Only Bomb Capable of Striking Iran’s Deep Nuclear Facilities

<excerpt>As Iran-Israel tensions escalate, experts highlight the U.S.-built GBU-57 as the only bomb capable of reaching Iran’s fortified Fordo nuclear site. The 30,000-pound weapon can penetrate 200 feet underground and is deployable only by the U.S. B-2 stealth bomber.
</excerpt>

As the rhetoric heats up between Israel and Iran, eyes have fallen on the GBU-57, a high-powered U.S.-designed bunker-buster bomb that the experts claim is the sole conventional weapon with the capability to penetrate to and destroy Iran’s deeply buried nuclear facilities like Fordo.

With a weight of 30,000 pounds (13,607 kg), the GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator is designed to penetrate up to 200 feet (61 metres) underground before exploding. Even though Israel has pledged to prevent Iran from building nuclear weapons, the sophisticated bomb is not in its inventory.

Reports say that the United States’ former President Donald Trump is weighing whether America should intervene in the current conflict between Iran and Israel. There was a recent National Security Council meeting where officials debated a possible strike on Iran’s Fordo nuclear facility, a buried enrichment facility where uranium is enriched.

Addressing the G7 Summit in Canada, Trump announced, ‘Iran will not win’ in this battle and called on Tehran to come back to the negotiating table ‘before it’s too late’.

Why Only the GBU-57 Can Reach Fordo

Though recent Israeli attacks have struck some Iranian military assets, analysts consider Fordo to be unscathed because of the extreme depth. “All eyes will be on Fordo, buried under roughly 300 feet of rock in central Iran,” said Behnam Ben Taleblu, director of the Iran program at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD).

He went on to say, “In less than a week, the regime’s missile inventories, launchers, bases, production sites, nuclear experts, military command and control has been very severely battered.” Nevertheless, he said that doubts persist regarding how potent Israel’s attacks have been against the essence of Iran’s nuclear program.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) verified Fordo was not damaged. Unlike other sites like Natanz or Isfahan, Fordo’s rock shielding renders it resistant to routine airstrikes.

Mark Schwartz, a retired U.S. Army lieutenant general and Rand Corporation researcher, remarked, “Only the United States has the conventional capacity” to obliterate Fordo. He explained that by this capacity he meant specifically the GBU-57 bomb.

What Sets the GBU-57 Apart

The GBU-57, or Massive Ordnance Penetrator, is unique in that it can penetrate hard rock and fortified buildings. As reported by the U.S. military, the bomb burrows as deep as 200 feet before detonating—making it the perfect tool for destroying underground installations.

Masao Dahlgren, a missile defense analyst with the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), described, “In order to engage these deeply buried targets, these weapons must be hardened with relatively heavy steel casings of hardened steel to essentially blast through these layers of rock.

The 6.6-metre bomb also features a dedicated delayed-action fuse. “You have to have an explosive that won’t detonate right away under that kind of shock and pressure,” Dahlgren said.

The GBU-57 was in development in the early 2000s, and Boeing was contracted to deliver 20 units in 2009.

Just One Aircraft Can Carry the GBU-57

At the moment, only the American B-2 stealth bomber can carry the GBU-57. Satellite photos from Planet Labs showed that B-2s were deployed at the UK-US base in Diego Garcia in early May, though they were ‘no longer visible by mid-June’, AFP reported.

Dahlgren said, “With their range, B-2s flying out of the United States can go all the way to the Middle East to make bombing runs. That’s been done before.

Two GBU-57s can be carried on each B-2 bomber, and it may take more than one bomb to achieve maximum impact. Military strategist Peter Schwartz noted that, with current Israeli air superiority over Iran, “They’re not going to just be one and done,” so it makes it more practical for U.S. bombers to get to Fordo and strike multiple times.

Briefly, the GBU-57 is the sole conventional weapon with the depth-penetration capability to hit Iran’s most heavily defended nuclear installation, placing it in the middle of future military planning should the United States opt to intervene.

Local authorities acted swiftly, and the Indian Air Force secured the area. Rajasthan’s CM called a high-level emergency meeting.
</excerpt>

A suspected, bomb-like device was found on Friday morning in the Kishanghat area of Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer district, just a few hours after Pakistan conducted drone and missile strikes along India’s western frontier, a PTI report said.

The Indian Air Force acted quickly after a local resident reported the object. The region was sealed immediately, and army bomb disposal experts were called in to examine and defuse the suspected bomb.

Initial reports from the local police indicate that the object seems to be a component of a drone supposedly fired by Pakistan on Thursday evening at about 10:30 pm. An official confirmation, however, is awaited. “It is not yet known whether it is live or destroyed,” Kotwali SHO Prem Daan informed PTI.

Local resident Arjun Nath found the item close to a nursery in the Jogis’ colony, opposite Kishanghat in the kotwali police station’s jurisdiction. He informed Kalyan Ram, a member of the region’s sarpanch, who approached the authorities in turn.

Pakistan Targets Indian Cities

In a retaliatory attack on Thursday night, Pakistan launched a new series of missile and drone strikes that targeted to strike Indian army camps in Pathankot, Jammu, and Udhampur. The attacks were after India carried out precision bombings against terror outfits in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Pakistan last month as part of ‘Operation Sindoor’.

Indian troops successfully repelled the attacks, which were aimed at a number of strategic points in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat. The defence ministry states that, “The Pakistani military on Thursday night tried to target Awantipura, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Adampur, Bathinda, Chandigarh, Nal, Phalodi, Uttarlai and Bhuj.”

