</excerpt>

The tragic death of a 26-year-old UPSC aspirant in Delhi’s Old Rajinder Nagar has left the community in mourning. Anjali, originally from Akola, Maharashtra, was found hanging in her PG room on July 21. Her untimely demise has sparked widespread condolences and discussions online about the pressures faced by young aspirants.

Anjali’s Struggle with Depression

Anjali had been living in Delhi for the past four years, pursuing her dream of cracking the UPSC Civil Services exams. However, an apparent suicide note found in her room reveals the extent of her battle with depression and her desperate search for peace.

In the three-page note, Anjali expressed her frustration with systemic issues, including scams in government exams, lack of job opportunities for youth, and high rents in PGs and hostels. She appealed to the government to address these issues and also called for the legalization of euthanasia. Anjali requested that her organs be donated to those in need.

Reaction on Social Media

News of Anjali’s death spread quickly on social media, with many netizens expressing their condolences and anger at the systemic pressures faced by young aspirants.

Ram Kharbala, a user on X, criticized the government, stating, “There is neither employment nor jobs. The youth get hardly ₹8000 to ₹10000 despite working for 10-12 hours.”

Somnath, another user, commented on the detrimental impact of the “rat race” in coaching institutes on young people’s self-confidence.

Police Investigation

According to the police, Anjali’s family believes she was depressed due to harassment by a man. A friend mentioned that rising hostel rents had been a recent concern for Anjali, as she had to vacate her hostel by August 5.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Harsha Vardhana stated that an inquest proceeding is underway, and further investigation is ongoing.

Anjali’s tragic death has highlighted the need for systemic changes to support young aspirants and address the mental health challenges they face.

In the Kanjhawala hit-and-drag case, Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was added by the Delhi Police on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the IPC’s Sections 304, “culpable homicide not amounting to murder,” and 302 are used to charge “murder” in the case.

Sagar Preet Hooda, special CP, Law & Order (Zone II, Delhi), said, “After the collection of evidence, police have added IPC Section 302 in place of Section 304.”

Moreover, the murder section was included by the police based on the physical, oral, forensic, and other scientific evidence collected.

However, further investigation into the case is underway.

Earlier in the day, the Rohini Court granted accused Ashutosh bail on a Rs 50,000 bond. Rohini’s court imposed a condition on his departure, stating that he would not leave Delhi without the court’s permission.

Earlier on 12 January the Rohini court rejected Ashutosh Bhardwai’s bail plea because of the gravity and sensitivity of the allegations. The court said that the investigation against Ashutosh is still in its initial stages.

However, Anjali was killed in the early hours of the New Year after her scooter was hit by a car and she was dragged under the vehicle for 13 kilometers on the city’s roads.

In the Kanjhawala case, the Rohini court rejects Ashutosh Bhardwai’s bail plea on Thursday because of the gravity and sensitivity of the allegations.

The court said that the investigation against Ashutosh is still in the initial stages.

Meanwhile, the bail plea of Ashutosh was opposed by Delhi Police as during the investigation the accused tried to confuse the police.

Earlier in the day the bail plea of Ashutosh was reserved after hearing the submissions of Delhi police and defense counsel. After which Ashutosh’s lawyer said that Ashutosh was not present in the car at the time of the incident.

However, Ashutosh Bhardwaj’s counsel advocate Shipesh Chaudhary said when the incident took place his applicant was at his home. In this Ashutosh’s counsel submitted Ashutosh’s iPhone which records the live locations.

“The only allegations against him are under 212, 201, 120B Part, and these are bailable in nature,” Chaudhary said.

Chaudhary further said when the offense was committed Ashutosh was not in the car.

“Another accused Ankush is on bail,” Chaudhary said.

“Before the stage of charge, the document can’t be produced by the defense. The authenticity of this video can’t be established as these are without section 65B of the Evidence Act certificate,” Special public prosecutor (SPP) Atul Srivastava said.

SPP Srivastava also submitted, “We never said he (Ashutosh) was in the car. Our stand is that he provided his vehicle to a person who was not authorized to drive.”

“He did not inform the police regarding the accident for which he was under legal compulsion. He didn’t inform the police about the incident despite having knowledge,” SPP said.

However, in the early hours of New Year Anjali was killed after her scooty was hit by a car and for 13 kilometers was dragged under the vehicle on the city’s roads.

Earlier, Anjali’s maternal uncle claimed that her friend Nidhi is the eyewitness in the case and was also part of conspiracy in the matter.

“Nidhi surfaced all of a sudden after Anjali’s last rites were performed. Why is it that the thought of reporting the incident to the police or us never crossed her mind? She claimed she was scared at the time. Is she not scared anymore? There is a conspiracy and she is a part of it,” Anjali’s maternal uncle said.

Anjali’s maternal uncle further stated, “My niece did not have a drink. If she was drunk that night of the incident, as Nidhi has claimed, the post-mortem report would have mentioned it. So, either the post-mortem report is false or Nidhi lied.”

