</excerpt>

Britain has called on Russia to agree to a complete and permanent ceasefire in Ukraine, dismissing President Vladimir Putin’s recent 30-hour Easter break as a symbolic gesture that lacked sincerity. The UK call comes after warnings from the US of walking away from peace negotiations unless both parties demonstrate genuine commitment to stopping the war.

Though Ukraine is still cautious, citing ongoing Russian shelling, Britain argues that only an indefinite cessation of hostilities can pave the way for serious talks. International friends such as Italy have repeated the call, asserting that temporary suspensions bring minimal relief to civilians or aid workers.

Without substantive action, the world’s trust in Russia’s peace overtures continues to slide.

Putin’s 30-Hour Ceasefire

On April 19, Vladimir Putin made a unilateral Easter ceasefire. It was to go into effect at 6 PM. Moscow time and conclude at midnight on the following day. He invited Ukraine to retaliate. The Kremlin asserted the move would display peace intentions.

Still, the timing has been questioned. Only days ago, the US threatened to pull out of peace talks unless both parties agree to halt fighting. Hence, critics label Putin’s decision as tactical and reactive.

Ukraine Remains Wary

Ukrainian leaders are still not convinced. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated Russia can’t speak peace while conducting attacks. The Russians, according to Ukrainian forces, continued shelling even after the ceasefire was in effect. Therefore, Kyiv was not inclined to suspend its military campaign.

Zelenskyy has also insisted on a complete withdrawal of Russian forces as the prerequisite for peace. Without it, Ukraine finds no reason to believe in Putin’s words.

Britain’s Tough Stand

Britain has reacted firmly. A foreign ministry official stated, “Ukraine has pledged a complete ceasefire. We call on Russia to do the same.” The UK is calling on Russia to demonstrate that it really wants peace.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office further stated, “Now is the time for Putin to demonstrate he is serious.” They emphasized that only a complete ceasefire could lead the way to permanent peace negotiations.

Other Allies Join In

Italy also seconded the UK position. Both countries have advocated for a complete, unconditioned ceasefire. They feel that any pause should result in actual progress—not be a diversion.

While international observers caution that brief pauses provide little respite to civilians, aid workers also indicate humanitarian corridors require longer than one day to function safely.

Prospects: Stalemate or Ceasefire?

The war in Ukraine continues to rage on. With the fighting ongoing, gestures of symbolism stand to lose their credibility. For peace to hold, trust must once again be regained. And for trust, the violence needs to end first.

Unless it does, the world can expect more ceasefire headlines—but less actual peace.

Investigations suggest he could be responsible for up to 50 more assaults. He has been convicted of multiple sexual offenses and is now considered one of Britain’s most prolific rapists.
</excerpt>

Zhenhao Zou, a 28-year-old Chinese man, was pursuing a PhD in engineering at University College London (UCL) when he was revealed as a serial rapist. Zou resided on the 39th floor of a luxurious London apartment, where he was regarded as a charming gentleman by most people. But his nature was much worse. Zou has been found guilty of raping and drugging 10 women, with police estimating that he might have attacked more than 50 other women, making him Britain’s most prolific rapist.

Who was Zhenhao Zou?

Zou was born in Guangdong Province, China, and immigrated to Northern Ireland at the age of 20 to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering at Queen’s University, Belfast. Upon the completion of his undergraduate studies, he relocated to London in 2019 to study for a master’s degree at UCL. During his time in London, Zou’s social life was centered on nightclubs and the Chinese community, and it was here that he started using drugs such as ketamine, ecstasy, and cocaine. He would frequently pick up women from dating sites, invite them to his flat, and rape them after spiking them with drugs.

Zou’s Obsession with Pornography

While under investigation, Zou divulged his inclination towards extreme pornography, such as ‘time-stop’ videos in which women seemed passive and insensate during sex. Zou indicated that he preferred the kind of content in which he got aroused to see women remaining still and quiet during sex. This was his inclination, which translated into action as he used to drug his victims to leave them unconscious.

Details of the Investigation

The inquiry into Zou started in 2023 after a woman reported being raped in Zou’s student flat. Detectives later found horrific evidence, including recordings of Zou raping unconscious women. Zou had videos recording women waking up while being assaulted, some of them even pleading with him to stop. One such video captured Zou dismissing a victim’s plea, saying, “Don’t push me, it’s pointless… The sound insulation here is very good.” Police found large amounts of alcohol, ecstasy, and a chemical that turns into GHB (a date rape drug) in Zou’s flat.

