AR Rahman On The Moment That Shaped His Musical Identity

December 28, 2024, 3:56 pm

Globally celebrated music maestro AR Rahman recently shared an anecdote that profoundly shaped his artistic identity. In an interview, Rahman reminisced about his early days when he began working as a young teenager to support his family financially. A pivotal moment in his journey came at the age of 19, during a band practice session with a guitarist whose remarks unknowingly set him on the path to self-discovery.

The incident occurred in the mid-1980s when Rahman was actively collaborating with multiple composers and performing in a band. During one session, a guitarist in the group, under the influence of alcohol, questioned Rahman’s style of playing and dismissed it as “just film music.” Although the comment wasn’t malicious, it struck a chord with Rahman, prompting weeks of introspection.

Reflecting on the experience, Rahman admitted, “Initially, I didn’t understand what he meant, but as time passed, his words started to make sense. I realized I was being shaped by the styles of the composers I worked with. That was when I decided to carve out my own unique identity in music.”

Determined to break free from external influences, Rahman embarked on a mental and creative journey that spanned seven years. This period of self-reinvention helped him establish his distinctive musical style, which would later earn him global acclaim. “The guitarist’s comment wasn’t hurtful,” Rahman explained, “but it left a deep impact on me, becoming a positive force that motivated me to evolve beyond those influences.”

Currently, Rahman is set to compose the score for Hansal Mehta’s upcoming series Gandhi. Additionally, he is working on the music for the much-anticipated film RC16, starring Ram Charan and directed by Buchi Babu Sana. Through these ventures, Rahman continues to leave his indelible mark on the world of music.

Check Why: AR Rahman replaced from Suriya’s Upcoming Film

December 11, 2024, 4:59 pm

Oscar-winning music composer AR Rahman has been replaced in Suriya’s highly anticipated action thriller, tentatively titled Suriya 45. The film’s makers have brought on board Sai Abhyankkar, known for his hit single “Aasa Kooda,” as the new music director. The announcement was made via an Instagram post featuring a poster of Sai, stating, “We’re thrilled to welcome Sai Abhyankkar, a rising star in the music industry, to Suriya 45.”

Sai Abhyankkar, the son of popular singers Tippu and Harini, has recently gained recognition with his single “Katchi Sera,” which became the most-streamed Tamil song of 2024. Before taking on Suriya 45, he is set to make his debut as a music director in Raghava Lawrence’s upcoming film, Benz.

The sudden replacement of AR Rahman has ignited speculation and discussions among fans. Following his recent split from his wife Saira Banu, rumors were suggesting that Rahman might take a break from composing. However, these claims were quickly dismissed by his children, AR Ameen and Khatija Rahman. Reports indicate that Rahman’s departure was primarily due to scheduling conflicts.

Last month, AR Rahman publicly announced his divorce from Saira Banu in a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter). He wrote, “We had hoped to reach the grand thirty, but all things, it seems, carry an unseen end. Even the throne of God might tremble at the weight of broken hearts. Yet, in this shattering, we seek meaning, though the pieces may not find their place again. To our friends, thank you for your kindness and for respecting our privacy as we walk through this fragile chapter.”

The couple, who married in 1995, share three children: Khatija, Raheema, and Ameen.

Meanwhile, Suriya 45 will be directed by RJ Balaji and is being produced by SR Prabhu and SR Prakash Babu of Dream Warrior Pictures.

After the legendary musician AR Rahman and his wife of 30 years, Saira Banu, announced separation, it has become a topic of immense shock and curiosity among fans regarding why the decision was made. No details about their separation were mentioned by them, but on The Chill Hour podcast, Vandana Shah-the lawyer to Saira-shared her insights regarding Bollywood marriages.

Discussing common issues in celebrity unions, Vandana said, “Their lives are very different. I don’t think infidelity is the cause of a lot of breakdowns in marriages. What is the cause? One is boredom because you’ve seen it all. They move on from one marriage to another due to boredom, which is peculiar to Bollywood and super-rich families.”

