Chandrayaan-3’s Vikram Lander And Pragyan Rover Successfully Landed Inside Moon’s Buried Crater, New Study Shows

In a paper appearing today in the journal Icarus, scientists from PRL and ISRO have determined that India’s Chandrayaan-3 landed within an impact crater deeply buried beneath the surface of the Moon. This impact crater is estimated to be 160 km wide and 4.4 km deep, older than the South Pole-Aitken basin, and is considered one of the oldest craters on the Moon.

The observation was supported by image interpretation provided by the Chandrayaan-3 Pragyan rover’s Navigation Cameras and the Chandrayaan-2 Orbiter’s Optical High-Resolution Camera. “The Chandrayaan-3 mission with the Vikram lander and the Pragyan rover has successfully landed in the high latitude highland region close to the south pole of the Moon, ISRO said. The landing site is around ~350 km from the South Pole-Aitken basin rim, which is an ancient and the largest impact basin in the Solar System,” ISRO stated.

“This landing site has witnessed the complex emplacement sequence of SPA basin ejecta followed by the nearby and distant impact basins and complex crater ejecta materials. We found that the SPA basin is the major contributor, which deposited nearly ~1400 m of ejecta materials, and 11 other basins deposited ~580 m of ejecta,” ISRO added.

The space agency said ejecta contributed up to 90 m from other complex craters, and secondary craters a few kilometers in diameter close to the Vikram lander contributed 0.5 m of ejecta, which are important target materials for the in-situ analysis by the Pragyan rover.

Further detailed geomorphological and topographical analysis revealed that the semi-circular structure is a heavily degraded crater structure or a buried impact crater with a diameter of ~160 km. This semi-circular structure was highly degraded due to the mantling of thick ejecta deposits from the SPA basin and followed by many other complex craters throughout the geological history of the Moon,” ISRO concluded.

Just ahead of National Space Day, commemorating the first anniversary of India’s Chandrayaan-3 mission’s successful landing on the Moon’s south pole—a significant discovery has emerged from data transmitted by the Pragyan rover. Indian scientists, led by Santosh Vadawale from the Ahmedabad-based Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) under the Department of Space, have uncovered new insights into the Moon’s geological history.

Uniform Lunar Soil Composition Unveiled

The research team revealed that the lunar regolith (the outermost layer of soil) surrounding the Chandrayaan-3 landing site has a uniform elemental composition, primarily consisting of ferroan anorthosite rock. This discovery was made using the Alpha Particular X-Ray Spectrometer (APXS), one of the key instruments on the Pragyan rover. The findings, published in the journal Nature on August 21, highlight the significance of this region, which had previously remained unexplored by humans.

Supporting the Lunar Magma Ocean Hypothesis

The PRL team’s analysis also supports the lunar magma ocean hypothesis, a widely-accepted theory that suggests the Moon was once entirely an ocean of magma. According to this theory, as the magma cooled, heavier minerals sank to form the Moon’s inner layers, while lighter minerals like plagioclase floated to the surface, forming the outer crust. The dominant presence of ferroan anorthosite in the soil near the landing site further confirms this hypothesis. Additionally, the presence of Mg-rich materials indicates that the outer crustal material has mixed with deeper layers of the Moon, providing a more complex picture of the Moon’s geological evolution.

Insights into Lunar Geology

Pragyan’s data also shed light on the geology of the area around the landing site. The terrain within a 50-meter radius is relatively smooth, with no visible craters or boulders. However, beyond this zone, the rover encountered boulders likely ejected from nearby craters and observed formations near the rims of small craters. These findings suggest that the lunar soil in this region is a mixture of materials from different depths, offering direct insight into the Moon’s evolutionary history.

Ground Truth for Future Missions

The analysis, based on 23 measurements taken at different locations within 50 meters of the landing site, showed that the lunar regolith’s uniform elemental composition makes it an excellent “ground truth” for future remote sensing missions. APXS used techniques such as X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy and Particle Induced X-ray Emission to detect and quantify various elements in the lunar soil. Over the mission period of 10 days, the instrument carried out two dozen scientific observations along the rover’s path, providing invaluable data on the Moon’s surface composition.

