Death Toll Climbs to 21 in Punjab Hooch Tragedy; Opposition Calls for Bhagwant Mann’s Resignation

A total of at least 21 persons have lost their lives in the Amritsar district of Punjab after drinking illicit liquor, the third big hooch tragedy in the state in the past five years.

Victims from Multiple Villages in Majitha Subdivision of Punjab

The victims were from the Bhangali, Patalpuri, Marari Kalan, and Therewal villages in the Majitha subdivision in Amritsar, after locals drank spurious liquor. A number of persons were also hospitalized earlier on Tuesday.

The police have initiated an investigation and have arrested nine suspects and suspended four officials who were part of the case, including the excise and taxation officer and the deputy superintendent of police in the district. The police also found that methanol has been purchased in bulk online to prepare the hooch.

Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann’s Statement

In a post on X, Punjab’s chief minister Bhagwant Singh Mann said, “The sad news of the death of many people due to consumption of poisoned liquor has been received in the villages around Majitha. These killers of innocent people will not be spared at any cost. These are not deaths, but murders. These culprits who create mourning atmosphere in people’s homes with poisonous liquor will be punished strictly according to the law.”

He added, “I pray to God for the peace of the departed souls. The government stands with the affected families and will provide all possible help.”

Opposition parties criticized the Aam Admi Party government after 21 individuals died from drinking hooch in Punjab, alleging that the government had failed to curb the manufacturing of illicit liquor and the liquor mafia.

They demanded the resignation of Punjab’s CM Bhagwant Singh Mann and state excise minister Harpal Singh Cheema.

Congress Leader Partap Singh Bajwa’s Remarks

Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa said in a post on X, “Where is the so-called Yudh Nasheyan De Virodh now? @AAPPunjab govt has utterly failed to control the liquor mafia.”

The Punjab government had been conducting an anti-drug drive – Yudh Nasheyan De Virodh (war against drugs) – for the past 70 days.

“The CM, who is also Home Minister, is too busy with PR while illegal trade thrives. This is not governance this is criminal negligence. How many more lives will it take?” added Bajwa.

SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal’s Response

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal called the incident a “man-made tragedy” and accused the state of sponsoring the disaster.

“Illegal distilleries are flourishing, and innocent lives are being snuffed out. Where are our task forces, @BhagwantMann?” he said in a post on X.

He added, “This exposes the hollowness of your ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ slogan. Your inaction is criminal. You have no right to remain in office if you cannot curb this menace.”

Delhi Police Raids Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann’s Residence, AAP Claims BJP Involvement

Delhi Chief Minister Atishi on Thursday accused the BJP of staging a raid at Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann’s residence in the national capital. Atishi put up her allegations on X where she criticized the BJP for paying attention to Mann’s residence, instead of raising allegations against its own party.

“BJP people are distributing money, shoes, sheets in broad daylight – that is not visible. Instead, they go to raid the residence of an elected Chief Minister,” Atishi wrote. She added, “Wow BJP! People of Delhi will give their answer on the 5th.”

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) also alleged that officials from the Election Commission (EC) were present at the time of the raid and asked for their statement on this particular issue, suggesting that several authorities were involved.

Kejriwal to Visit Punjab’s Darbar Sahib for First Time Since Interim Bail in Liquor Case

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann addressed the media on Sunday, highlighting remarks made by the Supreme Court regarding the confinement of a national party’s convenor during electoral periods.

“Maintaining that the national convenor of a political party cannot be detained during elections, the Supreme Court’s stance is clear. This implies that the BJP seeks an unfair advantage by sidelining opposition leaders through incarceration. Winning elections is legitimate, but detaining individuals without evidence is unjust,” Mann articulated during his interaction with journalists in Delhi.

Expressing relief over Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s temporary release from custody, Mann emphasized its significance for the Aam Aadmi Party across various states.

“Kejriwal’s release is a significant development for us, be it in Punjab, Delhi, or Kurukshetra. His upcoming engagements in Lucknow and Maharashtra, aimed at upholding constitutional values, underscore our commitment,” Mann reiterated.

Responding to the BJP’s ambitious target of securing over 400 seats in the Lok Sabha elections, Mann expressed skepticism, asserting, “They won’t even secure a majority this time, let alone surpassing 400 seats.”

Tihar Jail officials stated that meetings with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal are scheduled based on the order of permission requests. Sunita Kejriwal’s visit to her husband is anticipated for next week, as per jail sources on Sunday.

The jail authorities mentioned that Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders Atishi and Bhagwant Mann had already secured permission for meetings with Kejriwal on April 29 and 30, respectively, by making prior requests. They added that permissions are granted in the order they are requested, and Sunita Kejriwal hadn’t made a prior request.

As per jail regulations, visits are limited to twice a week, with both slots for the upcoming week already allocated. Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21 in connection with a money laundering investigation related to alleged irregularities in the Delhi excise policy 2021-22, which has since been scrapped.