AR Rahman: “A Human Heart is Essential for Creating a Tune, Not Artificial Intelligence”

October 26, 2024, 1:36 pm

Composer AR Rahman acknowledges the utility of Artificial Intelligence (AI) but firmly believes it cannot replace the artistry and creativity of musicians.

In an interview with The Week, the acclaimed Maestro of Madras stated, “AI helps in the mastering process, but creating a tune still requires a human heart and philosophical mind. I believe the future will belong to real musicians going on stage with a guitar and a song. I feel that, with digitisation, we will value the flaws even more—‘Oh, it’s real, see? He is out of tune.’”

Rahman compared AI to Frankenstein, describing it as “trained on collected, stolen knowledge.” He noted, “[AI] is good as a starting tool. I use AI for posters. Sometimes the result surprises you, and sometimes it is very bad, in which case I use a combination of Photoshop and AI.”

In the same interview, Rahman also expressed a desire to work again with director Mani Ratnam. He shared, “I think the more trust you have in someone, the more you torture yourself. Some directors are very clear about what they want, so the projects move faster. But Mani Ratnam will say, ‘Give me something,’ and you wonder and torture yourself to give him something inspiring. Meanwhile, he quietly enjoys it, in a good way, of course.”

Rahman and Ratnam have collaborated on several notable projects over the years, including Roja, Bombay, Yuva, and Guru.

AR Rahman’s Daughter Khatija Reveals Father’s Advice As She Debuts As Composer With ‘Minmini’

July 25, 2024, 1:43 am

Oscar-winner AR Rahman’s daughter, Khatija Rahman, is set to follow in her father’s footsteps. Joining a family tradition that includes her grandfather RK Sekhar, aunts AR Raihana and Ishrath, cousins GV Prakash Kumar and AH Kaashif, and her brother AR Ameen, Khatija will make her debut as a music composer. She recently discussed her work on composing music for Halitha Shameem’s film ‘Minmini’ at a press conference.

Appa called my first song refreshing

At the press conference, Khatija revealed that she played the first song, ‘Iruperum’, for her father. She shared his feedback, saying, “I sent appa (father) the first song and after hearing it, he said it was refreshing and calming. He advised me to find my own sound and assured me that he would always be there for me.”

When asked why her father wasn’t present she said, “It is better if I start slow and prove myself before he speaks about me. Otherwise, I know what will happen on social media and I have no interest in feeding the trolls. I can’t escape criticism or comparison, but I want to be my own person first.”

Imposter syndrome

When Khatija’s debut as a music composer was first announced, she encountered significant trolling online. She shared, “I had self-doubt when I read the comments about my launch as a composer. In fact, I was dealing with imposter syndrome, and I understood that my work has to do the talking.”

Khatija also added that she knows the privilege of having the opportunity, “I have not taken this opportunity for granted, and I’ve worked really hard for this. I hope people give constructive feedback about Minmini instead of choosing to bash me on social media.”

Minmini

‘Minmini’ features Esther Anil, Pravin Kishore, and Gaurav Kaalai in the lead roles. The film was shot and co-produced by Manoj Paramahamsa, with additional backing from R Murali Krishnan. It was filmed in various locations, including Chennai, Ooty, and Ladakh.

A trailer for the film was released on Wednesday and the official synopsis reads, “Minmini is a poignant and powerful drama by Halitha Shameem, exploring the complex emotions of survivor’s guilt with unflinching honesty and heartfelt depth shot over an extraordinary eight-year period. Shot in two phases, 2015 and 2022, this deliberate approach allowed child actors to mature and reprise their roles as adults lending a remarkable continuity to the narrative.”

May 1, 2023, 5:33 pm

Extremely disappointing of #PunePolice to shut down #ARRahman ‘s concert in #Pune at 10.14PM. While the rule of 10pm cutoff is understood, this is nt how a visiting artist of his stature should hav been treated. According to the police official, Rahman then stopped singing. AR Rahman tweeted pictures from the Pune concert on Monday, promising his fans that he’d be back soon.

