The violence has drawn political attention.
</excerpt>

Protests supporting Gaza erupted across Bangladesh in cities like Dhaka, Sylhet, Bogra, and Chittagong. People gathered to condemn Israel’s military actions and express solidarity with Palestinians. However, the situation quickly turned violent as protesters began targeting global brands they believed had links to Israel.

Protesters Accused Global Brands of Supporting Israel

Many demonstrators accused international companies such as Bata, KFC, and Pizza Hut of either supporting Israel or being associated with Israeli interests. This belief led to attacks on several brand outlets. In Bogra, hundreds marched with placards and shouted anti-Israel slogans. Protesters threw bricks at a Bata showroom, smashing its glass walls. The employees locked the doors from inside, which prevented more damage. Bogra Sadar police officer SM Moinuddin said that although protesters caused some destruction, no serious incident occurred.

Violence Escalated in Sylhet and Chittagong

In Sylhet, demonstrators stormed into a KFC outlet and destroyed soft drink bottles that they believed were linked to Israeli companies. Police arrived and shut the restaurant down. Protesters demanded that the Bangladeshi government and the United Nations boycott Israeli products and take firm action against what they described as brutal killings in Gaza. In Chittagong, the violence grew more intense. Protesters hurled bricks, stones, and shoes at KFC and Pizza Hut outlets, shattering their glass fronts. Local police officer Mohammad Solaiman stated that they were investigating the incident and had restored calm by the evening.

Islamist mobs in #Bangladesh went on a rampage today looting and destroying KFC, Bata, Dominos, and Pizza Hut outlets.
Why?
To protest against Israel’s retaliation in Palestine.
Why these brands?
They believe these are owned by Jews.
Bangladeshi franchise owners bore the loss. pic.twitter.com/omlp8HiqW3

In Cox’s Bazar, demonstrators threw stones at the logos and signboards of KFC and Pizza Hut. Police officer Elias Khan said there was no damage inside the restaurants, only attacks on the exterior signs. However, some eyewitnesses claimed that nearby businesses were also affected during the protest.

Bata Denied Any Ties to Israel

Following the attacks, Bata released a public statement denying any connection to Israel. The company clarified that it had no political affiliations in the Israel-Palestine conflict. It said that Bata was a privately held, family-owned company founded in the Czech Republic and had no links to Israel.

The violence led to political tensions in the country. The interim government, led by Dr Muhammad Yunus, condemned the unrest. Meanwhile, the Awami League, headed by the ousted Sheikh Hasina, criticized the government’s handling of the protests. The party warned that the situation had become a national emergency and claimed that Bangladesh risked becoming the next Afghanistan if the global community remained silent. The Awami League also called for Dr Yunus to resign and urged international intervention.

Dr Yunus, who had earlier voiced support for Palestine, condemned the violent incidents and assured strict action. He said the police had acted swiftly and treated the attacks as a threat to public safety and law. Authorities arrested 49 people and filed two legal cases. Investigations were ongoing, and police were reviewing video footage to identify more suspects. Security forces also conducted raids on Monday night to track down others involved in the violence.

</excerpt>

Bangladesh’s security forces have arrested 1,308 people under Operation Devil Hunt, an overnight crackdown launched amid widespread unrest. The operation was ordered by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus after violent clashes injured student activists near the residence of an Awami League leader in Gazipur, on the outskirts of Dhaka.

Mass Arrests Across Bangladesh

According to major media reports:

274 individuals were arrested in metropolitan cities.

81 activists of the deposed Awami League were detained in Gazipur.

Law enforcement, including army troops, police, and specialized units, is involved in the operation.

Why Was Operation Devil Hunt Launched?

Authorities claim the crackdown is targeting groups attempting to destabilize the country. According to Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, the operation will continue until all those responsible for violence are arrested.

The recent violence erupted on Friday night, when 14 individuals were injured in Gazipur’s Dakshinkhan area while attacking the residence of former Liberation War Affairs Minister Mozammel Haque.

Sheikh Hasina’s Exile and Rising Political Tensions

Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, 77, fled to India after her government was toppled on August 5, 2024, following a student-led mass uprising. Many of her senior Awami League colleagues have either been arrested or gone into hiding. Hasina faces multiple charges, including crimes against humanity for her crackdown on July protests.

Protests and Political Reactions

The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement claims its activists were attacked while preventing looting. In response, they held a day-long protest in Gazipur, where a student was later shot outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office.

Meanwhile, the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Khaleda Zia, has urged the government to curb mob violence and restore law and order. The BNP has announced a nationwide rally series starting February 11, demanding an electoral roadmap.