Arvind Kejriwal not to appear before the ED, heads to MP for election rally

The Delhi Chief Minister, who was called in relation to the purported Delhi Liquor scam case, has decided not to appear before the Enforcement Directorate. Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann are scheduled to visit Singrauli in Madhya Pradesh, where they are scheduled to deliver speeches at an election rally and conduct a road show. Prior to now, the Chief Minister of Delhi questioned the validity of the summons from the Enforcement Directorate that were sent to him. On October 30, Kejriwal responded to ED’s summons notice by requesting that the agency retract the notice and raising legal concerns.

Arvind Kejriwal was earlier summoned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in April this year, in connection with the case.
However, Kejriwal was not named as an accused in the first information report (FIR) filed by the CBI on August 17, last year.

Himachal CM meets Punjab counterpart Bhagwant Mann in Amritsar

Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu, the chief minister of Himachal Pradesh, met Bhagwant Mann, the chief minister of Punjab, on Tuesday in Amritsar. Key issues pertaining to the states of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh were discussed by both leaders. The main developmental issues facing both states were also discussed at the meeting. CM Bhagwant Mann directs officials to reach out to people as heavy rains continues

After rains lashed the border state for the past two days, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has directed officials to reach out to people in low-lying areas.

“It has been raining continuously for the last two days in Punjab, due to which people are facing difficulties in the low-lying areas and especially in the areas near the rivers. I have issued instructions to all my Ministers, MLAs and DCs and SSPs of all districts to reach out to people,” CM Bhagwant Mann said in a roughly hindi translated tweet on Sunday.

Following the severe rains, the city’s Sukhna Lake’s floodgates were opened after the water level rose, as shown in a viral video. The Meteorological Department of Chandigarh issued an orange signal for Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh on Saturday.

“Orange alert has been issued in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh. Monsoon is fully active in India. Monsoon has arrived in Punjab and Haryana before time. It usually arrives here by July 5. Now a Western Disturbance has become active. It will rain in both states today and tomorrow. Telecast rights of Gurbani: SGPC chief rejects Punjab government’s interference

Harjinder Singh Dhami, president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandhak Committee (SGPC), has denounced Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for saying that they will amend the Sikh Gurdwaras Act, 1925 to allow for the free telecast of “Gurbani” from the Golden Temple. He claims that the AAP government in the state is attempting to politicise the issue and has no right to make such changes.

“Punjab Government can’t interfere in any manner. They don’t have the right…They are trying to politicise this and I strongly condemn this. I urge Bhagwant Mann to not do anything like this,” Dhami. Dhami, who earlier addressed a press conference, said several people have spoken on the issue and “have spoken the truth.This is being done for political reasons, for political capital,” he said.

Ordinance row: Kejriwal meets Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren, seeks support

Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal, along with leaders of his party including Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann, met Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren at his official residence in Ranchi on Friday, to seek support against the Centre’s Ordinance on control over administrative services in Delhi.Yesterday, after meeting Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin in a bid to drum up support from the Opposition against the Centre’s ordinance, Kejriwal said that he was assured that DMK will stand by AAP and the people of Delhi. During his meeting with Tamil Nadu in Chennai on Thursday, Kejriwal was accompanied by Bhagwant Mann, party leaders Raghav Chaddha and Atishi.

Notably, Kejriwal had on May 23 embarked on a nationwide tour to seek support from the Opposition parties against the Ordinance. Taking to Twitter, the Delhi CM stated, “Will be meeting Tamil Nadu CM Thiru @mkstalin in Chennai tomorrow (1st June) to seek DMK’s support against Centre’s unconstitutional-undemocratic ‘Anti-Delhi’ Ordinance”.
“On June 2, I will meet the Chief Minister of Jharkhand Mr @HemantSorenJMM ji in Ranchi. Will seek their support against the ordinance passed by the Modi government against the people of Delhi,” Kejriwal had said in a tweet.

Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi and the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), visited the Yashwantrao Chavan Centre in Mumbai to meet with Sharad Pawar, the chief of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Thursday. The purpose of the meeting was to seek the NCP’s support against the central government’s ordinance regarding the control of administrative services in Delhi.

Accompanying Kejriwal were Bhagwant Mann, the Chief Minister of Punjab, Raghav Chadha, an AAP Member of Parliament, Atishi, a minister from Delhi, and other party leaders. Prior to this meeting, Kejriwal had also met with Uddhav Thackeray, the leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT), on Wednesday.

Kejriwal commenced a nationwide tour on Tuesday to garner support from opposition parties against the ordinance introduced by the central government, which pertains to the transfers and postings of bureaucrats in the national capital. Punjab to face electricity shortage: Haryana Power Minister takes dig at Bhagwant Mann

Haryana Power Minister Ranjit Singh on Monday took a swipe at the Bhagwant Mann government’s decision to change government offices’ timings in the state to ease the load on electricity demand during summer, and said Punjab will face a shortage of electricity in the coming days.

