Curious Case of Missing PM 2.5

Arguably, the world’s most polluted city goes for polls in the next few days. Delhi carries the distinction of having the worst air quality amongst all cities in the world and has constantly been maintaining its number one position over the years. Depending on whether it’s a good day or a bad day, the citizens of Delhi in winters breathe in toxicity commensurate to smoking 10-50 cigarettes. Imagine the toddlers and the kids doing that on a wintry day.
The statistics and data regarding the deaths, heart-attacks, strokes, lung cancer and other pulmonary disease in the capital due to air pollution are firmly in place, published time and again and thus need no second mention. Even the majority of the important international events are now sought to be scheduled in a way so as to escape the Delhi pollution, despite, being the capital. It will be impossible to see the Indian Cricket Team playing any match in Delhi during the winter months.

While the statistics and numbers, as damning as they may be, are not required. A day out in Delhi winters is enough. The cough, the congestion, the headache, the stinging eyes. The subtle advise of the doctors to shift the elderlies to other cities during winters, the online classes for children, the thick dystopian air of gloom, the impossibility of a healthy run or a night stroll, the mental toll of cooped up inside with an air purifier (if you can afford one), the frustrated admonishment of Supreme Court, the gimmicky odd water sprinkler on the roads. The thing about Delhi air, is that in a way it is a great leveler, destroying the health and immunity of the rich and poor alike.

Now the plot thickens (or shall we say the smog thickens), when the city with poison in its air goes for polls.
Amazingly, there is a complete radio silence about the air pollution, the AQI, the PM 2.5 in the run up to the Delhi Elections. There are virtually no barbs, no talks, no debate, no agenda, no manifesto, no brickbats in the run up to the polls regarding the poison in Delhi’s air. As if the air we breathe is not important enough.
In the year 2020, AAP in its “guarantees” had promised for a “pollution free Delhi” and had vowed to “reduce the pollution to a third of current levels”. We all know that the said promise has fallen flat, and, from the toddlers to the elderlies, everyone is smoking packs of proverbial cigarettes every day in the winters. But that is not the shocker. Come 2025, AAP in its typical style has released 15 “guarantees” for the upcoming polls. Air pollution in Delhi is nowhere mentioned in it!

It is safe to say that the incumbent government has given up on improving the air quality in Delhi. The question is not whether a government through policies or concerted effort would be able to improve the air quality, the more worrisome bit is that it does not even feature in the manifesto of the incumbent government. Even false hopes cannot seem to pierce the thick smog.

Kejriwal, once a firebrand politician, had resigned from the position of Chief Minister after being 49 days in power, over Jan Lokpal Bill, seems to be not acknowledging the poison in Delhi’s air and dismissing it curtly as a North India problem or Central Government issue. It will not be misplaced to say that the people of Delhi over numerous elections have given enormous mandates to AAP to fight the status quo and the system but AAP’s fight for clean air has definitely dissipated in smoke.

Now in a scenario where AAP has been in power for about 12 years and is fighting incumbency, it is expected that the opposition parties would corner AAP on the issue of air pollution and provide for their own “guarantees” towards air quality in their manifesto.

Now, here the plot thickens even more.
While the opposition seeks to corner the incumbent government on “Sheesh Mahal”, liquor scam, freebies politics, corruption and other agendas but there appears to be no chatter or seemingly negligible chatter about the poison in the air. No barbs about kids breathing in the proverbial cigarettes. No tall emphatic claims in election rallies seem to be forthcoming regarding resolve to clean up Delhi’s air in case of power changing hands. It appears that the entire political spectrum has given up on Delhi’s air.

Well, it is safe to state that the toxic air is not an agenda in the upcoming elections. The political analysts working across the parties seem to be agreeable on one aspect, there are no gains to be made by making air quality in Delhi as an important focal point of the elections.

