He reportedly received Rs. 40,000 for the data and activated WhatsApp on a SIM for the agent.
</excerpt>

The Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has detained a man named Sahdev Singh Gohil on charges of leaking secret information about the Border Security Force (BSF) and Indian Air Force (IAF) to a Pakistan-based handler.

Gohil, a Kachchh district-based multipurpose health worker, was called in for an initial interrogation on May 1, following intelligence inputs to the ATS that he was in touch with a Pakistani operative. While being interrogated, it came to light that Gohil had been in contact with a woman named Aditi Bharadwaj through WhatsApp between June and July 2023.

Gujarat ATS SP K Siddharth said, “Gujarat ATS arrested Sahdev Singh Gohil, a multipurpose health worker of Kachchh. We received information that he had been passing details relating to BSF and IAF to a Pakistani agent.”

Modus Operandi

According to investigators, Gohil learned about Bharadwaj’s true identity shortly after they started talking. In spite of knowing that she was acting on behalf of Pakistan, he allegedly started sending pictures and videos of BSF and IAF building sites through WhatsApp, as requested by her.

“In the first week of 2025, he purchased a SIM card on his Aadhaar Card and activated WhatsApp on the number for Aditi Bharadwaj using OTP,” Siddharth stated. The number was later allegedly used by the Pakistani agent to obtain the confidential visuals.

Financial Involvement

The authorities have disclosed that Gohil had been paid ₹40,000 in hard cash by an unknown person believed to be a member of the spy ring. His phone has been dispatched to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for further analysis.

“The numbers listed under Aditi Bharadwaj on WhatsApp were being used from Pakistan,” Siddharth confirmed.

Legal Action

A complaint has been lodged with both Gohil and the Pakistani handler under Sections 61 and 148 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The arrest is part of the ATS’s broader campaign to crack down on anti-national activities and those believed to be working for hostile foreign agents, mainly in connection with Pakistan.

</excerpt>

The family of Constable Purnam Kumar Shaw, who reportedly crossed the border near Ferozepur inadvertently on Wednesday and was captured by the Pakistan border guards, are praying for his safe return amidst a tense stand-off between India and Pakistan following the massacre in Kashmir’s Pahalgam.

Shaw, a head constable with the Border Security Force (BSF), is from Hooghly, West Bengal, where his family stays. Shaw was captured by Pakistan rangers after he reportedly inadvertently crossed the border.

“We have been told that release talks are on. The Central Government and State Government are making all efforts. We are praying and hopeful of his safe return,” said his brother, Rajeshwar Pandey.

The constable’s wife, Rajani Shaw, a resident of Rishra, a town 20 km from Kolkata, tearfully appealed to the Government for her husband’s swift release.

“His friend had called. He said that my husband has been kidnapped by the Pakistan side while he was on duty. They have arrested him. I spoke to him for the last time on Tuesday. For 17 years, he has been in service. I am told that flag meetings were going on to bring him back. I want his safe and early release,” she pleaded. The couple has a seven-year-old child.

According to Rajeshwar Pandey, the incident occurred on Wednesday. “His friend said he was on duty and was not feeling well, so he thought to sit under a tree to take rest, and he dozed off. At that moment, Pakistani rangers came, took his arms and took him away. We called the BSF office and they assured us that efforts are on to release him. He was a part of the 24th Battalion,” Pandey stated.

Rajani Shaw recounted her last conversation with her husband. “I last spoke to him on Tuesday at 1 am, and on Wednesday around 6 am, he was detained by Pakistani rangers. I appeal to our Indian Government to bring him back safely,” she said, her voice trembling with emotion.

Expressing his concern, Shaw’s nephew, Rahul Shaw, questioned the circumstances of his crossing the border.

“He has been serving in the BSF for 17 years. Is it believable that he will go on their side? We are worried now that the Pahalgam incident has happened, we don’t know what is happening inside, we just want his safe return,” he said.

According to reports, Shaw had been escorting farmers near the border on Wednesday. Exhausted during duty, he reportedly fell asleep under a tree, without realising that he had entered the Pakistani territory.

The family’s worries regarding Shaw’s safety in Pakistan have multiplied since Shaw’s capture comes within hours of the massacre of Hindu tourists in Kashmir’s Pahalgam by terrorists who supposedly came to India from Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir. The Indian Government has already unequivocally said that the terrorists were directed by elements in Pakistan and aided by Pakistani authorities. India has taken a series of strong diplomatic and strategic steps in response to Pakistan’s alleged support for cross-border terrorism.

