Albanese will discuss the deal at the G7 summit in Canada.
</excerpt>

EU defence pact talks are set to begin as Australia takes a significant step toward boosting its global security ties through formal negotiations with the European Union. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, upon arriving in Calgary for the G7 summit, confirmed that his government will explore a strategic defence partnership with the EU.

This proposed agreement aims to deepen collaboration in areas such as cybersecurity, foreign interference, counter-terrorism, and defence technology, reflecting Australia’s growing urgency to respond to evolving international threats.

Australia Eyes EU Pact

Australia will enter formal talks to join the proposed EU defence pact, which may include joint military drills, cybersecurity coordination, counter-terrorism efforts, and cooperation across defence industries. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will present Australia’s interest in advancing the deal during meetings with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa at the G7 summit in Alberta, Canada.

The proposal gained momentum after Pope Leo XIV’s inauguration mass in Rome introduced the idea, and Defence Minister Richard Marles reinforced Australia’s position in later talks with EU officials. EU ambassador Gabriele Visentin confirmed that negotiations have already started in Brussels. Although Australia initially showed little enthusiasm, it has since adjusted its stance in response to growing global security threats.

Von der Leyen emphasised that Australia and the EU share democratic values, calling the potential pact “predictable” and beneficial for both parties. The agreement would follow a model already used in EU defence deals with the UK, Japan, and South Korea.

Albanese Pushes Defence Deal

After landing in Calgary, Albanese expressed a readiness to cooperate, stating that Australia would explore the agreement constructively to bolster its defence posture. He also appointed Defence Minister Richard Marles and Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong to lead further negotiations alongside European counterparts.

The timing aligns with increasing global instability and rising pressure from the United States, particularly former President Donald Trump, for allies to boost defence spending. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte warned non-compliant nations to “learn to speak Russian,” signalling the urgency of solid defence frameworks.

Australia’s entry into the EU defence pact would represent a strategic shift, positioning the country alongside major global players and enhancing its readiness for emerging threats, especially in technology and foreign influence operations.

</excerpt>

Australian PM Anthony Albanese will sit down with US President Donald Trump on the margins of the G7 summit in Canada. It’s their first face-to-face meeting since Trump returned to office. The leaders will discuss the AUKUS defense agreement, escalating trade tariffs, and US calls for increased Australian defense expenditure.

PM Anthony Albanese said the meeting will occur on Tuesday, half-way through the summit.

First Face-to-Face Amid Pressures

PM Anthony Albanese had recently indicated that he was looking forward to a one-on-one meeting with Trump, but he did not provide a timeline. On Saturday, he confirmed the meeting when speaking in Seattle. “We do have a meeting scheduled,” he said. “Clearly, there are problems that the US President is currently facing, but I would hope that we will be able to have a constructive engagement.”

The meeting is at a stressful moment. Washington has just initiated review of the AUKUS agreement. The trilateral agreement signed in 2021 between the US, the UK, and Australia is meant to enhance Indo-Pacific security. It consists of a historic deal for Australia to have nuclear-powered submarines.

AUKUS and Defense Costs Under Review

America has asked Australia to increase its defense budget from 2% to 3.5% of GDP. Albanese confirmed that this issue will be raised in his meeting with Trump. “We’ll increase tariffs, we’ll increase the priority of AUKUS, and we’ll have a conversation as two friends ought,” he added.

Australia has already committed A$368 billion over three decades to the AUKUS submarine agreement. Yet, the Pentagon’s review has injected fresh uncertainty about its future. Canberra restated its commitment, saying it will cooperate very closely with the US during the review.

Strong Alliance Amid Regional Tensions

Anthony Albanese also pointed to previous positive interactions with Trump. “I look forward to building on the very constructive phone conversations that we’ve had,” he said. The two leaders have spoken three times since Trump’s re-election.

On Saturday, in the lead-up to the summit, Australia welcomed a significant U.S. warship to Sydney Harbour. It will join Talisman Sabre, the biggest biennial joint US-Australia military exercise, featuring more than 30,000 troops from 19 nations.

As tensions rise globally, particularly with China’s assertive behavior in the Indo-Pacific, the Albanese-Trump summit may also determine the direction of the future of U.S.-Australia security collaboration.

A possible minority government looms as crossbench negotiations may become crucial.
</excerpt>

Anthony Albanese is set to continue as Australia’s Prime Minister, after the Labor Party trounced the governing Liberal-National coalition in the federal election. National broadcaster ABC News estimated that the ruling Liberal-National coalition has lost, with even Opposition Leader Peter Dutton losing his Brisbane seat of Dickson to Labor’s Ali France.

With Labor’s performance, Albanese is set to remain as Prime Minister and will construct a new cabinet using elected Labor MPs. He has before declared that, in the event of his re-election, one of his initial overseas trips would be to Washington to take an audience with previous US President Donald Trump.

While pre-election surveys had also revealed the likelihood of a minority government, preliminary results now indicate Labor might achieve a majority. Nevertheless, if Labor is short of a clear majority, Albanese has excluded the possibility of formal arrangements with the Greens or independents to create a government.

Rather, he can turn to crossbenchers on “confidence and supply” deals, guaranteeing their support on essential votes like the national budget or motions of no confidence. These deals are usually not about negotiating on policy issues.

The ultimate election result will decide if Albanese can form a majority government or have to depend on parliamentary support to continue leading.

Vote Count Begins After Polls Close

<excerpt>Australians voted amid economic worries and global tensions, with early polls favoring Prime Minister Albanese.
</excerpt>

Voting has ended across most parts of Australia. Polling stations in the eastern states closed at 6 p.m. AET (1:30 p.m. IST). Now, the focus shifts to the results. The Australian Electoral Commission will soon begin counting and show updates in real time.

