Devendra Fadnavis to be Sworn in as Chief Minister, Sources Confirm

Devendra Fadnavis is set to be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra on December 5, sources have confirmed following a BJP core committee meeting. According to reports, Fadnavis’ name was finalized during the crucial meeting held to elect the BJP legislature party leader.

The decision came after the BJP-Shiv Sena-NCP Mahayuti alliance secured a significant victory in the recent state elections. Fadnavis, who was widely considered the frontrunner, will meet the governor to stake a claim to form the new government. The swearing-in ceremony, pending since the election results, is expected to take place soon.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani were appointed as central observers for the BJP legislature party meeting. Rupani confirmed that the legislature party leader’s name would be finalized after talks with the newly elected MLAs.

The BJP secured 132 out of 288 seats in the state, marking its best performance, while Shiv Sena won 57 and NCP secured 41 seats. With its allies, the Mahayuti coalition holds a majority of 230 seats.

On Tuesday, Fadnavis met caretaker Chief Minister Eknath Shinde at his official residence in Mumbai. While Shinde had earlier sparked speculation about his unhappiness with the formation process, he later clarified that he would not oppose the BJP’s decision to take the chief minister’s post.

National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah has declared that his son, Omar Abdullah, will be the next chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir following the party’s strong showing in the recent election results. In a media statement, Farooq Abdullah emphasized the significance of the people’s mandate, asserting, “They have proven that they don’t accept the decision that was taken on August 5 regarding the abrogation of Article 370. Omar Abdullah will be the chief minister.”

As the results unfolded, the National Conference had secured victories in seven constituencies and was ahead in 34 others, comfortably surpassing the crucial halfway mark of 46 seats in the 90-member Jammu and Kashmir Assembly. In alliance with the Congress party—currently leading in six seats—the coalition is positioned favorably. Omar Abdullah contested elections in two seats, Budgam and Ganderbal, where he won Budgam by a margin of 18,485 votes and is leading in Ganderbal by 9,766 votes after 15 rounds of counting.

After early trends indicated a leading position for the National Conference-Congress alliance, Omar Abdullah took to Twitter to mock exit polls that had predicted a hung assembly in the Union Territory. He stated, “If you pay for exit polls or waste time discussing them, you deserve all the jokes/memes/ridicule. There was a reason I called them a waste of time a few days ago.”

Ex-West Bengal CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee died at the aged of 80

Former West Bengal Chief Minister and veteran left leader Buddhadeb Bhattacharya passed away in Kolkata at the age of 80. Bhattacharya had been battling age-related ailments for a considerable period and was taken to hospitals multiple times in the recent past.

CPI(M) state secretary Mohd Salim confirmed the news of the demise of former West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

In recent years, the former Chief Minister withdrew from public life due to health issues. Buddhadeb Bhattacharya stepped down from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] politburo and central committee in 2015, and later gave up his membership in the state secretariat in 2018.

The Left leader became the Chief Minister of West Bengal in 2000, succeeding party veteran Jyoti Basu, and remained in office until 2011. His tenure was notable for agitations over land acquisition for industrial projects, led by the current Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. In 2011, Buddhadeb Bhattacharya lost the assembly election to Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC), ending the CPI(M)-led Left Front’s 34-year rule in the state.

He was last seen in public in 2019 when he unexpectedly attended a Left rally at Brigade Parade Grounds in Kolkata with oxygen support, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

Pakistan: Syed Murad Ali Shah appoints 8 New Ministers

The Chief Minister of Sindh province in Pakistan, Syed Murad Ali Shah, expanded his cabinet by appointing eight additional ministers, as reported by ARY News. Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori administered the oath to these new ministers at the Governor House.

The recently appointed ministers comprise Jam Ikramullah Khan Dharejo, Muhammad Ali Malkani, Makhdoom Mehboob Zaman, Dost Muhammad Rahimoon, Shahid Abdul Salam Tahim, Riaz Hussain Shah Shirazi, Shahina Sher Ali, and Mir Tariq Ali Talpur.

Education Minister Syed Sardar Ali Shah, CM Advisor Ahsan Mazari, Najmi Alam, Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab, along with provincial secretaries, were reportedly in attendance during the ceremony, as per ARY News.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah extended his congratulations to the recently sworn-in ministers. With the addition of eight new ministers, the Sindh cabinet now totals 20 members, following the swearing-in of 12 ministers on March 12.

Azra Fazal Pechuhu, Syed Sardar Shah, Ziaul Hassan Lanjar, Jam Khan Shoro, Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, Saeed Ghani, Ali Hassan Zardari, Sardar Bux Mahar, Zulfikar Shah, Sharjeel Inam Memon, Ahsan Mazari, and Babul are already serving as members of the Sindh cabinet.