Trophy Box of Victims’ Items

Investigations also revealed a box of personal belongings of Zou’s victims that he had referred to as ‘lost property’. Prosecutors charged that the box was a ‘trophy box’ with memorabilia of his victims. Police believe that, apart from the 10 women Zou was convicted of attacking, more than 50 other women may have been victims of his predatory advances.

Testimonies of Victims

A number of women gave evidence against Zou in the trial. One of the women stated she had met him in 2021 at a restaurant, after which she got drunk and woke up to realize he was raping her. Zou then said that he believed she was aware at that time. One victim told how Zou mocked her after raping her, telling her, “It really hurts.” Several of the videos of the victims had them clearly distressed and powerless to resist as a result of the drugs that Zou had administered.

The investigation was Scotland Yard’s most sophisticated, with police sifting through millions of WeChat messages and reviewing more than 1,600 hours of video. The police suspect Zou’s offenses were committed in both the UK and China, with most of his victims not knowing they were attacked because of the drugs administered. Detective Chief Inspector Richard Mackenzie stated the challenges in dealing with such cases and promised that any additional reports would be handled with sensitivity and care.

Zou’s Convictions

On March 5, Zou was found guilty of drugging and raping 10 women in England and China. He was also convicted of several counts of voyeurism, possession of extreme pornography, false imprisonment, and possession of drugs with intent to commit sexual offences. Zou is now among some of Britain’s most infamous sexual predators, along with Reynhard Sinaga and John Worboys.

Prosecutor Catherine Farrelly KC called Zou ‘a tenacious sexual predator, a voyeur, and a rapist’, adding that he was ‘a wolf in sheep’s clothing’. Zou’s abhorrent behavior has left a trail of trauma, and officials continue to urge victims to come forward and receive support and counseling.

</excerpt>

The COVID-19 pandemic revealed critical vulnerabilities in global healthcare systems, including the United Kingdom’s overreliance on international supply chains for vaccines. Former Health Secretary Matt Hancock has urged the UK to prioritize building its own vaccine manufacturing capability, a move he deems essential for safeguarding public health during future pandemics. Testifying before the COVID-19 inquiry, Hancock stressed the “critical” importance of an onshore vaccine production facility to ensure rapid distribution of life-saving doses during times of global crisis.

The Case for Onshore Vaccine Manufacturing

Hancock, a pivotal figure in the UK’s COVID-19 response, highlighted that while the UK excels in vaccine research, it is comparatively weak in manufacturing doses at the scale required during a pandemic. This gap became particularly evident when global demand for vaccines surged following regulatory approvals. Hancock argued that relying on international manufacturing facilities exposed the UK to geopolitical risks and potential supply chain disruptions, both of which could delay vaccine rollouts and jeopardize lives.

During normal times, the global system for vaccine manufacturing and distribution functions relatively smoothly. However, the pandemic underscored the need for countries to prioritize self-sufficiency. Hancock pointed out that during the pandemic, geopolitical tensions and unprecedented demand for vaccines created bottlenecks that left nations scrambling for limited supplies. “Having that manufacture and fill and finish onshore, physically within the UK, is critical,” Hancock told the inquiry.

Lessons from the COVID-19 Pandemic

The UK was the first country to roll out COVID-19 vaccines, a feat made possible by the development of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine and the timely discovery that the steroid dexamethasone could save lives. These achievements, however, were overshadowed by challenges in ensuring equitable distribution and addressing barriers faced by marginalized communities.

Ethnic minorities, disabled individuals, migrants, and other vulnerable groups encountered obstacles ranging from insufficient information and language barriers to systemic discrimination and vaccine hesitancy. Hancock acknowledged that addressing these disparities would require more than just vaccine availability—it would necessitate inclusive public health strategies and improved community engagement.

Hancock also criticized the European Union for its handling of vaccine distribution, which created additional challenges for the UK. He referenced the spat between the UK and Brussels over access to the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, underscoring the importance of reducing dependence on external manufacturing facilities. “A whole load of our vaccines were still manufactured on the European continent, and that caused us significant problems,” Hancock noted.