Government’s Response and Future Actions

A command center has been established to coordinate the crackdown and improve response times. Home Affairs Advisor Jahangir Alam Chowdhury confirmed that those responsible for recent student attacks would face maximum punishment.

As tensions rise, Bangladesh’s interim government remains firm in its pledge to restore stability, with Operation Devil Hunt continuing indefinitely.

Hindu students have presented demands for legal and political reforms amid widespread violence.
</excerpt>

Bangladesh’s interim leader, Muhammad Yunus, has scheduled a meeting with Hindu students and youth leaders on Monday, August 12, to discuss the recent surge in attacks against religious minorities in the country. The meeting aims to address the protection of the Hindu community and to find solutions to the ongoing crisis in Bangladesh. Yunus, who assumed office as the head of the interim government on August 3, has condemned the attacks on minorities, describing them as “heinous” and emphasizing the need for unity.

Violence Against Minorities Sparks Concern

The meeting comes in response to reports of widespread violence targeting Hindus and other minorities since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government on August 5. As the largest minority group in Bangladesh, Hindus have faced at least 205 incidents of attacks across 52 districts. In a statement released on Sunday, the Yunus-led interim Cabinet expressed “grave concern” over these attacks and announced plans to engage with representatives from minority groups to resolve the situation.

Hindu Students Present 8-Point Demand Charter

Ahead of the meeting, Hindu students have prepared an eight-point demand charter, which includes calls for the establishment of special tribunals to expedite trials of those persecuting minorities, compensation for victims, and the enactment of a minority protection law. Additional demands include the allocation of 10 percent of parliamentary seats for minorities, the creation of a ministry of minority affairs, a five-day holiday during Durga Puja, upgrading the Hindu Religious Welfare Trust to a foundation, and modernizing the Pali Education Board.

Protests by Hindus and Other Minorities

On Sunday, August 11, Hindus and other minority groups, under the banner of the ‘Bangladesh Hindu, Buddha, Christian Unity Group,’ held a large protest rally against the attacks following Sheikh Hasina’s resignation. Protesters carried placards with messages like “Save Bangladeshi Hindu Society” and “Save Hindus,” while waving both the Bangladeshi national flag and a saffron flag depicting Lord Ram with “Jai Shri Ram” written on it. The rally highlighted the ongoing struggle for safety and recognition among minority communities in Bangladesh.

</excerpt>

Michael Kugelman, Director of the South Asia Institute at The Wilson Center, expressed concerns about violence against minorities, especially Hindus, in Bangladesh. He noted that “meaningful progress would be challenging until these attacks are halted and law and order issues are resolved. Kugelman also dismissed claims of foreign interference in the uprising that led to Sheikh Hasina’s removal, stating there is no “plausible evidence” to support such allegations.

In an interview with ANI, Kugelman said, “A few stories are playing out in Bangladesh that deserve more scrutiny, investigation…the issue of attacks and threats on minorities, particularly the minority Hindu communities. We know the documented cases of members of the Hindu society being attacked…On Friday there was a large protest in Dhaka in which people were calling for more protection of the Hindu community.” The US-based foreign policy expert also pointed out the problem of misinformation surrounding the situation in Bangladesh, stressing that media outlets need to tackle this issue. “But there has been a lot of misinformation as well. Many of these reports are actually not true. The problem with misinformation is it can distract from the fact that bad things are happening…so I really hope that the Bangladesh media and other foreign media on the ground will continue to look into this,” Kugelman added.

“I underscore something that I said earlier, I think it would be very difficult for Bangladesh to make meaningful progress and peaceful political transition, so long as attacks on the law and order situation, which includes attacks, threats on religious minorities, particularly Hindus, are not addressed,” he said.

Kugelman rejected claims by Sheikh Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, that foreign interference was behind the protests, stating instead that the unrest was fuelled by “internal factors.” He also pointed out that the Hasina government’s severe response to the protesters intensified the movement.

“My view has been very simple. I see this as a crisis that was driven by purely internal factors, by students who were unhappy about a particular issue, job quotas that they didn’t like and they were worried about the government. Sheikh Hasina’s government cracked down very hard on the students and that then turned the movement into something much bigger. And this was simply driven by internal factors,” Kugelman said.

“Now, you know, when there is a conspiracy theory that is rooted in issues of foreign influence, one cannot disprove such type of allegation. Also, at the same time, one cannot conclusively prove it. I think the onus, is the responsibility to provide a plausible explanation for how it can be true. I am yet to hear that from Sheikh Hasina’s son, from anyone,” he added.

He described the political instability in Bangladesh as a “troubling situation,” noting that achieving a “peaceful political transition” will be a very challenging task.