Would the toxic air we are breathing, matter in the upcoming elections. Probably not.
In the recent months, there is a Kafkaesque irony staring you in the face, when you flip through the newspaper. Side by side, there are articles which on one hand report real estate deals breaking barriers of Rs. 100 crores for a lavish apartment in Delhi/NCR while another report says that AQI has crossed the 500 mark and severest of GRAP norms have been imposed shutting down schools. The air does not seem to matter when pitted against the juggernaut of progress, growth, economic development, the struggles of daily life, the vanity and lavishness of lifestyle.
Do we collectively care about the air we breathe. Probably not.
We are number one and we shall remain number one.

AQI Improves, GRAP Stage-III Restrictions Lifted Across NCR

The Commission for Air Quality Management’s (CAQM) Sub-Committee on the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) has revoked Stage-III restrictions across the National Capital Region (NCR) with immediate effect. The decision comes as Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) shows significant improvement, recording 278 at 4 PM on Sunday, well below the Stage-III threshold of 350. Delhi’s average AQI has been on a steady decline, attributed to favorable weather conditions, including rains caused by a Western Disturbance on January 11-12. Further forecasts from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predict another Western Disturbance around January 14-15, signaling continued improvement in air quality.

Stage-III measures, including construction bans and industrial restrictions, were implemented on January 9. While these have been lifted, actions under Stages II and I remain in effect. Authorities have been directed to intensify and monitor these measures to prevent a resurgence in pollution levels. Meanwhile, specific closure orders for Construction Demolition (C&D) sites and industrial units will remain in place unless explicitly revoked by the Commission. The CAQM has urged the citizens to adhere to the Citizen Charter under Stages II and I to maintain the current air quality improvement.

The Sub-Committee emphasized its commitment to closely monitoring the air quality and revisiting decisions if necessary. Stakeholders and the public are advised to remain vigilant, especially during the winter season, when adverse meteorological conditions could impact air quality.

Tharoor Criticizes Government’s Inaction

Tharoor, a Member of Parliament from Kerala, took to social media to express his frustration with the government’s handling of the pollution crisis. He lamented that despite his efforts, including organizing an Air Quality Round Table for experts and stakeholders since 2015, little has changed. “This city is essentially uninhabitable from November to January,” Shashi Tharoor stated, adding that the situation remained unbearable for much of the year. He questioned whether Delhi should continue to serve as the nation’s capital under such dire conditions.

With worsening air pollution impacting several northern Indian states, regions in Pakistan have recorded the world’s highest Air Quality Index (AQI) this November. Lahore’s CERP Office area reached a staggering AQI of 1587 on Friday, according to Swiss monitor IQAir, marking it as the most polluted area globally. Additionally, three other areas in Lahore—Syed Maratib Ali Road, Pakistan Engineering Services offices, and VTS—reported AQI levels exceeding 1000.

Lahore’s Rising AQI

Lahore’s average AQI was recorded at 1300 on Thursday, making it the most polluted city worldwide for most of November 2024. Despite government initiatives to curb pollution, air quality has worsened daily, prompting authorities to take drastic measures, including school closures, shutting parks and museums until the week’s end, enforcing mask mandates, and reducing office capacity.

Smog and Health Impacts in Pakistan

As temperatures drop, dense smog has covered numerous cities in Pakistan, significantly reducing visibility. According to Ary News, Lahore alone reported over 15,000 cases of respiratory and viral infections within 24 hours. With Lahore and Multan currently ranked as the world’s most polluted cities, over 70,000 people receive daily medical treatment for smog-related ailments.

To address persistent winter smog, Pakistan has implemented strict new measures, including a three-month ban on weddings and revised transport guidelines. The Punjab government has also shut down educational institutions in heavily affected areas. The primary contributors to this hazardous air quality include vehicle emissions, construction, industrial activities, and crop burning, particularly during the winter wheat-planting season.

