Temba Bavuma Slams Australia’s ‘Choke’ Jibe After WTC Win: ‘We could hear them while batting…’

South Africa has struggled for years to win big cricket titles. Although they often reached the final stages, they never secured the trophy. However, that changed when Temba Bavuma and Aiden Markram led the team to chase down 282 runs at Lord’s. As a result, the victory turned them into national heroes.

Australia Tested South Africa’s Nerves

Australia brought a strong squad and a sharp mindset. Still, South Africa had to battle their own fears. Moreover, the Australian players tried to trigger those doubts during the game.

“While we were batting we could hear the Aussies using that dreaded word: choke,” said Bavuma.
He added, “We came in with a lot of belief and a lot of doubters. We got ourselves into the final, there were doubters as to the route we took. This win squashes that. Here’s an opportunity for us as a nation, divided as we are, to unite.”

The Win Brings Closure to Past Losses

Earlier in 2024, South Africa lost the T20 World Cup final to India from a strong position. Additionally, they suffered a painful defeat against Australia in the 1999 World Cup semifinal, also played in England. This time, they got the revenge they had waited decades for.

Bavuma said the victory gave the country a reason to smile.
“As a country, it’s a chance for us to rejoice in something, to forget about our issues and really come together. I hope it inspires and continues to inspire our country. For this group of players, there were a lot of doubters but the way we played would have wiped all of that out.”

Markram Seals the Win and the Past

Aiden Markram stood out with the only century of the match. Because of his performance, he won the Player of the Match award. Furthermore, he said this win would help the team move on from the painful label they carried for years.

“It’ll be great to not have to hear that again. To have got the job done and to get rid of that is quite a big thing for this team. All the questions that have been asked in the past have now been answered,” said Markram.