Kugelman noted, “Well, it certainly is a very troubling situation. Whenever I’m asked what I think the top priority of the interim government should be, I say and continue to believe that it’s restoring law and order. It’s clear that there’s significant amounts of instability right now, and I think it’s still unclear what the scale of that violence is. But I think that it’s going to be very difficult to make meaningful efforts to affect a peaceful political transition until the violence and the unrest subsides. And I think that there needs to be a lot more work, a lot more investigation as to exactly what is going on, particularly in terms of the scale, but I and so many others are of course very concerned about this current level of violence and unrest.”

“With the police not having a major presence on the ground and with the army seemingly reluctant to play that role of trying to impose law and order, there’s a vacuum, there’s a security vacuum that I think that violent actors will and have taken advantage of, and this is certainly very concerning,” he added.

Bangladesh is facing a dynamic political situation, as Sheikh Hasina stepped down as Prime Minister on August 5 amid escalating protests. Initially led by students calling for the abolition of a quota system for government jobs, the protests gradually transformed into broader anti-government demonstrations.

Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi sent a letter to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Thursday, asking for his help in stopping the violence against Hindus in Bangladesh. Krishnamoorthi urged Blinken to speak with Muhammad Yunus, who is leading Bangladesh’s interim government as of August 8, to put an end to the violence and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

In a letter to Blinken, Krishnamoorthi said, “I am writing to you regarding the fluid situation in Bangladesh and the rise of coordinated anti-Hindu violence in the wake of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation. Now that Muhammad Yunus is sworn in as Prime Minister for the interim government, it is of utmost urgency that the United States engage with his government for the purposes of both bringing the violence to an end and the perpetrators to justice.”

Muhammad Yunus was inaugurated as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government on August 8, following Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and departure from the country amid extensive unrest. On Thursday, 17 members of the interim government were sworn in during a ceremony in Dhaka. Nobel laureate economist Muhammad Yunus, 84, took the oath as the chief advisor, a role equivalent to prime minister, administered by President Mohammed Shahabuddin.

Director General of Police (DGP) G.P. Singh confirmed that the Centre has mandated strict measures to ensure that no unauthorized individuals cross the border into India.

“The Border Security Force (BSF) serves as the primary defense along the border, while the Assam Police provides additional security. We are maintaining high alert status,” Singh said during a book launch event on Saturday. He noted that Indian passport holders, primarily students and traders, will be permitted entry into India if their documents are verified as valid. Similarly, Bangladeshi citizens will be escorted back to their country following verification of their passports and visas.

Singh assured that the Assam Police, in coordination with the BSF, are conducting joint patrols to secure the border and prevent unauthorized crossings. He also emphasized that no illegal entries have been reported so far.

Regarding the upcoming Independence Day celebrations, Singh highlighted that comprehensive security measures are in place. “Superintendents of Police (SPs) have been instructed to enhance security at parade grounds across the state,” he added.

The DGP recently conducted a security review in Upper Assam’s districts amid reports of ULFA (I) militants operating near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border. He discussed the situation with police, military, and paramilitary forces, stressing the need to neutralize the militant group.

Singh appealed to ULFA (I) to refrain from violence and disruptiveness, especially as the state experiences economic growth due to increased investments. He extended an invitation to the militant group for dialogue, stating that both central and state governments are open to negotiations.

The enhanced security measures reflect the state’s commitment to maintaining order and safety amid the current regional challenges.

</excerpt>

A significant demonstration took place outside the Houses of Parliament in London on Saturday, as a large crowd gathered to express their outrage over alleged violence against minority Hindus and other groups in Bangladesh. This protest followed the recent resignation and departure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Participants in the rally waved Bangladeshi flags and held up signs with messages such as “Protect Our Temples in Bangladesh,” “Hindu Lives Matter,” and “We Want Justice.” The crowd chanted slogans calling for peace and equality amidst a troubling rise in violence.

The protest drew a diverse group, including activists from human rights organizations, members of the Bangladeshi diaspora, and Indian-American Hindu allies standing in solidarity with Bangladesh’s Hindu community.

Unadi, a Bangladeshi protester, voiced his concerns about the vulnerability of Hindus in Bangladesh. He criticized the majority population for preventing minorities from speaking out against injustices, stating, “Our country gained independence in 1971 to ensure peaceful coexistence for all communities. Yet now, we face violence perpetrated by the majority, forcing many to flee.”

Unadi stressed the need for a shift in mindset to achieve peaceful coexistence. He highlighted the contrast between Bangladesh and other nations, where minority protections are upheld, urging for a similar approach in his home country.

