Anna University Sexual Assault Case: BJP Leader Says Will Whip Himself in Shame

Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President K. Annamalai on Thursday announced that he would observe a 48-day fast, whip himself, and remain barefoot in protest against the ruling DMK government over the alleged sexual assault of a student at a university in Chennai.

Speaking at a press conference, Annamalai removed his shoe and declared, “From tomorrow onwards, until the DMK is removed from power, I will not wear any footwear. From tomorrow, K. Annamalai will protest against the government’s handling of the Anna University student’s sexual harassment case.”

“Tomorrow, I will hold a protest in front of my house, where I will whip myself six times. Starting tomorrow, I will fast for 48 days and appeal to the six-armed Murugan. Tomorrow, a protest will be held in front of the house of every BJP member. From tomorrow, until the DMK is removed from power, I will not wear sandals. There must be an end to this,” said Annamalai.

BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan and other party cadres were detained by the Tamil Nadu Police on Thursday during protests organised by the BJP and AIADMK against the alleged sexual assault of a female student on the Anna University campus in Chennai.

Soundararajan, who led the BJP’s protest, accused the DMK-led state government of attempting to silence dissent, claiming, “This is atrocious. They want to crush our voice.” She added that police had detained her and several party workers during the protest.

The incident involved a second-year student of Anna University who was allegedly sexually assaulted by a man on the university campus on Monday night. One person has been arrested in connection with the case.

Earlier, Tamilisai Soundararajan and other BJP members staged a demonstration condemning the DMK government. Police also detained workers of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) as they staged a protest against the ruling government over the incident.

On Wednesday, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) Founder-President Thol. Thirumavalavan called for swift action in connection with the case.

Meanwhile, actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party chief Vijay described the incident as “deeply shocking and painful,” urging the Tamil Nadu government to take swift legal action against the perpetrator.

“Although the police have informed that the individual who committed the assault has been arrested, I urge the Tamil Nadu government to ensure swift legal action and appropriate punishment. If anyone else is involved in this heinous crime, they should also be held accountable promptly,” Vijay said in a post on X.

Tamil Nadu BJP President K. Annamalai also criticised the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led government, alleging a surge in crimes against women.

Speaking to reporters, Annamalai claimed that two unidentified individuals entered the campus and assaulted the student.

“Crimes against women are at an all-time high. This incident is not only shocking but has left us paralysed for a moment. One of the safest places, the sprawling Anna University campus, witnessed this horrific crime. A girl and boy were on campus when two unknown individuals entered, beat up the boy, and sexually assaulted the girl, leaving her injured. The fact that the CCTVs were not functioning highlights the current state of law and order in Tamil Nadu. We hope the police will be given the freedom to act. With all MLAs and MPs from DMK in Chennai, is this a city that safeguards its people? I hope and pray the Tamil Nadu government takes appropriate action,” he said.

Anna University Rape Case: Annamalai Whips Himself in Protest Outside Coimbatore Residence

Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai on Friday took a dramatic step by whipping himself multiple times to protest against the DMK government, accusing it of failing to ensure the safety of students at Anna University in Chennai.

Blasting the government administration, Annamalai questioned the leak by DMK government and the police which compromised a woman victim’s dignity to have her personal data, claiming it as the act is “shameful and shows that a governmental party is completely irresponsible to have so”.

He further questioned the CCTV surveillance that did not exist on the university campus, inquiring about the Nirbhaya fund, which is allocated by the state for women’s safety. “The FIR itself has exposed the victim’s identity and portrayed her in a poor light. This is a shame, and the DMK government must take responsibility,” he said, questioning law minister S Regupathy, who was defending the government’s action.

Annalmalai went further in condemning the Chennai police, calling for the dismissal of the city’s police commissioner or deputy commissioner responsible for mishandling the case. He declared that cadres of the BJP would no longer participate in public protests leading to arrests but urged them to hold demonstrations at their homes.

The BJP president also announced a 48-day fast and a spiritual sojourn to the six Arupadai Veedu (Lord Muruga’s six abodes) to “complain to Murugan” about the decline of governance in the state. “This kind of dirty politics leaves no room for respect or healthy debate. Women’s safety should not be compromised under any circumstance,” he said, appealing to the middle class to rise and challenge the DMK regime.

