</excerpt>

Sreehari Sukesh (23), a native of Thrippunithura in Kerala, lost his life when two small airplanes crashed into each other while flying mid-air at a flight training exercise near Steinbach South Airport in Manitoba, Canada, on Tuesday at 8:45 am. The crash also killed his Canadian classmate, Savanna.

In his account, President of Harv’s Air Pilot Training School Adam Penner claims the accident happened during a “touch-and-go” maneuver, which is routine work of this nature done with a brief landing and immediate takeoff. Initial reports have suggested that a communication breakdown between the two aircraft could have led to the crash.

Investigation into Possible Communication Failure

Early indications suggest that either a malfunction in communication systems or visual misjudgment between the pilots led to the fatal collision. Both aircraft caught fire and crashed into a nearby field about 400 meters from the airstrip. There were no other occupants in either plane.

The Canadian Transportation Safety Board (TSB) has launched a detailed investigation to determine the cause and prevent future incidents.

Sreehari’s Aviation Dream Cut Short

Sreehari had already obtained his Private Pilot License (PPL) and was in the process of Commercial Pilot License (CPL) training. His friend, Savanna, was in her early days of private pilot training. The incident has rekindled fears over flight safety within schools of training, more so concerning communication standards and coordination in-flight.

Mourning Family Waits for Repatriation

Sreehari’s maternal uncle, Deepesh, said, “The flying school authorities have intimated the family of Sreehari’s accidental death. The incident has caused us immense grief and irreparable loss.”

He further added that the family is presently in coordination with authorities for getting Sreehari’s body to India.

“We shall approach the Chief Minister and Union Ministers for this purpose, as we require the support of all in this critical period.”

Sreehari was the son of Sukesh, a Central Bank staff member, and Deepa, who is working with USA Global. He also has a sister left behind. His untimely death has shocked the people in Thrippunithura and evoked countrywide sympathy.

The suspects allegedly trained for a militia to seize land, with explosives, assault rifles, and military gear found.
</excerpt>

The Canadian authorities have arrested four men, including current military servicemen, on charges of hatching a plot to create an anti-government militia and take land by force in Quebec. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) announced Tuesday that the suspects had stockpiled what is believed to be the largest ever arsenal of weapons and explosives in a terrorism case in Canada.

The suspects Marc-Aurele Chabot, 24, Simon Angers-Audet, 24, and Raphael Lagace, 25 are charged with commission of terrorism offence. A fourth suspect, Matthew Forbes, 33, faced a separate charge for possessing unlawful firearms, explosives, and illegal devices.

The RCMP reported that the men were involved in paramilitary-style training, such as ambush and survival skills, and had also done scouting activity around Quebec City. Although the precise motive is unknown, authorities said that the group intended to create a militia and had plans to take over land in the area.

January 2024 searches turned up an incredible yield: 83 weapons, 16 explosives, 11,000 rounds of ammunition, and other military equipment. Photos released by police include assault rifles, tactical vests, and what appears to be recruitment ammunition for use on social media.

“This is the biggest haul of weapons and explosives ever seized in a terrorist investigation in Canada,” said Jessica Davis, a retired intelligence analyst and president of Insight Threat Intelligence. She termed the seizure one of the biggest thwarted plots among NATO nations.

Though no targets have been identified, ideologically driven violent extremism like anti-government, incel, or anti-Muslim ideologies are said to now present the most common domestic terror threat in Canada.

The suspects were to appear before court on Tuesday. The allegations remain to be tried in court.

They urged Canada to condemn the violence, adopt conditional diplomacy, and assist persecuted families. Protesters also demanded Yunus resign over neglecting minority rights.
</excerpt>

Upset with Bangladesh’s top adviser Muhammad Yunus and his inability to halt recurrent violence against minorities, Bangladeshi expats in Canada have called upon their government to act.

On Saturday, some members of Bangladesh’s minority groups attended a large rally in downtown Toronto, calling on Ottawa to openly condemn targeted violence in their homeland particularly acts of rape, mob assault, and temple destruction.

“Prompt action must be taken to stop further escalation and to protect the basic rights of Hindus, Christians and Buddhists in Bangladesh,” protesters insisted.

Reason for the Protest

The protest was organized by Bangladeshi-Canadian Hindus, who further called on Canada to embrace ‘conditional diplomacy’ with Bangladesh. They suggested linking assistance, commerce, and wider global cooperation with ‘verified steps safeguarding religious minorities’.

This protest is issued as Bangladesh has been nearing its first anniversary of the resignation and exodus of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to India, where she stays. Yunus, who came to power with hopes of managing elections in advance and protecting minority rights, finds himself targeted by protestors calling for his resignation as a result of his failure to protect the vulnerable.

Among those expressing their discontent was GTA resident Sheuli Sikdar. “Earlier, I used to like him. He is a very educated man, Nobel Prize winner. I myself believed in him. But, since he is sitting there, he is not concerned at all about what is going on outside his office,” she said.

Demonstrators also hailed the prospect of Canadian MPs tabling a motion to denounce the violence when Parliament returns from recess this summer. Representatives of minorities from Bangladesh in Canada are meanwhile clamoring for meetings with top Canadian officials. They will discuss ways that can alleviate their community’s suffering, including making it easier to sponsor refugees for family members who are persecuted in Bangladesh.

Over 2,000 Attacks Documented

A protest pamphlet handed out on Saturday described a bleak picture, reporting that over 2,000 cases of everything from arson and vandalism to rape and murder have been documented in over 40 districts in Bangladesh, resulting in “more than 11 months of uninterrupted attacks, without relief in sight for victims.”

Mastermind of $30M US-Canada ‘Grandparent Scam’

<excerpt>Gareth West, arrested in Quebec, ran a $30 million scam deceiving elderly Americans into paying fake bail. Masking as a real estate mogul, he splurged on luxury. Facing extradition, West could get 40 years if convicted in the US.
</excerpt>

The Quebec Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) arrested Gareth West, who is said to be the mastermind of a colossal ‘grandparent scam’ operation that spanned the US-Canada border.

He currently has charges pending in the US for conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering, police reports to CBC reported. Here’s a better look at who he is.

Who is Gareth West?

Police have labeled Gareth West as the mastermind behind this sophisticated network of scams. According to CBC, US authorities disclosed he planned a large-scale scheme that fooled old people in 46 states into sending money by leading them to think their grandchildren needed help.

