</excerpt>

Pacer Mohammed Siraj on Sunday revealed he was initially struggling to cope after being left out of the Indian team for the Champions Trophy at the start of this year. Siraj turned in a star performance to come back figures of 4/17 as Gujarat Titans cruised to a seven-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad in their Indian Premier League match.

Siraj on Champions Trophy Omission

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Siraj remarked, “At one time, I was not able to digest it (having not been picked for Champions Trophy) but I kept my spirits up and worked on my fitness and game.” He added, “Whatever mistakes I was making, I worked on those and I’m enjoying my bowling, “As a professional, when you are consistently with the Indian team, a doubt grows in your mind (on him being dropped) but I cheered myself up and was looking forward to the IPL.

“When you execute what you are trying to deliver, you stay at the top. When you move the ball both in and out and it works instinctively, it gives you a different feeling.” Siraj was thrilled to be able to play so well with his parents in the stands cheering him on.

“When you come to your home ground, it’s a special feeling. My family was there in the crowd and that lifted me up. I have played seven years for RCB. I have worked hard on my bowling and also on my mindset, it’s working really well for me,” Siraj said.

Gill Praises Bowlers As Siraj Leads The Way

Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill showered praise on his bowlers following their easy win over hosts Sunrisers Hyderabad. Gill called them “game-changers” in the shortest form of the game.

“Bowlers are game-changers, especially in this format. Lot of people talk about T20s, batting and hitting, but we think matches are won by bowlers and that is why there is a lot of emphasis on bowlers (in this franchise).” Gill led from the front with the bat, finishing not out on 61 off 43 balls. The captain was also happy to see talented Washington Sundar performing on GT debut.

“He (Washington) was very close (to playing) in the game against Mumbai. He was padded the whole game, but with the impact player rule, it gives you an opportunity to play someone else (if you need an extra bowler),” Gill said of Washington.

“It was all about having a good partnership, and we said once we are set, we will take it from there.” About Siraj, Gill said, “The energy he brings is tremendous. When playing against him, you want him in your team. His energy is infectious.”

Washington Sundar on His Role

On his part, Washington said the advice from his captain was to take the game deep, “Skipper kept telling me to play as deep as possible. Got off to a good start and wanted to bat as deep as possible and finish for the team.

“This has been the trend in Hyderabad in the last few years. In the second innings, the wicket gets better and easier to chase 160-170 on the board. I was well aware of it and it helped me.”

SRH skipper Pat Cummins said, “Not a traditional Hyderabad wicket, tough to get fluency in your innings. At the end there, it did not spin as much as we thought. A few (runs) short and they batted well,” he added.

Mohammad Kaif lauded Iyer’s consistency at No. 4, highlighting his ability to perform despite not being a regular in India’s T20I or Test squads.
</excerpt>

India’s victorious Champions Trophy 2025 campaign was a collective team effort, with contributions from every player throughout the tournament. While star names like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma played pivotal roles, former cricketer Mohammad Kaif highlighted an unsung hero—Shreyas Iyer, India’s top run-scorer in the tournament.

Kaif praised Shreyas Iyer, who performed under pressure even though he is not a regular member of India’s Test or T20I teams. The 30-year-old batsman plays ODIs for India only, so he has to perform right away when picked.

“I was surprised by his form. He neither plays Tests, nor is he in the T20I squad. He plays only ODIs for India. So you are not there in the team continuously. You have to straightaway play for India after playing in the Ranji Trophy for Mumbai, and in a zone where you have to attack, hit boundaries, and play your natural game,” Kaif told Star Sports.

Consistent Performances at No. 4

Shreyas Iyer scored 243 runs in five matches, more than 40 runs in all of India’s last four games. He scored important half-centuries against Pakistan and New Zealand in the group stage, demonstrating his consistency at No. 4.

His brilliant performance came after a great 2023 ODI World Cup run, during which he played 530 runs in 11 matches. India has been searching for ages for a No. 4 batsman who is consistent, but Shreyas Iyer has made his mark with match-winning performances.

“I admire him because many players came and went at the No. 4 position. We weren’t getting players for the No. 4 position. This guy came and made his place, and played impactful knocks,” Kaif said.

Overlooked for Individual Awards

Although the tournament’s second-highest run-scorer, Shreyas was given not a single ‘Man of the Match’. His match-winning performances and consistency earned him a strong chance at the ‘Player of the Tournament’ award, but New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra was given the award.

“He is this tournament’s second-highest run-getter, but he didn’t get a single Man of the Match,” Kaif observed.

Celebrating in Style

Though ignored for personal credit, Shreyas contributed significantly towards India’s success. The match was celebrated in style by him as he added his own touch to the post-match celebration of the team. Though Virat Kohli avoided an imitation of his legendary ‘Gangnam Style’ dance that had taken place during the 2013 edition, Shreyas kept audiences entertained with his own style of dancing as India celebrated along with the trophy.

With regular performances in pressure tournaments, Shreyas Iyer has become an integral part of India’s ODI team, showing that he is far from being an unsung hero.

With infrastructure investments and security challenges, was it worth the effort? Experts weigh in on the future of Pakistan cricket.
</excerpt>

Pakistan’s staging of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 was considered a momentous event, a milestone occasion for cricket in Pakistan. Both the government and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) made massive investments into the tournament, renovating stadiums, upgrading infrastructure, and putting in place impeccable security. But several problems, such as washed-out matches, Pakistan’s early elimination, and waning fan interest, overshadowed the tournament.

Experts in Pakistan still see the event as a success and think it may open the doors for more international events, but there are apprehensions about financial losses, structural problems in Pakistan cricket, and the absence of star players.

Hybrid Model and Security Challenges

Pakistan staged the Champions Trophy on a hybrid model after India declined to send its team because of security issues. Consequently, India played all its matches in Dubai, denying Pakistani fans the much-awaited India-Pakistan encounter in one of their home grounds. The agony was compounded when Pakistan exited early following defeats to New Zealand and India.

Despite this, Pakistan undertook comprehensive security measures, having about 16,000 paramilitary and police personnel in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi in place to safeguard visiting teams. Australian captain Steve Smith, South African captain Temba Bavuma, and Mitchell Santner from New Zealand pointed out that they were more comfortable in Dubai compared to Pakistan owing to tight security measures. However, Dave Musker, safety and security manager at ICC, commended the event’s security coordination and called it a success.

Financial and Infrastructure Investments

With the Champions Trophy being awarded to Pakistan, it came as a resurgence for cricket within the nation. The government and PCB invested vast amounts of funds, with PKR 12.8 billion being spent on stadium upgrades alone, such as the National Bank Stadium (Karachi), the Gaddafi Stadium (Lahore), and Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

The Gaddafi Stadium now has a seating capacity of 34,000, up from 21,000, whereas Karachi and Rawalpindi have their respective seating capacities set at 30,000 and 18,000.

The PCB initially put the cost of the event at PKR 8 billion, but security and logistical requirements saw costs rise. Hospitality and transportation costs alone, totalling $7-9 million. The PCB was expecting $70 million from the ICC, but unforeseen expenses resulted in financial pressure. It is reported that as much as an estimated $40 million was spent on renovations, while estimated revenue only totaled $10-12 million, resulting in questions regarding financial recovery.

