Neeraj Chopra Tops Javelin World Rankings Once More, Arshad Nadeem Falls to Fourth

June 28, 2025, 2:15 am

Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Neeraj Chopra has regained the No. 1 position in the World Rankings, in the latest list that was put out by World Athletics this week. Chopra had slipped out of the top position, which was taken over by Anderson Peters on September 17 last year, after the Grenadian athlete won the Diamond League Final in Brussels.

Neeraj Chopra Leads the Pack Ahead of Peters and Nadeem

Neeraj currently has 1445 points, and Peters has 1431. German superstar Anderson Peters is third with 1407 points, while Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem is fourth with 1370 points.

Strong 2025 Season for Neeraj Chopra Across Global Meets

Neeraj defends his World Championships gold in Tokyo in September. He started his season with an invitational tournament in Potchefstroom, where he won gold with a throw of 84.52m. And then in the season opener of the Diamond League in Doha, he first crossed the 90m mark when he threw 90.23m.

Although breaking the 90m barrier, he had to be content with the runner-up position, beaten by Weber. And then in the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial competition in Chorzow, he was second with 84.14m. He eventually beat Weber at the Paris Diamond League, with a first-round throw of 88.16m. He then earned his third victory of the year at the Ostrava Golden Spike with a 88.16m throw.

Neeraj will next feature at the first-ever Neeraj Chopra Classic, to be held in Bengaluru on July 5.

Breaking the 90m Barrier: A Personal and National Milestone

Once past the 90m mark, he said to RevSportz, “Many people asked questions. Many even used to say that it won’t happen since I’ve been attempting to break 90m since 2018. I used to reach 88-89 several times, but not 90m. So at last, not mine, but the weight is off the Indians’ shoulders.

He is also working presently with javelin great Zelezny, chief coach and appointed last year in that position. Neeraj has disclosed that they started working together in February only.

Arshad Nadeem Responds to Neeraj Chopra: ‘Will Always Stand With Our Army’ | Watch

May 23, 2025, 3:12 pm

The legendary bout between India’s Neeraj Chopra and Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem has long fascinated the athletics community. Things, though, now seem to have taken a very different turn, with the rapport between the two Olympic medalists increasingly strained, driven primarily by growing geopolitical tensions between their nations.

Talking before the Doha Diamond League, Neeraj Chopra spelled out his connection with Arshad Nadeem, saying, “I would like to clear that I don’t have a very special relationship with Nadeem – we were never really close friends. But due to the present scenario, things are not going to be the same. That being said, if one addresses me respectfully, I always respond similarly.”

Neeraj’s comments came after the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, that killed 26 people and rekindled hostilities across the Line of Control. In response, India initiated Operation Sindoor, targeting terror outfits in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir.

Arshad Refuses to Comment, Vows Support to Pakistan Army

Reporters pressed Arshad Nadeem to react to Neeraj’s Thursday comments, and he responded with subdued yet nationalistic remarks. “I would not like to say anything about Neeraj due to the current standoff with India. I belong to a village, and I can say that my family and I will always support our army,” Nadeem said in the media while departing for the Asian Athletics Championships.

Arshad keeps quiet on Neeraj’s remarks.

Pakistan’s Javelin Thrower and Olympic Gold Medalist Arshad Nadeem refused to comment on India’s Neeraj Chopra’s recent remarks.

Social Media Backlash and the Postponed Classic

This changing dynamic is also in the aftermath of backlash against Neeraj Chopra, who himself had earlier invited Nadeem to compete in the now-postponed Neeraj Chopra Classic in Bengaluru. The present atmosphere politicized the event, even though Neeraj Chopra extended the invitation before the Pahalgam terror attack.

To our heroes in uniform – every breath of freedom we take is because of your sacrifices. Your courage under fire, your resolve in darkness, and your love for Pakistan inspire us all. We are forever in your debt. Stay strong, stay blessed. The nation stands with you! ❤️🇵🇰…

— Arshad Nadeem (@ArshadOlympian1) May 10, 2025

Interestingly, Arshad Nadeem surpassed Neeraj Chopra at the Paris Olympics 2024 with an outstanding throw of 92.97 metres, taking home the gold medal. Their off-field rivalry started at the 2018 Asian Games and carried on during the Commonwealth Games.