A representative from the Bengali Christian Association in the UK called for constitutional reforms, noting that the current constitution designates Bangladesh as a Muslim country despite the contributions of all communities to its independence. She emphasized the need for equal treatment for all citizens.

Another protester decried the ongoing violence, reporting that many minorities in Bangladesh are being driven out of their homes. “For the past several days, our houses have been torched and our communities terrorized. We demand an end to these atrocities and the right to live safely in our own country.”

One protester shared a personal account, revealing that his home in Bangladesh had recently been looted and burned. “My house was destroyed. Just days ago, many people raided and set it on fire,” he said.

The demonstration aimed to raise awareness and prompt action to address the severe issues facing minorities in Bangladesh, highlighting the urgent need for international support and intervention.

</excerpt>

Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat strongly refuted comparisons between India’s current situation and the recent unrest in Bangladesh, asserting that India, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, is distinct and resilient. Speaking to reporters at Jodhpur airport on Saturday, Minister Shekhawat addressed remarks suggesting that a Bangladesh-like scenario could unfold in India, condemning such statements as misguided and unfounded.

“It is unfortunate that some individuals have speculated about a Bangladesh-like situation arising in India. They probably don’t realize that this is not Bangladesh; this is India—Modi ji’s India,” Shekhawat stated, emphasizing the stability and strength of the country under the current government. “Those who think they can replicate such a scenario here should understand the consequences they would face,” he added.

Although Minister Shekhawat did not specifically name any individuals, his comments were widely interpreted as a response to recent statements made by senior Congress leaders Salman Khurshid and Mani Shankar Aiyar. Earlier this week, Khurshid, during a book release event, had expressed concern that the situation in Bangladesh could potentially be mirrored in India, a sentiment echoed by Aiyar in subsequent remarks.

Regarding the ongoing situation in Bangladesh, Minister Shekhawat described it as “unexpected and unacceptable,” assuring that the Indian government is closely monitoring developments. He expressed hope that law and order would soon be restored in the neighboring country.

In addition to addressing the Bangladesh comparison, Shekhawat touched upon tourism initiatives in Rajasthan. He highlighted the allocation of four circuits to the state under the Swadesh Darshan Yojana, noting that this was just the beginning of a larger collaborative effort with the state government to boost tourism in the region.

“Tourism is a state subject according to the Constitution, and these circuits were granted during Prime Minister Modi’s second term. We look forward to working closely with the state government to enhance tourism across the entire region,” Shekhawat said. He also mentioned the ongoing construction of a new terminal building at Jodhpur airport, with more than 45 percent of the work completed. The terminal is expected to be inaugurated by the end of the year, marking a significant upgrade in the region’s infrastructure.

</excerpt>

Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, 84, was officially sworn in as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government in a ceremony held in Dhaka on Thursday night. The swearing-in followed weeks of intense student-led protests that culminated in the resignation and flight of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to neighboring India.

During the ceremony, Yunus pledged to “uphold, support, and protect the constitution” and vowed to perform his duties with sincerity. His immediate priorities are to restore peace in Bangladesh and oversee the preparation for new elections.

The oath was administered by Bangladesh’s figurehead President Mohammed Shahabuddin at the presidential palace in Dhaka, in the presence of foreign diplomats, civil society members, prominent business figures, and members of the former opposition party. Notably, no representatives from Hasina’s party were in attendance.

The interim Cabinet, consisting of 16 members, has been formed with individuals primarily drawn from civil society, including two leaders from the student protests. These members were selected following discussions among student leaders, civil society representatives, and the military earlier in the week.

Sheikh Hasina resigned on Monday after several weeks of escalating chaos that began in July, initially sparked by protests against a controversial quota system for government jobs. Critics argued the system favored those with connections to Hasina’s party. The demonstrations quickly escalated into a broader challenge to Hasina’s 15-year rule, resulting in the deaths of over 300 people, including students, amid increasing violence.

Yunus, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for his pioneering work in microcredit, was in Paris for the 2024 Olympics when he was selected for the interim leadership role. He returned to Bangladesh earlier on Thursday under tight security at Dhaka’s airport. Upon his arrival, Yunus addressed the media, emphasizing his commitment to restoring order in the country. “Bangladesh is a family. We have to unite it,” he stated, alongside student leaders. “It has immense possibility.”

In a call for calm, Yunus had urged an end to partisan violence during a statement in Paris on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, who serves as an adviser to his mother, declared on Wednesday that his family and the Awami League party would continue to play a role in Bangladesh’s politics. This marked a reversal from his earlier statement following Hasina’s resignation and departure to India.