However, a total of 18 teams of Delhi Police are part of the ongoing probe in the Kanjhawala case.

A theft was reported on Monday from the house of Anjali Singh, who perished horribly on New Year’s Day after being dragged beneath a car for several kilometers after it struck her scooty.

An LCD TV was reportedly one of the things stolen from Anjali’s family’s home in Karan Vihar, according to the family members. In addition, they said Nidhi, a friend of the victim, was behind the theft.

Speaking to ANI, Anjali’s sister said on Monday morning, “Our neighbours first informed us about the theft around 7.30 am in the morning. When we came here, we found the lock to be broken. The LCD TV and other household items, stacked under the bed were missing. The television is new. It has been two months since we purchased it.”

Another family member asked, “Why was there no police yesterday in front of the house? Police had been there for the last 8 days but was yesterday no one was there. We feel, Nidhi is behind the theft.”

Police said that the investigation is ongoing. Police also reported that the five accused arrested in the Sultanpuri hit-and-run case have admitted that they were aware that the woman was trapped beneath their grey Maruti Suzuki Baleno but continued to drive out of fear.

According to an officer with knowledge of the situation, it was noted in the disclosure made by the accused, which is what led to the addition of section 304 of the IPC (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) to the case.

However, the accused’s statement to the police is not admissible in court. Amit Khanna, Deepak Khanna, Krishan, Mithun, and Manoj Mittal are the five accused who are now being held in police custody for four days. They have been arrested for a number of offences, including reckless driving on public property and culpable homicide that does not constitute murder.

According to the Delhi Police, Ashutosh and Ankush Khanna were involved in protecting the five accused, hence they were arrested two more times. Ashutosh was taken into custody from Budh Vihar in northwest Delhi while Ankush turned himself up at the Sultanpuri police station. Amit, Krishan, Mithun, and Manoj collected the car on December 31 from Ashutosh, according to the authorities. He attempted to aid them in getting away with the crime following the occurrence and provided false information to the police in an effort to sway the investigation. Anjali Kumari, the victim, and her friend Nidhi were riding a scooter back from a New Year’s Eve celebration early on January 1 when they were struck by a Maruti Suzuki Baleno.
While Anjali’s body got entangled in the car’s undercarriage as it dragged her for at least 14 kilometres, Nidhi slid to the side.

In the Kanjhawala case Nidhi, an eye-witness has not been arrested she has been just called to join the investigation by the Delhi Police on Friday.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Police refuted the reports of Nidhi’s arrest and said, “There are media reports that Nidhi (eyewitness) has been arrested by police. It is clarified that she has been called by the Police to join the investigation.”

Earlier on Tuesday the post-mortem reports of Anjali who was dragged under the car have come which revealed that no sexual assault happened and the cause of death is a vehicular accident.

“She was in a drunken state but insisted on driving the two-wheeler. After being hit by the car, she came under the car and got dragged with it. I was scared and ran away and returned home, didn’t tell anything to anyone. It is the fault of the girl who was driving in an inebriated state. I insisted that she shouldn’t drive. I told her ‘I am conscious, let me drive’. She didn’t trust me and trusted herself instead,” Nidhi claimed that Anjali was drunk while driving the scooty.

In the Kanjhawala horrific accident case, the sixth accused named Ashutosh has been arrested.

“In the Sultanpuri case, the sixth accused Ashutosh has been arrested who had given false information to the police. Further investigation is on,” the Special Commissioner of Police (Law & Order) Delhi Police Sagar Preet Hooda said.

According to the police, the car through which the victim was dragged was Ashutosh’s car and during interrogation, Ashutosh has given false information to the police.

Earlier, police arrested five accused named Deepak Khanna, Amit Khanna, Krishan, Mithun, and Manoj Mittal.

Moreover, for medical examination, all the accused were taken to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital on Thursday. 18 teams of Delhi Police are investigating the case.

“We are trying to file the charge sheet as early as possible. During the post-mortem, no evidence of sexual assault was found,” the Special CP said.

However, Anjali was killed in the early hours of New Year after her scooty was hit by a car and was dragged for over 12 kilometers.

The family of Anjali Singh, a 20-year-old who passed away in Delhi after being dragged under a car, reportedly received an undisclosed donation from Shah Rukh Khan’s non-profit organization, the Meer Foundation. “The sole provider of income was Anjali. The assistance is intended to assist the family, particularly the mother with her health concerns while also relieving Anjali’s siblings, “In the report, a source was cited.

Anjali’s Mother’s Health deteriorated

Anjali's mother has been taken to the hospital for the treatment. Doctor Bhupendra, close to the family, arrived to get him admitted to the hospital. Anjali's mother's health is continuously deteriorating. Dr. Bhupendra says that his test report has come in which many serious results have come out. Today she is being taken for dialysis. More updates are awaited

Nidhi Was Detained In A Drug Case

According to an FIR filed in December 2020, Nidhi was detained in Agra in connection with a Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, (1985), offense. Nidhi is currently free on bond, according to police sources. On December 6, 2020, Nidhi was detained and taken into custody at the Agra railway station for importing ganja (drugs) from Telangana via train. She was subsequently taken into custody. Along with Nidhi, two other lads, Sameer and Ravi, were also taken into custody.

