</excerpt>

Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos recently appeared on Nikhil Kamath’s podcast. There, he spoke about the company’s decision to launch its Indian original programming with Sacred Games. He admitted that he wasn’t sure it was the right move.

He said, “Our very first Indian original show was Sacred Games. And I thought, ‘This is going to be great. People in India love movies. This is a TV show that feels as big as a movie, it has movie stars.’”
However, he added, “What I didn’t understand [was] that we were introducing a brand new kind of entertainment in a country the size of India.”

Later, he reflected on the timing and said, “If I did it all over again, would I have done Sacred Games a couple of years later, and did things that were more populist (instead)? Maybe.”
He further added, “We knew that India was going to be a slower journey to get to where we wanted to get to. But it’s a great prize, at the end of the day. The addressable market is growing in the next couple of years in India, so it’s exciting.”

Anurag Kashyap Reacts Strongly

Soon after Ted’s comments surfaced, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap reacted angrily on Threads. He co-directed Sacred Games and took offense to the suggestion that the show may have been a mistake.

He wrote, “He should have started with Saas Bahu .. he would have done well. Which he is doing now Z I always knew the tech guys are dumb when it comes to story telling but tedsarandos is the definition of dumb is what I didn’t know. Good to discover that. This explains everything now.”

Anurag clearly criticized Ted for not understanding storytelling in the Indian context and mocked his hindsight judgment.

Ektaa Kapoor Hits Back, Defends Saas-Bahu Shows

Meanwhile, Ektaa Kapoor, the queen of Indian television drama, didn’t hold back. She responded to Anurag’s remark without naming him but clearly addressed his mockery of saas-bahu serials.

On Instagram, she wrote, “You are so dumb… saying this puts you at an advantage ‘I’m smarter, cooler’ but naaaaaaaa! Darling, how about gracious!!! and self-aware?????? An art that a lot of artists don’t have!”

She then pointed out the cultural value of these shows. “’Saas bahu’ and their impact on Indian masses (how women got a voice in mass India) is well documented by prestigious Chicago research!”

Furthermore, Ektaa called out the elitist tone in Anurag’s post. She said, “But artists who talk of an inclusive world are actually more classist. We must do away with this ‘U can’t sit with us, we’re better’ attitude for democracy and fair play! Love n light to all.”

Netflix Collaborates with Ektaa Kapoor

Interestingly, just days before this online clash, Netflix announced a creative partnership with Ektaa Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms. On Ektaa’s birthday, Netflix posted, “Netflix and Ektaa Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms come together in a creative collaboration to craft compelling stories across formats.”

In response, Ektaa shared her excitement and wrote that this was her “best gift ever.”

This new collaboration comes at a time when the debate around what type of content works best in India continues to evolve.

</excerpt>

Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s intense portrayal of Faisal Khan in Gangs of Wasseypur is one of his most iconic performances. But in a recent chat, the actor shared a funny and revealing behind-the-scenes moment from his first day on set, he was channelling legendary Hollywood actor Al Pacino, and director Anurag Kashyap was not impressed.

‘I Went on the First Day Acting Like Al Pacino’

Speaking about his early days on the Wasseypur set, Nawazuddin said, “I went on the first day acting like Al Pacino. I had thought about emulating him beforehand. Thoda bhootchaaya hua tha. I used to have phases, Robert De Niro for three months, Al Pacino for three months, and Brando.”

He confessed that he tried to bring Pacino’s style into his performance, believing it would make his character look more powerful. However, director Anurag Kashyap immediately sensed the forced effort. “He said, ‘Bewakuf hai kya tu? Don’t do that, you will become stiff and stuck at one place,’” Nawaz recalled.

‘Don’t Do Anything, Be Normal’

The actor said Anurag Kashyap visited him that night and gave him direct feedback. “Anurag came to my room at night and asked what am I up to. He said you are being very stiff, Al Pacino type. I told him that I wanted to show my power,” said Nawazuddin.
Anurag, known for his grounded storytelling, reminded the actor that power doesn’t need to be forced. “Anurag said that vo mera kaam hai, main tere peeche 6 foot ke log khadekardunga, apne aap powerful lagega. Don’t do anything, be normal. I couldn’t sleep the whole night. I felt that he was right,” the actor said honestly.