On Tuesday, the president dissolved Parliament, paving the way for the interim government to take charge.

In a related development, a tribunal in Dhaka acquitted Yunus on Wednesday in a labor law violation case involving a telecommunications company he founded. Previously, Yunus had been convicted and sentenced to six months in jail, though he was released on bail during the appeal process.

Yunus has long been a critic of Sheikh Hasina, who had labeled him a “bloodsucker,” accusing him of using coercive methods to extract loan repayments from the rural poor, particularly women. Yunus has consistently denied these allegations.

</excerpt>

Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged calm and restraint following the recent political unrest in Bangladesh. The ministry showed support for the violence’s victims and highlighted the importance of a structured return to democratic procedures. “We call for calm and restraint by all and stress the importance of an orderly return to the democratic process. We are confident that the strong and resilient people of Bangladesh will be able to ensure a smooth transition towards peace and stability,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal said in a statement on Wednesday.

The Ministry also offered condolences to the families of those who were killed in the recent violence. “We are deeply concerned about the loss of lives and properties during the protests over the last few weeks in Bangladesh. We convey our sincere condolences and sympathies to the families of those who lost their lives and wish all those injured a speedy and full recovery,” it added.

In view to the ongoing unrest in Bangladesh, the North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) has appealed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah to take action against illegal immigration into the North Eastern states from Bangladesh. The organisation has also asked that no Bangladeshi nationals be granted asylum or allowed to settle in the North East region.

In a letter to the Union Home Minister, NESO emphasised the need for the government of India to ensure that the border between North East India and Bangladesh is rigorously and effectively monitored to detect any attempts at illegal migration from across the border. “The NESO would like to draw your attention with regard to the tumultuous events in the neighbouring country of Bangladesh where a civil war-like situation is taking place. Such a situation can have serious ramifications in India, especially in the North East Region where four states share a common international boundary with Bangladesh,” the NESO said.

</excerpt>

India has announced the closure of all visa application centers in Bangladesh until further notice, following the resignation and flight of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina amid intense unrest. The online portal for Indian visa applications now displays a message stating, “All IVACs will remain closed till further notice, due to unstable situation. Next application date will be informed through SMS & It is requested to pick up the passport on the next working day.”

This decision comes a day after India evacuated non-essential staff and their families from its High Commission and consulates in Bangladesh. Despite the evacuations, Indian diplomats remain in the country and the missions continue to function, according to government sources.

India operates a high commission in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, along with consulates in Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna, and Sylhet. The political turmoil, marked by massive protests against Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government, has led the 76-year-old leader to resign and seek refuge in India.

An interim government, supported by the military, is currently being formed. Nobel laureate and Grameen Bank founder Muhammad Yunus is set to lead this caretaker government.

In a recent address to Parliament, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar discussed the situation in the neighboring country. He highlighted that there are approximately 19,000 Indian nationals in Bangladesh, including 9,000 students, many of whom have returned to India following the outbreak of protests. The Indian government is maintaining close contact with the Indian community in Bangladesh and is closely monitoring the situation, particularly concerning the safety of minorities living in the country.

</excerpt>

Amid the violent protests in Bangladesh, which resulted in Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and departure from the country, a troubling incident has emerged involving singer Rahul Ananda. The cultural activist, residing in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi 32, was attacked at his home. Ananda, along with his wife and teenage son, managed to escape the attack.

According to the Bangladeshi English-language daily, Daily Star, attackers forcibly entered Ananda’s home by breaking the main gate and looted the premises. The house, a 140-year-old historic site that had been visited by French President Emmanuel Macron in 2023, was ransacked. The intruders stole everything they could find, including 3,000 handmade musical instruments created by Ananda over the years. The family is currently in hiding at an undisclosed location, as reported by Saiful Jurnal, a founding member of Ananda’s band Joler Gaan.

Who is Rahul Ananda?

Rahul Ananda leads the folk band Joler Gaan. Born in Moulvi Bazar in 1976, he earned a Master’s degree in Fine Arts with a specialization in Graphic Design from the University of Dhaka. In addition to his music career, he is a well-known actor with the Bangladeshi theater group Prachyanat. Ananda has also participated in eight residency programs across various countries including the UK, Japan, India, Egypt, and Brazil, showcasing his skills as a visual artist, musician, and actor.

Following the attack, Joler Gaan shared a song titled “Love, Peace, and Solidarity” on their official Facebook page. The post explained that the song was recorded in the now-destroyed recording studio. “This song was the last recorded song in this room. What you see in the video, none of that exists today. Amid the unrest, music united us. This song is our parting gift to everyone,” the caption, originally in Bengali, read.

