</excerpt>

A 33-year-old man from Bengaluru, identified as Jimit Jain (name changed), has taken a billing error at McDonald’s to court, seeking a Rs. 2 crore compensation for “mental distress” after being mistakenly charged for a chicken burger instead of the vegetarian French fries he ordered.

The incident occurred at the McDonald’s outlet in Lido Mall, Ulsoor, where Jain and his nephew placed an order for vegetarian French fries. However, the restaurant’s billing system mistakenly charged him for a non-vegetarian McFried Chicken Burger (MFC), which was priced higher. Upon noticing the error, Jain raised the issue with the staff, who apologized and offered Rs. 100 as compensation for the inconvenience.

Despite the quick apology and compensation, Jain demanded a formal apology from McDonald’s, which was not provided. The situation escalated, and Jain filed a non-cognisable report (NCR) with the police and sent an email to McDonald’s. After receiving a response, Jain pursued legal action, taking the matter to consumer court and seeking Rs. 2 crore for the alleged “mental distress and public humiliation.”

In its defense, McDonald’s argued that the complaint was baseless, emphasizing that the billing mistake was an honest oversight and that the issue had been resolved promptly with an apology and the Rs. 100 offer, which Jain refused.

The Bangalore Urban II Additional District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission dismissed Jain’s case, ruling that the minor billing error was swiftly corrected and did not affect Jain’s dietary preferences. The court concluded that such an error did not warrant a multi-crore compensation claim.

</excerpt>

An American cyclist, William Hoesch, 71, from Rainier, Oregon, is suing an ambulance service after being struck by one of its first-response vehicles. Following the accident, the ambulance took Hoesch to the hospital, where he was billed for the injuries he sustained in the collision. Hoesch has filed a lawsuit against Columbia River Fire & Rescue, seeking $997,000 in damages.

The incident, which occurred in October 2022, happened as Hoesch was cycling down a semi-residential street in the same direction as the ambulance. While attempting a right turn onto another road, the ambulance collided with him, destroying his bicycle. The collision took place near the Columbia River Fire & Rescue station in Rainier, as the ambulance was returning from a previous trip. According to Penn Live, Hoesch sustained multiple injuries, including a fractured nose and abrasions on his body.

Attorney Travis Mayor revealed that Hoesch was stretchered onto the ambulance and transported to the hospital, where he was billed $1,862 for the ride. This expense added to Hoesch’s other medical costs from the crash, which included $47,000 already paid and an estimated $50,000 in further costs.

The lawsuit argues that Columbia River Fire & Rescue has failed to provide him with any compensation for these damages. Hoesch hopes his motorist insurance will cover the costs. According to a police report, Hoesch estimated his speed at the time of the collision to be between 8–16 km/h and stated he had no warning that the ambulance would turn in front of him. The ambulance, which had two occupants, was reportedly moving at a speed of 3–16 km/h when it hit him.

The ambulance driver stopped to check on Hoesch, who was found injured on the ground with his bike crushed under a wheel. In addition to medical expenses, Hoesch’s lawsuit seeks an additional $900,000 for “pain and suffering” due to decreased range of motion and grip strength resulting from his injuries.

</excerpt>

The bill to increase the number of judges in the Pakistani Supreme Court may be introduced in the National Assembly (NA) next week, as reported by ARY News on Friday, citing sources.

The ruling government is currently facing internal disagreements regarding the proposed legislation aimed at expanding the Supreme Court’s bench from 16 to 23 judges, including the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP). Due to this lack of consensus, the decision has been made to delay the bill until next week, according to sources familiar with the matter.

It is anticipated that the bill will be presented in the House once an agreement is reached. Barrister Danyal Chaudhary from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) introduced the bill. To facilitate its approval, the duration of the NA session, originally set to conclude on Tuesday, has been extended until Friday. Additionally, amendments to the Practice and Procedure Act are also being discussed, as per ARY News.

