</excerpt>

The close aide of former Odisha chief minister Naveen Patanaik, VK Pandian retires from active politics on Sunday.

Announcing his resignation on video, Pandian said, ‘Now consciously I decide to withdraw myself from active politics. I am sorry if I have hurt anyone on this journey. I am sorry if this campaign narrative against me has had a part to play in BJD’s loss’.

This announcement comes days after BJD got defeated in simultaneous Odisha assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

This retirement also comes around the time, when Patanaik declared, that Pandian isn’t his ‘successor’ and it should be decided by people.

Meanwhile, bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has recently brought an end to BJD’s continuous rule led by Naveen Patanaik.

Taking advantage of anti-incumbency, BJP, carefully planned campaign strategy, which centered on emotional issues like Odia asmita (pride), people’s aspirations and PM Modi’s decisive leadership.

In the 147-member assembly, the BJP secured 78 seats, followed by the BJD with 51 seats, while Congress and the CPM won 14 and 1 seats respectively. Later, three independents completed the tally of 147.

But in Odisha Lok Sabha polls, BJP made history, as it managed to increase the tally to 20 from 8 seats in 2019 elections.

Meanwhile, BJD didn’t win one seat, as all 21 of their candidates lost compared to 12 candidates lost in 2019 elections.

Since, then BJD under Naveen Patanaik has been under existential crisis, as the party dominated the state for 25 years.

</excerpt>

In the wake of the Lok Sabha election results, a meeting of newly elected MPs took place at Parliament, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s gesture towards Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has stirred speculation regarding the state of BJP unity. The viral video capturing PM Modi patting Adityanath’s back and Adityanath bowing down in respect is interpreted as a significant message, dispelling rumors of discord between the two BJP stalwarts.

The spotlight on Uttar Pradesh’s electoral outcomes intensified as several Union Ministers lost their seats, resulting in the BJP’s reduced tally to 33 seats from 62 in 2019. Despite being a traditional bastion of the BJP, the surprising resurgence of the Samajwadi Party (SP) in Uttar Pradesh under the leadership of Akhilesh Yadav has shifted political dynamics. Experts credit the SP’s campaign narrative of empowerment for marginalized communities for its electoral success, with over 86% of the party’s elected MPs coming from OBC, Dalit, and Muslim backgrounds.

Speculative reactions from netizens flooded social media platforms, drawing parallels to historical gestures within the BJP. This follows PM Narendra Modi’s recent birthday wishes to Yogi Adityanath on his 52nd birthday, where he praised the UP CM’s contributions towards the state’s progress and empowerment of the poor and downtrodden.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, faced setbacks in key states during the 2024 Lok Sabha election results, resulting in the loss of its exclusive national majority.

Despite being the largest single party in the Lok Sabha, the BJP’s performance fell short of its achievements in the previous elections. In contrast to securing clear majorities independently in 2014 and 2019, the BJP only managed to secure 240 seats this time, well below the halfway mark of 272 seats. On the other hand, the opposition INDIA alliance, led by the Congress party, surpassed expectations by securing 232 seats.

While Modi’s party still has the capacity to form the next government, it will now rely on the support of a coalition of allies to reach the 272-seat threshold. Together with its allies, collectively known as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the BJP secured a total of 292 seats.

Previous Coalition Governments in India Who Came To Power

Throughout India’s political history, there have been instances where coalitions of parties have come to power, resulting in prime ministers from parties that won only a few seats. Here are some notable examples:

Chandra Shekhar (Janata Dal [Samajwadi]): In 1989, the Janata Dal ascended to power with external support from the Congress, leading to Chandra Shekhar becoming the prime minister for a brief period.

H D Deve Gowda (Janata Dal): Following the 1996 Lok Sabha elections, the United Front coalition, with support from the Congress, came to power, and H D Deve Gowda assumed the prime ministership.

I K Gujral (Janata Dal): Gujral succeeded Deve Gowda as the prime minister but resigned within a year, leading to fresh elections.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee (BJP): In 1999, the National Democratic Alliance, led by the BJP, secured a majority in the Lok Sabha, marking the first time a non-Congress coalition had achieved such a feat.

Manmohan Singh (2004 and 2009): In 2004, the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance formed the government with external support from various parties, with Manmohan Singh serving as the prime minister. Singh was re-elected in 2009, becoming the first prime minister since Jawaharlal Nehru to complete a full five-year term after being re-elected.

