</excerpt>

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Shehzad Poonawalla strongly criticized the Congress and AAP alliance, labeling it a “friendship of selfishness.” Poonawalla’s remarks came after Delhi government minister and AAP leader Gopal Rai declared that there would be no collaboration between the two parties in the forthcoming Delhi assembly elections.

Rai, on Thursday, affirmed that the AAP would contest the Delhi assembly elections independently, without forming an alliance with the Congress. He stressed that the alliance between the two parties was limited to the Lok Sabha polls and would not extend to the state elections.

Poonawalla condemned Rai’s statement, pointing out the failure of the INDIA bloc, which failed to secure any of the seven seats in Delhi. “Gopal Rai has stated that following their (INDIA alliance) failure to win any of the seven seats in Delhi, there will be no alliance between the Congress party and AAP in the Assembly elections. This was merely a self-serving friendship. Now, they will engage in mutual criticism in Delhi as well. This reveals the true nature of the INDIA alliance,” Poonawalla stated on Thursday.

During the Lok Sabha polls in the national capital, both parties were unsuccessful, with the BJP securing all seven Lok Sabha seats. While AAP contested four seats, Congress fielded candidates for three seats.

AAP and Congress are part of the INDIA bloc. Although the two parties formed an alliance in the Lok Sabha polls in Delhi, Punjab, and Gujarat, there was no alliance between them in Punjab. Congress secured seven seats in Punjab, while AAP, in power in the state, won three.

Assembly elections in Delhi are anticipated to take place in early 2025. In the 2020 Delhi assembly polls, Congress failed to secure any seats, while AAP won 62 out of the 70 seats, and BJP secured the remaining eight seats.

AAP’s announcement comes at a time when the newly elected Lok Sabha MPs have yet to take oath, and discussions are underway among the INDIA bloc partners to enhance coordination to challenge the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government.

Meanwhile, in the Lok Sabha elections 2024, the BJP secured all seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi for the third consecutive time. In North-East Delhi, incumbent BJP MP Manoj Tiwari won by 1,38,778 votes against Congress candidate Kanhaiya Kumar. Praveen Khandelwal emerged victorious in Chandni Chowk against Congress’ Jaiprakash Agarwal with a margin of 89,325 votes. In East Delhi, Harsh Malhotra defeated Aam Aadmi Party’s Kuldeep Kumar with 93,663 votes.

Bansuri Swaraj from New Delhi defeated AAP’s Somnath Bharti with a margin of 78,370 votes. In North-West Delhi, Yogender Chandoliya won against Udit Raj of Congress with a margin of 2,90,849 votes. Ramvir Singh Bidhuri from South Delhi defeated AAP’s Sahi Ram with a margin of 1,24,333 votes, and Kamaljeet Sehrawat from West Delhi won against AAP’s Mahabal Mishra with a margin of 1,99,013 votes.

According to the Election Commission of India, the BJP won 240 seats, a decrease from its 2019 tally of 303. On the other hand, the Congress showed significant improvement, winning 99 seats. While the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance secured 292 seats, the INDIA bloc crossed the 230 mark, presenting strong competition and surpassing expectations.

The final date and time are still under consideration, with adjustments being made to accommodate the schedules of heads of state from various countries. Once their schedules are confirmed by the end of the day, a definitive date and time will be established. Additionally, there’s a chance that the ceremony might be held at Rashtrapati Bhawan on Sunday morning if several dignitaries need to depart by Sunday evening.

Meanwhile, the swearing-in ceremony of Telugu Desam Party chief N Chandrababu Naidu as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, initially slated for June 9, is likely to be postponed to June 12. This shift is due to Naidu’s obligation to attend Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony first. TDP spokesperson K Pattabhi Ram explained that Naidu prefers to avoid rushing back to Amaravati after attending Modi’s event in New Delhi. Furthermore, Naidu has extended invitations to several BJP leaders for the ceremony in the state capital.

“I don’t have any announcements to make with respect to that dialogue, but it is an important priority for us, it’s an important priority for the secretary and we will continue to hold it. But in terms of when it will happen, I can’t tell you sitting here,” explained Miller.

Praising India as the world’s largest democracy, Matthew Miller applauded the Indian government, voters, and poll workers for the successful execution of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

“…So India is, of course, the world’s largest democracy and the election that just played out over the last six weeks was the largest exercise of democracy in the history of the world. We commend the government of India, voters and poll workers, for this massive undertaking…,” remarked Matthew Miller during the media briefing.