West used individuals who called elders, impersonating grandchildren who were injured or arrested and needed money for bail in a hurry. Victims were told to keep quiet and not discuss the information. Then, scammers would connect them with phony lawyers or agents and organize cash pickups—on occasion utilizing ride-share drivers or couriers.

Successful Businessman Façade

Publicly, West kept up the facade of a successful Montreal-based real estate tycoon. Authorities indicated he financed the ill-gotten gains with luxury cars, upscale homes, and expensive vacations.

Only last month, the CBC reported police tried to arrest him in March at a home in Burlington, Ont., but found the property under construction. West had been in temporary residence nearby and escaped before police reached the scene.

Before this, the RCMP, together with US Homeland Security, the IRS, and police in the area, arrested 23 other individuals linked to the case. West and one accomplice, Jimmy Ylimaki, however, had been evading capture.

A $30 Million Fraud

US authorities estimate that this scam bilked more than $30 million out of old victims. West faces up to 40 years in prison if he is convicted in the US. According to an Economic Times report, he will appear before a Quebec judge on Saturday, which may initiate the extradition process.

At the same time, authorities and senior advocacy groups are calling on people to remain alert. They say that if a person receives an unsolicited call saying they need money and that a relative is in difficulty, the best thing to do is hang up, check with family, and report the matter right away.

</excerpt>

Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Monday that Canada has resumed trade talks with the United States. The announcement came after Canada revoked its plan to tax American technology companies.

Trump Halted Talks Over Digital Tax

On Friday, US President Donald Trump reacted sharply to Canada’s decision to go ahead with the Digital Services Tax (DST). He called it a “direct and blatant attack on our country.”

In response, Trump suspended all trade negotiations with Canada the same day. He also warned that the US would soon announce tariffs on Canadian goods.

He wrote on Truth Social, “We will let Canada know the tariff that they will be paying to do business with the United States of America within the next seven-day period.”

Ottawa Withdraws DST to Save Trade Talks

To defuse the situation, Canada’s Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne confirmed the government’s move to drop the tax. He said Canada now expects a “mutually beneficial comprehensive” trade deal with the US.

The government issued a statement saying, “Canada would rescind the Digital Services Tax (DST) in anticipation of a mutually beneficial comprehensive trade arrangement with the United States.” The US and Canada have agreed to restart trade talks immediately. Both sides aim to finalize a deal by July 21, 2025.

What Is the Digital Services Tax?

Canada originally planned to start collecting the DST on June 30. The tax would apply to Canadian and foreign tech companies that earn money from Canadian users.

The policy mainly targeted large US firms like Google, Amazon, and Meta. Canada argued that these companies should pay tax on revenues made inside its borders.

US Officials Strongly Opposed the Tax

The plan drew heavy criticism from US lawmakers and trade officials. They claimed it unfairly singled out American companies and risked damaging US-Canada relations. Trump acted fast. He saw the tax as hostile and shut down trade discussions. His threat of tariffs added pressure on Ottawa to change course.

Trade Talks Now Back on Track

With the tax withdrawn, both countries have returned to the negotiating table. Leaders from both sides now hope to avoid further conflict and reach a deal that benefits both nations.

</excerpt>

US President Donald Trump issued a statement on Friday that his administration is putting trade talks with Canada on hold due to frustration with Canada’s digital tax aimed at big US tech firms. Trump characterized the Canada tax as “egregious” in a posting on his Truth Social platform and said all trade talks with Ottawa would be stopped immediately.

“Due to this outrageous tax, we are immediately terminating ALL talks on Trade with Canada.”, Trump said. He also threatened to inform Canada within a week of a new rate of tariffs, which he called Canada “very difficult” to negotiate with.

The action follows increasing tensions between the two nations over Canada’s digital services tax imposed in 2023. Officials from the US have raised alarm over the impact of the tax on American businesses, and talks on dispute settlement began last year. The Computer & Communications Industry Association reported that US digital services providers would remit billions of taxes to Canada by June 30.

Canada had yet to face some of Trump’s more general trade actions, such as a broad 10% tariff imposed in April that covered most other countries with which the US trades. Yet Canada has endured its own list of targeted trade restrictions.

Since coming back to the office in January, Trump has rolled back duties on several imports, ranging from steel and aluminum to cars. Most recently, Washington doubled 25% tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum to 50%. In retaliation, Ottawa said it would update its 25% retaliatory tariffs on US metals if a trade deal is not within 30 days.

The new trade war brings the tensions between two of North America’s biggest economies to a boiling point and has the potential to complicate cross-border economic relations already tense due to earlier disputes throughout Trump’s first term in office.

</excerpt>

President Donald Trump on Friday announced that he is temporarily halting all trade negotiations with Canada regarding its Digital Services Tax policy aimed at hitting American technology companies. In a Truth Social post, the 78-year-old stated that Ottawa had notified his administration that the tax would become effective starting Monday.

Trump Calls DST of Canada a ‘Blatant Attack’ on U.S. Tech Companies

“We have just been informed that Canada, a very difficult Country to TRADE with, including the fact that they have charged our Farmers as much as 400% Tariffs, for years, on Dairy Products, has just announced that they are putting a Digital Services Tax on our American Technology Companies, which is a direct and blatant attack on our Country,” Trump said in his post.

Accuses Canada of Copying EU’s Digital Tax Approach

Donald Trump also alleged that Canada is ‘copying the European Union, who have done the same thing, and are negotiating with us, too’.

“Based on this egregious Tax, we are hereby terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada, effective immediately. We will let Canada know the Tariff that they will be paying to do business with the United States of America within the next seven-day period.”

Canada’s Digital Services Tax: What It Is and Who It Targets

Canada introduced a 3% Digital Services Tax (DST) on revenue from certain digital services offered to Canadian consumers through the Digital Services Tax Act, which took effect on June 28, 2024, after receiving royal assent on June 20, 2024.

It hones in on large enterprises with international revenue of €750 million (~US$801 million) and Canadian digital services revenue of more than C$20 million (~US$14.8 million) per annum.

Four Revenue Categories Covered Under the DST

The levy has a retroactive effect to income generated since January 1, 2022, with the initial payment due by June 30, 2025. It extends to four categories of revenues: online marketplace services, online advertising (e.g., Google), social media services, and sales or licensing of Canadian user information.

On June 23, 1985, Air India Flight 182, also known as Kanishka, exploded mid-air near Cork, Ireland, killing all 329 people onboard. The Babbar Khalsa, a Khalistani terrorist group based in Canada, orchestrated the attack. Most of the victims were Canadians of Indian origin.

