</excerpt>

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, scheduled for a two-day visit to West Bengal, plans to conduct a massive roadshow in Kolkata before the final phase of the Lok Sabha elections on Tuesday, May 28th. Kolkata Police has issued a traffic advisory to ensure smooth traffic flow during PM Modi’s election campaign in the city.

Traffic advisory Issued By Kolkata Police

The traffic police stated, “In view of public safety and convenience during the visit of the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India to Kolkata on 28.05.2024 and 29.05.2024, vehicle movement and parking in Kolkata shall be regulated as follows…” according to Vineet Kumar Goyal, Commissioner of Police, Kolkata.

The advisory specifies restrictions on the movement of goods vehicles in certain Kolkata areas from 3 pm to 9 pm on Tuesday and from 8 am to 12:30 pm on Wednesday, or until the conclusion of Modi’s visit. Vehicle parking will also be regulated or restricted during these periods.

The traffic restrictions and diversions on May 28th and May 29th include various routes such as 11 Furlong Gate, Khidderpore Road, Red Road, and others. Biddhan Sarani will be closed for all vehicles from 3 pm to 9 pm on Tuesday, and heavy goods vehicles will face restrictions around Raj Bhawan from 6 am on Tuesday to 10 pm on Wednesday. Additionally, the traffic police reserve the right to divert vehicular traffic from arterial and feeder roads as needed.

PM Modi’s itinerary on May 28th in West Bengal includes a public meeting at Ashoknagar in Barasat constituency and another in Jadavpur, followed by paying floral tributes at the Subhas Chandra Bose statue around 5:55 pm. At 6 pm, he is scheduled to lead a 2.5-km-long roadshow in Kolkata.

</excerpt>

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a blistering attack on the Opposition during an election rally in Bihar’s Patliputra, reaffirming his commitment to safeguarding the reservation benefits for the SC/ST/OBC communities as guaranteed by the Indian Constitution. Modi criticized the INDIA bloc, suggesting they could cater to their vote bank if they wished, but he remained steadfast in his support for reservation.

“I am assuring Bihar, the SC/ST/OBC communities, as long as Modi is alive, their rights will be protected. For me, the Constitution is paramount, Babasaheb Ambedkar’s sentiments are paramount… If the INDIA bloc chooses to prioritize their vote bank, that’s their choice… even if they engage in dance, I will uphold SC/ST/OBC reservation staunchly,” he declared.

Modi accused the Congress of altering laws related to minority institutions to appease their vote bank, resulting in numerous institutions being labeled as minority institutions, thus reducing SC/ST/OBC reservation benefits.

“The RJD-Congress alliance aims to offer reservation to their vote bank based on religion, contravening our Constitution which prohibits religious-based reservation,” Modi stated.

He also mocked Lalu Yadav’s RJD, likening their lantern symbol to outdated technology, contrasting it with modern LED bulbs, and implying that RJD’s governance has plunged Bihar into darkness.

Earlier, Modi faced criticism for suggesting that the Congress would redistribute the country’s wealth among families with many children. However, he clarified in an interview that his statement wasn’t aimed at any specific community and emphasized his commitment to non-communal politics.

Despite various predictions, including those by poll pundits like Prashant Kishor and Yogendra Yadav, suggesting BJP’s victory in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, Modi remained focused on his campaign.

</excerpt>

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will speak at two public rallies on May 24, in Himachal Pradesh that are planned to assist BJP candidates in the districts of Mandi and Sirmaur.

The event at Sirmaur will support BJP candidate and sitting Member of Parliament Suresh Kashyap, who is running for re-election. Nahan is within the Shimla Parliamentary constituency.

State BJP president Rajeev Bindal expressed anticipation for Modi’s visit, stating, “PM Modi will address the rally at Chaugan Maidan on May 24. Grand preparations are underway to welcome him. About 40,000 people are likely to come here from the Shimla parliamentary constituency.”

Contrasting the BJP’s optimism, Bindal downplayed the opposition, claiming that the Congress-led alliance is faltering, expected to secure fewer than 50 seats.