On Thursday, the Sindh High Court (SHC) issued notices to the Cabinet Division and the Ministry of Law and Justice concerning two constitutional petitions that challenge the validity of the 26th Constitutional Amendment. This amendment, which was previously passed by the government, aimed to revise the appointment process of the CJP and set the tenure for the position at three years.

The Pakistan Senate approved the 26th Constitutional Amendment Bill with a two-thirds majority on October 20, according to ARY News. Although the bill intended to ensure expedited justice, it faced significant opposition, particularly from Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which held protests claiming that the legislation would undermine judicial independence.

The bill comprises 27 clauses and includes proposed amendments to various articles of the Constitution. An amendment suggested by the Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) has been incorporated, despite the party’s initial protests against the bill, which were later resolved through negotiations with the ruling government.

</excerpt>

A chartered accountant from Pune, Priti Jain, made news after securing a three-night stay at a luxurious Marriott resort in Uttarakhand using only her credit card points, spending nothing out of pocket. Jain accumulated 58,000 reward points on her American Express Platinum card after spending Rs 4 lakh, which she then converted into Marriott Bonvoy points—the loyalty program of Marriott International. Marriott Bonvoy points are redeemable for hotel stays and various travel experiences, and they can also be purchased based on demand.

Jain revealed on X that the hotel provided her with a complimentary upgrade. On the first day, she was moved from a standard room to a premier room, and for the next two days, she enjoyed an executive suite. Describing her experience, she said, “feeling like royalty,” adding that the suite’s typical price exceeded Rs 90,000 per night.

She detailed her luxurious experience, highlighting that Marriott offered complimentary breakfast, hi-tea, and a Ganga aarti every evening on the deck overlooking the river. “There was live music, great food, and an overall relaxing experience for guests,” Jain remarked.

The booking required 25,000 Marriott Bonvoy points, which Jain transferred from her AMEX rewards during a promotional 30% bonus offer. By utilizing the 58,000 AMEX points she accumulated, Jain secured a stay originally valued at Rs 1.5 lakh. With the suite upgrade and complimentary meals included, the total value amounted to nearly Rs 3 lakh, which she described as “an incredible deal.”

Last month, another credit card enthusiast shared a similar story. He took his family to the luxury JW Marriott lodge in Masai Mara, Kenya, for five nights without spending anything. The vacation, valued at Rs 27.5 lakh, was entirely covered by his accumulated reward points.

</excerpt>

A recent Reddit post featuring a restaurant bill from 2007 has ignited conversations about the increasing prices of food and drinks over the years. The bill, from a restaurant named “The Supper Factory,” showcased a variety of dishes priced as low as INR 180, totaling just INR 2,522 for ten items.

The caption accompanying the photo stated, “Found 2 bills from 2007 bar visits in Delhi. Man, I can’t believe prices of food and alcohol have jumped up so much since then.” However, not everyone shared this nostalgic sentiment.

Social Media Argues

Many users responded skeptically, arguing that even in 2007, INR 2,500 was not particularly affordable. One user commented, “18 saal pehle 2500 were not that much pocket friendly bhai” (2,500 wasn’t that affordable even 18 years ago, man). Another added, “18 saal…, 2007 feels like 7-8 saal to me” (18 years… wow, 2007 feels like just 7-8 years ago to me).

Another user quipped, “Bro, it’s like saying 7k is pocket friendly in today’s time.” This sentiment reflected doubts about the affordability of dining out nearly two decades prior. One user also praised the original poster for maintaining the bills, saying, “Can we all just for a moment appreciate OP for his extreme care of bills. It’s 17 years, brother!!!!! Moreover, how the hell is that ink still so much intact??? What kinda sorcery is this??”

In the midst of the light-hearted exchanges, one user provided insight into inflation, noting, “Considering inflation, this is around Rs. 7,850 in 2024, so I do understand OP’s point.”