Building Resilience for the Future

The call for a sovereign vaccine manufacturing facility aligns with broader efforts to bolster the UK’s pandemic preparedness. As part of these efforts, the government has announced a national pandemic-preparedness exercise, slated for autumn, to test the country’s ability to respond to a global outbreak. The exercise will involve thousands of participants across the UK and is designed to identify weaknesses in the nation’s pandemic response framework.

Beyond the immediate need for vaccine manufacturing capabilities, Hancock emphasized the broader implications for public health policy. Investing in onshore facilities would not only mitigate risks during pandemics but also foster innovation within the biotech sector, creating economic opportunities and strengthening the UK’s position as a leader in vaccine development.

Addressing Equity in Vaccine Distribution

One of the most significant lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic is the importance of equitable access to vaccines and therapeutics. The inquiry revealed that vulnerable groups often faced systemic barriers to accessing vaccines, highlighting the need for a more inclusive approach to public health. Future pandemic strategies must prioritize accessibility and trust-building measures, particularly among communities that have historically been underserved or marginalized.

To this end, public health campaigns must be tailored to address specific concerns and needs. Providing information in multiple languages, partnering with community leaders, and ensuring transparency in vaccine safety are all critical steps toward building trust and ensuring no one is left behind during future health crises.

Economic and Strategic Benefits

The establishment of an onshore vaccine manufacturing facility would also have significant economic and strategic benefits for the UK. By reducing reliance on international supply chains, the country could avoid potential delays caused by geopolitical disputes or export restrictions. Moreover, investing in domestic manufacturing capabilities could drive innovation and create high-skilled jobs within the biotech and pharmaceutical sectors.

Hancock’s call to action reflects a growing consensus among experts that self-sufficiency is a cornerstone of pandemic preparedness. By taking proactive measures now, the UK can position itself to respond more effectively to future health emergencies, ensuring that lifesaving vaccines are readily available to those who need them most.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities inherent in global health systems. Matt Hancock’s plea for the UK to build its own vaccine manufacturing capability is not just a call for greater self-sufficiency—it is a recognition of the need to prioritize public health and preparedness in an increasingly interconnected world. By investing in onshore facilities and addressing systemic inequities, the UK can build a more resilient healthcare system, better equipped to protect its citizens during future pandemics.

As the COVID inquiry continues to examine the lessons learned from the pandemic, Hancock’s testimony serves as a reminder that proactive planning and investment are key to safeguarding public health and ensuring the country is prepared for whatever challenges lie ahead.

</excerpt>

Millions of people were advised to stay indoors as Storm Darragh raged across Britain, forcing thousands off power and into canceling trains by the thousand. The emergency “risk to life” warning was issued at 1am Saturday for areas in Wales and south-west England under a rare red wind warning from the Met Office, it was the biggest-ever issue of the warning system telling people to avoid driving and staying indoors if possible.

At 5 am, more than 12,600 premises in the Midlands and south-west lost power, while over 20,000 homes in Wales were cut off from electricity. The Northern Ireland Electricity Network said it was unable to give restoration times due to widespread faults. National Highways closed the Prince of Wales Bridge, M4, and Severn Bridge, M48, because of high winds, and Network Rail Wales suspended all train services west of Cardiff due to fallen trees.

The Met Office red warning, the most extreme, applied from 3 am through 11 am on Saturday. The coasts and hills of West and South Wales were expected to be gusting up to 90 mph, and the worst winds were forecast to decline by late morning. Mobile phones in the affected regions received an Emergency Alert issued by the Cabinet Office; however, some people reported not getting the alert.

Amber alert went as far south from southern Scotland to Cornwall and all over Northern Ireland until 9 pm. The risk for it was flying debris, trees falling, large waves and significant damage to structures. Flights were rerouted to Dublin, and many flights out of Heathrow had to be canceled as a result of the storm that had hit Britain. Heavy rain is also forecasted, with more than 120 flood warnings in place on Saturday. A yellow rain warning is still in place for parts of Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland.

Transport disruptions continued across the network, with National Rail advising passengers to check their journeys, as services may be cancelled or delayed. Chiltern Railways asked customers to only travel if necessary and announced a reduced timetable, allowing tickets to be used on Sunday, Monday, or Tuesday.