</excerpt>

Amid the diplomatic rift and sharp exchange of words between India and Bangladesh over the issue of border fencing work, the Border Security Force has made it clear that it is committed to securing the Indian border on the basis of the long-standing protocol between the two neighbouring countries. Senior BSF officials said that the row over border fencing erupted only after the change of guard in Dhaka and the ascent of the Mohammed Yunus-led interim Government following the ouster of the elected Government of Sheikh Hasina.

Sources in the Border Security Force, which is tasked with guarding India’s borders, said the fencing was an ongoing project and Border Guard Bangladesh, its counterpart across the border, had always been kept in the loop. “Construction of border fencing started last year in April and was proceeding smoothly with the full knowledge and acquiescence of the Border Guards Bangladesh. However, since the change of political power in Bangladesh and the ascent of the Yunus Government, we are seeing objections being raised,” senior BSF officials told The Daily Guardian.

“The fencing work at Sukhdevpur-Sabdalpur village in Malda’s Baishnabnagar started in April last year following established procedure, which also involve Border Guard Bangladesh. BGB, through multiple intimations, communicated their agreement and had no objection when the work began,” said a senior officer of BSF South Bengal Frontier. According to border guidelines, any permanent construction within 150 yards of the Zero Line is restricted by both countries. If any temporary construction has to happen within this territory, there is an established process, and mutual agreement involving both stakeholders is necessary.

“Work continued seamlessly till July, and then BSF temporarily put things on hold during the monsoon. When the force tried to resume fencing in November, BGB objected after four days. After lower-level talks, operations were put on hold for a few days, hoping that our counterpart would be able to see things in the correct perspective,” said the officer. The senior officer said BSF resumed work last week, after waiting for a considerable time. “But there was opposition again from the BGB, and despite flag meetings where we reminded them about their commitments and past permissions, they refused to let us start work. We ultimately had to stop again to avoid escalating tension,” the officer said.

Bengal has a 2,217 km boundary with Bangladesh. Almost half of it remains unfenced, making it vulnerable to illicit cross-border activities. The current dispute is over attempts to put barriers along 1,200m in Baishnabnagar village. The fencing would be in mutual interest as it would help curb transborder crimes and illegal infiltration. The BSF officer said the force was dealing with the issue courteously and exploring all options, but had escalated the matter to the Ministries of Home and External Affairs. “Their objection is not justified,” the officer said.

On Monday, a Ministry of External Affairs release made it clear that India had observed all protocols and agreements between the two Governments on security measures at the borders, including fencing. It said that the same was conveyed to the BangladeshActing High Commissioner to India, Md. Nural Islam, who was summoned by the MEA to the South Block. The release added that it was also conveyed to the envoy that India was committed to ensuring a crime-free border through measures like barbed-wire fencing, border lighting, installation of technical devices and cattle fences. Among cross-border crimes, the release cited smuggling, the movement of criminals and trafficking.

“India conveyed its expectation that all earlier understandings will be implemented by Bangladesh and that there will be a cooperative approach to combating cross-border crimes,” the Ministry release said. This followed Sunday’s statement by the BangladeshForeign Ministry expressing its “deep concerns” at the “recent activities of the BSF along the Bangladesh-India border”. On Sunday, the interim Government in Dhaka had summoned the Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma to the office of Foreign Secretary Md Jashim Uddin. Verma was told the BSF’s “unauthorised attempt” to construct barbed-wire fencing and related operational actions had caused “tensions and disturbances” along the border.

Since fencing began on Friday around Dahagram-Angarpota — the sole Bangladeshi enclave in India — near the Tin Bigha Corridor in Cooch Behar, Bangladesh has been alleging that it violates international law’s prohibition of any construction within 150 yards of the Zero Line (border). BSF officials said that residents of the Indian villages surrounding the Bangladesh enclave of Dahagram-Angarpota had urged the BSF to provide them with security so they could fence the enclave’s boundaries. Located in Mekhliganj, Cooch Behar, the enclave is connected to mainland Bangladesh through the 178m by 85m Tin Bigha corridor.

