However, Singh still faces separate sexual harassment charges from six other wrestlers.
</excerpt>

In a major turn of events, a Delhi court on Monday filed the police closure report suggesting the cancellation of the sexual harassment case lodged by a minor wrestler against the former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The move is the official culmination of one of the most sensational and high-profile allegations that wounded the heart of India’s wrestling community.

Additional Sessions Judge Gomti Manocha accepted the closure after the complainant, a central figure in the countrywide protests, appeared in court on May 26. Interestingly, during an in-chamber hearing last year, the complainant had already told the previous judge that she was satisfied with the probe and did not oppose the closure. 4.1-mini

Fabricated Complaint Led to Closure

On June 15, 2023, the Delhi Police submitted the closure report invoking the father’s confession that the complaint had been false. He confessed that the accusation was made to take revenge on personal grounds for what he felt was injustice meted out to his daughter. According to the report, there was “no corroborative evidence” to support the charge and therefore suggested that the POCSO case should be withdrawn.

This turn of events not only exonerates Singh in the particular case in question against a minor but also brings into question more substantive questions regarding abuse of sensitive legal provisions and long-term consequences of baseless allegations.

Separate Allegations Still Underway on Brij Bhushan

Even with the closure of this case, Brij Bhushan Singh is still caught up in serious legal complications. He continues to face sexual harassment allegations in another case brought by six other female wrestlers. These allegations are ongoing and may have serious repercussions.

As the legal chapters unfold, the wrestling fraternity — and society at large — will closely watch. Although the closure is a relief for one side, the pending cases indicate that Singh’s legal battle is far from over.

</excerpt>

Former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president and BJP leader Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has once again dismissed the allegations of sexual harassment leveled against him by six female wrestlers, calling it a “Congress conspiracy.” Speaking at a public event in Gonda, Singh reiterated his earlier claims, stating, “When the allegations were made against me, I said that this is a conspiracy of Congress, Deepender Hooda, and Bhupendra Hooda. I have said this earlier, and today the country is saying it. Now, I do not need to say anything about this.”

Singh, who has consistently denied the accusations, has previously alleged that Congress leaders were behind the charges. He also claimed to possess audio clips that could prove the conspiracy.

The sexual harassment allegations against Brij Bhushan Singh were made by six female wrestlers, prompting high-profile protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. Among the protesters were Olympic medallists Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik, along with World Championship medallist Vinesh Phogat, who demanded Singh’s removal from his position as WFI president.

In response to the controversy, the BJP revoked Singh’s ticket for the Kaisarganj seat, which he had represented until 2024. The party has since nominated his son, Karan Singh, to contest the seat.

The case has sparked widespread attention, with many calling for thorough investigations and justice for the athletes involved.

</excerpt>

Two individuals, including a 17-year-old, lost their lives in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda today when a Toyota Fortuner SUV collided with a bike. The SUV is associated with the convoy of Karan Bhushan Singh, BJP candidate for the Kaiserganj Lok Sabha seat and the son of six-time MP and former wrestling figure Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh garnered national attention after being accused of sexual harassment by top wrestlers in the country. Recently, a Delhi court pressed charges against him in the case. These allegations purportedly influenced his exclusion from the electoral ticket this time. Instead, the BJP nominated his son Karan, who also has ties to wrestling administration. His other son, Pratik Bhushan Singh, currently serves as MLA from the Gonda seat.

Footage from the accident scene displays the SUV labeled with “police escort” on the rear windshield, indicating its association with a VIP convoy. The vehicle, with the registration number UP32HW1800, is reportedly linked to the Nandini Nagar educational institute operated by Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh’s family.

As per the FIR, the complainant Chanda Begum reported that around 9 am today, her 17-year-old son Rehan and 24-year-old nephew Shahzad were riding a bike to purchase medicines when the speeding SUV from the opposite direction collided with them. Both individuals succumbed to their injuries on the spot. A 60-year-old woman identified as Sita Devi sustained injuries and is undergoing treatment at the hospital. Following the accident, a large crowd gathered at the scene as the victims’ families demanded justice.

The driver has been apprehended, and the SUV has been confiscated by the police. It remains unconfirmed whether Karan Bhushan Singh was present with the convoy during the accident. Senior police officer Radheysham Rai stated that the victims’ bodies have been sent for autopsy, and investigations are ongoing.

