According to District Government Advocate Gulab Chandra Agrahari, Atiq obtained 2.377 hectares of land using cash from illegal operations and registered it in the name of a mason, Hoobalal. Atiq had also stated that he would transfer the land under his own name if necessary. In November 2023, the police seized this land.

Agrahari noted that the Police Commissioner Court seized the property under Section 14(1) of the Gangsters Act, allowing three months for a response, but no proof of ownership was provided. The Police Commissioner Court subsequently forwarded the case to the Gangster Court in Prayagraj. On Tuesday, Judge Vinod Kumar Chaurasia deemed the police commissioner’s actions “fair and just,” leading to the official transfer of the property to the state government.

</excerpt>

After gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed was killed in Prayagraj, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said that Atiq was the second former MP from the Muslim community to be “murdered without impunity”.

“Atiq is the second Muslim ex-MP who was murdered with impunity. Ehsan Jaffry was ruthlessly hacked to death by a mob in Gujarat in 2002 and today it’s Atiq. Shot and killed in police custody,” tweeted Owaisi. Atiq Ahmed represented the Phulpur Lok Sabha constituency between 2004-2009.Ehsan Jaffry was a member of the 6th Lok Sabha. He was killed by a mob in the Gulbarg Society massacre on February 28, 2002, following the Godhra incident.After Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf Ahmed were shot dead in Prayagraj, AIMIM chief Owaisi called the incident a “cold-blooded murder” while adding that people who are celebrating this killing are “vultures”.

OWAISI CLAIMED ATIQ’S KILLING ‘PLANNED ATTACK’
Addressing the mediapersons on Sunday, Owaisi said, “Uttar Pradesh’s BJP government has a role in this. Supreme Court-monitored investigation should be done and a committee should be formed. No officer from Uttar Pradesh should be included in the committee. This was a ‘cold-blooded’ murder.”He further said, “How did they (killers) get those weapons?… Why were they raising religious slogans after killing them? What will you call them if not terrorists? Will you call them Patriots? People celebrating this incident are vultures…”

He said the incident raises a big question about the law and order situation.
The AIMIM chief questioned whether the public will have any faith in the constitution and Law and order of the country after this incident.

OWAISI DEMANDED YOGI’S RESIGNATION
“I have always been saying that BJP in Uttar Pradesh is not running the government by the rule of law but by the rule of gun,” he said.Owaisi further demanded Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s resignation.

“I demand the resignation of UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and the Supreme Court to form a team and investigate this matter. We also demand all police officers present there should be removed from service,” he said.

QUESTIONS RAISED ON YOGI’S LAW & ORDER

“Atiq and his brother were in police custody. He was handcuffed. JSR (Jai Shri Ram) slogans were also raised. The killing of both is the failure of Yogi’s law and order system. Those celebrating encounter raj are also responsible for this murder,” Owaisi added.Days after Atiq Ahmed’s son Asad was killed in an encounter in Uttar Pradesh’s Jhansi, the gangster-turned-politician and his brother, Ashraf Ahmed, were killed on Saturday while being taken for a medical examination in Prayagraj.Both the gangsters collapsed on the spot after they were shot at nearly point-blank range.

Such incidents can happen with anyone if there is no rule of law,” Rajasthan CM Gehlot said on the killings of Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf Ahmed on Saturday. “To kill a person in full public glare is very easy but maintaining law and order in the state is difficult,” he added.

For those unversed, Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were killed by 3 assailants who later got arrested on Sunday. The trio confessed to their crime, saying they did it to “become popular.” As per several reports these assailants killed Atiq by using Zigana pistol. Here everything you need to know about the semi-automatic pistol.

Zigana manufactured in 2001

The Zigana is a semi-automatic pistol manufactured by the Turkish firearms manufacturer TSA. The pistol was first manufactured in 2001 and is one of Turkey’s first pistols with an original design.

The operating mechanism of Zigana pistols is a locked-slide short recoil mechanism with a modified Browning-type locking system. Furthermore, these pistols have an automatic firing pin block. The Zigana PX-9 model is manufactured in Malaysia in collaboration with Turkey. Local workshops in Pakistan produce and sell Zigana models illegally.

In the United States, Zigana is imported by American Tactical Imports and marketed under the FS9 and FS40 brand names. Furthermore, the Zigana K and Zigana F models are licenced by the Ministry of Defense Industry of the Republic of Azerbaijan under the names Zfr, Zfr-K, and Inam.

Let us remind you, according to several reports, the same weapon i.e, Zigana pistol, was used in the killing of Punjabi singer Moosewala.

</excerpt>

Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Virendra Sachdeva claimed that Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal spoke a vocabulary akin to that of murdered gangster Atiq Ahmed.

