The suicide of 34-year-old techie Atul Subhash in Bangalore has shocked and angered the nation. It is disturbing that someone would feel so tormented and hopeless, allegedly due to domestic violence by his ex-spouse. Without prematurely assigning blame, let us examine this tragedy through psychological, historical, legal, and philosophical perspectives to understand what happened and how such incidents can be prevented.

From a psychological perspective, what stands out about this suicide is the meticulous planning. Suicide is often a spontaneous act driven by overwhelming despair and defeat. However, in this case, Atul’s act involved considerable contemplation and preparation, as seen in his 24-page suicide note, an hour-long video, and detailed checklists. He seemed to view his suicide not merely as an escape but as a way to free his family from their suffering and to highlight what he saw as the failings of the legal system.

Atul ascribed a higher purpose to his action, seeing it as a sacrifice for a larger cause. This reflects not just hopelessness but a calculated intent to make his tragedy a form of protest. Philosophical traditions describe actions in terms of three modes: sattvic (goodness), rajasic (passion), and tamasic (ignorance). While suicide is often categorized as tamasic because of its destructive nature, Atul’s act was a mixture of modes, combining elements of calculated purpose and despair.
The philosophical context helps clarify the nature of such actions. Even seemingly noble activities like austerities can turn tamasic if they are destructive. Conversely, under certain conditions, actions like fasting to death might be seen as meaningful. Atul’s calm deliberation before the act suggests that his decision was not a rash reaction but a deliberate attempt to spotlight his perceived grievances with the system.

Historical perspective
From a historical perspective, modern narratives often portray history as a chronicle of patriarchy, where men systematically exploited women. Feminist movements are seen as addressing these historical wrongs. While there is truth in the need to redress past injustices, this view oversimplifies history.
In pre-modern times, survival required intense collaboration between men and women. Life was too harsh for systematic exploitation based on gender. Exploitation often occurred along power lines, with the privileged exploiting the underprivileged, irrespective of gender. For instance, male laborers in farming, mining, and factories often endured grueling conditions under the hands of powerful elites.

Both men and women lacked autonomy in rigidly structured societies. Arranged marriages left men with little say in choosing their partners, just as women were often confined to domestic roles. It was only after the Industrial Revolution that men began to gain significant autonomy, followed by similar freedoms for women in subsequent centuries.
Reducing history to a simplistic gender conflict ignores these complexities. The Bhagavad-Gita describes this as knowledge in the mode of ignorance, where one aspect is misrepresented as the whole. Such reductionism distorts the past and influences the present in harmful ways, particularly in the realm of legal frameworks.

Legal perspective
The legal dimension further highlights these issues. Historically, patriarchal norms often left women without recourse against domestic violence. Addressing these injustices is crucial, but it is equally important to avoid creating new imbalances. In some modern legal systems, this balance has tipped too far, neglecting the rights and struggles of male victims.

In India, for instance, domestic violence laws focus solely on violence against women, leaving male victims without legal remedies. While men are generally perceived as stronger, this does not mean they cannot suffer abuse. The Bhagavad-Gita’s 16th chapter emphasizes that divine and demonic qualities exist in everyone. Power, when concentrated, invites abuse regardless of gender.

The societal presumption that men are inherently tough further complicates their ability to report abuse. Men are often stigmatized for admitting victimhood, which compounds their struggles. As patriarchal norms loosen, statistics reveal alarming trends. In the U.S., nearly 44% of men report being victims of intimate partner violence. In Finland, male victims accounted for 31% of domestic violence cases from 2010 to 2022.
These figures underscore the need for balanced legal frameworks. Addressing female-to-male violence does not diminish protections for women; it broadens the scope of justice. Both male-to-female and female-to-male violence are significant issues that require acknowledgment and action. This is not a gendered battle but a human struggle against lower instincts.

Justice must transcend gender conflicts and ideological divides. Legal systems need not only robust laws but also a culture of fairness. Laws can be manipulated when enacted without consideration for balance. Exploitation of such laws by opportunistic individuals perpetuates unfairness and undermines justice.

