While the airport cites a bomb threat, the airline claims it was denied landing permission. Conflicting reports raise questions over flight LH752’s sudden u-turn.
</excerpt>

A Lufthansa flight headed to Hyderabad from Frankfurt made an unexpected mid-air u-turn on June 15. The flight, LH752, was operated by a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. It had taken off from Frankfurt at 2:15 pm local time. The plane was scheduled to land at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport around 6 am IST.

Lufthansa Says No Landing Permit, Airport Cites Bomb Scare

Initial reports did not confirm why the aircraft returned to Germany. However, a report has now revealed that the cause was not a technical glitch, but a suspected bomb threat. According to the report, an official from Hyderabad airport confirmed that the threat was received while the plane was still outside Indian airspace. Hence, prompting the decision to return.

But Lufthansa has provided a slightly different version of events. A spokesperson for the airline said, “We did not receive a permit to land in Hyderabad and that’s why the aircraft took a u-turn and returned.”

Meanwhile, Hyderabad ATC had earlier acknowledged the aircraft’s mid-air change in course, noting that it had received notification of the flight’s u-turn shortly after departure.

British Airways Flight Also Returns Due to Technical Glitch

On the same day, a British Airways flight from London to Chennai was also forced to return to Heathrow. This flight reportedly faced a “flap failure,” a mechanical issue with part of the aircraft’s wing. British Airways clarified that it was a standard precautionary measure. “The flight landed safely, with passengers and crew disembarking normally,” the airline confirmed, assuring that all passengers would be rebooked soon.

Aviation officials stressed that neither Lufthansa nor British Airways declared emergency landings. Returning to the origin airport is a standard protocol in both technical and security-related situations.

As investigations continue, the true cause behind Lufthansa’s unexpected u-turn, whether a bomb threat or denied clearance, remains the subject of speculation.

Security agencies conducted extensive checks but found nothing suspicious. Authorities later confirmed it was a hoax, causing temporary panic before declaring the sites safe.
</excerpt>

Panic set in sections of Delhi on Thursday (April 10) when two iconic locations the Red Fort and Jama Masjid were under bomb threats, officials reported. The security agencies hastened to carry out a full-scale investigation into the threats.

The Delhi Police said, “Red Fort and Jama Masjid received bomb threat call. According to Delhi Police, nothing suspicious was found during the check and the call was declared as hoax.”

The call was received at 9:03 AM, with the unknown caller saying bombs had been placed at the historic sites. In response, several police units, bomb disposal teams, and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel were immediately deployed to the two locations.

A Delhi Fire Services official confirmed, “The security agencies (were instructed) to rush to the places and make thorough checks on Thursday morning.” He further added, “We rushed one fire tender at the location and made thorough searches. But nothing suspicious was detected at the locations.”

Subsequently, Delhi Police later clarified in a statement that bomb disposal squads and CISF conducted thorough searches on the premises but detected no indication of explosives or any other object of suspicion. The whole drama was ultimately authenticated as a hoax.

The whole incident, despite being a hoax, triggered an immediate and integrated response from the security forces in Delhi, establishing the city’s readiness in response to such exigencies.

</excerpt>

A bomb threat letter found on a Jeddah-Ahmedabad flight triggered an extensive security operation at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Monday morning, police confirmed. No suspicious items have been discovered so far.

The threat note was located under a seat after all passengers had disembarked, prompting immediate action by security forces. Local police, the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS), and other agencies conducted a thorough sweep of the aircraft.

Sharad Singhal, Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime Branch, told PTI, “A flight from Jeddah landed in Ahmedabad this morning. Once passengers had exited, the cleaning staff discovered a note threatening to blow up the aircraft.”

Authorities are conducting fingerprint and handwriting analysis to identify any potential suspects. “We are examining the handwriting and fingerprints of each traveller, but so far, nothing suspicious has surfaced,” an official added.

A rise in hoax bomb threats

This incident comes amid a surge in hoax bomb threats targeting various establishments across India.

On February 7, a prestigious college and two schools in Delhi-NCR received bomb threats via email, prompting large-scale security responses. Explosive disposal teams and dog squads conducted thorough searches before authorities confirmed the threats were baseless.

Similarly, on February 4, two private schools in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were evacuated after receiving bomb threats via email, disrupting examinations before officials ruled them as hoaxes. Earlier this month, four schools in Noida also faced similar threats, causing panic before security personnel deemed them false alarms.

Authorities have since registered cases against unknown individuals responsible for these threats. With such incidents on the rise, security agencies remain on high alert, actively investigating the origins of these hoaxes to prevent further disruptions.

</excerpt>

Air India flight declared emergency after Mumbai-London flight received bomb threat. On the same day, five Air India flights besides two Vistara and two IndiGo flights were also exposed to bomb threats, in addition to a series of threats airlines have faced this week.