Key Election Issues

This year, voters paid close attention to the rising cost of living, climate change concerns, and U.S. politics—especially former President Donald Trump’s trade tariffs. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese strongly opposed Trump’s trade policies. Meanwhile, opposition leader Peter Dutton supported Trump, which drew heavy criticism.

Leaders to Address Supporters

Later today, both Albanese and Dutton will speak to their supporters. Albanese will be in Sydney, and Dutton will address his party in Brisbane while the votes are counted.

Polls Favored Labour

Most opinion polls suggested that Albanese’s centre-left Labour Party would likely win a second term. Speaking to Channel Seven, Albanese said, “The holy grail is back-to-back wins that we’re aiming for today.” He also added, “I’ll leave nothing on the field over the next three years if I’m re-elected as Australia’s prime minister.”

Dutton’s Trump Praise Hurts Campaign

Some surveys showed that Dutton lost voter support due to his praise for Donald Trump. Earlier this year, he had called Trump a “big thinker” with “gravitas” on the global stage. Labour used this against him, calling him “DOGE-y Dutton” and accusing his party of copying Trump’s political style.

China Also a Key Issue

Relations with China were another major topic. Albanese claimed that his government had improved ties with Beijing. As a result, China removed many trade restrictions that had hurt Australian exporters. Labour said those barriers had cost the economy 20 billion Australian dollars ($13 billion) each year since they came to power in 2022.

Living Costs a Common Concern

Both parties agreed that Australians are facing a cost-of-living crisis. Foodbank Australia, a major food aid group, revealed that 3.4 million households experienced food insecurity last year in a country of 27 million people.

How the Election Works

The Australian House of Representatives has 150 members. Each member represents one region and serves for three years. To form a majority government, a party or coalition must win at least 76 seats.

</excerpt>

Australia goes to the polls today in what has turned out to be one of the most heated and closely observed elections in recent memory. The race between Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has been watched nationally and internationally, with key issues such as housing affordability, the inflationary cost of living, and climate policy dominating the agenda.

More than half of the voters have cast their ballots already, and hopes are high as millions of Aussies troop to the polling centers to cast their votes. Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs has enabled a record number of 111 voting sites in 83 countries, ranging from Japan to Bali, as well as Europe’s major cities, to aid those abroad voting.

Major Issues and Party Promises for Australia Polls

The Labor Party, under the leadership of Anthony Albanese, has campaigned on policies of affordable housing, enhanced Medicare funding, and a very strong emphasis on renewable energy. Peter Dutton’s coalition, on the other hand, has focused on economic relief in the form of fuel excise reductions, tax incentives, and a contentious long-term nuclear energy policy.

Both the major parties have also committed to reducing prescription medicine prices and limiting foreign home ownership—steps to alleviate household budgetary pressures.

Minor parties, especially the Greens, have given the campaign an added boost with their militant climate policies and renters’ rights campaigning. Their increasing popularity has seen them become a major factor in deciding the result in marginal seats.

When to Expect Results

A result might be called as early as 7:30 PM AEST, says ABC’s long-time election expert Antony Green. Yet, if the race remains close, vote counting could continue late into the evening. This is Green’s last on ABC’s election reporting, so it’s a historic night for Australian political observers.

Full Media Coverage

Major TV networks are providing wall-to-wall coverage of the election returns:

ABC commences at 5:30 PM AEST with David Speers and Sarah Ferguson, along with Antony Green.

7NEWS commences at 4 PM with Michael Usher and Natalie Barr, and includes political editor Mark Riley.

Nine Network starts coverage at 5 PM, with Ally Langdon and Peter Overton presenting.

Sky News Australia provides all-day updates, with Kieran Gilbert hosting the evening panel at 5 PM.

Network 10 starts at 6 PM with Sandra Sully, Hugh Riminton, and Ashleigh Raper.

SBS and NITV broadcast live at 6:30 PM with Janice Petersen and Anna Henderson, with Indigenous coverage.

As Australia votes today, the result will determine the tone of the country’s economic recovery, climate agenda, and healthcare future in an increasingly changing global landscape.

Election Day in Australia: The Key Battlegrounds & What’s Driving Voters

<excerpt>Australians are heading to the polls today for the 2025 federal election, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese seeking a second term. Voters are driven by inflation, housing woes, and healthcare concerns, while global events and long holidays led to a quiet campaign season.
</excerpt>

This is a voting day for Australia for the 2025 federal election following a campaign dominated by delays and global distractions. Originally due on April 12, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese delayed the vote because of a cyclone that disrupted government plans.

This year’s campaign season struggled to get noticed. International headlines, such as US President Donald Trump’s wide-ranging tariff declarations and the passing of Pope Francis, took center stage. Easter holidays and long weekends also gave little space for election momentum.

“It has been difficult to break through… but the two major parties have lost the confidence of the voters, which has magnified their issues of communications,” according to John Warhurst, Emeritus Professor at the Australian National University’s School of Politics, quoted by the BBC. “The government has been cowardly and the opposition has been chaotic.”

The Leaders in the Race

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, representing the center-left Australian Labor Party (ALP), seeks re-election after first gaining office in 2022. A seasoned lawmaker with nearly 30 years in Parliament, Albanese now faces backlash over his response to hot-button topics such as housing, Indigenous affairs, and religious tensions.

Standing against him is Peter Dutton, head of the conservative Liberal-National Coalition. A former home affairs and defence minister, Dutton is running for his first election as opposition leader. Although his political experience is a plus, his tough stances on immigration and social policy have made him a divisive character.