Miller reiterated the US’s anticipation of continued collaboration with PM Modi.

“…In terms of the prime minister’s-coalition in the different governments, those are all choices for the Indian people to make and we respect the will of the Indian people,” he added.

Following PM Modi’s victory, US President Joe Biden congratulated him and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) via a post on X, highlighting the growing friendship between the two nations.

In the X post, Biden stated, “Congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the National Democratic Alliance on their victory, and the nearly 650 million voters in this historic election. The friendship between our nations is only growing as we unlock a shared future of unlimited potential.”

The Election Commission concluded the 2024 Lok Sabha elections on Tuesday, revealing that BJP won 240 seats with Congress trailing behind at 99 seats out of the 543 constituencies. In an unexpected turn of events, Narendra Modi was unanimously chosen as the leader by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), confirmed by a letter of support from 21 NDA leaders. The significant decision was made during an important gathering at Modi’s official Delhi residence on the following Wednesday.

</excerpt>

Following the conclusion of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where the BJP fell short of a two-thirds majority, political alliances are in motion as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the INDIA leaders convene crucial meetings today to gather support for government formation.

With the BJP-led NDA securing 294 seats in the 543-member Parliament, which is 22 seats more than the crucial figure of 272, and the INDIA Opposition bloc managing 234 seats, which is 38 seats less than the majority mark, both sides are engaged in intense negotiations to solidify their positions.

Key figures such as the TDP’s Chandrababu Naidu and JDU’s Nitish Kumar, pivotal allies of the NDA, hold significant sway in determining the path to power. While these leaders contested the general election in alliance with the BJP, reports suggest that INDIA leaders have reached out to veteran coalition-era politicians in an attempt to garner support for the Opposition bloc.

“NDA and INDIA leaders alliance are converging in Delhi for discussions on the next steps. Notably, Nitish Kumar and Tejashwi Yadav, once allies, will be traveling together on the same flight to Delhi for separate meetings, showcasing the intricacies of Indian politics.

Despite speculation about potential shifts, Nitish Kumar’s close aide and JDU leader KC Tyagi reaffirmed the party’s commitment to the NDA. Meanwhile, Chandrababu Naidu extended his congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the NDA’s performance in Andhra Pradesh and expressed his willingness for collaborative efforts with the BJP in the state’s development.

However, it’s worth noting that both Nitish Kumar and Chandrababu Naidu have previously voiced criticism against Prime Minister Modi and the BJP. Nitish Kumar, in particular, led discussions for forming an opposition front before his last-minute decision to switch alliances, adding layers of complexity to the current political landscape.

Among the prominent leaders flying to the national capital for the crucial meetings are Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, Uddhav Thackeray, Sharad Pawar, and DMK president MK Stalin, representing the INDIA coalition. The NDA contingent includes Nitish Kumar, Chandrababu Naidu, Eknath Shinde, Jitan Ram Manjhi, Pawan Kalyan, Chirag Paswan, and HD Kumaraswamy, among others.

As political maneuvering intensifies, all eyes are on Delhi as these leaders navigate the intricate web of alliances and negotiations to determine the future course of governance in the nation.

The BJP-led NDA secured its third successive government at the Centre, despite winning fewer seats than expected. The final tally of the Lok Sabha 2024 elections revealed the BJP winning 240 seats, while the Opposition Congress secured 99 seats, notably close to the 100-seat mark. This election marked a historic moment as the BJP, for the first time since 2014, did not secure a majority on its own.

In his address following the election results, PM Modi attributed the victory to the collective efforts towards the development of a prosperous India, underlining the principles of inclusivity and development encapsulated in the motto ‘Sabka Sath Sabka Vikas’. He noted that the BJP-led NDA’s third successive term marked a significant milestone in Indian political history, echoing the sentiments of national progress and unity.

PM Modi also highlighted the strength of the BJP-led alliance, emphasizing that despite the consolidation of opposition parties, their collective strength fell short of the BJP’s tally, demonstrating the continued trust of the people in the governance and vision of the ruling party.

