Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections, India’s leading political entities, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress, have revealed their respective manifestos, each highlighting distinctive strategies regarding foreign policy and national security.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) manifesto, titled ‘Sankalp Patra,’ for the forthcoming Lok Sabha Elections 2024 on April 14. In contrast, the Congress party had released its manifesto on April 5.

The BJP’s manifesto outlines a vision centered on promoting India’s interests globally, embodying the concept of ‘Vishwa Bandhu’ or ‘kinsman of the universe.’ This approach signifies a more inclusive stance towards international relations. Additionally, the BJP has chosen to emphasize the term “Bharat” extensively, underlining a cultural and traditional form of self-identification.

Contrastingly, the Congress party has committed to enhancing ties with India’s immediate neighbors. This strategy likely aims to tackle regional stability and cooperation, particularly concerning ongoing challenges like border disputes with China and issues of cross-border terrorism related to Pakistan.

Young Voters

Both parties have dedicated sections in their manifestos to address the concerns and aspirations of young voters, particularly focusing on the 18-19 year old demographic, which comprises about 1.8 crore new voters in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Congress: Congress intends to adopt the Rajasthan Model of cashless insurance, providing coverage up to ₹25 lakhs for universal healthcare. They promise that healthcare will be universal and free in public health centers, including hospitals, clinics, primary health centers, mobile healthcare units, dispensaries, and health camps. Additionally, the Congress plans to increase the budget allocation for health step by step every year, aiming to achieve 4 per cent of the total expenditure by 2028-29.

Indian Economy

BJP: The BJP promises to ensure that India becomes the 3rd largest economic power globally. They pledge to maintain low inflation and focus on enhancing employment, self-employment, and livelihood opportunities for citizens. Congress: Congress has set a target of doubling the country’s GDP over the next decade. ‘Country is demanding for change’ says Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge

The Congress Working Committee convened on Tuesday and extensively discussed the party’s manifesto for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, which were announced on Saturday. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, along with former party chiefs Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, as well as other Congress leaders, attended the meeting held at the AICC headquarters in Delhi.

Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram, who chaired the manifesto committee, had previously stated that the draft report would be presented to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge for discussion by the Congress Working Committee. Kharge welcomed the members, highlighting that a committee under Chidambaram’s chairmanship had been formed to draft the manifesto.

Kharge emphasized the committee’s efforts to ensure public participation in the manifesto’s preparation by holding extensive consultations across the country. He mentioned that suggestions and comments were also solicited through an online platform called “Awaaz Bharat Ki.” Kharge assured that the promises made in the manifesto would be strictly implemented, following thorough deliberation to ensure feasibility.

He underscored the significance of the Congress Party’s manifesto, which has been historically regarded as a “document of trust and commitment” since 1926. Kharge recalled the Congress party’s first manifesto after independence, released under Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s leadership, known as “What Congress Stands For.”

Regarding the recently concluded Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, Kharge noted its importance and described it as the largest mass contact movement in political history. He highlighted the five pillars of the yatra and the guarantees made under each, emphasizing the efforts of Rahul Gandhi in this regard.

Kharge announced that a total of 25 guarantees, five for each of the five Nyays, had been announced over the last two months. He expressed the need to outline the party’s priorities, policies, and programs for the next five years and requested Chidambaram to provide a detailed overview of the draft manifesto.

After the presentation, Kharge proposed a brief discussion among the CWC members to finalize the manifesto based on their comments. He also requested Rahul Gandhi to intervene during the discussion. Kharge emphasized the importance of ensuring wide publicity for the manifesto across different states and reaching every household in the country.

In a post on X, Kharge mentioned that the Congress Working Committee thoroughly deliberated on the Congress manifesto, stating, “The country is fervently demanding a change.” He also highlighted the schedule for the Lok Sabha Elections 2024, which would be conducted in seven phases from April 19 to June 1, with results declared on June 4.

‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra will not be derailed’ says Jairam Ramesh on Rahul Gandhi’s summon

Responding to the summons from the District Civil Court in Sultanpur, where Rahul Gandhi was asked to appear in a defamation case, Jairam Ramesh, Congress’s General Secretary in charge of Communications, asserted that the ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ would not be derailed, and Rahul Gandhi would not be silenced. He emphasized that the Indian National Congress would not be intimidated.