Revealing the Moon’s Evolutionary History

The new measurements by APXS in this previously unexplored region of the Moon indicate that the lunar soil is a mixture of different rock types, with some material excavated from deeper layers of the Moon. Chandrayaan-3 is on track for a significant milestone as it prepares for a scheduled landing on the Moon’s south polar region on Wednesday at 6:04 pm, following a 40-day journey. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has confirmed that the mission is proceeding according to plan.

The Chandrayaan-3 mission, which is a continuation of Chandrayaan-2, aims to demonstrate safe and soft-landing capabilities on the lunar surface, rover deployment, and in-situ scientific experiments. If the mission successfully achieves a lunar touchdown and deploys the robotic lunar rover, India will join the ranks of the United States, China, and the former Soviet Union as the fourth country to master soft-landing technology on the Moon.

Chandrayaan-3 comprises three key components: the Lander Module (LM), the Propulsion Module (PM), and the Rover. The Lander Module is tasked with performing a soft landing at a designated lunar site, after which it will deploy the Rover to carry out research on the lunar surface. Both the Lander and the Rover are outfitted with scientific instruments for surface experiments, while the Propulsion Module’s role is to transport the Lander Module from launch to its final lunar orbit.

The mission was launched on July 14, 2023, aboard the Launch Vehicle Mark-III (LVM-3) rocket, embarking on a 41-day journey to the Moon’s south pole at a cost of approximately Rs 600 crore. The spacecraft executed a series of orbit-raising maneuvers to gradually increase its orbit before transitioning towards the Moon. The Trans Lunar Injection (TLI) maneuver on August 1 propelled the spacecraft into lunar orbit, which it entered on August 5. Subsequent orbit reduction maneuvers were carried out on August 6, 9, 14, and 16, with the final one successfully completed on August 16.

On August 17, the Lander Module (LM), which includes the Vikram lander and the Pragyan rover, separated from the Propulsion Module. A “deboost” maneuver was then executed, placing the lander in an orbit with a Perilune of 30 kilometers and an Apolune of 100 kilometers. After a second and final deboost operation on August 20, the Lander Module was positioned in a 25 km x 134 km orbit around the Moon. The landing attempt is set for August 23 at 6:04 pm.
The Chandrayaan mission series, initiated by ISRO, began with Chandrayaan-1, which was launched in 2008 and successfully entered lunar orbit. However, Chandrayaan-2 encountered a setback during its lunar phase when its lander, Vikram, crashed into the Moon’s surface on September 7, 2019, due to issues with the braking system.

Upon landing, Chandrayaan-3 is expected to remain operational for approximately two weeks, during which it will conduct a series of experiments, including a spectrometer analysis of the lunar surface’s mineral composition. Shortly after touchdown, a side panel of the Vikram lander will unfold to create a ramp for the Pragyan rover. The rover will then descend onto the lunar surface and begin its activities, moving at a speed of 1 cm per second, while transmitting data about the lunar surface and its processes.

In addition to transporting the Lander Module, the Propulsion Module also carries the SHAPE payload—Spectro-polarimetry of Habitable Planet Earth—which will be used to study Earth from lunar orbit. ISRO: 3,143 New Space Objects Added in 2023

This escalating congestion poses risks to operational satellites, necessitating a record number of collision avoidance maneuvers (CAMs) for Indian satellites due to close approaches by other space objects. While no collisions occurred, the report underscores the importance of responsible conduct and coordination among space operators to mitigate risks. Launch schedules for certain ISRO missions were adjusted based on collision avoidance analyses to prevent potential close encounters.

Additionally, the report details the reentry of Indian satellites and rocket bodies, including a meticulously planned reentry of the Megha-Tropiques-1 satellite. Notable incidents, such as the accidental breakup of the upper stage of the PSLV-C3 rocket in 2001, are also discussed, with some debris remaining in orbit until the end of 2023. ISRO received numerous close approach alerts from USSPACECOM, with coordination efforts undertaken with international agencies in certain instances.

America’s Odysseus spacecraft makes first commercial moon landing in history

The Odysseus spacecraft from the United States successfully landed on the moon on Thursday, becoming the first American spacecraft to achieve the feat in more than 50 years. NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, LRO just captured a photograph of the lander of Chandrayaan-3, India’s third mission to the moon. It is the first spacecraft to successfully land near the lunar south pole, and this image was captured by LRO on August 27, just four days after the historic moon landing.

