Earlier, on September 27, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu told ANI that he plans to visit India as soon as possible, praising the “very strong” bilateral relationship between the two countries. “I am planning to visit (India) as soon as possible…We have a very strong bilateral relationship,” Muizzu stated during the 79th United Nations General Assembly.

Notably, if the visit happens, it will be Muizzu’s second trip to India, following his first in June for the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Traditionally, every Maldivian President made India their first foreign visit, but Muizzu broke this trend by visiting Turkiye and China first after taking office earlier this year.

Since taking office, the Mohamed Muizzu government has adopted a reconciliatory approach after relations between the two nations became strained. Muizzu, who campaigned on an ‘India Out’ platform, with a focus on the removal of Indian troops from the Maldives, has taken several unconventional steps in the context of India-Maldives ties.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

Misri was warmly welcomed by his Nepalese counterpart, Sewa Lamsal, upon arrival. The Embassy of India in Kathmandu highlighted the visit as part of regular high-level exchanges, reinforcing India’s Neighbourhood First policy. Misri is set to meet with Prime Minister K P Oli, President Ram Chandra Poudel, and Foreign Minister Arzu Rana during his visit.

The visit also aims to strengthen bilateral relations.
</excerpt>

India and Maldives have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to introduce the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in the Maldives. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, during his official visit to Maldives, announced that this move will positively impact the Maldives’ tourism sector.

UPI Introduction and Expected Benefits

The agreement, signed on Friday, marks a significant step in enhancing digital payment systems in the Maldives. Developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), UPI is an instant real-time payment system that facilitates mobile-based inter-bank transactions. Jaishankar highlighted that UPI has revolutionized digital transactions in India, where 40% of the world’s real-time payments occur. He anticipates that the implementation of UPI will have a “very positive” effect on the Maldivian tourism industry, which is a crucial economic sector for the island nation.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

Jaishankar’s visit is also aimed at resetting India-Maldives relations following a period of tension. The visit is the first high-level trip from India since President Mohamed Muizzu assumed office last year. During the visit, Jaishankar and Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer discussed enhancing economic cooperation, including the renewal of a Memorandum of Understanding for civil service training and the inauguration of several high-impact projects in the Maldives.

Future Prospects and Ongoing Cooperation

The Maldivian government has expressed interest in negotiating a Free Trade Agreement with India, which Zameer believes will facilitate trade and investment between the two nations. Both countries have committed to further strengthening their partnership through joint exercises, expanded training opportunities, and collaboration on regional security issues. Jaishankar reiterated India’s commitment to supporting the Maldives through economic assistance and critical supply provisions, emphasizing a shared commitment to mutual development and stability.

</excerpt>

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh returned home early from her trip to China, cutting short what was her fifth visit to the country as PM. Initially scheduled to leave Beijing on Thursday, July 11, Hasina departed on Wednesday night. This abrupt change in plans has sparked speculation that she did not achieve the desired outcomes from her visit.

During her trip, Hasina met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang on July 10. The two nations signed 21 agreements, including the renewal of three Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs). These agreements elevated their relationship from a “strategic partnership” to a “comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership,” according to the Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS).

Signed Agreements and Economic Aid

The bilateral talks between Hasina and Chinese leaders focused on various issues, including the Rohingya crisis, trade, investment, and regional matters. Among the signed agreements were those concerning trade, infrastructure development, and the export of agricultural products from Bangladesh. China committed to providing economic grants, interest-free loans, concessional loans, and commercial loans to Bangladesh.

Despite these agreements, Bangladesh was reportedly disappointed with the level of financial assistance. While China announced economic aid of 1 billion yuan ($137 million), Dhaka had hoped for more substantial support, expecting a $5 billion loan package, as per the Economic Times.

Discontent and Early Departure

Sources suggest that Hasina’s early return was influenced by dissatisfaction with the outcomes of her visit. She expected more extensive talks with President Xi but had only brief interactions, with Premier Li serving as the main interlocutor. Additionally, the lack of an official meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and limited media coverage of her visit contributed to her decision to return early.

According to reports, Hasina cited her daughter’s health as the reason for her early departure, but insiders believe the unmet expectations and perceived lack of appropriate protocol played a significant role.