Fan Disinterest and Low Attendance

Despite the enormous investment, the tournament witnessed poor attendance, even in Pakistan matches. The opening game against New Zealand in Karachi saw significant empty stands, which was unexpected in a cricket-loving nation. Several factors contributed to the low turnout:

High Ticket Prices: Fans found ticket prices exorbitant compared to previous tournaments.

Security Restrictions: Strict measures limited movement and affected the fan experience.

Lack of Promotion: Inadequate marketing efforts failed to generate excitement.

Pakistan’s Poor Performance: The early exit of the team disappointed local fans.

Pakistan’s loss to New Zealand in Karachi was a particularly low moment, as anticipated local support was lacking. The disappointing turnout questioned whether the tournament held public attention.

Cricketing Struggles and Lack of Star Players

Mohsin Raja, senior sports journalist from Pakistan, pointed out several reasons for the falling economic returns and viewer interest. “Our team’s poor performance upset the crowd. Some matches were washed out, and interest dwindled,” he claimed. “When your team is winning, the local crowd stays involved. But Pakistan was out of the Champions Trophy after the matches on the 19th and 23rd. The lack of home team involvement led to disinterest.”

He again stressed Pakistan’s absence of star players. “People in Pakistan are not taking interest in cricket because we don’t have a big star yet,” he said. Brushing aside Babar Azam as a superstar, he said, “Babar had a good start but couldn’t continue. Multiple reasons, including captaincy, team politics, fights with Shaheen, and internal grouping, affected him.”

Structural Issues in Pakistan Cricket

Raja identified that Pakistan’s cricketing issues arise from entrenched structural flaws. “People think that Pakistan’s national team struggles with merit and performance. But our problem starts from the bottom. There is no merit in first-class cricket, grade 2, or even the PSL,” he clarified.

He asked if Pakistan could produce new talent after winning the 2017 Champions Trophy. “Where is the new talent? Usman Khan, Nayyab Tahir—these players weren’t even considered for first-class cricket,” he said. He also condemned Pakistan’s old-style of play. “Two teams are scoring 350, and on our best days, we barely manage 240,” he said, pointing out Pakistan’s exit in the first round of three straight ICC events.

PCB’s Financial Troubles

The PCB, which was already financially troubled prior to the tournament, was further rocked by escalating costs. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi reportedly had to sell his own PKR 3.5 crore VIP ticket for the India-Pakistan game to raise money. The financial burden increased further as three games were washed out by rain, resulting in refunds of tickets and loss of revenue.

Even though the PCB was assured a hosting fee of $600,000 along with revenue from ticket sales, hospitality, and sponsorship, the washouts adversely affected earnings.

The Need for Drastic Changes

Mohsin Raja feels that Pakistan requires drastic reforms to revive its cricketing heights. “If I want to improve cricket in Pakistan, I will ban all players from the World Cups of 2023 and 2024, as well as the Champions Trophy 2025. Only then can we get serious about improvement,” he suggested.

Comparing Pakistan with India, he pointed out the disparity in talent development. India recently played a T20 series against England and won 4-1. They have a strong backup of talent, but we don’t,” he said. “Why does India produce talent like Jaiswal, whose father sold pani-puri? Why do we not have representation from lower-income backgrounds? The system is flawed.”

Was It Worth the Trouble?

With billions of rupees spent, abysmal attendance, and Pakistan’s premature exit, the Champions Trophy 2025 became a financial and sporting letdown. Though it was a milestone to host a large ICC event, public interest did not improve, and the team’s performance drowned out the positives.

In retrospect, the tournament was a risky gamble that did not work out as planned. The experience will be valuable for Pakistan if it ever hopes to host major cricket tournaments in the future without incurring financial losses.

What’s Next for Pakistan Cricket?

A source within the PCB said that the officials were highly disappointed with the performance of the team during thr Champions Trophy 2025, especially in the India match. “The board leadership accepts that there is no excuse or explanation for the team’s poor performance,” the source said.

Pakistan will visit New Zealand for a white-ball tour from March 15. Since Aaqib Javed’s interim head coach position expires on February 27, the PCB must appoint a new head coach for the tour. The appointment can be temporary, potentially choosing a person from the National High-Performance Centre since the board has not yet initiated the hiring of a permanent head coach. The PCB is anticipating completing a new coach by the upcoming ICC World Test Championship cycle in August.

While fans expected grand celebrations, no open-top bus parade or trophy ceremony is planned in India. Security concerns and logistical challenges in Mumbai have also played a role.
</excerpt>

Team India won a historic victory by beating New Zealand in the Champions Trophy 2025 final, their first ICC ODI title since 2013. This win is 12 years after India’s last victory in the tournament in 2013. The tournament witnessed great performances from Captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Mohammed Shami, and Varun Chakravarthy, among others.

Why No Bus Parade for Fans?

Despite the momentous occasion, no open-top bus parade has been planned for the Indian team’s return, disappointing many fans. Several key reasons have contributed to this decision:

Players Need Rest Before IPL 2025

With the IPL 2025 starting on March 22, players need a brief break before reporting to their respective franchises. Therefore, they are going straight to their hometowns from Dubai rather than gathering at one place for celebrations.

WPL 2025 Final Leg in Mumbai

As per news agency IANS, Mumbai, where the victory parade for the T20 World Cup 2024 was held, is busy with the last leg of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 at Brabourne Stadium. Security arrangements for both events would be challenging, rendering a parade impossible.

Players Leaving Individually

Several sources have confirmed that the majority of Indian team members will be arriving in India on Monday, March 10. But with players going straight to their homes, there is no chance of a joint celebration.

No Trophy Ceremony in India

Sources have revealed that no official trophy ceremony or celebration event has been organized in India. Players will instead get a short break before reporting to their IPL teams.

Even though there would not be a public reception in India, Team India received a warm welcome at their Dubai hotel, where staff and fans welcomed the champions. Also, Burj Khalifa celebrated the team by displaying their faces on the famous skyscraper.

After winning the game, Rohit Sharma ended all speculation regarding his ODI retirement. “I am not going to retire from this (ODI) format. Going forward please don’t spread rumours,” Rohit said to the press after the final. His declaration was made mere moments after Ravindra Jadeja had stated his retirement from T20Is.

In Wankhede Stadium’s 50th anniversary celebration earlier this year, Rohit Sharma had vowed to take the Champions Trophy back to the historic stadium.

“We will try our best… I’m sure that the wishes of 140 crore Indians will be behind us when we land in Dubai for the Champions Trophy. We will try to do well and bring the Champions Trophy to the Wankhede Stadium,” had said Rohit.

But the official word hasn’t come so far on conducting a celebration programme at Wankhede in the wake of India’s success.

India’s Dominance in ICC Events

With this win, India has again proved its supremacy in international cricket, putting an end to more than a decade-long ODI title drought. Although fans might miss a victory parade, the team now turns its attention to IPL 2025, where the Champions Trophy stars will soon be in action.

</excerpt>

A celebratory rally in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, marking India’s ICC Champions Trophy victory over New Zealand, quickly turned chaotic when stones were reportedly hurled at a group of young cricket fans, triggering violent clashes and arson, according to PTI.

Unfolding Chaos at the Rally

A group of enthusiastic cricket supporters had organized a rally to commemorate India’s triumphant win in the Champions Trophy 2025 final. As the group neared the Jama Masjid, unidentified assailants began pelting them with stones. The sudden attack forced the rally participants to abandon their motorcycles and flee for safety. In the ensuing chaos, several vehicles in the area were set ablaze, escalating tensions further.

