</excerpt>

A huge asteroid called 2025 JR is grabbing the world’s attention as it hurtles towards Earth for a flyby. About the size of a 25-storey building, the space rock will be passing closest on Wednesday, May 28. Although it will pass safely by Earth at a distance of 4.6 million kilometers, that’s unusually close in astronomical terms. The asteroid’s dimension and velocity—coupled with its Earth-crossing orbit—have excited scientists, space organizations, and skygazers alike. Although there is no threat of impact, the flyby is an apt reminder of how close—and capricious—near-Earth objects can become, underlining the imperative for sustained vigilance and space readiness.

Speed, Size, and Classification of 2025 JR

On May 28, 2025, Asteroid 2025 JR will safely pass by Earth at 8:40 am IST, measuring approximately 250 feet (76 meters) in diameter, a healthy size in space. It is an Apollo-class near-Earth object (NEO) a class characterized by asteroids whose orbits cross Earth’s orbit around the Sun. Being of this type of orbital feature, these asteroids are closely monitored for the amount of harm they might be able to cause. The asteroid moves at a mind-boggling 40,800 km/h, a speed that, if it were orbiting the Earth, would complete the transit in less than an hour. Although 2025 JR is not considered a “potentially hazardous asteroid” as it is lower than the threshold of 460 feet (140 meters), it is substantial enough that if it hit the Earth, the devastation would be catastrophic.

Theoretical Impact Scenario: A Catastrophic Blow

If asteroid 2025 JR were to collide with Earth, the devastation would be terrible. Travelling at stunning speed, the impact energy would be that of a few nuclear bombs exploding simultaneously. This would pulverize a lot, cause massive explosions, and maybe even lead to massive loss of life. One of the classic historical analogies most commonly given is the 1908 Tunguska asteroid or comet blast in Siberia, where an asteroid or comet measuring about 160–200 feet in diameter exploded in the air. The blast destroyed around 2,000 square kilometers of trees—an area greater than the city of Delhi—demonstrating the devastating power unleashed by relatively minor space bodies.

International Efforts towards Tracking and Monitoring

Tracking the asteroid 2025 JR is a complex procedure which involves the entire world. The activity is coordinated by NASA’s Centre for Near-Earth Object Studies by gathering data from an array of telescopes and radar facilities around the world. Amateur astronomers also contribute by scanning the sky for unknown objects. The network helps researchers to better predict near-approach and potential impact events. But with all of these advances, there are still many space rocks that remain unknown, challenging planetary defense on an ongoing basis.

While there’s no immediate threat, NASA considers it ‘potentially hazardous’ due to its size, speed, and Earth-crossing orbit, prompting global monitoring.
</excerpt>

A huge asteroid, almost as broad as three football fields, is hurtling towards Earth for what NASA describes as a “close approach,” inciting increased scrutiny by world planetary defense specialists. Officially designated as Asteroid 2003 MH4, the 335-metre wide behemoth is set to fly by Earth on May 24, 2025, at an incredible velocity of 14 kilometres per second—sufficient to travel from Delhi to Mumbai within less than a minute.

‘Potentially’ Hazardous Asteroid

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) defines the asteroid as coming as close as 6.68 million kilometres to Earth. From a human point of view, that is very far. Astronomically speaking, however, it’s a close call. NASA defines anything larger than 150 metres in diameter and closer than 7.5 million kilometres to Earth as a “Potentially Hazardous Asteroid,” and 2003 MH4 definitely fits into that category. Researchers at NASA’s Centre for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) are closely monitoring its trajectory.

2003 MH4 is part of the Apollo family, a clan of Earth-crossing asteroids discovered for the first time in 1932. The family now consists of over 21,000 known members, some with orbits intersecting Earth’s path. These asteroids are monitored by a global network of ground-based telescopes and computer models that predict their paths.