Another One Vanishes: India Blocks Arshad Nadeem’s Instagram

May 1, 2025, 12:15 pm

Pakistan’s Olympic gold-winning javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem’s Instagram account has been blocked in India owing to a “legal request” in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack. Users attempting to access Nadeem’s Instagram page from India are met with the message: “Account not available in India. This is because we complied with a legal request to restrict this content.” Twenty-six people, mostly tourists, were killed and several injured when terrorists opened fire at a meadow near the popular tourist town of Pahalgam in south Kashmir on April 22. The government has since cracked down on Pakistani social media accounts that have large following in India.

Earlier this week, several Pakistani YouTube channels were also restricted in India for “disseminating provocative and communally sensitive content, false and misleading narratives and misinformation against India, its Army and security agencies”.

Former cricketers Shoaib Akhtar, Basit Ali, and Shahid Afridi were among those whose YouTube accounts were withheld.

Interestingly, while their YouTube content is no longer accessible, their Instagram accounts remain available, unlike Nadeem’s.

The Instagram accounts of current Pakistan cricketers including Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan and Shaheed Afridi are also accessible.

Other prominent Pakistani celebrities, including actors Mahira Khan and Ali Zafar, have also seen their Instagram accounts blocked in India.

Nadeem, who won gold at the Paris Olympics after upstaging Indian superstar Neeraj Chopra, had been invited by the latter to participate in the inaugural NC Classic javelin event scheduled for May 24 in Bengaluru.

However, he declined the invitation, citing prior commitments.

Neeraj Chopra Breaks Silence on Arshad Invite Amid Pahalgam Attack | WATCH

April 25, 2025, 1:05 pm

The Neeraj Chopra Classic Javelin Throw competition will be held on May 24 in Bengaluru and provides Indian athletics enthusiasts with an opportunity to see some of the sport’s biggest stars in action. Though the event will host world-class competitors, Olympic gold medallist Arshad Nadeem has declined the invitation because of pre-existing commitments.

Arshad Nadeem Declines Invitation

Nadeem, in a recent media interaction in Pakistan, confirmed his unavailability, citing preparations for the Asian Athletics Championship, scheduled from May 27 to 31. He explained that he would be travelling to South Korea on May 22 as part of his training schedule, making participation in the Indian event impossible.

The withdrawal was also after the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which had been allegedly claimed by The Resistance Front, a breakaway group of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, as per media reports.

Neeraj Chopra Responds to Controversy

Neeraj Chopra inviting Arshad ahead of the attack had incurred anger. The backlash following the criticism led to the Tokyo Olympics gold medallist going to social media to clear the air and justify his actions. He made it clear that the invitation was extended before the terrorist attack, and the abusive response he received was aimed at his family as well.

He penned, “I am mostly a man of few words, but that doesn’t imply that I will not say anything if I feel something is wrong. Especially so when it is questioning my love for our country, and the respect and honour of my family.”

“There has been so much chatter regarding my choice of inviting Arshad Nadeem to participate in the Neeraj Chopra Classic, and nearly all of it has been abuse and hate. They haven’t even spared my family. The invitation extended to Arshad was from an athlete to an athlete nothing more, nothing less. The objective of the NC Classic was to get the world’s best players to India and to make our nation the venue of world-class sports events. The invitations had been issued to all participants on Monday, two days prior to the terrorist attacks at Pahalgam,” Neeraj said.

“Given everything that has happened in the past 48 hours, Arshad attending the NC Classic was absolutely out of the question. My country and our nation’s interests will always take precedence. To those who are experiencing the loss of their citizens, my thoughts and my prayers are with you.”

