Bhumi Pednekar, Ishaan Khatter Talk The Royals & Rom-Coms

Bhumi Pednekar and Ishaan Khatter are ready to romance on screen, quite royally. Their first pairing with each other is a rom-com based in the universe of new-age vs old-timers royalty – Netflix’s new series, The Royals. Before the show’s launch, the two actors and brains behind the show Netflix’s Tanya Bami and the creator, showrunner, producer Rangita Pritish Nandy discussed with HT how the show came together.

The World of The Royals

The Royals is the romance between ‘a rajkumar and an aamkumari’, as described by the makers, a reprise of the star-crossed lovers’ role in romantic comedies. Ishaan, the actor playing a prince on the show, reports, “In some ways, being an actor is always like being a kid in a playground, as you are exploring and doing new stuff. In this case, the playground was very lavish. The fact that we were shooting at the actual City Palace (in Udaipur) greatly helped us to get into character. The atmosphere was all real. Our reference points were right in front of us at all times.”

For Bhumi, the narrative is about the two types of royalties in India coming face-to-face. She elucidates, “To me, the world (of the show) is about new royalty, which is the founders of these unicorns and startups, who are contributing to our economy and changing the system in so many ways. The theme of the show is them against the old royalty. My character, Sophia, comes in as someone who doesn’t belong to this world, but has seen her fair share of success. She has come up the hard way and is a woman in a man’s world. Then she comes into this world and is taken aback.”

Bringing Rom-Coms to Indian Screens Again

Romantic comedies were the order of the day for the longest period before action dramas and gangster series came first on streaming. In that context, The Royals is a welcome relief. “When was the last time you saw a romantic comedy series out of India that went bold and big, set in palaces and boardrooms?” says Rangita Pritish Nandy, the show’s creator, showrunner, and producer. Tanya Bami, Series Head Netflix India, further adds, “Rom-coms are a genre we all love, and we are happy to bring back this genre on streaming. The Royals has a very dreamy and quirky quality you’d want in your next favourite romantic watch—charm, humour, heart, chemistry, a fab star cast all in a fresh, stylish twist.”

An Ensemble Cast Like No Other

Except for Ishaan and Bhumi, The Royals has a vast ensemble cast with Zeenat Aman, Sakshi Tanwar, Nora Fatehi, Dino Morea, Milind Soman, Chunky Pandey, Vihaan Samat, and Sumukhi Suresh among others. Discussing the challenge of bringing so many names and faces together, Nandy states, “The first: just having the nerve to conceive it that was my father, Ishita, and me just being insanely audacious and Monika, Tanya, Kartik, Anu, Shikhaa, Utsab of Netflix fanning our greed to go big! But the biggest part of that is having writers who jump on that brief and write you characters that actors, always greedy for great parts, will not be able to say no to and for that, I must shout out to Neha Sharma along with Vishnu Sinha and Iti Agarwal who put magical words to our ambitions.”

Bami adds, “It’s not just about names, it’s about crafting root-worthy characters who leave a mark and stay with you long after the show is over. That’s the magic that happens when great writing meets amazing casting. We’ve worked with some of the industry’s biggest names and introduced exceptional new voices. But at the heart of it all is one guiding principle: the story comes first.”

About Ishaan and Bhumi’s New Pairing

Since the teaser of the show was announced at Netflix India’s slate announcement a few months ago, there has been a lot of buzz about Ishaan and Bhumi being paired opposite each other. Bhumi says, “It’s refreshing for me to have done this with Ishaan. I have followed his work for years and he is quite a brilliant actor. I really hope the audiences enjoy watching us as much as we enjoyed working with each other.”

Mere Husband Ki Biwi Box Office: Will the Romantic Comedy Pick Up Pace?

‘Mere Husband Ki Biwi’, which was released on February 21, is still up against competition from ‘Chhaava’, starring Rashmika Mandanna and Vicky Kaushal. On its debut Sunday (Day 3), the movie brought in ₹1.25 crore, according to Sacnilk. The film, stars Arjun Kapoor, Rakul Preet Singh, and Bhumi Pednekar in the key roles. Directed by Mudassar Aziz, the film is still doing quite well at the box office.

