Tottenham Hotspur have finalised the signing of striker Mathys Tel on a permanent contract until 2031, the Premier League club announced on Sunday. Mathys was brought to Hotspur from the Bundesliga team in February on loan for the remainder of the season with an option for making it permanent.
Impactful Loan Spell at Spurs
He came on as a substitute for the club against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup before registering his first start with a strike against Aston Villa in the FA Cup. He netted his first Premier League goal from the spot to inspire a 3-1 victory over Southampton in April. The attack-minded forward played 20 times across all competitions last season, netting 3 goals.
Mathys is now playing for France at the 2025 UEFA European Under-21 Championship alongside his Spurs teammate Wilson Odobert.
Bayern Munich Reflects on Tel’s Journey
“Mathys Tel came to FC Bayern as a very young player and mastered his first steps at the top level of European football here,” Bayern’s head of sport Max Eberl said in a statement.
“He was a popular figure in the squad, who always gave his all for the club and the team. The move to Tottenham has turned out to be the right one for his development.”
From Rennes to North London
The 20-year-old signed for Bayern Munich from Stade Rennes in 2022 on a four-year deal, and then extended his contract until 2029 in March of last year. He has netted 16 goals in 83 games for the German outfit but has struggled to nail a regular starting place.
He is now the first to sign under new manager Thomas Frank, who was signed on Friday after Ange Postecoglou was sacked.