Key Issues Shaping the Vote for Australia

Cost of Living Crisis

Inflation is a major worry for voters. Basic commodities have increased dramatically—for example, eggs were up 11% over the last year. Rent hikes continue to put pressure on household budgets. While inflation is slowly coming down, Australians are feeling the Albanese government hasn’t acted enough to ease pressure.

Housing Affordability and Healthcare Pressure

Housing is still a pressing concern since Australian cities are among the least affordable in the world. Although both major parties have put forward reforms, their implementation plans are vastly different.

Australia’s universal healthcare system is under tremendous pressure. With shortages of staff and increasing costs, many Australians are putting off or skipping treatment. Both Labor and the Coalition have committed substantial funding to enhance the system.

Climate Policy and Energy Transition

Energy policy deeply polarizes the ALP and the Coalition. Both parties have different approaches as Australia attempts to move beyond fossil fuels. Climate change and renewable energy continue to be election-defining themes.

Foreign Policy: China and U.S. Dynamics

The incoming government will be confronted by a fraught global environment. China is Australia’s biggest trade partner, but is increasingly seen with strategic distrust. Add to that Donald Trump’s recent reversion to protectionist economic policy.

Compulsory Voting and Democracy Sausages

Voting is compulsory in Australia. Those who don’t vote without a good reason will get a $ 20 penalty. This practice, instituted in 1924, guarantees voter turnout of more than 90% typically.

Elections have long been held on Saturdays. Employers must give time off work to vote. One of the characteristics of Australian elections is the “democracy sausage,” a barbecued snack offered at polling booths as part of community fundraising.

Australia has a preferential voting system. Voters list candidates in order of preference. No candidate receives more than 50% of the first-choice votes. The least popular candidates are eliminated, and their votes are redistributed until a candidate achieves a majority.

Parliamentary Breakdown and What’s at Stake

All 150 House of Representatives and 40 of 76 Senate seats are contested. A party needs to win 76 seats to have a majority.

Labor has 78 seats, but the loss of one seat in redistricting means that losing only two seats could lead to a minority government. The Coalition has 57 seats and will need to overturn at least 19, most of which were won by independents in 2022.

When to See Results

Counting of votes commences as soon as polls close tonight. Up-to-date information will be available on the Australian Electoral Commission’s (AEC) website. Unofficial outcomes are usually clear by nightfall, although conclusive certification may take a few days because the counting is done manually for almost 18 million votes, including overseas votes.

</excerpt>

Australians will vote on Saturday in a tightly contested national election. The vote comes as many citizens worry about rising living costs, housing affordability, and trade uncertainty, especially after U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs added pressure to global markets.

The two main contenders are Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who leads the centre-left Labor Party, and Peter Dutton, who heads the conservative Liberal-National Coalition. Here’s how both sides differ on major policy issues:

Housing Plans Offer Different Paths to Home Ownership

Labor’s Proposal:
Labor would help first-time buyers by allowing them to purchase homes with just a 5% down payment. It also promised to spend A$10 billion to build up to 100,000 new homes over time.

Liberal-Nationals’ Plan:
Meanwhile, the Coalition would let first-time buyers use up to A$50,000 from their retirement savings for a home down payment. They also pledged to make mortgage interest tax-deductible and committed A$5 billion to improve housing infrastructure.

Health Policy Targets Medicare and Mental Health Support

Labor’s Healthcare Vision:
Labor aims to boost access to health services. It promised A$8.5 billion to fund 18 million additional general practitioner visits each year. The party also committed A$1 billion for expanding free public mental health services. To reduce hospital pressure, it would open 50 new urgent care clinics.

Coalition’s Health Approach:
The Liberal-Nationals matched Labor’s A$8.5 billion Medicare boost. They also pledged A$400 million for youth mental health programs. Furthermore, they would double subsidised psychology sessions, increasing them from 10 to 20 per year.

Competing Tax and Economic Relief Plans

Labor’s Relief Measures:
Labor would offer workers a one-time tax deduction of A$1,000 for job-related expenses. It would also cut student debt by 20%. Before calling the election, Labor passed laws to lower the lowest income tax rate.

Coalition’s Economic Strategy:
On the other hand, the Coalition plans to reverse Labor’s tax cuts. Instead, it would offer a tax offset worth up to A$1,200 for those earning up to A$144,000. They also promise to cut fuel prices by A$0.25 per litre for one year by reducing duties.

To reduce spending, they plan to shrink the public workforce by 41,000 jobs through a hiring freeze and natural attrition. This move could save A$7 billion annually.

Energy Policies Focus on Costs and Clean Power

Labor’s Clean Energy Drive:
Labor pledged A$2.3 billion to help households install solar battery systems. It also extended rebates on energy bills for homes and small businesses. Additionally, it increased clean energy funding by A$2 billion through its green bank, aiming for a renewable-powered electricity grid supported by gas, batteries, and hydro.

Coalition’s Focus on Gas and Nuclear:
The Coalition would force LNG exporters to supply some uncontracted gas to the local market. This would help lower domestic energy prices. They also plan to cut regulatory delays for new gas projects and speed up a decision on extending Woodside’s LNG plant.

Looking ahead, they want to develop a nuclear energy sector by building seven nuclear plants across Australia. However, nuclear power is currently banned in the country.

Defence Spending Becomes a Key Dividing Line

Labor’s Current Commitment:
Labor did not offer new defence spending promises during the campaign. However, it pointed to its existing plan to boost defence funding by A$50 billion over 10 years. This would raise defence spending to 2.3% of GDP, up from the current 2%.

