative government, which was ousted in the July general election, to gradually raise the minimum age for purchasing tobacco by one year each year, ensuring that no one born after January 1, 2009, will ever be able to buy cigarettes. It is currently illegal to sell cigarettes, tobacco products, or vapes to those under 18.

If passed — which is expected due to the governing Labour Party’s large majority in Parliament — the bill will establish some of the toughest anti-smoking measures in the world.

The government described the bill as a measure that “breaks the cycle of addiction and paves the way for a smoke-free U.K.”

While the number of smokers in Britain has declined by two-thirds since the 1970s, official figures show that about 6.4 million people, or approximately 13% of the population, still smoke.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the AQI readings were 302 at Anand Vihar, 193 at Chandni Chowk, 280 at ITO, 273 at IGI Airport, 321 at Wazipur, 239 at Lodhi Road, and 312 at Narela. On Tuesday, the 24-hour AQI in Delhi was recorded at 304.

Mahesh Palawat from Skymet Weather Services told PTI, “This wind pattern has kept stubble-burning smoke away from reaching the national capital. While the wind speed was moderate in the afternoon, it has calmed since then. The improvement in air quality is largely due to this wind pattern.”

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution is defined as “contamination of the indoor or outdoor environment by any chemical, physical or biological agent that modifies the natural characteristics of the atmosphere.” The AQI scale is categorized as follows: 0-50 is “good,” 51-100 is “satisfactory,” 101-200 is “moderate,” 201-300 is “poor,” 301-400 is “very poor,” 401-500 is “severe,” and above 500 is classified as “severe plus.”

Air pollution can have severe health consequences, particularly for children. Here’s how poor air quality affects their health:

Respiratory Issues

Children are more prone to respiratory problems such as asthma and bronchitis due to their smaller lungs and developing respiratory systems. Pollutants like particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) and nitrogen dioxide can irritate airways, making it difficult for them to breathe and increasing the risk of chronic respiratory diseases.

Weaker Immune Systems

As children’s immune systems are still developing, they are more vulnerable to infections and diseases linked to air pollution. Exposure to harmful pollutants like sulfur dioxide and ground-level ozone can impair immune function, making children more susceptible to colds, flu, and other infections.

Impact on Brain Development

Exposure to pollutants, particularly heavy metals like lead and chemicals such as carbon monoxide, can negatively affect children’s brain development. Research indicates that these pollutants can lead to cognitive issues, reduced IQ levels, and attention deficits, resulting in long-term effects on learning, memory, and overall brain function.

Higher Risk of Allergies

Polluted air raises the likelihood of allergies in children. Chemicals like ozone and particulate matter increase the respiratory system’s sensitivity, causing allergic reactions to substances such as pollen and dust. This can lead to symptoms like itchy eyes, sneezing, and skin irritation.

Impact on Foetal Development

When pregnant women inhale polluted air, toxins can cross the placenta, adversely affecting foetal development. Such exposure raises the risks of preterm births, low birth weights, and developmental delays in infants.

Poor Physical Growth

Children exposed to elevated pollution levels may experience stunted growth due to the stress these pollutants place on their bodies. This includes limitations in both height and lung development. Chronic exposure may also lead to cardiovascular issues, impacting overall health.

</excerpt>

In today’s tech-driven world, the way children interact with their surroundings has undergone significant changes. Electronic devices like smartphones and tablets are becoming integral parts of their daily lives from a young age. While technology offers numerous benefits, it also raises concerns about how screen addiction can impact children’s development. Parents now face the challenge of balancing the advantages of digital tools with ensuring children participate in activities that foster healthy growth.

In Brazil, children’s use of smartphones has surged in recent years. Studies show that many children are exposed to mobile devices from an early age, a trend fueled by the availability of educational apps and digital games. While these tools are seen as beneficial for cognitive development and early tech exposure, they also contribute to rising screen time.

A recent study reveals that 70% of Brazilian children between the ages of 3 and 6 use mobile devices daily. Although these tools have some educational value, prolonged screen exposure can lead to emotional, physical, and social challenges. Children who spend too much time on screens may struggle to manage their emotions and become overly reliant on digital entertainment, which can interfere with social interactions and reduce their ability to communicate effectively face-to-face.

Recommended Screen Time for Different Age Groups

In light of increasing concerns, health and education experts have developed screen time guidelines to help parents regulate children’s use of electronic devices. These recommendations vary by age group to ensure a healthy balance of screen exposure and developmental activities.

Children Under 2 Years Old

According to the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics, as cited on the government portal gov.br, children under 2 should have no screen time at all. The focus should be on real-world interactions and physical play, which are vital for brain development and social skills. Introducing screens at an early age can disrupt engagement with the environment and delay language development.