</excerpt>

The introduction of the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024 has sparked a nationwide movement within the Muslim community.
It’s crucial that this movement remains authentic and isn’t co-opted by any external forces.
While the increased engagement in the democratic process is encouraging, there is a need for vigilance as some elements with vested interests are influencing the discourse negatively.

The government’s proposal of the Bill has elicited strong reactions, which quite understandably many are attributing to political motivations.
Opposition leaders are actively advocating for the Muslim community, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on the floor of the house has made a statement that the intention of introducing the Bill is in the interest of the Muslim community.

In this backdrop it is important to approach this situation with a degree of trust and open dialogue. The movement advocating for necessary amendments has, for the most part, been constructive.
However, there are attempts to make the Bill as a communal issue, which is counterproductive.

Some concerning posts are emerging on social media, where certain anti-social elements are attempting to instill fear and create panic among the community.
Claims are being made that the Bill would lead to the government taking control of numerous mosques and graveyards.
Calls to oppose the Bill by changing WhatsApp display pictures such as ‘I reject Waqf Bill’ and social media statuses are becoming prevalent.
Such actions may not serve the best interests of the community and could instead foster a negative perception.

The law already exists since 1913/1923 in the British era and it has been codified in 1954, 1995, and 2013. Primarily the system functions under Central Waqf Council, Waqf Boards in respective states and the Waqf Tribunals.

Syed Akhter Mahmood, former IRS who drafted the 2013 amendment bill believes that there are certain provisions in 2024 Bill which should not be there. But there is also a need to improve the already existing provisions such as maintenance of Waqf property websites.
He says there are many recommendations from the 2013 Bill which have not been implemented and if considered by the JPC could make the implementation easy. There is a need for affirmative action and constructive dialogue.

Efforts to downplay the necessity of the Waqf reforms and present them as an attack on Muslims needs proper application of mind.
The debate over the Bill in Parliament highlighted differences between BJP and Opposition members, resulting in a significant discussion on various provisions.

Despite reassurances from Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, dissent persisted.
To address these concerns, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla established a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) led by MP Jagadambika Pal to review the Bill and solicit public input. MP Jagadambika Pal is a seasoned leader who has vast political experience.
This initiative has garnered substantial feedback from the Muslim community, reflecting a largely positive response. Notable leaders, including Najeeb Jung, Lt. Gen Zameeruddin Shah, and Zafar Mahmood, have contributed their views to the Committee, showcasing constructive engagement.

Additionally, videos encouraging community members to participate by submitting their suggestions to the JPC have been widely circulated and have generally fostered a positive democratic engagement. Despite this, misinformation about the Bill continues to proliferate on social media.

There are definitely many points which need the Government’s reconsideration but outright rejection of the bill without even understanding it properly would be highly inappropriate.
The encouraging news is that many Muslims have individually submitted their suggestions via email to the Committee. However, figures like Zakir Naik have used their platforms to incite strong opposition against the Bill, which should be approached with high caution.
It is essential that the engagement with the government remains direct and free from the influence of vested interests.

To get more clarity the fundamental question the Muslim community must address is whether the current Waqf management system is functioning effectively.
Historically, the system has been plagued by corruption and mismanagement, with significant misuse of Waqf properties.

There are more than 50 Waqf properties which have issues of conflict with the Archeological Survey of India. While the management is being handled by the Waqf Boards, the maintenance and protection has been ASI’s responsibility since 1914.
Understandably the priority of the Waqf Boards had been to generate income for social work from the properties by allowing commercial activities, ASI’s mandate has been the restoration and protection of these properties from any further damage.

These conflicts have remained unresolved since decades. While the Waqf initiated commercial interests are important to take care of the needy, we should not also ignore the fact that these monuments and properties also have a heritage value.
There is a need to take a rational view in consultation with the governments or the courts of law wherever the parties have gone into litigation. Pendency of court cases has been another major issue.