The official X account of NASA shared the image on the platform captioning it as “LRO spacecraft recently imaged the Chandrayaan-3 lander on the Moon’s surface.” The post further added “The ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) Chandrayaan-3 touched down on Aug. 23, 2023, about 600 kilometers from the Moon’s South Pole..”

Four days later, the LRO camera captured an oblique view (42-degree slew angle) of the lander, according to NASA. The dazzling halo surrounding the craft was caused by the rocket plume colliding with the fine-grained regolith (soil).

NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, manages LRO for the Science Mission Directorate at the agency’s headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Meanwhile, India’s Space Research Organization released a 3-dimensional ‘anaglyph’ photograph of the Chandrayaan-3 Vikram lander from the moon’s south pole on Tuesday.

“The anaglyph presented here is created using NavCam stereo images, which consist of both a left and right image captured onboard the Pragyan Rover,” the space agency said on X.

For unversed, Anaglyph is a simple three-dimensional depiction of an object or terrain created using stereo or multi-view photos.

“In this 3-channel image, the left image is positioned in the red channel, while the right image is placed in the blue and green channels (creating cyan). The difference in perspective between these two images results in the stereo effect, which gives the visual impression of three dimensions. Red and cyan glasses are recommended for viewing in 3D,” ISRO stated.

Jitendra Singh : Chandrayaan-3 proved India’s cost-effective space mission capability

According to Union Minister of State for Space Jitendra Singh, Chandrayaan-3 has demonstrated India’s capacity for missions to space at a reasonable cost.

Speaking at an interactive meet of intellectuals, prominent citizens and media persons in Indore on Saturday, “The Russian moon mission, that was unsuccessful, cost Rs 16,000 crore, and our (Chandrayaan-3) mission cost just around Rs 600 crore. Consider, Hollywood films based on moon and space Missions cost over Rs 600 crore.”
He said India’s space missions are designed in such a way that it is cost-effective. India, he said, has learned to compensate for costs through skills.
“Questions will arise, how? We made use of gravitational forces, the spacecraft made about 20 orbits of the earth, each rising in parabola, until it escaped and was captured in the Moon’s gravity and it made 70-80 revolutions of the moon before landing at the designated spot,” he said.

Chandrayaan-3, which means “Mooncraft” in Sanskrit, landed near the lunar south pole, which has yet to be explored. In 2019, an earlier Indian effort, Chandrayaan-2, failed. Over the course of two weeks, the solar-powered rover ‘Pragyaan’ will investigate the surface and send data to Earth.

Abhay K, a poet and diplomat, has written a “Moon Anthem” as India counts down to the highlight of its third lunar mission, “Chandrayaan-3,” the attempted soft landing on the south pole of the moon. The diplomat composed the national anthem in Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar, in hopes that the lunar lander would successfully touch down on the moon’s south pole. NASA selects a geology team for first crewed lunar landing mission

The American space agency NASA has selected a geology team to develop the surface science strategy for the first crewed lunar landing mission in more than 50 years, the agency announced through an official release. The decision comes amid the feverish anticipation in India surrounding its third lunar mission, Chandrayaan-3. NASA’s Artemis III mission will send people, including the first woman to set foot on the Moon, close to the lunar South Pole for advancing scientific research and opening the door for extensive lunar exploration.

“Selecting this team marks an important step in our efforts to optimize the science return of Artemis III. This team of well-respected lunar scientists has demonstrated experience with science operations, sample analysis, and operational flexibility, all of which is critical for the successful incorporation of science during Artemis III,” said Dr. Joel Kearns, deputy associate administrator for exploration in NASA’s Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington.

The Geology Team’s main task will be to organize the science activities that the Artemis III astronauts will perform while on their moonwalks, including field geology traverses, observations, and the gathering of lunar samples, imagery, and scientific measurements. During astronaut lunar operations, the team will also support the real-time documentation and preliminary evaluation of scientific data. The mission’s data will then be evaluated by team members, who will also conduct a preliminary examination and catalog the first lunar samples NASA has collected since 1972.

Citing instructions of the State government’s education ministry, the Uttar Pradesh government has said that “On August 23, at 5.27 pm, the Chandrayaan-3 moon landing process will be telecast live on the ISRO website, YouTube channel and DD National. In such a situation, arrangements should be made for live telecast by organizing special meetings in schools and educational institutions from 5.15 to 6.15 pm.”