CEO Criticizes People for Ignoring Masks as AQI Rises in Delhi-NCR

He recounted, “At 500+ AQI, my kids seemed like the only ones wearing masks to school, and a parent asked me – everything OK with your son? For those who have achieved financial independence, relocating to a place with cleaner air could be the first priority to put family health above familiarity or convenience.” Bajpai responded by acknowledging that N99 masks are effective but stressed that relocating is not feasible for everyone, saying, “Have researched enough on this topic. N99 masks do help. Everyone can’t move. Not a real solution.”

Several commenters echoed Bajpai’s call for mask usage. One noted, “N99 masks are just essential to step out nowadays. I find myself wearing them when cycling now. Too much dust and I can see a clear difference in how well I sleep.” Another user shared their experience with their masked-up seven-year-old, who is “one of the few ones masked up at our condo’s school bus stop.” Meanwhile, a fourth user humorously suggested, “Drop the ego, come to Bangalore.”

Delhi Deploys 200 ‘Anti-Smog Guns’ to Combat Post-Diwali Pollution

In response to escalating air pollution in Delhi, Environment Minister Gopal Rai announced on Friday the deployment of 200 mobile anti-smog guns across the city. This initiative aims to mitigate the severe air quality deterioration observed post-Diwali celebrations.

Minister Rai highlighted that four days prior, Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) had surpassed 350, with expectations of it exceeding 400 following Diwali. Delhi’s Air Quality Set to Deteriorate to ‘Severe’ Levels Before Diwali

As Diwali approaches, air pollution levels in Delhi and its surrounding areas are expected to rise significantly, with stubble burning and firecrackers being primary contributors to the deteriorating air quality. Forecasts indicate that the air quality index (AQI) could reach the ‘severe’ category by October 30, the eve of the festival, due to a combination of emissions from firecrackers, ongoing stubble burning, and unfavorable wind conditions.

Delhi’s air quality has slipped back to the ‘very poor’

Following a brief improvement, Delhi’s air quality has slipped back to the ‘very poor’ category, as calm winds that had temporarily cleared the air began to weaken. Experts predict that the AQI will remain in the ‘very poor’ range until October 29, with worsening conditions anticipated from the use of firecrackers and agricultural burning, which may push pollution levels into the ‘severe’ category by the holiday.

Current meteorological conditions are not conducive to dispersing pollutants, leading to stagnant air that traps harmful particles over the city. On Sunday, the wind speed was reported at 0 km/h, compounding the issue. Predominant surface winds from the southeast are expected to reach speeds of 8 km/h on October 27, gradually increasing to between 6 and 12 km/h by October 30. However, these winds, combined with misty mornings and clear skies, will provide limited relief from pollution levels.

The slow pace and direction of the winds, along with morning mist, hinder effective dispersal of overnight accumulated pollutants. Additionally, maximum mixing depths are forecasted to range from 1500 to 1550 meters over the coming days, limiting the vertical dispersal of pollutants. Concerns are further exacerbated by a predicted drop in the ventilation index—a measure of the atmosphere’s ability to disperse pollutants—which could fall as low as 2800 m²/s by October 30, below the necessary threshold for effective dispersion.

In light of these conditions, officials have urged residents to take precautionary measures, such as limiting outdoor activities and using air purifiers indoors, to mitigate health risks associated with prolonged exposure to poor air quality.

Environmental experts have raised alarms over the dangers of this toxic froth. Bhim Singh Rawat, Associate Coordinator of the South Asia Network on Dams, Rivers & People (SANDRP), pointed out the unusual lack of floods during the 2024 monsoon, a factor contributing to the worsening pollution. Rawat noted that the pollution in the Yamuna is particularly visible during festival times, as the river failed to experience its usual low to medium flood spells.

Air Quality Deteriorates as Winter Approaches

In addition to the Yamuna’s pollution, Delhi’s air quality continues to decline, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) dropping to 226 on Saturday morning, a level classified as ‘Poor’ by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Some of the most affected areas include Akshardham and Anand Vihar, with AQI levels reaching a dangerous ‘Very Poor’ category of 334. The AIIMS area and India Gate are also facing significant pollution with AQI levels above 250, further heightening concerns.

Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai acknowledged the severity of the situation, warning that air quality is expected to worsen with the arrival of winter. Local authorities have been instructed to identify the sources behind the alarming pollution levels, especially in heavily impacted areas like Wazirpur. The CPCB has cautioned that ‘Poor’ AQI can lead to breathing discomfort, while ‘Very Poor’ levels may cause respiratory illnesses, particularly during extended exposure.

Kathmandu’s air ranked as the worst in the world

Kathmandu is currently enveloped in a thin layer of polluted haze, significantly affecting its air quality and earning the city the unfortunate title of having the worst Air Quality Index (AQI) globally. Over the past days, Kathmandu has consistently held the position of the most polluted city in the world. According to IQ Air, a Swiss organization monitoring real-time air quality data worldwide, the particulate matter pollution (PM2.5) levels in Kathmandu were measured at 241 micrograms per cubic meter at 8 am local time, rising to 258 by 10 am as office hours began in the capital. The bowl-shaped valley’s air pollution has worsened due to an increase in forest fires across the country, with over 150 incidents recorded on Monday alone.

PM2.5 refers to solid and liquid particles in the air smaller than 2.5 micrometers in diameter. When PM2.5 levels exceed 300 mg/m3, the air quality is considered hazardous, prompting emergency alerts. Levels between 201 and 300 mg/m3 are categorized as very unhealthy. Residents, such as Bibek Magar, have reported throat irritation and other health issues due to the pollution. The decreased visibility caused operational disruptions at Kathmandu’s airport, with visibility dropping to 2000 meters. The lack of precipitation in the densely populated valley has allowed pollutants to linger in the atmosphere, further deteriorating air quality.

Doctors have warned of short- and long-term health effects, including respiratory issues, cardiovascular problems, and even cancer. Nepal typically experiences high pollution levels during the dry months, particularly from March to May, when forest fires are prevalent. The World Health Organization defines air pollution as the contamination of indoor or outdoor environments by various agents, including household combustion, motor vehicles, industries, and forest fires.

North India’s Deep Freeze: Dense Fog Causes Disruptions in Uttar Pradesh

The icy grip of winter tightened its hold on Uttar Pradesh this Saturday, as Noida, Aligarh, and Ghaziabad were shrouded in dense fog, causing a further drop in mercury levels. Locals were spotted gathering around bonfires on the streets to seek respite from the chilling temperatures.

Simultaneously, the national capital experienced a drop in temperature, with Palam registering a minimum of 14°C, while Safdarjung recorded 12.2°C on Saturday. Residents engaging in cycling or morning walks expressed the severity of the cold, stating that the mercury plummeted significantly in the early hours.

“The extreme cold is making morning strolls more challenging for us. The combination of fog and pollution is exacerbating the difficulties faced by commuters and walkers. We find ourselves stepping outdoors wearing masks to counter health issues arising from pollution,” remarked a local to ANI on Saturday.

According to SAFAR-India (System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research), the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) of Delhi was classified as ‘Very Poor’ at 8:07 am on Saturday. The foggy conditions and heightened pollution levels are posing health concerns for the residents.

In response to the prevailing weather conditions, the national weather forecasting agency has predicted a 2-3 degrees Celsius increase in the minimum temperature across North India in the next three days. As winter intensifies, residents are advised to take necessary precautions to cope with the challenging weather conditions.

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reports that on Tuesday, the general quality of the air in the nation’s capital remained in the “very poor” range. The AQI in the RK Puram area was recorded at 356 in the’very poor’ range at 8 am, while Anand Vihar recorded 365, according to data shared by the CPCB. Furthermore, at 335 on Tuesday morning, the CPCB reports that the AQI at ITO was also recorded in the “Very Poor” range. Images of the famous India Gate on Tuesday showed it covered in a thick layer of fog, severely reducing visibility.

