Discover her journey in preserving Kashmir’s culture through art.
</excerpt>

In the 115th episode of his popular radio program Mann Ki Baat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the artistry of Firdousa Bashir, a young calligrapher from Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir. PM Modi praised her dedication to promoting local culture through the intricate art of Islamic calligraphy, showcasing Kashmir’s cultural richness.

Firdousa Bashir’s Dream to Meet the Prime Minister

Following her unexpected mention, Firdousa expressed her excitement and joy, revealing her wish to meet PM Modi. “I would be very excited to meet PM Modi. This will also inspire our youth,” she shared. Family members, neighbors, and the local Sarpanch have expressed pride and happiness at Firdousa’s recognition.

She admitted, “I never thought PM Modi would mention me on Mann Ki Baat. I like this program because he appreciates everyone’s talent and inspires them to showcase their skills.”

Who is Firdousa Bashir? The Inspiring Story Behind the Art

Firdousa’s calligraphy journey began in her village, Kehribal, after completing her 12th grade. Rather than choosing a conventional path, she studied Islamic literature, which led her to the art of calligraphy. Inspired by a YouTube video, she pursued calligraphy on her own, overcoming initial doubts from her family. Her growing talent eventually won their support.

Today, Firdousa holds workshops and exhibitions to introduce local youth to this traditional art, reinforcing its value in modern Kashmiri culture. Her success serves as a beacon for aspiring artists in the region, proving that cultural heritage can find expression in contemporary art forms.

The Significance of Calligraphy in Kashmir’s Cultural Heritage

Calligraphy is more than just beautiful handwriting; it has roots in many cultures and traditions. Through the precise strokes of her pen, Firdousa connects Kashmir’s rich heritage with a modern artistic approach, inspiring young artists to preserve and appreciate this centuries-old art form.

What is Calligraphy?

The art of calligraphy involves creating beautiful, decorative handwriting, often with specialized tools such as nibs, broad-tip pens, and brush pens. It’s an accessible art that relies on basic strokes and deliberate practice, even for those without perfect handwriting. In Kashmir, calligraphy bridges past traditions with modern artistic expression, keeping the cultural legacy alive.

</excerpt>

Kashmir: The ongoing anti-terror operation in Anantnag district, Jammu and Kashmir, has seen the death toll rise to three after a civilian succumbed to injuries early Sunday morning, officials confirmed to TDG.

Abdul Rashid Dar, who sustained injuries from terrorist gunfire on Saturday, passed away in a Srinagar hospital. His death follows the earlier confirmation of two Army personnel who were martyred during the intense firefight in the Ahlan Gagarmandu forest area.

The encounter began on the evening of August 10, when a joint cordon and search operation by the Army and local police was launched in the remote Ahlan Gagarmandu forest area. This operation was triggered by intelligence reports suggesting the presence of terrorists in the high-altitude region, situated approximately 10,000 feet above sea level.

According to officials, the operation turned into a fierce battle when terrorists opened fire on the security forces. Six Army personnel and two civilians were injured during the confrontation. The two slain Army personnel have been identified as Havildar Dipak Kumar Yadav and Lance Naik Praveen Sharma. The injured soldiers were quickly transported to a nearby medical facility, but two succumbed to their injuries shortly after arrival.

In response to the escalating situation, additional reinforcements have been deployed to the area. The security forces are intensifying their efforts to locate and neutralize the terrorists, who remain at large despite the challenging terrain.

This incident is reminiscent of a similar operation in the Kokernag region last September, which resulted in the deaths of four security personnel, including Colonel Manpreet Singh and Major Ashish, along with Deputy SP Humayun Bhat. That operation also led to the neutralization of two terrorists, including a senior Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander.

Following a deadly encounter in Doda district on July 15, where four soldiers, including a captain, were martyred, security forces have heightened their operations in the Kokernag woods. It is suspected that the terrorists involved in the Anantnag encounter may have crossed over from Kishtwar district after escaping the confrontation in Doda.

On August 5, security agencies confirmed through both human and electronic intelligence that the terrorists responsible for the Doda region violence had infiltrated the Kapran-Garol area in south Kashmir. The ongoing operation, which began on the night of August 9-10, involved tracking these terrorists to the mountainous terrain east of Kapran.