This unexpected visit follows rumors of an intra-party feud within the Tamil Nadu BJP after their poor performance in the recent parliamentary elections, where they did not win a single seat in the state.

After the meeting, Annamalai shared a photo on social media, praising Soundararajan’s political experience. “Asserting that the lotus will surely bloom in Tamil Nadu, Tamilisai Soundararajan worked hard for it, her political experience and advice continues to provide inspiration for the development of the party,” Annamalai wrote.

Soundararajan also shared Annamalai’s post, expressing her happiness at meeting him.

The BJP’s electoral defeat has reportedly triggered internal strife, with some members criticizing Annamalai’s leadership and his decision to end the alliance with AIADMK. The discord grew when Tamilisai Soundararajan, who lost in the South Chennai constituency, openly criticized Annamalai’s faction, sparking backlash from his supporters on social media.

Compounding the controversy, a video emerged showing Amit Shah apparently reprimanding Tamilisai Soundararajan at Chandrababu Naidu’s swearing-in ceremony in Andhra Pradesh. Tamilisai later clarified that Shah’s comments were advisory. In a post on ‘X’ on Thursday evening, Soundararajan stated that she met Shah for the first time since the Lok Sabha results and discussed “post-poll follow-up.”

‘Shock & pain’, CM Stalin condoles death of DMDK chief Vijayakanth

The mortal remains of Vijayakanth were taken to the DMDK office in Koyambedu from his Virugambakkam house in Chennai. Earlier in the day, Chief Minister MK Stalin paid floral tributes to Vijaykanth at his Chennai residence. Calling the latter’s demise a tragedy for Tamil Nadu and the film industry, CM Stalin said that the “news of the DMDK chief’s death brought shock and pain.” The Chief Minister’s Office in a statement said the “DMDK chief will be laid to rest with full state honors.”

Actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam President Kamal Haasan extended his condolences after the passing of DMDK chief and actor Vijayakanth on Thursday (28 December 2023). Vijayakanth died in Chennai at age 71 after testing positive for Covid-19 earlier that day.

Haasan said “The news of the death of my beloved brother Vijayakanth, the founder of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazgam party, a unique actor and captain of Tamil cinema, who was loved by all, is deeply saddening. He was a creator of innovative ideas in Tamilnadu politics. Fearless courage was his hallmark.”

He added, “Vijayakanth, a revolutionary artist who made his mark in both the fields of cinema and politics, will remain forever in our memories. I offer my heartfelt condolences to all his family, volunteers and fans who are grieving his loss.”

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami also conveyed condolences to Vijayakanth’s bereaved family. “I am deeply saddened to learn that Vijayakanth, President of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazgam, former Leader of Opposition and dear brother passed away due to ill health. I convey my deepest condolences to the bereaved Premalatha Vijayakanth, Annarath’s wife and DMDK General Secretary, her family and her volunteers. I pray that the soul of Vijayakanth, who has done many active works in public life and the field of art and is affectionately known as Captain by the people, rests in the shade of Lord Thiruvadi,” he said.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, and BJP state chief K Annamalai, too, condoled the demise of Vijayakanth.

Annamalai to kickstart meeting with BJP office bearers today

On Thursday, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Tamil Nadu President Annamalai will meet with party office bearers and district presidents in Chennai.
The vital meeting comes after the BJP lost a significant ally in the state last month when the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) cut ties with the BJP and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

According to sources, Annamalai had a discussion with the BJP high command in Delhi on the AIADMK alliance. In Thursday’s meeting, it is expected that Annamalai will share his views and those of the BJP’s central leaders with the office bearers.

TN BJP chief Annamalai criticizes Congress for making a mockery of themselves

Tamil Nadu BJP Chief, K Annamalai, took a swipe at Sonia Gandhi, former President of Congress, on Sunday, accusing the party of fielding a candidate who had been subjected to raids by central agencies over alleged connections with funding extremists.

Moreover, the BJP leader highlighted the irony in Congress’ rhetoric, as the party claims to prioritize the country’s sovereignty while fielding such candidates.