Leaders Call for Global Cooperation

As Canada observed its National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism, Carney vowed to strengthen global cooperation to prevent future attacks. He said, “Canada’s new government unequivocally stands against terrorism, and we will deliver on our mandate of change to keep communities safe.”

Meanwhile, opposition leader Pierre Poilievre also paid tribute to the victims. “Today we remember the 329 innocent lives lost in the Air India Flight 182 bombing — most of them Canadians. It remains the worst mass murder in our history,” he wrote on X. Poilievre assured that Canada’s Conservatives remain committed to fighting terrorism both at home and abroad.

Air India Memorial Ceremony

At the Ahakista Memorial in Ireland, leaders from Canada, India, and Ireland came together to honour the victims. Canadian Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree, India’s Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, and Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin laid wreaths. Additionally, schoolchildren and local residents attended, offering flowers and music as a tribute.

During the ceremony, Puri emphasised the need for stronger cooperation between India and Canada. He said, “India stands ready to do more. Our security agencies, intelligence apparatus, and diplomatic channels are fully committed to partnering with the world to ensure that such tragedies are never repeated.”

Finally, Irish officials, including County Cork Mayor Joe Carroll, joined in laying wreaths to honour the victims.

</excerpt>

Canada will extend its 25% counter-tariffs on American steel and aluminum by July 21 if a new trade agreement is not signed, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Thursday. It follows Washington’s move to double tariffs on Canadian metal imports.

“Canada will modify its current counter-tariffs on American steel and aluminum products on July 21, at the conclusion of that 30-day window,” Carney announced during a press conference.

Carney also announced measures of support for Canada’s steel and aluminum industries in an effort to protect them from the effects of the 50% US tariffs. These consist of new procurement policies that prefer domestic producers and more Corrosive anti-dumping regulations.

Having exported the most steel and aluminium to the US, Canada has been severely impacted by the hike in tariffs. Carney earlier this month denounced US tariffs as “illegal” and “unjustified,” leading both nations to engage in “intensive discussions” to re-establish their trade relationship.

The negotiations are the follow-up to a meeting between Carney and US President Donald Trump on the fringes of the recent G7 leaders’ summit in Canada, where leaders called on Trump to relax trade tensions. A deal can be agreed within 30 days if the talks progress well, Canadian officials say.

Carney emphasized that any successful deal must guarantee stable trade relations with the US while keeping Canada’s hand free to participate freely in international trade. “A good outcome would stabilise the trading relationship with the United States and maintain open access to their markets, without limiting our global trade options,” he stated.

Canada last year shipped 5.95 million tonnes of steel and 3.15 million tonnes of aluminum into the US, American government statistics reveal. As the clock ticks, the fate of these trade negotiations could have a dramatic impact on North America’s economy.

</excerpt>

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney held their first formal bilateral meeting after relations between the two countries soured in 2023. They met during the G7 Summit held in Kananaskis, Alberta. This summit also marked Modi’s first official visit to Canada in ten years. The meeting came after nearly two years of frozen diplomatic engagement due to a major controversy.

The Diplomatic Breakdown in 2023

Tensions began in September 2023 when then-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Indian authorities of being involved in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian Sikh separatist. Nijjar led the banned Khalistan Tiger Force and was labeled a terrorist by India. India firmly rejected Trudeau’s accusation, calling it “absurd,” and blamed Canada for allowing anti-India elements to operate freely. The fallout was severe. Both countries expelled several diplomats. They also halted trade negotiations and senior-level talks, pushing their relationship to a historic low.

A Warmer Tone in 2025

In contrast, Modi’s visit in 2025 received a warm welcome. Mark Carney said, “It’s my great honour to have you here.” Both leaders described their meeting as “excellent” and “positive,” suggesting a new willingness to rebuild ties. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed that the discussion was “very positive and constructive.” He explained that the leaders focused on shared democratic values, people-to-people links, and economic cooperation. Misri added, “The Prime Ministers agreed to take calibrated steps to restore stability to this very important relationship.”

Steps Toward Normalization

One of the first steps agreed upon was appointing new High Commissioners in each other’s capitals. This move marked a major symbolic reset, as both nations had withdrawn their top diplomats during the dispute. The leaders also decided to restart high-level dialogue on key areas such as trade, education, infrastructure, and migration. Both sides instructed their officials to resume trade negotiations that had been on hold since 2023. According to the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office, the two leaders “reaffirmed the importance of Canada-India ties, based upon mutual respect, the rule of law, and a commitment to the principle of sovereignty and territorial integrity.” They also agreed to return to regular consular services for citizens and businesses.

Past Accusations and Investigations

The shift in tone followed a long period of friction. After Trudeau’s claims, Canada expelled six Indian diplomats. India responded by withdrawing its acting High Commissioner and five officials. In October 2024, Canadian authorities further accused India’s High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma and his team of being involved in the murder. When Canada requested diplomatic immunity to be waived, India refused and pulled out its entire diplomatic staff. On October 14, 2024, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police publicly accused Indian agents of orchestrating operations in Canada. However, a Canadian commission report in January 2025 found “no definitive link” to any foreign state.

Protests and Political Sensitivity

Despite this reconciliation, Modi’s visit to Canada drew protests. A few dozen demonstrators, including pro-Khalistan supporters, gathered in Calgary. They tore Indian flags and protested Modi’s presence. Still, Prime Minister Carney defended his decision to invite Modi. He emphasized India’s role in solving global challenges. “India has been coming to the G7 since 2019 and it’s a testament to the importance of your country, to your leadership, and to the importance that we look to tackle together,” Carney said during their meeting.

A Strong Trade and Investment Relationship

India and Canada maintain strong economic ties. In 2023, India exported goods worth USD 7.53 billion to Canada. Canadian exports to India totaled CAD 5.12 billion. The total merchandise trade for that year reached CAD 12.65 billion. From January to August 2024, goods trade reached CAD 8.55 billion, with India exporting CAD 5.22 billion. Trade in services was also significant. In 2023, bilateral services trade reached CAD 13.49 billion. During the first half of 2024, the figure stood at CAD 7.85 billion. Canadian pension funds have invested more than CAD 75 billion in India, showing strong financial trust. Over 600 Canadian companies operate in India, while over 1,000 more are exploring business there. Indian companies in Canada are active in IT, banking, natural resources, healthcare, and financial services.

Key Imports and Export

India’s major exports to Canada include pharmaceuticals, electronics, jewelry, engineering goods, seafood, and auto parts. In return, India imports Canadian products such as potash, pulses, aluminum, iron scrap, newsprint, industrial chemicals, and gemstones. The two leaders also explored cooperation in clean energy, artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, food security, fertilizers, and critical minerals.