Children Aged 2 to 5 Years

For this age group, screen time should be limited to no more than two hours per day. It is important to balance screen use with physical activity, which promotes motor skills and social development. Excessive screen time can reduce opportunities for creative play, physical exercise, and interpersonal learning, all of which are crucial for early development.

Children Aged 6 to 12 Years

As children enter this age bracket, they are often more exposed to technology, including video games. However, screen time should not exceed three hours per day. Beyond this limit, screen exposure can affect school performance, social relationships, and physical health. Encouraging a variety of non-digital activities is essential for fostering a well-rounded lifestyle.

Children Over 12 Years Old

For teenagers, screen time should be customized based on individual needs but should generally not surpass three hours per day. It is crucial to monitor the content they consume, ensuring it is age-appropriate and balanced with offline activities such as hobbies, exercise, and social interactions. Overuse of screens during adolescence can lead to concentration issues, sleep disturbances, and contribute to a sedentary lifestyle with long-term health consequences.

Despite these recommendations, the World Health Organization (WHO) reports that only 25% of children under 2 and 33% of children aged 2 to 5 follow the suggested screen time guidelines. This discrepancy highlights the importance of establishing healthy screen habits early on.

Effects of Excessive Screen Time on Eyes

Prolonged use of digital devices poses significant risks to eye health. One common issue is digital eye strain, also known as computer vision syndrome, which arises from extended screen exposure. Symptoms include dry eyes, headaches, blurred vision, and general discomfort.

Children are particularly susceptible to these effects as their eyes are still developing. Continuous screen use can reduce blinking, leading to dryness and irritation. Additionally, blue light from screens can disrupt sleep patterns, particularly when devices are used before bedtime. This disruption can negatively affect sleep quality, which in turn impacts overall health and development.

Furthermore, excessive screen time is linked to a growing incidence of myopia (nearsightedness) in children. Studies have found that increased indoor time spent on screens is associated with higher rates of myopia. Encouraging outdoor play and minimizing screen exposure, particularly during crucial developmental periods, can help lower the risk of eye-related issues.

</excerpt>

In current times, it seems that parents are actively involved in their preschool-going child’s learning. However, for many parents, this involvement extends only to dropping their kids off at school and picking them back up in the afternoon without paying much attention to what they learned on a particular day. If parents want their children to get the complete benefits of their preschool education, they must look for ways to participate actively in their kid’s day-to-day learning. With parents’ involvement, the child’s learning outcomes multiply significantly with an increased retention power, laying the foundation for their academic success in formal years of education.

What are the Benefits of Parental Involvement in Early Education?

When the parents are actively involved in their child’s educational journey, the child feels motivated to perform better academically. It becomes easier for the child to grasp and retain the information in the brain for a longer time when the concepts practiced at school are revised at home. By participating in their child’s early education, parents can develop a close bond with their child. Through this close parent-child bond, children learn to trust their parents, share their experiences, and receive guidance and support whenever required.

By being involved in their child’s preschool education, parents can obtain information about the specific needs of their child. By addressing that particular need, parents can help their child in performing better at school. With active involvement, parents also get information about their child’s strengths and weaknesses and the areas where they need to work hard. A child’s self-esteem increases substantially when they see their parents taking an interest in their educational journey. The increased self-esteem leads kids to take on more challenges and develop a willingness to achieve better academic outcomes.

How can Parents Get Involved in Their Child’s Early Education Journey?

Parents can get involved in their child’s early education journey by giving their kids a dedicated learning space where they can explore various age-appropriate books, educational toys, and materials to cultivate their curiosity and creativity. Parents can ask their children questions like what they learned in a particular class and how the lessons they learned can be applied to out-of-the-classroom situations. Such questions help children reflect on their lessons and innovatively find various situations where the concepts are applicable.

An important part of being involved in a kid’s early education journey is planning regular meetings with teachers. These meetings keep parents informed about their child’s progress and the aspects that need improvement. Through such meetings with teachers, parents can become aware of the methods of teaching used in the classroom for teaching concepts to complement the teacher’s efforts and lessons at home. Regular meetings with parents offer teachers important insights into the learning styles of their students. This two-way communication ensures that both parents and teachers are following an aligned approach to the child’s overall development.

How are Playschools Involving Parents in Their Child’s Educational Journey?

Various playschools are now aware of the vital role parents play in children’s educational journey and are devising multiple strategies through which the rate of active participation of parents in kids’ preschool education can be increased. Bachpan Play School has developed one such remarkable strategy through a unique educational curriculum, which they proudly call the “SPROUT” curriculum. Bachpan’s famous “SPROUT” curriculum was formed with extensive research of 35000 hours, which consists of revolutionary tools like Speak-O-Pen and books, over 500 hours of digital educational content, and an integrated learning kit. Through such innovative self-learning educational tools, parents feel empowered to actively take part in their children’s education and foster a love for learning in them while developing their retention.