On Friday, the villagers had begun putting up barbed-wire fencing around the enclave, citing the objective of preventing cattle and Bangladeshi people from entering India illegally. They had secured a 2km stretch — out of a targeted 3.5km — before Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) jawans intervened and stopped the fencing. Residents of Sibrampur in South Dinajpur and Sukdebpur in Malda — where the BSF had to stop fencing the border following objections from the BGB – too have urged the authorities to complete the job keeping in mind the situation in Bangladesh and its current relations with India, the BSF official said.

</excerpt>

Authorities have identified potential infiltration hotspots along the India-Pakistan border and have implemented advanced measures, including the installation of cutting-edge sensors, to monitor and prevent unauthorized access, according to Director General of Border Security Force (BSF) Daljeet Singh Chaudhary.

Speaking at the annual press meet on Friday, the BSF chief detailed the measures undertaken to bolster border security. “Floodlights and cameras have been installed, along with the installation of the Long-Range Reconnaissance and Observation System (LORROS) to ensure effective long-range surveillance,” Chaudhary stated.

He added that patrolling activities are in full swing, with ambushes being strategically set up to intercept potential threats. “Intelligence sources play a key role in executing specific operations aimed at maintaining security. The state government and the Army are working in close coordination to ensure that no infiltration occurs,” he said.

The BSF DG emphasised that personnel are undergoing specialised training and have been meticulously deployed across critical areas with strict instructions to prevent any form of infiltration.

However, he clarified that the data regarding infiltration attempts remain largely based on estimates. “In case any infiltration incident occurs, it becomes apparent that there may have been infiltration in that area. However, there is no definite estimate in this regard,” Chaudhary noted.

The statement comes against the backdrop of several terrorist incidents in Jammu and Kashmir in recent months, coupled with reports of fresh infiltration from Pakistan. Cross-border infiltration remains a persistent challenge, particularly along the Line of Control (LoC) and international borders, where hostile terrain and geopolitical tensions exacerbate the situation.

Over the past years, such infiltration attempts have often been linked to cross-border terrorism aimed at destabilizing peace and security in sensitive regions.

Also read: Asteria Aerospace Delivers AT-15 VTOL Drones to Indian Army for Advanced Surveillance

Highlighting BSF’s efforts, the DG revealed that personnel have successfully neutralised threats posed by drones. “Our personnel have shot down 257 drones on the Western Border till November 30 this year, compared to just 10 last year,” Chaudhary informed.

The BSF, mandated to guard the 3,323-km-long India-Pakistan border, continues to adopt advanced technology and tactical operations to address evolving security challenges and maintain the sovereignty of the nation.

According to a press release from the BSF, the operation was conducted following intelligence reports regarding the presence of a drone in the border area.

The search operation took place in a suspected area around 2:00 PM, leading to the recovery of the drone from a harvested farming field near village Wan. The recovered drone has been identified as a DJI Mavic 3 Classic, which is manufactured in China.

Ongoing Efforts Against Illicit Border Activities

The BSF’s press release emphasized the effective coordination between the BSF intelligence wing and Punjab Police, which resulted in the successful recovery of yet another illicit drone believed to have crossed the border.

This recovery follows a previous operation on Thursday, where BSF personnel confiscated 13 kilograms of suspected heroin in the Tarn Taran border district. The narcotics were concealed in a hume pipe, and the recovery was made based on reliable intelligence regarding narcotics trafficking in the area.

On the same day, BSF troops, in conjunction with Tarn Taran Police, conducted another search operation that resulted in the recovery of an improvised and assembled Pakistani drone, further highlighting the ongoing challenges faced in border security.

According to the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Punjab Frontier BSF, the recovery was made after receiving reliable intelligence about narcotics hidden in a hume pipe in the border area. BSF troops quickly responded and conducted a detailed search of the location.

“At about 12:40 pm, the troops recovered 06 plastic bottles filled with suspected heroin (Gross weight- 13.160 Kg). This recovery, based on intelligence developed by the BSF intelligence wing, took place in a farming field adjacent to village Kalash in district Tarn Taran,” the PRO stated.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of BSF announced the seizure on Friday, attributing the success to a coordinated effort based on intelligence inputs.

Joint Operation Leads to Significant Seizure

The operation, which was launched following a tip-off from the BSF Intelligence wing on October 3, resulted in the discovery of a narcotics packet wrapped in yellow adhesive tape, further secured with blue tape. A steel ring and mini torch were also attached to the package, believed to have been dropped by a drone from across the border.