Police Respond to the Disturbance

Deputy Inspector General of Police Nimish Agarwal explained that the incident occurred when an altercation broke out during the rally. “There was an exchange of stones between two groups,” he told PTI. In addition to the stone-throwing, there were multiple instances of arson and property damage.

India Clinches a Historic Champions Trophy Victory

The backdrop to these incidents was India’s impressive performance in the ICC Champions Trophy final held in Dubai. India secured their third Champions Trophy title with a commanding four-wicket victory over New Zealand. Led by skipper Rohit Sharma, who scored an unbeaten 76 off 83 balls, India’s spinners held New Zealand to 251 for seven in their 50 overs, setting the stage for a memorable chase. Shreyas Iyer also contributed significantly with a well-crafted 48 off 62 balls as India completed the chase with six balls to spare.

As fans across India erupted in celebrations, dancing in the streets and proudly waving the national tricolour, the rally in Mhow was intended to be a joyous occasion that unfortunately descended into turmoil.

Authorities continue to investigate the incident in Mhow, promising that those responsible for the violence and arson will face strict penalties. Meanwhile, the nation celebrates another milestone in its cricketing legacy, even as local tensions underscore the unpredictable nature of public gatherings.

Experts Weigh In

<excerpt>Pakistan hosted the Champions Trophy 2025 despite challenges like rain-hit matches, financial losses, and India’s absence. Experts believe the event was a success but debate its long-term benefits.
</excerpt>

Pakistan hosted the Champions Trophy 2025 on a hybrid model after India declined to send its team because of security issues. India, therefore, played all its matches in Dubai, while Pakistan hosted games in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi.

In spite of setbacks such as match washouts, security issues, and Pakistan’s early elimination from the tournament, experts in the country are of the opinion that the event was a success and may open the door to more international cricket in the country.

Challenges: Rain, Early Exit, and Financial Concerns

Three games in Pakistan were abandoned because of rain, which impacted general fan interest. The tournament lost its steam further when Pakistan was knocked out early following losses against New Zealand and India.

While PCB concentrated on providing a world-class event, there are still financial worries. The board invested 1.8 billion Pakistani rupees on the renovation of stadiums but lost money as a result of washouts of matches, for which tickets needed to be returned.

Security Measures: A Key Success

Despite security fears, Pakistan managed to provide a safe environment for players and officials. The nation sent 16,000 police and paramilitary troops to host cities.

Security officials praised the arrangements. “It is what it is for Pakistan cricket. Given that we even had another terror incident in Bannu a day before the semifinal (between South Africa and New Zealand) in Lahore, we should be happy that we managed to host such a big event without any incident,” said cricket analyst Omair Alavi.

Dave Musker, safety and security manager of ICC, also appreciated Pakistan’s efforts, saying, “I would say that Pakistan did well to host the event without a single incident. All eyes were on our security personnel in the tournament and they delivered.”

Mixed Reactions of Players on Security

While some players appreciated the security arrangements for Champions Trophy 2025, others pointed out the stark difference between the security arrangements in Pakistan and Dubai.

Australia’s Steve Smith, South Africa’s Temba Bavuma, and New Zealand’s Mitchell Santner said they felt much more at ease in Dubai than under the strict security in Pakistan.

Nevertheless, security officials confirmed that they prioritized safety at the expense of convenience. “We attempted to meet the requirements of teams and players and provide them with a more comfortable ambiance. But we had a job to do and we had to take that into consideration as well,” Senior Superintendent of Police Imran Jamil told The Express Tribune, who commanded security arrangements in Karachi.

Financial Setback and Debate Over Stadium Revamps

The PCB had looked for major financial gains from staging the tournament but was hit with setbacks by rain-damaged matches. The board is paid a guaranteed hosting fee of $600,000, plus ticket sales, hospitality box, and sponsorship revenues. But rain-triggered washouts led to the PCB refunding ticket sales, hurting its receipts.

Experts wondered if the PCB’s 1.8 billion Pakistani rupee spend on stadium upgrades was worth it, particularly considering Pakistan’s lackluster performance in the tournament.

“More emphasis was given to the stadiums than to cricket,” opined former Test seamer Seikander Bakht. He felt that rather than developing the existing facilities, the money could have been utilized to construct a new stadium in Islamabad or develop smaller centers like Faisalabad, Peshawar, Hyderabad, and Sialkot.

Veteran cricketer Iqbal Qasim opined that Pakistan was keen on displaying its capability to stage international events, but the non-availability of proper drainage facilities at Gaddafi Stadium, leading to the abandonment of the Australia-Afghanistan match, did not go down well.

Pakistan’s Cricket Future: What Next?

Despite drawbacks, the PCB finds silver linings in staging the Champions Trophy. “It was a bummer that our team didn’t do well and that understandably hit the interest level in later matches. But otherwise things went smoothly,” a PCB official explained.

Ex-Pakistan cricket administrator Arif Ali Khan Abbasi feels the event could be used by the PCB to get more international competitions in the country. But he noted that financial gains would be restricted unless India compromises to play in Pakistan.

“I think until we can’t convince the Indian team to play in Pakistan in even ICC or Asian-level events and end this hybrid scheduling, we will really not gain financially… which means (not) having funds to improve our domestic infrastructure,” he stated.

Conclusion: Success or a Missed Opportunity?

Pakistan’s staging of the Champions Trophy 2025 demonstrated that it could handle international cricket tournaments despite difficulties. Security arrangements were commended, but financial issues and the poor performance of the team questioned the long-term effects of the event.

The tournament can potentially pave the way for future international cricket in Pakistan, but to best utilize hosting rights, the PCB will need to fix critical issues, such as match timetables, weather preparedness, and local cricket development.

Shubman Gill’s Reply Sparks Speculation

<excerpt>Speculation surrounds Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s ODI future, but Shubman Gill says the Indian dressing room is not discussing retirement. With the Champions Trophy final approaching, Gill expresses confidence in India’s batting lineup and their ability to handle pressure.
</excerpt>

While there was speculation on ODI cricket future of Indian cricket legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli following the Champions Trophy, vice-captain Shubman Gill made clear that there was no talk of their retirement in the dressing room of the team.

Addressing the pre-match press conference before India’s Champions Trophy final against New Zealand on Sunday, Gill ended speculation regarding the two contemporary greats retiring from ODI cricket.

“There is no talk about retirement in the dressing room, now,” Shubman Gill asserted.

Best Batting Line-Up, More Freedom for Top Order

Gill, India’s most reliable ODI batsman over the past two years, is honored to be a part of what he describes as the best batting unit. He attributed the depth of the team’s batting to enabling the top order to play with more freedom.

“This is the best batting line up I am part of. Rohit is one of the best openers (in the world) and Virat, we need not tell about him. But our team has depth in batting and that allows the top order to bat with bit more freedom,” Gill clarified.

Confident Ahead of Champions Trophy Final

With India ready to face New Zealand in the high-pressure final, Gill admitted the pressure but was confident of the team’s chances of winning. He laid stress on how managing pressure would be the decisive factor.

“We are all excited for the final. Last time we could not win the 50 over World Cup but we are determined to win this time,” he stated.