Bangladesh-China Relations

Bangladesh’s relationship with China has been characterized by significant economic and defense cooperation. China has been Bangladesh’s largest trading partner for 13 years, with investments reaching $3.2 billion last year. The two countries have collaborated on numerous infrastructure projects, including railways, highways, bridges, and power stations. Bangladesh joined China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in 2016, and defense ties have also grown, with China supplying military equipment to Bangladesh.

Despite this cooperation, the balancing act between China and India remains challenging for Bangladesh. The country has historical and cultural ties with India and has tried to maintain a neutral stance amidst rising geopolitical tensions in South Asia and the Indo-Pacific region.

Future Prospects and Challenges

The evolving geopolitical landscape presents complex issues for Bangladesh, including regional security, water rights, and economic integration. While economic cooperation with China has brought development benefits, it has also raised concerns about debt dependency and strategic vulnerability. As Bangladesh navigates these challenges, maintaining balanced relations with both China and India will be increasingly difficult.

The early conclusion of Hasina’s visit to China highlights the delicate nature of international diplomacy and the significant expectations placed on bilateral engagements. As Bangladesh continues to develop its strategic partnerships, the outcomes of such high-level visits will remain crucial to its foreign policy and economic development.

This gesture of camaraderie, which follows previous selfies at the G20 Summit in Delhi and COP28 in Dubai, has become popular online, with the hashtag “#Melodi” trending on social media.

During their meeting at the G7 Summit, PM Modi and PM Meloni discussed enhancing bilateral defence and security cooperation. They expressed optimism about further collaboration in the defence industry, anticipating the upcoming visits of the Italian aircraft carrier ITS Cavour and training ship ITS Vespucci to India. PM Modi also appreciated Italy’s recognition of the Indian Army’s contributions during the Italian Campaign in World War II, and announced plans to upgrade the Yashwant Ghadge Memorial in Montone, Italy.

The leaders reviewed the progress of the India-Italy Strategic Partnership, celebrating the growing trade and economic ties between the two countries. They emphasized the importance of expanding commercial collaborations in areas such as clean energy, manufacturing, space, science and technology, telecommunications, artificial intelligence, and critical minerals to create resilient supply chains. The recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Industrial Property Rights was welcomed as a significant step towards cooperation in patents, designs, and trademarks.

A notable development from the meeting was the signing of a Letter of Intent for Cooperation in Energy Transition, aligning with the Global Biofuels Alliance, which aims to strengthen bilateral efforts in clean and green energy. PM Meloni congratulated PM Modi on his third consecutive term as Prime Minister, and both leaders expressed satisfaction with the new Executive Programme of Cooperation for 2025-27, which aims to promote joint research and development in science and technology.

</excerpt>

The United States has said its partnership with India is one of its most consequential relationships and that Washington and New Delhi are working closely on “vital priorities”.

“We work with India closely on our most vital priorities, and we expect Ambassador Garcetti to be able to deepen the relationship between our countries and work on these matters of shared concern,” State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said.

Miller further said that US consular teams have taken cognizance of the visa issue. “We obviously recognise that it’s an area of concern and our consular teams have been making a huge push to process as many visa applications as possible in India, including those in visa categories that are key to the bilateral relationship. It is a top priority for our government, and I know it’s a top priority for our embassy in the country.”

Speaking of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit- slated for June 22- Miller stated that the Russia-Ukraine conflict has been a fixture in discussions between the PM and US President Joe Biden. “Certainly, the war in Ukraine will be one of the topics that is under discussion. It’s been one of the topics that have been under discussion in previous meetings with Prime Minister Modi, as it is in just about any conversation we have with a world leader at this time or has been the case for the past year.”

The White House recently said that PM Modi’s visit to the US will be an opportunity to “reaffirm the deep and close partnership” between both countries. Maintaining close ties with India is “very important to the [US] President,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean Pierre said.

Pierre added that the visit is expected to strengthen both countries’ shared commitment to a free, open, prosperous and secure Indo-Pacific as well as the resolve to evaluate strategic technology partnership, including in defence, clean energy and space.

Jaishankar said on Monday that India and Russia have exceeded their bilateral trade target of USD 30 billion by 2025, and that trade is expected to increase further. “We have crossed the bilateral trade target of USD 30 billion before the year 2025, which was the target year given to us […]
</excerpt>

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said on Monday that India and Russia have exceeded their bilateral trade target of USD 30 billion by 2025, and that trade is expected to increase further.