Future Flybys Could Be Risky

In spite of its size and velocity, the asteroid is not an immediate threat of collision when it is scheduled to make its next pass. Still, scientists are on notice because of its size and orbital trajectory. The asteroid orbits the Sun in approximately 410 days, so it might make multiple close flybys in the future. A small adjustment in its path—perhaps from gravitational slingshots—might raise the odds of collision in the future.

“We’re monitoring its path closely not because of an imminent threat, but because its orbital characteristics make it worth watching,” scientists suggest.

Asteroid 2003 MH4 is only one of many space rocks that are being monitored on an ongoing basis. Asteroid Apophis, which at one time was thought to collide with Earth in 2029, was cleared as a potential threat following years of research. In the meantime, both 2024 YR4 and 2025 FA22 are being monitored. Of special interest is 2025 FA22, which is forecast to fly by close in 2089, although at the moment the chance of a collision is just 0.01%.

As the flyby date nears, scientists worldwide are getting set to closely monitor 2003 MH4. Although it won’t be a threat to Earth at this pass, it reminds us of a sobering fact: we reside in a volatile and possibly menacing solar system.

Near-Earth Asteroids like 2025 AB originate in the asteroid belt and are influenced by gravitational forces. Despite their proximity, the chances of collisions with Earth remain extremely low.
</excerpt>

On 3 January 2025, Asteroid 2025 AB, a 42-foot Near-Earth Asteroid, gave Earth a flyby at an astonishingly close proximity: a mere 1,53,000 km, less than half the distance to the Moon. Such asteroids, being about the size of a bus, are quite common and provide a goldmine for scientists and sky gazers in the form of observation and research opportunities.

Classification and Grouping of Near-Earth Asteroids

Astrild 2025 AB is among the Near-Earth Objects (NEOs), such a category that entails both asteroids and comets whose orbits bring it closer to Earth than 1.3 AU, or, approximately 45 million kilometers in solar distance. Under the NEA category, NEAs are differentiated into four; Atira, Aten, Apollo, and Amor. It’s noteworthy that 2025 AB belongs to the Aten group. Asteroid 2062 Aten is named after an asteroid found by Eleanor Helin in 1976. The Aten asteroids are described by having a semi-major axis or the average distance of the Sun from the orbit, less than 1.0 AU and its aphelion, farthest point from the Sun is larger than 0.983 AU.

By 2024, scientists had identified 2,062 Aten asteroids, of which 191 are considered potentially hazardous. Such classification underscores the need to monitor their orbits to determine any risks to Earth.

More About Asteroids

Asteroids differ in terms of size, from massive ones reaching 329 miles wide to relatively small at a length of around 30 feet. Although some of them are approaching the proximity of Earth, even when they are, the chances of a collision between asteroids and Earth are still extremely small. According to Franck Marchis, a senior planetary astronomer at the SETI Institute, “We believe they formed in the asteroid belt and got ejected by impact or their orbits were destabilized due to the presence of Jupiter resonances in the belt.”

Similarly, Jay Tate, director of the Spaceguard Center observatory in the UK, explained their origin: “Asteroids are ‘bits of a planet that didn’t happen’ that orbit the Sun between Mars and Jupiter in the Main Asteroid Belt. However, as they are relatively small, asteroids can be disturbed quite easily, so they can develop orbits that cross those of planets.”

Asteroids such as 2025 AB allow scientists to get closer to knowing the intricate details about celestial bodies. Though their paths bring them closer to Earth, careful observation guarantees that any possible dangers will be known far in advance. Thus, while there is interest in the matter, there is also the need to research these cosmic travelers.

</excerpt>

Astronomers are giving close attention to asteroid 2024 XS3 this week while it makes its fly-by past Earth on December 18. The 84-foot space rock, being referred to as a “near-miss,” though carries no risk of impact, science says.

The asteroid will pass Earth from a distance of 2,080,000 miles, which is over 16 times the distance between Earth and the Moon. Traveling at a speed of 23,423 miles per hour, it will make its closest approach at 01:54 AM IST. Experts reassure the public that this event is harmless but offers a unique observation opportunity.