A Deep Connection Through Diaspora

Canada is home to nearly 1.8 million people of Indian origin and about 1 million non-resident Indians. Together, they make up more than 3% of the Canadian population. Additionally, over 427,000 Indian students are currently enrolled in Canadian institutions, making India the largest source of international students. This large Indian diaspora has always acted as a cultural and emotional bridge between the two nations.

India’s Concerns Over Extremism

Despite improving ties, India remains concerned about extremist activities in Canada. It has asked Ottawa to take action on long-pending extradition requests. These include names like Lakhbir Singh Landa, Gurjinder Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Gurjeet Singh, and Arshdeep Singh Gill — individuals facing terror-related charges. Modi’s meeting with Carney is expected to reopen these discussions. However, due to political sensitivities, progress on this front may remain slow.

</excerpt>

India and Canada have decided to fully restore their diplomatic relations. Both countries will appoint new high commissioners after months of tension and silence between their governments.

Breakthrough at the G7 Summit

This major step came during a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the G7 Summit in Kananaskis.

After the meeting, the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that both leaders agreed to return to normal diplomatic relations. They will now fill the diplomatic positions that were left vacant after both sides expelled each other’s envoys last year.

The Root of the Dispute

In 2024, former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Indian diplomats of supporting violent actions, including harassment and threats, against Canadians.

Following these serious allegations, the Canadian government refused to remove diplomatic immunity for Indian officials. Then-foreign affairs minister Melanie Joly referred to “a number of violent incidents” as the reason for this decision.

India quickly reacted. It withdrew six Indian diplomats from Canada and expelled an equal number of Canadian envoys from India. These actions froze diplomatic engagement between the two countries.

At the time, Trudeau stated, “It is obvious that the government of India made a fundamental error in thinking that they could engage in supporting criminal activity against Canadians here on Canadian soil, whether it be murders or extortion or other violent acts.”

Since then, all high-level talks between the nations had stopped.

A New Beginning with New Leaders

Prime Minister Modi’s recent meeting with Mark Carney is now seen as a turning point. Modi described the discussions as “excellent” and highlighted shared values between the two countries.

He said, “India and Canada are connected by a strong belief in democracy, freedom and rule of law.” He also added, “PM Carney and I look forward to working closely to add momentum to the India-Canada friendship.”

In response, Carney said it was his “great honour” to welcome Modi at the G7 Summit. He remarked, “It’s a testament to the importance of your country, to your leadership, and to the importance of the issues that we look to tackle together — from energy security and AI to the fight against transnational repression and terrorism.”

Diplomatic Relations Move Forward

The decision to appoint new envoys marks the beginning of renewed trust and cooperation. Both India and Canada seem ready to move forward and focus on common goals, such as global security, emerging technologies, and counterterrorism efforts.

This renewed engagement signals that both governments are committed to repairing and strengthening their bilateral relationship after a year of silence and mistrust.

Canada pledged military aid, while leaders debated Russia sanctions and Middle East de-escalation.
</excerpt>

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy landed in Canada on Tuesday, where Prime Minister Mark Carney made a fresh C$2 billion ($1.47 billion) package of military assistance to aid Ukraine’s war against Russia. The promise comes as Zelenskyy has made an appeal to G7 nations to offer greater support as internal rifts continue to impede collective action on Ukraine and increasing tensions in West Asia.

While Zelenskyy advocated for increased support and new sanctions on Russia, US President Donald Trump departed early from the G7 summit, citing urgent changes in West Asia. His premature departure surprised everybody and contradicted French President Emmanuel Macron’s claim that it was in line with ceasefire efforts between Iran and Israel.

A Russian missile attack on Kyiv last night killed 12 individuals, which Zelenskyy underscored as proof of the pressing need for collective support. “We are prepared to have peace talks and an unconditional ceasefire, but under pressure,” he said. Carney and other leaders of the G7 echoed the use of applying “maximum pressure” against Moscow to pressure it to the negotiating table.

Even as Canada reaffirmed support, Zelenskyy recognized American aid as still central and hoped to negotiate further military assistance with Trump. Major proposals, such as reducing the price of Russian oil, were postponed because the price of oil globally increased.

G7 leaders did issue a communique calling for de-escalation in West Asia and affirming Israel’s right to self-defence, holding Iran responsible for the crisis in the region. In the meantime, Trump supported the return of Russia to the G7, which was endorsed by the Kremlin, downplaying the role of the G7.

Carney invited non-G7 countries such as India, Brazil, and South Africa to expand alliances and reduce dependence on the US, while G7 talks on AI, migration, and critical minerals remain unresolved without US endorsement.

</excerpt>

The heads of the Group of Seven (G7) countries- Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, will gather in Kananaskis, Alberta, between June 15 and 17 for the 51st G7 summit. The secluded location in the Canadian Rockies provides a backdrop for tough talk during a time of international uncertainty.

Initially introduced in 1975 as the G6, the bloc evolved into the G7 upon the addition of Canada the following year. Russia was added in 1998 to create the G8 before being suspended in 2014 after annexing Crimea. The bloc is currently the G7.

High Stakes: Middle East Conflict and Trade Tensions

This year’s summit comes amid tensions reaching a boiling point worldwide. Israel’s recent wide-scale attacks on Iranian military and nuclear facilities are likely to be at center stage, as G7 leaders weigh the implications of potentially wider regional war.

Trade will also be on the agenda, especially in view of US President Donald Trump’s aggressive tariff policy. Even though Trump recently suspended most of the tariffs he had imposed, China is left out. The question isn’t officially on the agenda but hangs over the summit, especially for member countries expecting to tie down better trade deals ahead of July 9 when Trump’s tariff holiday expires.

Controversy Over Guest Invitations

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, hosting the seventh summit for Canada, has invited some non-G7 leaders as well. Those confirmed to attend include Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was also invited, though his presence is not confirmed.

Modi’s invitation has sparked backlash within Canada. Relations between the two countries have been strained since Canada accused India of involvement in the 2023 killing of a Sikh separatist leader. Sikh organizations in Canada have labeled Modi’s inclusion a “betrayal” and “grave insult.” Carney defended the decision, emphasizing India’s global economic importance and recent progress in bilateral law enforcement cooperation.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is also invited, as are Australia, Brazil, Indonesia, South Africa, and South Korea’s leaders.