Coalition’s Expanded Defence Plan:
In contrast, the Coalition would spend A$21 billion more than Labor over five years. Their goal is to raise defence spending to 2.5% of GDP within five years, and eventually 3% in a decade. They also pledged A$3 billion to purchase more joint strike fighter jets.

Migration Policy Shows Clear Differences

Labor’s Position:
Labor has not made any specific promises related to migration during the campaign.

Coalition’s Migration Cuts:
The Coalition would reduce the permanent migration intake from 185,000 to 140,000 for two years. The number would then increase to 150,000 in year three and 160,000 in year four. They also aim to cut net migration by 100,000 annually compared to Labor’s levels. Additionally, they would reduce the number of new international students at public universities by 30,000 each year.

Currency Note:
At the time of writing, $1 equals 1.5635 Australian dollars.

Early Voting Begins In Australia As Albanese Takes Lead, Dutton Faces Trump Comparisons

<excerpt>Early voting begins in Australia’s federal election, with Labor slightly ahead. Opposition leader Peter Dutton faces backlash for policy missteps, while Albanese urges caution, recalling Labor’s surprise 2019 defeat.
</excerpt>

Early voting started around Australia on Tuesday in advance of the May 3 federal election, where Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s centre-left Labor Party was enjoying a slim advantage over the conservative opposition.

According to the Australian Electoral Commission, early and postal voting is forecast to represent close to half of total votes cast, a continued drift away from election-day voting.

Labor’s advantage occurs during a slump in popularity for opposition leader Peter Dutton, who has battled to detach himself from ideological perceptions of alignment with US former President Donald Trump.

Dutton recently ditched a contentious plan to require full-time office returns for federal employees and reduce thousands of public sector workers, a plan widely said to have been drawn from Trump’s “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE), linked to Elon Musk.

This turnaround has been accompanied by a significant shift in public opinion. Albanese, who had been six points behind Dutton in January, now has the lead by as many as nine points based on polls taken early this month.

A Newspoll survey conducted earlier this month with the Australia system of preferential voting placed Labor four points in front. Based on this voting system, votes are ranked for candidates and are redistributed until they reach a majority.

Albanese, addressing journalists on Monday, emphasized that his campaign is not assuming anything. “There’s no complacency from my camp, I assure you of that,” he said, referring to the surprise result of the 2019 election when early betting had Labor in front, but the Liberals ended up winning.

The two leaders will confront each other in a third and last televised debate Tuesday night.

On the day of campaigning, things were low-key as news of Pope Francis’ passing overshadowed political activity with mourning and tributes.

“Relationships Like With Modi Matter” — Anthony Albanese Justifies Third-Term Ambition

<excerpt>Prime Minister Albanese seeks a third term with a major Cabinet reshuffle. He emphasizes stable leadership amid global challenges and a tight election race.
</excerpt>

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced his plans to pursue a third term if he is re-elected in the upcoming May 3 elections. In an exclusive interview with The Nightly, Albanese highlighted the significance of stable leadership, hinting at a significant Cabinet reshuffle if his government secures another term. This revelation comes at the right time as Albanese battles for a second term and preserves the Labor Party’s three-seat majority to escape a minority government.

While Anthony Albanese is seeking a second term, his decision to run for a third has been met with raised eyebrows, considering the tumultuous history of Australian politics. A win in May would be a milestone for Albanese as it would put an end to a decade-long merry-go-round of prime ministers that started with Julia Gillard’s reign in 2010 after she ousted Kevin Rudd. This trend lasted under the eight-year rule of the Liberal Party to Albanese’s narrow 2022 victory.

A Secure First Term Understated Political Turmoil

As much as Albanese’s government struggled in a tumultuous first term, its accomplishments were admired by Anthony Albanese. He had spoken positively in an interview on The Nightly about the possibility of the current government’s having the most secure first term ever in the history of post-war Australia compared to the history of leadership churn for the preceding decades. He pointed out, “I’m not getting ahead of myself — I’m on a ballot on the third of May, and I’m committed to winning. And I will complete a full term — I’m committed to doing that. Because I believe there’s been too much chopping and changing.”

Albanese is seeking to lead for more than nine years, a steady time for the Labor Party. If he is successful, he will be the first leader since John Howard in 2004 to secure a second term. If he continues for another complete term, he will overtake Paul Keating as Labor’s second-longest serving prime minister post-war, only behind Bob Hawke.

International Relationships of Anthony Albanese

Albanese also emphasized the importance of long-term leadership in the global arena, especially in building ties with powerful world leaders like Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He explained that Australia’s image has been tainted by its record of regular changes in prime ministers. “It’s said, overseas, that Australia chopping and changing prime ministers is not a good thing,” he added. “Getting stability into Australia’s leadership and our position in the world as well does take time.”

Through his leadership, Albanese has fostered the most important diplomatic relationships, including with Indonesian President Prabowo, and met Modi 11 times, reiterating their significance for the national interests of Australia.

Cabinet Reshuffle Post-Election

Among Albanese’s first tasks if he returns to office will be reshuffling his Cabinet. The rules within Labor enable the Prime Minister to determine the ministerial portfolio allocation, but the caucus decides who occupies Cabinet spots. Albanese signaled that although the hard core leadership team of Richard Marles (Defence), Penny Wong (Foreign Affairs), Jim Chalmers (Treasury), Don Farrell (Trade), and Katy Gallagher (Finance) would stay put, other roles will be on offer.

“The key individuals in my Government I expect to maintain the same portfolios throughout the leaders group, post-election as well,” Albanese stated. But with high-profile retirements in the government, such as Linda Burney, Brendan O’Connor, Bill Shorten, and Stephen Jones, the reshuffle will have to be done in order to make room for fresh faces.