The next day, Nawazuddin let go of the mimicry and chose to act as himself. “The very next day, I went and forgot everything. Bhaad mein jaaye, main Nawaz hu, main jaisa dikhta hu vaisa hi jaakar karunga.”

Gangs of Wasseypur went on to become a cult classic and was both a critical and commercial success. The film featured a stellar ensemble cast including Manoj Bajpayee, Huma Qureshi, Richa Chadha, Pankaj Tripathi and Jaideep Ahlawat.

Filmmakers Call for Reform in Hindi Film Industry: “It’s About Passion, Not Just Profit”

<excerpt>Anurag Kashyap, Kiran Rao, and Vikramaditya Motwane raise concerns over algorithms, OTT control, and rising marketing costs, urges Hindi film industry to reform and calls for ‘Passion Over Profit’ .
</excerpt>

Veteran filmmakers Kiran Rao, Vikramaditya Motwane, and Anurag Kashyap have expressed concern about the increasing structural problems in the Hindi film industry, which range from poor theater experiences and rising marketing budgets to OTT-driven algorithms and a shortage of enthusiastic producers. They contend that small films are finding it more difficult to thrive as a result of the growing divide between creators and financiers caused by tech ownership.

In order to bring back the creative spirit of the industry, the filmmakers demand more accommodating producers, more equitable promotion tactics, and flexible release models as theaters become more impersonal and streaming becomes more popular.

“Now it’s statistics and algorithm,” says Kashyap

Anurag Kashyap highlighted the loss of passionate producers in today’s film industry. “There was a time when producers were proud of films, now it’s statistics and algorithm,” he said. Kashyap recalled how Rakesh Roshan once mortgaged his house for his 1987 film Khudgarz. He added, “Whenever people have liked my film, there was a good producer empowering me. And whenever my film didn’t work, the same producer was pulling the strings because the money comes from somewhere else.”

Vikramaditya Motwane echoed similar concerns, explaining, “Most of our entertainment is owned by tech companies. There’s a slight broadening of the gap between creative people and people who have the money.” He praised Dinesh Vijan of Maddock Films but added, “Not every producer or studio is like that.”

Filmmakers Demand Fair Play

Kiran Rao pointed out that high marketing costs make it difficult for small films to reach audiences. “There’s so much noise now… only big films can afford [to promote]. Small films that are great just cannot,” she said. Speaking about the struggle of attracting people to cinemas, Rao added, “It takes a lot for someone to find the right show, the right timing. Ticket prices are sometimes prohibitive, and it’s not convenient.”

Vikramaditya Motwane was more blunt in his criticism of cinema halls. “You walk into a theatre that’s sterile. There are 30 minutes of ads, disclaimers, then 15 more during the interval. You exit through the bum of the place.” The group also discussed the impact of streaming.

He criticised the eight-week rule between theatre and OTT releases, saying, “We’ve become used to watching films at home… I don’t think it should be standard.” Kiran Rao added, “Streaming and theatres are not mutually exclusive. You should be able to release a film on both at once.”

In the end, all three agreed that the Hindi film industry needs passionate producers, fair marketing practices, better cinemas, and flexible release models to truly thrive.

Fans and social media users quickly backed the filmmaker, praising the show’s legacy.
</excerpt>

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, co-creator of the popular Netflix India original Sacred Games, has sharply criticised Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos over recent comments made about the show. Kashyap didn’t hold back, expressing his frustration, calling Sarandos “the definition of dumb.”

The 2018 crime thriller series Sacred Games, starring Saif Ali Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, marked Netflix’s first foray into original Indian content. The first season received widespread praise, but the second season failed to meet expectations, leading to the cancellation of a third season.

Kashyap shared a screenshot of a news article quoting Sarandos, wrote online: “I always knew the tech guys are dumb when it comes to storytelling but Ted Sarandos is the definition of dumb is what I didn’t know. Good to discover that. This explains everything now.”

He sarcastically added that Netflix probably should have gone with a “Saas-Bahu” show to begin with. “Which he is doing now,” Kashyap wrote, referencing the streaming platform’s new collaboration with Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms.