Trump’s Trade Legacy and Diplomatic Tensions

Trump’s last G7 visit was contentious. During the 2018 summit in Canada, he suddenly withheld support for the final communiqué and publicly attacked then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. This time, observers predict Trump to use a more muted tone.

John Kirton of the G7 Research Group said Trump would not risk disrupting the cohesion of the summit, particularly given that the United States will host the G7 in 2027. “He doesn’t want to kill the golden goose of the G7 before he can stage the ‘biggest, best summit ever,'” Kirton said to NDTV World.

Formal Agenda: Security, Energy, and Future Partnerships

Though, as the G7 2025 summit website indicates, talks will center on three primary issues: protection of the global community, energy security and digital transformation, and forging strategic future partnerships, these stated themes may fall on deaf ears given dramatic escalations of conflict in the Middle East.

As the summit gets underway, the world waits anxiously to discover if the G7 will be able to offer a collective response to deepening global crises.

The operation led to the largest cocaine seizure in the department’s history.
</excerpt>

One of the world’s largest narco-terror networks connected to Khalistan sympathizers has been busted by the authorities in Canada. The Peel Regional Police confiscated 479 kilograms of cocaine worth $47.9 million during the biggest drug bust in the history of the department.

Nine people were arrested following the raid, seven of whom are Canadian citizens of Indian origin.

Project Pelican: Cross-Border Operation Exposed to Cocaine

Code-named Project Pelican, the probe started in June 2024 to investigate a drug trafficking ring employing commercial trucking routes from the US to Canada. Peel police say that the network had extensive connections with Mexican-based drug cartels and US distributors.

The authorities believe the proceeds of the drug trade were being diverted to fund terror activities in Punjab, including protests and the acquisition of weapons.

Massive Multi-Agency Crackdown

As of November 2024, Peel Police worked with key agencies such as the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and the US Homeland Security Investigations Border Enforcement Task Force in Detroit. Through the partnership, several individuals, trucking firms, and warehouses involved in the drug operation were identified.

From February to May 2025, the joint operation resulted in the forfeiture of almost 200 kilograms of cocaine from commercial vehicles. Additional raids throughout the Greater Toronto Area uncovered additional narcotics and illicit firearms.

Arrests and Charges

The suspects are Sajgith Yogendrarajah (31, Toronto), Manpreet Singh (44, Brampton), Philip Tep (39, Hamilton), Arvinder Powar (29, Brampton), Karamjit Singh (36, Caledon), Gurtej Singh (36, Caledon), Sartaj Singh (27, Cambridge), Shiv Onkar Singh (31, Georgetown), and Hao Tommy Huynh (27, Mississauga). They are accused of 35 charges, including drug trafficking and weapon possession.

“A total of 479 kg of bricked cocaine, with an estimated value of $47.9 million, plus two illegally loaded semi-automatic handguns. The accused were retained for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton,” Peel Police stated.

Ontario Solicitor General S. Kerzner commended the success of Project Pelican. “Project Pelican is evidence of what the police can do when they have the tools and equipment that will assist in keeping our communities safe,” he said.

</excerpt>

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) confirmed on Tuesday that the United States extradited a Pakistani citizen living in Canada on charges of attempting to commit acts of terrorism and providing material support to ISIS.

“Major news… earlier this afternoon, Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, a Pakistani citizen residing in Canada, was extradited to the United States on charges of attempting to provide material support to ISIS and attempting to commit acts of terrorism,” FBI Director Kash Patel announced in a post on X.

Major news… earlier this afternoon, Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, a Pakistani citizen residing in Canada, was extradited to the United States on charges of attempting to provide material support to ISIS and attempting to commit acts of terrorism.

In the fall of last year, Khan…

— FBI Director Kash Patel (@FBIDirectorKash) June 10, 2025

U.S. officials accused the 20-year-old suspect, also known as Shahzeb Jadoon, of planning a mass shooting targeting Jewish individuals at a community center in Brooklyn, New York. They said Khan intended to attack on October 7, 2024—exactly one year after Hamas launched its deadly assault on Israel, which sparked the ongoing Gaza conflict.

Shahzeb Khan planned the Brooklyn attack to support ISIS

According to AFP, Khan allegedly intended to travel from Canada to New York to carry out the ISIS-inspired shooting. US Attorney Jay Clayton stated, “He planned to use automatic weapons to kill as many members of our Jewish community as possible, all in support of IS.”

Authorities arrested Khan in Canada on September 4, 2024, before he could execute his plans. FBI Director Patel credited the timely arrest to the efforts of law enforcement. He said the FBI teams and their partners exposed the plans and shut them down, and Canadian authorities arrested Khan on September 4, 2024.

Undercover Officers Foiled the Plot

The U.S. Justice Department revealed that Khan’s plan unraveled after he allegedly shared his intentions with individuals he believed were co-conspirators, who were, in fact, undercover law enforcement agents. His capture and subsequent extradition highlight the ongoing global threat of terrorism and the increased targeting of Jewish communities.

“This case is a reminder of the constant threat of terrorism facing every corner of the world, as well as the disturbing rise in threats against our Jewish communities,” Kash Patel added. “Your FBI will continue to be on guard and work around the clock to counter them.”

Officials warn conditions remain dangerous amid dry weather and shifting winds.
</excerpt>

Over 25,000 individuals have been compelled to flee as extensive wildfires raging in three Canadian provinces have been confirmed by officials on Sunday. The provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta remain battling dozens of fires, leading to a large-scale displacement of citizens and seriously affecting the air quality in the region spanning the US-Canada border.

Manitoba was most severely impacted, issuing a state of emergency a week ago and relocating about 17,000 residents. About 8,000 people were evacuated in Saskatchewan, and Alberta relocated approximately 1,300 residents to a safe area. Officials say the numbers may increase as dry weather and changing winds complicate containment.

Thick smoke from the blazes has covered much farther than Canada, worsening air quality and visibility in numerous US states, such as North Dakota, Montana, Minnesota, and South Dakota. Both sides health officials recommend restricting outdoor activity and mask-wearing when needed.

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe stressed the importance of the next few days, emphasizing the need for weather shifts and rain to assist in containing the fires. Manitoba’s evacuation shelters are clogged, and thousands have found temporary lodging in public facilities and shelters. The concern over limited hotel space was expressed by Indigenous leaders, who called for emergency measures to place displaced residents above the waiting lists.

One of the largest evacuations seen in Manitoba since the 1990s, the wildfire crisis is a stark reminder of the growing impact of climate change. The fire near Flin Flon, Manitoba, began in Saskatchewan and has destroyed power infrastructure while threatening entire communities.

