</excerpt>

The polling booths on Wednesday in Karnataka witnessed inclusive, vibrant, and peaceful voting, with a range of individuals turning out in large numbers to cast their votes. The diverse group included newlyweds and a heartwarming moment of childbirth, as well as tribals and trans people, highlighting the inclusivity of the state’s electoral process.
According to the Election Commission of India, which put the overall voter turnout at the close of polling on Wednesday at 72.68 percent, over 94,000 senior citizens and PwDs cast their votes from home in Karnataka, in what the poll panel said was a first in India’s electoral history.

Polling was largely peaceful in all 224 Assembly constituencies in Karnataka, with not a single incident at 58,545 polling stations that warranted repolling.
Advance planning, the use of technology, exhaustive reviews, and strict monitoring ensured the smooth conduct of elections, the EC said at the close of polling on Wednesday.
While the overall polling was recorded at 65.69 percent until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, the turnout rose to 66.02 percent as the day wore on.
Many voters who arrived at their designated polling stations at the closing hour were allowed to exercise their franchise. Many were seen queueing up outside polling stations at 6 p.m., the stipulated closing time, the EC informed.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, with fellow election commissioners Anup Chandra Pandey and Arun Goel, ensured advance planning and extensive monitoring for a smooth conduct of the Karnataka polls.
Bypolls were also held on Wednesday for the Jalandhar Lok Sabha constituency of Punjab, the Jharsuguda Assembly seat of Odisha, the Chhanbey Assembly constituency of Uttar Pradesh, to fill up seats vacated post the death of sitting members, the Suar Assembly seat of Uttar Pradesh (due to the disqualification of a sitting candidate), and the Sohiong Assembly constituency of Meghalaya, where polling had been adjourned previously due to the death of a candidate.
Voting percentages of 50.27 percent for Jalandhar, 68.12 percent for Jharsuguda, 39.51 percent for Chhanbey (SC), 41.78 percent for Suar, and 91.39 percent for Sohiong (ST) were recorded by the poll panel at 5 p.m.
Meticulous planning and regular and exhaustive reviews with chief secretaries and directors general of police of neighbouring states and other law enforcement agencies went into ensuring a smooth, free, fair, inclusive, and accessible polling in Karnataka on Wednesday.
Webcasting was arranged at over 30,000 polling stations, while adequate CAPF and microobservers were deployed at critical booths. CEC Kumar, while thanking the voters of Karnataka, said, “In the past 6 elections held in Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Tripura, and now in Karnataka, out of over 1.26 lakh polling stations, repolls were held only in 4 polling stations in Nagaland.”
As part of the commission’s initiative to provide a comfortable polling experience to women voters, 996 all-women polling stations were set up. These booths were unique as they had all-women polling staff and security personnel.
Newlyweds with cheerful faces were seen queuing up outside booths as polling kicked off at 7 a.m. on Wednesday.
Such was the enthusiasm among voters on the day that a 23-year-old pregnant woman, out to get her finger inked at Kurlagindi village in Ballari, went into labour outside the booth and delivered a newborn, the EC informed.

</excerpt>

On Wednesday, BJP President JP Nadda alleged that Congress has been putting obstacles in the path of the state’s development, adding that the manifesto of the grand old party for the upcoming 10 May Karnataka Assembly polls is the “manifestation of their mental level”.

Nadda launched a strong critique of the Congress manifesto that was recently made public. He stated, “Their manifesto is a reflection of their level of thinking.

Today, people are standing against the rule of dynasties and are yearning for progress. Therefore, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has taken the lead.” This critical comment was made in response to the Congress’ release of their manifesto for the upcoming Karnataka elections, in which they promised various initiatives such as ‘Gruha Jyoti’, ‘Gruha Lakshmi,’ and ‘Anna Bhagya’.

They also allegedly compared Bajrang Dal and PFI and declared that they will take strong legal action, including banning any groups that promote hostility and animosity.

</excerpt>

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai stated on Tuesday that the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Parliamentary Board would complete and publish the list of candidates for the state’s forthcoming Assembly elections on April 8.

