Reliance Jio Platforms Ltd has inked a deal with SpaceX to launch Starlink’s broadband internet services in India. The partnership is conditional on SpaceX receiving approval from the regulators to sell Starlink in the nation. This comes after Bharti Airtel recently partnered with SpaceX to offer similar services.

Enhancing India’s Digital Infrastructure

Mathew Oommen, Group CEO of Reliance Jio, highlighted the disruptive nature of the collaboration. Our collaboration with SpaceX to bring Starlink to India strengthens our commitment and marks a transformative step toward seamless broadband connectivity for all. By integrating Starlink into Jio’s broadband ecosystem, we are expanding our reach and enhancing the reliability and accessibility of high-speed broadband in this AI-driven era, empowering communities and businesses across the country,” Oommen said.

The deal enables Jio and SpaceX to capitalize on synergies between their offerings. Jio will sell Starlink solutions via its retail outlets and website, making the satellite-based broadband service more broadly available.

Broadening High-Speed Internet Throughout India

The collaboration seeks to improve broadband penetration throughout India, including remote and rural areas. Jio, the largest mobile operator globally in terms of data traffic, and Starlink, the foremost low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation operator, will use their synergies to provide quick and efficient internet services.

Jio will not just sell Starlink hardware but will also establish customer support facilities for installation and activation. The effort is part of Jio’s vision to ensure smooth internet availability to businesses, small and medium enterprises, and communities in India.

Starlink Supplements Jio AirFiber and Jio Fiber

Starlink will supplement JioAirFiber and JioFiber by providing connectivity to hard-to-reach areas. The alliance facilitates a rapid and cost-effective roll-out of high-speed internet offerings.

Jio and SpaceX are also exploring other regions of collaboration for further developing the digital ecosystem in India.

“We applaud Jio’s commitment to advancing India’s connectivity. We are looking forward to working with Jio and receiving authorisation from the Government of India to provide more people, organizations and businesses with access to Starlink’s high-speed internet services,” President and COO at SpaceX Shotwell said.

This alliance reflects Jio’s vision to deliver strong, future-proof connectivity solutions, connecting India and bridging the digital divide.

</excerpt>

Airtel customers across India are facing a widespread service disruption, with many reporting issues with both mobile and broadband connectivity. On Thursday (December 26), users took to social media to highlight problems, particularly mobile internet disruptions, which made up 39% of complaints. Another 39% reported a complete loss of Airtel services, while 22% experienced no signal at all. The outage primarily affected users in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

Businesses relying on Airtel’s broadband services were also impacted, with employees working from home struggling to join virtual meetings or access cloud-based resources. Streaming services and online lessons were interrupted for households, causing further inconvenience.

Customers voiced frustration on social media, citing issues like dropped calls, no internet access, and total service blackouts. While the disruption affected daily routines, Airtel has yet to issue an official statement on the cause.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced a one-month extension for telecommunications operators to comply with a new traceability requirement for commercial messages, including one-time passwords (OTPs). The new deadline is set for December 1. This initiative aims to combat spam and phishing activities. Messages that fail to meet the traceability rules will be blocked starting on this date, instead of the previous deadline of November 1.

Concerns from Major Telecom Operators

Major telecom operators, including Airtel, Vodafone-Idea, and Reliance Jio, expressed concerns about potential disruptions caused by blocking messages that do not comply with the new rules. They highlighted that many telemarketers and businesses, especially banks, may not be adequately prepared for these changes.

Gradual Implementation Process

To alleviate these concerns, TRAI has introduced a phased implementation approach. From now until November 30, operators will issue daily warnings to entities that do not meet the chain declaration requirements. After December 1, messages from these non-compliant entities will be blocked.

Previous Extensions and Ongoing Efforts

This extension marks the second time TRAI has granted additional time to the industry. Previously, the deadline for whitelisting messages containing URLs and over-the-top (OTT) links was pushed to October 1.

TRAI’s ongoing efforts to reduce spam and enhance security in the telecom sector include blacklisting non-compliant entities, disconnecting mobile numbers, and migrating telemarketing calls to a blockchain-based platform for stricter monitoring.

In July, major telecom operators like Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea experienced significant customer losses after increasing their mobile service prices. Meanwhile, government-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) added new subscribers, even as the overall telecom user base in India saw a slight decline.

Jio lost 750,000 customers, bringing its total to 475.76 million, while Airtel suffered the largest drop of 1.69 million, reducing its base to 387.32 million. Vi also lost 1.41 million customers, resulting in a user base of 215.88 million. In contrast, BSNL, which did not hike its tariffs, gained 2.93 million new users, raising its customer base to 88.51 million.

This shift caused market shares to adjust, with Jio’s share decreasing to 40.68%, Airtel’s to 33.12%, and Vi’s to 18.46%. Conversely, BSNL’s market share increased from 7.33% to 7.59%.

