</excerpt>

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has stirred a fresh political controversy after he tweeted a cryptic message on Thursday, claiming that the minor children of a Member of Parliament from Assam are “no longer citizens of India.” While Sarma did not explicitly name the MP, political observers and opposition leaders believe the statement is aimed at Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, who represents the Kaliabor constituency.

Assam CM Sarma’s Post Triggers Reactions

“I say this with full responsibility the minor children of one Member of Parliament from Assam are no longer citizens of India. But this is just the beginning. There is much more yet to be revealed,” Sarma posted on X (formerly Twitter), triggering a flurry of reactions.

I say this with full responsibility — the minor children of one Member of Parliament from Assam are no longer citizens of India. But this is just the beginning. There is much more yet to be revealed.

— Himanta Biswa Sarma (@himantabiswa) May 1, 2025

The tweet, cryptic but full of suggestion, is at a politically delicate moment. With the Lok Sabha elections around the corner, Assam’s parties have intensified their campaigns, and Sarma’s remarks are being interpreted as an effort to place the opposition above all, the Congress on the back foot.

Congress Defends Gaurav Gogoi

Sources in the BJP say that the tweet is one of the efforts to bring the Congress leadership’s “commitment to Indian values” into question. However, opposition leaders have criticized the action as a “cheap diversionary tactic” and “character assassination.”

Gaurav Gogoi, the son of former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, has as yet not reacted to the tweet publicly. Congress leaders in Assam have defended him, calling for the CM to either identify the MP and produce evidence or retract the statement.

APCC President Slams Assam CM’s Remarks

“Making such a serious allegation without naming anyone or producing evidence is unbecoming of a chief minister,” said Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Bhupen Borah. “This is a classic attempt to malign reputations for political gain.”

Experts in law have clarified that according to Indian law, children can enjoy dual citizenship but only in a limited number of circumstances, and the government must give a sufficient reason if the citizenship has been renounced or revoked.

With speculation building, everyone waits with bated breath for the next step from either party. Sarma’s tweet assures that “much more is yet to be revealed,” which implies that further revelations or accusations might be on the cards in the days to come.

Taking to X to share details from this meeting as well, Dr. Sarma wrote, “We are on track to ensure time-bound completion of the brownfield ammonia complex at Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Limited (BVFCL) in Namrup, which was recently approved by the Union Cabinet. Today in Delhi, the Union Fertiliser Secretary, Shri Rajat Kumar Mishra met me to discuss the current progress of this key initiative.”

It is worth noting that the Union Cabinet, on March 19, gave its nod to the establishment of the new Brownfield Ammonia-Urea Complex, which will be developed at a projected cost of Rs. 10,601.40 crore.

The Assam Cabinet held its 18th outstation meet in the historic town of Lakhimpur today. Several decisions to boost the district’s heritage and developmental trajectory were taken in the meeting.

The Cabinet has approved 57 out of 67 recommendations from the Justice (retd) Biplab Sarma Commission, which is a historic milestone for Assam. This stands as one of the most significant efforts since Independence to protect the rights of the people of Assam.

Further, the new Chief Minister’s office will be established in Dibrugarh, which will operate at least four days a month. It will be dedicated to serving the North and Upper Assam regions. Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan has called it a step for the decentralisation of power. Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan stated, “On September 6, 2024, the CM secretariat will be inaugurated in Dibrugarh. Its main aim is decentralised power and the people of upper Assam can easily sort out their problems here without going to Dispur. I would like to thank chief minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma for establishing the CM secretariat. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative for such development has been happening.

“It is a piece of very good news for the people of upper Assam because the CM secretariat is going to be inaugurated in Dibrugarh soon. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma will inaugurate the CM secretariat on September 6. The CM secretariat will immensely help the people of upper Assam. The people of upper Assam have to travel 500-550 km to reach Dispur for their work but now without any hassle, their work will be done here. After its establishment, the people of Dibrugarh could easily meet the chief minister to address their grievances. The people of North Bank can easily benefit after its establishment,” said Anil Poddar, a local resident.

Moreover, in a significant move to enhance the welfare of state government employees, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a new insurance scheme that promises substantial financial support for employees and their families in the event of accidents or untimely deaths. The Assam cabinet, during its latest meeting, approved an agreement with all banks to ensure the timely deposit of insurance premiums directly into employees’ salary accounts.

Dr. Vonk shared his excitement on Instagram, describing the encounter as a career highlight, especially due to the anaconda’s immense size and its significance within the Amazon ecosystem. </excerpt>

On Monday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma invited citizens to submit comments on his government’s proposed law to outlaw polygamy in the state.

The chief minister issued a government notification while appealing to the public for suggestions on his X (previously Twitter) profile. The notification cited an expert committee report proposing that the Assam assembly pass legislation prohibiting polygamy.