The aircraft was ‘squawking 7700,’ the indication a general emergency by the pilots. According to the website FlightRadar24, the Boeing 777 took off from Mumbai at 7:05 AM IST and went round over East England before declaring an hour ahead of the scheduled landing time at Heathrow Airport in London at 12:05 PM UK time.

As per the latest updates on FlightRadar24, the aircraft is no longer ‘squawking 7700’ and has landed safely at Heathrow. This code alerts nearby Air Traffic Controllers to the aircraft’s situation.

This bomb threat pattern has now continued for four days running and now impacts at least 20 flights. The threat came when a Vistara flight, which was coming from Frankfurt landed, and as it was received via social media, the crew went for immediate security checks. A spokesperson from Vistara said, “Vistara flight UK 028 operating from Frankfurt to Mumbai on 16 October 2024 was subject to a security threat received on social media. All relevant authorities were immediately informed.”. The aircraft safely landed at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai and it was evacuated to the isolation bay from where all customers had disembarked. The company is fully cooperating with the security agencies to complete the mandatory security checks. “Safety and security of our customers, crew, and aircraft are always paramount at Vistara”.

Meanwhile, an IndiGo flight from Istanbul to Mumbai also received a bomb threat and was isolated for a security check. The airline confirmed: “Flight 6E 18 operating from Istanbul to Mumbai received a security-related alert. The aircraft was isolated upon landing, and all passengers were evacuated safely.” It is cooperating closely with the relevant authorities, following standard operating procedures.

The Centre and civil authorities are coordinating to tackle the situation that is developing further into the crisis. The Home Ministry has sought a detailed report from the Civil Aviation Ministry regarding the incidents. The DGCA would prepare a report with input from the airlines about bomb scare incidents.

This fact led to a Parliamentary Standing Committee being summoned and followed by a meeting with Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu along with the DGCA officials. The Minister claimed, “We are closely monitoring the situation and ensuring that we are committed to maintaining the highest security standards; passenger safety remains our topmost priority.”.

According to sources, there have been proposals of measures to deal with such cases. Some of them are adding those making bomb threats in a flight to the ‘Unruly Passengers’ list. Airlines have proposed a five-year flying ban for offenders and also stated that offenders should be made financially liable for damages incurred on false pretences of bomb threats.

Names of people responsible for making hoax calls will be passed on to the airlines and security agencies, with the Civil Aviation Ministry planning to soon issue a revision of the guidelines. The Ministry of Home Affairs has also asked the CISF to remain extra vigilant at all airports.

A Vistara spokesperson confirmed that flight UK 028 received a security threat through social media, prompting immediate notification of relevant authorities as per standard protocol.
Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu expressed serious concern about these disruptive acts, condemning them as “mischievous and unlawful.” He emphasized the potential threat to aviation safety and operational integrity. Naidu also noted that Mumbai Police have arrested a minor linked to bomb threats against three flights, assuring that efforts are underway to identify and prosecute others involved.

Air India also noted that it and other airlines have recently been subjected to several threats, which were later determined to be hoaxes. However, the airline emphasized that all threats are taken seriously as part of its safety measures. “The inconvenience caused to passengers is deeply regretted,” the statement read. Air India is fully cooperating with authorities to identify those responsible for the threats and is considering legal action to recover the damages incurred.

The threat specifically targeted an Air India flight from Mumbai to New York (AI 119), prompting immediate action from authorities.

Details of the Threat

At 3:30 a.m., Air India received two messages on social media platform X, allegedly from a user named Fazluddin Nirban. The posts claimed that the flight, VT-AER AI 119, was carrying 6 kg of RDX along with six terrorists onboard and was set to be hijacked. The message read, “This flight will be hijacked in the next 20 minutes and will be blown up in the sky. Today India will cry. Pakistan Zindabad.”

The Bomb Threat Assessment Committee (BTAC) quickly declared the threat as “specific,” and the Air India flight was immediately diverted to Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in Delhi, where it landed at around 4 a.m.

Upon landing, all 239 passengers and 19 crew members were thoroughly screened, and the entire aircraft was searched. Usha Rangnani, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) at Delhi Airport, confirmed that no suspicious items were found onboard. “Following standard security protocols, a thorough inspection was conducted, and no suspicious items were found,” she said.

Air India issued a statement, ensuring passengers that their safety was the airline’s top priority. “The flight has been rescheduled to the morning of October 15,” said an Air India spokesperson, who also added that passengers were provided refreshments and would be moved to hotels after security checks were completed.