</excerpt>

The Lok Sabha elections 2024 have concluded with unexpected results, marking a significant shift in India’s political landscape. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 240 seats, falling short of its anticipated majority, while the Colok sabha ngress increased its count to 99 seats, nearly doubling its previous tally from 2019.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has secured a third term; however, the BJP’s inability to achieve a majority on its own necessitates reliance on coalition partners. The party fell 32 seats short of the 272 majority mark, making the support of JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar and TDP’s Chandrababu Naidu crucial for forming the government. This outcome represents a setback for Modi, who had aimed for a landslide victory with the slogan ‘400 paar’.

The Lok Sabha elections 2024 results reflect a decline in BJP’s support since its sweeping victory in 2014 and its record 303 seats in 2019. The opposition INDIA bloc, buoyed by the Congress’s gains, claimed a moral and political victory, highlighting a rejection of the BJP’s policies.

In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP faced a significant challenge from the INDIA bloc, led by the Samajwadi Party, which won 37 seats, reducing the BJP’s count from 62 in 2019 to 35. Other key results included:

All India Trinamool Congress (AITC): 29 seats

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK): 22 seats

Telugu Desam Party (TDP): 16 seats

Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar): 7 seats

Janata Dal (United) – JD(U): 12 seats

Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray): 9 seats

Shiv Sena (SHS): 7 seats

Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas): 5 seats

Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP): 4 seats

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD): 4 seats

Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)): 4 seats

Several parties, including the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), each won 3 seats, while others secured 1-2 seats each.

The BJP experienced setbacks in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, struggled in the southern states, and saw limited success in West Bengal. However, it achieved a significant victory in Odisha, winning 20 out of 21 seats, with Congress securing the remaining seat, and the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) failing to win any.

In Bihar, the Congress RID alliance did not gain traction with voters, allowing the NDA alliance to maintain its position.

The election results have reshaped the political dynamics in India, setting the stage for new alliances and strategies. Both the NDA and the INDIA bloc have scheduled meetings to discuss their plans moving forward, reflecting the evolving political landscape.

The BJP’s performance indicates a need for introspection and potential recalibration of its strategies to regain voter confidence. As coalition talks continue, the coming days will be crucial in determining the future direction of India’s governance.

Irani’s defeat marks a notable moment in Amethi’s political history. Known for ending Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s long-standing dominance in the constituency with her victory in 2019, Irani’s tenure saw significant developmental projects aimed at improving infrastructure, healthcare, and education. Despite her efforts, the electorate favored Kishori Lal in this election, reflecting changing voter sentiments and dynamics.

Kishori Lal’s victory not only reshapes the political scenario in Amethi but also sets the stage for the future direction of the constituency.
Amidst the victories, the BJP sought a recount in Mumbai North West, indicating the closely contested nature of the elections. Meanwhile, in Raigad, Ajit Pawar-led NCP’s Sunil Tatkare emerged victorious, securing the sole seat the party led in throughout the counting process.

According to Election Commission figures, the NDA is currently leading in 17 seats, while the INDIA bloc is ahead in 24 seats, setting the stage for a nuanced political landscape. Notable contests include NCP(SP)’s Supriya Sule’s commanding lead over her sister-in-law Sunetra Pawar in Baramati, while BJP’s Pankaja Munde faces a trailing position in the family bastion of Beed.

This unexpected result marks a significant political shift in a constituency long regarded as a stronghold of the Indian National Congress, further reshaping the political landscape ahead of the next general elections.

Highlights of Smriti Irani’s 2019 Win

Historic Upset: Defeated Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, ending the Gandhi family’s decades-long dominance in Amethi.

Margin of Victory: Secured a win by over 55,000 votes.

Grassroots Campaign: Engaged extensively with the local population, addressing their issues directly.

Development Focus: Emphasized projects improving infrastructure, healthcare, and education.

Effective Strategy: Benefited from BJP’s strategic planning and strong organizational support.

Symbolic Victory: Her win symbolized BJP’s broader electoral success in 2019.

National Attention: Elevated her profile as a key BJP leader.

Amethi: A Battleground of Change

Amethi, traditionally a Congress stronghold, gained national attention when Smriti Irani won the seat in 2019, defeating Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Her victory marked a dramatic shift in the region’s political dynamics. Over the past five years, Irani has focused on developmental projects aimed at improving infrastructure, healthcare, and education in Amethi, earning her substantial support and popularity among the constituents.