The second rally, in Mandi, supports Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut, marking her electoral debut. The BJP aims to wrest the seat from Congress, previously held by Pratibha Singh, wife of former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, in the 2021 by-elections after the passing of BJP MP Ram Swaroop Sharma.

The contest is significant, especially with Vikramaditya Singh, son of Virbhadra Singh and Pratibha Singh, posing a strong challenge to Kangana. Mandi has traditionally been a stronghold of the Virbhadra Singh family, with Virbhadra Singh serving as a three-term MP and Pratibha Singh winning thrice from the Mandi parliamentary constituency.

Amid the high-octane election campaign across the country, folk artists from western Odisha are actively participating in public gatherings to support candidates and garner voter support. Despite the rise of social media and modern musical instruments, these traditional performers continue to captivate audiences during election rallies in the coastal state.

The extensive election campaigns have provided an opportunity for folk artists to improve their financial status. Political parties, while adopting new methods, still rely on folk performances as a highly effective way to attract crowds to their events.

Local artist Shankar Prasad Behra noted that the demand for folk artists increases significantly during elections. “The world-famous Sambalpuri folk art is popular in western Odisha, and through this artwork, we draw people to election campaign venues and encourage them to vote for a candidate,” Behra told ANI.

Behra explained that his team has travelled across the state, performing and appealing to voters to participate in the democratic process. The artists create and perform songs for various political parties, regardless of affiliation. Although the trend of engaging folk artists in election campaigns has seen a slight decline due to social media and other communication modes, Behra emphasized that their performances remain valuable. “Our team, comprising singers, dancers, and musicians, still receives good opportunities to earn money,” he added.

Political parties continue to engage folk artists because of their unique ability to connect with people through performances in the local language and dance. The assembly and Lok Sabha elections in Odisha are being held simultaneously across four phases, from May 13 to June 1, with vote counting scheduled for June 4.

In the 2019 assembly elections, the BJD won 112 out of 146 seats, while the BJP secured 23 seats and Congress nine. In the Lok Sabha elections, the BJD claimed 12 seats, the BJP won eight, and the Congress secured just one seat.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah strongly condemned the Congress party during a speech to a public gathering in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh, charging them with decades of national plunder. While he was doing campaigning for BJP candidates Dinesh Pratap Singh in Raebareli and Smriti Irani in Amethi, he commended their diligence and gave his assurance that the party would win both seats.

“We got the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya after a long wait,” Shah said, taking aim at the INDIA alliance. You may be sure that if the Congress takes power, they would place a Babri lock on the Pran Prathishtha despite their assertions that it hasn’t been completed completely.”

Criticizing dynastic politics, Shah said, “Lalu ji wants his son to become CM, Mamata wants the same for her nephew, and Sonia Gandhi wants Rahul Gandhi to be Prime Minister. They claim Raebareli and Amethi’s seats belong to them. But I believe it is up to the people to decide. There is no seat reserved for family dynasties.”

Regarding Article 370, he stated, “The Congress party didn’t act against Article 370, but Modi ji abrogated it. He has halted terrorism in the country and eradicated terrorists. Pakistan-occupied Kashmir also belongs to us. We are not scared.”

Accusing the Congress of corruption, he said, “They have looted the country for many years. Modi Sarkar will put all the corrupt in jail.”

Praising the double engine government in Uttar Pradesh, he added, “The state has developed under Modi ji. UP has received 14 expressways, a metro network, medical colleges, a film city, a toy park, etc. Yogi Ji has eradicated the goons in the state.”

Notably, Amethi and Raebareli, traditional strongholds of the Gandhi family, have once again become focal points. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is contesting in Raebareli, while the family’s close aide Kishori Lal Sharma is running against Smriti Irani in Amethi. In 2014, Congress won only two seats in Uttar Pradesh (Raebareli and Amethi), but this tally dropped to one in 2019 after losing Amethi.