Farman Khan, a relative of the victims, recounted arriving at the scene to find blood on the road and the youths being taken to the hospital. He mentioned that local residents informed them about Karan Bhushan Singh’s convoy passing through and the Fortuner colliding with the bike. “When we went to the hospital, doctors told us our children are dead. Please get us justice. We cannot think,” he pleaded.

</excerpt>

Expressing confidence in his son Karan Singh’s victory in the Kaisarganj Lok Sabha seat, despite facing sexual harassment allegations from female wrestlers, Brij Bhushan Singh stated that these accusations would actually garner more votes for their party.

“We will get more votes owing to those allegations,” Singh told reporters in Kaisarganj on Monday, emphasizing, “There is only one issue in Kaisarganj, that is Brij Bhushan Singh.”

The BJP strongman used a wrestling metaphor to predict his son’s win, asserting that Karan Singh would secure victory “by fall” in the elections. “He will be winning by fall… Karan Bhushan Singh will work better than me. He is known for his mannerisms, way of talking, discipline, and exercise. He is a sportsperson as well. All of us stay in the village and our children have been brought up well,” Singh praised his son.

Singh also expressed confidence in the Narendra Modi government’s return to power with a significant majority despite various “distractions.” “PM Modi’s government will come to power with an overwhelming majority. There have been many distractions, but it will have no impact on the electoral results,” he asserted.

Singh cast his vote at a polling station in Kaisarganj on Monday. Speaking to ANI, he predicted that his son, Karan Singh, would be elected with double the number of votes he received in the 2019 elections. “This time people of Kaisarganj will bring him to power with double the number of votes secured last time. After winning, he will be judged as per his actions,” Singh stated.

Reflecting on his future plans, Singh said, “Life is not like rail tracks. Life is like the course of a river which changes its course. I will do what is in my fate.”

Phase 5 of Lok Sabha Elections

Voting for the fifth phase of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections 2024 is underway across 49 parliamentary constituencies spread over six states and two Union Territories (UTs) under tight security. Simultaneously, polling for 35 assembly constituencies of the Odisha legislative assembly is also taking place on Monday.

This phase features key contests with leaders such as Rahul Gandhi, BJP leaders Rajnath Singh, Smriti Irani, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Piyush Goyal, Ujjwal Nikam, Karan Bhushan Singh, LJP (Ramvilas) chief Chirag Paswan, JKNC chief Omar Abdullah, and RJD leader Rohini Acharya vying for electoral success.

The eight states/UTs participating in phase 5 are Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.

</excerpt>

By replacing incumbent MP Brij Bhushan Singh with his son Karan Bhushan Singh for the Kaiserganj Lok Sabha seat, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) keeps the electoral competition within the family, underscoring the significant influence of the six-time Member of Parliament.

The 67-year-old BJP stalwart was omitted from the ticket list for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections due to allegations of sexual harassment leveled against him by six women wrestlers. These athletes had staged prolonged protests against him last year. Earlier this month, a Delhi court ruled that charges should be brought against him.

Voting for the Kaiserganj seat is scheduled for the fifth phase on May 20. It encompasses five Vidhan Sabha seats: Payagpur, Kaiserganj, Katra Bazar, Colonelganj, and Tarabganj.

Brij Bhushan Singh’s son Karan Bhushan Singh is contesting against Samajwadi Party candidate Ram Bhagat Mishra, who is the elder brother of Shravasti zila panchayat president and former BJP MP from Shravasti, Daddan Mishra. The Bahujan Samaj Party has nominated Narendra Pandey for the seat.

Karan, the younger son of Singh, aims to maintain the family’s stronghold on the seat, given his father Brij Bhushan’s six-time victory there, while his mother Ketaki also served as a former MP from Gonda. Furthermore, Brij Bhushan’s elder son, Prateek, has been an MLA from Gonda twice.

In the 2019 elections, Brij Bhushan Singh secured 5,81,358 votes, defeating the BSP candidate who garnered 3,19,757 votes.

The Thakur leader mentioned that his son, Karan Bhushan Singh, has gained considerable support in Kaiserganj and neighboring districts.