Why Tracking Asteroids is Crucial

These asteroids, such as 2024 XS3, are leftovers from the early days of the solar system, 4.6 billion years ago. Their study can give important information on Earth’s history. With the memory of the asteroid impact that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs, scientists stress the importance of monitoring these objects.

Tools for Planetary Defence

NASA uses current and cutting-edge technologies including radar and tools from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory to track and measure NEOs. Also, missions like OSIRIS-REx, and Hayabusa2 have collected samples from the asteroid. This will help in answering how the solar system was formed.

For planetary defense, the closest pass of Asteroid 2024 XS3 is also important because there is nothing that can be threatened right now. However, events like these enhance knowledge about space.

</excerpt>

In a spectacular cosmic event, a small asteroid entered Earth’s atmosphere Tuesday night, causing a bright fireball over northeastern Russia. Residents of the distant Sakha Republic in Siberia could view the space rock disintegrate mid-air, gathering outdoors to take in the spectacle. The event was a surprise gift to the locals, since the asteroid was discovered only 12 hours before its fiery entry, as confirmed by the European Space Agency (ESA).

A Sudden Cosmic Surprise: The COWEPC5 Asteroid

A 70 cm-long asteroid called COWEPC5 entered the Earth’s atmosphere at 1:15 AM local time (16:15 GMT) in a bright fireball that lit up Yakutia, Russia. The international efforts of astronomers made possible the exact determination of when the asteroid entered down to a second. According to ESA, it was only on the other half day that it detected that the object entered, and so the global alert system kept tracking its movement.

Predicting the Impact: Astronomers’ Remarkable Accuracy

The asteroid entered Earth’s atmosphere and broke into smaller pieces, which likely scattered across a remote forest area in Yakutia. In anticipation of the event, the Sakha emergencies ministry had issued warnings to local officials to be on the lookout. The event did not cause any harm or injuries, and authorities confirmed that the fireball was harmless.

HAVE A LOOK AT THE VIRAL POST:

NASA credited the discovery of COWEPC5 to the Bok telescope from the University of Arizona that provided essential data for size and trajectory of the asteroid. According to NASA’s statement, “At 11:14 AM EST, a very small asteroid will impact the Earth’s atmosphere and create a harmless fireball over Russia’s Olyokminsky district.

The fireball videos also began to make rounds soon. Many localities captured a jaw-dropping light display in their cameras. As social media buzzed with an air of wonder over how closely the space body was being tracked and reported, some of the users posted remarks like “Wait – that’s not the mother ship?!! I thought there was supposed to be an alien invasion today lol.”

Others were simply amazed by the event’s timing, with one user commenting, “Amazing they could pick up, track, and predict something so small really.” The fireball display reminded people of previous similar events caused by asteroids like 2022 WJ, 2023 CX1, and 2024 BX1, which also lit up the sky upon entry into Earth’s atmosphere.

The Future of Asteroid Tracking

This incident highlights the development of tracking and monitoring systems of asteroids that allow space agencies to predict these cosmic events with accuracy. The detection and tracking of COWEPC5 is a good example of how astronomers all over the world are increasingly capable of monitoring space objects and preventing possible risks.

With more and more asteroids tracked entering Earth’s atmosphere, predicting the phenomena continues to improve, giving astronomers a clearer picture of what orbits the Earth and what may have the potential to impact it.

</excerpt>

Earth’s moon will soon be joined by a “mini moon,” an asteroid measuring approximately 10 meters, roughly the size of a school bus. This mini moon, designated 2024 PT5, will swing by Earth on Sunday and be temporarily captured by our planet’s gravity, orbiting for about two months.

Astronomers at Complutense University of Madrid first identified the space rock in August using a powerful telescope situated in Sutherland, South Africa.

According to Richard Binzel, an astronomer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, these fleeting mini moons are likely more prevalent than we realize. The last known mini moon was detected in 2020. “This happens with some frequency, but we rarely see them because they’re very small and very hard to detect,” he noted. “Only recently has our survey capability reached the point of spotting them routinely.”