What Did Ted Sarandos Say?

Speaking on a podcast, Sarandos expressed doubt over Sacred Games being Netflix India’s first original. “For me, if I did it all over again, would I have done Sacred Games a couple of years later, and did things that were more populist (instead)? Maybe,” Sarandos said.

Yet, at a recent Netflix event titled “Streaming the New India,” Sarandos also acknowledged the show’s importance: “We took our big swing seven years ago with Sacred Games. And I knew that India would be a very important part of our journey. What we found with Sacred Games is that great stories could transcend borders, languages, and cultures, and really talk to the world. Sacred Games proved that.”

Fans Rally Behind Kashyap

Anurag received a lot of support from fans. One user commented, “Sacred Games was a doorway to web series in India. Always a fan.” Another wrote, “Sacred Games was and is the top-class series.. has a special place for years!”
Others criticised Sarandos’ remark, with a user joking: “Imagine not starting with Sacred Games.” Another added, “Let’s grab some chairs and watch Netflix’s downfall in India.”

</excerpt>

Director Anurag Kashyap apologized fervently to the Brahmin people after he came under fire for a comment that he made regarding his next film Phule. The director, whose social media statement had invited criticism, accepted his fault and stated that he lost control of himself while responding angrily.

Apology Amid Threats and FIR

Controversy broke out when Kashyap reacted to a social media commenter about the outrage surrounding Phule, his film on social reformers Jyotiba Phule and Savitribai Phule. In the process of responding, he uttered words that were many perceived as derogatory for the Brahmin section.

The comment had evoked widespread outrage and even threats to his daughter. An FIR against him was lodged at Bajaj Nagar police station in Jaipur on a complaint by resident Anil Chaturvedi. Confirmation of the case being registered was made by Sub-Inspector Ram Kripal, who cited abusive language in the director’s social media post.

Backlash Over Phule and Clarification

The movie Phule, which explores the caste-oriented social reforms of Jyotiba and Savitribai Phule, has been surrounded by controversy regarding its depiction of caste dynamics. Kashyap’s remarks doubting the criticism against the film further stoked tensions.

Coming under heavy criticism and trolling, the director released an earlier apology too, but the latest remark was meant to further clarify his position and restore ties with the offended community.

Kashyap Vows to Reflect and Improve

In his letter, Kashyap stated he would try to manage anger and speak the proper words while sharing his opinions in the future. He further stated, “अब आगे से ऐसा न हो, मैं उस पर काम करूंगा। अपने गुस्से पर काम करूंगा। और मुद्दे की बात अगर करनी हो तो सही शब्दों का इस्तेमाल करूंगे।”

Hoping for forgiveness, he wrapped up with, “आशा है आप मुझे माफ कर देंगे।”

Calling the industry ‘toxic’ and overly profit-driven, Kashyap now seeks creative freedom in the South. He is currently promoting his Malayalam film Footage and working on new Tamil and Malayalam-Hindi projects.
</excerpt>

Bollywood director Anurag Kashyap has revealed that he has shifted his base from Mumbai to Bengaluru. In a chat with The Hindu, Kashyap divulged that the poisonous atmosphere in Bollywood and overemphasis on profits were the reasons behind his shift. He also said that Bollywood has become very ‘toxic’ and has a profit-driven focus.

Why Anurag Kashyap Left Bollywood

Anurag Kashyap, who is well known for directing Gangs of Wasseypur, spoke out about being unhappy with how Bollywood has shifted. In a conversation with The Hindu, he stated, “I’ve left Mumbai. I want to stay away from film people. The industry has become too toxic. Everyone is chasing unrealistic targets, trying to make the next Rs 500- 800 crore film. The creative atmosphere is gone.”

The director also spoke of admiration for the freedom of creativity in the South Indian film world. He has just played an antagonist in Maharaja, which also featured Vijay Sethupathi and received massive praise.

A New Era in Bengaluru

In December, Kashyap provided a hint about his move out of Mumbai and into South India. A source had confirmed his move to The Hindu, saying that he wished to keep himself away from Bollywood.