According to the Chief Minister, the contenders were chosen based on their likelihood of winning. Elections for the Karnataka Assembly will take place on May 10 and the results will be tallied on May 13.

He further said that the names recommended by the district committees will be discussed during the State Core Committee meeting on Tuesday and then sent to the Central Parliamentary Board.

Reiterating that the party will return to power in the assembly polls, he said, Witnessing developments in the last three to four days, the BJP will get an absolute majority in the coming assembly polls.”

“Unexpected results would come in some constituencies.” “The rank and file of the party are confident of the BJP getting a full majority in the May 10 polls,” he said.

“The Congress Party will not come to power, and they are fighting for the seats that they cannot win,” Bommai said, pointing to the fighting taking place in the Congress. That party is not doing well for the people of Karnataka; instead, it is vying for control and the position of chief minister. The statements made by Siddaramaiah reveal what is going on within the Congress party. Siddaramaiah has been claiming to be the CM, while KPCC President DKShivakumar has been going around asking for approval to become the CM.

</excerpt>

India slammed Pakistan at the 146th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly in Bahrain on Monday. In its speech at the IPU Assembly, Pakistan referred to Kashmir in its usual manner. India in a Right to Reply slammed Pakistan terming it an “exporter of terrorists”. India also reiterated that Pakistan has no right or capacity to bring an action or to appear in court on Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Rajya Sabha MP Sasmit Patra, in his speech, said: “It is unfortunate that Pakistan has chosen once again to misuse the august platform by mentioning in their statement about Jammu and Kashmir which is an integral part of India. This mentioning is completely unacceptable.”

Patra further said, “The Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh have been and will always remain an integral and inalienable part of India. No amount of rhetoric and propaganda from any country can override this fact. Pakistan has no locus standi to comment on India’s internal affairs. We have repeatedly called upon it to vacate the Indian territories under its illegal and forcible occupation with immediate effect. It is ironic that a country, which is a known exporter of terrorists, and responsible for inflicting countless cross-border terrorist attacks in Jammu and Kashmir is claiming to champion the cause of human rights.”

The comments made by Pakistan’s foreign minister, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, on the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir during a discussion on “Women, Peace and Security” at the UN Security Council in March were described as frivolous, baseless, and politically motivated by India’s permanent representative to the UN, Ruchira Kamboj.

She had said: “It’s unworthy to even respond to such malicious and false propaganda.” Kamboj said, “Our focus has been and will always be positive and forward-looking.”
India slamming Pakistan at the global Parliamentary body, yet again exposed the latter’s false propaganda on Kashmir.
India’s heft and prowess on the international parliamentary platform has been acknowledged and appreciated by other member countries.

National and provincial elections will take place in Nepal on Sunday. The Nepali-Congress-led ruling coalition is expected to win the elections. However, it is unlikely to provide much-needed political stability in the country.

In seven provinces across the Himalayan nation, more than 17.9 million individuals are eligible to vote. Voting will take place from 7 am local time to 5 pm.

165 of the 275 members of the federal parliament will be chosen by direct election, and the other 110 will be chosen using a proportional system.

Similar to this, 330 of the 550 members of the Provincial Assembly will be chosen directly, while the remaining 220 will be chosen via a proportional system. Security precautions and preparations have been made in full.

Political analysts who were closely following the elections projected a hung parliament and an administration that would probably not bring Nepal the necessary level of political stability.
Since the end of the decade-long Maoist insurgency, political instability has frequently been a feature of Nepal’s Parliament, and no prime minister has held office for a full term since the end of the civil war in 2006.

A slow economy has been attributed to party squabbles and frequent changes.

The democratic and leftist alliance led by the Nepali Congress and the leftist, pro-Hindu, pro-monarchy alliance led by the CPN-UML are the two main political coalitions engaged in a political battle for the November 20 general elections.

While the CPN-UML-led coalition includes the pro-Hindu Rastriya Prajatantra Party and the Madhes-based Janata Samajwadi Party, the Nepali Congress-led coalition comprises the CPN-Maoist Centre, CPN-Unified Socialist, and Loktantrik Samajwadi Party.

In order to defeat Oli, Deuba, a five-time prime minister, has teamed together with former Maoist guerilla leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda.