Based on the report, the overall box office collection of this romantic comedy is ₹4.45 crore. On the first Sunday, ‘Mere Husband Ki Biwi’ had an all-India Hindi occupancy of 15.82%. The movie was produced by Pooja Entertainment and had a star cast of actors such as Kanwaljit Singh, Shakti Kapoor, Harsh Gujral, Anita Raj, and Mukesh Rishi.

Plot of the Movie

The whole plot is a romantic comedy revolving around the main leads. As Ankur Chaddha (played by Arjun Kapoor) finds himself torn between his fiancée Antara Khanna (Rakul Preet Singh) and his ex-wife Prabhleen Kaur Dhillon (played by Bhumi Pednekar), the romantic comedy’s plot revolves around a series of exchanges. The audience is inconsolable as a result of the love triangle’s numerous misunderstandings.

Recently, Rakul Preet Singh had an open discussion during which she spoke about the box office performance of the film. Noting her pleasure over the support, she expressed, “I’m very grateful and humbled by the critic and public review. The audience walking out with a smile is the happiest feeling. The video features Pednekar preparing Ukadiche Modak, a steamed delicacy with a rice flour exterior and a coconut filling. She starts by making the dough, simmering milk and water with ghee and salt, then adding rice flour to create a soft, shaggy mixture. The dough is kneaded and rested for ten minutes.

Throughout the video, Pednekar appears to seek guidance from her mother and others off-camera, with her mom providing instructions via CCTV. For the filling, Pednekar combines grated coconut, ghee, poppy seeds, jaggery, and cardamom.

She forms the modaks by stuffing dough pieces with the coconut mixture, steaming them in turmeric leaves, and garnishing with saffron and ghee. Red Chillies Entertainment produced the film, which follows an unyielding woman’s search for justice. In ‘Bhakshak‘, Bhumi investigates a case of child sexual assault in a girl’s shelter home.

On receiving love from the audience, Bhumi said, “As an actor, nothing is more joyous than unanimous praise from the film industry, media, and audience about one’s performance. Official trailer for ‘The Lady Killer’, a thriller film featuring Arjun Kapoor and Bhumi Pednekar, was released by the film’s makers.
The T-series YouTube channel is where the makers have released the trailer.
The movie, directed by Ajay Bahl, is scheduled to open in theaters on November 3.

The story of Arjun’s character relocating to a new town and meeting Bhumi, who draws his attention, is told in the two minutes and twenty-three-second trailer.

They are portrayed in the script as passionate lovers, but as the narrative progresses, Arjun becomes entangled in a web of intricate connections with other women.

I have only tried to break the mould with every film, with every role. I like disruption. I will always look to do the same. I hate doing the routine. I hate doing similar films and roles. It doesn’t creatively inspire me.”

Bhumi has plenty of projects lined up in her kitty. She feels audiences will be pleasantly surprised to see her dabble in multiple genres in her next slate of movies.

Bhumi continued, “So, one can always expect the unexpected from me. The Ladykiller, Mere Husband Ki Biwi, Bhakshak and my future slate of projects are extremely distinct. Each project is fresh and has a newness to them and they will enable me to showcase my craft in the best possible way.”

Her upcoming appearance will be seen in “The Ladykiller” alongside Arjun Kapoor portraying a small-town playboy who falls in love with a self-destructive beauty.

2023 will be my year in cinema as an actor: Bhumi Pednekar

Actor Bhumi Pednekar has delivered some of the most memorable performances by a leading lady in recent years. She had a solid 2022 that saw her prove yet again that she is amongst the best actresses in India today with two brilliant performances in Badhaai Do and Govinda Naam Mera.

This year, Bhumi has six releases – the most by any actress in the Indian film industry and she wishes that it will be her year in cinema, given the variety of roles that she will be essaying on screen. Bhumi will be seen in 2023 in films like Anubhav Sinha’s Bheed, Ajay Bahl’s The Ladykiller, Sudhir Mishra’s Afwaa, Gauri Khan produced Bhakshak, Mudassar Aziz’s Mere Husband Ki Biwi and a couple of more unannounced projects that will push the bar for cinema.