Notably, Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal was questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday in connection with the issue involving suspected irregularities in the formulation and application of the Union Territory government’s excise policy. Atiq Ahmed, a gangster-turned-politician, and his brother Ashraf Ahmed were assassinated on Saturday night in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, while being transported for a medical check. Atiq was charged with murder in both the February 2018 Umesh Pal murder case as well as the 2005 Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Raju Pal murder case.

Delhi BJP chief Sachdeva said, “Kejriwal today is speaking the same language as gangster Atiq, trying to avoid the questions of the investigating agencies by giving arguments like him. Why were Rs 144 crores waived off of the liquor mafia?”

“Why doesn’t Vijay Nair talk on the issues of Sameer Mahendru? Why did Kejriwal hide the fact that Vijay Nair had made the government residence his home? Nair himself has said in his statement that he was called to Arvind Kejriwal’s house and told that whatever changes have happened in the Excise Policy, only that has to be implemented,” added the Delhi BJP chief.

In February, his bail was denied by the trial Court alongwith others. While rejecting the bail plea, the Rouse Avenue Court observed that none of the applicants/accused deserved to be released on bail in this case at this stage of proceedings as the allegations made against them were quite serious and related to the commission of an economic offence of money-laundering defined by Section 3 and made punishable by Section 4 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA). Hence, their bail applications were dismissed.The ED in its second chargesheet in the liquor policy case had named Vijay Nair, Sharath Reddy, Binoy Babu, Abhishek Boinpally, Amit Arora and seven companies.
Former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia was also arrested by the CBI and ED in a case of alleged irregularities in the framing and implementation of the excise policy of the Delhi government.

Addressing a press conference, he had said, “Tomorrow, they (CBI) have called me and I will definitely go. If Arvind Kejriwal is corrupt then there is no one in this world who is honest… If BJP has ordered CBI to arrest me, then CBI will obviously follow their instructions.”

Later, taking to Twitter, Kejriwal said appropriate cases will be filed against Central Bureau of Investigation and Enforcement Directorate officials for “perjury and producing false evidence in courts.

“We will file appropriate cases against CBI and ED officials for perjury and producing false evidence in courts,” he tweeted.Kejriwal also claimed that he knew he would be next in line to be summoned by the CBI since the day he spoke against corruption in the Delhi assembly.

“Three individuals have been arrested. More information will be provided later “said an officer following the shooting deaths of the gangster-turned-politician and his brother in Prayagraj.
Following the incident, AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi stated that it is a perfect example of Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi’s failure on law and order. Asaduddin Owaisi stated on Twitter, “Atiq and his brother were detained by police. He was restrained by handcuffs. JSR slogans were also sung. Both were murdered as a result of Yogi’s law and order system failing. Those who are celebrating Raj’s capture are also to blame for his death “. Earlier, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav stated that crime in the state has peaked and that the morale of “criminals” has grown by leaps and bounds.
“Crime has reached a peak in UP, and criminal morale is high. When someone can be openly killed despite being surrounded by a security cordon, one can only imagine how the general public feels. The public is being instilled with fear as a result of this (alleged encounter killings). It appears that some people are purposefully creating such an atmosphere “Akhilesh Yadav posted on Twitter.

</excerpt>

Amid attacks from the Opposition over the killing of arrested gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed’s son, Asad, in an exchange of fire in Haryana’s Jhansi on Thursday, the UP’s Special Task Force (STF) personnel on Friday condemned the killing of Umesh Pal, calling it an assualt on the state’s criminal justice system.

Asad and his aide Ghulam, who were involved in the killing of Umesh Pal, a key witness to the murder of BSP leader Raju Pal, were gunned down by the STF on Thursday. Speaking to ANI on Friday, Additional Director General, UP STF, Amitabh Yash said, “Yesterday, Asad and Ghulam were killed in an encounter. Both had killed two police personnel and Umesh Pal. Their crime was recorded on the CCTV camera. Yesterday, STF DSP Navendu Kumar lodged an FIR against them.”

“The post-mortem has been completed. Now their family members can take custody of their bodies and perform the last rites,” he added.
The ADG said, “This was a huge operation in which the STF had deployed all its teams. It was a very important case.”

“It (murder of Umesh Pal) was a direct attack on our criminal justice system. If key witnesses continued to be killed in this manner, no one will ever have the courage to depose in court. The entire criminal justice system will collapse,” he added.
Asad received two bullet injuries, confirmed doctors at Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College, Jhansi where his body was brought for post-mortem examination.
Asad’s aide Ghulam, who was also shot dead in the firing, suffered one bullet injury, they said.

Both Asad and Ghulam were wanted for Umesh Pal’s murder in Prayagraj. Both carried a cash reward of Rs 5 lakh on their heads.
Earlier, the state’s Special Director General (Law and Order), Prashant Kumar, revealed that teams of civil police and special forces were deployed following intelligence inputs of a plan by Asad to free his jailed gangster father by attacking the convoy, which brought him to UP for hearing.