“We have crossed the bilateral trade target of USD 30 billion before the year 2025, which was the target year given to us by our leaders,” he said at the India-Russia Business Dialogue in Delhi. And, in fact, I understand that the trade for the period April 2022-February 2023 is around USD 45 billion, with the expectation that it will continue to grow.” According to Jaishankar, India and Russia must encourage business on both sides. He stated that they are determined to make India a “global manufacturing hub”.

“We need to motivate business on both sides. You can see that there are big changes going on, like Make in India. We are determined to make India a global manufacturing hub. I want to emphasise the opportunity for Make in India and Russia, as Russia is known for its technological strength,” Jaishankar said.

Speaking about the relations between India and Russia, Jaishankar said that the two nations have historic people-to-people ties. He also spoke about the possibility of greater business between the two nations in the tourism sector.

In his remarks at the India-Russia Business Dialogue, Jaishankar said, “Our two countries have historically also had a strong people-to-people connection. But I must point out that we actually get less than 1 percent of Russia’s outbound tourism. So, now that we are talking about exploring new areas and new opportunities, I would also flag whether more direct flights to more destinations will provide a possibility for greater business when it comes to tourism.”

EAM Jaishankar stressed that the ties between India and Russia have not changed. He said, “Our partnership today is a subject of attention and comment, not because it has changed but because it has not. Indeed, it has been among the steadiest of the major relationships in the world in the contemporary era. But that by itself is not enough.” Jaishankar said that Russia is looking more towards Asia, and for India, it means a broadening of engagement between the two nations, which was overly dependent on military, nuclear, and supply-space cooperation.

In his address at the India-Russia Business Dialogue, he said, “We are discussing the importance of connectivity, and the north-south and maritime corridors have been considered.” There is also discussion on payment issues like international trade settlement in the Indian rupee.

EAM Jaishankar said that there is concern regarding the trade imbalance. He highlighted the need to work with Russia urgently to address the trade imbalance. He said that addressing the issue means addressing the impediments, whether they are market access impediments, non-tariff barriers, or issues regarding payment and logistics.

“India is an indispensable partner, and I believe India and Japan are in an extremely unique position in the current international relations. India is the largest democracy in the world. </excerpt>

The Continued unilateral attempts by China to change the Line of Actual Control (LAC) status quo have impacted India-China bilateral relationship, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in its Annual Report 2021-22 released on Monday.

According to the MEA report, China has since April-May 2020, undertaken several attempts to unilaterally alter the status quo along the LAC in Western Sector, which seriously disturbed the peace and tranquillity along the LAC. These attempts by China were invariably met with an appropriate response from Indian Armed Forces, the MEA said.
According to the MEA report prepared by the Policy Planning Division of the ministry, India’s engagement with China is complex. The two sides have, however, agreed to manage their differences and not allow differences on any issue to become disputes.

Further, the two sides agreed that pending the final settlement of the boundary question, maintaining peace and tranquillity in the border areas is an essential basis for the overall development of the bilateral relationship.
Both sides have agreed to resolve the issues along the LAC in Eastern Ladakh through peaceful dialogue. Consequently, discussions have continued with the Chinese side to achieve complete disengagement from all friction points and full restoration of peace and tranquillity in the India-China Border Areas at an early date.

According to the MEA, India has maintained its engagement with China both through diplomatic and military channels to resolve the remaining issues at the earliest so as to restore peace and tranquillity in the border areas.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on September 16, 2021, met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Dushanbe, Tajikistan on the sidelines of the 21st SCO Meeting of the Head of States. The two Ministers exchanged views on the border situation along the LAC in Eastern Ladakh, the MEA said.

The two had also met earlier in Dushanbe, Tajikistan on the sidelines of the SCO Foreign Ministers’ meeting in July 2021. Military and diplomatic officials of the two sides are meeting regularly to continue their discussions on resolving the remaining issues at the earliest. Both sides agreed that a prolongation of the existing situation was not in the interest of either side as it was impacting the relationship in a negative manner.
Meanwhile, US Intelligence Community’s recent Annual Threat Assessment report said that expanded military postures by both India and China along the disputed border elevate the risk of armed confrontation between the two nuclear powers.The report said that India-China relations will remain strained in wake of the countries’ lethal clash in 2020, the most serious in decades.