Another Revelation

Anjali Singh’s friend Naveen revealed Nidhi and Anjali fought over money before leaving the hotel on New Year’s Eve.

“Both were partying there (hotel). Some other friends were also there. A little later, they started quarreling. Nidhi asked for her money, and Anjali asked for her keys. They then had a physical altercation,” said Naveen

“We separated them. I told Anjali to calm down. Nidhi went downstairs and created a scene. The hotel staff told us about it. Anjali went downstairs to calm her down. They quarreled downstairs. By the time we went there, they had left on a scooter,” Naveen added.

Swati Maliwal On Delhi Police Investigation

Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal expressed her dissatisfaction with the Delhi Police’s action on Thursday and demanded the case be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Talking to the media Swati Maliwal said Delhi Police is not conducting a fully unbiased investigation.

“I’m not satisfied with Delhi Police’s action. I recommend that this case be transferred to CBI. Delhi Police told us they’ve not recovered Nidhi’s phone till now. It’s very important evidence. It is beyond my understanding why it is not with the police till now?” Swati Maliwal said.

“Police still haven’t checked all CCTV footage from the 13 km stretch or recorded 164 (CrPC) statements of all eyewitnesses, section 302 not added. The first call came at 2.22 am about a woman being entangled in a car. But the police sprung into action only when they received a call at 4.15 am about a naked body,” the DCW chief stated.

The key developments in the Kanjhawala death case are listed here

The Kanjhawala accident case, in which Anjali Kumar, 20, was hit and dragged by a car for around 12 kilometers early on New Year’s Day, involved two more persons, according to the Delhi Police on Thursday.

2 more involved in the case, says police; ten vehicles couldn’t find a killer car

The Kanjhawala accident case, in which Anjali Kumar, 20, was hit and dragged by a car for around 12 kilometers early on New Year’s Day, involved two more persons, according to the Delhi Police on Thursday.

At least 10 vehicles, including PCR vans and night patrolling units, were pressed into service to track the grey Baleno on the tragic night of the Kanjhawala horror when 20-year-old Anjali was dragged to her death by a moving Baleno. However, the car could not be tracked due to dense fog, according to news agency PTI citing police sources. According to the complaint, the car dragged Anjali 12 kilometers from Sultanpuri to Kanjhawala while avoiding authorities by using side roads and tiny streets. Several contradictory statements have been made by those questioned by the police as the investigation is underway.

The family says Anjali never drank alcohol

The primary witness in the case, Nidhi, who was with Anjali when the accident occurred, asserted that Anjali was under the influence of alcohol that night and was coerced into driving the scooter. The assertion was denied by Anjali’s family, Anjali’s family refuted the claim and said they never heard of any Nidhi from Anjali. Anjali’s mother Reha Devi told reporters that Anjali never consumed alcohol and never came home drunk.

‘Nidhi and Anjali knew each other for 15 days, family says

Nidhi has now told the police that this was the first time they went out together on the night of the 31st. Nidhi said she had known Anjali only for 15 days. It has been found so far that Anjali and Nidhi went to a hotel to attend a party. A room was booked in the names of Anjali and Nidhi and their Aadhaar cards were given to the hotel authorities for booking the hotel. They were seen talking to seven men at the hotel party who have been interrogated by the police.

Anjali’s family doctor on Wednesday said Nidhi lied that Anjali was drunk and no trace of alcohol was found in her stomach in the autopsy report.

Anjali’s family, ‘questions why Nidhi emerged following the funeral rites’

Anjali’s family has expressed concern about Nidhi’s recklessness, questioning why she appeared shortly after Anjali’s last rites were done and leaving Anjali to be dragged by the car without calling the police or returning home right away. “If she was scared then, why isn’t she scared now? This was Nidhi’s conspiracy,” Anjali’s maternal uncle said.

The latest CCTV footage from outside Nidhi’s residence showed Nidhi returned home at around 2.30 am — soon after the accident.

Anjali had 40 wounds; brain matter was ‘missing’

A total of 40 “antemortem external injuries”—mostly lacerated wounds, contusions, and abrasions—are recorded in the post-mortem report. The “brain matter” was “missing,” according to the report, and the pleural cavity was “open with an exposition of both lungs.”

‘Anjali was stuck to the left wheel’

The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) reported on Wednesday that the 20-year-old woman who died in Delhi after being dragged by a car for approximately 12 kilometers was stuck to the left front wheel of the car.

It is reported that most of the blood stains were found behind the front left wheel and added that so far, there are no signs to indicate that the woman was inside the car.

Earlier on 2 January in case FIR no. 2/23 Sultanpuri Police Station PME was conducted.
Moreover, by blunt force, all the injuries are produced by vehicular accidents and dragging. No injury has been suggestive of sexual assault in Anjali’s PME.