“We had information that to help the accused Atiq and Ashraf escape, there could be an attack on the police convoy assigned to bring them back to UP to stand trial in the Umesh Pal murder case. On the basis of this information, teams of civil police and special forces were deployed,” said Prashant Kumar.

Sharing further details of the exchange of fire that went down at Jhansi on Thursday, he said that based on the intelligence input, two teams were deployed and Asad was intercepted while he was on a bike along with his aide Ghulam.

“Action was taken on the basis of information and between 12.30 and 1 pm, they were killed in a retaliatory firing,” Kumar said, adding that the Special Task Force conducted the entire operation.
He said special teams were constituted to probe the Umesh Pal murder and had been on the lookout for the culprits.
On March 28, Atiq Ahmed was convicted by an MP-MLA court and sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment in the abduction and murder of Umesh Pal.

Atiq Ahmed and his family came under the scanner in the Umesh Pal murder case.
Atiq, who was wanted in over 100 cases over the last 43 years, was finally convicted in the Umesh Pal murder case.
Umesh Pal and one of his two armed security escorts was shot dead in Prayagraj’s Sulem Saray area on February 24. The second police gunner, assigned for his security, too, succumbed to his injuries later in hospital.
Several rounds were fired and bombs hurled at Umesh Pal and his gunners, according to officials.

</excerpt>

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) seized Rs 75 lakhs in Indian and foreign currency, as well as documents pertaining to nearly 200 bank accounts and 50 shell entities, from the jailed gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad and his associates’ premises. The seizure came after an ED sleuth raid on 15 locations in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj on Wednesday. The documents seized during these raids related to nearly 200 bank accounts and 50 shell entities, according to the ED, were used for laundering ill-gotten money generated through extortion, land grabbing, and other criminal activities.
“Over 100 properties in the names of Atiq Ahmad’s close associates and firms have also been discovered. These are believed to be Atiq’s benami properties “According to the federal agency. “The searches have also turned up cash transactions worth more than 50 crores. Documents pertaining to properties (forcibly) purchased from farmers, allegedly through criminal intimidation, have also been discovered.”
The agency raided the homes of Atiq and his relative Khalid Zafar, his advocate-cum-accomplice Saulat Hanif Khan, his associates Asad, Vadood Ahmad, Kali, Mohsin, chartered accountant Sabeeh Ahmad, chartered accountant Asif Jafri, Seetaram Shukla (accountant), real estate developers Sanjeev Aggarwal and Deepak Bhargav on Wednesday.
The raids were part of the ED’s ongoing money laundering investigation into Atiq and those associated with him. The raids occurred while Ahmad was being transported to Prayagraj from the Sabarmati Jail in Gujarat for his appearance in a local court in connection with the Umesh Pal murder case. The case in which Ahmad is on trial is linked to the February 24 murder of Pal and his two police security guards outside his home in Prayagraj’s Dhoomanganj area. Uttar Pradesh Police had registered a First Information Report (FIR) on February 25 against Ahmad, his brother Ashraf, his wife Shaista Parveen, two sons, aides Guddu Muslim and Ghulam, and nine others following a complaint lodged by Pal’s wife.
In 2021, the ED had attached immovable and movable assets, consisting of land and money in several bank accounts worth Rs 8.14 crore, belonging to mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad and his wife in connection with the money laundering case.
Land property situated at mauza Katka, Paragana Jhunsi, Tehsil Phulpur, in name of Shaista Parveen, wife of Ahmad was attached. This was acquired by Ahmad for only Rs 4.5 crore which is far below the government’s value of Rs 6.86 crore. In addition, the ED had also attached a bank account balance of Rs 1.28 crore lying in 10 bank accounts of Ahmad and one account of Shaista Parveen.
The ED initiated an investigation under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) after taking cognizance of several FIRs lodged against Ahmad in different police stations, related to murder, extortion, cheating, forgery, land grabbing and crimes of similar nature.Following its investigation under the PMLA, the ED stated that Ahmad earned black money in cash through criminal activities and that it was deposited in several bank accounts of the gangster, his kin, and close associates.
The ED has noticed that these funds are being credited to their accounts from various firms and companies of his aides, the ED previously stated, adding that “these funds have been further utilised for buying land in the name of his wife at a consideration price far below the government’s value.”
According to the ED, it gathered information from the IT department and other agencies related to the companies run by Ahmad’s aides.

</excerpt>

The family of Umesh Pal welcomed Tuesday’s verdict of a Uttar Pradesh court, which handed life terms to the mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed in the advocate’s kidnapping, and has sought life terms for the accused in the ongoing murder case of the lawyer who was killed last month.

