Jos Buttler Says He Was ‘Scared’ Watching Suryavanshi’s Brutal Knock

Rajasthan Royals took a bold step by purchasing Vaibhav Suryavanshi for ₹1.1 crore during the IPL 2025 mega auction. Many had questioned the decision, but it quickly proved to be a smart move. Suryavanshi had already impressed with his performance for India U-19, and people had started comparing him to Sachin Tendulkar.

Youngest IPL Debutant in History

In the early matches, RR kept Suryavanshi on the bench. But after Sanju Samson was injured, the team gave him a chance to open alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal. He made his debut on April 19, 2025, against Lucknow Super Giants. At just 14 years and 23 days old, he became the youngest player ever to debut in the IPL. In that match, he scored 34 runs off 20 balls, and hit a six on the very first ball he faced.

Breaking Records in Just His Second Game

In his next match against Gujarat Titans, Suryavanshi went a step further. He scored an explosive 101 runs off 38 balls, reaching his century in just 35 deliveries. He played without fear and took on top bowlers like Mohammed Siraj and Rashid Khan, becoming the youngest centurion in IPL history.

Jos Buttler Shares His Impressions

On a podcast with Stuart Broad, Jos Buttler spoke about Suryavanshi’s stunning performance. He mentioned feeling both inspired and slightly disheartened watching someone 20 years younger play with such dominance. According to Buttler, the cricket world was in shock after seeing what the youngster had achieved.

He recalled how Suryavanshi had hit a six on his very first IPL ball, adding that it looked like a planned shot rather than a lucky one. Buttler pointed out that the teenager gave himself space and struck it over wide long-off confidently.

Fearless Attitude Impresses the Experts

Buttler observed that Suryavanshi showed no hesitation in any of his games. He believed that many young cricketers now aim to make bold statements, and Vaibhav was a clear example of that. He said the sixes weren’t just clearing the boundary but were massive shots.

He also spoke about Suryavanshi’s century against Gujarat Titans, calling it “outrageous.” Buttler said the boy looked completely in control, even when facing experienced players.

Handling Pressure Like a Pro

Buttler recalled another game where Suryavanshi played against Chennai Super Kings, who had experienced bowlers like Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. He noted that Suryavanshi managed to hit them into the stands with ease, and then calmly took a single when needed. At that moment, Buttler thought the young player might be the best he had ever seen.

Style Reminiscent of Cricket Legends

Buttler mentioned that his team had studied Suryavanshi’s previous games. He compared the teen’s smooth bat swing to that of Yuvraj Singh and Brian Lara, though he admitted it was a bold comparison. He also mentioned that the youngster had already played first-class cricket at 12, and came from Bihar, a region not known for producing many top cricketers.

Early Signs of Greatness

Before the IPL auction, Suryavanshi had scored one of the fastest centuries for India U-19 against Australia U-19, which caught the attention of several franchises. Buttler said people had already seen videos of his talent.

He admitted jokingly that it felt strange to feel nervous about facing a 14-year-old, but Suryavanshi’s skills justified the hype.

Currently Touring with India U-19 in England

Suryavanshi is now on tour in England with the India U-19 team. Fans and cricket experts alike are closely watching to see how this rising star continues to grow.