World-Class Athletes Set to Participate

In spite of the controversy surrounding the event, the competition will feature top-notch talent. Two-time world champion Anderson Peters, Olympic medallist Julius Yego, and Germany’s Thomas Rohler will participate.

The NC Classic, jointly organised by Neeraj Chopra, JSW Sports, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), and World Athletics (WA), was initially scheduled to be hosted in Panchkula but had to be moved to Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru due to floodlight problems.

Neeraj Chopra Reacts To Arshad Nadeem Receiving A Buffalo: ‘I Was Once Gifted Desi Ghee’

August 18, 2024, 4:28 pm

Indian javelin star and Paris Olympics silver medalist Neeraj Chopra, shared a light-hearted response after hearing that Pakistan’s Olympic gold medalist Arshad Nadeem was gifted a buffalo by his father-in-law. Neeraj recounted his own experience with unusual gifts, saying, “I was once gifted desi ghee. Back home in Haryana, it’s common to receive such gifts—sometimes 10 or even 50 kg of desi ghee, or ladoos,” during a media interaction organized by JSW Sports.

Chopra elaborated that these gifts often come with certain expectations: “‘If Neeraj wins this competition, I’ll give him 50 kg of ghee.’ I’ve heard such things since childhood, especially in regions where sports like circle kabaddi and wrestling are popular. Ghee is believed to boost strength, which is crucial for our sports. In our region, athletes also receive gifts like Bullet motorbikes, tractors, or even buffalos.”

Reflecting on his recent Olympic performance, Chopra admitted that while he was mentally prepared, his physical condition, particularly his legwork, wasn’t optimal. “My legwork on the runway wasn’t good, and no matter how hard you push, it doesn’t work if your technique isn’t right. But I’ve managed my injury well, and it hasn’t worsened,” he noted.

Chopra’s comments followed the news that Arshad Nadeem, who set a record with his 92.97-meter javelin throw at the Paris Olympics, was gifted a buffalo by his father-in-law, Muhammad Nawaz, in recognition of his achievement.

Arshad Nadeem’s Gala Dinner Controversy: Pakistan Government Revokes Invitations To Hockey Legends

August 17, 2024, 7:59 pm

A controversy has arisen in Pakistan’s sports community surrounding a gala dinner hosted by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to honor Olympic javelin champion Arshad Nadeem. Several former hockey Olympians have publicly voiced their frustration, claiming that their invitations to the event were rescinded at the last moment due to “guest management” issues.

Rao Saleem Nazim, a former Olympian and head of the former Pakistan hockey players forum, disclosed that many hockey veterans had received invitations and email confirmations from the Prime Minister’s House. “The PM House had sent invitations to several hockey stalwarts to attend the function and they all got emails confirming their invitations. But at the last moment many of us got a message from the PM secretariat that since they were finding it difficult to adjust the number of guests, the invitations had been withdrawn,” Rao said.

This sudden withdrawal has provoked anger among the affected athletes, who view it as a sign of disrespect toward their contributions to Pakistan’s sports history. Rao criticized the decision, questioning the appropriateness of honoring an Olympic gold medalist while excluding those who have won multiple Olympic medals for the country in hockey. “Is this how you show respect to players who have brought not one but several Olympic medals in hockey for the country?” he added.

He also pointed out the contrast by referencing Pakistan’s last Olympic gold medal, achieved by the national hockey team in 1983, and the bronze medal won in 1992, marking the country’s last Summer Games medal. The incident has sparked a debate about the treatment of former athletes and the perceived hierarchy in Pakistani sports. While Arshad Nadeem’s remarkable achievement is worthy of celebration, the controversy highlights the need for sensitivity and inclusivity in recognizing sporting accomplishments, especially in a nation where hockey’s prominence has waned.