REVISITING MUSICAL GEMS FROM A.R. RAHMAN

January 7, 2021, 4:34 am

T he Indian musical maestro A.R. Rahman, known for his soulful music and plethora of awards and honours turned 54 years old on Wednesday. The ‘Mozart of Madras’ has been an inspiration to many and his work is a window of his roller coaster journey. From background scores, movie songs to jingles, this immensely talented musician has given us songs that will be remembered by generations to come.

Bollywood, which was widely popular for its pomp and show, especially during the 90s was stumped by the arrival of this quiet and diminutive composer, who worked out of a small and unpretentious studio in Chennai. The multi-faceted, musical talent composed his first music for the Mani Ratnam directorial Roja and since then there has been no looking back for him. In a career spanning almost three decades, the global icon has two Academy Awards, a BAFTA Award, two Grammy Awards, six National Film Awards, a Golden Globe and 15 Filmfare Awards to his credit.

Skilled in Western, classical, and Carnatic music and even Qawwali style, ‘Musical Legend’ is an apt title for this composer who has created music that literally gives people goosebumps. Whether you are looking for a nostalgic trip down memory lane or just want to discover something new, Rahman’s songs are like slow-poison, affecting you more and more, each time you listen to them. As Rahman touched 54 on Wednesday, let us take a look back at some of the musical gems that this ‘Mozart of Madras’ has given us.

Chotti Si Aasha from Roja (1992)

Roja is one of Rahman’s insanely popular and well-received albums to date. He made a thunderous statement and announced himself into the film music world with a total bang. Rahman was clearly carving out his space, but he did not dissociate himself from the melodic tradition. The unique style and sound captured the aspiration of India’s new music audience.

The entire album of Minsaara Kanavu (1997)

Rahman won a National Award for this a l b u m a n d one can’t truly describe how extravagant this album sounds. This album is a music lover’s delight. This whole album has songs varying from classical to romantic ballads this album is truly an enchanting piece of music.

Chaiyya Chaiyya/ Dil Se Re from Dil Se (1998)

These two songs are immensely popular and almost everyone has at least listened to them once. They vary so much in their respective genres. While Chaiyya Chaiyya is a joyous and fun song, on the other hand Dil Se Re is a song by an infatuated lover-boy and is as haunting as is its visuals. Guy Pratt, who is a member of the band, Pink Floyd has played the bass guitar for this song.

Kun Faya Kun from Rockstar (2011)

This song is a fusion of Sufi and pop genre music clubbed with marvellous use of guitar. It stands out because it starts off as a ghazal and transitions into a ghazal/pop kind of fusion with Mohit Chauhan leading the way and a touch of Rahman’s soulful voice in some places.

Aathangare Marame from Kizhakku Cheemaiyile (1993)

A. R. Rahman proved with this song that one can be modern but still produce folk songs by using beautiful strums of guitars and flute. This is an unbelievable folk and pop fusion song that transports the listener t o a n o t h e r world that is beyond words. The flute and strings before the last verse of this song feel like an almost psychedelic experience in a broader sense.

The entire album of Rang De Basanti (2006)

To start off, Khalbali is a mind-blowing song from this album with Arabic lyrics to top it all. This album created massive waves at the time of its release and to date remains immensely popular! The entire album must be given a listen to at least once.

Girlfriend from Boys (2006)

To say the least, this song marked the arrival of the gen-next Rahman in 2004 when other composers were still stuck in composing the stereotypical recycled tunes from their previous compositions. Rahman came up with this brilliant Pop/Rock, fast-paced fusion song. It has brilliant distorted, mute, acoustic guitars paired with amazing synthesisers that make this song a masterpiece. Sung brilliantly by Karthik, this song also possesses great lyrics and is sure to make anyone keep playing it on repeat!

Unusual in more ways than one Rahman has given us albums and melodies that will be etched in everyone’s hearts forever. This Avant Grande musician changed not only how music was conceived, but also its practices. In the true sense of its techno-pop avatar, Rahman has fuelled the idea of a modern India, global in its ambition. Here is to wishing this musical genius a very Happy Birthday and much more successes in the future.