Kashyap, 52, described his irritations with the Hindi film sector, stating, “a city is not just a structure but also its people. People here… they pull you down.”

New Ventures in the South

Currently settled in Bengaluru, Kashyap is working on new projects. He is marketing the Hindi version of his Malayalam film Footage and is also producing a Tamil film and a Malayalam-Hindi production.

Earlier, Kashyap had informed The Hollywood Reporter India that he was ‘frustrated with the Hindi film industry’ and wanted to venture into South Indian cinema.

His decision represents a big change in his life, as he welcomes the artistic possibilities of the Southern film industry while bidding goodbye to the commercial pressures of Bollywood.

</excerpt>

Anurag Kashyap has once again criticized contemporary Hindi filmmakers, questioning their creativity and risk-taking abilities. In a recent interview, he stated that Bollywood lacks the ingenuity to produce films like the Telugu blockbuster Pushpa: The Rise or its sequel, Pushpa 2: The Rule.

Anurag Kashyap on Bollywood and Pushpa

Kashyap remarked that the Hindi film industry has become risk-averse and overly reliant on formulaic filmmaking. “They don’t understand the essence of filmmaking. They couldn’t create something like Pushpa because it requires the vision of a filmmaker like Sukumar,” he said. Kashyap praised the South Indian film industry for empowering directors and investing in their creativity, contrasting it with Bollywood’s ego-driven attempts to build cinematic universes. “When you create a universe, you think you’re God. But do they even understand how small they are within it?”

Sukumar is the director of Pushpa 2: The Rule, which stars Rashmika Mandanna, Fahadh Faasil, and Allu Arjun. The film has become the highest-grossing Indian film of 2024, earning over ₹1760 crore worldwide. It is now the third-highest-grossing Indian film in history, with expectations of surpassing Baahubali 2: The Conclusion.

Kashyap on Kennedy and Bollywood’s Studio Model

Additionally, Kashyap attacked Bollywood’s constrictive studio model, claiming it inhibits innovation and puts financial success ahead of artistic expression. He bemoaned his picture Kennedy’s difficulty getting a theatrical release in India after it had an enthusiastic 2023 Cannes picture Festival debut.

“I’ve detached myself from Kennedy because I don’t want it to weigh me down like Black Friday did. I refuse to let anything in my life hold me back again,” Kashyap explained.

Kennedy, which stars Rahul Bhat and Sunny Leone, has received praise at several international film festivals but has not yet been distributed in the United States.

Despite the fact that Kashyap hasn’t directed a movie since Kennedy, he has continued to be involved in the business by appearing in prestigious films like Leo, Maharaja, and Viduthalai Part 2.

According to Kashyap, the gap between Bollywood and South Indian cinema emphasises how Bollywood has to empower filmmakers and accept creative risk instead of following a strict studio-driven formula.

</excerpt>

Renowned filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has announced the much-anticipated re-release of his cult classic Gangs of Wasseypur. The acclaimed crime-comedy, featuring stellar performances by Manoj Bajpayee, Huma Qureshi, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, will return to cinemas from August 30 to September 5. Kashyap shared the news via his Instagram account, revealing that tickets for the re-release will be priced at Rs 149.

A Cultural Landmark Returns

Originally released in 2012, Gangs of Wasseypur has achieved iconic status in Indian cinema. Known for its raw and gritty portrayal of the coal mafia in Dhanbad, the film has made an indelible mark with its intense storytelling and memorable dialogues, including the famous lines “Keh ke lenge uski” and “Beta… tumse na ho payega.” The film has not only inspired a plethora of memes but also played a pivotal role in launching the careers of actors such as Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Pankaj Tripathi.

Behind the Scenes: A Glimpse into Filmmaking

In a recent conversation with News18 Showsha, actor Pankaj Tripathi reminisced about the unique atmosphere on set during the filming of Gangs of Wasseypur. Reflecting on the experience, Tripathi described the camaraderie among the cast and the absence of vanity vans, which fostered a more collaborative and informal environment. He noted, “The atmosphere during the shoot was exceptional and is rarely seen today. There were no vanity vans; we used to sit outside on chairs and converse extensively.”