The S-ILK(Sprout Integrated Learning Kit) is a pivotal component of Bachpan’s “SPROUT” Curriculum, specifically designed to bridge classroom learning with parental involvement and home engagement. This kit consists of various developmentally appropriate DIY activities that aid in fostering higher-order thinking skills in children. This initiative by Bachpan provides parents with hands-on experience to effectively participate in their child’s learning journey, making education a collaborative effort between the school and home

Involvement in a kid’s educational journey becomes convenient for parents with practical tools to manage their children’s progress, assignments, and communication with teachers. To make the academic journey more effortless for parents and students, Bachpan Play School launched its unique 360 support app, which stands true to its name for providing parents with an effective learning management tool. Through Bachpan’s 360 support app, parents can access a comprehensive range of educational content and practice tests for their children. This app also provides parents with information regarding their child’s academic and extracurricular progress, with detailed information about the areas that require additional support.

Parental involvement in their child’s education shouldn’t be limited to just dropping them off at school. It is high time for parents to adopt a more engaged and supportive approach when it comes to their involvement in their child’s early education. It is easier than ever now to be a smart parent and take advantage of the numerous resources and information available to increase the pace of the child’s learning and retention. The benefits of parents’ active participation in their kids’ academic path go beyond the educational benefits, building a solid foundation of trust, confidence, and curiosity in the kids that will last a lifetime.

Pioneering preschools like Bachpan Play School feature a collaborative and innovative approach to education through their “SPROUT” curriculum, which offers parents innovative tools for providing their children with meaningful learning experiences. It is by exerting the power of involvement that parents can see their children grow as academic enthusiasts and assured learners who are ready at all times to exercise their potential to the fullest.

</excerpt>

Japan is launching a new initiative to encourage single women to relocate from Tokyo to rural areas to help address the declining female population in the countryside. This plan is part of a broader effort to counteract the trend of young women moving to Tokyo for education or work and not returning to rural regions, which has led to a significant gender imbalance in these areas.

According to a report, the Japanese government will cover travel expenses for women attending matchmaking events in rural areas and offer additional financial incentives for those who choose to move. Specifically, the initiative will expand an existing subsidy program, providing up to $7,000 to women relocating from Tokyo’s 23 wards to rural areas.

The 2020 national census revealed that outside Tokyo, there are about 9.1 million single women aged 15 to 49, compared to 11.1 million single men, indicating a significant gender gap that is particularly pronounced in rural areas. This disparity is partly due to more women than men moving to Tokyo and staying for extended periods due to educational or professional opportunities.

Japan faces a critical demographic challenge with a declining birth rate, which hit a historic low last year with only 727,277 births recorded. The country’s fertility rate stands at 1.20, far below the replacement level of 2.1 needed to maintain a stable population. This decline poses significant concerns for Japan’s future workforce and economy.

To combat this issue, the government has implemented various initiatives, including financial incentives for couples to have children, expanded childcare facilities, and even a state-backed dating app that uses AI to match singles. These measures are part of a broader strategy to promote marriage and family growth to counteract the demographic decline.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has emphasized the urgency of addressing the falling birth rates, calling it the “gravest crisis our country faces.” While some experts argue against fearing a societal collapse, Japan is actively seeking solutions to promote marriage and increase birth rates to ensure a sustainable future.

</excerpt>

A U.S. government report has concluded, for the first time, that there is a link between fluoride in drinking water at levels twice the recommended limit and lower IQ in children. The National Toxicology Program’s report, released Wednesday, is based on an analysis of existing research and represents a significant acknowledgement of the potential neurological risks associated with high levels of fluoride exposure.

The report, which evaluated studies conducted in countries such as Canada, China, India, Iran, Pakistan, and Mexico, found that drinking water containing more than 1.5 milligrams of fluoride per litre is consistently associated with lower IQs in children. While the report did not quantify the exact impact on IQ, some studies suggested that children exposed to higher fluoride levels had IQs that were 2 to 5 points lower.

Fluoride is a mineral that strengthens teeth and reduces cavities by replacing minerals lost during normal wear and tear, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). For decades, the addition of low levels of fluoride to drinking water has been considered a major public health achievement, helping to prevent tooth decay across the population.

However, concerns have been growing over the potential impact of fluoride on brain development, particularly in fetuses and young children. Research has increasingly suggested that higher levels of fluoride exposure may affect neurochemistry and cell function in brain regions responsible for learning, memory, and behaviour. This has led some experts, like Ashley Malin, a University of Florida researcher, to suggest that pregnant women might want to reduce their fluoride intake from sources like water and certain teas.

The report has sparked renewed debate over the appropriate levels of fluoride in drinking water. Currently, federal health officials recommend a fluoridation level of 0.7 milligrams per litre, with the World Health Organization (WHO) setting a safe limit at 1.5 milligrams per litre. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has a separate requirement that water systems should not exceed 4 milligrams of fluoride per litre to prevent skeletal fluorosis, a condition that weakens bones and causes pain.

