</excerpt>

A recent report by Ask Capital projects that India is on track to become a USD 1 trillion digital economy by 2028, fueled by government digital initiatives, widespread internet penetration, and the rollout of 4G and 5G services. This transformation is reshaping India’s financial and economic landscape, positioning the country as a global leader in real-time payments.

India’s digital economy, which accounted for 4.5% of the country’s GDP in 2014, is projected to contribute 20% by 2026. The digital transformation is propelled by innovations like Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and affordable data services, enabling cashless transactions and online purchases across finance, education, healthcare, and e-commerce.

Digital Payments Surge

Between 2017 and 2023, retail digital payments grew by 50.8%. UPI is expected to drive 90% of total retail digital payments in India by 2027. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is also preparing to launch the Unified Lending Interface (ULI) to simplify credit access for small and rural borrowers.

Impact of Government Initiatives

Government initiatives like Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) and the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme have enhanced financial inclusion, while healthcare programs like Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) and e-Sanjeevani are advancing digital health services. Education has also seen a digital shift, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, with schools adopting online learning.

Rapid Growth in Internet and Mobile Users

E-Commerce and Rural Digital Payments

The e-commerce sector continues to drive digital growth, with increasing digital payment transactions in rural areas. The report estimates that digital payments in India will grow to USD 10 trillion by 2026, further solidifying India’s path toward becoming a USD 1 trillion digital economy by 2028.

</excerpt>

India is the second largest consumer of internet in the world. Now a recent survey has stated that India experienced a staggering increase in 5G subscribers, soaring from 10 million in 2022 to 119 million by the end of last year. This remarkable growth reflects the swift adoption and deployment of 5G technology across the nation, particularly under the digital India policy.

According to the Ericsson Mobility Report, Communications Service Providers (CSPs) worldwide are increasingly utilizing 5G networks to offer Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) services. Out of 310 CSPs surveyed, 241 confirmed they provided 5G-based FWA services as of April 2024, indicating a 29% increase in CSPs embracing FWA services from 2022 to 2023.

Globally, network providers are primarily using 5G networks to deliver Enhanced Mobile Broadband and FWA. However, the transition to standalone 5G networks remains limited, with only 50 out of 300 CSPs globally implementing this advanced technology, suggesting that many providers have yet to fully exploit the full potential of 5G.

Research predicts nearly 5.6 billion users by 2029

Researchers predict a significant increase in 5G users, estimating around 5.6 billion users by the end of 2029, which would account for 60% of all mobile subscriptions. North America is expected to achieve high 5G penetration during this period. In India, 5G subscribers are projected to surge from the current 119 million to 840 million in the next five years.

The Ericsson report also highlights a substantial rise in data consumption per smartphone in India, with average usage expected to grow from 29GB per month to 68GB per month by the end of 2029. While LTE technology will remain prevalent, the number of 4G subscribers in India is anticipated to decline from 740 million to 410 million over the next five years.

In the first quarter of 2024, approximately 160 million new users transitioned to 5G, bringing the global total to 1.7 billion 5G users. This number is expected to reach 5.6 billion by the end of 2029, underscoring the accelerating pace of 5G adoption worldwide. The rapid expansion of 5G networks and services demonstrates the growing reliance on this advanced technology to meet the increasing demand for high-speed connectivity. As CSPs continue to innovate and expand their 5G offerings, consumers can expect enhanced mobile experiences and greater access to high-speed internet services.

Over the past year, the telco has taken steps to improve services, including digital asset optimization and new offerings like Connected TV and Cloud gaming services within the Vi App. It’s been recognized for voice quality by TRAI and fast data speeds by independent agencies.

The management sees the FPO as crucial for a turnaround, with funds aimed at upgrading the network and addressing subscriber losses. The focus remains on 4G expansion, with plans to transition more subscribers from 2G to 4G and be 5G-ready by FY26.

While engaging with 5G gear vendors, funding for capex will determine order placements. A significant portion of the FPO proceeds will go towards expanding network infrastructure, setting up new 4G and 5G sites, signaling a strategic investment in future technology.

</excerpt>

Have you ever wondered what makes the digital world work? What powers all the websites, apps, and online videos we use daily? The answer lies in huge buildings full of computers and internet machines called data centers. As India becomes a digital superpower, its growing data center industry has become the backbone supporting this technological growth. These massive facilities are full of servers, routers, and networking equipment that allow online services to work smoothly. More and more Indians are going online – over 881 million internet users as of March 2023! Businesses big and small are also going digital, using smart technologies like data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), and cloud computing. But supporting all these online activities needs strong data centers. Think of data centers as the foundation of the internet itself. They are like giant warehouses packed with rows and rows of computers, servers, routers, and digital machines. Their main job is to store and process huge amounts of data so online services like cloud computing, video streaming, social media, and e-commerce can work properly for everyone.

India’s data center journey began in 2008, with the first one opening in Hyderabad. After that, more of these huge digital buildings came up in cities like Pune, Delhi, Bhubaneswar, and most recently in Guwahati, Assam. As of November 2023, India has an impressive 151 data centers, ranking number 14 in the world! Experts predict that by 2024, the total power of data centers in India’s top seven cities could triple to over one gigawatt! This massive growth is driven by more Indians using the internet, especially on their smartphones. The spread of super-fast 5G internet across India is also increasing the need for bigger, better data centers. Data centers do more than just store data though. They power India’s booming digital economy, which could be worth $1 trillion by 2025! From e-commerce websites to mobile banking apps, online learning platforms to cloud services – they all rely on the strong data infrastructure provided by these massive digital buildings.