‘5-6 Acre Zameen Dete…’: Arshad Nadeem ‘Mocks’ Father In Law for Buffalo Gift After Gold Win | Watch

August 16, 2024, 10:37 am

Pakistan’s Olympic gold medalist, Arshad Nadeem, recently received a unique and heartfelt gift from his father in law, Muhammad Nawaz, following his record-breaking victory in the javelin throw at the Paris Olympics, where he achieved an impressive distance of 92.97 meters. In a gesture rooted in tradition and cultural values, Nawaz presented Nadeem with a buffalo, a gift considered highly valuable and honorable in their rural community.

In a viral video, Nadeem humorously reflected on the gift while being interviewed alongside his wife by a Pakistani journalist. When asked about the buffalo, Nadeem playfully remarked, “She (his wife) told me, I said buffalo? He should have given me 5-6 acres of land, but buffalo is also fine. By God’s grace, he is so rich and he gave a buffalo.” The light-hearted comment left both the journalist and viewers amused.

Muhammad Nawaz, who lives in a village with his family, including four sons and three daughters, explained that the buffalo gift was deeply symbolic of their community’s traditions and Nadeem’s strong connection to his rural roots. Despite his international success, Arshad Nadeem continues to reside with his parents and brothers in Khanewal, Punjab.

Nadeem’s wife, Ayesha, is Nawaz’s daughter, and the couple has three children—two sons and a daughter. The gift of the buffalo not only celebrates Nadeem’s sporting achievement but also reinforces the importance of cultural heritage and family values in their lives.

Javelin Showdown Between Neeraj Chopra and Arshad Nadeem? Ex Pak Star Bold Proposal for Indo-Pak Sports

August 15, 2024, 5:35 pm

Former Pakistan cricket star Basit Ali has proposed an intriguing alternative to the long-standing absence of bilateral cricket series between India and Pakistan. With political tensions continuing to overshadow cricketing ties, Basit suggests that if the BCCI and PCB can’t agree on a cricket series, they should explore competitions in other sports like hockey, javelin, or kabaddi.

In a recent YouTube interaction, Basit highlighted the global appeal of javelin throwers Neeraj Chopra and Arshad Nadeem, noting that their competitions attract massive television audiences. He proposed that a javelin series between the two athletes would generate even more excitement than the India-Australia cricket series. “When Neeraj and Arshad compete in javelin, the whole world will be in front of the television, and the stadium will be full,” Basit said.

He also suggested holding bilateral series in sports like hockey or kabaddi if cricket remains off the table. Basit emphasized the unmatched allure of an India-Pakistan encounter, arguing that such events would surpass other major series, including the Ashes.

This proposal comes amid ongoing discussions about the possibility of India traveling to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy 2025. The rivalry between the two nations in cricket has been a focal point of global attention, and Basit’s comments underline the deep desire for renewed sporting engagements between the two countries.

A Momentous Victory for Pakistan

The rewards and recognition from the Punjab government celebrate Nadeem’s exceptional talent and dedication, highlighting his contribution to Pakistani sports on the world stage.

Pakistani-American Businessman Faces Backlash For Suzuki Alto Gift To Arshad Nadeem: ‘A Disrespect’

August 12, 2024, 6:24 pm

A Pakistani-American businessman has faced online ridicule after gifting a Suzuki Alto to Pakistani javelin star Arshad Nadeem, who won gold at the Paris Olympics 2024 by defeating India’s Neeraj Chopra. Nadeem’s historic victory marked Pakistan’s first Olympic athletics medal and its first gold since 1984.

Syed Zafar Abbas Jafri announced in a video that businessman Ali Sheikhani would gift Nadeem a “brand new Alto car” upon his return to Pakistan. The Suzuki Alto, priced at ₹23.31 lakh in Pakistani rupees (around ₹7 lakh in Indian rupees), drew criticism from fans who felt it was an inadequate reward for Nadeem’s achievement.

Reactions on social media included:

“Dear Ali Sheikhani, rather than spending money on depreciating assets, why don’t you sponsor Arshad Nadeem’s nutritionist, trainer, or other support staff to help him break the world record in javelin?” asked Karachi resident Taimoor H on X.