Irani’s political journey has seen her rise through various ministerial roles:

Union Minister for Human Resource Development (May 2014–July 2016)

Union Minister for Textiles (July 2016–July 2021)

Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting (July 2017–May 2018)

Union Minister for Women and Child Development (May 2019–present)

Union Minister for Minority Affairs (July 2022–present)

MP from Amethi

Despite Smriti Irani’s substantial efforts to transform Amethi, the 2024 Lok Sabha elections ushered in a new era with Kishori Lal’s unexpected victory. This result highlights the dynamic nature of Indian politics and the importance of grassroots connections. As Amethi transitions to new leadership, Irani’s impactful tenure will remain a significant chapter in its political history, while the focus shifts to Kishori Lal’s approach to addressing the aspirations and challenges of his constituents.

Sharma emphasized the people’s trust in the constitutional system, stating that the counting of votes is merely a formality.

Asserting the party’s confidence, Jagdish Sharma remarked on Congress’ anticipated success, suggesting that they might secure up to 300 seats based on public trust. However, he expressed skepticism regarding Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), citing a decade of electoral losses despite continuous efforts.

As India gears up for the mammoth task of counting votes, which commences at 8 am today, stringent security measures have been implemented to ensure a smooth process. Over 8,000 candidates await the outcome of this general election, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seeks a historic third term in government.

Exit polls have largely predicted a return of PM Modi to power, potentially marking him as the first Prime Minister since Jawaharlal Nehru to secure three consecutive terms.

In a separate development, the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc leaders met with the Election Commission of India, urging the prioritization of postal ballot counting before EVM results.

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar assured the public of a robust electoral process, detailing the extensive arrangements in place across the nation’s 10.5 lakh booths.

Delhi, the national capital, braces for the election outcome with tight security measures. Having witnessed the culmination of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections conducted over seven phases, spanning from April 19 to June 1, the nation awaits the verdict that will shape its political landscape for the coming years.

</excerpt>

A day before vote counting, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar announced that India achieved the highest voter turnout globally in the Lok Sabha elections, calling the event a “miracle.”

During a Monday press conference, CEC Rajiv Kumar applauded all voters for participating in the elections.

“We have created a world record of 642 million voters. This historic moment for all of us is 1.5 times the voters of all G7 countries and 2.5 times the voters of 27 European Union (EU) countries. We thank everyone who took part in this festival of democracy. The Indian elections are indeed a miracle, with no parallel in the world,” Rajiv Kumar stated.

He highlighted that 312 million women voted in the 2024 General Elections, 1.25 times the number of women voters in the last national election across 27 EU countries, reflecting the ECI’s commitment to inclusive elections.

“The contribution of voters aged 85 and above is inspiring for our younger generation; they are the heroes of our democracy. They have witnessed India before independence and have shaped this country with their contributions over the past 70 years,” CEC Kumar added.

He noted that meticulous work by election personnel led to fewer repolls: “We ensured fewer repolls, with only 39 in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls compared to 540 in 2019. Of these, 25 out of 39 repolls were in just two states.”

The Election Commission expressed gratitude to the people of Jammu and Kashmir for their faith in the electoral process, noting that voter turnout in the state was the highest in four decades.

A global delegation of 75 observers from 23 countries praised India’s electoral process, highlighting its unparalleled scale, meticulous planning, and integrity.

“Identified, Confronted, and Tackled Muscle, Money, Misinformation, and MCC Violations – these impediments to free, fair, and transparent elections were addressed and responded to,” Kumar said.

He also mentioned the absence of violence in this election: “This is one of the General Elections where we have not seen violence. This required two years of preparation.”

The Election Commission made a record seizure of nearly Rs 10,000 crores during this election, almost three times the amount seized in 2019.

Kumar detailed the robust counting process for the Lok Sabha election results, comparing its precision to that of a clock.

The press conference, also attended by ECs Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, came amid exit poll predictions of a significant win for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), suggesting a potential “400 paar” target as stated by BJP leaders.

The Lok Sabha elections, held in seven phases starting April 19, saw Prime Minister Narendra Modi lead the BJP campaign. Votes will be counted on June 4.

</excerpt>

Odisha Congress leader Biswaranjan Mohanty has dismissed exit poll predictions for the Lok Sabha elections as “fake and manipulated,” claiming they do not reflect actual EVM results. He accused the BJP of using “managed” exit poll results to demoralize Congress leaders, asserting that the true results, to be announced tomorrow, will reveal genuine public sentiment.

“These are fake and manipulated exit polls. It is not a result of the EVM, but the DM. There is anger among the public over poverty and inflation. Be it farmers, youth, everyone has hatred against the BJP and people have voted against them,” Mohanty said while speaking to ANI.