Philosophical perspective
From a philosophical perspective, the Bhagavad-Gita emphasizes that true wisdom lies in cultivating virtues, not merely accumulating knowledge. Wisdom in law involves fostering an ethos of justice that transcends political and ideological divides. By focusing on cultivating the virtue of fairness for all, not just debating over the technicalities of specific laws and agonizing over which laws favour whom, society can address issues like domestic violence more comprehensively.
The Bhagavad-Gita’s virtue-based approach offers a holistic vision for life and law. Cultivating virtues in individuals and systems is essential to countering the tragedies stemming from domestic violence, whether the victims are male or female. This ethos can guide society toward genuine justice, fostering harmony and fairness.

Chaitanya Charan has been a monk for nearly three decades. He gives around 400 talks across 100 cities in four continents every year and has written some thirty books on science and spirituality, life lessons from Indian epics and social commentary.

The Punjabi pop icon had the city energized with his performance, but it was the spontaneous singalong on the Bengaluru Metro that stole the show.

Metro Singalong to Remember

To cater for the throng, the Bengaluru Metro extended hours till midnight so that citywide fans could travel through after the concert. What has been witnessed is a moment like magic that has been captured: fans swaying and singing to Dosanjh’s Ikk Kudi, aboard the metro. Thus, this impromptu singalong brought the concerts into the heart of this city and united fans together in celebrating.

Starting August 3, heavy goods vehicles will be banned from city roads in Bangalore during peak hours on Saturdays to reduce traffic congestion. This new regulation aims to ease the flow of traffic and enhance the overall commuting experience for residents and visitors.

The decision comes after numerous complaints about the severe traffic jams that plague the city, particularly on weekends when the number of vehicles on the road increases significantly. The Bangalore government expects that this measure will not only improve traffic conditions but also reduce pollution levels and contribute to a cleaner, more pleasant urban environment.

Heavy goods vehicles will need to plan their schedules accordingly, ensuring that deliveries and other activities involving large vehicles are completed outside the restricted hours. Authorities will monitor the situation and may adjust the regulations as needed to optimize traffic flow and address any unforeseen challenges.

The ban will specifically target peak traffic hours, which have been identified as 8 AM to 10 AM and 4 PM to 6 PM. During these times, the presence of HGVs on city roads significantly contributes to traffic jams, delays, and increased risks of accidents. By restricting their movement during these critical periods, city planners aim to create a smoother traffic flow and a safer environment for all road users.

To ensure compliance with the new regulation, city authorities will deploy additional traffic enforcement personnel during the specified peak hours. Signage will be installed at key entry points to the city, informing drivers of the restrictions. Violators may face fines and other penalties to encourage adherence to the new rules.

As the regulation comes into effect on August 3, city planners and residents alike will be watching closely to gauge its impact. If successful, this initiative could serve as a model for other cities facing similar challenges, demonstrating that thoughtful regulation and strategic planning can lead to meaningful improvements in urban living.

Thus, solidifying India’s growing reputation as a provider of quality but affordable healthcare.

The 38-year-old Yemini patient earlier visited Apollo Hospitals, Bangalore, at Bannerghatta Road. He for a very long time, was suffering from Mitral Valve Disease.

Looking at his deteriorating condition, he was later treated to Robotic Mitral Valve Replacement (MVR) with mechanical valve. Which got completed within mere 29 minutes.

This procedure gave great results to the doctors, as this advanced technological surgery managed to address the challenges associated with severe heart conditions.

Speaking about this surgery, Apollo doctor Dr Sathyaki Nambala said, ‘At Apollo Hospitals, our dedicated team of cardiologists, nurses, and technicians work together to provide comprehensive care that addresses the full spectrum of heart diseases. </excerpt>

A recent post by a user on X claiming to pay ₹64,000 in rent for an apartment in Noida has caused a stir on the platform. Identified only by the first name Raj, the user shared a picture of the view from his balcony, describing it as “dreamy” and prompting reactions from fellow X users.

Living in a 3BHK with three flatmates, Raj clarified to Hindustan Times that his rent does not include maintenance charges, which are paid separately.

While Noida is typically known for its relatively lower rental rates compared to Delhi, Raj’s claim sparked disbelief among users. Many cited average rental prices for similar properties in Noida, ranging between Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 35,000, leading some to question the authenticity of his post.