Waqf remains the third-largest landowner in India, after Defence and Railways. If managed properly, this resource could have greatly benefited the community.
Past experiences, such as those with the Shah Bano and Ram Janmabhoomi cases, illustrate the pitfalls of being swayed by rhetoric.

As participants in a democracy, it’s crucial to navigate the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024 with a clear, rational approach. And iron out the differences.
The movement surrounding it should be directed positively to avoid it becoming another missed opportunity.

Advocate for your rights through civil means, but ensure that the movement is not manipulated by external agendas.

-> That should just be an official process in any democracy. Love it … haha pic.twitter.com/0C4T4DbbSU

— Lord Bebo (@MyLordBebo) May 17, 2024

The incident took place only days before President-elect Lai Ching-te is scheduled to assume office on Monday. Lai won the January election, but his Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lacks a majority in the legislature, according to Reuters.

The Kuomintang (KMT), the main opposition party, holds more seats than the DPP but lacks enough to independently control the parliament. Consequently, they are collaborating with the smaller Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) to advance their shared objectives. The opposition aims to grant parliament increased authority to scrutinize the government’s actions, which includes a contentious proposal to penalize officials for falsehoods uttered in parliament.

Prior to the voting, certain lawmakers engaged in shouting matches and physical altercations outside the legislative chamber. Inside, the parliament floor descended into chaos, with lawmakers rushing towards the Speaker’s seat, leaping onto tables, and restraining colleagues on the floor. Further skirmishes ensued throughout the afternoon.

According to Khaleej Times, a lawmaker was hospitalized after sustaining head injuries from falling off a platform.

The DPP accused the KMT and TPP of attempting to push through proposals without adequate consultation, labeling it “an unconstitutional abuse of power.” DPP lawmaker Wang Mei-hui, representing the southern city of Chiayi, stated, “Why are we opposed? We want to be able to have discussions, not for there to be only one voice in the country,” reported Reuters.

Jessica Chen of the KMT, representing the Taiwan-administered Kinmen islands near China, contended that the reforms aimed to enhance the legislature’s oversight of the executive branch. </excerpt>

President Joe Biden signed a bill on Wednesday that could lead to the ban of TikTok in the United States as soon as next year.

After several attempts over the years, both the US House of Representatives and the Senate successfully passed a measure requiring TikTok to separate from ByteDance, its Chinese parent company, within a year, or else face a nationwide ban. This legislation was included as part of a larger foreign aid package aimed at providing assistance to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, making it challenging for some lawmakers to oppose it. Providing aid to Ukraine has been a central focus of Biden’s agenda since Russia’s invasion in 2022, and last week, he publicly supported the aid package.

Interestingly, Biden’s response on Tuesday evening to the Senate vote did not mention TikTok whatsoever. Instead, he chose to emphasize the $95 billion in foreign aid incorporated into the bill.

“Congress has passed my legislation to strengthen our national security and send a message to the world about the power of American leadership: We stand resolutely for democracy and freedom, and against tyranny and oppression,” Biden said.

“This unconstitutional law is a TikTok ban, and we will challenge it in court. We believe the facts and the law are clearly on our side, and we will ultimately prevail. The fact is, we have invested billions of dollars to keep US data safe and our platform free from outside influence and manipulation,” a TikTok spokesperson said in a statement on Wednesday. “This ban would devastate 7 million businesses and silence 170 million Americans. As we continue to challenge this unconstitutional ban, we will continue investing and innovating to ensure TikTok remains a space where Americans of all walks of life can safely come to share their experiences, find joy, and be inspired.”

On Wednesday, the company’s CEO, Shou Zi Chew, posted a TikTok referring to the bill as a ban.

“Congress passed a bill that the president signed into law that is designed to ban TikTok in the United States,” Chew said. “Make no mistake, this is a ban. A ban on TikTok and a ban on you and your voice.”

Previously, the Chinese government has indicated its disapproval of a sale and has implemented export controls on the company’s algorithm.