Enduring Impact

Despite the passage of time, Gangs of Wasseypur continues to be a touchstone for intense storytelling in Indian cinema. Its influence is evident in both audience reception and its impact on future filmmakers. The re-release provides a fresh opportunity for new audiences to experience this landmark film and for longtime fans to revisit its powerful narrative and unforgettable characters.

Anurag Kashyap’s announcement of the re-release of Gangs of Wasseypur has generated excitement among cinema enthusiasts. As the film makes its return to theatres, it promises to evoke nostalgia and celebrate its enduring legacy in Indian cinema.

</excerpt>

Anurag Kashyap, the acclaimed filmmaker, is currently busy promoting his latest film, “Bad Cop.” In a candid interview with YouTuber Janice Sequeira, Kashyap opened up about his long-standing conflict with actor Abhay Deol, stemming from their collaboration on the film “Dev D.”

Reflecting on their strained relationship, Kashyap revealed, “Abhay, I have not met him since the shooting of ‘Dev D.’ He didn’t even come for promotions and he has never spoken to me since. If he wants to call me toxic, it’s his side of the story.” He hinted at deeper issues, adding, “The truth can’t be spoken, because if I will speak the truth, he won’t be able to show his face. There is too much truth in there that Abhay will also not have the courage to talk about. And I will not talk about it because it will make him look like s**t.”

Kashyap also addressed the labels of being “problematic and toxic” that have been associated with him. “I can’t always make people happy. I avoid working with people who I think are problematic, and the ones who think I am problematic are the ones with whom I have never worked. That’s why they categorize me as a problematic person,” he explained.

For those unfamiliar with the backstory, Anurag Kashyap and Abhay Deol collaborated on the film “Dev D,” which received widespread acclaim upon its release. However, the relationship between the actor and the filmmaker soured when Deol criticized the film for allegedly glorifying “toxic masculinity.” This disagreement has kept the two artists at odds ever since.

Directed by Vinod Kamble and presented by renowned filmmakers Anurag Kashyap and Nagraj Popatrao Manjule, ‘Kastoori’ plunges into a compelling tale that underscores the profound role children play in rekindling wonder and marvel in our lives.

The film’s narrative revolves around a 14-year-old boy working as a manual scavenger, grappling with societal biases and ridicule due to his body’s distinctive odor. ‘Kastoori’ intricately portrays his journey as he navigates education, societal prejudices, and self-discovery, all while encountering the elusive aroma of Kastoori.

Anurag Kashyap commented on the teaser, saying, “Kastoori is a film of utmost importance in today’s context.” It’s a story that only a few filmmakers can masterfully convey. Vinod has created a moving film based on a heartbreaking story. That’s what brought Nagraj and me together to present it to the world. We are confident that the audience will enthusiastically embrace the film.”

</excerpt>

In a recent conversation, Anurag Kashyap’s darling daughter Aaliyah Kashyap revealed how comments about her weight gain affected her mental health. While speaking on the podcast, the star kid said, “I used to eat a lot and I always wanted to put on weight cos I was scary skinny. No matter how much I ate, I couldn’t put on weight. And my mom used to be like that when she was younger too.” However, Aaliyah mentioned that when she began taking antidepressants two years ago, she started gaining weight. “I think I’ve put on about 12 or 13 kgs in the last year and a half. Which is a lot for me. It’s a huge change from what I’ve been used to my whole life.”

Aaliyah continued, “But then it kept going, and then I was like ‘okay, that’s enough. You can stop now.’ But it just never stopped. I started having a really unhealthy relationship with food, which affected my mental health. People started commenting about my weight which affected my mental health.”

The star kid also recalled, “A couple of weeks ago, I got a massage lady to come and give me a massage at home. This is the lady I used to call about a year ago. She asked me to change and when I came out, she said, ‘You’ve become so fat since I last saw you’. And I remember I went on the massage table, put my face between the hole, and started crying.”

She added that she is in a much better place now. “When I first gained weight, and comments started coming in, it felt like an end. Now I’m in the mindset that if I’m not happy about it, I’m gonna change it in a healthy way. Obviously, I’m still insecure, but I’m in a healthier mindset about it.”