Responding to skepticism, Raj maintained the truthfulness of his statement, acknowledging that although the facilities in his society are better compared to others, he feels they may be paying more than warranted.

“64K for this view? Insane. I can see the hills for almost 14K per month in Maharashtra,” wrote one person.

Despite the controversy, Raj defended his choice, citing difficulties in finding suitable accommodations in Delhi due to landlords’ reluctance to rent to bachelors.

</excerpt>

The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) received recognition from the United Nations Climate Change Innovation Workshop for its effective adoption of sustainable water practices and efficient management techniques. Dr. V Ram Prasath Manohar, the Chairman of BWSSB, participated in the UN Climate Change 5th Systemic Innovation Workshop, where he outlined the board’s strategies for addressing water shortages and managing water supply challenges in Bangalore.

With Bangalore spanning approximately 800 square kilometers and hosting around 14 million residents, BWSSB faces the crucial task of supplying potable water and managing sewage systems. Around 60 percent of the city’s water supply relies on the Cauvery River, while the remaining 40 percent is sourced from groundwater. However, the failure of monsoons has led to a significant depletion of groundwater, resulting in more than 50 percent of bore wells failing. Consequently, there has been a sudden and substantial increase in dependency on Cauvery water.

Despite these challenges, BWSSB effectively managed the crisis through the adoption of innovative technologies and sustainable practices. Measures such as the enforcement of judicious water usage, installation of aerators to curb water wastage, and the utilization of modern technology for bore well management have been instrumental in addressing the water crisis.

Dr. Manohar expressed pride in the board’s ability to effectively meet the challenge and emphasized the need for ongoing preparation to tackle future challenges. He encouraged innovators to study Bangalore’s water management as a model and develop further sustainable innovations.

During the workshop, officers from various regions of the country showcased innovative initiatives undertaken in their respective cities. In the interactive session, participants commended Dr. Manohar and BWSSB for their efforts in mitigating the water shortage crisis.

The recognition from the UN Climate Change Innovation Workshop underscores BWSSB’s commitment to sustainability and its proactive approach to addressing water management challenges in Bangalore.

Arun placed QR code stickers in Metro station washrooms across the city, resulting in his apprehension by Metro housekeeping staff at Deepanjali Nagar station on April 23.

According to Chandrashekharaiah, the assistant security officer at the station, Arun was caught placing stickers in the washroom around 2:45 PM. Arun’s defense was that the QR code linked to advertisements for his chocolate products. However, Metro authorities stressed the need for prior authorization for any advertising within their premises.

As a consequence, Arun faces legal action under various acts, including the Prevention of Destruction and Loss of Property Act, the Karnataka Open Places (Prevention of Disfigurement) Act, and IPC section 427 for mischief causing damage. He was arrested and released on station bail, with further questioning pending post-elections.

</excerpt>

Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka and India’s IT capital, is facing severe water shortage for the last several days. Residents in many areas of the metro city are unable to lead a mormal life as their taps have run dry and they are forced to either go to their friends or relatives’ place for their daily needs or head to the nearest malls for the same. According to authorities from the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), the city’s “water input” has decreased by 50% with Karnataka deputy CM DK Shivakumar admitting that 6,997 out of 16,781 borewells in the city are dry.

The low monsoons in September 2023 resulted in drought in 195 taluks, which is what caused the current water issue. Subsequently, the count increased to 216 out of 236 taluks, which included districts of Mysuru and Mandya, which supply water to Bengaluru. The worst-affected areas are those under the Mahadevapura zone, which include Bellandur, Kadugodi, Byrathi, Hoodi, Whitefield, Varthur, Marathahalli, and AECS Layout.

Doddabidarakallu, Lingadheeranahalli under the RR Nagara zone, Konanakunte, Vasanthapura under the Bommanahalli zone, Thanisandra, Amruthhalli under the Yelahanka zone, and Chikkasandra, Mallasandra are among the other locations experiencing supply problems.

With no end in sight to the crisis, the BWSSB has come out with strict guideline and even banned the use of drinking water for any purpose, including car wash, gardening, building, road construction, cleaning public areas, and water fountains. Bengaluru’s movie theaters and shopping centers have been urged to make sure that drinking water is exclusively used for that reason.