A Srinagar-based defense spokesperson detailed that suspicious activity was detected around 2 p.m. on August 10. The terrorists responded with indiscriminate and reckless firing, leading to injuries among two Army personnel and two nearby civilians. The terror background of the injured civilians is currently under investigation.

The spokesperson also noted the challenging conditions faced by security forces due to the region’s altitude, dense undergrowth, and rugged terrain. Despite these obstacles, operations continue as forces methodically pursue the terrorists.

</excerpt>

Srinagar, Aug 1: In a significant action against drug trafficking, police on Thursday attached a commercial complex in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district, allegedly acquired through the illicit drug trade.

Bijbehara Police Station attached the commercial complex, valued at over Rs 2 crore, belonging to the late Abdul Rashid Dar of Tulkhan Bijbehara. “The property was identified as being acquired through the illicit drug trade, specifically the trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances,” the police stated.

The attached properties include a commercial building constructed at a prime location on National Highway (NHW-44) at Semthan Bijbehara, covering an area of 5 Kanal 12 Marla land under Survey No. 291 Min. The individual was involved in Case FIR No 210/2020 under Section 8/15-29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, registered at Bijbehara Police Station.

In September 2020, an underground room in the compound of the deceased Dar was discovered to contain a substantial quantity of contraband substances, specifically poppy straw (Fukki) packed in gunny bags and plastic barrels. The investigation revealed that the deceased had acquired this contraband from illegal sources and stored it for further illicit sale to local youth, thereby promoting drug addiction and illegal trade.

A total of 126 gunny bags weighing 2600 kg and 60 plastic barrels (1395 kg) of the contraband substance were recovered from the spot, the statement said.

This move is part of the ongoing efforts by the police to crack down on the drug trade in the region, aiming to dismantle networks and confiscate properties acquired through illicit activities.

</excerpt>

The sixth phase of Lok Sabha polling witnessed a historic voter turnout in the Anantnag-Rajouri parliamentary constituency, with approximately 54.8 percent of electors exercising their franchise. This surge in participation signifies a significant increase compared to the 9.70 percent turnout recorded in 2019.

Chief Electoral Officer Pandurang Kondbarao Pole lauded the remarkable engagement of first-time voters, women, and senior citizens, hailing it as a testament to the robustness of democracy in Jammu and Kashmir.

“With the conclusion of the Lok Sabha polls, J&K has recorded an unprecedented 58.11 percent polling across its five parliamentary constituencies, the highest in the past 35 years,” Pole declared.

Peaceful polling characterized the districts of Anantnag, Kulgam, Poonch, Shopian, and Rajouri. Even after the official closing time of 6 PM, voting persisted at certain polling stations due to the overwhelming turnout.

This surge in participation marks a new era of civic engagement in these districts. Unlike previous elections marred by boycott calls and intimidation, this year’s polls witnessed unwavering faith in the ballot, with active participation at every polling station.

Previously, the highest voter turnout since the onset of terrorism in J&K was recorded in 1996 at 50.02 percent. This year’s 54.8 percent turnout thus stands as the highest in the last 35 years.

Pole attributed this success to improved security, law and order, mobilization efforts by candidates and political parties, election awareness through SVEEP activities, and voters’ belief in the ballot for sustainable development.

Voting unfolded across 2,338 polling stations in the Anantnag parliamentary constituency, with live webcasting at each site. Early morning queues underscored the enthusiasm among voters, with the highest turnout seen in the Surankote assembly segment (68 percent) and the lowest in Kulgam (32 percent).

Elderly, women, and youth turned out in significant numbers, contributing to a peaceful election environment. The Chief Electoral Officer and senior officials oversaw the process, ensuring its smooth conduct throughout the day.

For the first time, the migrant community participated in large numbers, with over 26,000 Kashmiri migrant electors casting their votes at special polling stations in Jammu, Udhampur, and Delhi.

Pole expressed gratitude to all voters for their resilience in the face of weather challenges and commended the efforts of polling personnel, security forces, and officials involved in the election process.

This historic turnout marks a triumph of democratic spirit, showcasing voters’ commitment to shaping the future of their constituencies through active participation in the electoral process.
