As fears of cyber-espionage rise, the government is taking no chances. Are the devices watching us… or watching for someone else?
</excerpt>

India has implemented stringent CCTV surveillance regulations to protect national security and stop spying threats. All internet-connected CCTV cameras that are sold or imported into India must be tested by labs starting in April, per government regulations. This involves examining the source code, software, and hardware. India’s growing concerns about Chinese surveillance technology are reflected in the action.

Global manufacturers caution that supply chains may be disrupted by these regulations. Indian officials maintain, however, that the policy takes actual security threats into account.

New Security Rules Face Industry Resistance

Companies such as Motorola Solutions (U.S.), Xiaomi, Dahua, Hanwha (South Korea), and Hikvision (China) are required by the new regulations to submit CCTV models for government testing. Moreover, all cameras manufactured or imported after April 9 fall under this policy. However, many manufacturers find it difficult to adhere to the regulations. They point to lengthy inspections, restricted testing capabilities, and requests to share sensitive source code.

Consequently, 17 surveillance firms met with Indian officials on April 3 and asked for a postponement. Nevertheless, the government declined, citing the urgency of the security issue.

China Drives India’s Security Concerns

India has concerns about China’s surveillance technology. India discovered in 2021 that one million Chinese cameras in government buildings had security holes that allowed the cameras to transmit video data abroad. India’s mistrust was heightened by this discovery. It also explains India’s stricter regulations on foreign investment and prohibition on numerous Chinese apps.

Citing security concerns, the U.S. and other nations have also placed restrictions on Chinese surveillance equipment. Indian officials express particular concern about China and call for stringent controls on the chips and software used in CCTV equipment.

Market Impact of CCTV in India

The CCTV market in India is expanding. By 2030, it might have increased from $3.5 billion in 2024 to $7 billion. Thirty percent of the market is held by Chinese companies. CP Plus of India holds 48%. Delays have been brought on by new testing regulations, though. Only a small percentage of the 6,000 camera models that were submitted have passed certification.

Some businesses caution that this bottleneck will reduce revenue and cause projects to be put on hold. India remains steadfast in safeguarding its surveillance network against spying threats in spite of these obstacles.

India’s strict CCTV testing regulations demonstrate how important it is to protect vital infrastructure in the face of escalating tensions with China. Despite the short-term challenges for manufacturers, the rule represents a significant step toward national security and technological independence.

</excerpt>

A man has been arrested for allegedly setting his neighbor’s car on fire in the Lajpat Nagar area of South Delhi, following a parking dispute. The incident occurred late on Saturday night, November 30, 2024, and the accused was tracked down 600 kilometers away in Uttar Pradesh after an FIR was filed against him.

The main suspect, identified as Rahul Bhasin, reportedly had ongoing arguments with his neighbor, Ranjeet Chauhan, regarding parking issues. Following one such altercation, Bhasin, along with two accomplices, decided to vandalize Chauhan’s vehicle. CCTV footage captured the entire incident, showing Bhasin and his friends exiting their car and smashing the windshield of Chauhan’s vehicle around 10 PM. One of the men was seen pouring an inflammable liquid on the car’s bonnet before igniting it, after which all three fled the scene.

This was not the first instance of vandalism by Bhasin; he had previously damaged the side mirrors of Chauhan’s car during an earlier dispute, which also resulted in a police report being filed against him.

In response to the incident, the police assembled a team to locate and apprehend Bhasin and his accomplices. Utilizing technological surveillance methods, they tracked the suspects to near Amethi in Uttar Pradesh, where they were arrested. So far, a total of seven individuals have been taken into custody in connection with the case, according to police reports.

</excerpt>

A newly surfaced CCTV video from RG Kar Medical College has provided critical evidence in the ongoing investigation into the rape and murder of a trainee doctor. The footage, which has gained significant attention online, shows Sanjay Roy, the prime suspect in the case, leaving the seminar hall where the crime occurred.

The footage, dated August 9, depicts Sanjay Roy exiting the seminar hall while wearing a Bluetooth device around his neck and holding a helmet. This newly revealed video bolsters the case against Roy, aligning with other evidence collected at the scene. Police had previously recovered the Bluetooth device from the crime location.