Bhumi says, “With six films releasing this year, I’m putting it out in the universe that 2023 will be my year in cinema as an actor! Given the diversity of these films and the powerful women that I will essay in the film, I don’t think I could push myself any further to showcase the variety of roles that I can play as an artist.“

She adds, “People will get to see six different Bhumi’s on-screen in one year which is what is most exciting for me. I love to play out different lives on screen. It excites me, challenges me and stimulates me as an artist. I’m fortunate that I’m an actor living out my dream every single day. I couldn’t have manifested anything better to happen to me.”

Bhumi, who is a favourite among award circles for her towering performances, further adds, “My wish for 2023 is very simple. I want to entertain everyone with these six films and move a few notches higher to realizing my personal goal, which is to be regarded as one of the best actors that India has ever seen. I know it’s a lot of hard work and I’m prepared to put in everything for this because I’m in it to be amongst the best. This has driven me so far and I hope this fuels what the future has in store for me.”

‘Govinda Naam Mera’ new posters unveiled, to release on 16 December

The new poster of the movie ‘Govinda Naam Mera’ has been unveiled by the makers of the movie on Friday.

The movie stars Vicky Kaushal, Kiara Advani, and Bhumi Pednekar and they also shared the poster of the movie on their social media handle.

Bollywood actor Vicky Kaushal shared the poster on Instagram and wrote, “Govinda naam mera, naachna kaam mera. Aa raha hun jald, apni kahaani le kar!#GovindaNaamMera streaming from 16th Dec, only on Disney+ Hotstar!.”

Taking to Instagram Kiara Advani also shared the poster and captioned, “Come and say hi huku with Suku! #GovindaNaamMera streaming from 16th Dec.”

Actor Bhumi Pednekar also shared the poster and wrote, “Ayeee, Gauri aa rahi hai. Taiyaar ho ki nahi? #GovindaNaamMera streaming from 16th Dec.”

Meanwhile, the movie is directed by Shashank Khaitan and is scheduled to stream on the OTT platform Disney+ Hotstar from December 16, 2022.

The movie ‘Govinda Naam Mera’ is touted to be a quirky murder mystery, which is Vicky’s second movie under Dharma Productions. The first movie Vicky worked under the banner was ‘Bhoot Part One: The Haunted Ship’.

Talking about Vicky’s upcoming work he will be next seen in the biopic movie ‘Sam Bahadur’ opposite Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra which is directed by Anand Tiwari film alongside Tripti Dimri and Meghna Gulzar and Laxman Utekar’s next untitled romantic comedy film alongside Sara Ali Khan.

Moreover, Bhumi Pednekar will be next seen in the movie ‘The Ladykiller’ which also stars Arjun Kapoor. Gauri Khan’s production ‘Bhakshak’, and Anubhav Sinha’s ‘Bheed’.

However, Kiara Advani will be next seen in ‘Satyaprem Ki Katha’ opposite Kartik Aaryan.

BHUMI, RAJKUMMAR KICK-START ‘BADHAAI DO’ SHOOT

MUMBAI: By sharing pictures from the first day on sets in Dehradun, Bhumi Pednekar and Rajkummar Rao kick-started the shooting for their upcoming film ‘Badhaai Do’. The ‘Durgamati’ actress hopped on to Instagram to share all smiles picture with the clap with her co-star Rao. Amid the picturesque view of the hilly region, sporting a blue sweater, the ‘Ludo’ actor Rao is seen sporting a heavy moustache, and no beard look. Bhumi is also seen donning winter ensemble, and light makeup look. The director, Harshvardhan Kulkarni is also seen posing along with the duo, as they initiate shooting for the project. Pednekar captioned the post as, “Shuru ho gai hai hamari kahani, Jahan hai dono Raja aur Rani, Shardul Aur Sumi hai ekdam pyaare.