“Articles 25 and 26 provide freedom of conscience and the right to practice religion. However, these rights are not absolute and are subject to public order, morality, health and legislative provisions for social welfare and reform. The courts have clarified that religious practices must be essential and integral to religion to receive protection”, the notice read.

“With respect to Islam, the courts have held that having more than one wife is not an essential part of the religion. Legislation limiting the number of wives does not interfere with the right to practice religion and is within scope of “social welfare and reform”. Hence, laws favoring monogamy do not violate Article 25″, the government notice added.

“Considering these principles, the State of Assam would have the legislative competence to enact a state legislature to end polygamy,” it added.

On August 6, the Assam government’s expert committee appointed to investigate the state legislature’s legislative competence to enact a bill to prohibit polygamy submitted its findings to Sarma, who immediately stated that legislation on the subject will be filed within this fiscal year.

He further claimed that the group unanimously decided that the state may create its own laws to prohibit polygamy. On the occasion of the 77th Independence Day on August 15, Sarma stated in his official address that a “strict act” to ban polygamy in Assam will be introduced soon.

The Assam government has decided to book men who marry girls aged below 14 ears in the state under the Protection Children from Sexual Offences Act, Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. The major reason for the high maternal and infant mortality rate in the state is child marriage, he said. 31% of marriages in the state have been done in the prohibited age group.

POCSO Act of 2012 defines a child as an individual under the age of 18 and it criminalizes sex between an under-age and an adult. While cases will be registered under the POCSO Act 2006, if the bride us between 14 to 18 years for women and 21 for men.

The Panchayat Secretaries of the villages in the state will also be designated as child marriage prohibition officers. Hence, from now on, in case of a child marriage, the complaint will be lodged before the Panchayat Secretary of the village,” the CM added.

Firing a fresh salvo on Congress’s ongoing ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the country is already united and there is no need for Bharat Jodo Yatra.

Talking to the media Assam CM Sarma said, “The Congress’ theme (for the march) is totally wrong. If they had launched the march for ‘Swachh Bharat’ (clean India), education or health, it would have held some meaning for the public. Now that the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ has reached Assam, it would mean that the Congress supports the (statehood) demand of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA). It also implies, therefore, that the Congress believes Assam is not a part of India.”

Answering the need for holding a long foot march in several states Sarma said, “What is the sense in launching a ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ in Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and other states? Are these states not with India? Have they set out unite the country in a unique way?”

The Assam CM alleged, “We are all united and live as one. If someone starts a ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ in a state where peace, harmony, and unity prevail, then it is nothing but an insult to the state. It is like saying that the state is not with India.”

Earlier on 7 September Congress started the Bharat Jodo Yatra from Kanyakumari which will cover a distance of 3,570 km to Kashmir till next year.

Meanwhile, on 1 November Congress’s Assam unit launched a parallel foot march from Golakganj in the Dhubri district.

Moreover, at Dibrugarh University ragging incident took place in which CM Sarma said, “We will have to remove all ex-students from university campuses. The state government will launch an operation soon to ensure that no ex-students are staying at hostels of colleges or universities. I think it will reduce ragging incidents by at least 60 percent. Our government has resolved to undertake a major initiative to put an end to ragging. We will launch a crackdown on the practice.”

However, on several road connectivity projects in the state CM Sarma reviewed the progress work.

“Many road connectivity projects are currently underway in the state. These include the Guwahati-North Guwahati connecting bridge, which is coming up at a cost of Rs 2,608 crore, the Palasbari-Sualkuchi connecting bridge at a cost of Rs 3,197 crore, and the ‘Assam Mala’ projects in three phases at a cost of Rs 11,273 crore. The Lok Nirman Bibhag (public infrastructure department) of the state government is either implementing or has taken the initiative to implement these projects,” CM Sarma said.

Assam CM Sarma further added, “The (state) finance ministry has also sanctioned two externally-aided projects for the state — the entire road network in the Dima Hasao district at a cost of Rs 3,800 crore and converting the wooden bridges to concrete ones at a cost of Rs 4,000 crore. Apart from state-funded projects or those under PMGSY (Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana), road works on a massive scale at Rs 25,000 crore have either been sanctioned or are already being implemented. The state cabinet has approved three new flyovers in Guwahati and a road that will connect the airport’s new terminal to Azara.”

Following unrest at the Mukroh village on the Assam-Meghalaya border on Tuesday that left six people dead, Assam on Sunday lifted travel restrictions to Meghalaya, according to news agency ANI.

Speaking to ANI, DCP Sudhakar Singh from the Guwahati City Police said on Sunday that the police removed barricades in the Jorabat area along the Assam-Meghalaya border and allowed all vehicles to enter Meghalaya.

