Vidhu Vinod Chopra Recalls Battling Suicidal Thoughts In The 1980s

Renowned director Vidhu Vinod Chopra recently revealed a very intimate anecdote from his past, during a difficult time in the 1980s, he contemplated suicide. The incident took place following the lacklustre response of Sazaye Maut (1981), his debut feature picture. Disillusioned and dejected, Chopra stood on the Lonavala highway, considering suicide, before the thought of his family pulled him back from the brink.

Speaking during the promotions of his latest project, Zero Se Restart, which narrates the making of his 2023 hit 12th Fail, Chopra spoke about that trying time. He said he was left feeling hopeless with the failure of Sazaye Maut and the pressure of writing his next film, Khamosh. “I was just one step away from ending it all,” he said. “But the love of my family saved me. That’s why it is important to acknowledge these struggles because life is about fighting battles—winning some and losing others. The joy lies in the fight itself, not the result,” he added.

Despite the initial failure, Chopra’s career made a remarkable turn. He received critical acclaim with Parinda in 1989 and commercial success with 1942: A Love Story. Blockbusters like Munnabhai MBBS, 3 Idiots, PK, and Sanju are now attached to his name. He was also away from the sets after a gap of 13 years as he directed Shikara in 2020 and 12th Fail.

Yami Gautam’s ‘Article 370’, exploring the PMO’s decision to amend Article 370, collected an impressive Rs 6.12 crore on day 1. Reduced ticket rates heightened anticipation, setting the stage for this strong debut. The film, shot on a budget of Rs 20 crore, is expected to collect at least Rs 7 crore on the second day.

Directed by Aditya Suhas Jambhale, it also features Raj Arjun and Priya Mani.

This interestingly, isn’t the first ‘small film’ to set the box office on fire in recent times. Here is a look at some other films which achieved this feat.

Hanu Man (2024)

Hanu Man is a Telugu language film about a youngster who gets the powers of Lord Hanuman and fights for an imaginary place called Anjanadri. The film is directed by Prasanth Varma and stars Teja Sajja, Amritha Aiyer and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar. It collected ₹199.81 crore on a budget of 40 crore despite the absence of A-list stars.

12th Fail (2023)

Shot on a budget of just ₹20 crore, the film made ₹57 crore in India. Directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra it stars Vikrant Massey as Manoj Kumar Sharma, a simpleton from a small village, and highlights his attempts at becoming an IPS officer. Medha Shankr and Joshi Anantvijay also star in the film.

The Kerala Story (2023)

Shot on a budget of ₹30 crore, the film made ₹220 crore in India and became the fifth highest grossing Hindi film of the year. ‘The Kerala Story’ managed to amass a remarkable nett collection of ₹242.2 crore, This film stars Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani and Sonia Balani. It explores the themes of religious conversion and terrorism.

The Kashmir Files (2022)

The film, shot on a budget of ₹ 25 crore, earned ₹252 crore crore in India to emerge as a blockbuster. It set a precedent by recouping most of its budget within the first weekend of its global release. The film is directed by Vivek Agnihotri and stars Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Darshan Kumar, and Pallavi Joshi. It highlights the tragic genocide of Kashmiri Pandits in the 1990s, a dark chapter in Indian history.

Kantara (2022)

Kantara is a Kannada language film which collected a huge amount of ₹309.64 crore on a meagre budget of ₹16 crore. Directed by Rishab Shetty, the film stars him along with Kishore and Achyuth Kumar. It revolves around a Kambala champion who is at loggerheads with an upright forest officer.

Karthikeya 2 (2022)

Karthikeya 2 is a sequel to 2014 Telugu language film Karthikeya. It is directed by Chandoo Mondeti and stars Nikhil Siddhartha and Anupama Parameswaran. In the film the protagonist is on a quest to find the lost anklet of Lord Krishna. Shot on a budget of approximately ₹15 crore, it made a collection of ₹86.75 crore at the box office.

New parents Vikrant Massey and Sheetal Thakur have announced the name of their baby boy. The couple named their son Vardaan and introduced him to the world with an adorable family picture shared on Instagram.

UPSC more difficult than IIT JEE, X users tell Anand Mahindra

Anand Mahindra, who previously commended the movie 12th Fail and its lead actor Vikrant Massey for his performance, revealed on Sunday that he was motivated to look for additional information about how candidates study for the test and how challenging it is to pass it. An IIT alumnus who had also taken the UPSC exams reportedly informed him that the latter was more challenging while doing this.

The movie 12th Fail, which started the conversation, is based on the life of Manoj Kumar Sharma, an IPS officer who overcame severe poverty to pursue a career as a police officer.

“After seeing 12th Fail I checked around and spoke to several young people about the relative difficulty of our entrance exams. One of them was a graduate of IIT who is involved in a business startup but who has also taken the UPSC exam,” Anand Mahindra wrote on X. “He stated EMPHATICALLY that UPSC is much tougher than the IIT JEE.”

The chairperson of Mahindra Group also shared a post listing the top ten most difficult tests globally, with three from India including IIT JEE at number 2, UPSC at number 3, and GATE at number 8. Mahindra said that if the feedback he received was true then the global rankings should be updated to reflect it.

However, X users’ reactions to the post revealed different perspectives on the examinations.

“One of my relatives cleared IIT in the first attempt and cracked UPSC in 4th attempt. He always says that UPSC is the ‘mother of all exams’,” commented Neetu Khandelwal (@T_Investor_). Another user and government official Rahman Sheikh (@rahmanology) wrote, “The exam itself is not tough but it has 3 stages and every graduate can take it which makes the competition very tough. One small mistake and you are out of the race. But if the difficulty level of question papers is compared, of course, JEE is much tougher.”

Makers of the upcoming movie ‘12th Fail’, inspired by true stories starring Vikrant Massey on Tuesday unveiled the trailer.

Taking to Instagram, Zee Studios shared the trailer video and captioned it, “In the journey of life, it’s not about where you start, but how you restart.Zero se kar #Restart! Watch #12thFail in cinemas on 27th October – inspired by a million true stories.”

The trailer features Vikrant Massey in the lead and has glimpses of the protagonist’s journey from a small village in Chambal to the bustling nerve centre of UPSC preparation in Delhi’s Mukherjee Nagar.