</excerpt>

Referencing expelled Congress leader Acharya Pramod Krishnam’s controversial statement aimed at the Congress party and its ally, the Samajwadi Party (SP), Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted that they would demolish the Ram Temple in Ayodhya if they were to win in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

Addressing a rally in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh, ahead of the fifth phase of polling for the 18th Lok Sabha on May 20, PM Modi stated, “If the Congress, SP, and their INDIA partners come to power, our Ram Lalla would have to return to the tent again as they would run a bulldozer over the Ram Mandir. They should take lessons from Yogi-ji (Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath) on where to run bulldozers and where not to.”

In an interview with ANI earlier, Acharya Krishnam made a startling claim, alleging that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had strategized to overturn the landmark judgment, resolving the decades-old title dispute and facilitating the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

Further intensifying his criticism of the Congress-SP coalition in the state, PM Modi remarked, “The Congress and the Samajwadi Party have become slaves to appeasement politics. And, when Modi uncovers the truth before the people, they accuse me of creating a Hindu-Muslim divide.” Confident in the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) prospects of securing a third consecutive victory and returning to power at the Centre, PM Modi asserted, “June 4 (counting day) is not too far away now. All doubts will be cleared, and the entire country and the world will witness when we secure a hat-trick of wins and return for a third term at the Centre.”

Expressing enthusiasm for the support and electoral backing from women voters, he highlighted that half of the country’s population has been supportive of the BJP since the abolition of the Triple Talaq. “The vote bank of these INDI parties is also realizing the truth now. Our (Muslim) mothers and sisters are pleased with the abolition of the Triple Talaq and are supporting us,” PM Modi remarked.

Encouraging people to vote overwhelmingly for the BJP and its NDA allies for the development of their respective constituencies in the state, PM Modi emphasized, “You deserve MPs who advocate for your concerns in the Parliament and strive to improve your lives. We need MPs who will earnestly work to develop the constituencies they represent and not waste their five-year term criticizing Modi. And the only way to ensure that is to vote for Lotus (the BJP’s electoral symbol).” “Can you achieve the speed of a 1,000 CC bike with a 100 CC engine? If you want rapid development, vote for a strong and decisive government. Only the BJP can deliver such a government,” PM Modi concluded. Later in the day, he would address a public rally at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park.

</excerpt>

Prime Minister Narendra Modi claimed on Saturday that previous Congress administrations were “weak” in confronting Pakistan’s terrorism because they would reach out to Pakistan with conciliation messages in the hopes of bringing about peace, only to be met with an increase in terrorist activity. Modi emphasised that India’s position towards Pakistan had changed since the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and emphasised the resoluteness of the current government.

“In the past, administrations wrote love letters to Pakistan while terrorists freely wrecked havoc. But because to your vote, we were able to say “enough is enough” since India in the modern era does not use dossiers. This is the retaliatory New India. Brave men and women from Jharkhand and Bihar formerly gave their lives to defend their borders. It was a tragic repeating event. “The cowardly Congress regimes would be mourned worldwide,” Modi declared during a Palamu election rally.

“The surgical and Balakot strikes rattled Pakistan. Now, Pakistan is appealing worldwide for help. Pakistani leaders are praying for Rahul Gandhi to become India’s Prime Minister. But a resolute India desires a robust government,” he added.

The Prime Minister also highlighted achievements post-2014, including the eradication of Naxalism, terrorism, and the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir.

“With the power of your vote, the barrier of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir was dismantled. Naxalism and terrorism plagued regions like Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Bihar, and Andhra Pradesh, drenching the land in blood. Your vote fulfilled the aspirations of countless mothers and liberated these areas from Naxalite terror,” he emphasized.

Meanwhile, former Pakistani Minister Fawad Chaudhry praised Rahul Gandhi’s socialist ideology, drawing parallels between the challenges faced by India and Pakistan regarding wealth distribution.