“Reliable intelligence combined with quick action by the BSF and Punjab Police led to yet another successful recovery of a drone-smuggled narcotics consignment,” the PRO stated.

SAS Nagar Raid Exposes International Drug Syndicate

In a separate development, SAS Nagar Police dismantled an international drug syndicate, arresting two individuals, Sukhdeep Singh and Krishan. The raid led to the seizure of 1.5 kilograms of heroin and revealed links to Afghan handlers operating in Delhi, who are connected to global drug cartels.

Sukhdeep Singh, previously involved in a kidnapping case in 2020 and released on bail in May 2024, was one of the arrested individuals. The Punjab Police said this operation dealt a significant blow to international drug trafficking networks and safeguarded the state’s youth.

The BSF emphasized its commitment to curbing the influx of narcotics across the border and announced its ongoing efforts to strengthen surveillance and operational capabilities to dismantle drug trafficking networks in the region.

</excerpt>

The Border Security Force (BSF) has successfully thwarted an infiltration attempt along the international border in the RS Pura sector of Jammu, recovering a significant cache of weapons in the process.
In a press release, the BSF reported that the incident occurred during the night of September 21-22, 2024, when alert troops noticed suspicious movement near the BSF fence. An intruder was observed approaching the border, prompting the vigilant forces to act swiftly and prevent the infiltration.
The recovered weapons include an AK-47 rifle, two pistols, and various rounds of ammunition, specifically 4 mm and 9 mm magazines.
This latest incident follows another infiltration attempt that the BSF successfully foiled on September 16 in the Amritsar district of Punjab, where security forces engaged a Pakistani intruder. According to BSF officials, the intruder crossed the international boundary around 9:13 PM and advanced towards the border near Ratankhurd village. Despite warnings, he continued his approach, leading the forces to open fire, resulting in his death. During that encounter, the BSF also recovered Rs 270 in Pakistani currency, including a half-torn 10-rupee note.
In a related incident, the Indian Army captured a 35-year-old Pakistani intruder from the Line of Control in the Mendhar sector of Poonch district on Sunday. Identified as Hassam Shahzad, a resident of Tarinote village in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, he was intercepted by troops in the Krishna Ghati sector when he attempted to sneak into Indian territory in the early hours.
Shahzad was found hiding in a burrow close to a river near the Bravo check area, approximately 100 meters inside Indian territory. Security officials reported that Rs 1,800 in Pakistani currency, an identity card, and two mobile SIM cards were recovered from him.

During preliminary questioning, Shahzad claimed he had inadvertently crossed the Line of Control.

The BSF and Indian Army remain vigilant in safeguarding the borders and have reiterated their commitment to thwart any infiltration attempts.

</excerpt>

The Border Security Force (BSF) has requested the Union home ministry to deploy an additional battalion to strengthen its efforts against the increasing threat of cross-border drones carrying drugs and ammunition and to curb infiltration along the Punjab segment of the India-Pakistan border, according to sources.

The BSF at present deploys around 20 battalions to guard the 500-kilometre-long border, with 18 battalions actively positioned along the frontline. The remaining units are stationed at the Attari integrated check post in Amritsar and the Kartarpur corridor in Gurdaspur district.

The drone threat, which emerged around 2019-20, is particularly severe in the border districts of Amritsar and Tarn Taran. A senior BSF officer confirmed that the request for an additional battalion is under “active consideration” by the union home ministry. Atul Fulzele, Inspector General of BSF’s Punjab Frontier, highlighted the shift in drug smuggling methods, with most drugs now being transported into Punjab via drones rather than land routes. Official data reveals that security agencies have recovered over 120 drones along this border so far in 2024, surpassing the 107 drone seizures made in all of 2023.

In addition to bolstering border security, the BSF aims to enhance its presence in riverine areas along the Punjab front, where construction is underway on 48 culverts over the Ravi and Sutlej rivers.

These culverts, equipped with sewage gates and locks, are regularly monitored by BSF patrols. An additional battalion would add approximately 800-900 personnel to BSF’s operational strength, improving surveillance and response capabilities. The force is also seeking more personnel for its intelligence (G branch) operations, which currently cover a 50-kilometre area from the border.

This branch has been instrumental in recovering drones and coordinating with local police and central anti-narcotics agencies to dismantle drug syndicates.