In the high-value 4G and 5G segment, Airtel was the only private operator to gain ground, adding 2.56 million users in July. Jio lost 760,000 4G/5G customers, while Vi’s 3G/4G base dropped by 1.1 million. Both Vi and BSNL have yet to offer 5G services, though BSNL recently launched 4G in select areas.

BSNL also saw a boost in active users, gaining 2.91 million to reach a total of 49.49 million, while Jio, Airtel, and Vi lost 210,000, 1.17 million, and 3.03 million active users, respectively.

The total telecom subscriber base in India slightly declined to 1,205.17 million in July from 1,205.64 million in June.

In the fixed-line sector, which grew by around 1% to 35.56 million, Jio led by adding over 480,000 new subscribers, followed by Airtel with 136,000. BSNL, however, lost 134,000 fixed-line customers. The broadband user base also grew, increasing to 946.19 million by the end of July from 940.75 million in June.

As of this report, Jio has not issued an official statement regarding the cause of the outage or when services will be fully restored. The exact reason for the network disruption remains unclear, though users are hoping for a swift resolution.

In the meantime, Jio users continue to flood social media with complaints, updates, and humorous takes on the unexpected network failure, while eagerly awaiting the return of normal service.

</excerpt>

Journalist and writer Neelesh Misra took to X (formerly Twitter) on Friday to criticize Airtel for persistently harassing his 86-year-old father over a phone bill for his late mother. Misra, based in Lucknow, revealed that despite his mother’s phone service being suspended immediately after her death last September, Airtel continues to call his father every few days demanding payment.

Misra expressed his frustration on X, urging Airtel to update their records to avoid further distress to his father. “Dear @airtelindia, stop harassing my 86-year-old father with constant calls about my late mother’s phone bill. Her service was suspended immediately after her passing,” Misra wrote. He added, “Your last call was two days ago. He receives calls every few days. Imagine the trauma of repeatedly explaining that his wife is no more. Why can’t your records be updated?”

In response to Misra’s post, Airtel apologized and confirmed that they had updated the account records to ensure no further calls would be made regarding the bill. “We understand how challenging this situation must be for you and your family, Neelesh. Please accept our sincere apologies. We are addressing the issue and working to improve your experience with us,” Airtel said.

The post garnered various reactions, with users commenting on the inefficiencies of customer service. One user, Kumar Gaurav, noted, “The lack of communication between their systems is why cancellations and updates take so long.” Another user, Sanwali Sharma, criticized customer service across companies, stating, “Customer service in India is a joke. It should be renamed customer harassment.”

</excerpt>

Union Minister for Communication and Development of the North East, Jyotiraditya Scindia, announced that BSNL will launch its 4G network this October and will soon follow with 5G services. Speaking at the India News event organised by The Sunday Guardian Foundation, he underscored India’s remarkable economic ascent, pointing out that the country has advanced from the 11th to the 5th position among the world’s largest economies.
Scindia highlighted the ongoing efforts of his ministry. He expressed optimism about India’s advancements in the telecom sector, noting the country’s significant progress from being a follower in 4G to becoming a leader in 6G. “India is transitioning from being a follower in 4G, keeping pace with 5G, to leading in 6G. This growth is evident across all sectors,” he remarked.
Addressing the price hikes by telecom giants like Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone, Scindia noted that India offers the most affordable internet globally. The cost of 1 GB has decreased significantly from Rs 270 in 2014 to just Rs 9 in 2024. Similarly, voice call costs have dropped from 51 paise per minute in 2014 to just 3 paise per minute this year. The capital expenditure for 5G is set at Rs. 4,26 crore, and the recent tariff increases are minimal compared to global standards. Regarding 5G, Scindia revealed that 17 crore customers have adopted the new technology, with 4.5 lakh transmission systems installed across the country.
The deployment of 19 lakh base transceiver stations (BTS) for 4G highlights the extensive infrastructure in place. Quality of service remains a top priority, and Scindia emphasised the importance of India achieving self-reliance in telecommunications, citing the Tejas network as a successful example. Additionally, the number of BSNL towers is set to expand to 80,000 by October.
He added that the BSNL 4G network will be installed only when we produce our 4G stack in our country and make the whole world aware that India has become a leader in the telecom sector. Regarding BSNL, we discussed that BSNL has now expanded its network to 4G. “We are currently in the process of installing 4G towers as well as expanding to 5G networks, which has caused some delays. We faced two options: either purchase telecom equipment from international companies, spending a significant amount of Indian rupees in foreign currency, or rely completely on this imported telecom equipment for our communication network. This reliance is not only a commercial risk but also a security risk.