Recent protests in Bangladesh have intensified over the past few weeks, sparked by student demonstrations demanding job quota reforms and Sheikh Hasina’s resignation. Many Hindu celebrities’ homes and businesses have been set on fire following Hasina’s escape.

Political Developments in Bangladesh

In response to the escalating violence, which was sparked by protests against a controversial quota system reserving 30% of public service jobs for the relatives of war veterans, student leaders, politicians, the President, and the Army chief have agreed to dissolve the Parliament. Nobel laureate and economist Muhammad Yunus has been appointed as the chief advisor to the new interim government proposed by the student protesters.

Allegations of External Influence

The protests against the quota system led to widespread violence and disruption, with the Awami League government accused of brutally suppressing dissent. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has alleged that the Bangladesh National Party (BNP), led by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, and Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh, were behind the violence. Jamaat-e-Islami is rumored to have connections with Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), and reports suggest that students affiliated with Jamaat-e-Islami have infiltrated protests, instigating violence and using fake identities.

The Awami League government has recently banned Jamaat-e-Islami, which is also suspected of participating in madrasa activities and the “India Out” campaign following Hasina’s contentious election victory. Indian Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has also suggested the possibility of foreign forces influencing the recent events in Bangladesh.

Ongoing Diplomatic and Political Tensions

The situation highlights complex regional dynamics, including allegations of external influence and internal political struggles, as Bangladesh navigates a period of significant upheaval.

Diplomatic sources indicate that after her stay in India, Hasina is expected to fly to London. It remains unclear whether she will continue her journey to London on the same aircraft or switch to a different plane.

A senior Air Force officer was on hand to receive the former Bangladeshi leader. The Indian government, while not officially commenting on the situation in Dhaka, has been providing safe passage through its airspace following a request from the Bangladeshi authorities.

Earlier today, Bangladesh Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman confirmed Hasina’s resignation and announced that an interim government would be established. In his televised address, General Zaman stated, “I’m taking all responsibility (of the country).
Sheikh Hasina fled Bangladesh after violent protests erupted, resulting in over 100 deaths in just two days. The protests were triggered by the controversial quota system that reserved 30 percent of civil service jobs for families of veterans from the 1971 liberation war.

Reports suggest that Hasina’s departure was on the advice of her security team, as she was not prepared to leave under such circumstances. In response to the unfolding situation, Delhi police have heightened security around the Bangladesh High Commission, increasing both barricades and police presence to ensure safety.

The situation continues to develop, with the Indian government and diplomatic community closely monitoring the events in Dhaka.

</excerpt>

Sheikh Hasina has resigned as Prime Minister of Bangladesh in the wake of intense anti-government protests and has reportedly departed for London. Sources close to the situation confirmed her departure on Monday.

According to reports from Dhaka, Sheikh Hasina’s resignation was announced earlier today, followed by her immediate departure from the country. ProthomAlo reported that her military helicopter took off from Bangabhaban, the official residence of the Bangladesh President, at 2:30 PM local time. Sheikh Rehana, Hasina’s younger sister, accompanied her on the flight, with initial reports suggesting their destination was West Bengal, India.

Tensions escalated when protesters breached the gates of Gono Bhaban, Hasina’s residence, around 3 PM today, as reported by The Daily Star. Thousands of participants in the Anti-Discrimination Students’ Movement gathered at Mirpur 10 and marched towards Farmgate, demanding the resignation of Hasina and her cabinet. The movement had earlier declared a singular demand for Hasina’s resignation at a rally held on August 3 at Central Shaheed Minar.

In response to the ongoing unrest, which stems from demands for quota reforms in civil service, Hasina had previously invited the protesting students to a dialogue at Gono Bhaban, seeking to mitigate the violence. However, her invitation did little to quell the unrest, which has seen violent clashes, including attacks on state institutions and law enforcement.

The protests intensified following the announcement of a “March to Dhaka” by the Anti-Discrimination Students’ Movement. This demonstration, initially scheduled for Tuesday, was rescheduled to today, further exacerbating the situation. In response to the escalating crisis, the Bangladeshi government has announced a three-day shutdown of public and private offices, including banks, as a precautionary measure.

The recent wave of violence has claimed at least 93 lives and left thousands injured, with many sustaining gunshot wounds. The unrest has been attributed to discontent over a new policy favoring descendants of freedom fighters for government jobs, which has fueled further demonstrations and violence.

As the situation remains volatile, the political landscape in Bangladesh is under significant strain, with the future of Hasina’s government and the nation’s stability hanging in the balance.