No Guarantees for Tanya Plibersek’s Portfolio

In a curious twist, Anthony Albanese did not promise to keep Tanya Plibersek in the environment portfolio, even though they are best friends. “I’ll pledge to attempting to win this election. I don’t assume,” he said, though he praised Plibersek’s work in her present role. Plibersek, who joked off a cringe-worthy public moment between them at a recent campaign rally, declared she was confident about their working relationship, describing them as “best buddies.”

The Significance of a Majority Government

Albanese also emphasized the significance of having a majority government, especially in times of global economic uncertainty. He underscored the need for confidence in the economy and in governance, citing that a majority in the House of Representatives would provide easier passage of bills and more political stability. “Economic confidence could be more reassured with a majority government,” he clarified.

With the election fast approaching, Albanese’s focus remains on securing the Labor Party’s future by steering clear of speculations about his leadership and plans. His ambition, holding a clear vision for a full second term while laying foundations for a third, is seen as a shrewd strategy to consolidate stability within his party and guarantee its long-term dominance in Australian politics.

Anthony Albanese Looks Back at His Leadership

As for regrets, Albanese accepted that no leader is without their challenges but opted to sidestep mentioning specific criticisms. “There are always things you could do better,” he said, but he made it clear that he does not dwell on media evaluations of his performance. Rather, he keeps himself busy with what lies ahead and the urgent necessity of defending his government’s second term in the interest of the country.

In the weeks ahead, the nation will be glued to the May 3 election, when Albanese’s political fate—and the destiny of Australia’s leadership—will be decided.

Why Modi Government Sees Opportunity in Trump’s Tariffs?

<excerpt>Despite Trump’s tariffs, India remains optimistic, citing ‘Mission 500’ and ‘Clause 4’ for trade opportunities. Officials believe bilateral trade talks could lead to concessions. India also sees potential in markets affected by higher tariffs.
</excerpt>

As the Waqf Bill passed smoothly in the Lok Sabha, government officials kept a close eye on US President Donald Trump’s press conference regarding ‘reciprocal tariffs’. It was 2 a.m. in Sansad Bhawan with mixed feelings, relief that the bill had passed but nervousness regarding the tariff figures announced fresh.

India was slapped with a 26% tariff, a rate that government sources indicate was widely anticipated. Government officials had been looking to score a rate of around 25-26%, so the revelation was not unexpected. As a precaution, the government had already been considering alternative plans.

A comparative examination of other countries affected by the tariffs added to the understanding. Though other countries such as Cambodia (49%), Indonesia (32%), China (34%), and Bangladesh (37%) had to deal with steeper levies, Canada and Mexico, being among the first tariff targets, were excluded from the most recent list. In a detailed explanation, the Commerce Ministry welcomed the situation, stating this places India in a comparatively better position and offers a chance to negotiate with countries subject to steeper tariffs.

The greatest ground for optimism for India is Clause 4 of the US presidential proclamation, which grants permission to review the tariffs at periodic intervals. Official sources feel this is a provision that benefits India. “Since India’s intention, which we will demonstrate, America will notice our potential and provide concessions when it decides to review,” they said.

Besides, India is counting on Mission 500—the plan unveiled by President Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, to double bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030. An official confirmed, “Accordingly, discussions are going on between India and US trade teams for the expeditious conclusion of a mutually beneficial, multi-sectoral Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA).”

Government sources are convinced that this is only the start of talks. India is hopeful given the good relationship between Prime Minister Modi and President Trump. Trump has already identified Modi as a “good negotiator” previously, which gives them confidence that India can conduct trade talks. With a team of veterans behind them, such as External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, Indian officials are confident in their stance.

In addition, India sees this challenge as a means of further penetrating, especially to those countries hardest hit by the tariffs. The government also views this as a push for local businesses to become more competitive and attract more consumers.

</excerpt>

US President Donald Trump has imposed a 10% tariff on Australian imports from Heard and McDonald Islands, remote territories near Antarctica. The move, part of his broader “Liberation Day tariffs,” has sparked confusion. These islands have no residents, businesses, or trade. The White House claims they were included simply because they are Australian, but critics call it a flawed trade policy. Australian officials have slammed the decision as unnecessary and irrational.

Tariff on Empty Land: A Policy Without Logic?

Heard and McDonald Islands lie over 4,000 kilometers from mainland Australia. These frozen, volcanic islands are among the most remote places on Earth. They have no permanent population, industry, or infrastructure. Their only inhabitants are penguins, seals, and seabirds. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, they serve as an ecological sanctuary, not a trade hub.

Despite their isolation, Trump administration added them to the tariff list, arguing that Australian territories must be included. The islands conduct no trade with the US, making the tariff meaningless. Reaching Heard Island requires a 10-day sea journey from Fremantle, Western Australia—weather permitting—further proving its lack of economic relevance.

Australia Reacts: Confusion and Frustration

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese slammed the decision, saying, “Nowhere on earth is safe.” He admitted tariffs on Australian goods were expected but found it absurd to impose them on uninhabited islands. He warned the move could strain US – Australia relations.

Our Government will always stand up for Australia.

These are uncertain times – but all Australians can be certain of this: we will always stand up for Australian jobs, Australian industry, Australian consumers and Australian values.

These tariffs are not unexpected, but they… pic.twitter.com/bXaFTcvnN8

— Anthony Albanese (@AlboMP) April 2, 2025

The public and media reacted with disbelief and humor. Social media users mocked the policy, with one joking, “Finally, someone is standing up to the penguin trade imbalance!” It has been noted that no humans had visited the islands in nearly a decade, making the tariff even more puzzling.