The Indian government understands how crucial data centers are for the nation’s future. That’s why it has started big projects like Digital India and Startup India to build a digital-first economy. The government is also making special parks just for data centers, offering incentives to attract more investment. Moreover, data centers are vital for India’s data security and independence. With laws like the Data Protection Bill, India aims to keep its citizens’ sensitive information safely inside the country’s borders instead of foreign data centers. This reduces dependence on other countries while creating more jobs.

Of course, India still faces some challenges with data centers. Ensuring a stable and eco-friendly power supply, upgrading old infrastructure, and addressing environmental concerns will be important for sustainable growth. As new technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT), AI, and edge computing become more common, India’s need for efficient, high-tech, and green data centers will rapidly increase. By embracing innovations, encouraging collaboration, and focusing on sustainability, India can become a global digital powerhouse.

So the next time you stream a video, shop online, use a cloud service, or do anything digital, remember – it’s all made possible by India’s massive data buildings and the hardworking people who keep them running. These are the engines driving our digital present and future!

The Chinese telecom firm, which the US and European countries regard as a security danger, was testing 5G technology in Nepal with little transparency, utilizing a frequency of 2600 MHz. The testing has sparked worries among authorities, prompting the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) to launch an investigation into suspected corruption issues.

Since the corporation is already under investigation for alleged bribes and covert operations around the world, national security is a major worry in its global expansion attempts.
According to Khabarhub, while the corporation faces claims of intellectual property theft and espionage in various nations, national security remains a major worry in its global expansion operations.

Furthermore, Huawei’s business operations have resulted in restrictions in certain nations and international inquiries.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday said high-speed 5G services of State-owned BSNL will be launched by April 2024.

Addressing the press conference Vaishnaw said BSNL does not have a legacy network. After Jio launched 5G services in Bhubaneshwar and Cuttack BSNL will do so.

“So there was a big advantage for BSNL as the entire network we are designing is in a way that it can be rapidly upgraded from 4G to 5G. That cycle will be very fast,” Vaishnaw said.

“Entire Odisha will be covered by 5G services in 2 years. Today, 5G services have been launched in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack,” the telecom minister Vaishnaw said.

Meanwhile, to strengthen the telecom connectivity in the state the central government has allocated Rs 5,600.

Earlier in the day in Odisha 100 telecom towers for 4G services covering 100 odd villages has been launched.

Talking about Vodafone Idea’s (VIL) debt burden of over Rs 2 lakh crore Vaishnaw said, “Vodafone (Idea) has many requirements. It has a particular requirement for capital. How much capital, and who will infuse? All those things are under discussion at this point in time.”

However, at a par value of Rs 10 per share, Vodafone India had offered a stake to the government.

“The responsibility of capital has to come from various sources. The company just doesn’t require conversion. It requires capital. All those things are a complex issue,” Vaishnaw said.

Users of the tech giant Apple will start receiving the much-anticipated software updates for the 5G network in India next week.

The service will launch at the same time that Apple releases the iOS 16 beta software update. On October 1, India declared the beginning of 5G services.

Customers of Airtel and Reliance Jio can use Apple’s beta software programme on any model of the iPhone 14, iPhone 13, iPhone 12, and iPhone SE (3rd generation) to experience 5G service.

Anyone with an active Apple ID who accepts the terms of the Apple Beta Software Program Agreement during the registration procedure is eligible to participate in the programme.

Before the software is made more widely available, customers can test out beta versions and use the newest features.

Users are encouraged to give Apple comments on usability and quality so that Apple can find problems, correct them, and improve its software.

Users of iPhones can enrol their device in the Apple Beta Software Program to gain access to the most recent public betas as well as future updates, such as the 5G beta that will be made available to Airtel and Jio subscribers starting next week.

Users can sign up for the Apple Beta Software Program and have access to the most recent public betas on their iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, HomePod mini, or Apple Watch.

Earlier in October, Apple said in a statement, “We are working with our carrier partners in India to bring the best 5G experience to iPhone users as soon as network validation and testing for quality and performance is completed.”
“5G will be enabled via a software update and will start rolling out to iPhone users in December,” it added in the statement.

In the middle of August, the government asked telecom service providers to get ready for the launch of 5G services by sending them letters allocating spectrum.

Bharti Airtel previously stated that it would reach all of urban India by 2023 and that “Airtel 5G Plus” services had been introduced in eight cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Siliguri, Nagpur, and Varanasi.

Reliance Jio has also declared that it will introduce 5G telecom services by this year’s Diwali in a number of significant cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai. By December 2023, which is less than 18 months from now, it plans to extend its 5G network to every town, tehsil, and taluka in the nation.

The Delhi Police have detained three men for defrauding consumers under the guise of activating 5G services and credit cards. Additionally, the accused men’s possessions were seized by the police, including laptops, swipe machines, mobile phones, SIM cards, debit cards, and expensive vehicles, including an Audi and a Chevrolet Beat.

Mohd Zahid, Pawan Singh, and Ravi Mittal were detained by the Anti-Gang Squad (AGS) of the criminal branch during a search for Zahid, who was wanted in connection with a murder case.

During questioning, Zahid admitted that he had previously used FASTAG to deceive customers by purporting to provide them with services like credit card activation and 5G services, among other things.

Zahid was discovered to have managed phoney accounts set up by Pawan Singh. They took the money using FASTAG’s wallets and later transferred it to Ravi Mittal.

At the gas and CNG pumps in Chandigarh and Haryana, Ravi used to cash the money and provide it to his colleagues.

Targeting consumers of several banks who had lately received credit cards was their strategy.

The gang members used to phone different consumers to trick them into activating their credit cards, increasing credit card limits, and waiving annual fees.

The victims’ credit card numbers and OTP were utilised by the accused to deposit money into these FASTAG wallets.