The American Dental Association, which supports water fluoridation for its dental health benefits, has been critical of earlier drafts of the report and is still reviewing the latest findings. The report suggests that more research is needed to fully understand the impact of lower levels of fluoride on children’s development and to determine appropriate policy measures for managing fluoride exposure.

</excerpt>

Three children died and several others were hospitalised due to suspected food poisoning at a hostel run by the Aaradana Trust in Kailasa Patnam, Kotavuratla Mandal, Anakapalli district, Andhra Pradesh, on Monday, Anakapalli Collector Vijaya Krishnan reported.

The deceased include two girls and one boy. The hostel houses 86 children, and 27 of them fell ill after consuming poisoned biryani. Five critically ill children were transferred to Visakhapatnam KGH on Monday morning. The affected children, ranging from first to fifth grade, also study at a local school.

The incident unfolded after the children began vomiting following their meal. The hostel staff promptly informed the parents, who arrived to take their children home. Despite these efforts, two girls, Shadda and Bhavani from Chintapalli Mandal, and a boy, Joshua from Koyyur Mandal, passed away while being transported to Narsipatnam Area Hospital. Seven others were taken to the hospital in critical condition, with five later moved to Visakhapatnam. Sixteen children are currently receiving treatment at government hospitals in Chintapalli, Paderu, and Koyyur.

Narsipatnam RDO HV Jayaram is on-site, overseeing the situation.

YSRCP Chief and former Chief Minister Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy expressed profound sorrow and shock over the incident. He called for enhanced medical support for the affected students and immediate aid for the families of the deceased. Reddy criticized the government’s negligence, stating that the tragedy underscores significant flaws in monitoring systems. He urged the government to focus on systemic improvements and preventive measures rather than engaging in political blame and propaganda.

Upon receiving the information, DCP Himadri Kaushik arrived at the hospital. The parents of the injured students and the school staff were informed about the incident. The van driver fled the scene after the accident.

The van involved in the accident belongs to a school owned by Mayor Kulbhushan Goyal. On Wednesday afternoon, the van was taking students home when it suddenly went out of control near Sector- 25. Despite the driver’s efforts to regain control, the van collided with a divider and overturned.

The accident caused panic among the young children. The people nearby quickly responded to the screams and broke the van’s windows to rescue the children. The injured were immediately taken to Sector- 6 Civil Hospital.

Parents who arrived at the Civil Hospital alleged that the driver was talking on the phone while driving. They claimed the van became unbalanced due to high speed, leading to the accident. The driver’s negligence is believed to be the cause of the incident.

District Education Officer Satpal Kaushik stated that all the children are safe and he is in communication with parents and doctors. According to the parents, several families had arranged for a private van to transport their children to and from school for convenience.

Kaushik emphasised that efforts will be made to ensure that all vehicles transporting children follow safety protocols.

</excerpt>

In a recent interview with Faye D’Souza on her YouTube channel, Karan Johar shared that his twin children, Yash and Roohi, have begun asking questions about their biological mother. Karan mentioned, “It is a modern family. It is an unusual circumstance, so now I am also dealing with the questions about ‘whose stomach was I born in? But mumma is not mumma really, she is my grandmother.” He added, “I am going to school, to the counsellor, to ask how do we navigate the situation? And it is not easy, being a parent is never easy.”

Karan Johar welcomed his twins via surrogacy in 2017. He has previously spoken about the challenges of being a single parent and how he manages his kids with the help of his 81-year-old mother, Hiroo Johar.

A few months ago, Karan celebrated Yash and Roohi’s birthday with a Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory-themed party. He shared heartwarming pictures with his children and his mother on social media, captioning them: “Happiest birthday to the brightest sunshines (x2) of my life! My life is forever changed, for the best with you two coming into it with your goofy and adorable laughs, unadulterated sass towards ME and of course – an abundance of love to give to the world! Never change…grow up but never change!”

He also expressed gratitude to his mother, writing, “And thank you to my mom, who is forever the strength of our family…and being a mother figure to Yash & Roohi! Love you forever mom.”

</excerpt>

According to 25 of the UDHR which speaks about broad spectrum of rights, including the rights to adequate food, water, sanitation, clothing, housing, and medical care. It also covers social protection for circumstances beyond one’s control, such as disability, widowhood, unemployment, and old age. These rights are recognized as fundamental for survival in almost every country. However, these basic rights are at risk for individuals in conflict zones. The current situation between Israel and Palestine is a pertinent example. This article is not about assigning blame, but about advocating for humanity.

In regions affected by war, people face severe shortages of water and food. Access to safe water is often compromised due to damaged infrastructure, deteriorating pipelines, and dangerous water collection conditions. The lack of safe water leads to widespread illness among children, dysfunction in schools and hospitals, and the spread of disease and malnutrition, representing a gross violation of human rights on an international level.