Gill emphasized that one should remain calm on the grand stage and asserted that the team that copes with pressure will win the trophy.

“There will be big match pressure. But whichever team deals with pressure will win the final. We just need to take it like any other match, and good teams will do that. We have played four matches here and done well, so there is no added pressure on us.”

While India is looking to lift the Champions Trophy, all attention is still on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, but at present, any talk of their retirement is speculative.

</excerpt>

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has been a historic event for Pakistan, a milestone in the country’s cricket history. With the much-awaited final between India and New Zealand scheduled to be played tomorrow on Sunday at the Dubai International Stadium, the tournament has already made an indelible mark on Pakistan—both on and off the field.

Hosting the Champions Trophy has brought economic growth, international sporting recognition, and significant infrastructure growth to Pakistan in its three premier cricketing cities—Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi, and that may have taken decades to accomplish has been expedited by the smooth conduct of this tournament.

Since its launch in 1998, the Champions Trophy has been one of cricket’s most competitive tournaments. In its eight editions, thirteen teams have participated, with Australia and India being the most successful, having won the title twice each. Pakistan, South Africa, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and West Indies have each won the trophy once. At the same time, seven national teams have appeared in every edition, a testament to the tournament’s high level of competition.

Apart from the exhilarating cricket action, the 2025 Champions Trophy has also held great economic and diplomatic significance for Pakistan. The return of an ICC mega event to the soil of Pakistan has not only enhanced the country’s sports economy but also boosted its international reputation as a secure and competent host of international tournaments. This triumph has opened the door to further sporting events, further cementing Pakistan’s standing in the global cricket world.

As the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 nears its grand finale, with India and New Zealand set to clash in the ultimate showdown at the Dubai International Stadium, it is time to assess what this tournament has truly meant for Pakistan. While it has undoubtedly been a historic milestone for the country, bringing back international cricket on a grand scale, the question remains—was it a success or a missed opportunity?

What Pakistan has gained from this Tournament?

Having a tournament of this size is the harbinger of several economic and diplomatic benefits. As cricket analysts state, “The Champions Trophy is not merely cricket. It’s a chance for Pakistan to restore its reputation as a worldwide sporting destination and improve its economy through sports tourism and foreign partnership.”

1. Financial Stability and Revenue Generation

Sponsorships and Broadcasting: Global broadcasters such as PTV Sports, Sky Sports, and Star Sports will shell out millions of dollars for broadcast rights.

Ticket Sales and Merchandising: Stadiums at full capacity in Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi will bring in millions of ticket revenue. Merchandising sale (team jerseys, souvenirs) will also contribute to the economy.

Sponsorship Contracts: Local and global brands will spend big money on sponsorships, further energizing Pakistan’s sports economy.

2. Tourism and Hospitality Industry Boost

Thousands of global supporters, reporters, and cricket boards will descend upon Pakistan, generating additional revenue in restaurants, hotels, and transport.

There will be a rise in air traffic and tour bookings that will favor Pakistan’s tourism industry.

A successful event will also facilitate subsequent tourism in other than cricket, positively affecting Pakistan’s overall economy.

3. Infrastructure Development

The tournament was required upgradation in stadium infrastructure, security, and hospitality as well as transport and security improvements. Pakistan did upgrades in roads, and hotels which helped the residents and local businesses.

4. Job Creation

The tournament provides direct jobs which includes stadium operations, security personnel, hospitality, catering, and event management. Inspite of this the chaampionship also provides additional demand in service, retail, and tourism industries which comes under indirect jobs.

Why Pakistan Was Unable to Host Any International Series for Years

Pakistan’s hosting rights for any major tournament were severely impacted by the 2009 terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore in which 6 people were killled.

There were several impact of that attack on Pakistan, which includes;

International teams refusing to tour Pakistan due to security concerns.

Shifting of 2009 Champions Trophy from Pakistan to South Africa.

The 2011 Cricket World Cup, which was originally scheduled to be co-hosted by Pakistan, was moved to India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.

Pakistan being forced to play its home series in the UAE for nearly a decade.

The absence of international cricket resulted in massive financial losses for the PCB, as home matches played in neutral venues generated significantly less revenue.

Asia Cup (2003) Controversy and Hybrid Model

Pakistan officially hosted the Asia Cup 2023, but a major diplomatic and sporting controversy emerged when India refused to play in Pakistan. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) cited security concerns, leading to a compromise known as the Hybrid Model.

Although Pakistan hosted some matches of the Asia Cup but India and other teams played their matches in Sri Lanka, effectively making it a neutral venue. This move was seen as a diplomatic setback for Pakistan, as India’s refusal to travel reinforced ongoing political tensions affecting sports. Despite this, the tournament still generated economic activity in Pakistan through the matches it hosted.

Pakistan’s History as a Host Country

While Pakistan has faced hosting challenges in recent decades, it has a strong history of successfully organizing major cricket tournaments:

1996 Cricket World Cup: Pakistan co-hosted the event with India and Sri Lanka. Notably, India played two matches in Pakistan, proving that cricket diplomacy was once possible.

2004 and 2008 Asia Cups: Pakistan successfully hosted these tournaments without security concerns.

Pakistan Super League (PSL): Since 2017, the PSL has gradually brought international cricket back to Pakistan, rebuilding confidence in the country’s ability to host global events.

The Political Angle: Jay Shah and ICC’s Stance

A key challenge for Pakistan’s hosting ambitions is India’s stance on playing in the country. Jay Shah, the ICC Chairman and also serves as the chairman of the ICC’s Finance & Commercial Affairs Committee. His influence in global cricket decisions means that India’s participation in ICC events hosted by Pakistan remains uncertain.

Despite being a crucial part of ICC decision-making, Jay Shah has never visited Pakistan. His reluctance reflects the broader diplomatic tensions between the two nations. However, if Pakistan successfully hosts the Champions Trophy 2025, it will be a major achievement despite these challenges.

Despite past challenges—such as security concerns, India’s refusal to tour, and political tensions—Pakistan has successfully regained its position as a cricketing host. If the tournament is executed smoothly, it will open the doors for future mega-events, benefiting not only cricket but also Pakistan’s sports economy as a whole.

Virat Kohli’s 84 and KL Rahul’s unbeaten 42* sealed the victory. A fan’s heartwarming hug for Rahul went viral after the match.
</excerpt>

India secured a place in the Champions Trophy 2025 final with a commanding four-wicket victory over Australia in the first semi-final on Tuesday in Dubai. Despite losing early wickets, Virat Kohli’s 84-run knock and a crucial partnership between KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya guided India to victory with 11 balls to spare.

Opting to bat first, Australia posted 264 before being bundled out. Steve Smith led the charge with a 73-run knock, but lack of substantial partnerships cost them momentum. Mohammed Shami’s disciplined bowling attack, alongside Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja, ensured that the Aussies couldn’t capitalize on their start.

Heartwarming Moment: Fan Hugs KL Rahul on the Field

As soon as Rahul hit the winning six, Ravindra Jadeja hugged him in celebration. The most memorable moment, though, was when a fan broke security and ran on to the field to hug Rahul. The wicketkeeper-batter opened his arms wide and hugged the fan warmly, an act that quickly went viral on social media. Umpires soon escorted the fan off the field.

KL Rahul on His Batting Position in ODIs

Post-match, KL Rahul discussed his place in the batting line-up of India and how he has molded himself over the course of time.