According to Dawn, earlier last month, only one woman secured a position in Sindh’s 13-member cabinet, highlighting a significant gender imbalance in the provincial leadership.

In the initial phase, nine members of the 13-member cabinet, many of whom had previously served in Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah’s administration, were sworn in at the Governor House.

Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori presided over the oath-taking ceremony, which was attended by the chief minister and senior bureaucrats. Dawn reported that this time, only one woman was among those appointed to the provincial cabinet.

The recently sworn-in cabinet members include Sharjeel Inam Memon, Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho, Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, Saeed Ghani, Jam Khan Shoro, Ziaul Hussain Lanjar, Sardar Muhammad Bakhsh Mahar, and Ali Hassan Zardari.

Zulfiqar Ali Shah was unable to take the oath as he was reportedly in Islamabad. Nine ministers were sworn in, and three advisers were appointed, with Minister Zulfiqar Shah scheduled to take the oath later.

In addition, the chief minister appointed three advisers: Allah Dino Khan Bhayo, Ehsan ur Rehman Mazari, and Syed Najmi Alam. The portfolios for ministers and advisers were also assigned by the chief minister.

Delhi HC dismisses third plea for Kejriwal’s removal from CM post, imposes fine instead

The Delhi High Court’s dismissal of a plea filed by former Delhi Minister Sandeep Kumar seeking the removal of Arvind Kejriwal from his position as Chief Minister underscores a recurring issue. This marks the third petition with identical requests, prompting the court to levy a Rs 50,000 fine on the petitioner and admonishing them for what it perceives as an abuse of the legal system.

Justices Manmohan and Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora expressed their displeasure with the petitioner’s actions, cautioning against using the court for political purposes. Instead, they indicated that the matter would be left to the Governor’s discretion. Sandeep Kumar’s petition alleges that Kejriwal’s arrest by the Enforcement Directorate renders him unfit to fulfill his constitutional duties as Chief Minister of Delhi. The court, in a separate ruling, affirmed the legality of Kejriwal’s arrest, citing his prolonged non-compliance with summons over six months.

MP CM Mohan Yadav Lights Lamps at Ram Ghat on Hindu New Year with Over 5.5 Lakh ‘Diyas’

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, accompanied by his wife Seema Yadav, lit lamps at Ram Ghat on the Shipra River’s banks in Ujjain to celebrate the Hindu New Year, Vikram Samvat 2081.

On Tuesday, a total of 5.51 lakh lamps lit up the banks of the Shipra River, commemorating the event. Additionally, intricate designs were created using the lamps to promote voting awareness in light of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

“On the occasion of the beginning of Vikram Samvat 2081, the government organised this event and it is organised every year. Since the model code of conduct is implemented so I could go to the stage. But every year I come to the banks of the river and enjoy the event along with the public. Around 5.5 lakh diyas are lit here. I also did ‘deep daan’,” CM Yadav informed ANI. Additionally, the Chief Minister conveyed his best wishes to the citizens of the state and the nation on this occasion.

The Vikram Samvat is a solar calendar that incorporates 12 to 13 lunar months in each solar sidereal year. Typically, the Vikram Samvat calendar runs 57 years ahead of the Gregorian calendar, but from January to April, it is 56 years ahead. Across India, this calendar is celebrated under various names; for instance, in Maharashtra, it’s known as Gudi Padwa.

The Vikram Samvat calendar is attributed to the legendary King Vikramaditya of Ujjain, who is traditionally believed to have initiated it in 57 BC. However, historical records do not indicate its usage prior to the 9th century.

The New Year’s Day in the Vikram Samvat calendar commonly marks the beginning of Chaitra month in April. Additionally, Madhya Pradesh is scheduled for Lok Sabha polls in four phases, with the first phase on April 19, followed by subsequent phases on April 26, May 7, and May 13.

“Why running away?” BJP takes a jibe on Kejriwal

“Aisa koi bacha nahi jisko Arvind Kejriwal ki party ne thaga nahi’ (There is no one left who has not been cheated by Arvind Kejriwal’s party)”, said Anurag Thakur, BJP Union Minister. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today (on Saturday) takes a jibe at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over the regular ignorance of the summons from the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
The ED now for the fourth time has issued summons to the AAP chief for questioning into the alleged Delhi excise policy case and has asked him to appear before the central probe agency on January 18.

Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports of India, Anurag Thakur questioned Delhi’s Chief Minister and asked “Why is he running away from the investigation?” He said, “From 2011-14, Arvind Kejriwal used to talk big. At that time he used to talk about raising his voice against the corruption of Congress, today he is involved in corruption. Now the question arises that why is he running away from investigation?…”

The Delhi BJP Chief said to ANI, “Every time he (Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal) tries to skip the investigation. The minutes he got the ED summon he said that he will on his Goa trip. You are running away from an investigation because you are scared of answering the questions. You should follow all the rules. This kind of behavior of the Delhi Chief Minister is unacceptable.”

Followed by the BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawallas questioned that if the party stands honest, then why did the reputed ministers Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh not get relief from the High Court? He said, “Arvind Kejriwal has been issued the summons for the fourth time as per the media reports…Why is it that the Congress party is standing in support of the case against you and saying you are corrupt? Why is it that the Supreme Court has not given relief and bail to Manish Sisodia for months now and said a Rs 338 crore money trail has been found? Why is it that Sanjay Singh has not got relief from the high court?… It means that you have something to hide because you’re the kingpin of the liquor scam.”

However, according to the media reports, Arvind Kejriwal is likely to head to Goa from January 18-20 to oversee the poll preparations. Previously ED had issued the third summon against Kejriwal on December 22 last year.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister inaugurates five new medical colleges in state

On Friday, Vizianagaram witnessed the inauguration of five new medical government colleges by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS. Jagan Mohan Reddy. The college in Vizianagaram was inaugurated personally by the Chief Minister, and the colleges in Machilipatanam, Nandyala, Eluru, and Rajamundry were inaugurated virtually. Later, after the officials had given him an overview of the medical colleges, the Chief Minister went to see the photo exhibit at the medical college.

Earlier on Thursday, Reddy directed the Education Department officials to get ready to distribute a second installment of tabs to students and teachers in Class 8 this year, an official statement said.
At a review meeting held at the Camp Office here on Thursday, CM Reddy told them to arrange training classes on the use of tabs by the digital assistants working in the village and ward secretariat.

Additionally, he requested that all schools that have finished the first phase of Nadu-Nedu by December fix IFPs and smart TVs in the classrooms. Similar to that, he recommended that a full broadband facility be made available to all schools that have IFPs and smart TVs in the classrooms by December and that a full syllabus be made available to the students. He was told that 6,515 schools now have smart TVs installed, and that 4,804 schools now have 30,213 IFPs set up. The statements also stated that IFP use training was provided for teachers.

Chhattisgarh CM to transfer Rs 20.18 crore to beneficiaries of Godhan Nyaya Yojana

An official announcement from the Chief Minister’s office (CMO) states that Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel would present a total of Rs 20.18 crore to the Godhan Nyaya Yojana recipients today during a ceremony held at his residential office in Raipur. This includes Rs 4.91 crore to rural cattle herders, Rs 8.98 crore to Gauthan committees and Rs 6.29 crore to self-help groups in lieu of cow dung purchased in Gauthans from May 16 to May 31, according to the statement. “Under the Godhan Nyay Yojana, Rs 518 crore 71 lakh has been paid to cow dung vendors, Gauthan committees and women self-help groups as on May 15, 2023,” as per the official statement from the CMO.
Godhan Nyaya Yojana, one of the most popular schemes of the Chhattisgarh government, was started on 20 July 2020 from the Hareli festival. In accordance with this programme, Gauthans rural livestock herders sell cow manure for Rs 2 per kilogramme, and cow urine for Rs 4 per litre.

Char Dham attracts over 20 lakh devotees, says Uttarakhand govt

According to authorities on Sunday, the ongoing Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand has witnessed over 20 lakh devotees visiting the Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri shrines, with registrations from over 40 lakh pilgrims for the Yatra.

According to the government, a maximum of 7.13 lakh devotees have visited Baba KedarNath since the yatra started on 17 May, 2023.

Earlier, Uttarakhand Police said the number of pilgrims who went on the Char Dham Yatra had crossed 15 lakh as of 27 May.

These included 3,12,422 from Gangotri, 2,82,857 from Yamunotri, 5,37,065 from Kedarnath, 4,39,782 from Badrinath, and 8,551 from Hemkund Sahib, as per the government officials statements.

The Char Dham Yatra began on the auspicious occasion of Akshay Tritiya on 22 April.

Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah engage in poster battle for karnataka’s next CM

The race for the next chief minister of Karnataka has intensified following Congress’ resounding victory in the state assembly election.

Supporters of Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar have heightened the competition by displaying posters endorsing their respective leaders. A poster was recently erected outside Siddaramaiah’s residence in Bengaluru, proclaiming him as “the next CM of Karnataka.”