“Haryana does not supply free electricity that’s why Haryana does not have any shortage of electricity and we are supplying the electricity without any cutoff and will supply it in the future, we are taking care of the facilities for our people”, Singh said while boasting that Haryana does not face any shortage of electricity. “We didn’t even increase the electricity rates for many years but electricity is being provided to people.

While Punjab government is distributing free electricity and is now starting to face problems. Due to this reason, the state government ordered to change the office timings from 7:30 am to 2:00 pm and we think that in the coming days, Punjab will face a shortage of electricity,” he added.

According to the police, a case has been registered against unknown people for threatening Moose wala’s father. On March 7, Singh held a protest outside the Punjab Assembly and demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigation into the murder of his son.

Speaking to media persons outside the Punjab Assembly, Singh said no investigation is happening in his favour. “In the last 10 months, I went to Police and Administration several times. I was assured. But what’s happening here is being done to brush under the carpet the murder of my child. Nothing is going in my favour. Punjab Govt changes office timings, to function from 7.30 am to 2 pm

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday announced new office hours for all the state government offices ahead of the summer season.

As per the new timing, all the state government offices would operate from 7.30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The new timings will be in effect from 2 May to 15 July, during the summer season. According to CM Mann, the new office hours help save electricity in the states and give visitors to government offices some respite from the summer heat.

In his address, Bhagwant Mann said, “Our government runs on new ideas, new thought processes, and new blood. Keeping that in mind, we have decided to change the government’s working hours from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. This will be implemented from 2 May through 15 July”.

Punjab: CM Mann announces increase in crop loss compensation

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann held a meeting with officials and discussed the matter of compensating farmers for crop losses due to bad weather.

There are reports of heavy damage to crops due to bad weather in North India. The crops of the farmers in many districts of Punjab were ruined, after which the farmers demanded compensation. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and several other officials personally visited the crop fields to assess the damage caused to the crops. After assessing the crops, he held a meeting with the officials.

Taking this to Twitter, CM Bhagwant Mann released a video on his personal account saying, ‘We have changed the method of compensation of the previous government, and now, unlike the previous government, we will not only announce the compensation but will also give it.’

He said that we will not distribute checks for Rs 54 or Rs 111, but farmers will be given timely compensation in a transparent manner. CM Bhagwant Mann said that earlier, 12 thousand rupees were given for 75 percent to 100 percent loss, but now 15 thousand rupees will be given for 75 percent to 100 percent loss. In the previous government, Rs 5400 was given for a 33 to 50 percent loss, but now Rs 6750 will be given.

Taking it to the CMO Punjab Twitter account, he said, “The laborer’s will get 10 percent as compensation, of which Rs 95,100 will be paid as compensation for complete house damage and Rs 5,200 will be given for minor damage to houses. The state government will soon introduce a crop insurance scheme for farmers”.

Punjab CM to take action against ex-Punjab DGP, others over PM’s security breach

Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann, has decided to take disciplinary action against several police officials, including former DGP of the state, in connection with the breach of security of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Punjab back in January 2022.

An official letter of the government of Punjab revealed that CM Mann has decided to initiate disciplinary proceedings against the likes of Sidharth Chattopadhyay, the then DGP Punjab, Inderbir Singh, the then DIG, Ferozepur Range and Harmandeep Singh Hans, the then SSP Ferozepur.

Earlier, on 14 March, Chief Secretary of Punjab, Vijay Kumar Janjua said that the state government will soon submit the “interim” report to the Ministry of Home Affairs, regarding the security breach during the visit of PM.

This news came to spotlight after the Central government demanded a detailed action-taken report from the government of Punjab. According to the statement given by the sources, a letter was sent by the MHA to the Punjab government, seeking a detailed action taken report.

Earlier, the Chief Secretary said that the government has received the reports of the inquiry conducted by a panel constituted by the Supreme Court into the incident. He also revealed that the matter is under consideration.

A report submitted six months ago by the Supreme Court-appointed inquiry committee looking into the security breach during PM Modi’s visit to Punjab on January, 2022, blamed then-state Chief Secretary Anirudh Tewari, Police Chief S Chattopadhyaya, and other top officers.

Congress MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary dies during Bharat Jodo Yatra

Punjab: Police lash out at farmers protesting outside CM’s resident in Sangrur

In front of the rented residence of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday, the Sangrur Police lashed out at protesting farm workers. The workers urged that the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act of 2005 (MGNREGA) be amended to raise the minimum daily pay to Rs. 700, adopt five-marla plot plans for Dalits, and provide the community the third share of common panchayat land on lease.

Under the banner of the Sanjha Mazdoor Morcha, an alliance of eight labour organisations, they were demonstrating. Around three o’clock in the afternoon, hundreds of agricultural labourers from Sangrur assembled near the Patiala-Bathinda road and marched in that direction.

The cops began using force on them and even used a lathi charge after they got outside the private colony where Mann’s house is located.

Manpreet Singh, the SP for Sangrur, organised the cane-charging and was seen in footage hitting protesters. In the videos, he is seen ordering other cops and hitting protesters.