“Yeah, I do [enjoy batting at the top], I mean I won’t lie. It’s after opening the batting in Australia in Test matches and having to face that attack in Australia and you know how red-ball [cricket] is much harder. I opened the batting there and then to come here and bat low seems a bit different, but this is how I’ve played white-ball cricket in the last four-five year,” Rahul told Star Sports.

“So, I’m quite used to going up and down the order so I’m just happy getting a chance to play in the middle and whatever role is given, I think it’s really helped me understand my game a lot more and I’ve had to work on boundary hitting a lot more in the last year or so because the last ODI we played in Sri Lanka I batted at No. 6, so I knew that’s where I’ll be batting and [we] needed a left-hander in the top order,” he said.

India’s Chase: Rahul Finishes in Style

India faced early setbacks, losing two wickets quickly, but Virat Kohli’s 84-run innings steadied the ship. Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul stitched together a crucial partnership to keep India on track. Rahul remained unbeaten at 42 off 34 balls*, sealing the win in style with a massive six off Glenn Maxwell.

</excerpt>

Virat Kohli displayed remarkable composure in the Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final against Australia, scoring 84 off 98 balls to guide India to a thrilling victory. India successfully chased 265 runs at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, securing a spot in the final.

Kohli’s Calculated Approach on a Tough Pitch

The pitch in Dubai offered variable bounce and movement, making batting challenging. Kohli adapted his game accordingly, curbing his aggressive instincts and focusing on strike rotation. His innings featured only five fours and no sixes, but his partnerships with Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, and KL Rahul played a key role in India’s chase.

“Similar to Pakistan”: Kohli on His Knock

Speaking after the match, Kohli compared his innings to his century against Pakistan, emphasizing patience and adaptability:

“It was pretty similar to the other day against Pakistan. It is about understanding the conditions and rotating the strike because partnerships on this pitch are important.”

Kohli also highlighted the importance of keeping composure under pressure:

“This game is all about pressure. If you go deep into the game, the opposition usually gives in. It is important to control your impulses.”

India’s Path to the Final

With this victory, India moves to the Champions Trophy final, where they will face the winner of the second semi-final. The final is set to take place at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on March 9, 2025.

Looking Ahead

Kohli’s performance once again underlined his ability to handle high-pressure situations. Fans eagerly await whether he can deliver another match-winning performance in the final and help India lift the Champions Trophy.

Shivalkar’s Legacy in Domestic Cricket

Shivalkar was among the best spinners of Indian domestic cricket. He had an incredible haul of 589 wickets from 124 first-class games at a remarkable average of 19.69. His accurate flight, accuracy, and capability to produce sharp turns made him a batters’ nightmare.

A key architect of Mumbai’s 15-season Ranji Trophy winning streak, Shivalkar delivered one of the tournament’s finest performances in the 1972–73 final. His 8 for 16 and 5 for 18 spell drove Bombay to a comprehensive win against Tamil Nadu.

His line and length control, his ability to extract turn even from dead pitches, and his indefatigable consistency made him one of the most respected bowlers of his generation. Even in his late forties, he kept outsmarting batters with his cunning spin.

Shivalkar, together with fellow left-arm spinner Rajinder Goel, was honored with the esteemed Col. C.K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award by the BCCI in 2017.

His last public outing was recently when the Mumbai Cricket Association celebrated the 50th anniversary of Wankhede Stadium by felicitating him.

With India fighting out a high-profile semifinal against Australia, this tribute to Shivalkar testifies to the cricketing world’s deep admiration and respect for Shivalkar’s contribution to the sport.

</excerpt>

Indian captain Rohit Sharma brushed aside the fears that his side is under added pressure against Australia in the Champions Trophy semifinal. Although India has had a poor record in ICC knockout matches against Australia since their quarterfinal victory at the 2011 World Cup, Rohit feels that both sides will have an equal “pressure to win” in the match.

Following the Winning Formula

Before the semifinal, Rohit said that it is crucial to ensure consistency and sticking to the same strategy that was successful in other matches.

“Look, they are a wonderful opposition to play against. All we had to do is what we have been thinking the last three games and we have to go about that game in a similar way. We know the opposition and how they play and things like that,” he added during the pre-match press conference.

A High-Intensity Semifinal on the Cards

Rohit anticipates a fierce contest, acknowledging that both teams will experience high-pressure moments during the game.

“We will expect some nervy times as well in the middle. But that is how the game is being played these days. And you are talking about the semifinal. Obviously, the pressure will be on both teams to win that game,” he added.

Australia’s Fighting Spirit vs India’s Determination

Even with Australia’s missing key players such as Pat Cummins, Rohit believes that they will be tough and tough to break. Nevertheless, he is sure that India has the capability to overcome the challenge.

“But I believe the more and more we concentrate on what we have to do as a team, as a player, as a batting combination, as a bowling combination, that works a lot. Australia have been such a good side for so many years. So, we will look to expect some fight back.”.

“So, I believe that it is essential for us to just keep concentrating on what we have to do, keep doing our things and keep doing those things correctly. And then the outcome will be there if we keep doing the things that we are meant to,” he signed off.

As India prepares for the highly anticipated semifinal, supporters will be praying that the team can finally end their ICC knockout jinx against Australia.

Here are the qualification scenarios.
</excerpt>

India has already secured a place in the Champions Trophy 2025 semifinals, but their opponent remains uncertain as Group B’s qualification race is still open. While South Africa and Australia currently hold the top two spots, Afghanistan revived their hopes of reaching the knockout stage with a crucial win over England. With two matches remaining in Group B, the battle for semifinal spots continues, with only England officially eliminated after back-to-back defeats.

Group B Qualification Scenarios

The last two Group B fixtures will see Afghanistan facing Australia, while South Africa takes on England.

If Australia and South Africa both win, they will secure semifinal spots.

If Australia beats Afghanistan, South Africa will qualify regardless of their result.

However, if Afghanistan defeats Australia, they will book a semifinal berth, and Australia’s qualification will depend on England’s victory and net run rate (NRR).

South Africa, with a strong NRR of +2.140, holds an advantage over Australia (+0.475).

Who Could India Face in the Semifinals?

India and New Zealand have already advanced from Group A, but their final group-stage clash will determine the top spot. The Group A topper will face the second-placed team from Group B in the semifinal.

If India finishes first, they are likely to face Australia in the semifinal.

If India finishes second, they will play against South Africa.

If India tops Group A, they will face Afghanistan.

If India loses to New Zealand, they will take on South Africa.

This milestone makes him the first player to register his country’s maiden ton in both the ICC ODI World Cup and the Champions Trophy. His knock helped Afghanistan recover after Jofra Archer’s fiery spell and set a competitive total against England.

Decisive Partnerships Drive Afghanistan’s Resurgence

Zadran opened the innings, watching his partners depart rapidly in the powerplay as Jofra Archer sent back Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Sediqullah Atal, and Rahmat Shah in a row. But the Afghan batsman proved solidity as he held the innings together with two important partnerships.

Initially, Zadran added a 103-run fourth-wicket stand with captain Hashmatullah Shahidi and steadied the innings after a nervous beginning. Then he joined hands with Azmatullah Omarzai for a rampant 81-run fifth-wicket stand and pushed Afghanistan past a gallant score towards a decent total, keeping the 300 mark in the mix.