Posters were also put up on Sunday outside the house of D K Shivakumar’s house in Bangalore wishing him an advanced birthday which is on May 15 with writing in them “Birthday greetings to the new Chief Minister of Karnataka”.

Siddaramaiah informed on Saturday that Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting would be held on Sunday where the Congress Legislative Party is expected to pass a resolution leaving it to the party high command to decide the chief minister for Karnataka.

DK Shivakumar defeated JDS candidate B Nagaraju in the Kanakapura constituency by 1,22,392 votes while Siddaramaiah won the Varuna assembly seat defeating Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) V Somanna.According to the Election Commission of India, Congress won 135 seats pushing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) out of power in the only southern state it ruled, and boosting its own prospects for the electoral battles ahead. BJP managed to win 66 seats.Janata Dal-Secular (JDS) bagged 19 seats. Independents have won two seats while Kalyana Rajya Pragathi Paksha and Sarvodaya Karnataka Paksha won one seat each.

‘We will work to ensure drug-free India by 2047’ says Himanta Biswa Sarma

According to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, between May 2021 and March of this year, the Assam Police arrested 8,724 people and confiscated drugs worth Rs 1,329 crore.

Data from the Assam government shows that during this time 5,246 cases have been reported and 759 vehicles have been seized by the police. Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, “Under the leadership of the Prime Minister and the Home Minister’s guidance, we will endeavour to create a drug-free India by 2047.

The state government data shows that from 2016 to February this year, 295.07 kilograms of heroin, 111789.7 kilograms of Ganja, 463.16 kilograms of opium, 9,46,412 cough syrup bottles, 19,812 kilograms of Yaba tablets, 3316 kg of poppy straw, 44.89 kg of morphine 14.04 kilograms of Methamphetamine, 1151 numbers of Fortwine Zocin injections, 1.64 kilograms of Cocaine, 8.37 kilograms of Crystalline seized in the state.

‘Uttar Pradesh is no longer known for crimes’: Yogi Adityanath

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took the oath for his second consecutive term on March 25, 2022. Addressing a press conference, CM Yogi said, “UP is not known for crimes anymore; it is known for its festivals.” The state will touch new heights of development, and words like ‘Jungle Raj’, and ‘Gunda Raj’ will remain in the past”.

Emphasizing the government’s achievements in the past six years, CM Yogi said, “UP has the best infrastructure.” Purvanchal Expressway, Bundelkhand Motorway, and Ganga Expressway (work should be completed before 2025 Kumbh). “The highest number of metros in the country are in UP, running in five districts, and soon Agra will also have metro connectivity,” he added.

Focusing on the total number of airports in the state, Yogi Quoted, “When our government came in 2017, only two airports were functional, whereas the airports in Gorakhpur and Agra were partial. Today, a total of 9 airports are functional while nine are in process.” “Work is in progress at Ayodhya and Jewar International Airport and by the end of 2023 it will also become functional,” he said.

Chief Minister Yogi also underlined the world’s longest river cruise and said, “UP got the gift of the world’s longest river cruise. Eastern Uttar Pradesh always regrets that there was no medium to connect with water, but today we have connected the eastern port from Banaras to Haldia.”

Speaking about the Global Investors Summit (UPGIS 2023), Adityanath said, “We started the Investor Summit with Rs 80 thousand crore groundbreaking projects, and so far more than Rs 5 lakh crore private development projects have been inaugurated.”
“An investment of Rs 35 lakh crore was received in the Global Investor Summit,” he added.

Yogi also emphasized on the number of toilets made under the Swachh Bharat Mission and said, “Under the Swachh Bharat Mission, earlier only 2.5 lakh toilets were built in UP, but from 2017, 2 crore 61 lakh toilets were constructed.”

Further talking on pension and employment, CM quoted, “We have doubled the per capita income, and almost 31 lakh women are getting the benefit of pension.”

“The unemployment rate which was 18 per cent in 2016 has come down to 3 to 4 per cent today,” he added. “Today, Uttar Pradesh is the number one state in the country in ethanol production. Medical colleges have been built, and some are being built, in all the districts of the state. The dream of One District One Medical College is coming true today. We manufacture the largest number of smartphones in the country,” said Yogi Adityanath at the press conference.

Tali constituency of Arunachal Pradesh gets road connectivity for the first time

Tali (Arunachal Pradesh) [India], February 28 : For the first time since India’s Independence, the last unconnected administrative centre and the only unconnected Assembly constituency of Arunachal Pradesh – Tali – has been connected by road, after years of wait by the locals.
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu became the first Chief Minister to reach Tali in Kra Daadi district travelling by road on this Saturday. During his last visit to the area in 2017 by helicopter, Khandu had promised the people that by next visit he would be by road – a promise fulfilled on the auspicious occasion of Nyokum.