Reports show that over 400 million children reside in conflict-affected regions, where attacks on water systems have severe consequences. These attacks force children to depend on contaminated water, elevating their disease risk. In these zones, both targeted and random attacks obliterate water infrastructure, injure workers, and interrupt power supplies vital for water systems. The danger of unsafe water can rival that of armed conflict. Children under fifteen in these areas face almost triple the likelihood of dying from water-related diseases than from violence. For children under five, the threat is even graver-they are over twenty times more likely to die from diarrheal diseases due to unsafe water and sanitation than from direct violence. Additionally, individuals in unstable regions are twice as likely to lack access to safe drinking water and basic hygiene facilities.

With the increasing number of conflicts and urban warfare worldwide, access to water has become one of the main humanitarian issues, further exacerbated by climate change. As per Gilles Carbonnier, vice-president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), in the ninth World Water Forum in Dakar said that “We need to innovate and develop new partnerships to respond”.

Now because of these rising issues on 24th May, 2018, for the first time the UN Security Council unanimously passed a resolution condemning the use of food insecurity and starvation as tactics of war. This resolution, the first of its kind, recognized the threat to the lives of tens of millions of people. It urged all parties in international or civil conflicts to leave food stocks, farms, markets, and other distribution mechanisms intact and to allow humanitarian aid workers unimpeded access to populations in dire need. The resolution also stated that “using starvation of civilians as a method of warfare may constitute a war crime.”

Throughout history, warfare has frequently employed strategies aimed at depriving enemy forces or civilians of essential resources. During the American Civil War, Union troops operated under the Lieber Code, permitting them to “deprive the hostile belligerent, whether armed or unarmed, of subsistence.” In World War II, Nazi Germany’s “Hunger Plan” posed a threat of starvation to over 20 million people in Soviet-held territories had it been fully enacted. The siege of Leningrad (St. Petersburg) from 1941 to 1944 saw hundreds of thousands succumb to starvation. These tragic events serve as poignant reminders of the immense suffering endured. As we look back, it is crucial to learn from history’s lessons and strive to avoid repeating such atrocities in the present day.

There is a saying that “all is fair in love and war.” But is it truly fair to starve innocent children in the name of war? It does not matter which country they are from or what religion they profess; what matters is their shared humanity. If we continue to kill this young generation in the name of war, we risk ending an entire generation of a community or a tribe within a few years.

Although the severe impact of war on food and water supplies has been frequently discussed on international platforms, the pressing questions of how to stop the war and ensure access to food and water in conflict areas remain unanswered. This issue is not being raised for the first time, and it demands urgent and effective solutions.

It is very painful to watch small children dying from the scarcity of water, food, and hospital facilities in conflict areas. These innocent souls are becoming victims of war politics, and this can seriously impact their mental health even if they survive the war. It’s not about your child or my child; it’s about humanity, and we must raise our voices against war.

In today’s global world, we have seen nations join hands to combat severe pandemics like COVID-19, working together to protect their citizens from deadly diseases. The same strong determination is needed to create a peaceful world and spread humanity. Terrorism is unacceptable, but to end terrorism, we cannot kill innocent souls.

We must call on international organizations, governments, and individuals to take a stand. Support humanitarian efforts, advocate for policy changes, and raise awareness. Together, we can ensure that the rights of all children, regardless of their circumstances, are protected.

</excerpt>

In recent times, there has been a worrying increase in childhood cancer cases, sparking widespread concern and prompting questions about its root causes. This concerning trend necessitates a thorough investigation into the various factors contributing to the rise in childhood cancer occurrences.

Factors Affecting it:

There is growing awareness about childhood cancers among both the public and primary care physicians. Advancements in screening methods and diagnostic technologies have transformed cancer detection, allowing for the earlier identification of tumours. This has led to the diagnosis of previously unnoticed cases, giving the impression of a rise in childhood cancer rates.

Changing lifestyles, characterized by shifts in diet, reduced physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and increased screen time, are affecting children’s health, leading to obesity and weakened immune systems. Unhealthy lifestyle choices may reduce their ability to fight cancerous growths, emphasizing the need to promote healthier habits.

Children are increasingly exposed to carcinogens in their environment, including pollutants and chemicals from industrial and agricultural activities. Such exposures increase their susceptibility to cancer, highlighting the importance of environmental awareness and regulation.

Certain viral infections can cause genetic mutations that raise the risk of cancer. Vaccinations and a strong immune system can help combat these infections. Some genetic mutations predispose children to a higher cancer risk, with most mutations being sporadic, though some hereditary syndromes can also elevate the risk. These mutations can occur even before birth due to parental lifestyle factors.

Advancements in genetic testing empower families to identify inherited cancer risks, enabling proactive surveillance. Improvements in pediatric oncology have boosted survival rates for childhood cancers, allowing more children to overcome the disease.