</excerpt>

BRS leader K Kavitha has been raising the issue of the Women’s Reservation Bill to increase the representation of women in the Parliament.

She said in Parliament on Wednesday that “the women’s Reservation Bill should be immediately brought. It will also help increase women’s participation in Parliament. For this, we are organizing a round table meeting. Those who support this bill are called today. We are trying to put pressure on the government to pass this bill. We have requested Congress to participate”.

Further, she slammed the central government, saying, “Whoever speaks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi is called and questioned. It is wrong, everyone has the right to ask questions. They (BJP) first raided business houses and tried to control them, then they tried to control political parties”. “We will fight,We have not done anything wrong. Whenever we will be called by them (ED) we will go and answer,”.

To introduce the Women’s Reservation Bill in the ongoing budget session of Parliament, the BRS MLC also went on a hunger strike on Friday in Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. Earlier today, the Supreme Court agreed to list K Kavitha’s plea against the ED summons to her in the Delhi excise police case, on 24 March.

However, the apex court refused to grant her any interim relief in the matter. Kavitha was questioned by the ED on 11 March in connection with the case. She will be again summoned by the ED on 16 March in the matter.

In response to the NCP leader’s allegation, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde stated that people come to the CM’s residence from all over the state for work and are served tea and water.

Shinde went on to say that he does not know that a huge number of people come here every day. Should we not give them tea or water, because it is in our culture? We don’t feed biryani.

A high-level meeting was organised on Sunday by the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi ahead of the Budget session in the state assembly. Senior Aghadi leaders such as Ajit Pawar, Aditya Thackeray, Chhagan Bhujbal, Ambadas Danve, Jitendra Awhad, Anil Parab, and others participated in the meeting.

The meeting was organised to make a strategy for the alliance before the start of the Budget Session of the Maharashtra assembly beginning on Monday.

The opposition has been saying that government departments are replete with idle files and that the state government is not paying attention to the common man.

Ajit Pawar has demanded that Maharashtra, like Bihar, conduct a caste-based census. The opposition said that if the Bihar government can conduct a census, then why not the Maharashtra government.

Reacting to Uddhav Thackeray’s statement amid the possibility of a mid-term poll in the state, Pawar added, “The demand was raised earlier to hold the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections simultaneously, and there is a possibility of it in 2024.”

</excerpt>

MP Binoy Viswam introduced a private member’s bill in the Rajya Sabha on Saturday.

It is expected to be introduced and discussed during the forthcoming winter session of Parliament under the name “Criminalization of Marital Rape Bill, 2022.”

CPI MP Binoy Viswam said, “The Bill aims at criminalising marital rape by substituting Exception 2 of Section 375 of the Indian Penal Code with the consent of the survivor for sexual intercourse shall not be presumed based on the marital status, previous conduct, clothing, sexual history, class, or any other previous social attribute of the female partner.”
“The Bill states that the marital rape exception in the existing law violates the fundamental rights of women by commodifying their bodies for their husbands,” Viswam said.
He further read out the statement and objective of the Bill as: “In a country where sexual violence within families is still a taboo, any attempt from the state to protect and preserve the institution of marriage at the cost of women’s subjugation goes against the principles of a civilised nation and everything it stands for. It is pertinent and necessary to remove this exception and insert a non-presumption clause to this law as it is a violation of a woman’s bodily rights in their daily life and criminalisation of marital rape is need of the hour.”

According to him, the new article will guarantee women’s bodily autonomy and criminal law redress if violated.

The Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and Other Superstitutious Practices Bill, 2022, was a Private Member’s Bill that the CPI MP had previously informed the Rajya Sabha Secretary General he intended to “move for leave” to introduce during the next winter session of Parliament.

“Such actions devastate society and mislead people into taking drastic measures. Certain individuals abuse religious and cultural customs to take advantage of others, “said Viswam.