</excerpt>

Indian security agencies are closely monitoring a Bangladesh Air Force C-130 aircraft with the call sign AJAX1431 as it moves towards Delhi. The plane, believed to be carrying Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her entourage, entered Indian airspace from Bangladesh around 10 kilometers from the border.

Sources indicate the aircraft is expected to land in Delhi between 5:00 PM and 5:15 PM. It has already crossed Patna and is approaching the Uttar Pradesh-Bihar border. Top security officials are closely monitoring the situation, with all radars activated to track the plane.

Bangladesh Army Takes Control, Calls for Peace

Meanwhile, a significant development has unfolded in Bangladesh. The country’s Chief of Army Staff, General Waqar-uz-Zaman, announced on Monday that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned, and an interim government will be formed.

The Army Chief emphasized that a political transition is underway and all those involved in murders will be brought to justice. He appealed for peace and order, urging the public to trust the army and refrain from violence.

“Maintain peace and order in the country. You trust me, let’s work together. Please help. I won’t get anything by fighting. Avoid conflict. We have built a beautiful country together,” the Army Chief said.

The Army Chief disclosed having met with representatives from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Jatiya Party, and Jamaat-e-Islami, as well as with teachers Afis Nazrul and Jonayet Saki.

Economic Factors Fuel Unrest

While the student-led protests initially appeared to be driven by quota issues, the Army Chief highlighted underlying economic challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine conflict have severely impacted Bangladesh’s economy, leading to soaring inflation and a balance of payments crisis. This economic distress has fueled public discontent and created a volatile environment.

The Chief of Army Staff pointed out that opposition groups, including the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami, have exploited the situation to incite violence. He also warned of potential foreign interference in Bangladesh’s internal affairs.

“You cannot rule out the involvement of foreign powers who are inimical to Bangladesh’s interest and to our security also. You cannot rule out the fact that certain interests have been fishing in troubled waters,” he stated.

The Army Chief concluded that the complex situation in Bangladesh is a result of multiple factors, including economic hardships and opportunistic political maneuvering.

A senior official from the Bangladesh Prime Minister’s Office, who requested anonymity, speaks to ANI -“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left the official residence in Dhaka after violence erupted. Her current whereabouts are unknown. The situation in Dhaka is highly sensitive, and the Prime Minister’s residence is under siege by a mob.”

Anti-Discrimination Student Movement’s “March to Dhaka”

The anti-discrimination student movement in Bangladesh has announced a major demonstration, dubbed the “March to Dhaka,” scheduled for today. The movement’s primary demand is the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her cabinet. According to The Daily Star, the movement’s coordinators—Asif Mahmud, Sarjis Alam, and Abu Baker Majumder—have confirmed their participation and urged citizens nationwide to join the march.

Initially planned for Tuesday, the march was rescheduled for Monday due to the escalating violence and rising death toll. On August 3, the movement announced its single-point demand for the government’s resignation at a rally held at the Central Shaheed Minar. Key organiser Nahid Islam emphasized this demand during the rally.

Government’s Response and Assurance

In response to the growing unrest, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina extended an olive branch, inviting the protesting students to discuss their grievances at Gono Bhaban. She reiterated her willingness to hold talks and assured that the trials for those killed during the protests would be conducted. Additionally, she announced the cancellation of the proposed universal pension scheme “Prottoy” for universities and state-owned organizations.

Nationwide Shutdown and Curfew

As the crisis deepens, the Bangladeshi government has announced a three-day shutdown of public and private offices, including banks. The authorities have also imposed a nationwide curfew and blocked 4G mobile internet in an attempt to curb the violence. Despite these measures, students have persisted with their scheduled long march, setting the stage for a potential clash with pro-government groups.

Violence and Casualties

The first day of the student-led non-cooperation campaign on Sunday saw clashes between anti-government protesters and the police in at least 20 districts. This fresh wave of violence has resulted in the deaths of 93 people, with thousands more injured, many from gunshot wounds. Over the past three weeks, the anti-government rallies have claimed 300 lives, marking the bloodiest phase in Bangladesh’s civil movement history.

Members of the ruling Awami League have taken to the streets to counter the demonstrations, further escalating the violence. In Sirajganj, an enraged mob attacked a police station, killing 13 officers. Separate clashes in Raiganj upazila of Sirajganj resulted in five additional deaths, making it the district with the highest death toll. The capital, Dhaka, witnessed the deaths of 12 people amid the chaos.

The violence has seen extensive property damage, with at least 70 establishments, including homes of ruling party lawmakers, Awami League offices, police stations, and public vehicles, set on fire or vandalized. Fire service data indicates significant destruction across the nation.