With the historical voice of Zadran, Afghanistan has sent a very strong message towards their Champions Trophy journey, registering an astonishing game against England. His performance, as the tournament unfolds, will be the key to whether Afghanistan can advance further.

The no-result means both teams share points, keeping them ahead in Group B. With England and Afghanistan set for a virtual knockout, the upcoming matches will determine the remaining semifinalists.
</excerpt>

Rawalpindi observed a disappointment turn of event on Tuesday when constant rain caused the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 game between South Africa and Australia to be abandoned. The very first Champions Trophy match between these two cricketing powers never started, even a truncated T20 game was dismissed as the 07:32 PM local time cut-off approached.

On a batting-friendly field, the game, which was presumed to be an exciting fight between two strong batting lineups, finished without a ball thrown. Both teams split the points and currently lead Group B with three points each.

First Washout of 2025 Champions Trophy

Despicable viewers anticipating a high-stakes match, however, first washout of the competition is seen in this app. Conditions became unplayable given the constant drizzle and damp outfield, match officials canceled the contest more than three hours after its planned start. Not even the toss could happen as the weather stayed terrible all evening. Given Rawalpindi’s unpredictable weather, teams will now be looking forward in their next matches to clear skies.

The next matches will be key in deciding which teams progress to the knockout stage since the race to the semifinals is getting wild. As Group B gets ready for their defining matches, cricket enthusiasts around the world will be eagerly watching the action.

Group B Classified and Knockout Consequences

Whereas South Africa had handily beaten Afghanistan in their first match, Australia had just completed a record run chase against England before the game. Though Australia and South Africa have a tiny advantage, the washout now leaves all four teams in Group B still in contention for the semifinals.

Wednesday’s game between Afghanistan and England has since evolved into a virtual elimination. With the three last matches even more important, the losing team of the game will be the tournament’s third eliminated squad. While South Africa will play against England, Australia will meet Afghanistan in their last group-stage game.

However, a slim chance remains if India and Bangladesh defeat New Zealand.
</excerpt>

The defending champions and tournament hosts, Pakistan, are in a difficult position in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. They have lost both of their Group A matches—first against New Zealand in Karachi by 60 runs and then to India in Dubai. With no points on the table and just one match left, their semifinal hopes now depend on other teams.

How Can Pakistan Still Qualify?

Despite their poor start, Pakistan is not officially eliminated. Their only path to the semifinals involves the following:

India and Bangladesh must beat New Zealand. If New Zealand loses both matches, they will remain at two points with a poor net run rate.

Pakistan must defeat Bangladesh by a huge margin. This would ensure that all three teams—Pakistan, Bangladesh, and New Zealand—are tied at two points each.

Net run rate will decide the second semifinalist. India, having won their matches, would already qualify. Among Pakistan, Bangladesh, and New Zealand, the team with the best net run rate will advance to the semifinals.

What If New Zealand Wins Another Match?

Pakistan’s qualification chances will end if New Zealand wins either of their remaining matches against India or Bangladesh. New Zealand is set to face Bangladesh in Rawalpindi on Monday. If the Kiwis win, Pakistan will be eliminated even before their last group-stage match.

A loss could all but eliminate them from the tournament.
</excerpt>

The Champions Trophy 2025 competition does not afford any leeway for mistakes since a loss of even one group match can stall a team’s prospects. The eight participating teams are divided into two groups with four teams each, and just the first two teams from every group get an opportunity to make it to the semifinals.

Group A Standings: India and New Zealand Lead

In Group A, bitter rivals India and Pakistan are in opposite circumstances. Defending champions Pakistan lost heavily by 60 runs to New Zealand in Karachi in their opening match in the tournament. India, however, won a comfortable six-wicket victory against Bangladesh.

New Zealand is currently at the top of the team with two points and an NRR of +1.200, while India has two points but an NRR of +0.408. Bangladesh and Pakistan are yet to gain a point, while Bangladesh’s NRR stands at -0.408, higher than that of Pakistan, which is -1.200.

Pakistan’s Qualification Scenario

Pakistan is in a do-or-die situation with two remaining group-stage matches—against India on February 23 and Bangladesh on February 27.

If Pakistan loses to India, their tournament will most probably come to an end, particularly if New Zealand defeats Bangladesh on February 24.

But if Pakistan beats India, the group will be extremely competitive, with India having a must-win match against New Zealand and Pakistan relying on themselves against Bangladesh in their last match.

Bangladesh is still a dark horse, and if they do manage to win an upset match against New Zealand on February 24, then Pak may remain in contention even if they do lose against India.

Since each game has gargantuan implications, Pakistan’s battle against India in Dubai on February 23 will be one of the games that decide the fate of their Champions Trophy sojourn.

England’s Ben Duckett set a tournament record with 165 runs, while Australia’s Josh Inglis secured the chase with an unbeaten 106.

At Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, they continued to dominate their arch-enemy by chasing down a 352-run mark with 15 balls remaining.

England batted first to register a record 351/8, with Ben Duckett’s incredible 165 off 143 balls—the highest score in a single innings of the tournament.
Australia’s chase was driven by Josh Inglis, who hit a masterful unbeaten 106. His century saw Australia sail past Sri Lanka’s highest chase of 322 against India in 2017.

Record-Breaking Achievement

This pursuit was Australia’s second-highest successful ODI chase after their 359-run chase against India in 2013. It was also the second-best Pakistan chase, coming after Pakistan’s 355-run chase against South Africa this month.

England has a difficult path ahead of them, requiring them to win their remaining matches if they are to remain in the semifinal running.

Mohammed Shami’s brilliant catch went unrecognized as KL Rahul won India’s fielding medal. In a lighthearted moment, Shami joked, “Mera bhi catch achha tha yaar,” adding humor to the intense competition for India’s best fielder.
</excerpt>

Despite India’s comprehensive performance in the Champions Trophy match against Bangladesh, fielding remained a facet where the team could have improved. Several missed chances, including dropped catches and missed stumpings, permitted Bangladesh to recover from a vulnerable position.

Rohit Sharma let a simple catch of Jaker Ali slip at first slip, preventing Axar Patel from securing a possible hat-trick. Shortly after, Hardik Pandya overlooked another straightforward opportunity of Towhid Hridoy at mid-off. This proved to be expensive as Hridoy and Jaker proceeded to contribute 187 runs, aiding Bangladesh in reaching a competitive score of 229 from 35 overs.

Bright Spots in India’s Fielding

Despite the fielding lapses, some Indian players made notable contributions. Virat Kohli took a well-judged catch in the deep to dismiss Jaker Ali and another to send back Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto. KL Rahul redeemed himself by taking a sharp catch to dismiss Mushfiqur Rahim for a golden duck. Meanwhile, Mohammed Shami, who led the bowling attack with a five-wicket haul, also completed a challenging catch for India’s final wicket.

Shami’s Disappointment as Rahul Wins Fielding Medal

When the time came for the announcement of India’s fielding medal, Mohammed Shami found himself overlooked. In a lighthearted moment captured in a BCCI video, Shami joked, “Look at our fielding coach; he looks very busy. I know who’s winning it. Catch toh mera bhi achha tha yaar (Well, the catch I took was good too).”

Nominees for the Fielding Award

Fielding coach T. Dilip began announcing the nominations, first praising Virat Kohli for his reliable fielding skills.