Travel restrictions were removed two days after Assam Police permitted trucks carrying commodities into Meghalaya for the first time since tensions between the two states flared up. However, only automobiles registered in Meghalaya were permitted admission.

Vehicles bearing Assam licence plates had been warned not to enter Meghalaya by the police in the past because they might be targeted.

Violence broke out on Tuesday between locals and an Assamese contingent made up of police and forest guards, leaving six people dead and a number of others hurt. After the contingent stopped a truck carrying timber that had been unlawfully cut, a fight broke out.

Five of the six victims were from Meghalaya, and one was a forest guard from Assam.

Assam’s chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, made it clear two days after the incident that there was no border dispute at the centre of the altercation. “Just to be clear, contrary to how it is depicted in the national media, the incident had nothing to do with the border. In essence, it was a dispute between the police and the villagers over specific forest timbers”, according to ANI, Sarma stated on Thursday.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed the 400th Birth Anniversary celebration of Lachit Barphukan and praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“PM Modi always inspires us to bring our history, unsung heroes to light. This is our humble effort to bring the proud saga of Lachit Barphukan before the country. But just the efforts of govt are not enough, there should be efforts from people, historians, too,” CM Biswa said.

Meanwhile, CM further said, it is not the land of just Aurangzeb, Babar, Jahangir, or Humayun but it is the land of Lachit Barphukan, Chhatrapati Shivaji, Guru Gobind Singh, and Durgadas Rathore.

“Humble request to historians-India isn’t just the story of Aurangzeb, Babar, Jahangir, or Humayun. India is of Lachit Barphukan, Chhatrapati Shivaji, Guru Gobind Singh, Durgadas Rathore. We should make an effort to see in a new light. It’ll fulfill our dream to be Vishwa Guru,” Assam CM said.

Moreover, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also talked about PM Modi and said the mantra of self-reliance given by PM Modi was a tribute to Lachit Barphukan.

“PM Modi, the mantra of self-reliance you gave to the people of the country through the ‘Make in India’ initiative, I feel is your tribute to Lachit Barphukan as the weapons and equipment he used in the fight against the Mughals were all built by the people of Assam,” Sonowal said.

“I think that the journey of Atmanirbhar Bharat began then and today you have encouraged the citizens to promote it before the world,” Sonowal said.

At the 400th Birth Anniversary celebration of Lachit Barphukan, in Delhi, Assam CM Sarma also felicitated PM Modi.

However, in the 400th Birth Anniversary celebration of Lachit Barphukan Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, Governor Jagadish Mukhi, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and others participated.

As part of the 400th Birth Anniversary celebration of Lachit Barphukan, the exhibition has been organized and was attended by PM Modi and Assam CM.

Furthermore, Lachit Barphukan was born on 24 November 1622 in Charaideo. Barphukan had great extraordinary military intelligence and in the Battle of Saraighat Barphukan halted the Mughals.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma talked about the firing incident and said firing has nothing to do with the border dispute between the two states.

The firing incident took place between Meghalaya villagers and a contingent of police and forest guards.

Talking to the media Sarma said, “Just to clarify that incident has nothing to do with the border, the way it is reported in national media. It was basically a clash between villagers and police regarding certain forest timbers.”

“The matter was related to some clash regarding timbers and we have ordered a judicial inquiry and also referred the matter to the investigation by CBI or NIA. Compensation has been announced and the person responsible is put under suspension,” Sarma said.

Meanwhile, Rs 5 lakh has been announced by the Assam Government to the kin of the six deceased persons, who died in the firing incident.

In the firing incident, six persons including one Assam forest official were killed in Mukroh in West Jaintia Hills on Tuesday.

Moreover, Meghalaya suspended mobile internet services in seven districts after the incident. The services were shut down across districts of Meghalaya namely West Jaintia Hills, East Jaintia Hills, East Khasi Hills, Ri-Bhoi, Eastern West Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, and South West Khasi Hills districts.

“I have also discussed with the Assam Chief Minister about the incident. We demand that a central agency should investigate. The National Investigative Agency (NIA) or Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) should inquire into and investigate the incident. The Assam government has also agreed and they will cooperate and they will also ask the Government of India for the same,” Sangma said.

Earlier on Wednesday Sangma met the family members of the victims.

“I have come here to ensure proper action will be taken. In the future, such oppression won’t happen. The border issue is our priority. I have discussed it with Assam CM. We’ll see central agencies probe the incident, Assam govt has also agreed to it,” Sangma said.

However, Sangma further said, “We are here to ensure that the action is taken, all steps are required to ensure that in future this kind of thing and the difficulties you are facing should not be there. The border issue is our top priority and we will do everything in our capacity and we are able to resolve the border issue at the earliest.”

