</excerpt>

BJP legislators intensified their protest against Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, staging demonstrations both inside and outside the Assembly and demanding his resignation over controversial remarks on birth control. The uproar follows Kumar’s comments during a debate on caste census, where he suggested that girls’ education would prevent pregnancies resulting from sexual intercourse when they marry later in life.

The comment triggered opposition from BJP members and drew criticism from the National Women’s Commission (NCW), which called for an unconditional apology. In response to the backlash, Kumar retracted his remarks, stating, “I take back my remarks and do apologize to anyone who I may have offended by my remarks.”

Despite the apology, the opposition, particularly the BJP, continued to demand the resignation of the Bihar CM. Chaos ensued during the legislative council session, with opposition members raising slogans against Nitish Kumar and labeling him an “anti-Dalit and anti-women CM.”

Members of the ruling alliance staged a counter-protest and raised slogans over the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre allegedly not extending an invitation to President Droupadi Murmu to inaugurate the new Parliament building.

</excerpt>

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman sharply criticized Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over his recent comments on population control, deeming them “shameful.” Sitharaman’s rebuke came during her visit to Bhopal, where she is actively participating in the campaign for the impending Madhya Pradesh assembly election scheduled for this month.

Expressing her dismay, Sitharaman pointed out the absence of strong condemnation from leaders of the INDIA bloc and Congress family regarding Kumar’s remarks. She underscored the disturbing mentality displayed by the alliance, emphasizing that women were being viewed primarily as a vote bank rather than as individuals with rights and dignity.

Kumar’s controversial statements were made during a debate on caste census in the Bihar Assembly, where he suggested that educating women would lead to a reduction in sexual intercourse and, consequently, control population growth.

Despite Kumar’s subsequent apology on Wednesday, Sitharaman stressed the importance of more robust condemnation from political leaders. She highlighted the need for a deeper understanding and respect for women’s autonomy and rights within the political discourse.

In contrast, Sitharaman commended the Madhya Pradesh government for its strides in healthcare and development. She cited a substantial increase in the number of medical colleges, growing from five to 30 over the past two decades. Additionally, medical seats surged from 620 to 4,000, contributing to improved healthcare infrastructure in the state.

Sitharaman also lauded the effectiveness of the Mukhyamantri Laldi Bahna Yojana, a scheme benefitting 1.32 crore women. These positive initiatives, according to Sitharaman, demonstrated the commitment of the Madhya Pradesh government to holistic development.

Madhya Pradesh is gearing up for polls on November 17, with voters set to elect legislators from 230 Assembly constituencies. The results of the election will be disclosed on December 3. The state remains a crucial battleground, with political leaders actively engaging in campaigning to secure support from the electorate.

</excerpt>

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday launched a strong attack on Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over his derogatory remarks against women in relation to population control and said crass words were uttered in the state assembly and there was “no shame”.

PM Modi condemned the derogatory words uttered in the assembly and expressed his concern over the opposition’s lack of response to the insult to mothers and sisters present during the session. He questioned the leaders of the opposition alliance, collectively known as the INDI alliance, asking if they could genuinely work for the welfare and respect of women.

PM Modi further stated that such remarks not only harm the reputation of individuals but also tarnish the country’s image. He emphasized his commitment to upholding the honour and respect of women, stating that he would continue to work toward that goal.

The controversy began when Nitish Kumar used derogatory language in the Bihar Assembly to explain the role of education and women in population control. His remarks triggered outrage, leading to an apology from the Bihar CM, who stated that he was taking back his words.

Nitish Kumar’s comments received widespread condemnation, including from the BJP and the National Commission for Women (NCW). Union Minister of State for Home, Nityanand Rai, criticized the Bihar Chief Minister’s statements and called for an apology, suggesting that Nitish Kumar had lost his “mental stability.”

In defense of Nitish Kumar, Bihar Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav explained that the remarks were taken out of context and clarified that the Chief Minister was discussing sex education and practical measures to address population growth.

For that, we have increased the subsidy from Rs 8,895 crores to Rs 13,114 crores.” Nitish Kumar also alleged that the Central government of charging higher electricity rates from Bihar despite it being a ‘gareeb rajya’ (poor state).
“Maharashtra gets electricity at Rs 4.32 per unit, despite being the richest state, while Bihar is getting it at Rs 5.82 per unit.

The Centre should think about ‘gareeb rajya’, we get costly electricity. We have been demanding one nation one tariff for long.” added the CM further.

Earlier Bihar Electricity Regulation Commission ordered a hike of 24.1 per cent and the revised rates were to be regulated from April 1. </excerpt>

Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, Tejashwi Yadav on Thursday assured the Delhi High Court that he will join the CBI investigation on 25 March for questioning in connection with the land-for-jobs scam case.

Yadav’s lawyer assured the court after noting the submissions of CBI that “at this point of time, there is no endeavour to arrest him” During arguments on Thursday before Delhi High Court, senior advocate Maninder Singh appeared for Tejashwi Yadav submitted that CBI has been calling him while the budget session is underway.

“I can appear through Video Conferencing. I am constantly telling them that I am a resident of Bihar. I have got three summons by the agency in just a few days,” Singh said representing Yadav.

CBI advocate DP Singh said, “The budget session is not on Saturday. He (Tejashwi Yadav) was in Delhi during the first summon but he refused to join the investigation. We need his appearance before us as there are documents to be shown,” add a CBI lawyer.

Tejashwi had submitted that notice under section 160 of the CrPC can only be issued to a person, who is situated within the local jurisdiction of that police station or is within the adjoining police station. Therefore, the Impugned Notices have been issued in gross violation of the provisions of the CrPC more particularly the provision stipulated in Section 160 of the CrPC.
However, the petitioner has received the above-mentioned Impugned Notices from the Respondent, requiring him to appear in New Delhi. The same is, however, in disregard of the law, the Yadav’s lawyer said.