Operation Sindoor: India’s Retaliation

India’s missile attacks on Wednesday were a direct reaction to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that left people dead. India’s military struck nine terror hubs across PoK and Pakistan in a high-accuracy operation that proved its strategic prowess and determination.

As temperatures rose along the western frontier, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma summoned a high-level meeting to assess the situation and enhance the state’s readiness, ANI said.

As part of emergency steps, the state government suspended leaves for the entire staff deployed in the border regions and redeployed administrative officials to fill any vacancies in the sensitive sectors.

Police say she had a criminal history and are investigating possible ties to far-left extremist groups after the early morning blast.
</excerpt>

A 38-year-old woman was killed in the early hours of Saturday when an explosive device exploded in her hands in Thessaloniki, a northern Greek city.

Police suspect that she was trying to place the device on an ATM outside a nearby bank at about 5 a.m. when the explosion happened. “It seems that she was with an explosive device and was going to place it a bank’s ATM,” a senior police official said to Reuters. “Something went wrong and detonated in her hands,” the official said.

The explosion damaged several storefronts and passing vehicles, police said.

Police indicated the woman had prior contact with the authorities for taking part in a string of robberies. Detectives are now investigating whether or not she was connected to militant left-wing groups.

Authorities increased patrols, involved cybercrime experts, and coordinated efforts with Delhi police for preventive measures.
</excerpt>

Mumbai police have ramped up security measures across the city after receiving a social media warning about possible communal violence, arson, and bomb blasts during Eid on March 31 and April 1. The message specifically mentioned potential incidents in Dongri, allegedly instigated by “illegal Rohingya, Bangladeshi, and Pakistani infiltrators.”

According to reports from news agency PTI, the warning was flagged by the Navi Mumbai police after the message was posted on social media, tagging their official handle. Upon being alerted, Mumbai police took immediate action, intensifying security in key locations, increasing patrolling, and deploying additional personnel from the Crime Branch, the Anti-Terrorism Squad, and the special branch. So far, no suspicious activity has been reported.

Cyber Cell Investigates Source of Threat

The cyber cell has launched a technical investigation to trace the individual responsible for the social media warning. The Navi Mumbai police responded to the message by requesting the sender’s contact details for further verification and inquiry.

Similar Warning Issued to Delhi Police

The same person reportedly issued a similar warning to the Delhi Police and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, claiming that illegal immigrants could trigger riots or bomb blasts in Chandni Chowk, Jama Masjid, and Jahangirpuri during Eid. The message also tagged the Delhi and Uttar Pradesh police, though neither department has publicly responded to the warning yet.

Delhi Police had already intensified security measures for Eid celebrations and the last Friday prayers in the eastern district. Authorities have ensured that additional forces are patrolling sensitive areas, and strict monitoring is in place to maintain law and order.

The authorities continue to assess the credibility of these warnings while urging citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.

The incident occurred after a crew member discovered a note in the plane’s toilet claiming there was a bomb on board.

In response to the threat, authorities were immediately notified, and the airline is fully cooperating with security agencies to conduct thorough checks. A Vistara spokesperson emphasized that passenger, crew, and aircraft safety is their top priority.

The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, which had departed Mumbai at 1:02 p.m., landed safely in Erzurum at 7:05 p.m. Passengers were evacuated and provided refreshments while bomb disposal experts examined the aircraft. The airspace over Erzurum was temporarily closed during the investigation.

This incident follows two previous bomb threats involving Vistara flights. On June 28, a flight from Thiruvananthapuram to Mumbai received a similar threat, which was later confirmed to be a hoax. Another Vistara flight from Paris to Mumbai faced a bomb threat on June 2, which was also determined to be false.

Manoj Kumar, 42, was scheduled to fly from Kochi to Mumbai on Air India flight AI 682. While passing through the X-ray Baggage Inspection System (XBIS), Kumar asked a CISF officer if there was a bomb in his bag.

This comment triggered an immediate response, with the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) conducting a thorough inspection of both his cabin and checked baggage. No threat was found, but Kumar was removed from the flight and handed over to local police for further investigation. The flight proceeded as planned.

Airports take any mention of threats, such as “bomb” or “hijack,” very seriously. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security emphasizes that even joking about such threats can lead to significant delays and fines. It is important to avoid making statements like “I have a bomb in my bag,” as these are considered serious offenses and are strictly against the law.

A similar incident occurred in June when a passenger on the Kochi to London Gatwick Air India flight was arrested for making a bomb threat, which was later confirmed to be a hoax. Shuhaib (30) from Malappuram, made the threat in a call to Air India’s customer care after his request to reschedule due to his daughter’s food poisoning was denied.

Security measures have been intensified at all airports, including Cochin, through August 20 in preparation for Independence Day celebrations. Travelers are advised to arrive early to accommodate longer processing times and ensure a smooth journey amid heightened security.

A hoax bomb-threatening call was made to Bengaluru’s Vidhana Soudha claiming that there was a bomb in the building. A 41-year-old man from Bengaluru’s electronic city was arrested for making the hoax call.

At 2:05 pm, the individual, who goes by the name Prashanth KV, called the chief secretary’s office to report that an explosive device had been placed at the Vidhana Soudha. Police officers at the Vidhana Sodha started a search and made the local security forces aware of the situation. However, it was eventually discovered that the call was a hoax, and the caller was charged.

Within a short time, the suspect was apprehended and taken to jail by the court. Additionally, it has been said that Prashanth’s mental health has not been great. After two marriages and a divorce, he even recently abandoned his IT career.