“I am proud to be part of the historic and momentous occasion, to finally witness Tali ADC headquarters get connected by road. Though established in 1957, Tali administrative headquarters never saw road connectivity. Khandu, who inspected the under-construction road from Tali to Pip Sorang, a circle headquarters of Tali ADC administrative centre early morning, assured that the 50 km PMGSY road would be completed by year-end.
“By the time you all celebrate the 46th Nyokum Yullo at Tali, Pip Sorang will be connected,” he announced.
He reprised his appeal to the people ‘not to expect or demand land compensation’. As overall development will follow road connectivity, Khandu said that if people will give land free of cost, the government is duty-bound to construct roads wherever needed.
Expressing concern over the delay in completion of the Tamen (Kamle district) to Tali road, work on which began in the late 60s, Khandu assured that this road too will be completed by his government.
He also admitted that the stretch from the Kumey bridge point on the Yangte-Tali road requires attention as the current alignment is too much tidious for driving.
He directed the concerned officials to complete the stretch at the earliest and redo the alignment whenever it is necessary.
Further, Khandu said that the stretch of road from the Joram-Koloriang highway to Yangte is unfit for regular travel and assured that the 15 km stretch will be redone immediately.
He called upon the people of the Tali area, who have migrated to other towns and cities like Ziro and Itanagar, to resettle in their own villages.
He cited the example of local MLA Jikke Tako, who had constructed his residence at Tali though being settled at Itanagar.
“This is your birthplace. Your roots grow from this area. Even if you are settled elsewhere, stay connected to your roots. Have your home and hearth at Tali,” he beckoned.
Khandu on his way from Yangte to Tali on Saturday gifted the reconstructed steel-arch bridge over the Kumey river to the people.
The bridge had given away after construction under the impact of a falling rock that had disrupted road connectivity to Tali for at least a year.
Khandu was accompanied by Home Minister Bamang Felix, Namsai legislator Chow Zignu Namchoom, Palin legislator Balo Raja and others.

Pushkar Singh Dhami requested to extend forest clearance for 10 years in four rivers of the state.

The Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change has assured them. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has described the availability of RBM in rivers as important for civil construction works. About 50,000 people and laborers get employment at the local level in the framework of basic development.

Amid speculations of JD-U leader Upendra Kushwaha joining the Bharatiya Janata Party Kushwaha put a full stop to the ongoing rift between Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and said he will not leave the party.

Bihar’s Patna, Janata Dal-United (JD-U) leader addressed a press conference at his residence and said, “Even if Nitish Kumar asks me to leave JD-U, I won’t. I have taken responsibility and will fight to save this party. He added that he is disheartened with the current situation of the party.”

Meanwhile, JDU leader Upendra Kushwaha’s reactions came after Bihar CM Nitish asked him to quit the party.

Earlier, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar asked his party colleague Kushwaha to quit the JD-U.

Moreover, Kushwaha said without his share in the “paternal property” he could not leave the party.

Taking to Twitter Kushwaha said, “Well said, Bhai Saheb….! If the younger brothers keep leaving the house like this at the advice of the elder brothers, then all elder brothers will grab the entire property of Baap-Dada (ancestors) by throwing away the younger brothers. “We are studying other cities in the area and how much weight they can take. Accordingly, we will take steps,” CM Dhami said.

Furthermore, Joshimath is a popular temple town that is a gateway to popular pilgrimage sites like Badrinath. Due to unplanned infrastructure building the sinking town is facing a crisis with massive cracks appearing in buildings and roads.

CM Shinde meets Dhananjay Munde at Mumbai hospital

Joshimath land subsidence: door-to-door survey started.

A team of experts, including officials from the administration and State Disaster Management, conducted a door-to-door survey in the areas which were affected by the land subsidence in Uttarakhand’s Joshimath.

As per earlier reports, a total of 561 establishments, in Joshimath, had reported cracks that emerged after land subsidence, with the most (153 establishments) reporting cracks in the Ravigram ward in Uttarakhand. The operations of Hotel View and Malari inn were restricted under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, till further orders, a statement added. A total of 38 families have been displaced till now.

Earlier on Friday, in the wake of the news of land subsidence in Joshimath and cracks developing in many houses in the town, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that he would hold a high-level meeting in Dehradun this evening. He further said that he would visit Joshimath on Saturday and take stock of the situation.