American authorities have deployed firefighting gear and personnel to reinforce Canadian efforts. In the meantime, smoke from the wildfires will continue to impact air quality in the northern United States for the next week.

He has filed a lawsuit against her and lottery authorities, alleging poor guidance and a system that enabled the betrayal.
</excerpt>

A Winnipeg man is suing his former girlfriend for allegedly absconding with his CA$5 million (approximately Rs. 30 crore) lottery win with her new boyfriend.

Lawrence Campbell claims to have bought the 2024 winning lottery ticket but was not able to claim the winnings himself because he lacked valid identification. Following the recommendation of Western Canada Lottery Corporation (WCLC) officials, Campbell requested his then-girlfriend, Krystal Ann McKay, to come in and claim the wins on his behalf.

In a statement to CTV News, Campbell explained that he had complete confidence in McKay and called their relationship ‘a loyal, committed and promising romantic partnership’ that had existed for more than 18 months. The two had been cohabiting at the time. Because Campbell did not have a bank account, he also accepted letting McKay deposit the prize money under her own name.

At first, all seemed to be well. The couple had taken a verification video at a Shoppers Drug Mart and had their photos taken with the symbolic big cheque. The victory was also hailed in public as Campbell’s birthday present to McKay. But McKay’s serious face in the photos raised eyebrows.

“She had been bugging me for three weeks to obtain a ticket, but I never went to obtain one,” Campbell remembered. “Then we drove past one, and I was like ‘OK, I might as well go obtain you one right now.'”

But days later, after winning the prize, McKay disappeared. She stopped coming back to their common hotel room, Campbell said, and cut all contact. When he finally located her, he said he found her “in bed with another guy.”

Campbell’s lawyer added further, “She ghosted him, would not answer his calls or his messages, she blocked him on her social media, and even took out a protection order.” McKay has denied all the accusations, her lawyer said.

The suit, which has been filed in Manitoba’s Court of King’s Bench, not only sues the McKay but also WCLC and Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries as co-defendants. Campbell complains that the lottery companies provided inadequate advice and did not warn him of the possible risks of having someone else pick up the winnings.

This case is about systemic karma, not the system itself,” Campbell’s attorney contended. “A circumstance brought about, or at least facilitated, by the state-owned lottery corporations processing claims in Manitoba.

Otherwise, Canada must pay \$61 billion. PM Carney rejected the proposal, asserting Canada’s sovereignty.
</excerpt>

US President Donald Trump has rekindled hostilities with Canada through a provocative new offer. Writing on Twitter, Trump said Canada could have “free entry” into the United States’ Golden Dome defence system—on the condition that it accepts becoming the 51st state. Otherwise, the system would not be cheap.

“I informed Canada, which badly wishes to be included in our magnificent Golden Dome System, that it will pay $61 Billion Dollars if they continue as a separate, but unequal, Nation,” Trump posted on Truth Social. He went on to say that if the statehood option is taken by Ottawa, “it will cost them zero dollars,” and asserted that the Canadian government is said to be ‘considering the offer’.

Canada Rejects Statehood Proposal

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who sat down with Trump in May after winning his federal election, has categorically ruled out a merger with the US. During talks on the missile defence program, Carney admitted the advantages of having a system but scoffed at Trump’s political conditions.

“Is it a good idea for Canada? Yes, it is good to have protections in place for Canadians,” Carney said during a recent press briefing. But he was quick to state that Canada isn’t interested in giving up its sovereignty, going on to say, “Canada is not and will never be for sale.”

Worsening US-Canada Relations

The diplomatic relationships between the surrounding nations have become tattered since Trump came back to power. With past threats of tariffs and a recent drive for Canada to join the United States, Trump’s strategy has further stretched the gap. His recent proposal, adorned with taunts, still keeps Ottawa and Canadians in a state of discomfort.

What Is the Golden Dome?

The Golden Dome is an American missile defense system in development. The estimated cost of $175 billion will be used to protect against a wide array of threats, including ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and hypersonic missiles. Due to become operational by 2029, Trump called the shield one that would “protect us—even if [the missiles] are launched from space.”

In spite of the strategic interest in joining such a program, Canada is determined to retain its sovereignty while pursuing negotiations on security cooperation.

The trip underscores royal support amid delicate UK-US-Canada relations.
</excerpt>

King Charles touched down in Ottawa on Monday for a historic visit emphasizing his commitment to Canada, a country that has him as its monarch but which US President Donald Trump has provocatively proposed might be made the 51st US state.

Queen Camilla joined Charles as he was greeted on the airport tarmac by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Governor General Mary Simon, the King’s representative in Canada. The trip’s centerpiece will be Charles opening the Canadian Parliament on Tuesday a duty last done by his mother, late Queen Elizabeth II, 68 years ago. Although currently receiving cancer treatment that restricted his public appearances, the 76-year-old monarch’s two-day visit to Canada evidences his keen attachment to Canada, one of the 15 Commonwealth realms over which he serves as head of state.

Trump has consistently made it clear that he would like to annex Canada, a proposition firmly dismissed by Carney, whose recent general election win was in part due to his unequivocal rejection of the proposal. Canada’s representative in the UK, Ralph Goodale, asserted that the message from the Prime Minister on Canada’s sovereignty remains unshakeable, and King Charles’s visit will serve to reinforce this position.

Over the past few months, Charles has expressed subtle backing of Canada, donning Canadian honors, calling himself King of Canada, and glorifying the national flag as a source of pride. The visit, though, coincides with a sensitive diplomatic equilibrium, with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer eager to keep on good terms with America, specifically on Ukraine and commerce.

Starmer’s call to invite Trump on a rare second state visit to the UK is said to have angered Canadians, highlighting complexities Charles must navigate in fulfilling his role in light of shifting global relations.

</excerpt>

Britain’s King Charles III is soon to travel to Canada on a brief but significant visit in the wake of continued talk by US President Donald Trump about potentially making Canada the 51st state. The 76-year-old king, who is also Canada’s head of state via the Commonwealth, has said nothing regarding Trump’s controversial proposals, despite the US president’s well-documented affection for the British royal family.

Charles, who has been fighting cancer for more than a year, accepted an invitation from Canada’s new Prime Minister Mark Carney to give the “speech from the throne” at the reopening of parliament on May 27. The speech will set the government agenda, a significant role usually played by Canada’s governor general. Queen Camilla will join Charles on the 24-hour trip to Ottawa.

