South Africa’s Test side witnessed history as 27-year-old Wiaan Mulder broke the national batting record and came close to the world mark before choosing to declare the innings on the second day of the second Test against Zimbabwe at Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo on Monday.
Wiaan Mulder Declares at 367, Surpassing Amla’s Record
Wiaan Mulder was 367 not out when he declared at the lunch break against South Africa on 626 for five. Mulder, who is 27 years old, surpassed the previous highest South African personal score of 311 not out recorded by Hashim Amla against England at The Oval in London in 2012.
He proceeded to achieve the fifth-highest Test score in history and fell 33 runs short of Brian Lara’s record 400 not out for the West Indies against England in St John’s, Antigua, during the 2003/04 series.

Quickfire Triple Century and Leadership Debut for Wiaan Mulder
Returning on 264 not out, Mulder was the second South African triple centurion, scoring the milestone off 297 deliveries – the second quickest behind India’s Virender Sehwag, who reached 278 deliveries against South Africa in Chennai in 2007/08.
Back-to-Back Boundaries Seal National Milestone
Mulder, leading South Africa for the first time, tied Amla’s record before surpassing it with back-to-back boundaries from fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani.
Mulder was confronted with 334 deliveries and scored 49 fours and four sixes off a growing despondent and largely toothless Zimbabwe bowling line-up.