The Rouse Avenue Court on Wednesday granted regular bail to ex-Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, ex-Bihar CM Rabri Devi, their daughter Misa Bharti and other accused in Land for Job alleged scam case. According to the CBI, all the candidates after their engagement as substitutes were subsequently regularized.

In the Chhapra spurious liquor case in which 70 people died the key accused has been arrested after which Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said strict action will be taken against all accused.

Meanwhile, Kumar further stated all the people who were involved in the tragedy were under scanner and most people in his state were in favor of prohibition.

“I have made it clear to take strict action against the accused. And do not act on innocent people without any purpose,” Nitish Kumar said.

Talking to the media Bihar CM Kumar said, “Everyone is on it. Officials from both departments are looking into this. They are investigating each and every detail. How and why this tragedy occurred? Who did it? Who supplied the spurious liquor in the state? Everything is being investigated.”

“When the tragedy took place, a lot of things were said from different quarters. Leave it. I do not have to comment on that. but when the tragedy took place, I asked officials what happened. How did it happen?” Nitish stated.

“Why wouldn’t be kept under the lens? Everyone was asked to keep an eye on every detail,” Nitish said.

Nitish further stated, “I had already instructed officials about these things. What would I do when people began to say a lot of things at that time.”

On smuggling liquor into the state and action taken against the persons, CM Nitish said, “The important thing is that you should know that most people are in favor of liquor prohibition. What will we do? A few people are involved from the beginning. they supply here and there. They are not doing good work”.

“We counsel them and sometimes people responsible also make mistakes. We also take action in such matters. You are seeing people getting arrested. Every day people are being arrested for supplying liquor in the state,” Nitish said.

However, against all the accused Bihar CM has instructed to take strict action.

Bihar CM, Nitish Kumar inaugurates India’s longest rubber dam in Gaya

Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar inaugurated India’s longest rubber dam on the Falgu river in Gaya on Thursday, where lakhs of pilgrims from across the country and abroad come every year to pay homage to their ancestors during the Pitripaksha Mela, and a steel foot over the bridge for the convenience of the visitors.

After returning from Delhi, this was the first event of Kumar, where he had been on a three-day visit ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, to work for larger Opposition unity.

“The meeting with leaders of Opposition parties was good in Delhi. It is the beginning of the initiative and it will continue. I am not a candidate for any post. My focus is on bringing all the Opposition parties together, as that can make the difference in 2024,” he said.

Kumar stated that he proposed the name ‘Gayaji Dam’ in light of the religious beliefs associated with the location. “It is a place of redemption.” I am relieved that the dam was completed on schedule and in time for the Pitripaksha Mela, which begins on Friday. The second major step will be to ensure Ganga water in Gaya and keep it there all year. “Ganga water has reached Rajgir and is expected to reach Gaya by the end of the year,” he said, thanking Water Resources Minister Sanjay Kunar Jha and his team for finishing the project, the foundation stone for which was laid on September 22, 2020.

Kumar claims that the dam will attract more pilgrims and alter the landscape. “The dam has been built at an estimated cost of ₹324 crores. The project included experts from IIT (Roorkee). “There will be enough water in the dam all year for the pilgrims’ convenience,” he said.

The rubber dam presents a picturesque site that no one had previously imagined, was a manifestation of the CM’s vision, according to Deputy CM Tejashwi Prasad Yadav.

Responding to former Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi’s remarks that he would like to address Nitish Kumar as Prime Minister so that Tejashwi Prasad Yadav could become Chief Minister, the deputy chief minister stated, “Nitish Kumar has been serving Bihar for years and he will continue to do so.” We will offer him our assistance. There is no doubt about it. We are not interested in rhetoric. Those who came to power in 2014 promised river interconnection, converting Benaras to Kyoto, and creating jobs, but have delivered nothing. We believe in taking action. “The rubber dam speaks volumes about Nitish Kumar’s vision and commitment,” he said.

A day after meeting with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi, Nitish Kumar, the chief minister of Bihar, was reminded that the post of prime minister is not open by BJP leader and former Union Minister Ravishankar.

“Had Nitish Kumar been proactive in developing Bihar like he is for his personal ambition, many Bihari youth would have got employment opportunities,” the BJP leader tweeted.

Where have you been today, Nitish ji? asked RS Prasad, reminding Nitish Kumar that he was Ram Manohar Lohia’s student and the first proponent of non-Congressism.

“What you are doing today—knocking on every door—is not new. Many did the same before you, but with no result. There is no vacancy for the prime minister’s post. But many opposition leaders are already in the queue. “You too stand,” RS Prasad said.

Nitish Kumar is in Delhi meeting with opposition leaders one month after leaving the BJP’s alliances and forming the Mahagathbandhan government with the help of the RJD and the Congress. He met Rahul Gandhi on Monday, who apparently had a significant impact on the abrupt transition of power in Bihar.

Kumar is scheduled to meet with Sitaram Yechury, the general secretary of the CPM, and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday, following Nitish Kumar’s meeting with Telangana Chief Minister KCR.

There have been new rumours about Nitish becoming the PM’s face of the combined opposition before the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections because the Mahagathbandhan in Bihar regrouped under Nitish Kumar’s leadership.

However, such assertions have been refuted by Nitish Kumar, who also stated, following Rahul Gandhi, that he had no aspiration to become Prime Minister. He also said that if the opposition gets united, then a good atmosphere will be created.

He met RJD president, Lalu Prasad Yadav, before his Delhi visit.