Meanwhile, the AQI in the Ashok Vihar area was also recorded in the ‘very poor’ range at 298 at 8 am on Tuesday, down marginally from 365 the day before.
The air quality in Narela also slipped from ‘poor’ at 300 on Monday, 8 am, to the ‘very poor’ range, at 339, on Tuesday.
Earlier, on Monday, the overall air quality index in the national capital was recorded in the ‘very poor’ category, the CPCB informed.

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reports that at 8 a.m. on Monday, the AQI in the RK Puram-Munirka area was 346, which falls into the “very poor” category, due to the heavy fog that covered the city on Sunday. According to CPCB data, the air quality in Anand Vihar was recorded at 310 at 8 am, whereas ITO recorded 328 at the same time. In a forecast released earlier, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that there was no chance of showers until December 11. It called for clear skies and light to moderate fog throughout the city in the morning.

Images taken from outside the Munirka Metro station revealed a dense fog layer moving over the region, making visibility difficult.

According to CPCB, AQI at ITO was also recorded in the ‘Very Poor’ range at 324 in the morning, at 8 am.
The AQI Dhaula Kuan also hovered in the ‘Very Poor’ category, according to the CPCB.
After a brief spell of respite brought on by rains, the overall AQI in the national capital slipped to ‘Very Poor’ on Friday. The CPCB pegged the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) at Anand Vihar at 374 on Friday morning.
Earlier on Thursday, the overall air quality in the national capital was recorded in the ‘Poor’ range.
SAFAR-India (System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research) recorded the city’s overall AQI at 276 on Thursday morning.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD), earlier, put out a forecast for the national capital, saying there was no likelihood of showers till December 11. It predicted clear skies with shallow to moderate fog in the morning across the city.
The city has been experiencing air quality in the range of ‘severe’ to ‘very poor’ over the last few weeks.
Earlier, on Sunday, the IMD issued a fog alert in isolated areas over five states on December 10 and 11.

An Early Warning System bulletin anticipated a slight improvement in Delhi’s air quality, shifting it to the ‘ very poor’ category from November 27 to 29. However, the forecast for the subsequent six days predicts sustained ‘ very poor’ air quality.

An official from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) suggested that high wind speeds and light rainfall during the day might offer relief to the city. The IMD scientist, Kuldeep Srivastava, mentioned the possibility of rain on Monday, courtesy of a western disturbance that previously brought showers to parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan on Sunday. Srivastava highlighted that increased wind speed, expected to reach around 15 km/hr, aids in the dispersion of pollutants, potentially curbing pollution levels.

In light of the prevailing pollution, Environment Minister Gopal Rai will hold a review meeting with officials from the Environment Department and the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) on Friday. A day after restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) – 4 were lifted in Delhi following improvement in the air quality, Environment Minister Gopal Rai on Sunday urged people to be careful and continue to follow the rules as stages 1, 2, and 3 of GRAP are still in place to tackle air pollution in the national capital.
Gopal Rai said, “Though there has been a constant improvement in air quality, people still need to be aware in order to maintain this improvement.”
“There has been constant improvement in pollution levels over the last two days. The AQI as of today has reached 290. I want to request the people of Delhi and North India to remain vigilant. Although there has been improvement in pollution, we still need to be cautious. As of 7:15 a.m. on Sunday, Delhi’s air quality index was 398, meaning it was classified as “very poor” by the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR-India). Anand Vihar’s AQI was 336 according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board that was recorded at 8 am. Analogously, the AQI was recorded at 363 at Alipur, 363 at ITO, and 371 at Bawana – all of which were classified as “extremely poor.”