A BSF commander noted the positive response from locals in border areas, who have provided valuable information about drone activity and drug trafficking. In recognition, cash rewards have been distributed to informers in around 50 cases. BSF has also shared the identities of approximately 75 drug smugglers and suspects with the police.

Furthermore, BSF is raising a mounted unit of horse-riding women troops to patrol the front, mirroring the duties of their male counterparts. Recently, it reinforced its presence along the Punjab-Jammu border by deploying additional troops in Gurdaspur to prevent terrorist infiltration from the India-Pakistan border into Jammu via Punjab.

This includes organizing “village coordination meetings” in border villages to garner local support for strengthening security and curbing illegal activities.

The BSF, which oversees security along the 4,096 km India-Bangladesh border, has been holding these meetings with Panchayat Pradhans, Panchayat members, and villagers in the South Bengal frontier areas of Nadia and North 24 Parganas districts of West Bengal. These meetings are conducted within the jurisdiction of Border Outposts under Sector Headquarters Krishnanagar and Kolkata.

Company Commanders from various BSF Border Outposts, including Chauhatia Singamora, Ichamati, Padampur, Ranghat, Madhupur, Mysimpur, Haridaspur, Goalpara, Kaijuri, Jhawdanga, Angrail, and Tentulberiya, have facilitated these discussions. The aim is to “strengthen the relationship between the BSF and local communities,” as stated by the BSF.

During these meetings, the BSF emphasized the importance of local cooperation in maintaining security and preventing illegal activities. Officers encouraged villagers to stay vigilant and report any suspicious behavior. Discussions also included the enforcement of Section 144 of the CrPC during nighttime hours along the border, and the prohibition of unnecessary civilian movement on embankments to avoid security breaches.

Additionally, the BSF informed villagers about the ban on fishing in the border area at night, as it poses a security risk. AK Arya, Public Relations Officer of the BSF South Bengal Frontier and Deputy Inspector General, highlighted that these coordination meetings are part of the BSF’s ongoing efforts to build trust and cooperation with border residents.

Arya noted that the BSF’s initiatives reflect its commitment to winning the support of border communities, thereby enhancing national security and community welfare. He also mentioned that the BSF has increased security measures and is actively engaging with border villagers to raise awareness about the situation in Bangladesh.

</excerpt>

In response to the ongoing law and order issues in Bangladesh, the Border Security Force (BSF) has placed the India-Bangladesh border on high alert for the next 48 hours. BSF Director General Daljit Singh Chawdhary has traveled to Kolkata to closely monitor the situation.

A senior BSF officer confirmed that the heightened alert status is a precaution due to the unrest in Bangladesh. Both the North and South Bengal Frontiers have been directed to increase patrolling efforts. An “Ops alert” exercise is currently underway to ensure effective border control and management.

Since July 18, the BSF has been facilitating the entry of Indian students. The security along the Indo-Bangladesh border has been strengthened to prevent any illegal entry or infiltration.

India shares a 4,096-kilometer border with Bangladesh. Meanwhile, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned, and an interim government is being established, according to General Waqar-uz-Zaman, the Chief of Bangladesh’s Army. He has appealed to the public to maintain peace and cooperate with the Army during this transition period.

The Army Chief has called for an end to the nationwide violence and urged the people to work together to restore order. He also mentioned meetings with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), the Jatiya Party, and Jamaat-e-Islami, along with teachers Afis Nazrul and Jonayet Saki, as reported by Bangladeshi media.

</excerpt>

New Delhi/ Jammu, August 02: In a significant development, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has executed a major reshuffle within the Border Security Force (BSF), repatriating DG BSF Nitin Agarwal and Special DG BSF Western Command Y.B. Khurania to their parent cadres amid reports of large-scale infiltration from Pakistan.

Two separate notifications released by the personnel and training department on Friday confirmed that the Cabinet Appointments Committee approved the home affairs ministry’s proposal for the immediate repatriation of both senior officers.

Nitin Agarwal, a 1989-batch IPS officer from the Kerala cadre, was appointed as the BSF chief last June with a tenure extending until July 31, 2026, or until further orders. However, his term has now been cut short.

Y.B. Khurania, an Odisha cadre officer, was inducted into the BSF in September 2018 as an Inspector General-rank officer. He was promoted to an Additional Director General-rank officer in 2021 and took charge of the Western Command last September. The Western Command is responsible for securing the international border with Pakistan in the Jammu division.

