Air India Flight to Bali Returns to Delhi Mid-Air After Volcanic Eruption Alert

An Air India plane for Indonesia’s Bali was forced to turn back to Delhi on Wednesday after a volcanic explosion in the area.

The airline reports that flight AI2145 from Delhi to Bali was asked to return because of safety issues related to the volcanic eruption along the way to the destination. “Air India flight AI2145 on 18 June 2025 from Delhi to Bali was advised to air return to Delhi due to volcanic eruption reported near destination airport Bali, in the interest of safety,” Air India said in a statement.

The plane landed safely at Indira Gandhi International Airport, and the passengers were evacuated in safety. The airline expressed regret for the inconvenience but ensured that passengers were accommodated without delay.

“Disruption to passengers is genuinely regretted and utmost efforts have been made to reduce it by making available hotel accommodation to the affected passengers. Refund in full on cancellation or free rescheduling has also been provided to them if availed,” the official stated.

The disruption follows several flight cancellations in the region over the last several days because of rising volcanic activity. Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki on the island of Flores erupted on Tuesday, spewing an ash plume 10 kilometres high, the AFP reported.

Consequently, a number of airlines such as Air India, Air New Zealand, Singapore-based Tigerair, and China’s Juneyao Airlines cancelled flights to Bali. Jetstar and Virgin Australia also suspended services from/to numerous Australian cities, according to Bali airport’s official website.

This event comes after a previous report by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, which recorded that between June 12 and 17, Air India had cancelled 83 wide-body aircraft operations, comprising 66 Boeing 787 flights.

The victims, identified as F. Justine Christine from France and Kim Hyoeun from South Korea, were both female. They were among a group of tourists visiting the Sacred Monkey Forest, a popular destination in Ubud, Bali. The park is known for its population of over 1,260 long-tailed macaques, who roam freely among visitors. Unfortunately, this popular attraction turned deadly as a tree came crashing down without warning, striking the tourists. While the two women were tragically killed, a few other individuals sustained minor injuries during the incident.

Local police confirmed the accident occurred at 12:15 PM, coinciding with a sudden heavy rainstorm and strong winds across Ubud and the Sacred Monkey Forest. The stormy weather conditions were suspected to have contributed to the tragic accident. Kombes Pol Jansen Avitus Panjaitan, Head of Public Relations for Bali Regional Police, spoke to the media, stating that many tourists attempted to flee the area after the tree fell. However, some were unable to escape in time, resulting in the unfortunate deaths and injuries.

Following the incident, the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, which manages the site, released a statement expressing their deepest condolences to the victims and their families. Bali to ban activities in mountains to curb tourist misconduct in sacred peaks

To preserve the mountains’ holiness, Bali’s governor, Wayan Koster, has put an emergency ban on tourism activity there. This choice was made in response to an increase in visitor misbehaviour, which has led to worries about Bali’s cherished natural areas being harmed. Governor Koster emphasised the significance of maintaining the sacredness of these mountains and stated that to do so would be to diminish Bali’s holiness.

Bali’s tourism chief, Tjokorda Bagus Pemayun, supported the ban and assured that local mountain guides would be offered opportunities as contract workers to ensure their livelihoods. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock began her two-day visit to India on Monday and was welcomed by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

Earlier on Monday German foreign minister landed in Delhi and will be discussing cooperation on the transition to renewable energy and India’s relationship with Russia and China.

Taking to Twitter Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi tweeted, “A warm welcome to German Foreign Minister @ABaerbock as she arrives in New Delhi on her first official visit. An opportunity to exchange views on regional and global developments and review the progress achieved in the India-Germany Strategic Partnership.”

Meanwhile, cooperation in the energy transition away from oil, coal, and gas will also play a role in the two-day inaugural visit.

In the rural surroundings of New Delhi Baerbock will visit projects for renewable energies and sustainability on Friday, said German Federal Foreign Office.

However, India’s relationship with China will also be focused on during Baerbock’s talks with her counterpart Jaishankar.

Today’s era must not be of war,” the G20 communique said.

India played an “essential role” in negotiating the G20 summit leaders’ declaration in Bali, and Washington fully supports India’s presidency of the grouping over the next year, the United States said.

White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre responded to a question on President Joe Biden’s meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi by mentioning Biden’s trilateral meeting with Modi and the president of Indonesia, Joko Widodo.

She then said,“India played an essential role in negotiating the summit’s declaration. Prime Minister Modi made clear ‘today’s era must not be of war’ and that’s a direct quote from the Prime Minister.”

The direct message that Prime Minister Modi sent to Russian President Vladimir Putin in September in Samarkand became the point of agreement at the G20 summit in Bali against the backdrop of Russia’s conflict in Ukraine and the ensuing geopolitical tension.

The declaration read, “The peaceful resolution of conflicts, efforts to address crises, as well as diplomacy and dialogue, are vital. Today’s era must not be of war.”

The White House press secretary added that the summit had provided a path forward to food and energy security — concerns that India has consistently flagged since the onset of the war.