The 2024 Lok Sabha election results reflect a shifting political landscape in India, with coalition politics playing a significant role in government formation. As the BJP navigates forming a coalition government, the country awaits the next steps in its political journey.

</excerpt>

TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday reaffirmed his support to the BJP-led NDA and said that he “firmly” stands with the saffron party for the formation of new government at the Centre.

In a press conference, Naidu said, “Today, I am heading to Delhi. After the completion of the election, this is my first press meet before going to Delhi. I am very glad for the support of the voters. Ups and downs are common in politics. Many political leaders and parties have been ousted in history. This is a historic election. Even voters from abroad have returned to their hometowns to exercise their votes.”

“Many sleepless nights were spent in getting here. Our party workers have been through a lot in their bid to get the TDP here. We spent these last five years struggling to protect democracy, we’ve succeeded today,” he further added.

“The mandate is clear, our manifesto was clear. Today we reap the benefits of our work in the past five years. I thank Pawan Kalyan for joining us in this bid to protect democracy, the BJP and Janasena joined this alliance as equals. It was to save democracy,” said TDP supremo.

The alliance between TDP, BJP, and Jana Sena Party in the state secured a landslide victory in the Andhra Pradesh elections, capturing 164 out of the total 175 seats. Additionally, TDP emerged victorious in 16 Lok Sabha constituencies.

Shortly after the NDA surpassed the majority threshold of 272 seats out of 543 in the assembly, Naidu extended congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the “success in the Lok Sabha polls and in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections.” TDP, Janasena, and BJP are constituents of the NDA in the southern state, which took on the YSRCP led by Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy.

“On behalf of the people of Andhra Pradesh, I congratulate you on the NDA’s victory in the Lok Sabha and Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections. Our people of Andhra Pradesh have blessed us with a remarkable mandate,” said Naidu in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

He posted this message on social media platform in reply to a message posted by Modi, thanking the people of Andhra Pradesh for giving NDA an ‘exceptional mandate’.

Further, Naidu observed the mandate is a reflection of the trust reposed on the NDA and its vision for the state.

“Together with our people, we shall rebuild Andhra Pradesh and restore its glory,” he added.

The BJP experienced a slight dip in its national vote share, falling from 37.3% in 2019 to 36.6% in 2024. However, this small decline led to a significant drop in its seat count, which fell by 63 from 303 to 240, leaving the party below the halfway mark. Meanwhile, Congress saw a modest increase in its vote share, moving from 19.5% in the last election to 21.2%.

The BJP’s national vote share drop translated into a substantial decrease in its seat tally, putting it well below the halfway mark. In contrast, Congress’s vote share increase nearly doubled its seat count from 52 to 99.

The large variation in seat tallies despite minor changes in vote share is due to the aggregation of state-level results. A party may gain vote share in a state where it is starting from a low base, resulting in no seat gains, while losing the same amount in a highly competitive state could cost many seats.

This scenario played out for the BJP this time. For instance, its vote share in Tamil Nadu rose from 3.6% in 2019 to 11.2% in 2024, but this did not translate into any additional seats. Similarly, an increase from 9.6% to 18.6% in Punjab did not yield any seats without an alliance, resulting in the loss of the two seats it previously held.

Conversely, a drop of about three percentage points in Bihar, from 23.6% to 20.5%, cost the BJP five seats, while a mere 1.6 percentage point drop in West Bengal resulted in a loss of six seats. The most dramatic instance occurred in Maharashtra, where a 1.4 percentage point drop from 27.6% to 26.2% led to winning less than half the seats (10 versus 23).

Congress presented an almost mirror image of this. In Maharashtra, a rise in vote share of less than one percentage point, from 16.3% to 17.1%, saw its seat tally jump from one to 13. In Rajasthan, an increase in vote share from 34.2% to 37.9% resulted in winning eight seats instead of none. In Uttar Pradesh, a rise in vote share from 6.3% to 9.5% saw its seat tally go from one to six.

The third-largest party, Samajwadi Party (SP), achieved its highest tally ever of 37 seats in the Lok Sabha by significantly raising its vote share from 18% to 33.5%. Combined with Congress’s 9.5%, the INDIA bloc in the state had a 43% vote share, creating a neck-and-neck battle with the NDA. Last time, the SP-BSP combine’s 37.3% was a far cry from the NDA’s 50%-plus vote share. This dramatic closing of the gap, which few had anticipated in the absence of BSP from the opposition alliance, was the game changer in Uttar Pradesh.