“Coming to the nominations, I think someone who’s been really sure, that he does what he does all the time – going into his positions, grabbing every opportunity when it comes his way – none other than Virat Kohli,” he said.

KL Rahul and Shubman Gill also made it to the contenders’ list. “I think he has been very consistent behind the stumps; it’s never easy because with the new ball, diving on the left side, not only this game, he’s been really doing well, taking those catches at important junctures of time – KL Rahul.”

Dilip then added Shubman Gill’s name. “We always talk about catches, and with Shami bowling a brilliant spell, the ball went away and was heading towards his right side, Shubman Gill – fantastic effort.”

Rahul Takes Home the Fielding Medal

Dilip handed over the proceedings to India’s fielding maestro, Ravindra Jadeja, who then led the team outside the dressing room. As the big screen displayed the winner’s name, KL Rahul was announced as the recipient of the fielding medal. The entire squad burst into laughter, reminiscent of the camaraderie seen during the 2023 World Cup.

While Shami’s catch was impressive, Rahul’s overall consistency behind the stumps earned him the recognition, keeping the competition for India’s best fielder as fierce as ever.

Lalit Modi questions the future of ODI cricket, asking if the format is losing relevance.
</excerpt>

The Champions Trophy 2025 is still struggling with low attendance after Thursday’s India vs. Bangladesh match in Dubai left several stands all but deserted. This follows complaints about the lack of spectators at the Pakistan-New Zealand tournament’s opener in Karachi.

The second contest also had low attendance, much to the astonishment of announcers and followers, notwithstanding forecasts for betterment.
Summary match: India versus Bangladesh

In their Champions Trophy debut, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and elected to bat.
In the pace assault, Bangladesh chose Tanzim Hasan over the highly talked about Nahid Rana to go for a combination of three seamers and two spinners.

Playing XI’s

</excerpt>

During Pakistan’s Champions Trophy 2025 opener against New Zealand, Pakistani actor and producer Adnan Siddiqui voiced his disappointment over his performance at the National Stadium in Karachi. He turned to social media to voice his anger, pointing out the blocked view from the VIP seating area and slamming the stadium’s architecture.

Impeded View and High Ticket Price

Siddiqui revealed on social media in a video how railings and a shadow further reduced visibility and obstructed his view of the game. When the viewing experience was less than ideal, he wondered whether it was worth buying costly tickets.

“Main stadium pe hoon. Ab mujhe ye bataiye, itna mehnga ticket le, aur aankh ke samne ye ho, aur aage woh shadow, to kya nazar ayega..ghanta! Aur dusri zabardast baat batau aapko, aisa lag raha hai ke main Dubai mein baith ke yeh match dekh raha hoon,” Adnan Siddiqui remarked.

(“I am at the stadium. Now tell me, buy such an expensive ticket, and this is in front of your eyes, and that shadow ahead, what will you see..hour! And let me tell you another amazing thing: it feels like I am watching this match sitting in Dubai.”)

New Zealand Sparkles, Pakistan Let Down

While stadium problems overwhelmed talks off the field, New Zealand’s on-field output further depressed Pakistan’s morale. With excellent centuries from Will Young and Tom Latham, New Zealand reached an outstanding total of 320/5 in 50 overs.

Failing to take advantage of their home field, Pakistan bowled for 260 in 47.2 overs and fell 60 runs behind in their chase. The underwhelming show left the 29,300 people in the stadium disheartened.

Pakistan’s Outstanding Recovery at ICC Competitions

In almost 30 years, the Champions Trophy 2025 signifies the first ICC tournament held in Pakistan. President Asif Ali Zardari attended the game, joining thousands of Karachi fans to witness the historic occasion. Despite the event’s significance, concerns about Pakistan’s subpar performance and stadium infrastructure took center stage.

Comments from fans and plans

Social media discussions over Pakistan’s stadium infrastructure and the need for better designs, particularly for crucial games, were sparked by Siddiqui’s statement.
Fans also raised similar issues, therefore encouraging officials to improve the viewing experience to meet overseas levels.

More Champions Trophy games are scheduled to be hosted by Pakistan, so the spotlight will be not only on the performance of the team but also on the development of the stadium infrastructure to guarantee a more comfortable experience for fans.

With Pakistan hosting for the first time since 1996 and India playing in a neutral venue, the tournament brings excitement and high-stakes cricket action. Here’s a look at key facts about the event.
</excerpt>

The ICC Champions Trophy returns after a break of eight years when the host country and defending title holder Pakistan confront New Zealand on the first match day at the National Stadium, Karachi.

Eight teams have entered the 50-over competition from the last instance in 2017 and participated based on qualification through their records in the ODI World Cup of 2023. Sri Lanka did not qualify for the first time, and Afghanistan entered its first tournament appearance.

Here are eight main points to be aware of as the ninth edition of the Champions Trophy starts:

1. The Much-Anticipated Comeback of the Tournament

The ICC had been thinking of replacing the Champions Trophy after 2013 with the World Test Championship, which would allow for one major event per format. The concept was discarded, though, and the Champions Trophy went on in 2017.

Though left off the 2021 calendar, it was brought back in 2025 as a vital element of the worldwide cricket agenda.

2. Pakistan First Hosted an Important ICC Event in 1996

The 2025 Champions Trophy is the first ICC competition in Pakistan since the 1996 World Cup, where it co-hosted the event with India and Sri Lanka. Security issues after the 2009 attack on the Sri Lankan team had compelled the ICC to shift big events from Pakistan.

The country had initially been scheduled to host the 2009 Champions Trophy but lost it to South Africa for security reasons.

3. India’s Matches will be Played in the UAE

The ICC decided to use a hybrid approach after the BCCI notified India that it would not go to Pakistan. Consequently, all India’s games would happen in the UAE at a neutral venue. To help handle political tensions between the two countries, the ICC has introduced this hybrid format for all events until 2027.

4. The Historical Contact of Afghanistan

For the first time, Afghanistan has a place in the Champions Trophy. Their qualification arrived from a stellar campaign in the 2023 ODI World Cup, where they finished sixth in nine matches with four wins.

While Sri Lanka and the Netherlands did not qualify, this accomplishment represented a major turning point in Afghan cricket history.

5. Probably a Farewell Tournament for Kohli and Rohit.

Indian greats Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma could be playing their last ICC ODI tournament, some believe. Their form and the emergence of young talent could make this their final ODI tournament, though newly appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir stated he wanted them to play till the 2027 World Cup. If so, both players would aim for a memorable farewell.

Thrilling Cricket Activity Awaits!

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is set to be a thrilling event with a combination of historic performances, big-name players missing, and intense competition. All eyes will be on Pakistan as the cricketing world gets ready for the activity since it is about to host a major ICC tournament nearly 30 years later.

Star Player Alleges Unfair Dropping from India’s Playing XI

<excerpt>Just before India’s Champions Trophy 2025 opener, a star wicketkeeper-batter is reportedly upset over being dropped from the playing XI, raising questions about selection decisions under Gautam Gambhir.
</excerpt>

Only days ahead of their first match against Bangladesh in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, the Indian cricket team is in the midst of controversy. It is reported that a star wicketkeeper-batter is not pleased with head coach Gautam Gambhir for being left out of the playing XI. The cricketer feels that outside forces were at play, and this has led to speculation about dissension in the team.

Who is the Unhappy Wicketkeeper-Batter?

