Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury Accuses Kolkata Police of House Arrest and Bribery in Doctor’s Death Case

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the West Bengal Congress president, visited the home of the deceased doctor and spoke with her parents. Chowdhury claimed that the police had placed the doctor’s parents under “house arrest” after their daughter was raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

He further alleged that the police had offered the victim’s father money to expedite the cremation of her body. Chowdhury said, “I visited the family and spoke with them for a long time. The police have confined the family to their house, citing various reasons. They have barricaded the area, and even the CISF is unaware of this.”

According to Chowdhury, the Kolkata Police, acting on state government orders, had suggested that the father quickly cremate his daughter’s body in exchange for money.

The 31-year-old post-graduate trainee doctor’s body was discovered on August 9 in the seminar room of the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Since then, junior doctors have been on a cease-work protest, demanding justice for the victim and stronger security at medical facilities.

When Chowdhury attempted to meet with the protesting junior doctors at the hospital, he was stopped by the police. He commented, “I went there as a common citizen, not as a political leader, to show my support. However, the police prevented me from meeting them. If they had acted this swiftly earlier, our colleague might not have suffered this fate.”

The incident, which involved the sexual assault and murder of the post-graduate trainee on August 9, has sparked widespread outrage.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury condemned the state administration’s response, accusing it of indecision and failing to maintain law and order. “The state government should take action but remains in a dilemma. The law and order situation is worsening. The state government is not capable and seems intent on helping the accused,” Chowdhury said.

Renuka Chowdhury also expressed her concerns, stating that such incidents should never occur, and emphasizing the need for ensuring the safety of doctors. “This shouldn’t have happened. If a doctor is not safe while performing their duties inside a hospital, it will lead to protests. The expectations of common people should not be shattered. I stand with the doctors,” she said. Chowdhury added that Mamata Banerjee has promised a CBI inquiry if the culprits are not apprehended by Sunday.

On Tuesday, the Calcutta High Court ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the case, directing the Kolkata Police to immediately hand over all relevant documents to the CBI. The decision came as the court considered several Public Interest Litigations (PILs) related to the incident.

The case has also triggered controversy regarding administrative appointments. The Calcutta High Court has asked the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandip Ghosh, to submit a leave application after his recent appointment as principal of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, which led to protests.

The death of the trainee doctor has shocked the state, with an investigation confirming that she was raped and murdered. The deceased’s body bore signs of a struggle, including scratch marks, and her family has alleged foul play, insisting that she was sexually assaulted and killed.

Adhir Chowdhury disagrees on EC selection; Gyanesh Kumar, Sukhbir Sandhu to be new EC’s

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, a Congress leader in the Lok Sabha, voiced objections on Thursday regarding the government’s choices for Election Commissioner positions, following the recent departure of EC Arun Goel, which resulted in two vacancies in the commission.

The selection committee, comprising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Law Minister Arjun Meghwal, and the Leader of the Opposition, convened this morning to discuss candidates for the vacant election commissioner roles.

After the committee meeting, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury expressed concerns about the selection process, alleging flaws. He remarked, “They (government) have the majority (in the committee that appoints election commissioners).

Earlier, they had given me 212 names, but 10 minutes before the appointment they again gave me just six names. I know that the CJI isn’t there, government has made such a law that the CJI doesn’t interfere and the Central govt can choose a favourable name. I am not saying that it’s arbitrary but the procedure that is being followed has some lacunae.”

Sources suggest that the selection committee eventually settled on two candidates, retired IAS officers Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, who will join Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar on the commission.

Gyanesh Kumar retired as secretary of the cooperation ministry in February, while Sukhbir Singh Sandhu served as the former Chief Secretary of the Government of Uttarakhand.

On December 12, the Rajya Sabha passed a bill to regulate the appointment and service terms of the Chief Election Commissioner and election commissioners, replacing the Election Commission (Conditions of Service of Election Commissioners and Transaction of Business) Act, 1991.