Following a slight improvement, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) revoked Stage IV of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) on Saturday.
The decision was prompted by the city’s average Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching 319, as reported by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
Although Stage IV restrictions were lifted, Stages I to III of the GRAP will persist in the entire NCR to prevent AQI levels from worsening to the ‘Severe’ category.
The CAQM, in a release, said that in view of the significant improvement in the average air quality of Delhi-NCR, the Sub-Committee for operationalization of actions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) of the Commission for Air Quality Management in NCR and Adjoining Areas (CAQM) met today to review the current air quality scenario in the region as well as the forecasts for meteorological conditions and air quality index made available by IMD/ IITM and also take an appropriate call on the stringent actions under Stage-IV of GRAP already in place in the entire National Capital Region (NCR) since November 5, 2023.

The strictest enforcement of the firecracker ban could result in Delhi’s finest Diwali day air quality in eight years on Sunday.
Delhi residents awoke to a bright sky and plenty of sunshine, and around seven in the morning, the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) was 202, the highest level in at least three weeks.
An AQI of 0–50 is regarded as “good,” 51–100 as “satisfactory,” 101–200 as “moderate,” 201–300 as “poor,” 301–400 as “very poor,” 401–450 as “severe,” and 450 and above as “severe plus.”
The air quality index for the 24 hours leading up to Diwali on Saturday was 220, the lowest level in eight years.

This time, right before Diwali, Delhi’s air quality significantly improved. This is likely due to Friday’s sporadic rains and wind speeds that promote the dispersal of pollutants.

In context, the AQI on Thursday was 437 during a 24-hour period.
According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board, Delhi had an AQI of 312 on Diwali last year, 382 in 2021, 414 in 2020, 337 in 2019, 281 in 2018, 319 in 2017, and 431 in 2016.

Beginning on October 28, the city had “very poor” to “severe” air quality for two weeks, and the capital was shrouded in a suffocating haze.

Two stations registered “Severe” AQIs, according to data released by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium recorded an AQI of 407 at 10 a.m. today.

At Shadipur, the AQI was at 405. Among areas that had ‘Very Poor’ air quality index were Sonia Vihar at 399, Ashok Vihar at 390, Bawana at 389, Wazirpur at 385, ITO and Jahangirpuri both recorded 381 AQI, Vivek Vihar recorded an AQI of 380.
There was also a dip in the level of pollutants PM 2.5 and PM10 after 4 am across the national capital and surrounding areas.
For today, the Regional Meteorological Centre of the India Met Department has forecast a generally cloudy sky with light rain or thundershowers in the city and over the next two days it has predicted mainly clear skies with shallow fog in the morning.

The weather service has predicted a partly cloudy sky with mist or shallow fog in the mornings for the next two days after Diwali Sunday, and a mostly clear sky with shallow fog in the mornings for the next two days after that.

Delhi AQI: AAP works to enforce Supreme Court air quality rules, holds meeting

AAP Government Under Fire: Delhi LG’s Office Accuses Them of Misleading the Public on Odd-Even Scheme

The Lieutenant Governor’s Office released an official statement on Tuesday, accusing the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi of misleading and deceiving the public regarding the implementation of the odd-even scheme to address the deteriorating air quality in the national capital.

The statement declared that the AAP government’s recently announced odd-even scheme aimed at combatting air pollution post-Diwali was primarily an attempt to divert attention away from the ongoing severe crisis in the capital caused by air pollution. It revealed that the decision to implement the odd-even scheme, as a part of measures under GRAP-IV (Graded Response Action Plan), was not approved by Minister (Environment) Gopal Rai.

Furthermore, the statement clarified that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s office had deferred the decision regarding the odd-even plying of vehicles since the CM was out of town at that time. The released statement also outlined various proposals, including the discontinuation of physical classes up to class XI, conducting lessons online, and operating public, municipal, and private offices at 50% strength.

Although Gopal Rai and the Chief Minister approved all the proposals, they sought expert advice before deciding on the implementation of the odd-even vehicle scheme. Subsequently, the file was sent to the LG Secretariat for approval. The LG Secretariat has raised concerns over this deliberate misrepresentation and conveyed them to the CM Office.