TN: Annamalai hits out at CM Stalin over BJP leader death

Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief K Annamalai on Friday hit out at Chief Minister MK Stalin over the death of BJP leader PPG Shankar and said that the CM is not able to maintain law and order in the state.

Taking to Twitter, Annamalai said, “I was very shocked to hear the news that Valarpuram Panchayat Council President and BJP list team state treasurer PPG Shankar has been hacked to death by anti-social elements. The chief minister who has the police in his hands is not able to maintain law and order, he is deceiving the public by pretending to be the number 1 chief minister.” He further said that the police, which is supposed to protect the life and property of the people, has been turned into a “propaganda department of the ruling party”.

“It is clear from the daily crime incidents that law and order is not under control under the DMK regime”, he added.He demanded strict action against the culprits and also said that delaying the same would invite protests across the state.

“I warn that the culprits should be found immediately and strict action should be taken and if such crimes continue, there will be protests across the state”, Annamalai said.

According to the police, BJP SC/ST wing state treasurer and Valarpuram panchayat president PPG Shankar was hacked to death by a gang on the outskirts of Chennai on Thursday night.

Migrant labourers’ issue: Police book TN BJP Chief Annamalai for inciting violence

Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party chief K Annamalai attacked the ruling DMK for the ongoing violence on the migrant labourers from Bihar in Tamil Nadu. A day after a case has been lodged against Annamalai for provoking violence and encouraging hostility between different factions.

Earlier, the TN BJP chief in his statement remarked that migrant labourers are safe in the state. But the DMK and CM Stalin are behind the hate against the Bihari labourers.

As per officials, a case has also been lodged against the BJP Bihar Twitter account holder regarding the stir in the state.

The Tamil Nadu police on Saturday booked three people, including an editor of the Dainik Bhaskar in Bihar, for allegedly spreading fake news about migrant workers being attacked in Tamil Nadu. Several videos are floating around on social media about the beating of migrant labourers in the south Indian state.

The news spread like wildfire that people in several districts, such as Coimbatore, Tiruppur, and Chennai, were being targeted. After that, a huge number of people employed in industries like garment, textile, and construction came out united and denied the report.

However, the BJP has been trying to escalate the issue in the Bihar Assembly by making hue and cry and urging the Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to send a team to Chennai to review the safety of the migrant labourers.

Meanwhile, Nitish took the matter seriously regarding the videos of attacks on migrant workers.

In his statement, Tamil Nadu’s Director General of Police Sylendra Babu released a statement, making it clear fake videos are hovering on social media, which is mischievous as well. The persons who are spreading rumours will not be spared.

BJP Leader K Annamalai attacks Rahul Gandhi

Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief K Annamalai took a swipe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who is leading Bharat Jodo Yatra, and said the Wayanad MP took 3,000 km to understand that there is no atmosphere of hatred in the country.

Attacking the Bharat Jodo Yatra, the BJP leader said Rahul Gandhi himself had admitted that there is no atmosphere of hatred in the country, indicating that the yatra has no motive. Annamalai said Congress’ mass outreach programme is useless since it lacks a clear vision.

“Padyatra should have a larger perspective. It is just that you are upset with Modi ji and you started a yatra. It should have a motive,” the Tamil Nadu BJP chief said.

The Bharat Jodo Yatra, which started in Kanyakumari on September 7, will conclude on January 30 in Srinagar after covering 3,970 km, 12 states and two Union territories.

The march has so far covered Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and is presently in Jammu and Kashmir. It is the longest march on foot by any Indian politician in the history of India, the Congress claimed earlier in a statement.

Chennai: Two DMK youth wing supporters allegedly harassed woman police personnel, arrested

Two DMK Youth Wing members were arrested after they allegedly harassed a woman police personnel during a public event the DMK political party sponsored in Chennai, according to sources.

Speaking for TN Health, Ma Subramanian, and DMK MP Kanimozhi were also present at the meeting.

Although the two suspects were also arrested by the Virugambakkam police, no charge has been filed.

The leader of the Tamil Nadu BJP, Annamalai, tweeted about this occurrence as well.