According to the Bill, the President will appoint the CEC and ECs upon the recommendation of a Selection Committee, consisting of the Prime Minister, a Union Cabinet Minister, and the Leader of the Opposition or the leader of the largest opposition party in the Lok Sabha.

On March 9, Election Commissioner Arun Goel resigned from the post, and his resignation was accepted by the President.

The primary responsibility of the newly appointed election commissioner will be to ensure the successful conduct of the Lok Sabha polls scheduled for April-May this year

Despite Congress invitation denial, Vikramaditya Singh attends Pran Pratishtha ceremony

Despite the Congress party’s refusal of the invitation to the Pran Pratishtha ceremony of Shri Ram Lalla in Ayodhya, Minister and party leader Vikramaditya Singh from Himachal Pradesh attended the grand event at the Ram Mandir. Himachal Pradesh PWD minister Vikramaditya Singh arrived in Ayodhya to witness the ceremony.

Earlier, Himachal Pradesh, under Congress rule, became the sole state to declare a half-day for all state government employees. The Congress had declined the invitation, referring to it as a ‘BJP/RSS event,’ with senior leaders like Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury opting not to attend.

Congres leaders defend decision to skip ‘Pran Pratishtha’ ceremony

The Congress party has decided not to participate in the ‘Pran Pratistha’ ceremony of the Ram Temple scheduled for January 22, labeling it as an event organized by the RSS and BJP. In response, leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have criticized the Congress, describing it as “unfortunate, painful, and shameful.”

The Congress, declaring the Ayodhya Ram Temple inauguration as a “political project” of the BJP and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, announced its decision to skip the grand ceremony on Wednesday.

BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad expressed disappointment, stating, “It is very unfortunate, painful, and shameful… They had always opposed Ram Janmabhoomi… The Congress Party had ruled the country, yet where has it reduced itself to today?”

Another BJP MP, Sudhanshu Trivedi, accused the Congress of boycotting various events in the past, including the inauguration of the new Parliament building and the G20 Summit. He emphasized the public’s disapproval of the Congress party and its diminishing influence.

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya highlighted that the Congress’s refusal to attend indicates its opposition to Lord Ram and clarified that the invitation came from the Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, not the government or the BJP.

Champat Rai, the secretary of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra, acknowledged that several invited individuals are not attending, citing various reasons.

In contrast, former litigant Iqbal Ansari expressed his intent to attend the ceremony, emphasizing the personal nature of the decision. Union Minister Giriraj Singh accused the Congress of lacking the “moral strength” to go to Ayodhya and labeled them as “seasonal Hindus.”

Union Minister Smriti Irani accused the Congress and the INDIA bloc of having an anti-Sanatana mindset, citing their historical opposition to Lord Ram. Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah clarified that the Congress is not against Lord Ram but is opposing the political manipulation of the issue by the BJP.

Senior Congress leaders, including Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, officially declined the invitation, citing the event as an “RSS/BJP event” and emphasizing their respect for the sentiments of those who revere Lord Ram.

Preparations are underway for the ‘Pran Pratishtha’ ceremony, scheduled for January 22, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to attend the installation of the Ram Lalla idol at the grand temple. The ceremony is planned over seven days, commencing on January 16.

Kejriwal received letter asking him to reserve dates for Ram Mandir inauguration: AAP sources

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal received a letter a few days ago advising him to block his dates as a formal invitation for the ceremony, along with details, will follow. The Pran Pratishtha of Ram Lalla at the Ayodhya temple is in a few weeks, according to party sources. However, according to party sources, no official invitation has been sent out since. Concurrently, the Congress declined an invitation to Lord Ram Lalla’s “Pran Pratistha” ceremony, which is set for later this month in Ayodhya, accusing the Ram Temple inauguration of being an event organized by the BJP and RSS earlier in the day.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury disparages Centre over Andhra train accident: “Where are your anti-collision devices”

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, a former Rail Minister and leader of the Congress party, attacked the Central government for failing to use anti-collision devices in the wake of the train disaster in Andhra Pradesh. After two trains collided in Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh, leaving thirteen people dead, as many as thirty-three trains have been canceled and six more rescheduled as of right now, East Coast Railway officials announced on Monday.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said “In spite of hue and cry being made by this government and railways ministry across the nation that they are doing something new and innovative, within a span of 5 months only, 2 rail collisions took place in India, one in Balasore and one in Andhra Pradesh. Meanwhile, one derailment in Buxar, Bihar also took the lives of people. These incidents have debunked the high promises made by the government.”