“Rahul Gandhi, akin to his great grandfather Jawaharlal Nehru, embodies socialist principles. The economic disparities in India and Pakistan persist despite 75 years of partition. Rahul’s recent remarks echo concerns about wealth concentration. Fair wealth distribution remains capitalism’s greatest challenge,” Chaudhry posted on X.

Jharkhand will undergo elections in four phases: May 13, 20, 25, and June 1. In 2019, the BJP-led NDA secured 12 seats, with BJP winning 11, while Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and Congress clinched one each. The general elections, conducted in seven phases over a six-week span from April 19 to June 1, will announce results on June 4.

</excerpt>

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today took pot-shots at each other over the issues of women’s safety and corruption in the State.

In all three rallies in West Bengal on Friday, the Prime Minister hit out at the Trinamool Congress for the corruption in the School Service Commission scam in which 26,000 have lost their jobs.

Addressing rallies in Bardhaman-Durgapur and Krishnanagar, Narendra Modi said: “Although I want all those involved in corruption by the TMC to be punished but don’t want the innocent to suffer. The corruption that the TMC has done in Bengal in school recruitment is shameful. Due to this scam, several genuine candidates have suffered. I have asked the Bengal BJP unit on behalf of the party to create a separate legal cell and social media platform to provide help to the genuine candidates and teachers,”

“The BJP will support such honest candidates and will provide them legal help and will fight for them. This is Modi’s guarantee,” he said.

PM Modi underscored the lack of accountability within the Trinamool Congress, listing a series of scams: “TMC leaders have a record of committing various types of unimaginable scams – from Ponzi schemes, ration, and recruitment scams, to coal and animal trafficking scams. Each scam is worth several hundred crores of rupees, reflecting how these people have looted the public in every way.”

He said that the Trinamool Congress had allowed anti-social elements to exploit the people, capturing villages, hospitals, police stations, and mines. This is mafia rule, not governance.

The recent incident in Sandeshkhali is a result of this. Investigating agencies are attacked, and the State Government supports the attackers. TMC is running a mobocracy, not a republic. The court has to reprimand the Government daily. It’s crucial to stop such anti-democratic activities. Strengthen Modi to safeguard democracy and the Constitution,” the PM.

PM Modi alleged that Trinamool Congress was indulging in politics of appeasement. “Why have Hindus become second-class citizens in Bengal? An MLA of TMC gave a statement recently that they will throw Hindus in the Bhagirathi River. What kind of politics is this? Is appeasement more important than humanity for the TMC?” the PM asked. “The Congress, TMC and Left parties only believe in the politics of appeasement,” the PM added, referring to the reported remarks of Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir on“throwing Hindus in the Bhagirathi River.

During his address, PM Modi also criticized the Trinamool Congress for its “apathy towards the victims in Sandeshkhali”. “The State Government, due to its appeasement politics, didn’t touch the main accused in the Sandeshkhali case as his name is Shahjahan Sheikh.

So many atrocities were committed against women there, and the entire country wanted punishment for the culprits.

But, the TMC kept protecting the main accused till the end,” he said.

The PM also claimed: “Modi ensures direct transfer of funds to beneficiaries’ bank accounts, cutting out middlemen. However, TMC insists on channelling funds through their accounts.

Modi’s approach is a direct benefit, while TMC obstructs Central Government schemes by insisting on controlling funds.”

PM Modi also came down heavily on the Bengal Government for opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act. “The Congress, TMC and Left parties only believe in the politics of appeasement,” Modi added.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee struck back from her election rally in Bardhaman. Bringing up the Sandeshkhali issue, which was used by the BJP to condemn her party, Mamata Banerjee hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that while he had a lot to say at the time, he has kept quiet over the sexual harassment charges levelled against West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose despite being in the State when the allegations were made.

The Trinamool Congress chief also asked Governor Bose – who had made a series of statements against the Government over the alleged sexual harassment of women by Trinamool leaders in Sandeshkhali: “How can he talk about the dignity of women when he has been accused of doing the same thing at his official residence.