Socioeconomic disparities affect access to healthcare services, early detection, and treatment options for children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Addressing these challenges:

Public awareness campaigns are crucial for educating parents and caregivers about early cancer detection and promoting healthy lifestyle choices. Strong environmental regulations are essential to reduce exposure to carcinogens and their impact on childhood cancer rates.

Continued research is necessary to understand the complex interplay of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors contributing to childhood cancer. Identifying high-risk populations and implementing targeted interventions can improve outcomes for children with cancer and lessen the overall disease burden.

In conclusion, the rise in childhood cancer cases highlights the urgent need for a comprehensive approach involving early detection, prevention, equitable access to healthcare, public education, environmental protection, and ongoing research efforts. By addressing these multifaceted factors together, we can work towards reducing childhood cancer rates and ensuring the well-being of future generations.

</excerpt>

The World Food Programme (WFP) in Afghanistan has cautioned that under the Taliban administration, as many as three million children could face malnutrition this year, as per a report by Khaama Press news agency.

According to the organization, there has been a rise in the number of malnourished children seeking treatment since last year due to a decrease in foreign aid.

Khaama Press, citing Mona Sheikh, Head of Nutrition at the WFP in Afghanistan, reported in a video posted on the organization’s account on its social media platform X, “We will be able to assist about 1.6 million malnourished children.”

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) had earlier declared that in 2023, it aided 715,000 malnourished children in Afghanistan.

International organizations report that numerous families in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan struggle to provide food for their children.

Moreover, reports suggest that Afghanistan has plunged into a severe humanitarian crisis since the Taliban assumed control, worsening the already fragile situation. The absence of stability and availability of essential resources has resulted in extensive hardship, especially for vulnerable demographics such as women and children.

Furthermore, the lack of funding from international organizations has severely impeded relief operations in Afghanistan. This has placed millions of individuals in jeopardy of famine and deprived them of vital humanitarian assistance, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the nation.

According to TOLO News, despite more than 450 days passing, universities in Afghanistan remain inaccessible to girls, with no indication of reopening in the foreseeable future.

Expressing their frustration, female students emphasize the substantial setback in their academic advancement, urging the interim Taliban government to prioritize the reopening of universities this year.

Khadijah, speaking on behalf of many, emphasises, “The education of girls holds immense importance; it reflects the literacy and development of entire families. Neglecting it jeopardises the education and advancement of society as a whole,” as reported by TOLO News.

Echoing these sentiments, Narow pleads, “We implore authorities to unlock the doors of schools and universities for girls, as their education is crucial for building a strong and progressive society.”

University professors also express concerns, fearing that the ongoing closure of universities to girls will impede the country’s advancement.

</excerpt>

South Korea, a nation of about 50 million people could well see its population come down to 36.2 million by 2072. The nation is currently going through a lean patch in terms of the national fertility rate as women are choosing against giving birth. The gloomy situation is not new to the nation but the data released by South Korea’s National Statistics Office on Wednesday, suggests more trouble.

As per the data, the babies per woman in a lifetime fell to an all-time low of 0.72 whereas to maintain stability, the rate should be 2.1 children per woman. This also means that South Korean society is ageing and if the rate continues, the population is expected to be reduced by a record 30% by 2072.

This data is concerning for the South Korean government in many ways as the low population would not be able to account for the tax needed for a prosperous nation. Fewer babies also mean a decline in army personnel as well as the workforce needed for economic stability.

A 30-year-old television producer, Yejin, while cooking lunch, comes across a meme on her mobile phone, “Be careful! Don’t let yourself become extinct like us,” says the dinosaur, reading which all her friends laugh but Yejin reminds them, “It’s funny, but it’s dark because we know we could be causing our extinction.”

</excerpt>

A Chinese couple who were executed for throwing two children off a balcony of 15th floor wanted to start a new family together.

Due to the horrifying event that shocked the country, Zhang Bo and his girlfriend Ye Chengchen received stringent punishment. They are believed to have died by lethal injection on Wednesday, more than two years after China’s Supreme Court approved their death sentence, according to China Daily.

Zhang was convicted for throwing his children, out of a high-rise apartment window from the 15th floor in 2020, while Ye was convicted for forcing her boyfriend to kill the children.

Zhang had two children – a two year old girl and a one year old boy. Ye asked him to get rid of his children since she saw them as an “obstacle” in their relationship.

Zhang started an affair with Ye without telling her that he was married and had two children. He divorced his then-wife Chen Meilin in February 2020, but was forced by Ye to kill his children, according to a report in New York Post

Videos of Zhang seeming distraught at what he had just done went viral on Chinese social media. According to the site, he was reportedly observed sobbing excessively and hitting his head against the wall.

Zhang told the police that he was sleeping when the children “fell” and said he woke up to people shouting downstairs. The children’s mother said she was shocked to hear what happened with the children.