International Advisory and Non-Cooperation Campaign

In light of the escalating violence, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has advised its nationals to refrain from traveling to Bangladesh until further notice. Indian citizens in Bangladesh have been urged to exercise extreme caution and stay in contact with the Indian High Commission in Dhaka.

The protests, initially sparked by demands for quota system reforms, have intensified following the introduction of a policy allocating government jobs to descendants of freedom fighters. This has led to widespread discontent and violent incidents, including attacks on state television headquarters and police booths in Dhaka.

</excerpt>

On Thursday, the Ministry of External Affairs has recently claimed that India had gotten a ‘diplomatic note’ from Dhaka.

It has ‘protested’ recent ‘shelter’ comments made by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Bannerjee.

Issuing a weekly press briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said ‘I can confirm that we have received a diplomatic note, a communication from the Bangladesh side protesting the comments made by the West Bengal CM. It is essentially on the lines described in the reports.’

Furthermore, citing the 7th schedule of the constitution, the spokesperson of MEA Randhir Jaiswal emphasized that foreign or international matters are the ‘sole prerogative’ of central government.

Elaborating his point, he said ‘I would underline that under the 7th Schedule, List 1 – Union List, Item 10, of our Constitution, the conduct of foreign affairs and all matters which bring the Union into relation with any foreign country are the sole prerogative of the Union government.’

Mamata Bannerjee Comments

For those unversed, just last week, West Bengal CM Mamata Bannerjee recently made a statement saying that her government will give ‘shelter’ to ‘helpless individuals’ from neighbouring Bangladesh who demand refuge. This statement came around the time, when protests against quota is currently taking place.

Later, while attending martyr’s day in Kolkata she said ‘Don’t worry if any of your family members or relatives are in Bangladesh for work or study. We’re ready to help them return back.’

Moreover, she also added that she can’t say much as Bangladesh is a different country and whatever will be said, it will be said by the Indian government.

But notably the TMC head also emphasized that if ‘helpless individuals’ come towards Bengal, they’ll provide shelter because United Nations mandated resolution allows neighbouring countries to help those in trouble.

Afterward she said ‘I urge everyone not to comment on Bangladesh (issue), to avoid falling into provocations. We feel compassion and sympathy for those whose blood is shed’.

Protests In Bangladesh

Meanwhile, Bangladesh is currently witnessing huge protests for the reformation of quota systems. In this system, seats in civil government jobs are reserved for a particular group. This group also includes descendants of 1971 war veterans.

Due to the ongoing protests, it has resulted in the fatalities of around 100 people. But currently, Bangladesh’s supreme court has taken matters into their hands. It has reduced the quota for war veterans from 30 percent to 5 percent.

In addition, it has left allocation of seats to the merit and the rest 2% will be reserved for minority communities, disabled and transgender people. Reports Al-Jazeera.

</excerpt>

Following intense clashes between police and demonstrators in cities across Bangladesh, including Dhaka, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced that 778 Indian students have been safely repatriated via land ports, bringing the total number of returnees to 998.

The MEA highlighted that the High Commission of India in Dhaka, along with the Assistant High Commissions in Chittagong, Rajshahi, Sylhet, and Khulna, have been instrumental in facilitating these repatriation efforts amidst the ongoing unrest.

“The High Commission of India in Dhaka and our Assistant High Commissions are in regular touch with more than 4,000 students remaining in various universities in Bangladesh and are providing necessary assistance,” the MEA stated.

In response to the escalating violence, security arrangements have been put in place to ensure the safe transit of students. The High Commission is working with Bangladeshi civil aviation authorities and airlines to ensure flight services continue without disruption.

The violence erupted following student-led protests against a controversial government job quota system. The protests, which have been fueled by frustration over high unemployment and a reinstated quota system, have resulted in at least 115 deaths this week, according to reports by AFP.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government has responded by deploying the military and imposing a nationwide curfew. Although the curfew was briefly lifted on Saturday, it will remain in effect until 10 a.m. on Sunday, pending a reassessment by the authorities.

“The rising death toll is a shocking indictment of the absolute intolerance shown by the Bangladeshi authorities to protest and dissent,” stated Babu Ram Pant of Amnesty International.

To control the situation, the government has imposed a nationwide curfew and deployed the military. The announcement was made by Obaidul Quader, a top official from the ruling Awami League party.

The protests became more violent when demonstrators set fire to the state broadcaster’s building. This led to the shutdown of metro and train services in Dhaka and the closure of schools and universities.

Hackers attacked several government websites, posting messages against the government’s actions. The government, however, defends the quota system, saying war veterans deserve respect.