In a statement, Jairam Ramesh conveyed, “This morning Rahul Gandhi will be at the District Civil Court in Sultanpur that had issued a summons to him 36 hours earlier to appear before it on a defamation case filed by a BJP leader in August 2018. Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra will not be derailed. Rahul Gandhi will not be silenced. The Indian National Congress will not be intimidated.”

The Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, now on its 38th day, resumed from Fursantganj in Amethi district and proceeded towards Raebareli and Lucknow. Jairam Ramesh explained the schedule for the day, stating, “Today is the 38th day. We have paused the yatra this morning. At 2 pm, we will start again from Fursatganj. There will be a public rally in Raebareli. After that, we will move towards Lucknow.”

Rahul Gandhi, a Congress leader, has been summoned by the District Civil Court in Sultanpur on February 20 in connection with a 2018 case involving derogatory remarks made against Union Home Minister Amit Shah during a Bengaluru conference. The complaint was filed by the then BJP District Vice President, Vijay Mishra.

Vijay Mishra expressed the reasons for filing the complaint, stating, “I was the vice president of BJP when this incident happened. Rahul Gandhi had accused Amit Shah in Bengaluru that he is a murderer. When I heard these allegations, I felt very pained because I am a 33-year-old worker of the party. I filed a complaint regarding this through my lawyer, and this continued for almost 5 years. Today the decision came in this.”

Santosh Kumar Pandey, the lawyer representing Vijay Mishra, explained the legal implications, mentioning that Rahul Gandhi could face a maximum punishment of 2 years if sufficient evidence is found against him.

The Congress’s ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra,’ followed by the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra,’ is part of the party’s initiative covering 6,700 km through 15 states with an eye on the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra enters 37th day

As the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra enters its 37th day, Congress General Secretary in Charge of Communications, Jairam Ramesh, announced on Monday that Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi will attend a public rally in Babuganj.

“Today is the 37th day of Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi will address a public rally in Babuganj. We will stay in Amethi tonight and reach Raebareli tomorrow morning. We will stay in Lucknow tomorrow and in Kanpur the day after. Then, we will take 2 days’ rest on 22nd and 23rd February…” said Congress leader, Jairam Ramesh.

When asked about Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh joining Bharat Jodo Naya Yatra, Jairam Ramesh said, “I expect that he will join the Yatra tomorrow. Earlier, Apna Dal leader Pallavi Patel also joined the yatra.”

Previously, the Samajwadi Party Chief welcomed Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s invitation to participate in the Yatra, stating that he will do it in Amethi or Rae Bareli. However, with little progress being made in the two parties’ seat-sharing talks, there are indications that the SP Chief will remain away from the Yatra as it passes through Uttar Pradesh.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi appealed on Sunday for the country’s youth to wake up and fight for their rights.
He claimed that the youth should have the primary claim to the country’s wealth and resources, rather than “people like Adani and Ambani”.

Nyay Yatra to Take Two-Day Break After Completion of Odisha Leg: Congress’ Jairam Ramesh

The Odisha phase of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, led by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, is set to wrap up on Thursday, according to party leader Jairam Ramesh.
Taking to social media, X, Congress General Secretary in-charge Communications Jairam Ramesh, said that the yatra will have a two-day respite beginning this afternoon.

“This morning, after going through Jharsuguda District, there will be a flag handover at Rengalpali and the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra will complete its Odisha run and move into Chhattisgarh. After 12 continuous days on the road, from this afternoon onwards, through the 9th and 10th, the Yatra will be on a break. The Yatra will resume on the morning of the 11th of February in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh,” Jairam Ramesh wrote on X.
“The Yatra will re-enter Jharkhand on the morning of the 14th, and thereafter re-enter Bihar on the morning of the 15th. On the afternoon of February 16th, the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra will enter Uttar Pradesh,” he added.

On Wednesday, the 25th day of the Nyay Yatra, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi paid a visit to Vedvyas Dham in the Sundergarh region of Western Odisha. The cave of this temple is thought to be the location where philosopher and poet Ved Vyas ji wrote the Mahabharata.
The Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, arrived in Odisha on Tuesday after passing through Jharkhand.
The Yatra received a warm welcome in Biramitrapur, a small industrial town in Sundergarh district.
On this occasion, Jharkhand Congress President Rajesh Thakur presented the national flag to Odisha Congress President Sarat Patnaik.

The Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra began in Thoubal, Manipur, on January 14. The yatra will travel over 6,700 km in 67 days, passing across 110 regions. It would traverse 6,713 kilometres, passing through 100 Lok Sabha constituencies, 337 assembly segments, and 110 districts.
The 67-day yatra will culminate in Mumbai on March 20.
The Yatra 2.0, a hybrid version of the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ that saw Rahul Gandhi walk over 3,000 kilometers from Kanya Kumari to Srinagar, is a follow-up to the former.

FIR filed against Rahul Gandhi, others for alleged damage to public property in Assam

An FIR has been lodged against Rahul Gandhi, a Congress leader, along with several others, including KC Venugopal and Kanhaiya Kumar, for causing damage to public property during the Nyay Yatra in Assam, as reported by the state Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma. Earlier in the day, a confrontation unfolded between the police and Congress workers in Guwahati, Assam, during the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. Rahul Gandhi, the Congress MP, encountered hindrances while attempting to enter Guwahati during the yatra, prompting protests from party members who broke barricades and voiced slogans. Speaking to his supporters on the outskirts of the city, Rahul Gandhi affirmed, “We have broken barricades, but will not break the law.”

Continuing to underscore the party’s resilience, he stated, “You should not think we are weak. We have broken the barricades. They have canceled my program at the university. My program was canceled, but the students heard me outside. In the video published by PTI, Rahul Gandhi was seen in the hush and rush to enter the temple. He said to the security official, “What is the issue brother? Can I go and see the barricades? What mistake I have done that I am not allowed inside the temple?”

Ashok Gehlot criticises Assam CM, expressing worries over public safety

In the wake of Congress’s assertion that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Assam government is impeding its ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra,’ which commenced in the state earlier this week, Ashok Gehlot, Congress leader and former Chief Minister of Rajasthan, directed his criticism towards Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Gehlot emphasized that Sarma, being not just a BJP leader but also the Chief Minister, bears the responsibility of ensuring the safety of every citizen.

The Congress has accused the BJP-led Assam government of creating obstacles for its Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, initiated in the state on Thursday. Gehlot, in an interview with ANI, commented on Rahul Gandhi’s yatra, stating, “Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ is being welcomed across the country. He is trying to ensure justice for everyone, whether social or economic.” Gehlot expressed concerns about rising inflation, unemployment, and the widening wealth gap, highlighting them as significant issues. He noted that the BJP is apprehensive about Gandhi’s yatra.

Further addressing the situation, Gehlot pointed out, “Himanta Biswa Sarmaji is not just a BJP leader; he is a Chief Minister too. It is his responsibility to ensure the safety of every citizen and every person visiting the state, no matter which party they belong to.”

Jairam Ramesh, Congress General Secretary in Charge of Communications, asserted during a press conference that the Assam government, under Himanta Biswa Sarma, is actively working to thwart the success of the Bharat Jodo Yatra. Despite the alleged hurdles, he expressed confidence that various sections of Assam, including youth and women, will pay heed to Rahul Gandhi’s message.

Upon entering Assam, Rahul Gandhi criticized Himanta’s government, labeling it perhaps the “most corrupt government” in India. The Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, led by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, faced a setback as the Jorhat Police registered a case against several individuals associated with the Yatra for alleged deviation from the originally planned route. Jorhat Superintendent of Police Mohan Lal Meena, addressing reporters, stated that the case was filed after taking suo motu cognizance of the route deviation.

The Yatra, which rolled into Assam on Thursday, saw Rahul Gandhi crossing the Brahmaputra river by boat on the sixth day of the journey, en route to Majuli, an island in Assam. The Congress party shared an image of Rahul accompanied by party leaders and workers during the boat ride.

The Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra by the Congress began its fifth day on Thursday, moving from Tuli in Nagaland to Jorhat in Assam. Speaking to the crowd, Rahul Gandhi said that Assam has what may be the most corrupt government in all of India. In Sivasagar, Assam, a flag-transfer ceremony was conducted immediately prior to the Yatra.

“BJP-RSS are doing injustice in the country and every state. Be it economic injustice, social injustice or political injustice. There is an atmosphere of civil war in Manipur and till date PM Modi has not visited the state. The Prime Minister had made big promises in Nagaland. He signed the framework agreement nine years ago. People of Nagaland are today asking what happened to that agreement,” Rahul Gandhi said.

“Similar things are happening in Assam also. Perhaps the most corrupt government of India runs in Assam. We got a very good response in Nagaland and I hope we get the same in Assam also. We are repeating the history of Assam again. Shankar Dev ji had shown you the path, had worked to connect everyone. Similarly, Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra is going on,” he added.