</excerpt>

Virgin Media O2 has introduced Daisy, an AI-powered chatbot designed to combat scams targeting vulnerable individuals. Modeled after a wise and witty grandmother, Daisy engages with scammers, wasting their time and disrupting their operations. This automated process, known as “scambaiting,” involves Daisy answering scam calls and leading fraudsters into lengthy conversations, ultimately reducing the success of scams.

About ‘Daisy’

Daisy was specifically created to impersonate an elderly adult, as older people are often targeted by scammers due to perceived lack of tech-savviness. With her ability to work non-stop, Daisy is a formidable opponent in preventing fraud. As she says in her introductory video, “While they’re busy talking to me, they can’t be scamming you, and let’s face it, dear, I’ve got all the time in the world.”

The AI is designed as a photorealistic elderly woman with grey hair, glasses, and pearls, chatting on a retro pink landline phone. In the video, Daisy engages with scammers, avoiding sensitive personal information while steering conversations toward topics like her cat Fluffy and knitting hobbies. Frustrated scammers are shown becoming irritated by her relentless rambling and false personal details.

Watch Here:

Daisy’s persona is crafted using advanced AI, including a custom large language model that transcribes and responds to callers. Virgin Media O2’s anti-fraud team ensures scammers add Daisy to their contact lists. Her persona, inspired by a real-life grandmother, proves effective in the fight against fraud.

O2 believes Daisy plays a crucial role in both disrupting scams and educating the public about fraud tactics. “By tricking criminals into thinking they are defrauding a real person and playing on their biases about older people, Daisy has exposed common scams and helped protect potential victims,” O2 stated.

Due to her father’s conversion to Roman Catholicism for his marriage, he initially lost his succession rights. However, with the passing of the 2013 Succession to the Crown Act, he regained those rights. Notably, Lady Amelia’s two older siblings were confirmed in the Catholic faith, thereby relinquishing their succession rights. As a result, she is the only heir of her father who retains a place in the line of succession, as explained by Stephanie Petit for People.

</excerpt>

China has accused Britain of ‘espionage,’ alleging that the UK recruited a married couple working for the Chinese government to spy for MI6, CNN reported. China’s civilian spy agency, the Ministry of State Security (MSS), announced it had cracked a “major espionage case” involving MI6, revealing two spies “planted by the British side within our ranks.”

This claim follows recent charges by British police against three individuals accused of spying for Hong Kong’s intelligence service and earlier charges in April against two others accused of spying for China, including a former researcher for a Conservative Party legislator, according to CNN. Additionally, in January, China’s MSS announced it had imprisoned the leader of a foreign consultant alleged to have spied for MI6.

Under Xi Jinping, the MSS has significantly increased its public presence and scope, transforming from a secretive organization into a prominent force in public affairs. Over the past six months, the MSS has made regular public statements about dismantling foreign eavesdropping programs, which, though unverifiable, positively portray the agency and remind Chinese civilians to remain vigilant.

In its latest statement released on Monday, the MSS detailed its allegations against the married couple. It claimed that an alleged spy, identified only by his surname Wang, worked in an important state institution with “access to core confidential information.” According to the MSS, MI6 valued Wang’s access and “swiftly approved” his application to study in the UK under an exchange program in 2015. While Wang was studying in Britain, MI6 allegedly invited him to lunches and trips to discover his “character weaknesses and personal interests.”

The Chinese agency claimed that after learning Wang had “a strong desire for money,” the British espionage agency used an alumnus to lure him into a part-time consultancy job with significant pay. The MSS further alleged that MI6 personnel then approached Wang to work for the British government, promising higher monetary rewards and security guarantees, which he accepted. He received espionage training before returning to China to gather intelligence.

MI6 reportedly pressured Wang to persuade his wife, who worked for a “core” government agency, to join the espionage efforts, promising to quadruple the pay, the MSS claimed. The case remains under investigation.

</excerpt>

Prince Harry participated in a thanksgiving service in Britain on Wednesday to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games. The ceremony, hosted at St Paul’s Cathedral in London, featured Harry, 39, making a rare public appearance in his native country. His solitary presence at the event drew considerable focus due to his strained relations with his family. Currently, Harry resides in California with his wife Meghan and their two children, away from the royal fold.