A Buckingham Palace official called the visit “short but hopefully impactful” and pointed to the importance of the event in light of increasing tensions over sovereignty and trade, particularly with Trump’s latest tariff increases and threats to annex Canada. Prime Minister Carney stressed that Charles would deliver the government’s proposals to make the country stronger, and he framed the speech as an “historic honour.

This will be Charles’s 20th time in Canada, but his first since becoming king in September 2022, and Camilla’s sixth time, her first as queen. On the agenda is a community celebration of Canada’s diversity, a sitting down with Carney and Governor General Mary Simon, a ceremonial tree planting at Rideau Hall, and a carriage ride with full military honors to the Senate to hear the throne speech.

The royal visit will end with a wreath-laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. To aid the king’s health in visiting, a Canadian doctor has been attached, as he undergoes weekly cancer treatment.

The visit is timely as Canada asserts sovereignty in the face of growing US pressures and political gossip.

He urged Canadians to confront the past and work toward a future rooted in true inclusion and justice.
</excerpt>

Prime Minister Mark Carney commemorated the Komagata Maru tragedy anniversary by designating it as an unfortunate reminder of how once Canada fell short of its very basic principles. He appealed to Canadians to recall the injustice and strive towards a future where inclusivity is not merely a catchphrase.

In a statement released on Friday, Carney looked back at the 1914 event, when 376 Indian passengers who were from Sikh, Muslim, and Hindu communities—arrived on board the Japanese steamship Komagata Maru, having made a long journey across the Pacific, hoping to find refuge in Canada.

“Canadian authorities, nevertheless, invoking exclusionary and discriminatory legislations, denied them entry,” he said, remembering the historic event. The passengers were held on board the ship docked in Vancouver harbour for two months, deprived of access to primary necessities such as food, water, and medical attention.

“When they were sent back to India, several were put behind bars or assassinated there,” the Prime Minister continued, remembering the dark fate of their adventure.

“The tragedy of Komagata Maru is a painful reminder of how, at times in our past, Canada was short of the principles we now claim to hold,” Carney said. “We cannot change the past, but we have to face it; to act with intention, to make sure that such injustices can never happen again, and to forge a richer future where inclusion is not a slogan, but a reality: lived, practised, and defended.”

Describing the anniversary as both solemn and meaningful, Carney added: “Let this solemn anniversary be a call of remembrance and conscience. To commemorate the past is to learn from it, and to learn from it is to act.”

</excerpt>

Canada has started negotiations with the US to be a part of the Golden Dome missile defense system. Canadian PM Mark Carney made the confirmation on Wednesday. The US-led $175 billion program will construct a multi-layered system to shoot down missiles. It would for the first time fire weapons into space as well. PM Carney added that Canada needs to defend itself and that he had had high-level discussions with US President Donald Trump.

Trump accepted Canada’s interest. He stated that the system would be fully functional by 2029. This is a signal to change Canada’s defense strategy with threats from space on the rise and tensions with Russia and China.

A Space-Based Missile Shield

Golden Dome will integrate ground and space assets. It will detect and intercept missiles in the four stages of attack: prior to launch, in early flight, in mid-air, and as they re-enter.

The US will place weapons in space in this plan. Satellites and interceptors will take most of the expense. China and Russia are building faster missiles, the Pentagon claims. They make defense systems like Golden Dome critical.

Carney: Canadians Need Protection

PM Carney described the project “a good idea” for Canadian security. He assured that negotiations with Trump and American officials are ongoing. Trump indicated Canada requested to become a participant and has to pay its “fair share.”

Carney further said, “It’s something we are looking at.” But he emphasized that this is not trade negotiation. “These are military decisions, and we will evaluate it accordingly,” he added.

Worries About Future Missile Threats

PM Mark Carney cautioned against missile attacks from space in the immediate future. He inquired if Canada will confront them alone or alongside the US. Besides, he stated that Canada may be affected by decisions made without consulting it—unless it joins the system officially.

New Tone in Canada-US Relations

Canada and the US cooperate in air defense through NORAD. But Carney stated their days of smooth cooperation are gone. Trump’s statement that Canada is to be the “51st state” outraged many. Carney responded, “We cooperate if necessary, but not necessarily cooperate.”

Canada now needs to decide—remain a bystander or assist in shaping missile defense’s future.

</excerpt>

United Kingdom, France, and Canada have conveyed profound concern at the deepening Israeli military attack in Gaza, threatening that tangible measures, such as targeted sanctions, could be taken if Israel fails to stop its campaign and lift limits on humanitarian assistance.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his outrage in a parliamentary session on Tuesday, calling for an urgent ceasefire in the wake of Israel’s heightened assault that has left a minimum of 87 individuals dead over the last 24 hours. Starmer, joined by French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, publicly criticized the actions of Israel as “wholly disproportionate” and the crisis in Gaza as “intolerable.”

The three leaders condemned in a joint statement the extension of military action inside Gaza and illegal settlements on the occupied West Bank. They warned Israel against the forced transfer of Palestinians, describing the actions as illegal under international law. The statement showed Israel’s limited aid deliveries of a few trucks after months of closure and deemed the gesture inadequate.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu blamed those nations for rewarding Hamas, the Palestinian militant movement with Israeli hostages, with “a huge prize.” In the meantime, the Palestinian ambassador to the UK called for a complete embargo of arms to Israel and emphasized responsibility through international tribunals.

UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese stressed that the sanctions must involve the whole Israeli government, not just particular leaders. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot labeled Israel’s easing of the blockade as “totally insufficient,” using Gaza as a “death trap” because of its continuing violence and restrictions on aid.

Amid increasing global pressure, 23 nations made a joint appeal to Israel to open the gates to unhindered humanitarian assistance to avert massive starvation, condemning the politicization of relief operations under the command of Israeli armed forces.

The future of the conflict is uncertain as Netanyahu’s insistence on the continuation of the offensive conflicts with increasing global demands for restraint and justice.

</excerpt>

Canada PM Mark Carney formally reasserted his government’s complete backing of Ukraine in his first face-to-face meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The two leaders arrived in Rome on Saturday, before Pope Leo XIV was inaugurated at the Vatican.

PM Mark Carney vowed that Canada would remain in “steadfast and unwavering” support of Ukraine and emphasized that peace cannot be achieved except through Kyiv’s participation. The meeting occurred just one day prior to a pivotal Vatican ritual that attracted world leaders, including those from Europe, the US, and the rest of the world.