“The moment I heard my kids were actually thrown out of the 15th floor by their father and the mistress, I couldn’t find any words to describe my feelings,” Chen was quoted as saying by the Post.

</excerpt>

Depression is a mental health disorder and can affect any individual at any age. Depression in children is more common than most parents realize. In the competitive world, children and teenagers find themselves in a rat-race that seems impossible to win. The delicate mind of a child often feels the burden of the society.

Apart from that, factors such as bullying, peer pressure, identity crisis, assault social media, exposure to violence etc. also contributes to the increasing risk of depression among children. Parents often don’t realize that the changed behavior in their ward might not always be a tantrum but an early sign of depression.

Here are a few initial signs of depression in children that must not be overlooked:

Changes in Behavior: One of the primary signs of depression in children is noticeable changes in behavior. This may include a sudden withdrawal from activities they once enjoyed, reluctance to engage with friends or family, or a decline in academic performance.

Persistent Sadness or Irritability: While occasional mood swings are a normal part of childhood, persistent sadness or irritability that interferes with daily life may indicate a deeper issue.

Changes in Sleep Patterns: Disturbances in sleep patterns can be an early sign of depression in children. Watch for significant changes in their sleep routine, such as difficulty falling asleep, frequent waking during the night, or excessive sleeping. These variations may indicate emotional distress.

Appetite Changes: Depression can impact a child’s appetite, leading to significant changes in eating habits. Pay attention to sudden weight loss or gain, as well as a disinterest in food or an increased reliance on comfort eating.

Physical Complaints without Medical Cause: Children may express their emotional distress through physical complaints such as headaches, stomachaches, or fatigue. When medical examinations rule out any underlying health issues, these symptoms may be manifestations of depression and anxiety.

Loss of Interest in Hobbies or Activities: If your child suddenly shows disinterest in sports, arts, or other previously enjoyed pursuits, it’s essential to explore the reasons behind this change.

Difficulty Concentrating: Depression can affect cognitive functioning, leading to difficulties in concentration and memory. This involves struggling to focus in school or experiencing a decline in academic performance, it may be an early indicator of depression.

Conclusion

Recognizing the early signs of depression in children is a crucial step toward providing the necessary support and intervention. If you observe persistent changes in behavior, mood, or physical well-being in your child, consider seeking professional guidance. Open communication, empathy, and a supportive environment are essential elements in helping children navigate and overcome depression. By addressing these early signs promptly, parents can play a pivotal role in fostering their child’s mental well-being and ensuring a brighter future.

</excerpt>

Pure Earth survey suggest solutions to save 5.5 million cardiovascular deaths and the loss of 765 million IQ points caused by lead exposure

The Lancet Planetary Health published an article on September 12th 2023 led by World Bank researchers stating that the global cardiovascular disease mortality from lead exposure of 5·5 million deaths in 2019 is six times higher than the earlier estimate (0·85 million) in GBD (Global Burden of Disease) 2019. This is close to the number of estimated global deaths from PM 2·5, ambient and household air pollution combined (6·45 million), and more than three times the number of estimated global deaths from unsafe household drinking water, sanitation, and handwashing (1·66 million). The research estimated that worldwide, children younger than 5 years, lost 765 million IQ (Intelligence Quotient) points from lead exposure. The new research also estimates the lead exposure impact on the economy, US$6.0 trillion is equivalent to 6·9% of 2019 global gross domestic product.

Drawn from the latest 12th September Lancet paper, in the year 2019, approximately 1 million/10 lakhs or 19% of global estimated adult deaths from cardiovascular disease associated with lead exposure, were in India. India lost up to 154 million/15.4 crore or 20% of the total estimated IQ points lost in children under the age of five. The financial cost of lead exposure to India was US$259 billion, equivalent to 9% of India’s 2019 GDP.

Pure Earth as a response to this published paper released the results of a 25-country survey testing over 5,000 products for lead, identifying sources of this pervasive lead health threat. From India, investigators collected products from marketplaces in 3 states, namely Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh. The products most commonly contaminated with lead in India are aluminum cooking pots, toys, paint, spices and kohl eyeliner.

Suggested Quotes –

Lead man of India, Dr Thuppil Venkatesh, shared his concern, saying “lead exposure not only causes economic damage, reduction in IQ and pushes the poor into deep poverty. This Lancet paper is a cautionary tale for public health officials and physicians around the world, particularly those in cardiology. The data implies that lead exposure levels should be taken into consideration while dealing with cardiovascular disease, and it may be necessary to take remedial measures to provide the best possible care to patients. This could involve eliminating or significantly reducing exposure to lead products that could cause high blood lead levels.”

Primary author of The Lancet article, Bjorn Larsen says,“Our study indicates that the damaging health effects from lead exposure are even greater than we previously thought and that they come at a very high economic cost, especially in low- and middle-income countries…consequently, improved quality of blood lead level measurements, lead exposure identification, research, policies, and practices are very urgently needed to address that burden.”

