On Thursday, IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad announced Aiden Markram as their new skipper for the 2023 Indian Premier League. The SUN Group-owned franchise announced the new update to their Caption on Instagram, saying, “The wait is over.” #OrangeArmy, say hello to our new captain Aiden Markram.” Earlier, former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson was leading Sunrisers Hyderabad, but, the franchise released him after the last season.
In the inaugural edition of the SA20 league, Markram led Sunrisers East Cape, which grabbed the first title earlier this month. In the league, Markram was the third-highest run scorer with 366 runs in 12 matches at an average of 33.27 with 1 ton and 1 half-century.
Before the SA20 final, Markram showed his interest in leading SRH when he said, “What’s going to happen, to be honest. Either way, we back the management’s decision about who they want to be in charge.”
Markram said, “Becoming the captain is not the be-all and end-all. You can be in some form of leadership role too. But I am okay with captaincy, it’s something that I enjoy doing.” “I have been captaining for a while before this tournament started. It’s been a nice experience, a fresh start, I would say.” He added.
It is likely to come out that Mayank Agarwal, who was bought for Rs 8.5 crore by SRH, was also in the discussions for leadership, but the decision went to Markram’s side. Even Sanjay Manjrekar believes that SRH should think about Agarwal as their new skipper. Talking to a sports channel, he said, “If it was left to me, I wouldn’t got to Mayank Agarwal.”
Meanwhile, IPL 2023 is on March 31, where the first match will be played between the set to begin Chennai Super Kings and the defending champion Gujarat Titans at Narendra Modi Stadium.