“This journey has become a journey of enthusiasm and courage for the people of Assam because the people here are troubled. People are waiting to see when Rahul Gandhi will come here. This is a historical journey. Our Party believes in the Constitution of India. Today BJP considers itself more knowledgeable than Shankaracharyas. There is a lot of ego in them,” he said.

The third day of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra began early on Tuesday in Kohima, Nagaland. The yatra started in Sekmai and finished its route through Manipur on Monday. On the third day of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’s journey, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi met the people of Kohima, Nagaland this morning. Here, the Yatra came to an end on Monday night. On X, Congressman Jairam Ramesh poked fun at Prime Minister Modi by bringing up the state of the roads in Nagaland.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday expressed gratitude to the people of Manipur after his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra crossed the state and entered Nagaland on Monday evening.

He added saying that the nation is now in the devotion of Lord Ram referring to the upcoming Pran Pratishtha event in Ayodhya, and so the opposition is resisting to see the progress. “The country’s people have given them an answer in the last two elections and they will do so this time as well,” he added.

Meanwhile, Nalin Kohli – a BJP spokesperson said that Rahul Gandhi’s political campaigns have no meaning, “These words that the Congress party uses for Rahul Gandhi’s political campaigns…they have no meaning. The Congress party has no intention to implement them,” Kohli said.

Kohli further alleged the Congress of their failed attempts to unite themselves with the east during their reign. He compared the increased visit to the Northeast after the BJP government with the number of ministers traveling to the east during the UPA regime.

Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said that Rahul Gandhi has come with a message of peace, love and brotherhood in Manipur, which has been facing violence for a long time.

Danish Ali, the MP for Lok Sabha, has chosen to attend the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’s launch in Manipur despite having recently been suspended by the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).

“I have decided to join him (Rahul Gandhi) in this yatra because I feel I would be failing in my duty as a politician and a social worker if I did not join the biggest drive for unity and justice. I pray for the success of this yatra and for the future of my country,” Danish Ali said in a post on ‘X’.

“This yatra is a call for action against divisive forces. This yatra is a drive to unite the people of our country against fear, hate, exploitation and divisiveness,” he added.
Earlier in the day, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh took a dig at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) saying that the Yatra is aimed to raise voice against “Anyay Kal” (era of justice) of the last 10 years.

“The 6700+ km Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra from Khongjom in Manipur to Mumbai in Maharashtra starts today — to raise our voice for economic justice, social justice and political justice, to raise our voice against the ANYAY KAAL of the last 10 years,” Ramesh said in a post on ‘X’.

Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra: Rahul Gandhi’s flight to Imphal to be delayed due to fog

Due to fog and poor visibility at Delhi Airport on Sunday morning, a special IndiGo flight carrying Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, was going to travel to Manipur’s Imphal for the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra was delayed. The leaders of Congress are waiting in the airport lounge, having not yet boarded the aircraft. Rahul was seen on Sunday morning heading to the airport from his Delhi home. The ‘Bharat Jodo Nyaya Yatra’ is set to commence at noon at the Khongjom War Memorial with a floral tribute. It will then be launched at Myay Maidan, Khongjom in Thoubai, Manipur.

The evening break was scheduled at 5:30 pm at Koirengei Bazar in Imphal. The night halt will be at Koujengleima Sports Association Football Ground in Imphal’s Sekmai.

Ahead of their departure from Delhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said on Sunday that the party aims to reach every house till people get the right to justice.

Telangana CM Reddy participates in Cong meet ahead of ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’

Revanth Reddy, the chief minister of Telangana, took part in the “Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra” planning meeting on Saturday at Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge’s Delhi home. The Yatra is scheduled to begin from Manipur on Saturday. CM Reddy is currently in the nation’s capital for a visit. Party leaders Rahul Gandhi and KC Venugopal attended the meeting in addition to Reddy and Kharge. Leading party figures will be present, with Congress President Kharge leading the yatra. The Yatra will end on March 20 in Mumbai, having traversed 6,713 km through 15 states.

Meanwhile, the party said on Saturday that the Yatra is an ideological battle the grand old party is waging against the “politics of polarisation and social, economic and political injustice”.

While the first yatra was for seeking love and harmony across the country against the politics of hate and violence, this yatra was for seeking justice for the people of the country. It includes social, economic and political justice,” he said.