Lavanya Nambiar, Pure Earth India’s Acting Country Director says, “If the overall high number of people with elevated blood lead levels, associated IQ loss and deaths reported in this lancet paper are true, this high scale of lead impact cannot be solely attributed to previously thought, industrial sources of lead, such as battery recycling. From Pure Earth’s 25 country survey, it is evident that everyday household items, consumer products, and contaminated food items all contribute to widespread lead poisoning. To solve lead pollution and save lives we need to monitor and stop lead contamination in our cookware, toys, paints, foods, spices and other products that could cause exposure. Thankfully, practical solutions are available that involve monitoring lead prevalence through blood lead testing, analysing exposure sources, and addressing the key sources identified with targeted interventions to reduce lead exposures and developing stakeholders capacities to enact the critical policies.”

Currently, the spending on lead within development aid is very small – around $10 million. Comparing this to HIV (almost $10 billion) and malaria (over $2 billion), clearly there needs to be more investment in this area globally.

Sandeep Dahiya, Director Advocacy and Communications, Pure Earth, “This expanded understanding of lead exposure, its impacts and known solutions of lead pollution is a clarion call to action. Our preliminary cost analyses suggest that all types of lead mitigation interventions/solutions are highly beneficial and have a very good payback. Every dollar spent on spice mitigation, the benefits returned are over $20,000, which is a remarkable return on investment. Similarly, leaded paint regulation has been shown to yield returns of $1200. The donor community and governments across the world need to examine and begin investing in solutions to lead poisoning that are more aligned with the scale of its impact. Also, governments and development agencies investing in education, maternal and child health, heart disease and stroke, need to consider how damage from lead exposure may be undermining these investments.”

Annex:

Global Stats

New research conducted by the World Bank and published today in The Lancet Planetary Health indicates exposure to lead caused 5.5 million adult deaths from cardiovascular disease and the combined loss of 765 million IQ points in children under the age of five worldwide in 2019.

Up to 95% of the effects were in low and middle-income countries (LMICs)

The global financial cost of lead exposure in 2019 was US$6 trillion, equivalent to 6.9% of global GDP. In LMICs, these costs accounted for more than 10% of GDP.

Pure Earth released the results of a 25 country survey testing over 5,000 products for lead, to identify sources of this pervasive health threat.

Investigators collected products from 70 marketplaces in 25 countries, including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Colombia, Egypt, Georgia, Ghana, the Indian state of Maharashtra, the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Mexico, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, the Philippines, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Tunisia, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.

The products most commonly contaminated with lead across the countries are aluminum cooking pots, toys, paint, spices and kohl eyeliner.

Investment in proven solutions need to increase exponentially; Blood lead level surveillance and research identifying sources of lead exposure is a first step. Programs to reduce exposures can then be designed and implemented.

</excerpt>

M K Stalin, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu said that the union and state governments are working hard to execute family planning and healthcare programmes. Stalin on Sunday urged couples to restrict the number of children they may have to one or two.

Stalin was speaking at a large wedding in Chennai that the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department of Tamil Nadu had organised (HR&CE). Up to 31 couples were wed in Chennai, and 217 were wedded throughout the state.

“I have a request to the newly married couples. Stop with one or two children that you may have,” Stalin said. “Union and state governments are spending a lot on family planning and conducting awareness campaigns…This is for the benefit of the nation and families.”

In jest, the chief minister also said that he saw an advertisement that wondered why we need a child when we ourselves are children.

Stalin’s statement comes at a time when the BJP-led union government has said earlier this year that no law is needed to restrict couples from having more children as a population control measure as public awareness campaigns were working well.

The Rajya Sabha was informed in July by Minister of State for Health Bharati Pravin Pawar that the government aims to stabilise the population by 2045 through its ongoing efforts. However, some BJP leaders, including Union Minister Giriraj Singh and MP Ravi Kishan, have been calling for legislation for population control.

As a fundamental principle of social justice and the Dravidian model, Stalin pushed the spouses to name their children in Tamil and uphold equality in their families. He also praised HR&CE Minister Sekar Babu’s efforts, claiming that a few groups are attempting to exploit religion as a political tool in the state.

“Some people are unable to tolerate the various welfare measures taken by the HR&CE department. So they are trying to malign the DMK government,” Stalin said. “Whether it is a monarchy or democracy, temples are for the people. Temples are not anyone’s personal property. It was only to change that, the (HR&CE) department was created during the Justice Party rule.”

Stalin recalled the contributions made by his father and former chief minister M Karunanidhi for temples. “Following him, today Sekar Babu is running the department true to our governance of the Dravidian model,” the chief minister said. “Those who do not have any issue to do politics are using religion, and if we ask them for evidence, they have none.”