Prior to the party’s announcement, Brij Bhushan expressed confidence that the BJP would nominate him again for the seat. He stated that there was a 99.9 percent likelihood of him contesting the seat.

“I am not a candidate right now. But the BJP has no contest on the Kaiserganj Lok Sabha seat. Last time, victory was won by more than 2 lakh votes; this time, the workers have given a slogan of 5 lakh votes. If God has decided this, what can I do? But I am a strong contender, so I will contest 99.9 per cent, 0.1 per cent would remain.”

In addition to Kaiserganj in Uttar Pradesh, the constituencies of Amethi, Lucknow, Mohanlalganj, Hamirpur, Jalaun, Jhansi, Banda, Fatehpur, Kaushambhi, Faizabad, Barabanki, Raebareli, and Gonda will also go to the polls on May 20.

</excerpt>

Delhi’s Rouse Avenue court defers “framing of charges” in sexual harassment matter, which was levelled by six women wrestlers against Brij Bhushan Singh.

Further, the court has fixed May 10 for the pronouncement of the order.

Earlier too on April 18, the court deferred on charges framing against Singh after the application filed by BJP MP.

In his application, Singh wanted permission to keep further arguments on the framing of charges. He also sought direction for inquiry regarding his presence at the WFI office on September 7, 2022.

However, on April 26, the court later dismissed the plea under which he demanded further investigation into the sexual harassment case.

Meanwhile, the counsel appearing for the complainant argued that there is a strategy at play for causing the delay of application. Also claimed that documents could have been sought at the section 207 level of the CrPC.

This development comes around the time, when just last month, Delhi Police filed a charge sheet against Singh under sections 354, 354A, 354D and 506 (1) (criminal intimidation).

But a closure report was also filed under POSCO which was lodged against Brij Bhushan by a minor.

</excerpt>

The Rouse Avenue court reserved its order on Thursday regarding an application by Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) Chief, related to allegations of sexual harassment made by six female wrestlers against him. The court will announce its decision on April 26.

Singh has requested the court to admit the call detail records (CDRs) of coach Vijender as evidence in relation to an alleged incident at the WFI office in New Delhi. He has also asked for an investigation into his travel document, claiming he was in Serbia on September 7, 2022, and not in Delhi as alleged.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Priyanka Rajpoot reserved the order after hearing arguments and requested related judgments from both parties. The matter was at the stage of deciding on the application of the accused before proceeding with framing charges.

Additional Public Prosecutor Atul Srivastav argued that the defense should have raised all points during the initial arguments. He also mentioned that analysis of the CDR indicated the coach was in the same area as the WFI office on the date in question.

Advocate Rajiv Mohan, representing Singh, highlighted the victim’s travel history and the need to verify the CDR and travel documents. The complainant’s counsel viewed the application as a delay tactic, emphasizing that the incident occurred at the WFI office.

The court questioned the timing of the application and the delay in raising these points earlier. The defense emphasized the importance of the CDR and travel documents in establishing an alibi for Singh.

The court also considered whether the application for CDR and further investigation could be entertained at this stage. The defense argued for the importance of the CDR as corroborative evidence.

The victim alleged that she visited the WFI office with coach Vijender on September 7, 2022. Singh claims he was in Serbia on that day and has provided his passport as evidence. However, the coach’s CDR has not been submitted.

In the ongoing case of alleged sexual harassment against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) Chief MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the complainant women wrestlers have submitted written pleadings regarding the framing of charges.

The charges in the sexual harassment case, which involves allegations made by six female wrestlers against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, are currently being debated in the Rouse Avenue court.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Harjeet Singh Jaspal has set December 6 as the date for the Prosecution to file written submissions, allowing parties to present additional written responses to counterarguments. Singh, the accused, had previously submitted his written arguments during the previous court session.

On October 30, the court urged parties to go beyond oral arguments, emphasizing the importance of structured and systematic written compilations to effectively conclude the arguments.

In recent hearings, the defense counsel contended that the court lacked jurisdiction to try offenses allegedly committed outside India without proper sanction under Section 188 CrPc. Additionally, arguments were presented suggesting that the alleged offenses spanned locations such as Tokyo, Mongolia, Bulgaria, Jakarta, Kazakhstan, and Turkey, making it challenging for this court to try the case.

