</excerpt>

Ahead of the upcoming assembly eleceions in Maharashtra, Mumbai Congress on Saturday launched its chargesheet against ‘Mahayuti Paap Patra’, highlighting the state government’s failures in governing the financial capital of the country.

The Mumbai Congress Committee launched a chargesheet against the Mahayuti government, highlighting its failures in governing Mumbai.

According to the chargesheet released by the Mumbai Congress, it alleged that once celebrated as the ‘City of Dreams’ for its economic prosperity, Mumbai’s living standards have plummeted drastically due to the Yuti’s misgovernance.

“Through this chargesheet, the Congress aims to voice and document the plight of Mumbai’s citizens, underscoring their long-standing concerns that have been disregarded by the Mahayuti,” it said.

The party in its chargesheet highlighted that in July 2022, when Eknath Shinde became Chief Minister, his reign marked the downfall of Mumbai.

It alleged that innocent Mumbaikars are being crushed under the wheels of the Yuti’s leaders’ cars and within seven months, crime rates soared by a staggering 56 per cent.

It also alleged that Mumbai, once known as the safest haven for women, now witnesses three rape and six molestation cases per day.

It further pointed out that Mumbai has been experiencing historic levels of unemployment, while the ruling regime is determined to send major projects and investments to Gujarat. Mumbai, India’s financial capital, has been denied the IFSC, the Diamond Bourse, and countless other projects.

The Congress also said that the Mahayuti’s flashy hoardings claiming good governance ring hollow in the face of two years without elected BMC corporators.

“For the past two years, BMC elections have not been held, denying the citizens their right to representation and efficient administration,” it pointed out.

It also said that without checks and balances, BMC has undertaken Rs 6,000 crore road concretization projects, which have failed to provide pothole-free roads to Mumbaikars.

It also said that the apathetic attitude of the Mahayuti towards the dismal state of local trains received the wrath of the High Court too. “In 2023 alone, 2,590 people died due to the poor state of local trains, amounting to 7 deaths per day. The brutal insensitivity towards the lives of ordinary Mumbaikars was most stark when the Ghatkopar hoarding collapse claimed the lives of 17 people and left 74 injured,” the party said.

Tagreting the state government, the Congress said that since the Mahayuti came into power, basic upkeep of health infrastructure has deteriorated significantly.

“Despite being Asia’s richest Municipal Corporation, BMC-run healthcare facilities rank 19th out of Maharashtra’s 27 Municipal Corporations. BMC hospitals, once reputed for their good quality healthcare, lack basic amenities and life-saving medicines due to poor tendering processes under the Mahayuti’s tenure,” it added.

The party resolved that in the run-up to the assembly elections, the Congress will continue to be a voice for all Mumbaikars and promises to restore the city to its former glory.

It said that various frontals, including Youth Congress, Mahila Congress, and NSUI, will campaign to distribute this chargesheet to every Mumbaikar.

“We will not rest until the Mahayuti government is defeated. This chargesheet is just one of many efforts the Congress will undertake to expose the selfish and criminal Mahayuti regime,” it added.

The three defendants—Lovelesh Tiwari, Arun Maurya, and Sunny Singh—were introduced via video conference Monday evening before Chief Judicial Magistrate Prayagraj, who prolonged their judicial detention. On the evening of 15 April, this year, Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf Ahmed were murdered and killed in Prayagraj while being taken for a medical examination by persons posing as journalists.

Atiq Ahmed was charged with the 2005 murder of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Raju Pal as well as the February 2018 murder of Umesh Pal, a crucial witness in that case.
The Uttar Pradesh government informed the Supreme Court in a status report it submitted on Sunday on the Atiq Ahmed death case that police reform and modernization efforts are in progress and that handcuffing directives have been given to prevent the quick escape of seasoned offenders.

Uttar Pradesh has informed the Supreme Court that its police department has undergone a comprehensive modernization process. This includes the acquisition of medium-sized prison vans, drones, body-worn cameras, post-mortem kits, full-body protectors for women, radio equipment, security equipment, ATS-related equipment, and various vehicles. The grants were approved by Government of india and Utttar pradesh government. The Chargesheet were filed in connection with this matter.