The tariff list also included other Australian territories, such as the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Christmas Island, and Norfolk Island. Norfolk Island, with a small population, now faces a 29% tariff—far higher than the 10% on mainland Australia.

Trump’s decision has reignited concerns about the reasoning behind US trade policies. Experts argue that imposing tariffs on empty lands reflects a shift toward aggressive but sometimes irrational economic strategies. Whether this is symbolic or a serious trade measure remains unclear, but it has certainly raised eyebrows worldwide.

</excerpt>

Australia will hold its general election on May 3, as announced by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Friday (March 28). The contest is expected to be fought between Anthony Albanese’s Labour Party and Peter Dutton’s Liberal-National Coalition. Key election issues include the rising cost of living, energy policies, and relations with the United States. With 76 seats needed to form a government, minor parties and independents could play a crucial role if no party secures a majority. The election also highlights Australia’s high voter turnout due to compulsory voting laws.

A High-Stakes Election

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed the election date on March 28, officially resigning from public office to initiate the election process. The upcoming vote will determine whether the Labour Party secures a second term or if the opposition regains power. Surveys indicate a tight race between Anthony Albanese and Peter Dutton, with both leaders presenting contrasting policy approaches.

To secure a government, a party must win at least 76 of the 150 seats in the House of Representatives. Currently, the Labour Party holds 78 seats—just two above the majority threshold. Meanwhile, the Liberal-National Coalition lags at 57 seats, making Dutton’s path to victory challenging. If neither party wins a majority, independent candidates could influence the formation of a coalition government.

Key Candidates and Their Backgrounds

The election sees a contest between two leaders with working-class backgrounds.

Anthony Albanese (Labour Party): Raised in a government-subsidized flat in Sydney, Anthony Albanese spent his teenage years caring for his mother, who suffered from rheumatoid arthritis. His leadership has focused on economic reforms and social welfare policies.

Peter Dutton (Liberal-National Coalition): The 54-year-old was raised in Brisbane as the son of a bricklayer. A former policeman and small business owner, Peter Dutton served as defense minister and played a key role in the 2021 AUKUS nuclear submarine deal with the U.S. and Britain. His experience in law enforcement shapes his tough stance on crime and security.

Major Election Issues

Several critical issues dominate the election debate:

Cost of Living and Economy:-

With inflation driving up housing costs and interest rates remaining high, voters are seeking economic relief. While the Labour government has introduced tax cuts and subsidies for rent and energy bills, affordability remains a pressing concern.

Energy Policy and Climate Commitments:-

Both parties aim for net-zero emissions by 2050, but their strategies differ significantly. Labour supports renewable energy investments, while the opposition proposes building seven government-funded nuclear power plants. The debate over energy policies is a defining issue in this election.

Nuclear Power: A Divisive Issue

Despite possessing vast uranium reserves, Australia has enforced a near-ban on nuclear energy since 1998.

Peter Dutton advocates for nuclear energy as a stable, low-emission solution to complement renewable sources.

Anthony Albanese strongly opposes nuclear power, calling it economically unviable and unnecessary for Australia’s energy transition.

Australia’s Relationship with the United States

The return of Donald Trump’s influence in U.S. politics has led to a shift in tone from Australian officials.

Anthony Albanese and his administration, once vocal critics of Trump, have moderated their rhetoric.

Peter Dutton, while largely silent on Trump, maintains close ties with conservative figures such as mining magnate Gina Rinehart, a strong Trump supporter.

Discontent with major parties has fueled support for independent candidates, who are pushing for greater transparency and stronger climate policies. Some polls suggest that 10 or more unaligned crossbenchers could determine the next government, increasing the likelihood of a minority government.

Why Australia Has One of the Highest Voter Turnouts ?

Australia enforces compulsory voting, requiring registered voters to cast ballots or face a fine of AUD 20 (approximately Rs 1,079). Since this law was introduced in 1924, voter turnout has never fallen below 90%. Only 18 other countries in the world implement compulsory voting.

As Australia heads toward a closely contested election, issues like economic stability, energy policies, and international relations will shape voter decisions. With the potential for a minority government, independents and smaller parties could play a decisive role in forming the next administration. The outcome on May 3 will determine the direction of Australia’s domestic and foreign policies for the next three years.

</excerpt>

Australia is set to hold its federal election on May 3, a highly anticipated political event that will determine the country’s leadership for the next term. The Australia election is expected to be a closely contested battle, with key issues like the economy, healthcare and national security shaping voter sentiment.

Key Candidates and Parties for Australia Election

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, representing the ruling Labor Party, will seek re-election, emphasizing his administration’s achievements. Albanese faces strong opposition from the Liberal-National Coalition, led by Peter Dutton.

Additionally, smaller parties, including the Greens and various independent candidates, are expected to play a crucial role in determining the balance of power, particularly in closely contested constituencies.

Economic Concerns ahead of Australia Election

The Australian economy remains a top priority for voters. While the Labor government has emphasized its role in keeping inflation in check and maintaining job growth.

While the opposition has criticized rising living costs and housing affordability issues. The Coalition’s economic policies focus on tax relief for businesses and individuals, aiming to stimulate economic growth.

Climate and Energy Policy

Climate change remains a divisive topic in Australian politics. The Labor government has pledged to accelerate renewable energy projects and cut carbon emissions significantly by 2030. In contrast, the opposition argues for a balanced approach that includes fossil fuel investment to ensure energy security and prevent economic disruption.

Healthcare and Cost of Living

Rising healthcare costs and the strain on public health services have been major concerns. The Labor government has introduced policies to expand Medicare and reduce prescription drug prices,

While the opposition vows to introduce new funding models for hospitals and aged care facilities to be highlighted.