A Prayagraj MP-MLA court, which today held the five-time MLA and two others guilty in the abduction case, however, acquitted seven others, including the mafia turned politician’s brother Ashraf. Umesh Pal’s mother said that she has faith in Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and the court and said that Atiq Ahmed should be given a death sentence in her son’s murder case.

“He (Atiq Ahmed) was sentenced to life imprisonment for kidnapping my son, but he should be given a death sentence for the murder of my son. I have faith in UP CM Yogi Adityanath,” Shanti Devi said after the court delivered its verdict.

“My son fought like a tiger. His case was almost over. He was hopeful that the verdict would be in his favour and that Atiq would be punished. Atiq got my son killed. It has been 18 years since my son was kidnapped. He was a fighter. I have faith in the court,” she told reporters here.

“Atiq is an old criminal. He can do anything with the power of money,” she added. Jaya Devi, Umesh Pal’s widow, stated that her family will face difficulties as long as Atiq and his brother are alive.

“It was a case of kidnapping. We won’t protest against the judgement. We are satisfied with the judgement as of now. Atiq Ahmed should be given a death sentence for killing my husband. We want justice, and I request that UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath help us. If he( Atiq Ahmed) and his brother survive, it will be a problem for us and the society,” Jaya Devi said.

She expressed her apprehension that Atiq Ahmed could trouble her family from inside the jail and urged the Chief Minister to intervene. “I will carry forward the fight that my husband was fighting because I want justice and not terror. I want his terror to end. I am scared (of attacks on the family)… They can do anything from inside the jail. Atiq and Ashraf should not remain. I seek the death penalty for them,” Umesh Pal’s widow said.

Umesh Pal was killed in broad daylight on 24 February this year. He was a prime witness in the BSP MLA Raju Pal murder case. The Prayagraj MP-MLA Court today pronounced life sentences to Atiq Ahmed, Dinesh Pasi, and Khan Saulat Hanif in the case and also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on each of the three. All the other seven accused in the case, including Ashraf, the brother of Atiq Ahmed, have been acquitted.

</excerpt>

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court rejected Atiq Ahmed’s petition for protection and asked him to take his complaint to the concerned High Court. Justices Ajay Rastogi and Bela M. Trivedi’s bench rejected Atiq Ahmed’s petition for protection. After Atiq and his brother were found guilty in the kidnapping case, the court will announce 2:00 PM today.

Atiq Ahmed’s lawyer urged the top court to issue some directions for his protection as there is a threat to his life. The court noted that he has been taken to Uttar Pradesh. But the lawyer said the threat to his life continues. The court observed that state machinery will take care of the issue. Atiq Ahmed’s lawyer reiterated his request and said that unless some protection shall be given till he moves to High Court as he only wants to ensure his client’s safety.

Atiq Ahmed has moved Supreme Court seeking direction to the Centre to protect his life and restrain from taking him from central jail Ahmedabad to Prayagraj or any part of the state of UP.

Atiq Ahmed in his plea sought to restrain from taking him from central jail Ahmedabad to Prayagraj or any part of the state of UP apprehending that he may be killed in any fake encounter.

The petitioner has said that he with his entire family have been roped in as accused persons in Dhoomanganj in Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh in the murder case of one Umesh Pal. “Further, the Chief Minister of the State, without any investigation merely based on suspicion, has made a statement on the floor of the State Assembly that the Petitioner will be destroyed and eliminated,” the petitioner said.

In such circumstances, Petitioner Ahmad had said that he is constrained to file the present petition before the Court for the protection of his life as he genuinely apprehends and believes that he may be killed in fake encounters on one pretext or the other by UP police. The petitioner submitted that it is a deep political conspiracy against the petitioner and his family member’s petitioner.

The petitioner sought to direct respondent Govt. of India to ensure the safety and security of the Petitioner and that no physical injury or any other harm is caused to the person of the Petitioner and his family members made accused in the said FIR.
The petitioner had sought to issue appropriate direction restraining the authority from taking the Petitioner from Central Jail, Ahmedabad to Prayagraj or any part of the State of UP and carry out an interrogation of the Petitioner, if any, at Central Jail, Ahmedabad, Gujarat or at any other suitable place at Ahmedabad itself where the Petitioner is presently imprisoned under the protection of Gujarat Police as well as Central forces/ paramilitary forces.

The petitioner has sought to direct the transit of the Petitioner from Ahmedabad to UP under the protection of any central police forces paramilitary force if at all the transit of the Petitioner is necessary to UP.

Ahmad has said that he has no motive to kill Umesh Pal, who was the complainant in a separate case against him because the trial is going to end next month and there was nothing left to be done by Umesh Pal in the trial of that matter.
“It was very well known to the rivals of Petitioner that if anything were to happen to Umesh Pal then Petitioner would certainly be the prime suspect given the pending case against him by Umesh Pal and he will be made an accused. The same has been done,” read the petition.