Since 2021, security forces, including personnel from the Indian Armed Forces (IAF), the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), the BSF, and the Jammu and Kashmir Police, have sustained losses of more than 50 personnel in the Jammu region.

The premature repatriation of these top BSF officers highlights the escalating security concerns and the pressing need for strengthened leadership to address the increasing militant infiltrations and targeted attacks on security forces in the area.

</excerpt>

Samba August, 1: In a significant development, the Border Security Force (BSF) successfully thwarted an infiltration attempt on the International Border (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Samba district. A Pakistani intruder was shot dead by BSF troops near the Khora post late Wednesday, officials reported on Thursday.

According to the BSF, the vigilant troops detected suspicious movement across the IB in the Samba border area during the night of July 31 to August 1, 2024. The intruder, who was approaching the BSF fence, was neutralized after ignoring repeated warnings from the personnel.

“In the intervening night of 31 July/01 Aug 2024, the vigilant BSF troops observed a suspicious movement across the IB in the Samba border area. An intruder was observed approaching toward the BSF fence, the alert troops neutralised the intruder & thwarted the infiltration attempt,” the BSF stated.

Senior BSF and police officials promptly reached the incident site, and efforts to retrieve the body commenced. IG BSF, Jammu Frontier, DK Boora, while speaking to media said, “Around 10:15 PM yesterday, our forward duty points observed some movement where a person was trying to intrude through IB from the Pakistan side. When he entered our territory, he was challenged, and when he tried to flee, he was neutralized by our troops. This attempt was likely made to probe for potential gaps… It serves as a lesson that no one can step into India’s territory with ill intentions. If someone dares so, he will meet a similar fate.”

In response to intelligence reports indicating that a group of 40-50 foreign mercenaries were planning such attacks, the Security forces have already started deploying highly trained soldiers. These soldiers, drawn from the elite commando force and trained in mountain warfare, have been stationed in the Poonch, Rajouri, Doda, Kathua, Reasi, and Udhampur districts of the Jammu division.

Security forces are conducting intelligence-based cordon and search operations in these districts almost daily to hunt down hiding terrorists and prevent further infiltration attempts.

Addressing a question about the steps taken by the government to consolidate state efforts in providing modern equipment to the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Rai said that, according to the National Policy on Disaster Management, the responsibility of raising and equipping the SDRF rests with the respective state and union territory governments.

“The Central Government regularly follows up with the State/UT Governments regarding raising and equipping the SDRF with adequate disaster response capabilities. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) also conducts annual capacity building workshops for SDRF, in which this issue is discussed and its need is highlighted. To facilitate the State/UT Governments, the Central Government has also shared the list of disaster response equipment, with the request to equip its SDRF in line with the NDRF,” he added.

Rai further noted that state governments have been advised to use the ‘Preparedness and Capacity Building’ window of their State Disaster Response Fund to equip their SDRFs. Additionally, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) advises states and union territories on raising and equipping their SDRFs.

They are carrying out an “operation alert” exercise to improve border control and management.

Inspector General (IG) of BSF Meghalaya, Harbax Singh Dhillon, highlighted that ensuring the safe return of Indian students studying in Bangladesh is a major concern at present.

Since July 18, the BSF’s Meghalaya frontier has assisted in the entry of 574 Indian students, about 435 students from Nepal, and eight students from Bhutan through the Dawki Integrated Check Post (ICP) in the East Khasi Hills district. Additionally, 18 students crossed through the ICP Kilapara in the West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya on Monday.

IG BSF Meghalaya has instructed BSF officers to provide all possible assistance to Indian nationals, especially students, entering through ICP Dawki and ICP Kilapara. This includes offering drinking water, food packets, and medical aid, and helping them reach their respective destinations. He also mentioned that more students are expected to cross the border due to the ongoing unrest in Bangladesh, which is unlikely to diminish soon.

The officer assured that the BSF will provide all possible assistance to citizens from various countries, especially Indian nationals entering through proper channels. He emphasized that security along the India-Bangladesh border has been strengthened to prevent any infiltration or illegal entry.

</excerpt>

On Sunday, a significant number of students from India and Nepal were evacuated from Bangladesh due to ongoing unrest over a recent Supreme Court ruling that reduced reservation quotas in government jobs. A total of 314 students crossed into India through the Srimantapur and Akhaura Integrated Check Posts (ICPs) in Tripura, bringing the total number of evacuees to 693.