His recent memoir, interviews, and TV documentaries have contributed to his distancing from other members of the royal family, as he openly criticized both them and the institution itself. Despite briefly reuniting with his father, King Charles, after the announcement of the monarch’s cancer diagnosis in February, there are no arrangements for the father and son to meet during Harry’s current visit to the UK. A spokesperson for Harry, the Duke of Sussex, attributed the missed opportunity to the king’s busy schedule, emphasizing Harry’s understanding of his father’s commitments and priorities. While Harry attended the Invictus Games service at St Paul’s Cathedral, King Charles hosted the inaugural annual garden party at Buckingham Palace, accompanied by other senior royals. Additionally, the king was scheduled to fulfill engagements at a military training base the following day.

Harry’s attendance at the service underscored his singular royal presence, emphasizing his connection to the international sporting event he established in 2014 for wounded military personnel. Arriving at the cathedral unaccompanied, he was welcomed by a crowd outside and slated to deliver a reading during the service. Actor Damian Lewis also took part, reciting a poem to the congregation, which comprised veterans and injured service personnel. After departing from Britain, Harry will be joined by Meghan for a visit to Nigeria, although Meghan did not accompany him on his trip to London.

</excerpt>

Five asylum seekers lost their lives while attempting to cross the English Channel from France to Britain in a heavily packed small vessel on Tuesday, Al Jazeera said.

This occurred shortly after the UK government sanctioned a bill allowing for the deportation of certain asylum seekers to Rwanda.

Departing from Wimereux, approximately 32km (20 miles) southwest of the French port of Calais, the vessel, carrying 112 individuals, embarked on its journey across one of the globe’s most bustling shipping lanes. Despite rescuers managing to retrieve 49 individuals and transporting four to hospital, several others opted to remain aboard the vessel and proceed with their voyage towards Britain.

Local prefect Jacques Billant said, “A tragedy occurred on a boat overloaded with migrants early this morning. We deplore the deaths of five people, a seven-year-old girl, a woman and three men.”

“The engine stopped a few hundred metres away from the shore, and several people fell into the water,” Billant added.

The French coastguard reported that 58 individuals remained aboard, and efforts were ongoing to locate any additional survivors, Al Jazeera said.

“They did not want to be rescued. They managed to restart the engine and headed towards Britain,” Billant said.

According to reports more than 6,000 individuals have reached Britain via small, overcrowded boats, risking perilous conditions and rough waters during their journey.

According to Al Jazeera, the UK government has been striving for two years to secure approval for a contentious plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda. Finally, on Tuesday, the UK parliament passed legislation overnight, paving the way for these deportations. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak anticipates that the first flights could depart in 10 to 12 weeks, allowing time for potential legal challenges from various groups, including charities, campaigners, and unions.

Sunak added that the government’s action stemmed from compassion, aiming to deter people smugglers from endangering vulnerable individuals by sending them out to sea.

“They are packing more and more people into these unseaworthy dinghies. You’ve seen an enormous increase in the numbers over the past few years,” he said. “This is what tragically happens.”

According to Al Jazeera, under the Rwanda scheme, individuals arriving in Britain irregularly after January 1, 2022, will be relocated to Rwanda, approximately 6,400 kilometers (4,000 miles) away.

Official figures indicate that more than 50,000 individuals have arrived in Britain since that date. However, on Tuesday, the United Nations refugee agency and the Council of Europe urged the UK to reconsider its plans, expressing concerns that the bill could undermine international cooperation in addressing the global migration crisis.

</excerpt>

Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, made the claim on Monday that his strategy to “stop the boats” of illegal migrants arriving at British shores is working when he announced plans to house them on ships to alleviate pressure on hotels funded by taxpayers.

In an interview at the bordertown of Dover in Kent, Sunak said the primarily such boat will be prepared later this month and two others to oblige a further 1,000 transients.He mentioned that important legislation known as the “Stop the Boats Bill” or “Illegal Migration Bill” has passed the House of Commons and will enable his government to detain and deport migrants who enter the country illegally.

Sunak stated, “I promised we would get illegal immigrants out of hotels and into alternative locations, including military facilities.” We will also house people on ships to ease the burden on local communities. The principal will show up in Portland in the following fortnight. Additionally, we have secured two more today that can hold an additional 1,000 people, he stated.

Wethersfield and Scampton will also get large new sites. Hundreds of migrants are expected to move in over the next few months, and there will be room for about 3,000 people by the end of the year. Sunak said that other than adding elective convenience choices, not entirely settled to utilize inns.