The state government has given instructions to follow the witness protection scheme. Handcuffing instructions have also been issued to prevent the easy escape of hardened criminals, the state government informed the top court.

</excerpt>

In the Umesh Pal murder case, the police on Saturday filed the chargesheet against eight suspects. The Magistrate took the chargesheet into account. Notably, Umesh Pal was a witness in MLA Raju Pal’s murder case who was murdered in 2005. The names of Atiq Ahmed, his brother Ashraf, his son and others were the accused in Raju and Umesh Pal’s murder. During the investigation, the names of the eight accused surfaced who were arrested. The charge sheet was filed on Saturday.
Umesh Pal, a key witness to the murder of BSP leader Raju Pal and one of his two armed security escorts was shot dead in Prayagraj’s Sulem Saray area on February 24. Several rounds were fired and bombs were hurled at Umesh and his gunners.
Notably, Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf Ahmad were shot dead by men posing as press persons on the night of April 15 while being taken for a medical examination in Prayagraj. Both the gangsters collapsed on the spot after they were shot at nearly point-blank range.
Two days earlier on April 13, Atiq’s son Asad along with his aide Ghulam were also killed in an encounter with the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force in Jhansi in the Umesh Pal murder case.
Whereas Prayagraj police have issued lookout notices against slain gangster Atiq Ahmed’s wife Shaista Parveen, and his close aides, Guddu Muslim and Sabir, officials said.
According to officials, Uttar Pradesh police have also declared a bounty of Rs 50,000 in the name of Shaista Parveen.
Despite efforts, the police are not able to trace Parveen and the other two. In such a situation, officials are of the view that they may run out of the country.
This, in turn, has prompted authorities to issue lookout notices against all three of them. Around a month ago, a lookout notice was also issued against them to prevent them from leaving the country. The notice period will be for 1 year.
The lookout notice has been sent to all immigration checkpoints, and if they are caught while trying to flee out of the country, Prayagraj police will receive an alert from the agencies concerned.
On April 9, the UP police doubled the reward on Shaista Parveen, slain gangster Atiq Ahmed’s wife. She carries a Rs 50,000 reward on her. UP police on April 19 conducted raids in Uttar Pradesh’s Kaushambi in search of Shaista.
According to the police, search operations are still underway in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj and nearby localities. With the killing of Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf and also the death of Atiq’s son Azad Ahmed in an encounter with the STF on April 13, Shaista has been on the run ever since. Earlier on April 25, the Uttar Pradesh government banned Atiq’s brother-in-law Akhlaq Ahmed, a health department physician who was reportedly engaged in unethical behaviour.
At the moment, Akhlaq Ahmed is detained in Prayagraj’s Naini Jail. He was assigned to the Meerut community health centre, Bhavanpur. After Umesh Pal was killed in Prayagraj, Dr. Akhlaq Ahmed is accused of hiding Guddu Muslim and giving explosives to fugitive shooters. In accordance with the deputy chief minister’s orders, the Principal Secretary acted. Ayesha Noori, the sister of mobster Atiq Ahmed, is married to Akhlaq Ahmed.

</excerpt>

The National Investigation Agency charged 68 Popular Front of India (PFI) leaders, cadres, and members in two separate cases in Kochi (Kerala) and Chennai on Friday.

Followed by these additions, the NIA’s total number of chargesheets filed against PFI cadres this month has risen to four. The first such chargesheet was filed on 13 March in Jaipur, and the second on 16 March in Hyderabad.

The chargesheets filed on Friday in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, the two states where the PFI is most active, relate to separate criminal conspiracies hatched by the PFI to drive a wedge between people of different communities by radicalizing impressionable Muslim youth, providing them with weapons training, and raising funds to carry out acts of terror and violence with the ultimate goal of establishing Islamic rule in India by 2047.

The NIA opened the Kerala PFI case in September 2022 to investigate the criminal conspiracy hatched by the PFI and its leaders and cadres to drive a wedge between people of different communities by radicalizing impressionable Muslim youth, training them in weapon handling, and raising funds to carry out acts of terror and violence with the ultimate goal of establishing Islamic rule in India by 2047.