According to a senior official from the Border Security Force (BSF), 152 students entered India through the Akhaura ICP, while 162 crossed via the Srimantapur ICP. The BSF Tripura Frontiers Inspector General, Piyush Purushottam Das, noted that the current unrest in Bangladesh, triggered by protests against the reservation quota reduction, is posing significant security challenges. </excerpt>

In a significant move aimed at integrating ex-servicemen into central armed forces, several agencies including the CISF, BSF, and RPF have announced a special recruitment initiative for former Agniveer soldiers. Under the Agnipath recruitment scheme introduced in June 2022, these forces will reserve 10 percent of constable positions for ex-Agniveers. This initiative is part of efforts to utilize the skills and discipline of former soldiers who complete a four-year tenure.

According to CISF Director General Nina Singh, ex-Agniveers will receive special exemptions in physical tests and age relaxations. The CISF plans to implement this directive in upcoming constable appointments, emphasizing the benefits of integrating experienced personnel into the force.

Similarly, BSF Director General Nitin Agrawal highlighted that ex-Agniveers will receive age relaxations and bring valuable experience and discipline to the BSF. He noted the significance of recruiting individuals with four years of training and service, stating it would enhance the operational capabilities of the force.

Meanwhile, the RPF also announced a 10 percent reservation in future constable recruitments for ex-Agniveers. Director General Manoj Yadava expressed optimism about the contribution of ex-Agniveers, highlighting their potential to infuse new vigor and morale into the RPF.

Opposition parties, including the Congress, have raised concerns about the fate of the 75 percent of Agniveers who may not be retained after their initial tenure. However, proponents argue that the scheme not only supports veterans’ transition into civilian life but also enriches the armed forces with skilled and disciplined personnel.

The move is expected to streamline recruitment processes across these agencies, fostering a mutually beneficial arrangement that supports both veterans and national security objectives.

The recovered drones, identified as China-made DJI Mavic 3 Classic models, were found in separate incidents in farming fields near villages Hardo Rattan and Daoke in Amritsar District.

According to official statements, the joint search operations on April 21 were initiated based on intelligence indicating drone presence in the region. BSF and Punjab Police conducted coordinated efforts leading to the successful retrieval of the drones, highlighting the ongoing vigilance against illicit activities along the border.

These interceptions come in the wake of heightened surveillance efforts, with recent incidents indicating attempts at smuggling contraband across the border using drones. On April 20, a drone carrying three packets of suspected heroin was seized in the Ferozepur border area.

The BSF intelligence wing received specific information about the drone and its payload in Ferozepur District. Subsequent search operations resulted in the recovery of the drone along with the narcotics, weighing approximately 2.710 kg. Additional items, including a torch and an illuminating green-colored small ball attached to the drone, were also found.

Authorities have underscored the importance of intelligence-sharing and swift action in countering such smuggling attempts. The successful recovery of drones and contraband signifies the proactive measures taken by security forces to maintain border integrity and curb illegal activities.

These incidents serve as a reminder of the evolving challenges faced by security agencies, emphasizing the need for continuous vigilance and advanced technological solutions to counter emerging threats along the borders.

Thanks to dependable intelligence and a seamlessly coordinated joint effort between the BSF and Punjab Police, another smuggling attempt of narcotics from across the border has been thwarted. Officials reported that earlier on Thursday, in a collaborative operation, the BSF and Punjab Police recovered a parcel containing suspected heroin weighing approximately 5 kg in Amritsar district, Punjab.

“In a collaborative effort between the Border Security Force (BSF) and Punjab Police, a significant breakthrough was achieved in the fight against narcotics smuggling on March 7, 2024. Acting on specific information provided by the BSF intelligence wing, an extensive joint search operation was conducted in the border area of Amritsar district in the evening hours,” the Border Security Force stated.

In the operation, alert troops successfully seized a sizable packet believed to contain heroin.

“The packet, weighing approximately 5 kgs and wrapped in yellow adhesive tape with a metal hook attached, was found in a farming field adjacent to Neshta Village in Amritsar district,” it added.

The successful recovery of this significant amount of narcotics is credited to the dependable information and coordinated actions of the BSF and Punjab Police. This joint operation has effectively disrupted the malicious endeavor of a drug syndicate from across the border to smuggle a large shipment of drugs into Indian territory.