The discovery, made by Carlos de la Fuente Marcos and Raúl de la Fuente Marcos, was published by the American Astronomical Society. While this mini moon won’t be visible to the naked eye or through amateur telescopes, it “can be observed with relatively large, research-grade telescopes,” Carlos de la Fuente Marcos explained in an email.

Binzel, who was not part of the research team, mentioned that it remains unclear whether the space rock originated as an asteroid or was “a chunk of the moon that got blasted out.”

The mini moon is expected to circle Earth for nearly 57 days but will not complete a full orbit. It will depart on November 25, continuing its journey through space, with a predicted return in 2055.

Traveling at 25,000 mph and coming within 0.62 million miles from our own planet, the close encounter of the asteroid is newsworthy but not dangerous in terms of collision.

The first noticed on 5th September, 2024, is being followed by the Near-Earth Object Observations Programme of NASA with asteroid 2024 ON. The Virtual Telescope Project, also identified another near-Earth object which is asteroid 2024 RR3. This will safely pass Earth on June 7, 2024.

Research teams at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the Planetary Defense Coordination Office are studying 2024 ON in terms of its size, shape, and composition, using a combination of radar and telescopes. International efforts, including collaboration with the European Space Agency, are also underway to enhance planetary defense and understand near-Earth objects better. Size and Speed Compelling, Experts Note In spite of being said to be at least 100 meters wide and with a speed of about 24 kilometers per second, there is no cause for concern, experts add.

</excerpt>

An asteroid roughly the size of two football fields is scheduled for a close approach to Earth this month. According to the New York Post, the 720-foot-wide asteroid, designated 2024 ON, will pass by our planet at a distance of approximately 620,000 miles on September 15. Although this may seem like a vast distance, it is surprisingly close in astronomical terms—equivalent to just 2.6 times the distance between the Earth and the Moon. Despite this proximity, it poses no threat to our planet.

The Virtual Telescope Project notes that such a close encounter occurs roughly once every 10 years on average.

Skygazers in the northern hemisphere will have the opportunity to witness this rare and spectacular event, as the asteroid will be visible starting at 2:30 p.m. ET on September 15. The Virtual Telescope will offer a live feed of the event, and with clear skies, observers may also spot it using telescopes or strong binoculars.

This flyby of asteroid 2024 ON presents a unique and valuable opportunity for astronomers to gather essential data on its composition, velocity, rotation period, and orbital path. Such information is crucial for refining predictive models of Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) and enhancing our understanding of the complex dynamics of the solar system.

As NASA explains, asteroids are remnants from the formation of the solar system 4.6 billion years ago. “Not all asteroids are the same size and shape,” NASA notes. “Because asteroids are formed in different locations at different distances from the sun, no two asteroids are alike.” While most asteroids are composed of various types of rocks, some contain clays or metals, such as nickel and iron.

NASA maintains a continuous watch on near-Earth objects (NEOs) and updates a database tracking their trajectories. Asteroids with diameters larger than 150 meters (492 feet) and that come closer than 4.6 million miles (7.4 million kilometers) are classified as potentially hazardous asteroids (PHAs).

In its ongoing mission to study and mitigate potential asteroid threats, NASA is developing asteroid deflection technologies. The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission aims to test the feasibility of using a kinetic impactor spacecraft to change the course of an asteroid in space.

</excerpt>

NASA has alerted the public about a 90-foot asteroid, named 2020 PN1, which will pass by Earth today, August 2, 2024, at 6:31 PM IST (13:01 UTC). This asteroid, roughly the size of a small airplane, will be traveling at a speed of about 19,823 km/h.

2020 PN1 is classified as an Apollo asteroid, a type of near-Earth object (NEO) with orbits that intersect Earth’s path. While most NEOs don’t come close enough to pose a threat, some are categorized as potentially hazardous asteroids (PHAs). These are typically larger than 460 feet (140 meters) and come within 7.5 million kilometers of Earth. Although 2020 PN1 is much smaller, it is still monitored due to its close approach.