The filmmaker also opened up on the fear of losing his loved ones the most. “I’m very scared of losing loved ones. I’ve realized after a long time in the sense that… In my process of pursuing this… One film after another, that so-called passion with which I actually enjoy making movies, I left a lot of things behind. I ignored a lot of things. Because when it really hit me hard… When my health slipped from my hand… It was so fast. Because I was working, I was doing yoga, I was swimming… I felt invincible. When it slipped out of my hands… It was like no amount of anything can save you. At that time you feel isolated, you feel alone. And then I realized I have isolated myself, in my pursuit for whatever I was doing. Constantly fighting to make my films my own way, everything.”

Further, he continued, “But there comes a point where I realize my daughter has suddenly grown up. I see her old pictures and I’m like, ‘Oh my god, I miss this.’ I’m sitting with Aarti and Aaliyah’s friend Ida and Ida’s mom Preeti, and Imtiaz… And they’re all talking, and they have these memories of this holiday and this and that. And I’m sitting there and I’m wondering, ‘Where was I?’ And I realize Imtiaz has spent more time with my daughter than I have. And then it eats you up inside. You don’t even know whether to apologize, because it’s too late to apologize. My daughter is all grown up. She has forgiven me for explaining that I made low budget films. I had to do twice the amount of work. Or three times the amount of work. And she understood, but still, you know me. She came out and talked to me. Why were you always working so much? And I would try to, one could have made time.”

Anurag admitted that it was because of his rebellious attitude towards the powers , his daughter had to face the consequences. He revealed, “People start attacking her, trolling her. She’s a social media kid. She gets affected by trolling. She started getting anxiety.”

In a conversation with Puja Talwar, the actress said, “It takes time. There is no denying that in the first few years after our divorce, we couldn’t be the kind of friends that we are today. We needed that separate time because it hurts to know about the other person’s relationship and things like that.”

Kalki said that she and Anurag took that time separately. She also mentioned that she took a lot of therapy, and now seven to eight years later, they are doing great and they get along well as friends.

In September 2019, the actress announced her pregnancy with her boyfriend, Guy Hershberg. Guy is an Israeli musician. On February 7, 2020, Kalki gave birth to their daughter via water birth. Meanwhile, on the professional front, Kalki will be seen in Goldfish as well as a movie titled Emma and Angel. Anurag’s directorial venture Kennedy was screened at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. He will be seen acting alongside Nawazuddin Siddiqui in Haddi.

Recently, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, on May 8, banned the screening of the film in the state. Amid the controversy, Anurag Kashyap shared a cryptic post on Tuesday as he shared his thoughts on the ban.

The directed tweeted, “You agree with the film or not, be it propaganda, counter propaganda, offensive or not, to ban it is just wrong.” He added, “You want to fight propaganda. Then go in numbers and see the film that talks against misuse of social media and how inherent prejudice is weaponised to create hatred and unrest. It’s running in cinemas and is called Afwaah. Go make your voice stronger. Go make a point. That’s the right way to fight.” The director shared his tweets with a quote that read: “I do not agree with what you have to say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it.”

Here’s what Anurag Kashyap tweeted

Earlier, veteran actress Shabana Azmi slammed people and stood in support of the Adah Sharma starrer The Kerala Story. Shabana Azmi took to her official Twitter handle and wrote, “Those who speak of banning #The Kerala Story are as wrong as those who wanted to ban Aamir Khan’s #Laal Singh Chaadha. Once a film has been passed by the Central Board of Film Certification nobody has the right to become an extra-constitutional authority.”

Anurag Kashyap’s much awaited movie Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat that is touted to be his ode to modern love, launched their trailer in Mumbai today. The trailer was launched in a massive event attended by the entire star cast—Alaya F, debutant Karan Mehta, Anurag himself along with the music director Amit Trivedi.

The trailer, which is Gen Z’s take on modern love, looks quite interesting and is an amalgamation of all elements ranging from drama, romance, pain and fun. The trailer launch was followed by a fun interaction with the star cast, Anurag, music director Amit Trivedi and Producers – Ranjan Singh, Kabir Ahuja & Shariq Patel.