National Security and Immigration

Border security and immigration policies are also under scrutiny. The Coalition has proposed stricter immigration laws, citing national security and economic stability

The Labor government on the other hand has advocated for a more humane approach to immigration while maintaining strict border control measures.

Electoral Landscape and Voter Sentiment

Polls suggest a tight race between the parties, with decisive swing seats in New South Wales, Queensland, and Victoria. The role of independent candidates and minor parties will be critical, especially in marginal electorates.

As Australia heads to the polls on May 3, voters will weigh economic policies, climate action, healthcare reforms, and national security measures before making their choice. The election results will shape the nation’s direction for the coming years.

The election will shape Australia’s economic future, energy policies, and healthcare funding.
</excerpt>

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese showed up at Governor-General David Hurley’s official residence on Friday to formally request permission to call an election for May 3, local reports say. The prime minister is required, under Australia’s constitution, to get the Governor-General’s approval, as he is the representative of Britain’s King Charles, before announcing an election date.

Albanese had indicated on Thursday that an election call was coming soon, as his center-left coalition forced through a bill for new tax cuts in a desperate attempt to win back voters. The nation needs to have its next federal election by May 17 because it has a three-year parliamentary term.

Over the past few months, the Labor government has rolled out a series of policies to try to ease economic burdens on families and businesses, such as tax relief policies announced in Tuesday’s budget. But with cost-of-living issues dominating the headlines, Albanese has a tough campaign in front of him.

The governing Labor Party swept to parliamentary power in 2022 but new opinion polling reveals a fierce battleground with opposition Liberal-National Coalition. When none of the dominant parties controls an outright majority in the election, smaller political forces could come together to make and break new government.

Albanese, a working-class Labor politician from boyhood in public housing, initially had high approval ratings but has been battling voter discontent with rising living expenses and increased interest rates. Despite inflation slowing and the Reserve Bank of Australia cutting rates in February after a five-year pause, his popularity is still under threat.

Opposition leader Peter Dutton, a ex-police officer and interior minister, has campaigned on law-and-order policies and a contentious campaign for nuclear energy pitted against Labor’s renewable energy plan. Both leaders have committed an extra A$8.5 billion ($5.42 billion) over four years to reinforce Australia’s public health system.

A Fun Meeting with the Indian Cricket Team

In a light-hearted video circulating online, Prime Minister Albanese can be seen exchanging pleasantries with the Indian cricketers, offering compliments and joking around. Albanese shared a warm handshake with Indian Captain Rohit Sharma, before turning his attention to Jasprit Bumrah. Praising Bumrah’s captaincy style, Albanese commented on the bowler’s distinctive approach to the game, which left Bumrah grinning.

WATCH THE VIRAL VIDEO:

The conversation continued with a cheerful greeting for former Indian Captain Virat Kohli. Albanese praised Kohli for his remarkable century in Perth, joking, “Good ton in Perth, as if we weren’t suffering enough at that point.” To this, Kohli responded with a laugh, saying, “Always got to add some spice,” prompting Albanese to break into laughter as well.

Warm-Up Match Preparation for India

The friendly exchange marked a light moment ahead of India’s practice match against the Australian Prime Minister’s XI, which will play a pivotal role in preparing the Indian team for the upcoming day-night Test against Australia in Adelaide. The match is particularly significant as it will be the only warm-up game India will have before the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, set to begin on December 6.

The Indian team’s visit to Canberra follows their triumph in the first Test in Perth, where they defeated Australia by 295 runs. In that match, Virat Kohli scored his 30th Test century, while Jasprit Bumrah was named Player of the Match after taking eight wickets, leading India to a dominant victory.

Albanese’s Support for Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy

During the meet-up, Albanese also shared a message with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, backing the Australian team ahead of their upcoming challenges. “Big challenge ahead for the PM’s XI at Manuka Oval this week against an amazing Indian side. But as I said to PM Narendra Modi, I’m backing the Aussies to get the job done,” he remarked.

Looking Ahead to the Border-Gavaskar Trophy

As the Indian team gears up for the upcoming day-night Test match at Adelaide, their time in Canberra for the pink-ball warm-up match against the PM’s XI will be crucial for getting acclimatized to the conditions. The match, scheduled to start on December 6, will be a key battle for both teams in this highly anticipated series.

India’s Preparations in Full Swing

The Indian cricket team arrived in Canberra from Perth on the morning of November 28, Thursday. The team’s preparations for the second Test against Australia are in full swing, with the warm-up match serving as a perfect opportunity for the players to fine-tune their strategies and performance ahead of the critical Border-Gavaskar Trophy clash.

</excerpt>

Australia has elevated its terror threat level from “possible” to “probable,” due to a notable rise in extremist ideologies within the country. The government has cautioned that there is now a greater than 50% likelihood of a domestic attack being planned within the next year.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the change on Monday after receiving recommendations from security services, though he stressed that no immediate threat exists. “The advice we have received indicates that more Australians are adopting a wider array of extreme ideologies, and we must remain vigilant,” he stated during a press conference. The threat level had been reduced to “possible” in 2022 following eight years at “probable.”

Mike Burgess, director general of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), noted that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, particularly the clash between Israel and Hamas that began on October 7, has influenced the decision. “The conflict has incited grievances, spurred protests, weakened social cohesion, and increased intolerance,” Burgess said.

In recent months, Australia has witnessed several violent incidents, some of which have been linked to extremism. In April, police categorized a knife attack on an Assyrian church bishop and his followers in Sydney as a terrorist act motivated by suspected religious extremism.