In the Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh, on Sunday evening, a Visakhapatnam-Ragada passenger train collided with another Visakhapatnam-Ragada train that was traveling along the same route, resulting in at least 13 fatalities and multiple injuries when coaches derailed. According to the Divisional Railway Manager, the accident involved three coaches. Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Women Reservation Bill:”Bill was initiated by UPA”

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury claimed that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and Sonia Gandhi were the ones who first demanded the Women Reservation Bill after the Cabinet approved it.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury told “We want the Women’s Reservation Bill to be brought and passed as soon as possible. The demand for the Women’s Reservation Bill was initiated by UPA and our leader Sonia Gandhi. It took so long, but we will be happy if this is introduced.”

According to sources, the Women’s Reservation Bill was approved by the Union Cabinet on Monday. The Union Cabinet meeting took place in Delhi’s Parliament House Annexe. According to Congressman Ranjeet Ranjan, the BJP only paid attention to the Women Reservation Bill right before the elections.

“See, this is Congress’s bill. We introduced it on March 9, 2010. BJP has been in power for more than 9 years, why did you remember the women reservation bill just before the elections? Protect democracy, Kharge urges Dhankhar in RS over Ranjan’s suspension

Mallikarjun Kharge, the Rajya Sabha leader, defended party colleague Lok Sabha whip Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Friday, alleging that he just stated “Nirav Modi and Nirav means “shaant” (quiet in Hindi).”

“He only said Nirav Modi. Nirav means ’shaant’ (quiet), silent and for that he was suspended?” Kharge told Rajya Sabha Chairman Dhankhar.

“He has been suspended on a flimsy ground… I am pleading with the vice president and the Chairman of the House that you have to protect the democracy as he (Adhir) is in the public accounts committee, business advisory committee too and the CBC selection. He has been deprived of all these institutions and if he is suspended, it’s not good,” Kharge further added.

Chowdhury was suspended from the House while the privileges committee investigated his behavior. On Thursday evening, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi submitted the resolution for Chowdhury’s suspension after the Congress politician repeatedly disturbed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s response to the no-confidence motion debate.

The Lok Sabha was adjourned until 12 p.m. on Friday due to opposition demonstrations over Chowdhury’s suspension. As soon as the House convened, Congress deputy leader Gaurav Gogoi brought up Chowdhury’s suspension from the House for “repeated misconduct” on Thursday evening.

A few Congress members stood up and were heard addressing Speaker Om Birla that Chowdhury had always cooperated with him. The Speaker convened Question Hour, but it was adjourned within a minute of the House convening for the day. Parliament’s Monsoon session, which began on July 20, closes on Friday.

Revise salary of vector-borne disease control personnel, Adhir Ranjan writes to Mamata Banerjee

Congress Lok Sabha MP, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, on Friday wrote a letter to West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, requesting her to revise the salary of vector-borne disease control persons in West Bengal. He requested to raise the the salary to Rs 15,000.

“In view of the strenuous nature of work. May I please request you that their salary be revised to Rs. 15,000 per month so that they can have a decent living,” the letter of Congress MP reads.

“Presently, these village resource persons have been assigned the job of monitoring and reporting the vector-borne diseases in the State of West Bengal. The total strength of the village resource persons is 25,000. They are paid a meagre sum of Rs 5,250 only per month. They have not received the wages @ Rs. 5250 for the last three months and fifteen days even to date. The salary may please be released as soon as possible,” he added.

Stressing the role of Vector Borne Diseases Control persons, Chowdhary said, “As you are aware, the Vector Borne Diseases Control persons, though a small functionary, play a very important role in the development of the State. They report the progress and status of all the important social sector schemes like MNREGA, PMAY-G etc.”