Anurag at the trailer launch opened up on the film, saying “It was my daughter who kept making me realise how my generation of people think that we know everything and it is our world, whereas in reality, they are the natives and we are the immigrants. This was the core thought I have tried to explore in Almost Pyaar though my Gen Z protagonists. He spoke of his association with music director Amit Trivedi, “Amit is a great supporter of what I do and our bond is very organic and free flowing.”

Alaya F said,”This was supposed to be my debut film. I was auditioning for couple of films but wasn’t getting anything and started having serious doubts on myself, but then i met Anurag Sir and after watching my reel he instantly signed me for the film .So I’m immensely grateful to him for having that faith in me.”

Debutant Karan Mehta said “It is a dream come true to work with Anurag Sir. I used to make short films and his daughter Aaliyah showed it to Anurag sir and i received a message from him to work on this film.”

Music director Amit Trivedi said,”My bond with Anurag is so organic and I have absolute freedom while working with him. He lets everyone be the way they are and that is the joy of working with him.”

Presented by Zee Studios under the Good Bad Films production is slated to release on 3rd February 2023.

Dobaaraa, which is being directed by Anurag Kashyap, written by Nihit Bhave, and produced by Ekta Kapoor, will reportedly feature Taapsee Pannu. The next thriller’s trailer, which debuted on Wednesday, features Taapsee tackling a 26-year-old mystery. The suspenseful movie, which will be released on August 19, also features Rahul Bhat and Pavail Gulati.

Dobaaraa centres on a mother who strives to save the life of a youngster who was unintentionally involved in a murder that took place twenty years earlier. The main plot of the movie is how a bizarre television set helps a girl and a boy get to know one another.

Taapsee, her husband, and their daughter are shown moving into a new house in the Dobaaraa trailer. The family soon learns that a small kid was killed during a thunderstorm in the home adjacent to theirs 26 years ago. Then, we see Taapsee’s character speaking with the same young boy. While the trailer does indicate that Dobaaraa relates the tale of how Taapsee’s character modifies the past during a thunderstorm, which therefore affects her present as well, it also teases the exciting possibilities of time travel.

Moving into a new house is shown in the Dobaaraa trailer with Taapsee, her husband, and their daughter. The family soon learns that a small kid was killed during a rainstorm in the home adjacent to theirs 26 years prior. Then, we see Taapsee’s character speaking with the same young boy.
Dobaaraa is a Hindi adaptation of the Spanish thriller Mirage, which was released in 2018.

Dobaaraa is the second project of Anurag and Taapsee together after Mannmarziyan.In addition, Saswata Chatterjee will also be sharing the screen in the film. Prior to its release in India, Dobaaraa will have its Australian premiere on August 12 at the Melbourne Indian Film Festival.

Recently, Taapsee was spotted in Shabaash Mithu. The sports biopic was made by Viacom18 Studios under the direction of Srijit Mukherji. Taapsee plays the title role in the movie, which is based on the life of Mithali Raj, a former Test and ODI captain of the Indian women’s national cricket team.
Academy Award-winning British filmmaker Danny Boyle feels Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor has added a sense of truthfulness in the new release ‘AK Vs AK’, and says the film breaks myths around celebrity persona. The Vikramaditya Motwane-directed ‘AK Vs AK’ casts the actor as filmstar Anil Kapoor whose daughter, actress Sonam Kapoor (played by Sonam Kapoor), is kidnapped by a director named Anurag Kashyap (essayed by Anurag Kashyap). Anil has to hunt his daughter within a night without informing the cops if he wants her safe, and the deal is Anurag will be filming the entire process to create his new film. “I was absolutely astonished by ‘AK Vs AK’! It’s an extraordinary film with a great start and an even better ending. One of the most insightful things about the film is how it deals with people’s egos and their larger-than-life personas breaking the myths around ‘celebrities’ Anil and Anurag,” said Boyle.

He continued: “It is so evident in the first scene when Anil says he is a shameless actor. There is a degree of that visible in the way he has approached this film. What’s incredible is that not only does Anil Kapoor walk the plank, but the length that he walked — it seemed that he was ending his career and simultaneously giving birth to a new one, which is an extraordinary juggling act.”