“Well-done Ali Sheikhani … please make the Alto convertible. I am 6’1” and my head hits the roof. Hopefully, Nadeem bhai will be able to drive a topless car,” another user joked.

“This is an insult… he deserves a BMW or Audi,” said IT professional Rahul Jain.

Many other users responded with memes.

Reflecting on his Olympic competition against Neeraj Chopra, Nadeem likened it to the historic cricket rivalry between the two nations. He has previously mentioned the difficulties of being a non-cricket athlete in Pakistan, where sports resources are limited. Nadeem expressed on social media, “This gold medal is a gift from me to the entire nation on the occasion of Independence Day (on Aug. 14).”

Olympic Hero Arshad Nadeem Gifted Buffalo By Father-In-Law: The Tradition Behind It

August 12, 2024, 1:37 pm

Pakistan’s Olympic gold medalist Arshad Nadeem recently received a unique and meaningful gift from his father-in-law, Muhammad Nawaz—a buffalo. This traditional gift was given in celebration of Nadeem’s remarkable achievement in the javelin throw event at the Paris Olympics, where he made history with a record-breaking throw of 92.97 meters.

In their rural community, gifting a buffalo is considered a highly valuable and honorable gesture. Nawaz, who lives in a village and is the father of four sons and three daughters, explained that the gift was deeply rooted in their traditions and reflected Nadeem’s strong connection to his rural upbringing. Despite his international success, Nadeem continues to live with his parents and brothers in Khanewal, Punjab, maintaining close ties to his roots.

Nawaz’s daughter, Ayesha, is married to Arshad Nadeem, and the couple has three children—two sons and a daughter. Reflecting on the past, Nawaz recalled how, six years ago, Nadeem was a man of limited means, yet his passion for javelin was unwavering. “Six years ago, when we decided to marry our daughter to Nadeem, he was doing small jobs and running errands but was extremely passionate about his sport,” Nawaz told PTI. “He would constantly practice throwing the javelin at home and in the fields.”

Nawaz expressed immense pride in his son-in-law’s achievements, emphasizing Nadeem’s respectful and humble nature. He also mentioned that two of Nadeem’s children have now started attending the local primary school in the village, while the youngest son is still very young.

This traditional gift from Nadeem’s father-in-law symbolizes the pride and honor felt by his family and village. Muhammad Nawaz’s gesture of gifting a buffalo highlights the deep respect and value embedded in their culture, further illustrating Nadeem’s strong bond with his roots.

Nadeem’s journey from a small village in Punjab to becoming an Olympic champion showcases not only his dedication but also the unwavering support from his community.

Javelin brings to fore rare Indo-Pak camaraderie

August 10, 2024, 4:06 am

In a heart-warming display of sportsmanship and shared humanity, the mother of India’s javelin sensation Neeraj Chopra extended her blessings to Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, who claimed gold at the Paris Olympics. “He is also like our son,” said Saroj Devi, echoing sentiments that transcended borders and celebrated the spirit of the game.

A video of Nadeem’s mother also went viral, spreading warmth across social media. She blessed Neeraj, calling him “like a brother” to her son. “Haar jeet to kismet ki hoti hai, woh bhi mere bête jaisa hai, mai uske liye bhi dua karungi (Victory and defeat are matters of fate, he is also like my son, and I will pray for him too),” she said, her words resonating with a message of unity and mutual respect.

The mutual respect and blessings shared by the families of these two athletes reminder of the power of sports to unite, inspire, and transcend.

“Aaj Arshad ka din tha (Today was Arshad’s day) but Neeraj also gave his best,” Neeraj’s father Satish humbly acknowledged, reflecting on his performance with grace and a determination to improve.

The internet was abuzz with both mothers’ messages, and the videos quickly gained traction, symbolizing a rare moment where sports blurred the lines of rivalry.

The small village of Khandra, nestled 15 kilometers from Panipat, erupted in joy as Neeraj Chopra secured a silver medal with an impressive throw of 89.45 meters. Yet, amidst the celebration, there was also admiration for Nadeem, who set a new Olympic record with a monstrous 92.97-meter throw, a feat that proved unbeatable even for the reigning champion.

