TATA WPL 2025: Mumbai Indians Cruise to Victory Over UPW, Boost Playoff Hopes

Mumbai Indians (MI) secured a dominant six-wicket win over UP Warriorz in their Women’s Premier League 2025 match in Lucknow on Thursday. Hayley Matthews led the charge with a solid half-century, while Amelia Kerr’s outstanding five-wicket haul turned the game in MI’s favor.

As a result, MI climbed to second place on the points table. With four wins and two losses, they now have eight points, strengthening their playoff chances.

UP Warriorz Build a Competitive Total

After winning the toss, MI decided to field first. UP Warriorz got off to a strong start as openers Grace Harris and Georgia Voll stitched together a 74-run stand in just eight overs. However, Matthews provided the breakthrough by dismissing Grace for 28 off 25 balls, which included three fours and a six.

Soon after, Voll reached her half-century in only 29 balls, hitting 11 boundaries. Nevertheless, Kerr quickly shifted the momentum by removing Kiran Navgire for a duck. Meanwhile, Nat Sciver-Brunt dismissed Voll for a well-made 55 off 33 balls, including 12 fours. Consequently, UPW found themselves at 90/3 in 10.2 overs.

From there, skipper Deepti Sharma (27 off 25 balls) and Dinesh Vrinda (10) tried to stabilize the innings. They pushed the team past the 100-run mark in 12 overs. However, Kerr struck again, taking crucial middle-order wickets and reducing UPW to 125/7 by the 17th over.

In the final overs, Sophie Ecclestone played a quick cameo, scoring 16 runs and helping UPW reach 150/9 in 20 overs. Kerr emerged as the standout bowler with impressive figures of 5/38. Additionally, Matthews picked up two wickets, while Sciver-Brunt and Parunika Sisodia claimed one each.

MI Chase Down the Target with Ease

Chasing 151, MI suffered an early blow when Chinelle Henry dismissed Amelia Kerr for 10 in the third over, leaving them at 24/1. However, Matthews and Sciver-Brunt quickly took control of the game.

Together, they built a crucial 92-run partnership, putting MI in a commanding position. Sciver-Brunt played a brisk knock of 37 off 23 balls, smashing seven fours. As a result, MI crossed the 100-run mark in just 11 overs.

Nevertheless, Grace Harris brought UPW back into the contest by dismissing Sciver-Brunt. Shortly after, Matthews also fell after a brilliant 68 off 46 balls, which included eight fours and two sixes. Furthermore, Grace struck again to remove MI skipper Harmanpreet Kaur for just four runs, leaving MI at 137/4 in 16.3 overs.

Despite these setbacks, Amanjot Kaur (12*) and Yastika Bhatia (10*) kept their composure. Ultimately, they guided MI to victory with six wickets and nine balls to spare.
