Ministry of Information & Broadcasting takes action against ‘obscene’ content on OTT platforms

March 14, 2024, 12:43 pm

The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (I&B) has taken action, in coordination with various intermediaries, to block 18 OTT platforms publishing “obscene,” “vulgar,” and, in some instances, “pornographic content”.

19 websites, 10 apps (7 on the Google Play Store and 3 on the Apple App Store), and 57 social media accounts associated with these platforms have been disabled for public access in India, an official statement from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said on Thursday.

Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting Anurag Singh Thakur has repeatedly emphasized the responsibility of the platforms to not propagate obscenity, vulgarity and abuse under the guise of ‘creative expression’. On March 12, Thakur announced that 18 OTT platforms publishing obscene and vulgar content had been taken down, the release said.

The statement further added that the recent decision was taken under the provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000, in consultation with other ministries of the Government of India, and domain experts specializing in media and entertainment, women’s rights, and child rights.

“A significant portion of the content hosted on these platforms was found to be obscene, vulgar, and portrayed women in a demeaning manner. It depicted nudity and sexual acts in various inappropriate contexts, such as relationships between teachers and students, incestuous family relationships, etc. The content included sexual innuendos and, in some instances, prolonged segments of pornographic and sexually explicit scenes devoid of any thematic or societal relevance,” the statement added.

The content was determined to be prima facie in violation of Sections 67 and 67A of the IT Act, Section 292 of the IPC, and Section 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986, the release said.

One of the OTT apps amassed more than 1 crore downloads, while two others had over 50 lakh downloads on the Google Play Store. Additionally, these OTT platforms extensively utilize social media to disseminate trailers, specific scenes, and external links aimed at attracting audiences to their websites and apps. The social media accounts of the concerned OTT platforms had a cumulative followership of over 32 lakh users, it said.
The Ministry of I&B consistently conducts sensitization efforts with OTT platforms and their self-regulatory bodies established under the IT Rules, 2021 through meetings, webinars, workshops, etc, the statement said.

The Government of India remains committed to fostering the growth and development of the OTT industry. Several measures have been undertaken in this regard, including the introduction of the Inaugural OTT Award for Web Series at the 54th International Film Festival of India, collaboration with OTT platforms in the media and entertainment sector, and the establishment of a light touch regulatory framework with an emphasis on self-regulation under the IT Rules, 2021, the release said.

People are ‘wrong’ and ‘sensationalists’, says Abhishek Bachchan

November 11, 2022, 10:16 am

With the second season of the hit series Breathe: Into the Shadows, which stars actor Abhishek Bachchan, it is back on Amazon Prime Video.

Meanwhile, the series talks about mental health, after which a few fans were upset about it.

In a recent interview, Abhishek talked about the series and people who criticized the series and said during the prepartion of the script, four-five doctors were involved to address this sensitive issue.

“I completely disagree. People who have said that have no idea what they are talking about. There were four-five doctors that worked on the script. Mayank’s brother-in-law is a psychiatrist who works particularly on this disorder. That is of paramount importance to us, to be sensitive to mental health, especially to people with similar disorders,” Abhishek Bachchan said.

Talking about the issue, Abhishek said, “This is just the part of the story and the character. It wasn’t a show to sensitize people about this and it was never the prime focus. It is extremely unfair. If we have to nitpick, I can find a problem with anything. You have to understand what the intention of the show is.”

Abhishek further added that people who find the series problematic by showing mental health issues are ‘wrong’ and ‘sensationalists’.

Moreover, the series is directed by Mayank Sharma, in which once again Abhishek returns as Dr Avinash Sabharwal, who is suffering from dissociative identity disorder and kills people.

Besides Abhishek Bachchan, the series also stars Amit Sadh and Saiyami Kher.

However, talking about the review done by one of the media organizations says, “The actors do well with what they are given. Amit Sadh is underrated, to say the least, and he is ever-dependent, like Kabir Sawant. Abhishek Bachchan does well to portray the vulnerability and guilt of Avinash but is found lacking while trying to bring out the menace and rage of J. A good element of this season is Avinash’s inner turmoil as he wonders if he is turning more into J and less of himself. Abhishek nailed that dilemma quite well. Nithya Menen and Saiyami Kher have been given too little to work with, which is a shame as they had both been quite good in the previous season. Naveen Kasturia leaves a mark though.”

Fresh FIR filed by Mumbai Police against ‘Tandav’ makers

January 21, 2021, 2:10 am

The Mumbai Police on Wednesday filed a fresh FIR against the makers of the web series, Tandav. The show, which streams on OTT platform Amazon Prime Video, had received criticism, particularly from the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) for allegedly showing members of one community in poor light.

The complaint was filed by BJP MLA Ram Kadam. The FIR which is lodged at the Ghatkopar Police Station, has been filed against Ali Abbas Zafar, Himanshu Mehra, Aparna Purohit (of Amazon Prime), Gaurav Solanki and Amit Agrawal. The sections filed against them include 153(A), 295 (A) and 505 (2). Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan, the lead actor, too has been booked.

Meanwhile a four member UP Police team today visited the Mumbai Police Commissioners office to seek permission to question the above mentioned people associated with Tandav. This after another FIR was filed in UP over the same row. The makers of Tandav on Tuesday agreed to implement changes to their controversial webseries after several FIRs were filed against the political drama for alleged inappropriate depiction of Hindu deities and calls for its ban.

The day also saw many political leaders expressing the need for close monitoring of OTT platforms besides protests at some places with the demonstrators burning effigies of series director Ali Abbas Zafar among others. Tandav, a nine-episode political thriller starring Bollywood A-listers Saif Ali Khan, Dimple Kapadia and Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub, started streaming on Amazon Prime Video on Friday but the show ran into trouble over its depiction of Hindu deities.

Taking cognisance of complaints over the web series, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had on Sunday sought an explanation from Amazon Prime Video on the issue. On Monday, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s media advisor Shalabhmani Tripathi said the makers of “Tandav” have to pay the price for hurting religious sentiments.

He said four members of the UP police have left for Mumbai for a detailed probe into the case after an FIR was lodged against the show at the Hazratganj police station. At least three FIRs have been lodged against the makers and artists of “Tandav” in Uttar Pradesh – at Lucknow, Greater Noida and Shahjahanpur – for alleged inappropriate depiction of UP Police personnel, deities, and adverse portrayal of a character playing Prime Minister in the show.

In their second apology statement in two days, the show’s team also thanked the Ministry of Information Broadcasting for its “guidance & support” in the matter. At the centre of the row is a scene with Zeeshan Ayyub, in the role of college student Shiva, playing god Mahadev in a theatre production. As the controversy escalated, the show makers tried to defuse the situation by announcing their decision to remove the controversial portion from the show.

This is one of the several complaints filed against ‘Tandav’ in several parts of the country. A criminal complaint has been filed before a Delhi court seeking action against the makers of the web series.