The severe problem has forced the government to look into recycled water and allow cleaned water to be sold by flats. The city needs more than 2,600 million liters of water per day (mld), of which only 1,460 mld come from the Cauvery River and roughly 1,392 mld come from borewells. Outside the BBMP zones, there is an increasing need for water. Apartment complex quality sewage water treatment (STP) plants will be upgraded by the state.

</excerpt>

Bengaluru; In a significant breakthrough, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has uncovered compelling evidence linking the Bellary module of ISIS to the Rameswaram cafe blast case in Kundalahalli, Bengaluru. Sources suggest that the prime suspect may be hiding either in Bellary or Pune, prompting extensive searches in these locations by NIA officials.

On December 14, 2023, NIA conducted raids across various places, including Bellary in Karnataka, leading to the arrest of eight individuals who are currently held in different jails across the country. Subsequently, body warrants were obtained for four suspects, and they were interrogated, yielding crucial information about the ISIS Bellary module’s involvement in the attack.

CCTV footage recorded the suspected terrorist boarding a bus to Pune at the Bellary bus stand on the day of the Rameswaram cafe explosion. Investigations are underway to trace his journey from Bellary. Meanwhile, suspicion surrounds Meenaz alias Sulaiman, a detainee from the Bellary on December 14, 2023. NIA officials intensified their interrogation of Sulaiman after obtaining a body warrant, leading to the detention of three suspected terrorists in Bangalore, Mumbai, and Delhi. Meenaz alias Sulaiman, who was the head of the ISIS Bellary module, Syed Samir of Bellary in Bangalore jail, Anas Iqbal Shaikh in Mumbai jail and Shan Rehman alias Hussain in Delhi jail have been interrogated by the NIA officials.

Meenaz alias Sulaiman, identified as the head of the ISIS Bellary module, played a pivotal role in recruiting and radicalizing poor Muslim youth. Formerly associated with the PFI organization, Meenaz shifted allegiance to ISIS after the ban on PFI in India. The ISIS Bellary module president targeted vulnerable youth, particularly those associated with the PFI, brainwashing them in the name of freedom.

The investigation has unveiled Meenaz’s influence in forming a terrorist organization and his alleged involvement in the escape of one or two individuals who attacked Bellary on December 14, 2023. It is suspected that these escapees may have carried out the Rameswaram Cafe blast under Meenaz’s instructions while he was in jail.

Meenaz alias Sulaiman’s family background reveals his father running a clothing shop in Bellary, with both parents actively engaged in the business. His brother, previously working in Goa, returned after an accident, assisting their father in the shop. Sulaiman’s sister is reportedly pursuing MBBS in Tumkur.

The NIA’s continued efforts aim to dismantle the ISIS Bellary module and bring those responsible for the Rameswaram cafe blast to justice. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to apprehend the prime suspect and ensure the safety of the public.

DK Shivakumar stated, “Karnataka is not just looking for employees, workers, it is looking for job creators,” during his speech at the Bengaluru tech conference. Without a doubt, this will lead to more jobs being created in our state, making it the employer’s home.
“Karnataka currently has a strong and stable government. Karnataka is a window into India. Karnataka has a highly skilled labour force. We will restore the lost dignity with your help.

That responsibility is ours. Our government will give more importance to the establishment of industries other than Bengaluru. We have also mentioned this issue in our manifesto. The onus is on all of us to create more jobs, you must give more power to the government”, Shivakumar said.
He added that the Karnataka government had fulfilled most of its promises since it came to power, earlier this year.
“In 100 days, we have fulfilled our most important promises. In the next 100 days, we have made a plan as to which projects should be implemented. In 100 days many businessmen will be met and discussed about investing in Karnataka. Our desire is that our state should be at the forefront in all fields”, the Karnataka DCM said.

He continued, in response to a question about the city’s traffic, “Bengaluru is a very safe, healthy city, united in diversity. Our citizens have provided more than 80,000 proposals to raise the dignity of the “brand Bangalore,” which is home to 34% of the state’s population. Bengaluru is currently having trouble with traffic congestion. Time is incredibly valuable. We shall propose the proposal in this regard in the next days. Because we have the ability to speak for immediate assistance, we shouldn’t only pledge that “what is said will happen.”