In response, Gopal Rai explained, “The government has decided to implement the Odd-Even Vehicle Scheme, and we have seen some observations in the media regarding that. After studying the Supreme Court’s order, we will create detailed plans and inform everyone. We will incorporate the Supreme Court’s orders into the detailed planning.”

The government had initially made the decision to implement the scheme on November 13 but decided to finalize the details after studying the Supreme Court’s order.

Air emergency: AQI still remains in ‘severe’ zone while the city chokes on smog

A bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Sudhanshu Dhulia made the local State House Officer, under the overall supervision of the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, responsible for preventing crop burning.
It further directed that a meeting be held on Wednesday between the states to ensure that crop burning is stopped forthwith.
Further, the top court noted that smog towers installed as per an earlier order are not working and directed the government to ensure they are repaired.

Anand Vihar recorded an AQI of 440, while Narela registered 388, Punjabi Bagh 434, RK Puram 431, and Shadipur 408—all falling within the ‘severe category zone.’ Similarly, Jahangirpuri recorded an AQI of 416, IGI Airport 404, Pusa Road 337, and Sonia Vihar 407.

The deteriorating air quality has prompted various measures to combat the crisis. Gurgaon Police has restricted the entry of trucks into Delhi-NCR, affecting heavy vehicles, commercial vehicles with BS 3 petrol engines, BS 4 diesel vehicles, LMVs (four-wheelers), and trucks transporting non-essential goods. Diesel-run medium goods vehicles (MGVs) and heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) are also included in the restrictions.

“The general public is hereby informed that due to poor air quality in Delhi-NCR, as per the rules of GRAP, heavy vehicles, commercial vehicles with BS 3 petrol engines, BS 4 diesel vehicles, LMV (four-wheelers), are restricted from entering the Delhi-NCR area,” a Gurgaon Police advisory articulated.

The air quality crisis has persisted for six consecutive days, with the Gurugram-Mahipalpur area enshrouded in a haze of smoke and fog. Concerned citizens have voiced their distress over the situation, highlighting the health risks associated with the ongoing smog.

In response to the escalating pollution levels, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai convened a meeting involving relevant departments to discuss the stringent enforcement of GRAP-4. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) invoked Stage IV of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) throughout the National Capital Region (NCR) to curb further air quality deterioration.

GRAP comprises a series of guidelines and measures designed to combat air pollution in the NCR, encompassing Delhi and its environs. Various factors contribute to elevated winter air pollution, including dust, vehicular emissions, dry-cold weather, crop residue burning, and restricted air movement due to cold air density. These conditions have led to dangerously high AQI levels, particularly hazardous for individuals with respiratory ailments and posing risks, including lung cancer. The situation has drawn widespread public concern, urging authorities to address this pressing issue.

Delhi’s AQI continues to remain in the “severe” category at 488

As per the Central Pollution Control Board, the overall air quality in the National Capital remains in the “severe” category for the fifth consecutive day. The System of Air Quality Forecasting and Research (SAFAR-India) reported that the National Capital’s air quality was 488 today, up from 410 the previous day. In the meantime, in light of the rising pollution, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai has convened a meeting of all relevant departments for today, according to a brief statement from his office.

The statement further informed that the meeting has been called to strictly implement GRAP-4.
This comes after the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) on Sunday decided to invoke Stage IV of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in the entire National Capital Region (NCR) with immediate effect to prevent further deterioration of air quality.The Air Quality Commission said that Stage IV will be implemented in addition to the restrictions placed under Stage I to III.
According to the 8-point action plan, there will be a ban on entry of truck traffic into Delhi (except for trucks carrying essential commodities/ providing essential services and all LNG/ CNG/ electric trucks). Also, a ban will be imposed on the plying of Delhi-registered diesel-operated Medium Goods Vehicles (MGVs) and Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) in Delhi, except those carrying essential commodities/ providing essential services.