The CCTV video also captures Roy’s movements towards the seminar hall hours before the crime, wearing casual attire and carrying a helmet, which is part of the standard issue for Kolkata Police personnel. This detail corroborates Roy’s presence at the hospital during the time of the incident, adding to the mounting evidence against him.

Why Is This Footage Crucial?

The newly released CCTV footage is pivotal for several reasons:

Confirmation of Presence: It verifies Roy’s presence at the hospital on the day of the crime, reinforcing other evidence of his involvement.

Ownership of Evidence: It shows Sanjay Roy with the Bluetooth device that was found at the crime scene, linking him more directly to the incident.

Background on Sanjay Roy

Sanjay Roy, 33, has been a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police since 2019. Known for his troubling personal history, including multiple marriages and accusations of domestic violence, Roy was a trained boxer who gained a degree of trust within the police department. Recently stationed at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, he now faces serious charges related to the rape and murder of a young doctor at the institution.

As the investigation continues, this new footage adds a significant layer to the evidence against Roy, with authorities working to piece together the full extent of the crime.

</excerpt>

A recent post on X has stirred controversy, as it purportedly reveals CCTV footage from outside a flat depicting a Swiggy Instamart delivery person allegedly stealing shoes. The video, now widely circulated, depicts the delivery agent arriving at the door with a grocery package, where he appears to survey his surroundings, including the shoes nearby. After delivering the package and seemingly checking his surroundings again, he initially walks away.

However, he then retraces his steps, carefully picks up one of the pairs of shoes, wraps it in cloth, and leaves the scene. The incident, which reportedly occurred in Gurugram, prompted a response from Swiggy’s official support handle, Swiggy Cares, urging the user to reach out via direct message for assistance. </excerpt>

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is exploring legal action against Delhi Public Works Department Minister Atishi in response to allegations that the central agency destroyed audio clips while investigating money laundering, according to sources.
The ED officials described the charges of deleting audio clips as absolutely false and malicious.

“AAP leader dated February 6, has raised false, baseless, and malicious allegations against the Directorate of Enforcement. Allegations leveled against ED regarding the deletion of CCTV footage of certain accused persons are completely false and malicious,” officials said.

“All statements of the accused persons were recorded under CCTV surveillance and the same were supplied to the accused persons as sought by them and the Ld Trial Court was also provided the same. The CCTV footage was however recorded in the video-only format as the then available CCTV system did not have the facility to record audio.”

Officials stated that no audio recordings were erased by agency investigators and that the charges were made solely to discredit the evidence against their actions.

“No audio recording has ever been deleted by ED officials. The audio facility was just not available in the earlier CCTV system of ED. ED records hundreds of statements in quasi-judicial proceedings in a professional manner. Baseless allegations are trumped up daily by APP leaders just to discredit the evidence against their misdeeds,” officials said.

According to the central investigation agency, the CCTV system at the ED office was modernized with cutting-edge technology and an enhanced storage facility in October 2023, allowing for audio recording of interrogations. “Since then, interrogation of all the accused persons has been done with audio-video recordings including that of Sanjay Singh.”

According to sources, the Directorate of Enforcement may take strong legal measures in response to Atishi, AAP Minister, making false, unsubstantiated, and malicious claims.
Earlier, addressing at a news conference held specifically to ‘expose’ the ED, Atishi said, “For the last 2 years, AAP leaders have been threatened. In the name of this so-called liquor scam, someone’s house is raided, gets summoned, and is arrested…Even after hundreds of raids in two years, ED has not been able to recover even a single rupee.”

The Delhi minister also questioned the agency’s actions throughout the investigation into the suspected liquor scam. “Cross questioning was done with government witness. The statement given and statement in court were different. When footage was given, audio footage was deleted” Atishi claimed.

“Sheezan and Tunisha broke their relationship on December 15 after which she died of a panic attack. It has also been revealed that Sheezan was the last person to meet Tunisha before she died,” the court observed.