Indigo Flights Also Receive Threats

In addition to the Air India flight, two Indigo flights operating from Mumbai to Muscat and Jeddah were also targeted with similar bomb threats. The aircraft were moved to isolated bays, and mandatory security checks were conducted. No suspicious items were found in these instances either, according to an Indigo spokesperson.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the origin of these social media threats, which have since been removed from the platform.

Recently, Indian intelligence agencies have been on high alert due to a video that has heightened their concerns. The video, which surfaced on Telegram about three weeks ago, features terrorist Farhatullah Ghori, currently residing in Pakistan, urging sleeper cells in India to target trains nationwide. This alarming development has caused significant anxiety among security forces.

Farhatullah Ghori’s Background

Farhatullah Ghori, also known by aliases such as Abu Sufiyan, Sardar Saheb, and Faroo, is linked to numerous high-profile attacks. His involvement includes the 2002 Akshardham temple attack in Gujarat, which resulted in over 30 deaths and 80 injuries, and the 2005 suicide bombing at the task force office in Hyderabad. Indian authorities have identified him as a key figure in jihadi recruitment and terrorist operations, with previous reports indicating his role in organizing jihadi activities online.

The Video and Ghori’s Threats

In the video, Ghori discusses various methods for executing bomb attacks, including the use of pressure cookers, and calls for attacks on petroleum pipelines and Hindu leaders in India. He criticizes the Indian government’s efforts to disrupt sleeper cells through agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), asserting, “The Indian government is weakening the sleeper cells by targeting their properties through the ED and NIA, but we will come back and shake the government.”

Connections to the Rameswaram Attack

The Rameswaram cafe attack on March 1, 2024, resulted in approximately ten injuries. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested Abdul Mathin Ahmed Taha and Musavir Hussain Shajib, who are accused of masterminding the attack and placing the IED, respectively. Both individuals were apprehended from a lodge near Kolkata while using false identities. They are alleged members of the Islamic State (IS) module based in Shivamogga, Karnataka. Farhatullah Ghori and his son-in-law, Shahid Faisal, have established a robust network of sleeper cells in South India, with Faisal having direct connections with the accused in the Rameswaram attack.

</excerpt>

On Friday, Assam police initiated extensive search operations following a claim by the banned insurgent group United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) that they had planted 24 bombs across the state in conjunction with Independence Day celebrations.

Police officials reported that bomb squads conducted thorough searches and recovered several suspicious items resembling bombs. Fortunately, no explosions occurred at any of the locations.

The situation was triggered after ULFA-I purportedly sent an email to multiple media outlets, which then disseminated the information, causing widespread panic among residents. The email detailed specific areas where the purported bombs were supposedly planted, including two locations in Sibsagar and Lakhimpur, and one each in Lakuwa (Dibrugarh), Laluk, Borghat, Nagaon, Nalbari, and Tamulpur, with eight locations in Guwahati.

Additionally, the group claimed to have placed bombs at five other sites in Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, and Sarupathar, although exact locations were not specified. The group attributed the failure of the devices to detonate to “technical issues.”

In a statement from ULFA-I’s publicity wing, it was mentioned that the blasts were intended to occur between 6 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Independence Day but did not happen due to technical failure. The group urged the public to locate and deactivate the bombs.

Assam Police Chief GP Singh reported on X that suspicious items were discovered by the bomb disposal squad at two locations in Guwahati. These items, lacking ignition devices, are being sent for forensic and chemical analysis. Similar items were also found and safely disposed of in Lakhimpur, Sibsagar, Nalbari, and Nagaon.

An investigation into these incidents is currently underway, Singh added.

Previously, Patna Airport also received a bomb threat via email, resulting in increased security measures. Fortunately, no incidents occurred, and the authorities were quick to respond.

In July, bomb-making materials, including 35 live cartridges, a box of potassium nitrate, trifluralin liquid cans, wooden charcoal, and twine, were discovered in a Patna residence. The police arrested a suspect, Pawan Mahto, and are investigating the potential conspiracy behind the large cache of explosives.

The police acted swiftly to prevent a major incident, and the Bihar Police are taking the current threat to the Chief Minister’s Office very seriously, with all security agencies treating the matter with utmost gravity.

Panic spread through a private school when its administration received a bomb threat email on Friday around 12:30 am. The police were alerted, and the bomb and dog squad conducted a thorough search.

The email claimed that bombs were also planted at two additional private schools in south Delhi and was signed off as being sent by a Pakistani General, according to the police. The boy was apprehended on Saturday, having used a relative’s email account to send the threat, the police said.

The police also conducted searches at the other two schools but found nothing suspicious at any of the locations. During questioning, the boy admitted that he sent the bomb threat to his school using a relative’s email ID because he did not want to attend school the following day, an officer stated.

The boy was brought before the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) and has been sent to a juvenile home, the officer added. A case has been registered, and further investigation is ongoing, according to the police.