Even though the report does not identify the player, India’s limited talent pool of wicketkeeper-batters limits the options. KL Rahul has already been signed up as the tournament’s first-choice wicketkeeper. Meanwhile, another strong contender, Rishabh Pant, has just gone down with a knee injury in a training session in Dubai and is now under doubt.

But two prominent wicketkeeper-batters, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan, were left out of the team. Kishan’s absence has been a point of discussion since he missed domestic games, even though BCCI had made it clear that domestic cricket was to be given priority. Even after his record-breaking ODI double-century against Bangladesh, his exclusion indicates a change in the team’s approach. Likewise, Sanju Samson, who has become India’s go-to wicketkeeper in T20Is, was also left out.

Choice Policy of Gautam Gambhir Under The Scanner

This is Gautam Gambhir’s initial ICC tournament as India’s head coach, and his choice decisions are already in the limelight. Even though India dominated England in the recent T20I (4-1) and ODI (3-0) series, internal conflict is in danger of overshadowing their Champions Trophy campaign.

Gambhir has openly supported KL Rahul, but doubts remain regarding whether the choices have been fair and square. According to sources, some of the decisions that put some of the players out of favor may have been influenced by past performances and personal ties.

Ahead of an important event for India, the scandal provides an unnecessary diversion. Everyone will be watching the team’s performance on and off the field as the campaign gets underway against Bangladesh.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi highlighted the significance of this tournament. He stated “The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will return to Pakistan for the first time in 29 years. This tournament is more than just cricket; it is an opportunity to showcase Pakistan’s hospitality and passion.”

Historic Venue Add Cultural Significance

Pakistan’s rich history and cricket tradition are reflected in the choice of Lahore Fort as the opening event. Mohsin Naqvi highlighted the importance of fan participation and urged the community to support the event by packing stadiums. “This is your moment to fill the stadiums,” he told Pakistan’s avid cricket enthusiasts.

Tournament Format and Groups

The 2025 ICC Champions Trophy consists of two groups:

Group A: Pakistan, New Zealand, India, and Bangladesh
Group B: Australia, England, South Africa, and Afghanistan (making their Champions Trophy debut)

The two top teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals. The tournament will begins on February 19, with Pakistan taking on New Zealand in the first match.

India’s Matches to Played in UAE

India will not play in Pakistan because of political tensions. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has scheduled all Indian matches to be held in the UAE instead of Pakistan. This makes India participate without going against the government’s position on playing in Pakistan.

</excerpt>

Reflecting a 53% raise from the 2017 edition, the ICC has said that the victor of the 2025 Champions Trophy will get a $2.24 million (about ₹20.8 crore)award from a prize kitty of $6.9 million.

The second-place finisher will receive $1.12 million (₹10.4 crore), while each of the semi-finalists who do not go on will earn $560,000 (₹5.2 crore). The ICC will award $350,000 each to the teams finishing in fifth and sixth place, while those in seventh and eighth will receive $140,000. Each group stage match win is valued at over $34,000. Additionally, all eight teams are guaranteed a $125,000 participation fee.

Winning the competition by prevailing in all games could gain a team about ₹22 crore, counting prize money, registration costs, and group-stage earnings. Still, this sum is less than the IPL pay of Indian players including Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, and Venkatesh Iyer. Following the acquisition of Pant by Lucknow Super Giants for ₹27 crore, Punjab Kings paid Shreyas Iyer ₹26.75 crore, and KKR took back Venkatesh Iyer for ₹23.75 crore, Pant became the most costly player in IPL history.

The 2025 ICC Champions Trophy will be the first major world cricket event held in Pakistan since 1996. Eight teams will be split into two groups of four, and the games will span two weeks in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi. Every group’s top two teams will progress to the semifinals.

The ICC Men’s Champions Trophy will now be held every four years, while the Women’s Champion Trophy will debut in 2027 in a T20 format.

ICC Chairman Jay Shah stated, “The ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 represents a pivotal moment for cricket, reviving a tournament that highlights the pinnacle of ODI talent, where every match is critical. The substantial prize pot underscores the ICC’s ongoing commitment to investing in the sport and maintaining the global prestige of our events. Beyond the financial incentive, this tournament ignites fierce competition, captivates fans worldwide, and plays a vital role in fostering the growth and long-term sustainability of cricket for future generations.”

</excerpt>

Indian cricketers will not be allowed to bring their wives or families to Dubai for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, in line with the strict guidelines implemented by the BCCI last month following India’s 1-3 defeat to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The BCCI had introduced a 10-point directive after the series loss, and the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy will be the first tournament where these rules take effect.

As per the travel policy, players’ families are only permitted to join them for up to two weeks on tours lasting 45 days or more. Since the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, scheduled from February 19 to March 9, spans just 19 days, the restriction applies.

“If anything changes then it is different but as of now, the players are unlikely to be accompanied by their wives or partners for this tour. One of the senior players had enquired about it and he was told that the policy decision will be followed,” a senior BCCI source told PTI.

The source further stated, “Since the tour is of less than one month, families won’t be accompanying the players. But if exceptions are made, I think that individual will have to bear the full expenses as BCCI won’t be covering any cost.”

Champions Trophy 2025 schedule

The Indian team is set to depart for Dubai on February 15, where they will kick off their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign against Bangladesh on February 20. Their highly anticipated clash against arch-rivals Pakistan is scheduled for February 23, followed by their final group-stage match against New Zealand on March 2. Led by Rohit Sharma, the Indian squad will play all their matches in Dubai, while the rest of the tournament, beginning on February 19, will take place across three venues in Pakistan.

Families to Indian players during England tour

Families will be allowed to accompany the team during the five-Test tour of England in June, July, and August, with the specific two-week window for their stay to be determined later.

</excerpt>

Fresh off a 3-0 ODI series win at home against England, Team India will be entering the Champions Trophy 2025. Before clinching the series with an impressive 142-run victory in Ahmedabad on Wednesday, the Men in Blue got four-wicket wins in the first two Nagpur and Cuttack ODIs.

Before the Champions Trophy, which is scheduled to start on 19 February, the complete sweep provides Rohit Sharma and his squad a morale lift. Matches will be played in both Pakistan and Dubai during the eight-team tournament, which will be a hybrid format.

All their games in Dubai will be played starting 20 February against Bangladesh by India. Contrast with some squads, nevertheless; they have decided not to play warm-up games prior to the event.

Why India Won’t Participate in Warm-Up Matches?

Team India would miss warm-up games as their most current ODI series against England finished on 12 February as determined by a PTI report on the Claim of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) stated. The team is anticipated to reach Dubai five days before their match opener against Bangladesh—that is, on 15 February. Next in the group stage will be Pakistan on 23 February and New Zealand on 2 March.

Warm-up games for the Champions Trophy will include Pakistan Shaheens, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and New Zealand. New Zealand and South Africa are already in Pakistan for a tri-series including the host; Pakistan Shaheens have formed three different teams for their warm-up games.

2025 Champions Trophy Warm-Up Match Schedule

February 14
Pakistan Shaeens vs. Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, Afghanistan

February 16
New Zealand vs. Afghanistan – Karachi National Stadium

February 17
Pakistan Shaheens vs South Africa; Karachi National Stadium.
Pakistan Shaheens vs. Bangladesh: ICC Cricket Academy, Dubai