Addressing a rally in Bardhaman, Banerjee said: “Modi has given so many messages (‘sandesh’) on Sandeshkhali. I did not let any untoward incident happen there. There was an issue around land but we solved it by sending officers to the village. But what are you doing? Yesterday, a young woman working at the Raj Bhavan came out and spoke out against the Governor’s harassment.”

“Even yesterday, the Governor asked why my Minister spoke against him. I have heard of many such incidents but I did not bring them up. But yesterday, the tears of the woman broke my heart. The Governor spoke about Sandeshkhali but why did he do this to someone working for him? He molested her not once, but twice,” she alleged.

Stating that she had seen the video of the woman’s testimony, the Chief Minister asked why the Prime Minister, who was in Bengal and had stayed at the Raj Bhavan on Thursday night, had not said anything. “Your people were also there when she left crying and said she was scared of working at the Raj Bhavan. She said she was called at odd hours and was subjected to harassment. And these are the people who talk about the dignity of our mothers and sisters,” she alleged.

Mamata Banerjee also accused the BJP of running a “washing machine” to whitewash corrupt leaders. “Modi and the BJP is the biggest corruption racket,” she said.

</excerpt>

The Election Commission of India announced on Friday that a total of 1,717 candidates from 10 States/UTs will be contesting elections in phase 4 of the Lok Sabha polls. As per the poll body, there were 4,264 nominations filed for 96 parliamentary constituencies across these regions. The polling for the fourth phase of elections is scheduled for May 13.

According to the Election Commission, Telangana saw the highest number of nomination forms filed (1488), followed by Andhra Pradesh with 1103 nominations from 25 constituencies. Malkajgiri Parliamentary Constituency in Telangana received the highest number of 177 nomination forms, followed by 13-Nalgonda and 14-Bhongir in the same state with 114 nomination forms each. The average number of contesting candidates in a parliamentary constituency for the fourth phase is 18.

The deadline for filing nominations for phase 4 for all 10 States/UTs was April 25, 2024. The ECI directed all states and UTs to ensure the timely issuance of ‘No Dues certificate’ to intending candidates to be included in their affidavits.

In a move to facilitate intending candidates, the ECI instructed all States/UTs to ensure the issuance of “No Dues Certificate” within 48 hours of the receipt of the request letter in cases where dues are not pending or are not due by law. Additionally, details of dues accrued to such individuals should be provided within 48 hours of submitting the application to the agencies, and the No dues certificate should be issued within 24 hours of clearing such dues.

The Election Commission’s order stated, “During ongoing elections to the Lok Sabha, 2024, it has come to the notice of the Election Commission that an intending candidate could not obtain “No Dues Certificate” from concerned authorities and therefore could not file the same with respect to the (a) rent, (b) electricity charges, (c) water charges and (d) telephone charges, even after the candidate had supposedly cleared all such dues. Such instances may cause significant loss not only to the aspiring candidates but also to the political parties and electorate of the constituency concerned and undermines the principles of participatory electoral democracy.”

Failure to provide a ‘no dues certificate’ even after clearing all dues can jeopardize the candidate’s candidature during the scrutiny of nominations. Additionally, submitting a ‘no dues certificate’ after the statutory period for filing nominations has expired does not provide relief for the candidate. To prevent such occurrences, the advisory has been issued.

The Lok Sabha elections are being conducted in seven phases until June 1, with polling for two phases already concluded. Vote counting will take place on June 4.

Speaking in Guna, Union Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Jyotiraditya Scindia emphasized his familial connection with the public, stating, “I am not a minister or merely a leader; I am a member of your family.” Addressing a gathering in Bamori, Guna district, Scindia stressed the historical sacrifices of the Scindia family for the region’s development.

Scindia stressed the need for widespread voter participation, expressing worry over previous stages’ low voter turnout. Campaigning alongside Scindia, former chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan attributed crucial roles to him, citing the Ladli Bahna Yojana as one that impacted state assembly elections.

Chouhan criticized the Congress, highlighting their failed ambitions in recent polls and praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, foreseeing India’s ascension as a global leader. He remarked on Congress’ declining influence, citing recent defections, such as Akshay Kanti Bam from Indore parliamentary seat.