This marks the first reshuffle since the centre-left Labor Party came to power in May 2022, as Albanese aims to refresh his team ahead of the next general election expected in 2025.

In a televised media conference in Canberra, Albanese stated, “I would expect that this is the team that I will take to the election when it is held sometime in the future.”

Key changes in the reshuffle include Tony Burke, currently arts minister, assuming the significant portfolios of home affairs, immigration and multicultural affairs, and cyber security. Clare O’Neil will shift from home affairs and cyber security to housing and homelessness, remaining in the cabinet. Meanwhile, immigration minister Andrew Giles will move to skills and training, no longer holding a cabinet position.

Northern Territory Senator Malarndirri McCarthy will take over as minister for indigenous Australians.

The reshuffle follows announcements from long-serving Labor ministers Brendan O’Connor and Linda Burney, who declared they would retire at the next election. Albanese praised both O’Connor and Burney for their “extraordinary contribution” to the nation over a long period.

</excerpt>

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has reiterated his government’s strong position on the case of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, underscoring the importance of his return to Australia amid ongoing legal proceedings in the United States.

Assange has reportedly left the United Kingdom after agreeing to a plea deal with the Biden administration, which could help him avoid imprisonment in the US.

“The Australian Government has consistently said that Mr Assange’s case has dragged on for too long, and that there is nothing to be gained by his continued incarceration. We want him brought home to Australia,” Prime Minister Albanese told the Australian parliament.

Recognising the complexities of Assange’s legal situation, Prime Minister Albanese added, “The government is certainly aware that Australian citizen Julian Assange has legal proceedings scheduled in the United States. While this is a welcome development, we recognise that these proceedings are crucial and delicate.”

Emphasising his longstanding support for Assange, Albanese stated, “I’ve been very clear, as both the Labor leader in opposition and as Prime Minister, that regardless of the views that people have about Mr Assange’s activities, the case has dragged on for too long.”

Highlighting diplomatic efforts, he further said, “There is nothing to be gained by his continued incarceration, and we want him brought home to Australia. We have engaged and advocated Australia’s interests, using all appropriate channels to support a positive outcome, and I’ve done that since very early on in my prime ministership.”

Assange has reportedly agreed to plead guilty to a felony charge related to his involvement in one of the largest leaks of classified US government documents. If a federal judge approves the agreement, Assange would receive a 62-month sentence, equivalent to the time he has already served in London’s high-security Belmarsh prison while fighting extradition to the US. This plea deal, which credits his time served, could allow Assange to return to Australia immediately.

WikiLeaks confirmed Assange’s release from Belmarsh, announcing on Tuesday that he was granted bail by the High Court in London and subsequently left from Stansted airport. A video posted by WikiLeaks showed Assange boarding a plane, as reported by CNN.

Last month, a UK court ruled in Assange’s favour, granting him the right to appeal his final challenge against extradition to the US. This ruling marked a significant victory for Assange after years of legal battles to avoid prosecution in the United States.

Assange’s case has garnered international attention and ignited debates on press freedom, government transparency, and the legal ramifications of publishing classified information. His journey from seeking asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy in London for seven years to imprisonment in Belmarsh, and now potentially to a plea deal and return to Australia, has been closely followed by supporters, critics, and legal experts alike, according to CNN.

</excerpt>

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he was working in the “most effective way possible” to secure the release of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, but declined an invitation on Monday to meet the Australian citizen’s wife. Independent lawmaker Andrew Wilkie asked Albanese if he would meet Assange’s wife Stella Assange, who was watching Parliament from the public gallery.
Albanese said a meeting with Stella Assange wouldn’t help her 51-year-old husband who is in a London prison fighting extradition to the United States.
“A priority for us isn’t doing something that is a demonstration, it’s actually doing something that produces an outcome,” Albanese told Parliament. “And that’s my focus, not grandstanding.”
Albanese was with US President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in Japan over the weekend for the Group of Seven leading industrial nations summit.Albanese did not say whether he had raised with either leader Australia’s position that Assange had been incarcerated for too long.
Albanese said he appreciated opposition leader Peter Dutton’s recent comments that he agreed with the government that Assange should be released.
“Nothing is served from the ongoing incarceration of Julian Assange. What I have done … is to act in the most effective way possible,” he said. “What I have done is act diplomatically in order to maximize the opportunity that is there of breaking through an issue which has gone on for far too long.”
But Albanese said the issue was not simple.Assange has spent four years in Britain’s Belmarsh Prison fighting extradition. Before that, Assange had taken asylum for seven years in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London.Stella Assange used her first visit to Australia to address the National Press Club on Monday with her husband’s lawyer, Jennifer Robinson.
The wife said her husband had spent 1,502 days behind bars under threat of extradition to the United States, where he faces a 175-year sentence on espionage charges.
“If Julian is extradited, he will be buried in the deepest, darkest hole of the US prison system, isolated forever,” she said. “We must do everything we can to ensure that Julian never, ever sets foot in a US prison.”

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has tested positive for Covid-19. He took to his twitter to announce the same. he tweeted that he will be isolating himself and will continue to work from home. “This afternoon I had a routine PCR test which has returned a positive result for COVID-19. I will be isolating and will continue to work from home,” the Australian Prime Minister tweeted.

“I encourage anyone who is unwell to test and to take any extra precautions to keep their families and neighbours well,” he added.

According to the WHO chief, the world is much closer to being able to say that the emergency phase of the pandemic is over – but we’re not there yet.
“Gaps in surveillance, testing, sequencing and vaccination are continuing to create the perfect conditions for a new variant of concern to emerge that could cause significant mortality,” he said.
Tedros urged all countries to take a risk-based approach that protects both public health and human rights.