The asteroid will pass at a safe distance of approximately 6.8 million kilometers from Earth, which is close in astronomical terms but far enough to ensure no danger. NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) continuously tracks these objects to assess any potential risks.

If an asteroid like 2020 PN1 were to hit Earth, it could cause regional damage, similar to the 2013 Chelyabinsk event in Russia, where a smaller asteroid caused injuries and property damage. However, with ongoing monitoring and current data, there is no need for concern as 2020 PN1 poses no threat to our planet. NASA’s vigilant tracking ensures we are aware of any potential threats well in advance.

Recently, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory issued an alert about an asteroid, named 2024 KN1, expected to make its closest approach to Earth today. 2024 KN1, an asteroid roughly the size of an 88-foot airplane, is traveling at a speed […]
</excerpt>

Asteroids approaching Earth always capture public attention due to the potential catastrophic impact they could have. Recently, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory issued an alert about an asteroid, named 2024 KN1, expected to make its closest approach to Earth today.

2024 KN1, an asteroid roughly the size of an 88-foot airplane, is traveling at a speed of approximately 16,500 kilometers per hour. This celestial body belongs to the Amor group and will come closest to Earth on June 23, 2024, at 11:39 PM IST.

Despite the proximity, there is no cause for alarm. NASA has classified the asteroid as non-threatening, ensuring that its trajectory will maintain a safe distance of 5.6 million kilometers from Earth, thereby eliminating any risk of impact.

NASA has catalogued approximately 30,000 asteroids of varying sizes near Earth, including over 850 that are larger than a kilometer wide. These are classified as Near Earth Objects (NEOs). None of these currently pose a threat to Earth within the next 100 years. However, NASA closely monitors a smaller subset known as potentially hazardous asteroids, which have orbits that could potentially bring them closer to Earth, posing a risk of impact.

NASA’s asteroid tracking dashboard provides real-time data on asteroids and comets making close approaches to Earth. The dashboard displays critical information such as the date of the closest approach, the approximate diameter of the object, its relative size, and distance from Earth, specifically tracking those within 7.5 million kilometers.

According to NASA, asteroids are remnants from the formation of our solar system. These celestial bodies vary in size and shape, formed at different distances from the sun, making each one unique. Unlike planets, asteroids are often jagged and irregular in shape. They are primarily composed of various types of rocks, though some contain clays or metals such as nickel and iron.

</excerpt>

NASA has issued a public alert regarding asteroid 2024 KN1, which is set to have a close encounter with Earth on June 23, 2024, at 18:09 UTC (11:39 PM IST). This asteroid, categorized as part of the Amor group, measures approximately 88 feet in diameter and will travel at a speed of about 16,500 kilometers per hour.

While the asteroid’s approach poses no threat to Earth, it presents scientists with a valuable opportunity to study these near-Earth objects. Initial assessments of 2024 KN1 indicated a potential impact, but lacked precise details regarding its size, composition, and trajectory. Complicating matters, crucial follow-up observations were delayed by seven months due to the asteroid passing behind the Sun as viewed from Earth.

The ongoing monitoring of near-Earth objects, like asteroid 2024 KN1, is a key focus for NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS). This effort relies on data from observatories worldwide, including contributions from projects such as Pan-STARRS, the Catalina Sky Survey, and NASA’s NEOWISE mission. Radar projects, such as JPL’s Goldstone Solar System Radar Group, also play a vital role in tracking these space rocks.

NASA emphasizes that this monitoring allows astronomers to assess any potential impact risks from near-Earth objects well in advance. Amateur astronomers also contribute significantly to this effort, providing valuable data that aids international initiatives to understand and monitor these celestial bodies.

As technology and observational capabilities improve, so too will our understanding of near-Earth objects and their trajectories. This advancement will enhance our ability to predict and mitigate any potential future risks associated with these celestial objects.

For now, NASA reassures that asteroid 2024 KN1 will pass by Earth safely, offering scientists another chance to study these intriguing objects within our solar system.