</excerpt>

The government has rebutted claims suggesting it permitted Reliance Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea to independently announce tariff hikes without oversight. Recently, all three telecom companies raised the prices of their prepaid and postpaid plans effective from July 3, 2024.

According to an official press release, the regulatory body clarified that the current mobile services market, comprising three private sector players and one public sector player, operates under market dynamics of supply and demand. The rates for telecommunications services, it stated, are determined by market forces within the framework established by the independent regulator, TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India).

“The Government refrains from intervening in free market decisions, as this falls within the purview of TRAI, and tariffs are subject to forbearance,” the release affirmed. “Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) notify TRAI of any changes in mobile service tariffs, which TRAI monitors to ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines.”

Highlighting recent developments, the government emphasized that TSPs had increased mobile service prices after a span of over two years. It also noted substantial investments by some TSPs in rolling out 5G services nationwide, resulting in a significant rise in median mobile speeds to approximately 100 Mbps and an improvement in India’s international ranking from 111 in October 2022 to 15 presently.

“In safeguarding subscriber interests and fostering the systematic growth of the telecom sector, including investments in advanced technologies such as 5G, 6G, IoT/M2M for Industry 4.0, maintaining the financial viability of the sector is crucial,” TRAI asserted.

</excerpt>

Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea (Vi) are set to compete for a share of the 5G spectrum valued at Rs 96,317.65 crore. As per sources from the telecom department cited in an Economic Times report, spectrum auctions are slated for the next auction round, commencing on June 6. Initially scheduled for May 20, the auction date was postponed due to general elections. The telecom department received three auction applications from India’s private telecom operators by the application deadline.

Industry experts and analysts anticipate the forthcoming spectrum sale to be subdued, as India’s leading telecom companies already possess sufficient 5G airwaves for their existing requirements. Additionally, no other company besides the three telecoms is reported to have applied for spectrum this time. In the previous auction conducted in June 2022, an Adani group company emerged as a surprise bidder.

Which spectrum bands are up for auction?

The auction will include airwaves across eight key bands: 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz, 2500 MHz, 3300 MHz, and 26 GHz.

What are Airtel, Vodafone-Idea, and Reliance Jio expected to bid for?

Industry experts anticipate that Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) will engage in selective bidding, focusing primarily on renewing their existing licenses in specific circles. Airtel needs to renew spectrum in J&K, Odisha, Bihar, UP (East), West Bengal, and Assam, while Vi requires renewals in West Bengal and UP West circles. Estimates suggest that Airtel and Vi may bid only for renewals valued at around Rs 4,200 crore and Rs 1,950 crore, respectively. In contrast, Reliance Jio is not under pressure to renew any licenses this year.

Important Auction Details: Dates and Further Information

Key Auction Details:

– Spectrum licenses will be valid for 20 years, with payments spread over 20 annual installments.

– Successful bidders have the option to surrender the spectrum after a minimum of 10 years.

– Financial and performance bank guarantees are not compulsory for participation.

– Auctioned airwaves will be exempt from Spectrum Usage Charges (SUC) following recent telecom reforms.

– Applicant details will be published by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) by May 10.

Application withdrawal deadline: May 17
Final bidder list expected: May 20

Airtel has announced that it will start the 5G network in India by the end of August. The telecom giant has signed 5G network agreements with Ericsson, Nokia, and Samsung to start 5G deployment in August 2022. Airtel will be the first telecom giant to roll out 5G services in India.

The company had a long association with Ericsson and Nokia but Samsung has recently been added to the list. Airtel was a part of the spectrum auction conducted by the Department of Telecommunications. In which the telecom giant bid for a 19867.8 MHz spectrum in 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 3300 MHz, and 26 GHz frequencies.

Talking about the launch of 5G services in India, Gopal Vittal, MD & CEO, Airtel said, “We are pleased to announce that Airtel will launch 5G services in August. Our network agreements have been finalized and Airtel will work with the best technology.”

Airtel is set to become the first among three telecom operators in India to test 5G networks. The telecom company conducted multiple trials at several locations with multiple partners. The company also showcased India’s first 5G experience on the live 4G network in Hyderabad.

Moreover, Airtel also conducted India’s first rural 5G trial and also tested the first cloud gaming experience on 5G for the successful deployment of India’s first captive private network on the trial spectrum.

Meanwhile, about 71 percent of the 5G spectrum was sold in the recently concluded 5G spectrum auction. After the completion of the process, Telecom Minister Ashwini said that out of the total spectrum put up for auction, 71% spectrum has been sold.

However, billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Jio was at the top of the bidders to further cement its leadership position, the report said. Reliance Jio has purchased a total of 24,740Mhz spectrum. Reliance has placed bids for 700Mhz, 800Mhz, 1800Mhz, 3300Mhz, and 26Ghz spectrum.