“As I speak to you in Bali and we sing songs of Indonesian traditions, 1500 km away from here in India’s Cuttack, Bali Yatra Mahotsav is going on – Bali Jatra. This Mahotsav celebrates thousands of years old India-Indonesia trade relations,” Modi said.

PM Modi further added, “When people of Indonesia see photos of this year’s Bali Jatra on the internet. They will be proud and happy. Due to the issues arising due to Covid-19, some hurdles had cropped up. After several years, Bali Jatra Mahotsav is being celebrated on a grand scale with mass participation in Odisha.”

Moreover, the relationship between India and Indonesia is strong. During the 2018 earthquake, India started the Samudra Maitri operation in Indonesia.

“That year when I came to Jakarta, I had said that India and Indonesia may be 90 nautical miles apart, but in reality, we are not 90 nautical miles apart but 90 nautical miles close,” Modi said.

Two day G20 Summit begins in Bali

World leader from across the globe Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US President Joe Biden, and Chinese President Xi Jinping, have converged in Indonesia, for the 17th Group of 20 (G20) Summit, taking place in the city of Bali.

“PM @narendramodi and @POTUS @JoeBideninteract during the @g20org Summit in Bali. G20 working session on Food and Energy Security,” Prime Minister’s Office tweeted.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for global joint efforts to address global challenges such as climate change. Terming climate change a “defining challenge” of the age, he said that a “climate solidarity pact” is conducive to achieving the goals outlined in the Paris Agreement.

“The G20 leaders can make or break the climate solidarity pact. On the sidelines of the G20 Summit, I will meet with Leaders of several other participating countries, and review the progress in India’s bilateral relations with them.”

Prime Minister Modi will be holding bilateral talks with the world leaders at the Summit and will brief them about India’s evolving priorities. During the summit, India will officially assume the presidency of G20. G20 is the premier forum for international economic cooperation, and it plays a crucial role in shaping and strengthening global architecture and governance on all major international economic and developmental issues. The leaders will emphasize on vital issues impacting globally.

The two-day Bali Summit comprises three working sessions at the leaders’ level, in which PM Modi will be participating. These include sessions on food and energy security, a session on digital transformation, and a session on health.

“These include uneven post-pandemic economic recovery, debt vulnerabilities especially in the countries of the global south, ongoing conflict in Europe, and its knock-on effect, such as food security challenges, energy crisis and inflation on all countries of the world,” Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said.

Meanwhile, on Monday at the G20 meeting in Bali, Indonesia US President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping have begun bilateral talks.

Both the President gave brief opening remarks to the press in which President Xi said, “Today, we finally have this face-to-face meeting. Currently, the China-US relationship is in such a situation that we all care a lot about it. We need to find the right direction for the bilateral relationship going forward and elevate the relationship.”

Moreover, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen, and Ambassador of the United States to the People’s Republic of China Nicholas Burns were accompanied by US President Biden.

On the China side, Xi was accompanied by a team including the Director of the Chinese Communist Party General Office Ding Xuexiang, and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

During the meeting both the President’s sat at the table without wearing a mask while other officials in the room were wearing the mask.

In an opening remark, Biden said, “I am committed to keeping lines of communication open between you and me personally, but our governments across the board because our two countries have so much that we have the opportunity to deal with.”

“As the leaders of our two nations were to share responsibility in my view to show that China and the US can manage our differences, prevent competition from becoming anything even near conflict and find ways to work together on urgent, global issues that require our mutual cooperation,” Biden further stated.

After Biden China President made his remarks and said, “Currently the China-US relationship is in such a situation that we all care a lot about it because this is not the fundamental interest of our two countries and peoples, and it is not what the international community expects (from) us.”

“As leaders of the two major countries, we need to chart the right course for the US-China relationship. We need to find the right direction for the bilateral relationship going forward and elevate the relationship,” Xi said.

The Chinese leader further added, “The world expects that China and the United States will properly handle the relationship. Our meeting has attracted the world’s attention, so we need to work with all countries to bring more hope to world peace, greater confidence to global stability, and a strong impetus to common development.”

PM Modi to attend G20 Summit in Indonesia

At the invitation of President Joko Widodo, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the G20 Summit from 14 November to 16 November in Indonesia.

Earlier on Thursday, the ministry of external affairs announced and said bilateral meets will also be held by PM Modi.

Meanwhile, on 1 December, formally, India will assume the G20 presidency.

According to the MEA statement, “At the closing session of the Summit, Indonesian President Widodo will symbolically hand over the G-20 Presidency to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.”

“During the Summit, the G-20 leaders will deliberate extensively upon key issues of global concern under the Summit theme of Recover Together, Recover Stronger,” the MEA statement added.

Moreover, the world leaders who will attend the meeting are US President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, among others.

The Group of 20 or G20 is a forum which consists of developing and developed countries like Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the UK, the US, and the European Union (EU).

However, in Bali, PM Modi will interact and address the Indian community.

Furthermore, on Tuesday, India’s logo, theme and website were unveiled by PM Modi for the presidency of the G20.

Talking about the logo and theme, the logo is made with the four colors of India’s national flag and the theme of G20 India 2023 – Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam: One Earth, One Family, One Future.
