The cyclone, which made landfall around 8:30 pm on Sunday, began moving northwards and is continuing to do so, gradually weakening on Monday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

“Cyclonic Storm Remal over Coastal Bangladesh and adj Coastal West Bengal is about 40 km northwest of Mongla, 90 km east of Kolkata, 90 km northeast of Canning. System is initially likely to move north-northeastwards, subsequently northeastwards and gradually weaken further,” the IMD said in its bulletin.

The cyclone caused massive damage and disruption in West Bengal and nearby regions, prompting the authorities to evacuate over a million people during the past two days.

West Bengal, Odisha, and nearby areas witnessed heavy rainfall with gusty winds on Sunday, causing waterlogging in several parts.

According to reports, three people have been injured in rain-related incidents in Kolkata.

Reports of trees uprooting also came to light from Bengal’s Southern Avenue, Lake Place, Chetla, D L Khan Road, Dufferin Road, Ballygunge Road, New Alipore, Behala, Jadavpur, Golpark, Hatibagan, Jagat Mukherjee Park and College Street, as well as the city’s adjoining Salt Lake area, reported PTI.

With the cyclone, the IMD has forecasted mild to moderate rainfall in most areas and heavy to very heavy rainfall in a few locations across the eastern districts of Gangetic West Bengal, which is next to Bangladesh, and the coastal districts of West Bengal on Monday.

Along with light to moderate rainfall in most areas, the meteorological service has projected that on May 27 and 28, there will likely be isolated areas of heavy to very heavy rainfall in Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, and Tripura.

Meanwhile, the IMD issued a ‘red’ alert in two districts of Tripura – Sepahijala and Gumati – because of the possible impact of cyclone Remal.

At least seven people lost their lives and millions more went without power for more than 12 hours as Cyclone “Remal” pounded the shores of Bangladesh with destructive winds reaching up to 120 kmph. Areas like Barisal, Bhola, Patuakhali, Satkhira, and Chattogram were severely damaged by the storm.

According to officials, one person was washed away by a storm surge while returning home to bring his sister and aunt to a shelter in Patulakhali, while another died in Satkhira after falling as he ran for cover during the storm, reported PTI. Five people were reportedly killed in Barishal, Bhola and Chattogram in rain-related incidents.

Meanwhile, the Bangladeshi authorities evacuated nearly 800,000 people from vulnerable areas on Sunday.

The IMD had previously issued a yellow alert for several districts of West Bengal and a red alert for fishermen in the state.

Director General of Meteorology, IMD, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra says, “Today morning, a depression developed in the Bay of Bengal… It has slowly started moving towards north-north-east directions. As it starts moving northwards tomorrow, it will intensify and develop into a cyclone storm tomorrow morning. And by tomorrow night, it will develop into a severe cyclonic storm. By the midnight of 26 May, it will hit coastal areas of West Bengal when the wind speed will be 110-120 kmph. The wind speed is expected to be higher in Bangladesh. In the North and South 24 Parganas and East Medinipur districts of West Bengal wind speed will be highest. As a result, light to moderate rainfall will begin tomorrow. On 26-27 May, in addition to heavy to very heavy rainfall in West Bengal, extremely heavy rainfall is also expected. </excerpt>

The low-pressure area over the southwest and adjacent west-central Bay of Bengal moved northeastwards and settled over the west-central and adjacent south Bay of Bengal by Thursday morning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that cyclone ‘Remal’ is expected to form over the east-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of May 25.

According to the IMD, this cyclone will likely move northwards, reaching near the Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts by the evening of May 26, as a severe cyclonic storm with wind speeds of 100 to 120 kmph.

The IMD stated, “It is very likely to continue to move northeastwards and concentrate into a Depression over central parts of the Bay of Bengal by the morning of May 24. Thereafter, it is very likely to continue to move northeastwards, intensifying further into a cyclonic storm over the east-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of May 25.”

Roxy Mathew Koll, a climate scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, had warned on Sunday that a low-pressure system would develop in the south Bay of Bengal during May 22-23.

Koll explained, “Sea surface temperatures in the south Bay of Bengal have been 2-3°C warmer than usual for quite some time. Persistently high sea surface temperatures provide a constant supply of heat and moisture, essential for cyclone formation. The Madden Julian Oscillation, an eastward traveling band of clouds, coupled with the winds and warm ocean waters, is moving to the south of the Bay of Bengal. These winds provide a rotational trigger for the cyclones to initiate.” He added, “The restricting factor could be a quick northward progression of the monsoon, suppressing the vertical formation of the cyclone.”

Koll noted that if this is the case, the low-pressure area will become a monsoon depression, bringing rain. “Otherwise, it could develop into a weak cyclone of short duration,” he said.

According to the Chief Minister, the state should expect a lot of rain during the cyclonic storm.

He advised the concerned departments to take preventative action and suggested that those who would be affected be relocated to relief camps.
He stated that district collectors are responsible for securing food, electricity, and other necessities.
According to the Chief Minister, action needs to be taken to stop any electrical leaks. According to him, trees that fall as a result of a cyclone should be removed as soon as possible.
Stalin emphasized the importance of keeping food centers and emergency rooms stocked in order to provide aid to those in need.

The first post-monsoon cyclonic storm is expected to form over the west-central Bay of Bengal around the weekend and will impact the coasts of north Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and West Bengal, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The cyclone will be named Sitrang once it has formed.

According to Ananda Kumar Das, head of IMD’s cyclone monitoring division, cyclones in the post-monsoon season have been more severe than those in the pre-monsoon season over the last 20 years. “So, we are expecting this system also to intensify further.”

A low-pressure area was expected to form over the southeast and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal, then move west-northwestwards and concentrate into a depression over the Central Bay of Bengal by Saturday morning. According to IMD, it was very likely to intensify into a cyclone over the westcentral Bay of Bengal later.

Das stated that there is currently a lot of disagreement among models regarding the location of the cyclone. “…but most of them are indicating that the location is likely to be between north Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal coasts. It is expected to make landfall on October 25 [Tuesday] but as of today [Tuesday] we are not forecasting any location for landfall because the system has not developed yet.”

Das stated that the atmospheric and oceanic conditions were favourable for the development of cyclones. “The Bay’s sea surface temperature is also higher than usual.” Furthermore, from October 22 to 25, this system will be moving over the ocean, which can provide it with a lot of energy.”

Separately, conditions were expected to improve for further monsoon withdrawal from more parts of Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Jharkhand, interior Odisha, and the entire West Bengal, while isolated heavy rainfall was expected to continue in some parts of the south Peninsular this week.