He added, “BJP is trying to show the ‘managed’ exit poll results to demotivate the leaders of the Congress party. The public is not trusting the exit polls and the real results will be out tomorrow.”

Drawing a parallel to 2004, he reminded that Congress emerged victorious despite similar misleading exit polls, predicting a similar outcome in the forthcoming results. “During Late Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government, in 2004, the same type of ‘manufactured’ exit poll came and what happened then, was the Congress came to power,” he said.

Exit polls on Sunday predicted a landslide victory for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the Lok Sabha polls. They also forecast a close contest in Odisha, with the two-decade rule of Naveen Patnaik-led Biju Janata Dal (BJD) facing a stiff challenge from the BJP.

According to Axis My India exit poll, BJD and BJP are expected to win 62-80 seats in the 147-member legislative assembly in Odisha, while Congress is predicted to win 5 to 8 seats. The BJP is projected to win 18-20 seats in Odisha in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, with the BJD possibly winning 0-2 seats, and Congress likely getting 0-1 seat.

</excerpt>

As the seventh and final phase of the Lok Sabha elections unfolds, the Election Commission has mandated that no exit polls be conducted before 6:30 PM on June 1. This directive comes as 57 parliamentary constituencies across eight states and union territories prepare to cast their votes. The counting for the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections will take place on June 4. Here’s a detailed look into what exit polls are, their history, relevance, and the rules governing them.

What Are Exit Polls?

Exit polls are surveys conducted immediately after voters leave polling stations on election day. Unlike opinion polls, which gauge public sentiment before voting, exit polls aim to provide a snapshot of voters’ concerns and predict which party is likely to win. Various news channels and agencies in India conduct these polls, each employing different methodologies.

History of Exit Polls in India

The concept of exit polls in India dates back to 1957, when the Indian Institute of Public Opinion conducted the first such survey during the second Lok Sabha elections. The practice was further developed in the 1960s by the Delhi-based Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS). However, it wasn’t until the 1980s that exit polls began gaining serious traction in the media, largely due to the efforts of psephologists like Prannoy Roy, David Butler, and Ashok Lahiri. Their work, including the publication “The Compendium of Indian Elections,” set the stage for the mainstream acceptance of exit polls.

In 1996, state-run Doordarshan commissioned CSDS to conduct a countrywide exit poll, further solidifying the practice’s legitimacy.

How Exit Polls Are Conducted

The accuracy of exit polls depends on several factors, such as:

Structured questionnaires

Random sampling through in-person or telephonic interviews

Adequate sample size and demographic representation

Robust data compilation and counting methods

According to Sanjay Kumar, Director of CSDS, coherent data collection and systematic analysis are crucial for reliable vote share estimates.

Rules Governing Exit Polls

Exit polls in India are regulated by The Representation of People Act, 1951. Section 126A of the Act restricts the publication and dissemination of exit poll results during specified periods, particularly to prevent influencing voters. The Election Commission first issued guidelines on exit polls in 1998, barring newspapers and television channels from publishing or broadcasting exit poll results during specified times around the general elections.

Violating these provisions can lead to imprisonment for up to two years, a fine, or both. The EC also stipulates that news broadcasters must clearly state that any preliminary results are unofficial and not final until officially announced by the Election Commission.

Relevance and Criticisms of Exit Polls

Exit polls are popular because they provide a quick indication of election outcomes. However, their accuracy has often been questioned. Critics argue that exit polls can be biased, rely on skewed data or inadequate sample sizes, and sometimes serve political agendas.

Historically, exit polls have had mixed success. For instance, in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, pollsters failed to predict the Congress party’s victory over the NDA. Similarly, in 2009, they underestimated the extent of the UPA’s win. While exit polls correctly anticipated a BJP-led victory in 2014, they largely missed the magnitude of the party’s success. In 2019, most exit polls predicted a return of the BJP-led NDA government but underestimated the coalition’s decisive victory.

The Current Scenario

With the Election Commission’s ban on exit polls until the evening of June 1, the focus remains on ensuring that these polls do not influence voter behavior. As the final votes are cast, the nation waits with bated breath for the official results to be announced on June 4, while exit polls and their predictions continue to generate significant public and media interest.

By understanding the intricacies of exit polls, their historical context, and the rules governing them, voters can better appreciate their role and limitations in the electoral process.