In Khandra, where Neeraj’s achievement was celebrated with the same enthusiasm as his gold at the Tokyo Olympics, his mother Saroj Devi expressed her pride, saying, “Silver is also like gold for us.”

The celebrations were nothing short of festive. A giant screen set up outside the Chopra residence drew hundreds of villagers, who cheered for every throw. Firecrackers lit up the night sky, and sweets were distributed as Neeraj’s throw assured him of his second consecutive Olympic medal.

Neeraj’s father summed up the sentiments of the night with a simple yet profound statement: “It was Pakistan’s day, but we are proud of Neeraj’s silver, especially considering the challenges he faced with his injuries.”

As the night wore on, the joy was tinged with concern over the disqualification of wrestler Vinesh, yet the pride in Neeraj’s performance remained unshaken. “Even we are celebrating Neeraj’s win but we are also upset over disqualification of wrestler Vinesh”, added Satish.

Neeraj-Arshad Bond Resembles India-Pakistan Sporting Ties

August 9, 2024, 12:44 pm

In an unforgettable showdown at the Olympic Games in Paris, millions across two nations divided by a fraught border stayed up well past midnight, riveted by a javelin duel for the ages. The men’s javelin gold medal switched hands—and countries—with Pakistan’s unassuming Arshad Nadeem seizing the ultimate prize from India’s celebrated champion, Neeraj Chopra. Nadeem’s victory, marked by a series of powerful throws and a new Games record, was a testament to his skill and determination. Though Chopra was bested, he remained unbeaten in spirit.

As the two great rivals embraced moments after Nadeem’s final 91-meter throw, the sight was moving. They may represent nations with contrasting ideologies and frequent political clashes, but on that field, they were united by a deep bond of competitive spirit and mutual respect. The camaraderie between Nadeem and Chopra was evident, transcending mere professional respect. Their parallel careers have fostered a profound friendship, which, while surprising to some, is a natural extension of the shared experiences in high-stakes sports.

A common misconception about intense sports rivalries is that competitors must harbor some animosity. However, as seen in the iconic tennis rivalry between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, respect and friendship can flourish even among the fiercest competitors. Federer views Nadal as the younger brother he never had, while Nadal considers Federer a great friend, role model, and inspiration.

This transcending of geographical boundaries is also exemplified by the successful tennis partnership of Rohan Bopanna from India and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi from Pakistan. Dubbed the “Indo-Pak Express,” they were one of the most formidable doubles teams on the professional circuit, reaching the US Open final in 2010. Their success was rooted not only in their on-court synergy but also in their off-court friendship.

Cricket, too, has many tales of cross-border friendships, despite the infrequent encounters between Indian and Pakistani players in recent years. Babar Azam, for instance, looks up to Virat Kohli and takes every opportunity to learn from him, although the limited interactions make it challenging to build deep relationships.

Those familiar with India-Pakistan cricket history recall a time when, despite political tensions, the sport served as a bridge for peace and diplomacy. Javed Miandad, for example, was a notorious irritant on the field but a bundle of fun off it, often leaving Indian players in stitches with his antics.

The legendary Virender Sehwag was beloved by Pakistani players for his fearless approach to batting. During his iconic 309 in Multan in 2004, he famously bantered with Shoaib Akhtar, leading to laughter all around, even from Akhtar himself.

Acts of generosity across the border also abound. In 1989, when Mohammad Azharuddin was struggling with form, the great Zaheer Abbas offered him a small tip that revitalized his career. Decades later, Azhar returned the favor by advising Younis Khan, helping him overcome a lean patch in England with a double-century.

And who can forget the friendship between Ravi Shastri and Wasim Akram? They may have headlined the “Shaz & Waz” show on television, but their bond goes far deeper than the screen. As close as brothers, they personify the idea that friendship knows no borders.

Arshad Nadeem’s Memes Flood On Social Media After Gold Medal At Olympics