Firing a fresh salvo at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s bearded appearance Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said Rahul resembled former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

Assam chief minister Biswa addressed a campaign in Ahmedabad and said, “If he (Rahul Gandhi) wanted to change his looks, why did not he choose to look like Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel or Jawaharlal Nehru? Even Gandhi Ji’s look would have been better, but why he is changing his face to look like Saddam Hussein now?”

Taking a dig at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra Sarma said, “Rahul Gandhi is visiting places where there are no elections.”

Meanwhile, the Assam CM’s statement went viral and said Congress called it a “stunt”.

“You (Assam CM) just want a headline and you get that only when you take Rahul Gandhi’s name. Himanta Biswa Sarma can say anything. He can go to any level for power. We don’t pay attention to such statement,” Assam Congress chief Bhupen Kumar Borah said

Moreover, condemning CM Biswa’s remark Rajasthan Cabinet Minister Pratap Singh Khachariyawas said, “He (Assam CM Sarma) is the same person who used to praise Rahul Gandhi, and now he is giving such shameful statements and comparing Rahul Gandhi with Saddam Hussein.”

“People like Sarma are criminals and he will never become the Chief Minister again. BJP must learn from Rahul Gandhi. India is in his DNA, and he considers the national flag his religion,” Khachariyawas said.

Assam’s chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in an interview has slammed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. He said that Rahul doesn’t have ‘a systematic sense of seriousness’ and therefore, ‘is not fit for politics’. Sharma was a member of the Congress party for over two decades and later he joined BJP in 2015.

He accused Rahul Gandhi of being non-serious as a politician, behaving like “a feudal lord” and being arrogant.
“The first thing is he is not fit for politics. Probably, the work he should not do, he is doing,” Sarma said.

He said that Rahul Gandhi would sometimes leave a meeting in between and would go for his exercise routine like jogging or suddenly go to another room and came after half an hour.

According to Sarma, Rahul Gandhi, who is currently on the Bharat Jodo Yatra from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, has accepted moral responsibility for the party’s loss in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and for his defeat in Amethi. He has resigned as party president but is still making important decisions for the party, Sarma said.

“I won’t be the president since Rahul accepted moral responsibility for the party’s defeat in the Lok Sabha elections when I was party leader. But who is currently in charge of the party and heading the Bharat Jodo Yatra? Who is the entire party pursuing? You wish to exercise authority without being held accountable, in other words. The most dangerous thing in a democracy is when someone seeks to exercise power without being held accountable by the people, the parties, or the parliamentary process “said he.

“Despite not being the president of Congress, you make all the choices. Why is the entire party supporting you now if you are not the Congress president and have not accepted moral responsibility since losing the election? “He added.

“The day you join Congress…the Congress has an inside culture that your life starts and ends with Gandhi(s). Like you get attached to any guru, you just surrender everything to that guru. There is an atmosphere. I don’t know who started this, which will end but this ecosystem is very strong in Congress.” he added.
Sarma also said that a lot of people will come to the BJP from Congress.

The three-day Chintan Shivir, which is due to start today, will be attended by the Cheif Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as well as all other ministers and senior secretaries of various state government agencies.

In August of this year, a cabinet meeting presided over by the CM decided to organise the three-day shivir.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday blamed the Congress for the country’s division in 1947 and termed the Bharat Jodo Yatra by the Congress as a comedy of the century.

The Congress is set to launch the Bharat Jodo Yatra from Kanyakumari at 4 pm on Wednesday. The journey is planned to go through 12 states and is expected to cover 3,750 kms in 150 days.

Himanta Sarma tweeted on Wednesday, “The Bharat Jodo Yatra is a comedy of the century. The Bharat that we live in today is resilient, robust and united. The only time India was divided was in 1947 because Congress agreed for it. Rahul Gandhi ji should go to Pakistan for the Bharat Jodo Yatra if they want unification.”

Reacting to him, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said, “I don’t take the Assam CM seriously, because he has to prove his loyalty every day after having been a part of Congress for 20–25 years. He’s a recent migrant to the BJP, so he has to make outrageous statements every day. “

In a counter attack, Sarma said, “First, tell me who Jairam Ramesh is? Is he someone who lives in Assam? Who is he? I have no idea. Who will remember the name of a Congress leader? I was never very close to any man with such a name when I was in Congress. I don’t even know who he is. “

Before the Bharat Jodo Yatra, former Congress president Rahul Gandhi took part in a prayer meeting at the Rajiv Gandhi memorial in Tamil Nadu’s Sriperumbudur on Wednesday morning.

He said in a tweet later, “I lost my father to the politics of hate and division. I will not lose my beloved country to it too.”

He also added, “Love will conquer hate. Hope will defeat fear. Together, we will overcome. “