The defense referred to incidents in 2022, specifically involving Bulgaria and the WFI office, and questioned why these incidents were not reported to the oversight committee at the time.

Addressing the issue of whether sexual harassment can be deemed a continuing offense, the Additional Public Prosecutor argued that the accused’s actions were persistent, occurring whenever an opportunity arose, and should not be viewed as isolated incidents. The defense cited a 1993 Supreme Court judgment asserting that offenses committed abroad could still be tried in India, further contributing to the ongoing legal discourse.

</excerpt>

Former Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh claimed on Monday that the case against him for alleged sexual harassment is now in court and will be heard soon.

“I do not want to comment on this as it is now under the court’s consideration. The matter is in the court, and the court will do its work,” Singh told reporters.

Singh’s remark came after the protesting wrestlers announced to withdraw their protest against him, stating that the government has fulfilled its promise of filing a chargesheet against the Chief of WFI, a six-time BJP MP whom they have accused of sexual harassment.

Top wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, in a few similar tweets stated that the fight will now be fought in court, not on the roads. Malik took to Twitter on Sunday to state that the “battle will now be fought in court and not on roads till justice is delivered.”

The tweets posted by 3 main wrestlers reads “As per the talks held on June 7, the government has implemented our demands. The Delhi Police on June 15 had submitted before the court the chargesheet after conducting a probe into allegations of sexual harassment (against former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh), on the basis of an FIR filed by six women wrestlers. Now, the fight will continue in court and not on roads till justice is delivered.”

They also stated that they will wait for new WFI elections, which the government has promised will take place on July 11.

“The process for fresh Wrestling Federation of India election has begun. The polls are scheduled to be held on July 11 as promised by the government. We will wait for the implementation of the promise,” the wrestlers said.

Since the beginning of the year, Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, and Vinesh Phogat have been organising rallies against Singh for alleged sexual harassment. After being removed from their Jantar Mantar protest site on May 28, the grapplers suspended their demonstration till June 15 after Union sports minister Anurag Thakur informed them that a chargesheet will be filed against BJP MP Singh.

Amid the ongoing protests by ace wrestlers at Jantar Mantar, wrestlers can reach Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur’s residence at 6 p.m. for the second round of the talk.

Earlier in the day, Olympian wrestler and 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Bajrang Punia on Friday appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur to hear their demands.

“We’re sad that the athletes have to sit here in protest leaving their practice. Our fight is only against the Wrestling Federation of India. We appeal to the PM, HM, and Union Sports minister to hear our demands. WFI has given this fight a political turn,” Punia said.

Earlier in the day, over allegations of sexual harassment of women wrestlers Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, is under pressure to step down. But Singh dismissed all the claims and said will “expose the political controversy” in a press conference on Friday.

Amid the ongoing protests by ace wrestlers WFI chief Singh refuted reports claiming that he had met with Amit Shah and said, “I am not heading this federation by the grace of any person, I am an elected head. I have not had a talk with anyone yet. I will address a press conference later today. 300 athletes from Haryana have arrived here.”

Even after meeting with Union Minister Anurag Thakur at his residence on Thursday, wrestlers ended their meeting on an undecisive note on Friday morning and started their protest again on Jantar Mantar at 10 a.m.

Meanwhile, for the third consecutive day wrestlers will continue their protest even after giving written assurance by Anurag Thakur to wrestlers and two demands have been accepted in the meeting.

The protest was also joined by Boxer Vijender Singh who said, “I have come here to meet the wrestlers today.”

Earlier on Thursday, the sports ministry asked Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh to resign from his WFI chief post

Moreover, WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh is to hold a press conference on Friday at the Wrestling Training Centre in Nawabganj in Gonda district, Uttar Pradesh.

WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh said, “He will expose political conspiracy today in the press conference.”

According to the sources Home Minister Amit Shah also spoke to WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

Earlier on Wednesday, wrestler Vinesh Phogat alleged that coaches who are favorites of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) harass the women.

Wrestler Vinesh Phogat also accused the wrestling federation chief, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, of calling her ‘khota sikka’ and sexually harassing girls.

However, a Lok Sabha MP from the BJP, Brij Bushan Singh, is heading the Wrestling Federation of India.