Madhya Pradesh’s Lok Sabha elections are conducted in four phases, with the first two already completed. The third phase, on May 7, covers nine constituencies, while the fourth and final phase, on May 13, includes eight. With 29 constituencies, Madhya Pradesh holds significant representation in the Lower House, comprising 10 reserved seats for SC and ST candidates and 19 unreserved seats.

Upon arrival, PM Modi proceeded directly to the Raj Bhavan around 10:20 pm, where he received a warm welcome from West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose. The Prime Minister spent the night at the Governor’s residence.

Key highlights of PM Modi’s Kolkata visit: PM Narendra Modi is undertaking a two-day visit to Kolkata ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. He is scheduled to address public gatherings in three Lok Sabha constituencies – Krishnanagar, Purba Bardhaman, and Bolpur – on Friday.

In light of PM Modi’s visit, the Kolkata traffic police have implemented restrictions on vehicle movement and parking in various parts of the city. According to the police advisory, goods vehicles will be allowed entry into the city only during specific hours, while other vehicles may face restrictions and diversions during the PM’s scheduled rallies.

Additionally, Governor CV Ananda Bose curtailed his personal visit to his home state, Kerala, and returned to Kolkata due to the Prime Minister’s visit. Over the past two weeks, PM Modi has conducted numerous election rallies in various constituencies of West Bengal, including Malda, Arambagh, Krishnanagar, and Barasat.

The ruling Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party are engaged in a bitter electoral war in the state of West Bengal for the Lok Sabha. Mamata Banerjee and PM Modi have been campaigning hard ahead of the vote. The TMC government in Bengal, led by Mamata Banerjee, was charged by Prime Minister Modi on April 26 during a rally in Malda of helping Bangladeshi infiltrators settle in the state so they could take Indian land and property.

In response, Banerjee countered the PM’s remarks during her rally, alleging that the Left, Congress, and BJP were collectively opposing the TMC. She stated, “The Left and the Congress are the two eyes of the BJP. Together these three parties are fighting against the TMC in West Bengal.”

</excerpt>

Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted on Thursday that former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi annulled the inheritance law during his tenure to safeguard family wealth and property from government acquisition after the demise of his mother, Indira Gandhi.

Speaking at an election rally in Morena, Prime Minister Modi stated, “The details concerning Inheritance Tax are enlightening. When former PM Indira Gandhi passed away, her children were set to inherit her property. However, there existed a regulation that mandated a portion of the property be surrendered to the government before it could be inherited by the children. The Congress had devised a law regarding this. To prevent the property from falling into government hands, the then PM Rajiv Gandhi eliminated the inheritance law. After amassing wealth across four generations, they now aim to plunder your assets.”

Condemning the Karnataka government’s decision to classify the entire Muslim community in the state under the OBC category, the Prime Minister warned that the opposition party intends to implement this approach nationwide.

“The Congress government in Karnataka designated all members of the Muslim community in the state as OBC. Congress had already expanded the OBC category to include numerous new entrants, thereby depriving the existing OBCs of their educational and job reservation benefits,” PM Modi remarked.

He further highlighted Congress’ earlier attempts to divide OBC reservation on religious grounds, recalling a cabinet note from December 19, 2011, proposing to allocate a portion of the 27% OBC quota to a specific religion. However, this decision was challenged and ultimately rejected by both the Andhra Pradesh High Court and the Supreme Court.

In Madhya Pradesh, the Prime Minister cautioned, the Congress seeks to extend this model, thereby jeopardizing the reservations enjoyed by various communities like Yadavs, Khushwahas, and Gujjars.

Earlier, the National Commission for Backward Castes (NCBC) criticized the Karnataka government’s move to classify the entire Muslim community under the OBC category, deeming it unjust to the OBC community. Despite seeking clarification from the Karnataka government on the basis of this reservation, the NCBC chairman stated that they have not received a satisfactory response.