Strong Vow from Canada’s New PM

PM Mark Carney, newly elected PM of Canada, made Ukraine a central issue during his first set of international engagements. Addressing Volodymyr Zelenskyy directly, he stated, “There can be no peace without the full support and participation of Ukraine.” He clearly established that Kyiv would enjoy the “absolute support” of Canada.

This unequivocal statement is indicative of an evident continuity in Canadian foreign policy regarding Ukraine, even with changing leadership.

Vatican Diplomacy Provides the Forum

The two leaders met in Rome, where they are both attending Sunday’s historic inaugural Mass of Pope Leo XIV. The great international occasion has proved to be a diplomatic forum for sideline summits among major world leaders.

The Pope’s inauguration drew a variety of leaders, offering a chance for intense geopolitical talks off the record and outside official summits.

US and G7 Framework Provide Cachet

US President Donald Trump has made plans to address both Russia and Ukraine’s presidents on Monday. His move follows the growing international attempts at influencing the way toward peace. In the meantime, PM Carney also took advantage of his time in Rome to hold meetings with Italian PM Giorgia Meloni, President Sergio Mattarella, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

These encounters are part of advance diplomatic efforts prior to the G7 summit, to be held in Canada this June. Strong words uttered by Carney in Rome indicate that Ukraine will be a priority on Canada’s global agenda. With this reaffirmation, Carney has made his inaugural grand foreign policy move—loudly and explicitly taking the side of Kyiv.

Wildfires have swept across central Canada, killing two individuals and prompting 1,000 residents to evacuate their homes in Manitoba. The fire extended to Lac-du-Bonnet, a tiny town 100 kilometers north of Winnipeg. The combination of intense heat, dry conditions, and powerful winds produced extremely hazardous firefighting conditions.

Firefighters are now fighting 92 active wildfires across the country. Of these, 24 rage within Manitoba alone. Authorities now worry the 2024 wildfire season might rival that of 2023.

Fire Traps, Kills Two in Lac-du-Bonnet

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confirmed on Wednesday that two individuals perished as flames trapped them in Lac-du-Bonnet. As told by RCMP’s Chris Hastie, rescue teams attempted to locate the victims on Tuesday but did not succeed as a result of extreme conditions. They only arrived at the spot the next morning, when the conditions were no longer extreme.

Shortly afterward, Premier Wab Kinew expressed his sorrow and extended condolences. He referred to the loss as “deeply saddening.” Local administrator Loren Schinkel said the whole community mourns now, referring to Lac-du-Bonnet as a “tight-knit” town rocked by tragedy.

Evacuations Spread as Winds Fan the Blaze

As a response to the fast-spreading fire, authorities promptly ordered the evacuation of 1,000 individuals in Lac-du-Bonnet. Other Manitoba communities started evacuating as well. Southern winds were strong enough to aid the spread of the fire, though officials reported that conditions improved marginally by Wednesday morning.

Five of Manitoba’s 24 fires are currently entirely out of control. One very aggressive fire along the Ontario border has already burned more than 100,000 hectares. Kristin Hayward of the Manitoba Wildfire Service indicated that the province has “very challenging” days ahead with further hot and windy conditions anticipated.

While Manitoba has a big crisis to deal with, the rest of Canada is facing increasing danger too. Firefighters are now dealing with 92 ongoing fires in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario. Drought and heat conditions have fanned the fire.

Climate Change Deepens Canada’s Fire Risks

Experts believe climate change keeps pushing more intense wildfires year after year. More prolonged dry periods, warmer temperatures, and increased winds provide ideal conditions for firestorms. Canada experienced its worst fire season ever in 2023. Firefighters were the only ones who died that year.

But 2024 has already taken civilian lives. These initial deaths are a warning of a brutal season to come. Without drastic action on the climate and more effective prevention, the nation is likely to experience more lethal summers.

</excerpt>

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, newly re-elected, announced a slimmed-down 29-member cabinet on Tuesday, outlining an immediate agenda to retool Canada’s troubled relationship with the United States under President Donald Trump.

Carney, who ran on resisting US pressure, kept senior ministers from Justin Trudeau’s government, such as Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne and US trade minister Dominic LeBlanc. He reiterated his government’s resolve to battle US-imposed tariffs on Canadian products and vowed to move quickly on domestic economic reforms.

Our government will implement its mandate for change with urgency and resolve,” Carney said, with Canadian workers and businesses still reeling from what he termed “unfair” American trade practices.

Although Carney had a meeting with Trump in Washington last week, the negotiations produced no breakthrough on suspending tariffs. In reaction, Carney reasserted his plan to divert economic reliance from the US and spend billions on diversifying trade, as well as on eliminating interprovincial trade barriers and reducing public expenditure.

Cabinet revisions saw Anita Anand take over Melanie Joly’s role as Foreign Affairs Minister, with Joly transferring to Industry. Chrystia Freeland, whose resignation as finance minister a year ago helped bring down Trudeau, stayed on as Minister of Transport and Internal Trade. Tim Hodgson, who is a former Goldman Sachs banker, was made Natural Resources Minister.

Carney also announced 10 junior secretaries of state and a plan to end trade barriers between provinces by July 1. His platform calls for C$130 billion in new spending over four years, with an estimated 2025-26 deficit of C$62.3 billion much higher than earlier estimates.

But not everyone reacted favorably. The Labor unions complained about the abolition of the Labour Minister position, and Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre criticized the cabinet as “Trudeau’s old team,” stating Canadians demanded genuine change, not a reused government.

</excerpt>

Prime Minister Mark Carney will unveil his new cabinet on Tuesday, pledging gender balance among ministers. The oath-taking ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. at Rideau Hall in Ottawa, with Governor General Mary Simon officiating.

Carney, who was elected as the Liberal Party leader on March 9, first organized a smaller cabinet of only 24 members well below the last 39-member cabinet of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. That transition cabinet was sworn in on March 14, just five days after Carney assumed office.

With Parliament to reconvene on May 26 just 28 days since the federal election Carney’s administration has a tight timeline. It is the second-fastest return to the House of Commons in Canadian history, second only to the 21-day turnaround in 1988.

Although Carney has been prime minister since March, he was formally elected to the House of Commons only on April 28. While campaigning, he promised quick action on a number of top issues, and the stage is now set for a crowded legislative session. Among his highest priorities are the removal of federal impediments to interprovincial commerce by Canada Day and the implementation of the “Canada Strong Pass” to offer free entry to national museums and train travel for young people under the age of 18 when accompanied by parents.