The British government is facing flak from the opposition and Conservative MPs over their plans to scrap EU-era laws copied over to UK law after Brexit. Unless specifically kept or replaced, much of the legislation will automatically expire after December.

It has raised worries that significant laws would unintentionally expire. Labour party claims that delaying the end-of-year deadline until 2026 will guarantee the preservation of job rights. Additionally, several Conservative backbenchers, including former Brexit secretary David Davis, support a move to give MPs more control over what gets dropped.

To minimise the impact on companies when the U.K. formally left the EU in 2020, the government identified more than 2,400 pieces of EU legislation that have been incorporated into UK law to make the transition smooth.

The National Archives has unearthed another 1,400 unidentified laws. This increase in number has raised concerns about the workload on the civil service to review all those legislations. The ministers would be gaining wide-ranging powers to change or get rid of EU laws, prompting criticism that important changes in a wide range of areas could be made without proper scrutiny.

The deadline is not applicable to EU legislation governing financial services since such laws have been specifically excluded from another measure moving through the Commons. The same is anticipated for EU regulations that impact customs and VAT.

Although the UK government has not yet released a breakdown, some EU legislation applies to areas in Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland that are overseen by ministers. Both the Welsh and Scottish governments, which are led by the SNP, have expressed reservations about the plan and asked their respective legislatures to hold off on passing it.

Some Brexiteers are pressuring Prime Minister Rishi Sunak not to modify the end-of-year timetable after he made the promise to examine or repeal EU regulations within 100 days of assuming office during his failed leadership campaign in the summer.

On Wednesday, the House of Commons will conduct the bill’s final phases. Then it will go before the House of Lords, where it is anticipated to encounter strong opposition.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Monday delivered his first major address on UK Foreign Policy. He emphasized the importance of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with India that aims to strengthen the domestic economy.
This occurs as India and the UK continue their FTA negotiations, which started in January of this year and are intended to advance their trade and investment relations. Currently, both nations actively engage in bilateral trade as part of a multifaceted strategic cooperation.
“By 2050, the Indo-Pacific will deliver over half of global growth…compared with just a quarter from Europe and North America combined. That’s why we’re joining the Trans-Pacific trade deal, the CPTPP, delivering a new FTA with India, and pursuing one with Indonesia,” Sunak said in his address at the Lord Mayor’s Banquet at London’s Guildhall.
Regarding the second-largest economy in the world, Sunak argued that the “golden period” between Britain and China is “now finished” and that it is time to change the country’s policy towards it because its authoritarian government poses a systemic threat to UK values and interests.
Along with outlining his foreign policy views, he attacked China’s violations of human rights.
“Let’s be clear, the so-called ‘golden era’ is over, along with the naive idea that trade would lead to social and political reform. We recognise China poses a systemic challenge to our values and interests, a challenge that grows more acute as it moves towards even greater authoritarianism,” the UK PM said in his address.
Sunak also expressed support for Ukraine in his speech, adding that the UK is standing with the nation that has been devastated by war. He claimed that in order to address issues like security and immigration, Britain is also reviving its ties to the European Union.
The continuous demonstrations against COVID lockdowns in China have the UK Prime Minister worried. Sunak emphasised that the BBC correspondent was recently detained in China and claimed that the Chinese government “had opted to crack down more” as opposed to paying attention to the public’s concerns.

Britain recorded the highest temperature on Tuesday and braced for the warmest day, speculated to be 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit).

The Met Office has predicted the temperature to rise by up to 41 degrees Celsius in a few parts of England, which would make the country hotter than the Maldives and Jamaica.

Experts have warned the country to prepare for more intense summers in the future, as well as the need to adapt homes for deadly summers. The transport routes across England and Wales are also said to be affected by the heatwave, according to National Rail, and people have also been advised to travel only if “absolutely necessary.”

Network Rail stated, “There will be delays, cancellations, and last-minute changes to train services due to the unprecedented record heat on those days.”

The transport secretary, Grant Shapps, has stated that resolving rail issues during heatwaves will take decades. He also mentioned that it might take years to upgrade the rail infrastructure to be more resilient.

He said, “There’s a long process of replacing it and upgrading it to withstand temperatures that are either very hot or sometimes much colder than we’ve been used to, and these are the impacts of global warming.”

There have also been warnings about hospital overcrowding as a result of the extreme temperature rise, and there are concerns that ambulance services will receive more calls as the heat peaks on Tuesday afternoon.