“There’s truthfulness and satire to what he has prepared to say about himself and do on-screen. ‘AK Vs AK’ is truly an exhilarating film and an exciting one too,” added the filmmaker, who casted Anil Kapoor in his film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, which won eight Oscars in 2009. Boyle shared his views when he joined Anil Kapoor, Anurag Kashyap and director Motwane for a virtual conversation.

The trailer of ‘AK vs AK’ is out now, and while the audience is loving the style of Anil Kapoor, his co-star Anurag Kashyap, a popular director, is getting lauded for his acting skills too. ‘AK vs AK’ is not Anurag’s first film as an actor, and he certainly is not the first Bollywood director to come in front of the camera.

Here’s a list of present day directors who took on the challenge of being an actor for their own films or others’:

ANURAG KASHYAP

He will be seen as a filmmaker who kidnaps the daughter of a filmstar in Vikramaditya Motwane’s upcoming film ‘AK vs AK’. He had also appeared as a cop in ‘Ghoomketu’ directed by Pushpendra Nath Misra. Before this, he had acted as a corrupt police officer, ACP Rane, in ‘Akira’, directed by AR Murugadoss. His role of gangster Bunty Bhaiya in ‘Shagird’, helmed by Tigmanshu Dhulia, also garnered him a lot of appreciation. Size of roles doesn’t seem to matter to him as in Zoya Akhtar’s directorial ‘Luck By Chance’, he played a writer for a brief moment.

TIGMANSHU DHULIA

As far as acting goes, he is best known for playing politician Ramadhir Singh in Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Gangs Of Wasseypur’. He also featured in the much-publicised film ‘Zero’, directed by Aanand L. Rai, as Shah Rukh Khan’s father. Another memorable role was essaying lawyer Maqbool Memon in ‘Shahid’, directed by Hansal Mehta. He also appeared in Honey Trehan’s ‘Raat Akeli Hai’ as SSP Lalji Shukla.

KARAN JOHAR

Before his directorial debut with the romantic comedy-drama ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ in 1998, Karan did a cameo as Shah Rukh Khan’s friend in the 1995 blockbuster ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’. Years later, he played a prominent role as a wealthy businessman in Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Bombay Velvet’. He also made special appearances in Bollywood songs ‘Chandigarh mein’ and ‘Aankh maarey’.

PRAKASH JHA

With Priyanka Chopra in the lead role, Jha cast himself in a pivotal role of his directorial ‘Jai Gangaajal’, as DSP Bhola Nath Singh. Last year, he went on to act in ‘Saand Ki Aankh’ starring Taapsee Pannu and Bhumi Pednekar and directed by Tushar Hiranandani. Jha featured as village sarpanch Rattan Singh Tomar in the film.

SUBHASH GHAI

MUMBAI: Mahie Gill is content with her decade-long journey in the Hindi film industry and says she prefers to do less but good work. “A lot of people tell me I do very little work, ‘dikhte nahi ho’ (you are not visible enough). I am a very satisfied person, very content in my life. I prefer to do less work but good work. But it has been very nice,” Mahie told IANS. She made her debut in Bollywood in 2003 with ‘Hawayein’ but became a familiar face after playing a new-age Paro in Anurag Kashyap’s 2009 release, ‘Dev.D’. Her notable Bollywood roles have been in ‘Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster’, ‘Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster Returns’ and ‘Gulaal’.

Mahie thanks Bollywood for accepting her. “I am thankful to the film industry for accepting me and giving me respect, which I had not thought in my wildest dream. I thought I would shift to Mumbai and this will happen. So, it has been great. I have worked with interesting people, great directors and scripts. So, I am very content. I will keep working,” she said. The actress will next be seen in ‘Durgamati’, where she plays a CBI officer Satakshi Ganguly. Talking about her role, Mahie said: “She is a tough person and full of authority and interrogates Durgamati and how there is a give and take relationship. Both these people are very strong.” What prompted her to take up the film? “I loved the script and the character I am portraying in it as it is very different from what I have been doing so far,” she replied.