Highlights of Smriti Irani’s 2019 Win

Historic Upset: Defeated Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, ending the Gandhi family’s decades-long dominance in Amethi.

Margin of Victory: Secured a win by over 55,000 votes.

Grassroots Campaign: Engaged extensively with the local population, addressing their issues directly.

Development Focus: Emphasized projects improving infrastructure, healthcare, and education.

Effective Strategy: Benefited from BJP’s strategic planning and strong organizational support.

Symbolic Victory: Her win symbolized BJP’s broader electoral success in 2019.

National Attention: Elevated her profile as a key BJP leader.

Amethi: A Battleground of Change

Amethi, traditionally a Congress stronghold, gained national attention when Smriti Irani won the seat in 2019, defeating Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Her victory marked a dramatic shift in the region’s political dynamics. Over the past five years, Irani has focused on developmental projects aimed at improving infrastructure, healthcare, and education in Amethi, earning her substantial support and popularity among the constituents.

Irani’s political journey has seen her rise through various ministerial roles:

Union Minister for Human Resource Development (May 2014–July 2016)

Union Minister for Textiles (July 2016–July 2021)

Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting (July 2017–May 2018)

Union Minister for Women and Child Development (May 2019–present)

Union Minister for Minority Affairs (July 2022–present)

MP from Amethi

Despite Smriti Irani’s substantial efforts to transform Amethi, the 2024 Lok Sabha elections ushered in a new era with Kishori Lal’s unexpected victory. This result highlights the dynamic nature of Indian politics and the importance of grassroots connections. As Amethi transitions to new leadership, Irani’s impactful tenure will remain a significant chapter in its political history, while the focus shifts to Kishori Lal’s approach to addressing the aspirations and challenges of his constituents.

Faizabad is the district which encompasses the city of Ayodhya, where the BJP’s major poll plank, Ram Mandir, was inaugurated in January. Interestingly, the district itself was renamed as Ayodhya in 2018 but the Lok Sabha seat is still called Faizabad.

SP Candidate leads with 10,000 votes

More than five hours after counting started, BJP’s candidate Lallu Singh was seen trailing behind Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate Awadhesh Prasad. The lead margin was around 10,000 votes. The BJP had looked to bask in the glory of the inauguration of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, held on January 22. The spectacular opening of the grand temple was a part of the BJP’s manifesto in the previous election.

Meanwhile, the saffron party is also leading in neighbouring Varanasi, which is one of the 80 Lok Sabha constituencies in Uttar Pradesh and among the 543 seats in India, represented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. PM Modi has won from the constituency for two consecutive terms – 2014 and 2019 and is also the BJP candidate for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections 2024.

Analysts assess historical stock market reactions to Lok Sabha election outcomes, anticipating implications for the 2024 results. The stock market has historically demonstrated sensitivity to political events, with election outcomes influencing market behavior, particularly in response to pro-business and stable government victories.

Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Financial Services, notes the optimistic market sentiment following exit polls favoring a BJP-led victory. Nair highlights a surge in public sector undertakings (PSUs) and anticipates further market re-rating amid expectations of continued reform momentum.

Neeraj Sharma, AVP of technical and derivatives research at Asit C. Mehta Investment Intermediates, observes bullish market activity on Dalal Street, with record-high openings for the Sensex and Nifty. Sharma attributes this to broad-based buying, particularly in sectors like capital goods, PSU banks, oil and gas, power, and real estate, which saw gains of 5-7%.

To contextualize the market’s response, analysts analyze the market reactions on the result days of the past four Lok Sabha elections, starting from 2019:

2019 Lok Sabha Election Recap:

Date: May 23, 2019

Market Reaction: Positive response to BJP’s decisive victory under Narendra Modi’s leadership. Sensex surged over 1,000 points (around 3.5%), with Nifty also witnessing substantial gains.

Reason: Investors welcomed the continuity of a stable government and anticipated ongoing economic reforms to stimulate growth.

According to data compiled by Livemint, while both Sensex and Nifty remained flat overall in 2019, they experienced intraday fluctuations:

Sensex Intraday High: 40,124.96

Sensex Intraday Low: 38,651.61

Nifty Intraday High: 12,041.15

Nifty Intraday Low: 11,614.5

As India prepares for another pivotal election outcome, market participants closely monitor political developments, anticipating their implications on investment sentiment and market dynamics.