The future administration will have to balance relations with China and India as well as maintain a stable political system and the tourism sector.

Chattisgarh government will convene a special session of the state Assembly next month to hold talks on the situations emerged following the High Court order that resulted in the reduction of scheduled tribes (ST) quota.

On the issue of tribal reservation, Chattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel has sent a proposal to assembly speaker to hold a two-day special session in December. “Special Assembly Session- Sent a proposal to Assembly speaker Dr. Charandass Mahant Jee for convening a special session of Assembly on the issue of tribal reservation. The request has been made to convene the special session of the Assembly on December one and two.” CM tweeted.

There has been a constant resentment in the tribal communities over the reservation issue and amidst the resentment; Chattisgarh government’s decision to convene special session is significant. High Court’s decision resulted in reduction of scheduled tribes (ST) quota from 32 percent to 20 percent in jobs and admissions to educational institutions of the State and most likely discussions are bound to take place in this matter.

During the inauguration of the three-day Chhattisgarh Tribal Festival, Baghel made it very clear that his government would soon move the Supreme Court to increase reservation for tribals in the state according to their population.

In 2011-12, when tribals agitated, the state government gave 32 per cent reservation to them, 12 per cent to SCs and 14 per cent to OBCs, leading to a total of 58 per cent reservation, holding that any quota above 50 per cent is unconstitutional. Later, two committees had been set up but they never presented their reports before the court and this led to the high court annulling the decision on reservation. Baghel said.

A bill to ban hookah bars in the state has been passed by Tamil Nadu assembly.

M.Subramanian, the state’s minister of health, brought the bill to the Assembly on Wednesday, and it was approved without a vote. The bill claimed that a vast number of hookah bars had sprung up around Chennai, posing serious health risks due to the fact that many eateries had permitted the use of hookah in smoking areas or zones while ostensibly delivering a service.

As of now there is no law to regulatge hookah bars in the state. The Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003 (Central Act 34 of 2003) was ended to apply properly to the State of Tamil Nadu in the bill filed by Minister M. Subramanian.

The state administration has decided to outlaw hookah bars and to impose a penalty of up to three years in prison and a fine of up to 50,000 rupees for any violations.
This bill allows any police officer the authority to seize any materials or items used as subjects for hookah bar means, but not below the rank of a Sub Inspector to seize any material or article used as a subject for means of Hookah Bar. Hookah bars are common in various states. Tamil Nadu assembly took a brave decision of passing a bill to ban hookah bars in the state.

A day after Governor Banwarilal Purohit called a special session of the Punjab assembly to bring a confidence motion, chief minister Bhagwant Mann convened a meeting of AAP MLAs and announced that the session would now be called on September 27 with a revised agenda, including a discussion of the problem of paddy stubble burning.

The AAP MLAs, who met at the assembly complex on Thursday to discuss the strategy, also decided to take the governor’s decision to cancel the special session on September 22 to the Supreme Court.

According to party sources, a meeting of the Punjab cabinet was also called following the MLA meeting.

Later, AAP legislators marched to Chandigarh’s Raj Bhawan, the governor’s residence, to express their displeasure.

Because of a cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Mann and his ministers did not join the march.

AAP leader Baljinder Kaur called the governor’s decision to withdraw Tuesday’s special session order a “mockery of democracy.”

Purohit, in an embarrassment to the AAP government in Punjab, thwarted the regime’s plan to call a special assembly session to bring a confidence motion on Wednesday. The governor stated that he sought legal advice after the Congress and BJP approached the Raj Bhawan, claiming that the House rules prohibited such a motion.

While AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh slammed the governor for not allowing the assembly session, saying it calls the country’s democracy into question, opposition parties praised Purohit for preventing the Mann government from “sabotaging the constitutional and legislative practises and procedures.”

The AAP government in Punjab had requested the session to bring a confidence motion, just days after accusing the BJP of attempting to destabilise the state government.

The AAP recently claimed that the BJP approached at least ten of its MLAs and offered them each Rs 25 crore in a bid to destabilise the six-month-old government as part of ‘Operation Lotus.’
